Okay, here is my dilema..... My current contract is up, so i have the option of 3 ways to go next...
I've had various Windows Mobile based devices for several years now, i've had the SPV E200, then the SPV M1000 (Himalaya), then the O2 XDA Exec (Universal), then the O2 Mini-s (Wizard) then finally the MDA Vario II (Hermes)
I've had loads of fun with these handsets over the years and thanks to xda-devs have hacked and flashed to my hearts content..... but now i think it's time for a chance...
Do i....
A) Get the next update in the Windows Mobile range, the MDA Vario III (Kaiser)
B) Get an Unlocked Iphone...
C) Get a Iphone clone
D) Something else - if so, please specify... i appreciate your time and opinion.
What do you thiink
imho iphone clones are like a dragqueen few people are really fooled
and it's not the same thing
same thing with many other ui mods for wm they got their look but when the user
start a program or open a dir your back to the wm look
so imho iphone skins are just that skins the thing one see before starting to use the device
if the cool of iphone is what one likes and one can make do with the limitations of features of iphone then get an iphone
if one needs the features of various wm devices then imho putting a skin on it which makes people think it's iphone'ish will make it just that
i require the access of many 3th party apps which i cant get on iphone so i will make do with wm even if some parts of iphones gui is better and cooler then wm
i will not try to make my wm device with whatever lacking it have look like an undead ½ iphone
Apples and oranges
By the looks you know what WM can do for you. Are you happy with it? Does it suit your needs?
Or do you prefer eye-candy with a very slick UI?
Work or fun?
You have a lot of WM software that you paid for?
The choice is yours, really........
P.S.: I do like the I-phone UI, the screen etc., but for me the present version just doesn´t cut it........maybe the next generation I-Phone.
Do you want "use" or "decoration" ?
Iphone is like flash-dating: the initial 3 minutes thing. But it sure is a dating agent; it will probably pull a lot of partners if they are the kind easily impressed by money and looks; I've seen a 40-some guy on a plane do just that! And the girl did not look more than 17. Now a WM phone would probably scare her away. Too techy.
But I like tech things and am waiting for a really good linux phone.
Cheers.
one think i love about iphone is the album art flipping one can do like in itunes but personaly i use a sdcard reader to put music on my device so it would not sync
plus iphone cant use sdcards at all so that would be a limitation too
It depends on what you do with the device.
Do you want MS Exchange push mail, with corporate lookup and full sync of contacts and calendar?
Do you want 3G speed where Wifi is not avail?
Do you want to teather to a laptop?
Do you want video capture and camera controls (zoom, light adjust, etc)?
Do you want Stereo Bluetooth headset support for streaming music and be able to take calls?
If you answered yes to most of these, you should stick with a WM device.
Otherwise, the benefits you will get from the iPhone will be well worth the it. I often will use my iPhone on Wifi to browse the internet instead of my laptop or desktop - it's that good. Really you will need to get your hands on an iPhone and decide. Some people have a hard time going from all those buttons to the "soft" keyboard of the iPhone. I was using a Touch before going to the iPhone as my main phone so the keyboard was an improvement for me.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far, your comments have been very helpful in making up my mind on what to get next.... Iphone, just ordered one !
Now my reasons are this, i've had lots of wm devices as i described in my first post and i think i've ran the course with them in terms of what i can do with them and what they can do for me. PLUS i'm not travelling around alot now for work as i'm more office bound now, so don't need the tomtom anymore. I also think the interface on the iphone is exceptional and after using loads of different themes on the xda, nothing comes close to the polished look and feel. Also, i've got to the point where i don't use any of the added programs i used to on my xda, except from the finger scrolling add ons such as pocketcm, s2sunlock and htc-touchflo cube.....
I hope i have many years of fun with this iphone when it arrives and will keep popping in here from time to time to catch up.....
OK thats an ambiguous title I know, sorry, but I needed to start somewhere. I have not been around Mobile Devices for some time, I mess around with Blackberries in work but have not had an HTC device at home for a couple of years.
I had the original XDA and XDA2, the Jasjar (universal) and had the original Orange SPV, which I gave to my son only for him to leave on a wall in a service station 3 days later All were great fun learning apps, unlocking, themes, s/w etc. But I have not had a high spec phone for some time, and to be honest looking at the VAST number of devices it's all a bit overwelming.
So, I am looking for a device that has a qwerty keyboard, touchscreen, OS is not important so long as I can get misc apps working like TomTom, irc, spreadsheet, ftp, and some decent e-mail/calendar s/w. Also a decent music/video player (used to love a DivX app on the universal).
I am UK based, will buy on contract, don't mind waiting a couple of months if there are new devices on the horizon. I don't mind NEW technology, as in, with a few Bugs, so long as the basic stuff works.
GPS is a nice to have but not essential, I would be using it as a phone, so nothing too big, the universal was as big as I would go for something you carry around with you most of the time.
Any thoughts or ideas?
Cheers, Shire

If it has to be HTC I would suggest Touch Pro, it has the best keyboard after Universal, and has very nice specs! However, you can forget watching decent DivX or xvid movies without converting them, in fact there is almost no new HTC device that can play back a movie without heavy converting becouse of missing drivers! Sucks I know, but the best HTC device I had was in fact the universal! Also Touch pro as well as other new HTC devices are having problems with the so called GPS lag, search this forum to find out more about it!
However, you should check out the new Sony X1 if keyboard is important to you! I have not tested it, but it should be able to play back movies correctly, and maybe no gps lag?
If however a hardware keyboard is not that important to you, then the Samsung Omnia will be a winner! It is very slick, much like the Iphone, and it has all the drivers, so no problems with anything at all!
Enter here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446362
And let´s see what all members think about the best device!
Hope everybody can vote!
Thanks Bro...the best one will be the Rafael, I use to have the original Touch, but I was missing the keyboard and Wi-Fi, and all the other wonders that the Pro has, the Sprint version is decent, could be a little bether, but it's nice to work with!!!
I am going to buy new device. I am struggling between htc hero and diamond. I know that the first one is on android os and second is WM 6.1. Which one do you suggest to buy? I want to use it as entertainment gimmick, surf the internet, watch a movie from time to time whilst standing in traffic jam or so. And of course take advantage of all apps available for the mobile.
I live in Poland and these two along with Samsung I780 and Nokia 5800 are the best offer for wi-fi model in affordable price for me.
I haven't had any pda device yet, that's why i don't know how to choose the pick of the bunch.
Thanks in advance.
PS I tried search option, but non of the result was useful or i addressed a wrong question.
considered the things you want to do, the hero is the better choice. winmo is great for special applications and exchange support etc (but this is also implemented now with htcs firmware), multimedia-wise android is better positioned.
As i have said i need phone for the internet access, cool apps, watching video, maybe few games( do the old games from pc work on wim?), of course phoning, sending text messages. I am looking for something cool with applicative options.
I don't care about photo camera or pure business amenities. It should be funcional and fulfilling rather entertaining purposes.
What about differences in interface, is any of these significantly better?
Just ran across this, has anyone heard anything? I haven't seen it on any other site and really not familiar with this one.

It will be the highest priced app in the market, unless there is something higher than 30$..

Yeah, which is getting out of hand (at least, for me). I've had my Slingbox for several years and I've switched mobile platforms during that time. No discount and my licenses go to waste. I'm guessing I'm up to at least $100 in just Slingbox player (WinMo, iPhone, etc.).
It wouldn't bother me, since I do use the app, but I'm guessing they're about to milk me another time when they launch the iPad app. There's no sign they will opt for universal app. Second, their follow up support sucks. They're lucky they have such a useful product because their player development cycle (waaay too long), licensing scheme ("buy the hardware and never pay" except for our software) and support isn't winning a single award.
edit: OH, and another thing... their ridiculous ability to charge $30 for software that they aren't willing to state whether it will work with my Slingbox AV. I get to roll the dice and maybe one day it will go dark.
Been waiting for this app also. Besides the $30 cost there will be nothing better for live streaming from your tv. Had it for windows mobile and iphone. Watched directv all over town. This is the best $30 you can spend. Sucked when they shutdown the sling community forums and opened up the new "staff driven" support forums. Sling community was great and helped a lot of people.

I wonder if you would be able to transfer the iphone to ipad? I am sure this won't work to transfer to android though.

At least its just a one time charge, not sure what the other companies (not t-mobile) charge to have the TV type services.

I'm digging into their forum/answers site and it looks like my old, old Windows Mobile license can transfer so long as the Android player is a trial version that accepts licenses. The iPhone app is a different beast than their usual software since Apple has complete control over the distribution of the app. I guess I learned tonight that it's quite possible to transfer from WinMo to Blackberry to Symbian. Your license is only active on one install.
I'm crossing my fingers they took this into consideration.
why on earth are they charging so damn much of this thing? Really, its just a player, thats a third of what I payed for the slingbox itself. But if this same app works on google tv, I might have a purpose for this app.
"When in your mobile phone provider's area of 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi coverage and connected to a Slingbox® SOLO, PRO or PRO-HD, SlingPlayer Mobile makes it simple to watch and control your living room television at any time from any location."
no dice on my slingbox tuner then i guess

Working on my Slingbox AV but it says "some streams will not work". No clue why "some" wouldn't and others would.

more then likely the older models work perfectly well, but they can sell the solo and pro's for a lot more then a tuner or an AV. It probably all about money. Their site says "tuner and AV is not supported. It is highly recommended to get the newer slingboxs" This is what it said for the iphone moblie app.
hmmm....i guess its about time to finally purchase a slingbox.
not showing up in the market for me -running frf50
edit; now it is using THIS
I have 3 slingboxes at work, an original, pro (i think next model after the original) and a new HD one. Only the HD one works. The iphone version supports all three. The prices on these players is wacked. I don't mind paying but jeez. Buy a $30 app just to find out I need to buy like $600 worth of new boxes. Good looking out Google with the 24 hour refund period.

Google it?
I also think that having to buy the app at full price if you already are a slingbox owner is ridiculous!!! At least give current owners a discount or something!! And it's not like the app is cheap, $30 is type expensive just for the app...no??
Can someone please post the Slingbox.APK if it's ok/allowed or send it to me via PM? so we can see if our current licenses would work??? I'd greatly appreciate it as I'm many others would as well!!!
Best purchase since the N1
still cant see it here....

Just wanted to know, really miss it or are is Zune pass the paid equivalent?
I emailed Pandora once and their smart ass remark was thanks for the suggestion be sure to check out Pandora on all these devices, I don't know what they're deal is, its like their biased against wp7
Sent from my HD7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I'd imagine with the apis opening up a bit more they may be more inclined to give it a try.
zune pass is great but more likely slacker is the pandora replacement.
I use Last.FM. Frankly, I feel it's a better service, as unlike Pandora it lets you skip as many times as you want if ****ty songs keep coming up, there's no hourly limit
i agreee, last.fm owns pandora imo.
