Yes, it is true, read the annoucement on top of the threads.
This means, no more hosting for the ROMs (released ones of ones created by us) this is a BIG loss as it's always a pain in the neck to great any ROM and will push ROM creation into the illegal zone
I will make my prophet ROMs available somewhere else, details will follow later.
ps.
yes i'm back, hopefully with a new ROM soon, I had to deal with a lot of personal crap, but i'm back again.

Yeah wellcome back This is good news...
As for "Microsoft's choice".... hope they burn in hell lol well in my perspective they're just trying to finish off those dedicate persons like Jesterz that are working hard to correct Microsoft's software defects...
Hopefully we can all learn from this as I think M$ just reacted to Carrier induced pressure due to lots and lots of customer complaints of bricked devices due to failure to understand ROM upgrade procedures... So please if you are reading this and don't have a clue of how upgrade procedures work, either, don't complain and deal with your bricked device (in a worst case scenario) or don't upgrade at all.
It's a shame
These guys from Redmond shoul learn to respect the work of theyr customers.
We make it possible that they get theyr monthly payment.
I hope we find a way to share our roms and tools any other way.
Any ideas yet?
I'll pray for us.

Yeah.. it's pretty retarded... The only bloody reason I bought an HTC device is cause I knew I could flash the rom for newer AKUs and fixes and stuff... I should've just waited for the damn iPhone.. lol....

What the panic is all about?
I don't get it why you all surrender to this Redmond threats.
Usenets have been around for decades. I am a regular user of Usenets from '95 and I can tell you that their strong arm didn't and probably won't reach there.
Why not simply post your valuable stuff there and leave our cherrished forum clean of any files whatsoever?
Just post to alt.binaries.warez.pocketpc and by the way the kind of stuff we find there is really lacking the quality we got here so the newsgroup might just improve that way.
What do you think?
It's so sad to see how MS is dealing with this situation. I have owned PPC's for some time know, and not until I started having problems first with my universal and recently with my prophet that I got into this community. This web site is the best thing that has happened to MS and HTC. I have singed Jester's petition to MS. I know that if this happens I shall go to PALM o iPhone. THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is sad indeed...
At least the good news is that you're back... so welcome back Jesterz
History teaches us nothing.
It is not by taking the ROM archive dowm that MS can stop ROMs from going around!
Why don't they simply try to release ROMs that WOULD NOT require any interventions from the final user instead.
Looks like the "prohibitionism" has taught these guys nothing at all.
i suggest we can use http://www.mydatabus.com host to share our roms. (up to 5 G space pro person and stable).
Rapidshare, megaupload, uploading...etc are not good solutions for us to download and exchange file. Because it will be deleted in limited times.

I came into this forum a couple of weeks back with a bricked prophet G4 & a O2 XDA Exec(UK). Since then not only i have been able to restore my prophet ,I have been able to learn a lot abt PPC as a whole. Its a shame that M$ feels thereatened by this forum as we have done nothing wrong except to give people choice!!! Isn't it our right to choose & develop??? Who's MS to stop us?? Where were they whan I was running from pillar to post to get my bricked prophet running....

If you are talking about hermes ROMs, then, you may be right, but, if you are talking about universal, then, there are not more than 10-15 ROMs(for wm6)
Lets me re-frase my question: which room would you say is with least errors?
here is your answer, set aside a few hours, install the latest ones and decide which one you like the most.
there is no 'best' rom, only those that suit your tastes/needs more.

Go and do your own homework..you work it out yourself..read whats written in these forums then come back and you will no longer be a NOOB. best rom is PDAVIET 2.10.11 ROM, with Radio 1.18 ... and it is the only ROM I've tried ;-)
Best WM5 ROM is the official WM5 ROM.
Best WM6 ROM depends on your preference. No ROM has the "least Errors/Bugs". They have the same amount of Errors/bugs. If you don't believe me, try them all.
Once you're done, you are no longer a n00b. And you are no longer new in this "Business". You are now out of what you thought was xda-noobies. Welcome to xda-developers.

this is the best rom in my experience! I had installed all WM6 Rom. like hermes, PDA VIET... event with some rom of Ivan! But this rom is very stable, ram recovering well after using some software, especially when log in internet through wifi! May be with my device is the best but I think you should try it first to save your time!

For sure...Read and try the differents roms avalaible and you could make your own choice : you'll find the better rom ...
It's not because your noob that you don't have to read : quite to the contrary ... you should read more than everyone...Being a noob is not a good excuse !!
I've tried certainly all wm6 released on universal. Each rom have advantage and inconvenient...
The best way is to test it yourself !
In my case i've stopped on leo's Rom because i like his kitchen base !

Wow, I can see you have that British sense of humor, well known in WHOLE WORLD.....
Do you find it hard to comprehend, these ROMs are home brew, the people using them are techie people that like messing with these things, and different tastes suit different people.
Why do you think so much variety exists in everything in life? It's because different people come to different conclusions.
It's why there are so many damn versions of linux.

There are a lot of us Brits on this forum, not a wise move from someone asking for help.
We were all "noobs" once, the best way to deal with your issues is read the damn threads, and when you still don't find any answers ask "POLITELY" for assistance.
We are all here to help each other, and we will help, but please abide by the rules (You may have failed to read those too!!) and try to be polite.
None of us here make any financial gain from what we do, and the help and knowledge that we pass on is free of charge.
So have a little respect and expect to be criticised if you can't bother to learn by a little reading.

Hi guys,
I'm finally getting around to flashing my stock Vario III after loads of hemming and hawing, but before I do; I have a question or two for you.
1) If I go to WM6.1, can I use my Sprite Backup files to restore my installed apps? I've heard I can't, but would like to confirm.
2) As there are so many ROMs to choose from, are there any for WM6.1 that are as close as possibly to the official T-Mobile ROM my phone shipped with? My primary requirement in a new ROM is stability and usability, but I'd like it to be as fast as possible too.
3) Which pagepool size renders the best performance?
My thanks to those that may answer, and a big wet raspberry to anyone that tell me to search the forum! (I did!)

1. No. Only if you use the same rom. Use UC to install your apps. Its real easy.
2. Cant tell you that. It's a personal preference thing. Only you can answer that.
3. I like 18.
Thanks. I know 2 is mainly a personal preference thing, but I'd rather find one that's as similar to the shipped rom as I can, without all the extra trimmings that people add. Hence I was asking if there were any like that, beyond that NoFrills one.
Oh, BTW.. What's UC? Could you expand the abbreviation please?

UC us User Customization. It was developed on this site to allow people to 1-tap install all of their applications after flashing a new ROM. It works the same way as carrier customization after a hard reset.
The NoThrills ROM floating around here is quite good for someone looking for a very basic ROM so there are no unused/wasted applications on your phone. Until the Apr 09 Dutty ROM came around, I was running NoThrills since the day it came out, and was very satisfied with it.

But to be honest FloatingFatMan it really is dependent on your taste for me i can't get away from Dutty's roms as they are very nicely put together (although am patiently waiting for final release of xda live 2.0). I have my hesitations for flashing too... it looks too complicated, at least the first time. So far, I have not tried... using Vista makes it look very difficult too.
Any specific tips here? BTW, as far as searching the forum is concerned, I have read them all... almost

I really do think the Wiki's and FAQ's have a lot to offer. That is how I learned to flash and customize. It seems like the hardest part(insert joke) is the first time set up stuff like Hard SPL, Jump SPL, etc. But after that you start to tweak your device more, it gets easier. Sprinkle in a little UC(User Customizations) and then your hooked. You'll start looking for and trying any and every ROM out there. I know people get annoyed when all of us say to read but it's the only way to learn and understand the stuff. It's all laid out for you, you just have to use it and soak it all in. And if you have really read and made an honest effort to learn on your own(and we can tell) lots of people here are more than willing to help, we've all been there. It's just when we read all the redundant questions that have already been answered that some get their blow torches out.

no doubt, after all the tytn II is an expensive toy and u would have a hard time justifying it to urself if u bricked it on ur first atempt. but honestly its fairly ez first u need to get hardspl and after that flash any rom for kaiser u like. i have xp so not sure about issues w/vista but if u pm me i can tell u how i did it and hopefully that will help.
also read the first sticky, everything in it, in the Kaiser rom development form it should clear up alot of hesitations.

Oh I've flashed my old Magician a few times... I'm not the slightest bit worried about bricking my devices either. I've read everything and am pretty confident.
No, my reason for hesitation is that I'm basically a lazy bugger and the thought of reinstalling all my apps is irritating. Besides.. With so many ROMs, it's hard to choose the one I want!
@futbolkeeper, thesire and tubaking182,
Thank you very much for the advice and support, appreciated. My idea of first-time flashing is:
Step 1. HardSPL (after data backup)
Step 2. Flash new ROM
Step 3. Flash new Radio.
Step 4. Restore data
Step 5. Install any new apps, if necessary...
Am I right here? I may do this in a short while!
ahahah.
I would be a trifle peery of your 4th bullet. You do not mean to restore data from a preexisting backup, do you? Even if you partially succeed, you can make one big mess of your "new" Kaiser. Nothing an HR could not put straight, but that defeats the purpose of restoring data in the first place, now doesn't it. (and yes, I went through that myself. Lost an hour or so for exactly zero gain)
If, however, you only mean things that PIM Backup can store, go ahead by all means! Contacts, agenda, tasks, texts - NP here.
And yes, you will end up (re)installing extra apps - if only because no-one but you can judge what is key for you. And because if you use your Kaiser as a gaming platform or a mobile library, no-one has quite the same taste as you.
Ah, and yes, your suggested order is quite correct
Thank you wyrm. That's absolutely clear, and by 'restore data' I meant PIM backup, so no problems here.
As I am typing this, I have already done the first three steps above, everything is perfect and am restoring with PIMbackup now... It has been a great experience, and am very excited...
EDIT: PIM data restored and all's well. Hope all my previous programs work well with this ROM too.
BTW, This ROM (Dutty's WM6.1_5.2.19700_Hybrid_V2) has a radio also inbuilt, so step 3 was redundant
Entire process took about 20 minutes flat...
I've flash so many times already, reading all about ROMs out there really convincing. So I flash and flashed on my Hermes, HP and Kaiser then only realize bugs one after another. No big deal. And it's not going to stop too.

I've tried all of the roms recently released and like everyone will tell you they are different and suit different needs.
I personally am currently using Gullum's ThrottleDiamond I - its got a great UI with the newest throttle diamond theme as well as some built in apps.
Dutty's Diamond L26 are also stable - what I had trouble with early on was finding and flashing the right radios for each rom.
Good luck in your quest!
If you're looking for a super clea ROM, look into XDA Live 2.0, it worked great for me. If you're looking for a packed ROM with everything, look at the Dutty series. If you want one in between, look at this one.

Tonka, no offense intended, but why do we need four new threads from you, all pretty much relating to the same issue?
furthermore, if you had read the guide posted with the ROM, you would've known to back up your radio files BEFORE flashing...
after flashing and restoring them, if it's still not working, there are posts in the ROM's thread that include links to the radio files to various popular carriers, almost all of which work.
I got my radio files from someone on the forum here, you can too.
btw, RTFM. honestly.

just check out the first couple of pages of dexter's post, it's all in there
not to interfere with the debate,
but an honest answer is also, if you cannot understand the steps explained, i would not recommend trying to install any mods for openrecovery and messing with the files in the system..
you can easily corrupt the image, and you will spend even more time on trying to figure out why A is not working , while B,C,D problem suddenly occur causing A not to function..
I know HTC made it easy for all modders to make custom firmwares using almost identical radio's and only in some cases, it goes really bad for some regions, but in our case Motrola decided to make the baseband a huge part of the drivers and way to resolve communication and even make it provider locked or complex in a way i cannot even explain. (preferred providers over others as example, custom mobile services as another)
many HTC mods, includes support for like 12-15 countries in one image, looking at "locale" supported, where motorola pushes 12 different firmwares out..i personally only mess with a UK as it worked fine for me, trying to make the other 11 work, would require much more support and engagement in the technical aspects of the mod..we are lucky a few document and write feedback on how they accomplished to make it work (telus as example)
I couldn't agree more.
