Iphone or WM6 based PDA - General Topics

Okay, here is my dilema..... My current contract is up, so i have the option of 3 ways to go next...
I've had various Windows Mobile based devices for several years now, i've had the SPV E200, then the SPV M1000 (Himalaya), then the O2 XDA Exec (Universal), then the O2 Mini-s (Wizard) then finally the MDA Vario II (Hermes)
I've had loads of fun with these handsets over the years and thanks to xda-devs have hacked and flashed to my hearts content..... but now i think it's time for a chance...
Do i....
A) Get the next update in the Windows Mobile range, the MDA Vario III (Kaiser)
B) Get an Unlocked Iphone...
C) Get a Iphone clone
D) Something else - if so, please specify... i appreciate your time and opinion.
What do you thiink

imho iphone clones are like a dragqueen few people are really fooled
and it's not the same thing
same thing with many other ui mods for wm they got their look but when the user
start a program or open a dir your back to the wm look
so imho iphone skins are just that skins the thing one see before starting to use the device
if the cool of iphone is what one likes and one can make do with the limitations of features of iphone then get an iphone
if one needs the features of various wm devices then imho putting a skin on it which makes people think it's iphone'ish will make it just that
i require the access of many 3th party apps which i cant get on iphone so i will make do with wm even if some parts of iphones gui is better and cooler then wm
i will not try to make my wm device with whatever lacking it have look like an undead ½ iphone

Apples and oranges
By the looks you know what WM can do for you. Are you happy with it? Does it suit your needs?
Or do you prefer eye-candy with a very slick UI?
Work or fun?
You have a lot of WM software that you paid for?
The choice is yours, really........
P.S.: I do like the I-phone UI, the screen etc., but for me the present version just doesn´t cut it........maybe the next generation I-Phone.

Do you want "use" or "decoration" ?
Iphone is like flash-dating: the initial 3 minutes thing. But it sure is a dating agent; it will probably pull a lot of partners if they are the kind easily impressed by money and looks; I've seen a 40-some guy on a plane do just that! And the girl did not look more than 17. Now a WM phone would probably scare her away. Too techy.
But I like tech things and am waiting for a really good linux phone.
Cheers.

one think i love about iphone is the album art flipping one can do like in itunes but personaly i use a sdcard reader to put music on my device so it would not sync
plus iphone cant use sdcards at all so that would be a limitation too

It depends on what you do with the device.
Do you want MS Exchange push mail, with corporate lookup and full sync of contacts and calendar?
Do you want 3G speed where Wifi is not avail?
Do you want to teather to a laptop?
Do you want video capture and camera controls (zoom, light adjust, etc)?
Do you want Stereo Bluetooth headset support for streaming music and be able to take calls?
If you answered yes to most of these, you should stick with a WM device.
Otherwise, the benefits you will get from the iPhone will be well worth the it. I often will use my iPhone on Wifi to browse the internet instead of my laptop or desktop - it's that good. Really you will need to get your hands on an iPhone and decide. Some people have a hard time going from all those buttons to the "soft" keyboard of the iPhone. I was using a Touch before going to the iPhone as my main phone so the keyboard was an improvement for me.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far, your comments have been very helpful in making up my mind on what to get next.... Iphone, just ordered one !
Now my reasons are this, i've had lots of wm devices as i described in my first post and i think i've ran the course with them in terms of what i can do with them and what they can do for me. PLUS i'm not travelling around alot now for work as i'm more office bound now, so don't need the tomtom anymore. I also think the interface on the iphone is exceptional and after using loads of different themes on the xda, nothing comes close to the polished look and feel. Also, i've got to the point where i don't use any of the added programs i used to on my xda, except from the finger scrolling add ons such as pocketcm, s2sunlock and htc-touchflo cube.....
I hope i have many years of fun with this iphone when it arrives and will keep popping in here from time to time to catch up.....

Will your next device be WM?

I've used WM since the first SPV and have upgraded every year since. In the last 12 months I've had a Touch, Touch Diamond and now an HD. I also have an Ipod Touch.
As a die hard WM fan I'm wishing I had upgraded to the Iphone. WM is just so outdated and the UI is just so drab in comparison.
There are so many more apps available now fro iphone/ipod touch, They look better and often work better. With a new Iphone model out this year which is rumoured to run aps in the background and will you be tempted away from WM?

No way!
I´m aware that MS UI is not as good as should be, but the only idea of getting a "control" Iphone instead of choosing among hundreds of WM devices scares me
I´ll stick to MS with all it´s imperfections...I have hope that wm7 can be something really good.
Just my opinion.
i have had all sorts of devices and i have to say wm is where i will stay. i think that the ui is great actually. and i am sure that wm still has more apps
i dont really care about aesthetics as long as it does the job. which it does
I Love the variety of windows mobile devices and it's just what it's suppose to be a mini PC in the palm of my hand. And WM can do so much more than iphone so yep my next device will be WM
The first criterion for my mobile phone is that it is WinMo.
The second is that it has GPS.
Everything else after that is just icing the cake.
My phone is a mobile first, sat-nav second, stock-tracking PDA third. Why carry three devices when one will do it all?
The iPhone won't run my work stock-track application so it has to be WinMo.
I really want a pocket computer/phone, with a real os like Win XP or OSX that is just like on a desktop or laptop, but I haven't seen one yet, and I'm poor and will not be able to afford one when they come out! haha
But, I will be sticking with my windows mobile pda phones for now. It's the closest to what I need at the moment. Phone, email, spreadsheets, and pdf are my main needs, with gps/mapping close behind that. And from what I see, none of the other phones quite do what I want, except Palm Powered devices, but WM is more customizable, and looks better, so it wins out for me.
The only reason I would switch to an iPhone would be if it's OS can run Skyscape Applications. Otherwise, WM is just perfect for my needs.
WM
I still think WM is the best platform for overall usability and power. With WM 6.5 the UI has been simplified for easy access to important applications. Over all GUI looks a bit smoother. Can't wait to update my Treo 750 to WM 6.5.
Sadly (commercial) developement on WM has dried up. No one takes the platform seriously anymore, and yes I am jealous of the iphones many apps and better polished apps (eg compare facebook and last fm clients). Even basic things such as emails and sms messages look better on iphone.
I am very tempted to jump ship after owning a dozen different WM phones (am using HD at moment) but one thing stops me, freedom. I HATE itunes and dont want to surrender my media to it. I like copy and paste and use it all the time, I love BT file transfer, I love A2DP. iPhone is too controlled. If Apple ease up a bit then maybe id give them a try, but for now I will stick with my HD (hopefully WM 6.5 finds its way to it) for a long time. Unless I start to see some more polish from MS and some freedom from Apple, the HD will last me a long long time

Why not jailbreak the iphone? You can do more then. I've really enjoyed WM over the years. It hasn't really changed though since 2002! Not good is it? They really need to pull something impressive out the bag with WM7 to compete with the iphone.
I will never move away from WM now. I will also stay with HTC devices.......one reason is the fantastic support and apps available fom this site!!!
WM hands down! ive loved it since i got my first WM phone - The I-mate Jam which had WM5 on it right the way up until my Touch Diamond.
It is in every essence of the words a "pocket pc".
1. almost limitless customisation
2. abundance of apps and games
3. ability to have cooked ROM's
4. use it as a mobile/music&video player/camera/internet browser/GPS/gaming device/ dictation machine/personal organiser/office mobile/... the list goes on and on.
4. Freedom of choice unlike the iphone. which locks you down to using i(crappy)tunes to put any content on it.
I've become quite a fan of Windows Mobile (as many may know by my tweets). I had a very long history of the PalmOS (a small taste of Blackberry) before I jumped and I've never looked back even though I was concerned at the time.
If you really listen to the Microsoft vision (See Balmer's keynote for CES for example), they really have the best overall picture of how to take mobile smartphones to the next level. Also due to them being Microsoft, they have the best leverage to achieve that vision with the vast array of products they produce. This is where Android and Blackberry (and Pre) fail, no leverage of interoperability.
Now onto the iPhone. I have such a love/hate for Apple. They make beautiful (overpriced) products on the surface but when you dig deeper they are quite lacking for the money. The iPod clearly lacks features of many MP3 players (FM, Bluetooth, etc), the iPhone does this as well. The major flaw is the current OS they've released does not allow multiple apps to run, this is why simple features like cut-and-paste are missing. As a WinMob user, this is essential to have a solid smartphone OS.
My biggest hate for Apple throughout the 80s to now is the lock-in philosophy. Apple simply has control freak mentality in its culture. You have to buy everything in their stores (jailbreaking is illegal), the hardware has to be created by us, the software needs to be approved by us, etc. They really are the Anti to the Open Source philosophy. They really make Microsoft look like saints to the open source world.
So the question was whether my next device will be WM? I'm not sure. I just got the Samsung Saga i770 back in December so it will likely be at least a year before I switch phones again. By then version 6.5 will be out and until I actually play with the Honeycomb interface, I'm not exactly warm on the Zune-like UI. I have a Zune (I won) and don't really care for the UI. If I can keep the Today screen and customize it with 3rd party apps like I do today then I'd be cool in that area. That said, I try to keep an open mind and I'm not opposed to switching but I don't see Apple changing its philosophy anytime soon, RIM has improved but I'm still not sold, so I guess Android and the Palm Pre may be those options.
I also kind of like the concept of a watch phone if it was waterproof and could tether to any device around me which would free us from always carrying a specific form factor (sometimes you may want a pda, a netbook, tablet, a laptop or carry nothing).

I have been thinking about this a lot - I might switch to a palm pre if the feedback is good from early adopters or might want to see what the next generation of android devices are like.
My next device will PROBABLY be WM, but I can't make a guarantee on that.
I love WM's flexibility, customizeability, and power, but I loathe its sluggishness, blandness, and lack of fun/stylish/interesting apps.
Hopefully, MS launching an official app store will help with the last part. Unfortunately, I think the iPhone still has a big advantage here, since devs only have a single resolution and configuration to program for so they can make more "controlled" apps. I'm hoping MS helps on this by encouraging fullscreen WVGA development for 6.5 / 7.
If Android had actually been what I'd hoped (a mobile frontend to Google's whole web ecosystem, including integrated apps and picasa support), I'd probably be aching to jump ships. We'll see how both Android and WM develop in the next year or so before I get ready to make any switches.
WM is to stay with me (I mean HTC, because of the XDA-developers) for a long time
Cheers
Hmm. Well I am with Verizon and always get a new phone with NE2 deal. At the end of the year I get the deal. I won't ever switch to another carrier so as much as I like what I see in Palm Pre, I will not get it. Nor will I get an iphone for the same reason (and even more because you have to jail break it to get it working) or G1. Anyway, I think I will just wait until 2010 to get a new phone. I really wish WM7 was released sometime in 2010 because I know for sure I would wait to get it. But anyway, right now I am loving my XV6800 I got last year and will not give it up anytime soon.
I think what I might do is get an Ipod Touch HD (hoping Apple finally releases a widescreen version and higher res) when it ever releases. This way I will not miss out on all the cool apps (well the free ones at least). I connected one to my phone which was fun and will definetly do that if I get one.
I love Windows Mobile (so flexable, love tweaking it, all the apps, xda! and hope WM7 is released sooner then later. I might upgrade my XV6800 to WM6.5 but either way I hope to continue to be on Windows Mobile and my next phone will hopfully be a WM7 phone.
palm pre for me
How many phones are knobbled when it comes to trying to write a program to run on it. WM will take a fair amount of effort to learn how to do it, but it can be done. .NET for starters or Win32 C++ if you want to take a look round the engine room. Embedded C++ 3.0 and 4.0 are still available gratis from Microsoft's Web site. .NET requires Visual studio, but not the gratis versions. Not quite as wizzo as the finger flicking Touch interfaces, but what the hell. Have a go and see what you can come up with.

Why IPhone will beat them all.

After looking at the presentation of IPhone 3G v3.0 and already have read the articles about the WM v6.5 and v7.0, a huge disappointment came over me.
You see I am a top shouter in my environment for the HTC phones which are all equipped with the WM OS's.
The greatest impression on me where some articles about guys(who seemed in my eyes a real priority on this, i am dutch so not quickly impressed by anything), who wrote all similar story's about the WM v6.5/7.0. Stating Microsoft is not at all doing anything to compete with the Google and APPLE OS's. There are just very few improvements and absolutely not at all impressive enough as the IPhone OS.
Reading some article they are looking for a lead developer for the new core for WM v7.0 are not honored and contradicting, like saying oke guys i know the current OS is ****ty so we need to start over, can anyone help us?
That is not the sort of message I as WM lover like to hear.
It seems that Apple is just about the only one who is really listening to the users and they are working their ass off getting all requested functionality integrated. APPLE have done more on the OS in 1 year then Microsoft did on all development of the WM versions.
I am working at an IT company where the IPhone is making a serious entry and I am working at support and people asking me for information getting the IPhone working with the company applications. and guess what, it is sooooooo much easier getting it setup then every other WM-device i have seen. And they seem to shrink in number at the company.
Now I am really in love with the HTC-devices, but i am slowly getting confused by the latest IPHONE OS.
I expect that Microsoft will loose this battle due to their arrogance and dragging all major mobile company's down with it. So expect another crisis in a year or 3 because now the smart phones are booming but people will come to their senses and they switch to IPhone after their subscriber to the providers has ended.
So please bring me to my senses and say I am totally wrong!!
yes and no
the problem is migrators. people whove had there nokias and stuff then want a better device. theyll run to iphone dueto the flashy marketing and support
bu winmo is more like an old pair of sneakers. sure theyre ugly aan dirty
but they do the job they were built to do. in my opinion as long as they do there job making it work i can do my job making it look pretty. coz id rather get ther in my old confy sneakers to get there than getting blisters from a new pair
i dont think any die hard winmo fan will move not really because at the end of the day we always go back to those old trainers
ive got a headache now
stop making me use my brain
i went from iphone to iphone 3g to windows mobile
i prefer my diamond to be honest even thou iphone can do alot more in ways the diamond does more in other ways
hands down id rather go with diamond or pro
@jayjay8585
Thanks for your response.
I hope you are familiar with ice skating?
They where skating years and years on the normal skates and the fastest times stayed longer and longer on the list.
Then someone decided to change the skate(klikskate, the iron comes half lose when lifting the skate) so significantly everybody said out loud that will not work, so they tried it a bit but went back to their old skates(sneakers).
Until someone who always was just under the top 10 decided, oke I reeeeeeealy going to try this and trained for 2 years on it.
So the next major tournament this person broke all long standing records.
Now everybody is using the new ice skates and up until now, records keep broken almost every new major tournament.
Shortly: I half agree with the sneaker story but it will not hold on the long term.
Microsoft just messed up to big, so if Bill wants to see another billion or 2 added on the Forbes list he has to get serious on this.
Windows Mobile 7 is not even beta yet so how can you be making comparisons with that OS? And while apple has added features to bring it on par with modern smartphones I personally am too used to the freedom of using a device of my own choosing with whatever carrier I choose and not being tied to using apple software and hardware products.
Here is what I have to say about the iPhone. The iPhone............
iPhone = Flashy Fashiontoy laden with DRM Crap no one here wants. Period.

Quoted for the Mo-Fo'm truth!
How about the g1? It listens to its users the users and devs nake this phone better everydaay. I have had my for just over a week and don't know how I livd without it. I love how it works It can do all the iphone can and more. My main thing is it needs flash player other than that. also anyone seen or have any ideas on the new plam?
I personally wouldn't touch the G1 even if my life depended on it... Someone has to remove all the frickin' Google Crap from the OS (mandatory googlemail acc, anyone ?) before I'd be willing to shell out a few hundred bucks for one of these.
I'm not willing to let Google put a leash up my ass...
To the above guy. Besides making a mail account that's ur only leash. That beats being to to steve and bill in my opion. U can change the browser and well just about every u can get a lot of apps on line. U don't have to use the market that came on the phone everything is open.
the G1 I tested required a Googlemail Account.
Granted, I already have one and only Spam gets redirected there, but I don't want Google to know who i have as Contacts on my Sim and my Appointments no one has to read either.
Google on G1 = No Phone for me
Well whre are getting that they do that? And if they do why dosent everyone else? I figuer all cell phone data is almost public anyways
just wanted to add my 2 pence worth.
I've only had 2 WM devices so far, the XDA Exec and now the Touch Dual.
As much as I've enjoyed playing with these, I'm starting to really like the look of the iPhone. Everyone I speak to that has one say they love it because it does what is says on the lid. It works.
I'm fed up with having to reset my phone when it crashes on an incoming call, or re-syncing it to my BT car Hands free set...............
I've had to work hard and rely on the good devs here (thanks folks)to be able to get to a point where my phone is just about stable.
The iPhone is starting to look like a possability when my contract is up in six months
WM 6.5 will make it better as well as ROM Cookers. I have the Iphone 3G - in the box. Yes its flashy and its more fluid I like the control I have over my Touch HD. I like being able to flash it and try it out. I like the fact that I can change the BATTERY out on it. I like the ability to sync with Outlook, I like the fact that there are many many apps for the WM 6.1 and 6.5(when it becomes available).
And I like my screen resolution and Garmin XT NAV
Oh yeah.. Did I mention that I hate ITUNES and DRM?

you do realize that you can turn off syncing, which means that you wont send any data to the google acct. so none of your contacts/appointments will leave your phone, and gmail wont sync. if you root your G1 you dont even have to use a google acct.
This is an article from BRIGHTHAND:
Cut, Copy, and Paste
Confirming the earlier rumors, iPhone 3.0 will -- finally -- allow iPhone users to cut-and-paste and copy-and-paste. Naturally, the process for selecting text will take advantage of this device's multi-touch screen. This feature will be available in Apple's own software and third-party apps.
And it extends to more than just text. Users will be able to copy images and paste them into an email.
MMS, A2DP, Etc.
iPhone 3.0 will also mark the arrival of other features long available in the iPhone's competitors, including MMS messaging, Stereo Bluetooth, device search, and voice memos.
In addition, landscape support is being added to more of the bundled applications.
Apple is also going to release a new SDK (software developer kit) for handling streaming audio and video, including HDTV streaming.
Still No Multitasking
Apple had some good news and bad news for users. The bad news is that it's still not allowing multitasking because running third-party applications in the background is more than the device can handle. Scott Forstall, Apple SVP iPhone Software, who handled much of today's presentation, said that an IM application running in the background reduced the iPhone's standby battery time by 80%.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think the iPhone is able to beat anybody yet, as you can see, the above upgrade or fix to the coming iPhone 3 are qualities that should have been there since it's first release. They are still playing catch-up to Windows Mobile.
The only thing I like about the iPhone is the speed. Other than that, nothing else. With more powerful processor coming out, this will definitely be a brighter future for WM.

Sorry to see you are having trouble, but for me, my setup is very stable. No crashes nor freezes, so I am happy with Windows Mobile. BT works flawlessly too. I believe stability is related to what applications you have installed. I have about 350 applications and games installed, you just need to try them one by one and see which one causes the problem. This is the proceedure I do each time I upgrade my device. By the way, I have an HTC Advantage X7510. I just use my HTC Universal as the test subject nowadays.
I'd like to thank those brave enough to say that the iPhone does in fact pose a huge problem to WM, and those brave enough to say that they're willing to move away. Another thing I'd like to say is that being tied to a carrier/network that you don't like is not actually an argument against the iPhone, rather the circumstances surrounding it. Let's keep this thread based around an SIM-unlocked iPhone for a change. Also, let's just look at the OS, and not the extras HTC/Samsung/SE has overlayed on top.
Now, let's face it, WM is losing appeal- fast. WM is dynamic and flexible- almost like an open-source OS, but the UI is outdated and still bears an uncanny resemblance to it's oldest predecessor almost 10 whole years ago. Also, it can get laggy, and crashes even on stock ROMs, so there's another bunch of disadvantages.
Not much left. Let's hope WM7 saves MS.
I agree 100% with cktlcmd.
Thanks for putting it exactly how I would,
so I don't have to think.
This is what I'm feeling so far.......... (my two cents)
I love my wimo (6700, 8525, tilt and now touch Pro) and at first I use to tell people that only way that iPhone is making a killing is because how they advertised the phone.
People with iPhones use to be like your phone looks and feels like a brick. I will tell them how the wimo can do all types of things, so they started coming back to me and showing how once they jail break the phone they can do about all most the same thing. I would laugh and say well you still can't get mms, teathering, or cut/paste......3.0 is coming out for the iPhone, now I feel like hiding from the ones I laughed at.
If Microsoft is reading......please help us out, because the reason I love the phones is because they can do wonders but now I'm starting to feel like an old school guy with and old phone not willing to give up.............We (I hope I can speak for all the wimo people) spend at alot of time and money on these phone and just want a little something back, beside a new phone......think about the inside the phone and help us out so we can stay and be the top dogs again.

iPhone vs AT&T fuZe

First of all I would like to say many thanks to all the developers in this site. I think you all have the talent and know how of making a plain windows phone into something incredible. My thanks to the maker of energy rom, and all those fantastic developers. Helping to make this comunity greater and better. I am going to miss you all. Yes I have moved into the iPhone community.
Let Me just tell you all this is my opinion and yours counts as well. I have been a very avid windows mobile user, but more so an htc fan then any. I write this thread to let you all know of my findings from switching to an apple device. with that said I also would like to emphisize that my findings are based off of device and not network.
iPhone vs windows mobile
*landscape supported in both
*copy and paste supported in both thanks to OS 3.0
*user interface- on iPhone comes built in with a nice OS
-on htc nice as well but customizable. Thanks to xda forum
*physical keyboard- only built in to some htc devices
-on iPhone does not include a physical keyboard but I feel this product in terms of progress is moving foward faster. So what I mean is this product does not include a physical keyboard you can purchase one. But the soft keys included are nice with a little practice. Even thow landscape is not supported on most device but it is on the most use full apps.
*productivity- email, document editing, mms, tethering, auto spell check,
WM- supports all of these except spell check is an extra step
iPhone - supports email, doesn't come with word editing apps but i have purchased docs to go which I like and will allow me to get free updates.($5) mms thanks to mms not supported thanks to AT&T but it will by summer( check iPhone alley for up to date news or engadget. Tethering again thanks to AT&T no sir again to be announced, auto spell check is default and a plus since o generally suck in spelling.
* customizble- supported on both via xda and jailbreak, I still like the OS so I don't need to until I get bored but I'm pretty happy now.
*UI
- wm/not very user friendly but customizable thanks to xda. Hope fully windows gets the clue.
-iphone/ very user friendly , auto spell check on the fly, dual touch, browser a plus still waiting on firefox but iPhone browser is much faster. No flash support this is a downside the the iPhone. The text magnifier is a handy tool. Easy access tools like app store handy and comes with pre approved handy tools.(and free apps ass well)
*multimedia on both is pretty equal
*gaming is a dead blow away based off of amount of developers and screen size On the iPhone , dual touch helps in dramatic amounts.
My thoughts- altough the iPhone is not the best choice for everyone. There are pros and cons for both device. This being a WM forum I expect "flamming" but instead write why you stay with wm(not htc related because I love xda and htc and don't wish to sell my fuze) i find apples iPhone is moving slot faster progress wize in terms of when they started and what it has accomplished to this date. Windows made a big mistake delaying development on windows 7.0 OS. 2010 just shows they where not ready. Thank you all
My 2 cents on user friendliness.
I would think, from a perspective of someone who likes tweaking, that wm is much more user friendly since it allows me to customize it to my heart's content rather than jailbreaking the thing to even do basic things like changing the background to every page.
The iphone is more idiot proof than user friendly. In apple's classic style, anything that provides the user to customize the system is completely locked down unless hacked. what you can use is what they allow you to, not what you want to.
multi-touch is nice and is something i wish more smartphones will adopt in the future but I don't feel like it's a "game changer" especially gaming on a smartphone is not something that's that fancy. there are plenty counterpart apps for both OS that are mirrors of each other, like the light saber, tetris, bubble breaker, etc etc.
oh i forgot to mention, tethering... it is possible for the fuze to tether thanks to some of the resident geniuses of XDA who saved many of us from having to pay 30-50 bucks extra for tethering. the iphone's tethering is still in the process since I highly doubt att will let them get away with it for free or atleast without some haggling between apple and att.
my conclusion to this is that the review is good, i just don't approve of apple's take on "customization" (or lack thereof).

Thank you for you input, I agree on customizabilty. This is basic stuff. It's your phone you should be allowed to personalize it by default. What I can do with out jail break is add my own short cuts off the web and changes some of my back ground. My friend has managed to change his icons to a Laker theme, and mms enabled on his phone. Other have managed a vista ultima desktop with video background. Which to me is cool but I doubt I find it usefull productive wize. Gaming on the iPhone is different. I encourage all to take some time to YouTube developed games, ping pong, archers, brickbreaker revollusion, tap tap revenge 2, stick wars , and ifighter. This is thanks to multi touch. But I thank you for your input. And tethering is enabled for free you just have to click a link in iPhone alley. And this is money saving as well. Thank you and more should write this will let Windows mobile step up their game.
Being a long time windows mobile and long time iPhone user, here is my take on this:
iPhone is fun, smooth and pretty nifty - for someone who doesn't rely on a device to get stuff done.
WM is a slower, sometimes ugly beast that gets **** done. It may not be the prettiest but if I need it to do something, it does it.
Case and point - I manage 10 separate business units and I rely on notifications to remind me about things. The iPhone just doesn't cut it, even with its 3.0 upgrade. Without a rock solid time specific task function/reminding system that can be snoozed, it's worthless for me.
What the iPhone does better:
Web - hands down it is a better experience
Email - Again, much better IMO on the iPhone
Note taking - iPhone stomps all over WM here especially with Evernote. The newest Evernote is absolutely incredible on the iPhone.
Pictures - My fuze is much better in this area and I don't want to buy the newest iPhone to get auto zoom.
3rd party programs - iPhone may have 50,000 apps, but WM has the apps "I" need to run my business, at least at this point.
I hemmed and hawed about it for a few weeks but I gave my iPhone to my 17 year old son who doesn't need a business class device and I got an iPod touch. I can still have nifty web browsing on the go and most of the benefits of apps like Evernote.
WM is still king in my mind but there are some things that would push it over the top in regards to the Apple offerings:
1. Capacitive screen - It's amazing and makes the resistive touch of the normal PDA's seem old and outdated.
2. Give us a Word/Excel/PP Viewer program in addition to the damn programs included that rip the formatting to shreds of anything remotely complex that we open with them. Granted, there are other programs that have better compatability that the built in office apps, but come on MS, Office is YOUR program!
3. This is for hardware vendors - Get your **** together and actually include driver support so your devices look and act as smoothly as the iPhone. I have a fuze that has more memory and a faster processor (in MHz only I know) than the iPhone but it's a dog. Gimme some smooth eye candy! I look at this damn device for hours per day, at least make it more enjoyable! MS needs to step up to the plate here and realize that the 3rd party hardware vendors are the ones causing the problems. Make them have to certify devices in the areas of performance and appearance before they launch.
4. Put more than 5 people on task to put an upgraded mobile operating system out. I am embarrassed for MS that they would do something like that. I don't care if they are the best of the best, mobile computing is the future and you guys are missing the boat by such a large margin it isn't even funny in the areas of usability and looks.

iPhone vs WM
I agree with asbestos, if I need a real fancy music player, I'll put stickers on my "work" WM Touch Pro. My Touch Pro does WORK just fine.
I'll pay for my TP with SPB Mobile Shell 3.0, before given a fancy music player.
Someday, somebody will realize you can play music and videos on WM. Granted Windows Media Player sucks. But there are other multimedia apps.
What I will yield to Apple is our MS developers as a whole SUCK compared to the tons of great apps being created daily for iPhone, that could be made for WM. SOmebody needs to tell WM dev's to just sit down and copy every app they make. Cause WM is not the best in ingenuity.
My two cents,
JWB
Stickers ?!? Really?
That's the most educated piece of mine you can come up with. Better yet how about you mension konomi or any other great media player and recomend windows come with a built in finger friendly and eye candy friendly UI. Yes windows does need to look into developers from this site to make their products better.
Business over entertainment

my friend you are a perfect example to why windows is best for you.
I'm not saying and nor do I feel you are saying that I beleive the iPhone is better then a fuze. I beleive there is no such thing as an iPhone killer simply because every phone is built for a specific user.
In this case the user is a business user. I can't imagine typing countless emails and documents simply by using the soft keys altough I have seen some impressive typing on the iPhone. Not everyone is talented enough to move like the do. But I find my self getting faster each day. The built in keyboard is an advantage that I don't have on the iPhone. What weighed in my mind was windows mobile first came out in 1975 I beleive... And it has years of experience over the iPhone. The iPhone has 3 years in the market yet development for this device has excelled. What I beleive is windows took it's customers for granted said here is this product enjoy it but never develops after that? Windows 6.1 windows 6.5 windows 7.0 ? These are all slow developed UI. Windows give your consumers what they want not honey combs. Come out with 7.0 already.
Why does everyone who goes to an iPhone write one of these long, stupid, and annoying "goodbye" posts justifying their reasons for going to an iPhone? Just sell your HTC, get an iPhone, and go away. It is that easy.
My take is both are excellent phones/devices.
The reason I went to the HTC over the iPhone isn't a bias against the iPhone, but because I've used PPC/windows mobile OS's since the days of the Dell Axim X5. I'm comfortable with the WM OS, know how to tweak & hack it, customize it to suit me. The iPhone OS, really can't do a lot with it, as far as customization. Plus, the iPhone, is really intended as a "multimedia" device.
The TP/Fuze is too, but, it's not as integrated as the iPhone. I don't play MP3's, movies or anything like that. I use my TP/Fuze as a business device, and it does it very well.
Either phone, you really can't go wrong, it's a choice issue.

Say What? How does Evernote "stomp" all over OneNote? What does Evernote do that OneNote does not?
i hate these comparisons wars with smartphones going on. its like console wars or format wars. the iphone isnt bad, infact its very good. you choose the product you like the best. its not like its something you have to show off to the world and that you where the wisest because you choose it and others didnt because they are tards. i find it very hard to recommend windows mobile phones. they can do a lot if you put some work into it like a hobby. i chose between the touch pro and the iphone and went for the touch pro and i must of thought it better for me cause i even paid alot more for it. my entire family has iphones (cept my sister who has a palm centro) and that works for them. i think the touch pro is better in alot more ways but the iphone is there for people who need something easy for them.

switch to iphone?

I hate it but every company makes apps for the iphone. Windows mobile always left in the cold when it comes to new applications. Random companies make apps for the iphone. The Weather Channel, CNBC, eBay, NBA, MLB, ESPN, Showtime plus thousands of other companies choose to make apps for the iphone only. I hate it but when my contract runs out i might swich to the iphone. Anyone feeling this way?
No. I can't stand the iPhone.
Most of those "apps" are just links to websites... like Widgets in WM6.5. Actually if you use the web browser Iris... it will display the iPhone version of the site. Or you could just make a widget of iPhone version from the iPhone URL.
Aside from the few cool games the iPhone has, it doesn't offer anything extraordinary.

Mmm, gotta disagree with you on that. Are you speaking from experience? Do you own an iPhone? I agree with the OP, I've been frustrated by the useful apps that have come out for the iPhone while WM has been all but forgotten.
android?
You could switch to a nice android device. I really like my g1 quite a bit. The app store doesn't have the volume of apps that the iphone one does, but if you factor out all the sound boards and fart machines, there isn't a huge difference.
Also, android is a platform, not a single device. I'm betting long term, you will see android win market share. It wouldn't be the first time that apple lost out with a closed, proprietary system. They did the same thing when competeing with IBM and Microsoft, and lost out there too.
I hate the Iphone, not because I'm jealous.
Its just, well, a ****ty phone all around.
Without its apps, what can it do?
Browse the webs slowly,
and make calls.
No camera / recording (untill recently)
Camera sucks anyway in quality and effects
Cant MMS,
no removable memory or battery!!

Also, then think about how much money you will spend with your iphone for mainly crappy apps that people make just to make money... and remember that the only way to customize it is to hack it, and risk breaking it... and even still it isnt very customizable.
Its your choise.
edit nevermind
Android is gaining a number of apps in the Android Market. Some of the apps mentioned by the OP are now available on Android and more a coming online all the time.
i made the switch.
bloody glad i did.
took a while to get into the scene / getting around the more restricted OS, but i'm glad i did. looking forwards to running android on my kaiser, but i'll probably never go back to winmo (unless 7 is worth it).
as for the apple ******ry fanboism, the antiapple fanbois are almost as bad. if something works how you want it, **** what others think.
good for you...
Gotta say, there's still a place in my heart for WinMo, and I'm really looking forward to WM7, hoping not to be disappointed. But once you jailbreak an iPhone, it's superior in basically every way. I'm sick to death of Job's draconian resistance to JB, but fortunately the community has some geniuses who can tell him where he needs to go stick his head.
Valkryomnia may hate it, but that's only because he clearly doesn't have a jailbroken iPhone, because all the things he's talking about are laughably false except for the non-removable battery and memory. However, those aren't big deals for me because at this point the choice is 32GB of non-removable memory on iPhone vs 16GB of removable on WM. Not a hard choice for me. And as for the battery, I probably will get a new phone by the time it dies anyway, so... meh.
It's funny, but at this point the thing I miss most about WM is having to fiddle around with it to get it to work. With a JB iPhone I really don't have to, not because you can't customize it (you pretty much fully can), but because it really just works. And giving up the fun of fiddling with it is a small price to pay for also giving up the frustration of the constant crashes, memory problems, incompatibilities, abandoned software that has promise but never gets finished, flashing, reflashing, and flashing, flashing, flashing constantly, etc. It's just a world of difference.
I jumped from the n-gage into the WM world and its disappointing at best in the games deppartment.
Emus and ports are good, but the iphone games are looking better each day.
Plus, 3 years ago when the iphone came out, M$ made a lot of promisses that WM could be as good as and i havent seen any yet.
I still remenber a youtube video showing the (soon to come out) Windows Vista gadgets running on the WM... where are they?
I love WM and sometimes i miss a FUN Application and Games that iPhone have but at all i can say that the iPhone is made for the Kids for peoples betwen 14 and 18 years Because the WM is more for Bussines Peoples etc.
So our HTC Phones are more Stylish for Example i use Blackstone.. we can`t even compare iPhone Vs Blackstone.
So if someday HTC start to support the device better and make new apps often some for bussines some just for fun... you know what will heppand.
I only don`t know one thing.
If i was a owner of HTC and i want to Grown Alot alot more... the 1st thing that i will do is More Support with ROM`s with Apps i can tell you with sure that if WM have the same FUN apps like iPhone and even better NO ONE WILL BUY an iPhone!!!
And i wonder why HTC don`t kick this iPhones from the Market they can do it very easy.
Even that we dont have alot WM apps made by HTC or other i still prefer to have a stylish bussines device that have many futures and potential in the future
So if you are under 18 then just buy iPhone )))

I agree with that!
I've been a windows mobile user for a couple of years and while I love tweaking everything and writing apps in c#, I'm quickly growing tired of it falling so far behind the iphone and android. 6.5 is really just a new start menu and lock screen with WM2003 underneath. Back when I had a tytn I loved flashing new roms, but recently I've lot interest in it, especially when the benefits aren't really that great in terms of features.
My contract is up in January and at the moment I'm leaning towards an iphone. I like the look of android (plus I would be able to write apps for it in java), but it doesn't feel that complete to me.
My main uses for a phone are:
Web browsing - nothing beats the iphone here. Opera is nice but its painfully slow. Opera mini is also very good but the rendering doesn't look that nice.
Facebook - the iphone app is by far the best, and the windows mobile one is a joke.
Twitter - there are decent clients for all 3
Email (not push) - Pocket outlook isn't finger friendly, so its iphone or android here, but I haven't seen the android email client that much.
Writing apps - I'm happy to write java or C#, and hate objective C
Random apps - The iphone is a clear winner here
Golf scorecards with GPS - I wrote one for windows mobile, but nothing I can write could compare to apps like airvue for the iphone
Satnav - I love igo, so windows mobile wins here
Music - Once more, the iphone blows everything else away (S2P is nice, but still laggy on my diamond).
I think that if the HD2 was android then it would be a serious contender, but unless anything amazing comes out within the next 3 months I'll be jumping ship to the iphone (and probably jailbreaking it straight away).
Going back a year, I was one of the 'iphone haters', and I still hate the mac fanboy mentality of apple is best whilst blocking out all forms of logic and reason. Now I just want something which does everything I need easily and quickly.
18 months ago, if I knew I'd be thinking like this, I probably would've punched myself in the face.
same here.. i owned a o2 mini for years now using elf but when my contract finish.. hmmm 75% chance i will get iphone - hopefully by then it will have removable storage and radio..
1 i like from iphone is speed - and almost (never?) crash..
I'm not an apple fanboy, I have an ipod touch but have never owned an iphone because I like to customise my phones too much & I know you can't really do that with an iphone. Having said that, I think it's so stupid how some people pretend that the iphone isn't a good phone just because they have some sort of issue with apple or the number of people that use their products. Say what you want about the closed OS or whatever, but I don't see how you can deny that the iphone completely changed the cell phone business and for the average user there are few phones that are as easy to use and have as an asthetically pleasing interface as the iphone.
I do love the HTC design and style, but why is it always bad on hardware?
The ram and speed upgrades are always small and the video drivers are sad at best.
Its true, the WM ppcs were made for business, and never had a real "gamer liberation"... that, for me, is the problem with them.
I wanted a cheap ppc that could be, like the magician (qtek s100/s110), way ahead of its time.
All the phones I see around me are slower than my magician from 2003.
Thats why I am starting to look at the iphone.
Yes.. befor more than a year when i was looking for a new Device just to say that here in Bulgaria we don`t have so good contracts etc so when you want a new Device you just need to Buy it by yourself Cash.
So from the time i start to use Mobile Phones i always own a Nokia and i always use the latest models befor to move in WM i was on Symbian and i use the Nokia almost everyone from N series.. but befor a year i was thinking i need something new something diferent and powerfull...
and the Blakcstone just come out on the market this days and he amazed me with the Screen with thedesign and with many other things...
So the Blackstone was more expensive than the iPhone 3G here and many peoples told me better buy a HTC device this Blackstone ROCK some peoples say buy iPhone so beause everyone talk about iphone and i want something diferent that iphone because i hate when everyone use the same thing.... and the iphones become something like a madness i decide to buy my Blackstone and here cost me $900 around the iPhone 3G cost on the same time around $600 so i buy the expensive one HTC and after more than a year of use... im feeling a bit desapointed for this.
I love my Blackstone and he look cool and is a good device but i hate that i understand this later that HTC didn`t give alot support to the products they make.. so when i register here in that forum i see that many peoples Coocking ROM`s and some of the ROMs can be better than the original one..but im asking myself WHY THIS PEOPLES must to do ROMS by themselfs where is the HTC COMPANY now?
If someone say Ok we have ROMs here and etc fine but where are the FUN Enterteinment apps for our Device?
Nobody do anything for WM all USA companyes make apps for iPhone so in internet they are thousend and thousend and everyday something new.
Some peoples here try theyr best to do something but this is not enought HTC must really to think about this.. because this is a serious problem and i think in the future if they didn`t do anything to fix this problem they will lose alot costumers .....
Now i don`t like how the iPhone look... i prefer my Blackstone design i don`t like the Apple but i can`t say on the Black to say its White...really i play with some iphones and they are very FAST interface and responding to the touch and you are able to have so much FUN with that device...
Someone will say the device is made for Bussines and to calling but this is not true if i want to calling i will buy a phone for $30 without any OS and will not have delay in the ringing will not crash and etc and will be ablel to calling and etc.
Now i seriously think that soon i will be totaly pissed..from all this and will need to buy an iPhone 3G the problem is that like i say we dont have a contracts and now if i wana buy it i need to pay cash around $500 and what to do with my Blackstone? i can`t just spend money for phones like this.
Maybe i need to sell my Blackstone to take some money and to spend money buying an iPhone i hate that liek i say im not iPhone fan...but............. just HTC lose me like a costumer.
Befor a Year if someone tell me that i will buy an iPhone and will wana sell my HTC i will not believe him but this is the truth....
Not Fun Apps, Not Software not ANything they just sell you a expensive device and you can download a few ringtones from the HTC Club... THANK YOU

oh really? Please explain. No you cant, that is completely false. Show me an alternate UI? So me multi tasking? Show me anything other than the possibility of changing an icon lol. The iphone is an app launcher, plain and simple. You simply cant customize it, you can just put different apps on it.

HTC HD2 versus iPhone, Blackberry Storm 2

Hello,
I have been recently thinking about changing my HTC Touch Cruise for something newer. To my mind obviously came: HTC HD2, iPhone, Blackberry Storm2.
I know that specifications-wise, HTC wins. BUT...
I have recently experienced the new Blackberry and realized that: the operation system works much quicker and nicer than Windows which HTC uses. It also seems to have less problems -> my current HTC needs a good hard restart once a week or so, because it freezes on more demanding films or some music.
I thought that Windows has much more applications available - well, I am not so sure any more once I realized that thesaurus.com produced their dictionaries for... iPhone and Blackberry. Windows has lost its market and is not taken into account by the newest developers.
I am also wondering whether 4.3'' isn't a little bit too much -> I won't be able to put it into my pocket any longer!
What do you think? HTC seems to have created a very beautiful palmtop, full of great specifications but it has also committed one crucial mistake - it used Windows...
I would be grateful if you could share with me your opinions. Maybe my fear is unjustified and the newest HD2 works perfectly in all the aspects easily beating the competition?
I have to agree with you.
I have been a WM fan for the last 5 years or so and have become disilusioned with the OS. I too was looking for a change and had been watching the LEO. This is indeed a good hardware spec, but imho let down by WM6.5. I decided that I was after a better consumer experiance and opted for the iPhone. Everyone raves about them for a long time now so I decided (after much researching) that I would try one. I have not been let down by it yet. Mind you, I've only had it 3 weeks. I'm taking a punt that in 18 months or so, WM will have caught up or Andriod will have matured, but until then, I'll take a walk on the dark side.
So far I'm loving the fact that is just seems to work and it integrates with my car hifi perfecly. I can now play music and do hands free over Bluetooth. Under WM I could only do handsfree. Surfing the internet is now almost as easy as on my desktop. Safari browser beats anything else I've tried so far. The on screen keyboard was a worry at first, but it's easy to use, especialy in landscap (I have big thumbs). As a music player, well it beats WM any day of the week.
I know I will eventualy hit it's limitations, and when I do I'll consider jailbreaking, much like using custom ROMs from here realy. Untill then I'll keep an eye on the mobile development and look forward to seeing what happens in 18 months.
Good luck with your search, for now I have found my answer, I hope you find yours.
Mav
Personally I'd go for the HD2, as I rank spec more than software. The iPhone is a but too common and its pricing is a far too high for what you get (mins and txts etc). Blackberry has the same problem its too common, I know loads of people with Blackberrys who only use them for Facebook, but if your the kind of person who send and receieves loads of e-mails get a BB as they do it better than WinMo and iPhone.
Alex
Here we go again..........
Leo of course
Well I have been WM for several years and thought I would give the iPhone a trial. A BIG MISTAKE. Its dredful and im getting a HD2 next week.
I thought i'd add my comments to this, i've been predominantly symbian s60 / win mob for years now due to the fact that they "do" everything. But i think its fair to say that windows in all guises comes with the fact that as soon as you start to ask a bit of it, it sticks it's fingers up at you and stops working (symbian too, but to a lesser degree). Usually resulting in a reboot. I recently had an upgrade to do so i started researching into what i might get. In the end, after a spate with symbian, i v much wanted a win mo device but was ever so curious about the iphone. So many ppl couldn't be wrong, right? I was also deeply tempted by the blackberry bold too. I ended up going for the iphone as the upgrade and bought a TP2 as well. I just couldn't do the iphone thing on its own in case i hated it.
Pleasingly, i don't. The iphone is everything a win mo phone isn't, and vica versa. The iphone is completely dependable, never misses a beat, does what it does do perfectly and apart from some of the crazy apps, completely dull. It is frustratingly good. Even multitasking isn't really much of an issue due to push notifications and the like. I'd love to say the screen res is an issue but it never is. Safari is in a league of it's own. But it is dull. I use it as my everyday phone because it's dependable, but i use my TP2 to mess about with, i've had that many different ROM's on it it's silly, i follow forum progress with different things going on with bated breath, excited to see if they can pull this new rom off, or a linux port. It's exciting, i can modify the hell out of it and personalise it my way. I can send files via bluetooth without having to jump through hoops (unlike the iphone).
So, it comes down to what you want it to do, and if you can put up with less or more customization. There is a lot to choose from out there now and it's hard to decide. Look at the palm pre, and droid, and what about the n900 0n maemo?? Whatever you decide, you'll end up with a really good bit of kit, cos the mobile world it going potty with new stuff at the mo.
Just one last note, in defence of win mo, it may be getting a bit left behind in terms of bling, but it still remains one of the most functional os's out there, it's just that the young guns have caught up now.
Hmmm as I don't like iPhone (because everyone has it) and I wouldn't go Sony Ericsson (because I don't believe in their great ability of doing palmtops), I am personally trying to find reasons for continuing with HTC.
1.Is Windows 7 going to be released "soonish", so that if I buy HD2 now I might get some (hopefully) acceptable o/s?
2.There is also Droid Eris / HTC Dragon / HTC Passion / whatever it is called. If it is "HD2 on Google Android 2.0" then the question arises:
------is it just the case of software? If yes, I assume xda-masters will sooner or later allow easy migration between these two systems, or are there any technological obstacles? If this were true then this would be the best option -> One phone if you get bored - you can always swap to another o/s...
3. What was the market response to Android 2.0? What do you guys think about it, as compared with Windows?
I'm using Android at the moment having used WM for the past few years. It's version 1.5 and I'm loving it. Can't wait for 2.0 to come out for the Hero.
It hardly ever needs a reset - it 'just works'
The HD2 is one bad boy! No one knows when Windows 7 going to be released...maybe 3rd Q of 2010. But WM6.5.1 should be a lot sooner for the Leo...
I think its funny that every ppc that htc release, we seem to have this debate "blah" vs iphone, or is "blah" the iphone killer, this has been going on since the touch diamond, personaly i dont think any ppc can be compaired to the iphone, as ppc's are tools with functionality where as the iphone is a toy, it has no real functionality, yeah it looks good and there are lots of apps availble for them but how many of them are useful? and as for "killing" the iphone its clear by now that it has a far too big a fan base to be killed off, anyway thats my 2 cents lol

Well said!
+ 1 for this!
Every new phone and threads start with comparatives...
Very, Very UNFAIR comparison!!!
Seriously, HD2, go against someone ur OWN size (aka Xperia X10, i8910 HD, Motorola Milestone, N900, Acer F1)!
Leave iPhone alone! It's NOT even a smartphone (moreover not even a basic phone as it still lacks some basic phone functionality that people had for over a decade) as it doesn't even do multitasking...
What's "blackberry"?
bye
