Touch Pro and tethering woes(battery) - Touch Pro, Fuze General

i recently recieved the touch pro as upgrade from my mogul. to be clear the only internet options i have are dial up or tethering and i prefer the ladder. however im finding i cant stay tethered long without running out of battery. where with the mogul i could tether for 12 hrs straight i cant stay on more than 3hrs. i know its power consumption to charhe and it all runs through the battery. my question is would the cradle with seperate charger and usb plugs do anything? would wifi router software work better than tethering? can i bypass the battery and draw power from the cable itself? any help or tips/suggestions from people with similar situations would be great as i have seached here and ppcgeeks with no luck(thus far,im still looking)

60 views and no ideas? Ouch

when you tether your phone, are you using usb cable to connect the phone to your computer? if so, why not set it to charge the phone while it's connected by usb cable? that way u'll just keep drawing power out of the computer and won't have to worry about phone battery draining quickly

it is set that way. the problem is, with the radio running to stay on the internet and with it sending data through the cable, it seems the load on the phone is too great for the charger to keep up sot aht the battery doesnt die down. And since it seems (correct me if i'm wrong) that the way power flow works is all through the battery (charger -> battery -> device) there is no way that i am aware of to keep a charge on it greater than the power consumption. This is why i was asking of docks such as the expansys one http://www.expansys-usa.com/d.aspx?i=169488 where it has seperate data and power plugs on the bottom would work.

Couple of things to clarify
1. That expansys cradle does have two ports on the bottom, but only one is USB/Power the other is a line out for audio, so that will not help you at all, accept to hold your phone up when you're using it.
2. A wifi router option will consume more power than tethering alone, and in my experience tethering, it does infact keep my battery charged. Are you sure that your usb cable is charging your phone? Do you have the option disabled that allows it to charge whilst connected to a computer?
Thx!

r u at home when you are tethering and do you have Bluetooth on your laptop

the option is checked, as i have double checked since you all have suggested this. yes i have bluetooth on my desktop but i would prefer to stay away fromt that option as its slower than usb tethering. the only thing i think may be effecting me that i just htought of was that i have had the usb cable plugged in the front side not on the direct Mobo connection. i will try this tonight and report back any success

I have the same problem, I've tried using the cable that it came with, the cable that came with my htc-6700, and my girlfriends Blackberry cable. It will usually begin to charge while tethered(PDANet) but quickly will revert to the battery. I'm using my girlfriends laptop as mine has a fried harddrive, her power cable jack is loose as if someone pulled the cord hard to the side, this causes it to switch from external power to battery very quckly sometimes. I thought that this caused the problem I had so I didn't bring it up before. I have my phone set to charge when USB is connected and I do not use any USB hubs. I've tried tethering over Wifi but I don't seem to get as high quality of a connection.(Bittorrent speeds extremely slow, although a speed test showed 2134kbps downspeed) I hope this can provide more information to figureout what is causing it.

Try this! Make sure it isn't causing your phone to get to warm and causing this issue, I had a similar problem with wifi and gps usage hmhm,
Open your keyboard whilst it is tethered and see if that makes any difference, and I'm not sure if it is possible to turn the screen off on the phone while tethered, but if you can do it!
Let us know what happens!
Kewlj1313

hmm...i wonder what's causing the power consumption to revert to battery source instead of usb cable. have you tried the dongle that came with the device? It supposedly allows you to charge while saving another usb port for headset...etc. Maybe it's possible to charge via wall charger and tether through usb cable at the same time?
or like previously mentioned, charge via usb cable when it's connected to the computer, but tether using bluetooth. I suspect the data tethering through usb is causing the "charge" to drop.

here is what i have found. First the power source must be sufficent ie 1 amp or 1000 ma use an ipod usb charger for moble htc one for home. Second the dongle will only let you charge on the mini port not the e-mini on the side. Problems iam working on is reducing battery drain by shunting off screen but it doesnt work with usb dun. it does work with wmwifirouter but i think there is a heat issue because it stops charging after awhile. Best sessions i have are usb with battery all way charged bthen watch it with battery window open same time.

criddlem,
THanks for doing the footwork on this one.
Shouldn't the bluetooth 2.0 network connection be capable of up to 3Mbit data rates in one direction? I wonder out loud if anyone on this forum has tested connectivity over BT? I don't know how this is handled in the hardware and it could be that the BT only gets a fraction of that in the real world. Of course, the laptop would have to be BT2.0+EDR as well to get that kind of rate in the first place.
Of course, running yet another device at full pace may just drain the battery that much faster!
Have you tested data rates over both BT and USB?
Thanks!

I tether quite frequently using a USB cable as well and I have found my phone always maintains a charging state. It does seem odd that yours isn't. I do know that I am not using the cable that came with the phone............

I was going to suggest something similar.
A couple of years ago I had a sub-notebook that, for lack of a better term, had "sucky" usb ports. When I measured the current supplied was ~100mA. Enough to trickle charge my old TyTN, so it's amber charge light lit up, and I thought all was good.. till it gave me the ugly "Place on charge to prevent data loss message."
Do you have anything there to measure with?

Hi, sorry I may have misunderstood what you are trying to do, but I bought this cradle on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HTC-Touch-Pro...photoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262
It has a seperate power in line for charging (including a 3 pin UK plug) and a USB sync line in the back of the device.
I belive this device charges from the mains while being connected via USB to the PC. Of course it could be charging through the USB but for me it charges quickly and is connected to PC at the same time so does what I need.
The swivel to use in landscape is an awesome feature too. Battery for me does run down pretty quick, away from cradle, but then I have been used to previous poor battery performance WM devices.
Cheers, Blair

well Erikr88, u said that u have the option check (to allow a charge while connected to your pc) and that u double checked to make sure. well go back and uncheck it as their is no option to check a box and charge while connected to ur pc. the option u can check is to NOT allow a charge, so uncheck it and c if that corrects the problem.

Hi, You don't have the box ticked in the battery screen do you ?
the one that says
When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC
this should be unticked.

Hi Dean
Now I dont have it ticked !!
Any other idea's?
The problem could also be your usb line or usb port. try some alternatives first.
Tried everything, different usb leads, different sockets even different laptops !!
Help
Same problem here. But i changed the USB cable and problem solved. Did u tried it, with the official USB cable from HTC? (I guess so, just to check)
Yep I did !!
Will try again when I get home though..
Thats strange... my TP came with UK power adapter, so I couldnt use AC power until I get an adapter (4 days)... in these days I always charged via USB (all night long)
Well I tried the official usb lead and it charged last night, Im now using the official lead again using same laptop and same usb port and guess what !!! It wont charge again
Have I a faulty touch pro?

Hi,
this is sounding kinda weird..
What kind of wall charger came with the phone, mine is a wall adapter that i plug the USB lead into to charge the phone
So i know my USB lead works as this charges the phone with both the adapter and via USB on any PC ( i have tried home and work PC's)
Sounds like it could be a handset issue then ???
mine is a Vodafone handset that i bought unlocked and flashed with a different ROM and its working fine..

Laptops can be a bit funny about USB charging, I remember one laptop I had wouldn't charge my phone (SE K800i at the time), unless it was on mains power. The laptop had to be powered up while on the mains, with no USB devices plugged in, then it would supply power to the ports.
My work laptop is also a bit funny about it, I had to disable powering down of the USB ports otherwise it won't power them back up, but since if nothing is connected there's not much of a problem. There is also the possibility it's powering the port, which will charge the phone, but not enough power to actually make it worthwhile, you can check to see how much power is going to the ports by looking under device manager. So you might want to check it's not a problem with your laptop.

This is exactly what mine turned out to be. At work I've got a Dell Optiplex 745 tower and none of the USB ports put out enough power to charge my phone and have the phone on. I've got wifi turned off but the data, EDGE, is always on. If the display is on and I'm in Storage mode there's very little charging going on. It doesn't drain quickly but it definitely isn't going up. If I'm in sync mode it drains pretty quickly and it seems as tho it's not even charging at all.
What I do now is plug it in at work and turn off the display. Kinda sucks but I need my phone fully charged at all times.
I have the same problem....
the usb and the factory usb are different if u have looked carefully
firstable, the shape of the heads are different. secondly, there are 4 pins inside usb and 6 pins inside the factory usb...I guess that's the problem.
Try messing with the USB to PC settings. I know my TP was acting funny and not charging, and after i disabled network functionality, i think it started charging. GL.
Thamks for all the replys, if done everytjhing sometimes it will charge sometimes it wont, I have it connected to my laptop all day for internet sharing, it has charged up very slowly twive, and not at all 8 or 9 times, same usb slot , laptop plugged into mains, official usb lead used ( it never charges from another usb lead )

Have you tried it plugged into a desktop computer? It would rule out the laptop being the problem if it didn't work. You could also use a mini-usb cable, which could also prove if the official cable is a problem.
Having similar problem...
I'm having a similar problem. My laptop used to charge Touch Pro when i connect it. Now for reason i noticed that it doesn't anymore.
I could be wrong, but I thought I read in the manual that when the phone is synched to a PC, it only charges in trickle mode, so it doesn't recharge the battery efficiently. Is this the problem?
same problem here. Mine was working fine with ANY charger whether it be USB, car charger or wall charger. But now it will only charge with the htc plug but not the HTC wall charger. The plug is the one with the ports for tv-out, headphones.
I'm going to go try and do a hard reset.I dont understand what could cause this.

Usb fast charging

I can't understand why it is so slow to charge!
I tried also nuePower... but with no results.
The phone charge slow (in the same usb port where other htc phones charge quickly!)...
Do you have suggestions?
usb charging is just like that.. if you want it to charge faster, use the wall charger. although, from what i've heard, slow charging is better for the battery anyways.
yes but I usually use my tp as modem and happens that phone discharge quickly than what it charges!!! so after 3 hours phone is completely discharged!!!
This happens only with tp and not with touchHD neither with TytnII!
Incredible!
Although the voltage is the same on a PC USB port as on the wall charger, the amperage is much lower. Thus, the phone will charge significantly faster on the wall charger.
However...
I also use my TP as a modem, and I can leave it on the web indefinitely. If yours is running down, perhaps there's a different issue at play - if you don't have any power hungry apps running in the background you might just have a borked battery or USB port...

I tried just after hard reset without installing any application before.
I'm using Energy ROM and I'm quite sure ROM doesn't have any problem...
I do have the same problem with my Touch Diamond. When connected to my PC or even using my car charger, it will discharge completely after 2 or three hours of using, say, GPS and a few 3G connections to check traffic.
I can't use my Diamond as a modem for the same reason... I have flashed several roms and radios, nothing changed.
Double post
Check if the TP really charges! The unit switches off the charging mode when it gets too hot or better too warm. So e.g. when in use as a GPS in car typically mounted on the windshield, it gets too warm pretty easily as GPS is quite an energy hungry application and quick discharging also heats up the battery.
CU,
Cactus World
P.S. If you are using the TP in car and have aircon, then try to direct one of the cold air streams to the TP to keep it cool. That helps to prevent the switching off of charging mode.
Try tbattery
I use the Energy Rom and it has a utility called tbattery that can show you whether the phone is charging or not and at what rate. Would at least tell you what's happening in the phone. Also gives you the internal temperature of the phone. I've found anything higher than 41 degrees c causes the phone to go into a slower charge mode; it's possible that a higher temp could stop charging altogether - however it should still allow you to power the phone and not use the battery....
I can use phone as modem and still charge it via usb. maybe try a different rom?
I can do that, too ! The problem is the phone charges too slowly, so that the actual power consumption is higher than the charging...
I think that it depends on how you use your phone as an Internet source. I use wmwifirouter, and last time I plugged into ac, my batery still ran down. If your phone lasts 4 hours as a wifi router with no power and charging takes 5 hours, you are operating at a defecit.
I'm using 3G and Internet Connection Sharing through USB cable.
And my diamond charges completely in less than two hours using the wall charger.
Normal behavior, USB port doesn't have enough "juice" to charge it faster.
If you want a quick charge - use wall charger.
1) I can't use tethering through USB if I use the wall charger
2) I use tethering when i'm NOT near a wall power outlet, obviously
3) I don't want a "quick charge"... I just want the phone not to loose charge.
4) I have owned many WinMo devices and this is the first one that will not hold charge while connected to USB
Start -> Settings-> System tab -> Power
There will be a check box that says "When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC." Make sure it isn't checked.
That's the only thing I can think of right now. If I think of anything else, I'll post it.

Thanks for the hint, but it isn't checked.
I think it's just that the phone requires too much power
And it's getting very hot very fast, which will hinder proper charging, too.
I wonder if other modern HTC devices have the same overheating problem...

Can usb charging damage the baterry?

When i plug my samsung omnia to the usb port it starts charging automaticly. This can be turned off with a third party app but it is really a pain in the butt as it makes me change the registry every time.
Anyway, i read somewhere that nowadays batteries won't get damage if you start charging them even if they aren't fully drained. Something like "baterry memory effect is a thing from the past."
Is this true?
Thanks in advance!
No, USb charging is the best way to charge your phone according to sticky over in the Nexus One forum. It emits the least ammount of energy to your phone making it less damaging to the battery. Car charging is the worst due to such a fast and high volume transfer rate.
I would agree, usb charging is much better than using the mains and heaven forbid using a car charger.
The usb does not give out the full 5v and while this may be a problem for usb cd-dvd’s or usn hard drives it is an advantage to us as this has the effect of trickle charging the battery and if done correctly this will in time condition your battery.
Many years ago I had the old SPV E100 and this came with a desktop cradle and I used to leave my cradle at work and drop my phone in to the cradle and use the activesync remote control to respond to texts or ‘play’ with my phone.
The E100 would barley last a day on a full charge and the cradle could not charge directly and you had to plug the charger into the cradle to make it charge. Then posts started appearing stating that with a single wire you could make the cradle charge from usb and I quickly made this mod to my cradle and hey presto I was charging from usb while at work.
I did not realise at the time the benefits of usb charging but I used to put my phone on the cradle in the morning, take it out during lunch, plug it back after lunch and take off when I go home and I used to do this almost every day and after six months or so I noticed that I could take my phone off the cradle at 5:00pm on Friday and it would still be running by Sunday lunchtime and all through usb charging.
I think I was lucky as the battery would only last a day and if you did the same on a modern device with a battery that lasts say three or four days it may not work out the same. I now have the TG01 and you will see by the reviews it has a very low capacity battery and using the same kind of trick it seems to be doing the same, its early days but so far so good.
What about day to day random connecting the phone to the pc via usb?
What about day to day random connecting the phone to the pc via usb for any other purposes than charging? Like activesync?
I use to connect a few times a day for periods of 4 or 5 minutes and then disconnect, and i am afraid of batterry side effects.
Should i be worried?
Hi again, officially speaking it should not make any difference but I would avoid plugging in for such short periods of time.
If you have a newer HTC device you may be lucky enough to have an option in the power settings something like ‘disable charging while plugged into pc’ if you tick this box you can plug and unplug to your hearts content but you will not charge.
If you anticipate being plugged in for quite some time then disable this option (if you have it). The only other way to avoid this is to look on Ebay and you will find usb sync/charge leads but you will find some with two usb connectors. One for data only and one for power only so you can charge without syncing or sync without charging or plug both in and sync and charge.
Fortunately for me once its plugged in it tends to stay plugged in for the rest of the day.

Thanks you so much for replying back. I don't have that option you mentioned but i downloaded a app that turns off usb charge. But thats a pain to do because it makes me mess with the registry everytime i want to turn that option off.
I would use bluetooth but i can't make my phone sync with my pc with it. I even created a thread asking for help but i got no awnser back http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7257183#post7257183
I am a bit lost here. Anyways thank you for the help. At least now i know that it isn't that risky, although sometimes i need to connect my phone to the pc for text messaging or any other stuff that doesn't take more than 10 minutes.
Damn i would love to sync my phone with pc via bluetooth or wi-fi..
Noob here, not the OP, but thanks for this info. I had no idea car charging was a bad thing. Will make a habit of charging from the USB in the future.
Hi again, just read your other post and I remember when I got my Omnia I had to use bluetooth sync as it did not come with a cable.
I used this http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=3163 guide.
I know it says Windows XP but once I had my phone set and I plugged my bluetooth dongle into my work machine and set the comm port it worked and that was Windows 7 also.
On the downside syncing via usb will suck your battery pretty quickly (about the same as being on a call)

[Q] Broken Micro USB Port

Okay so my usb port has been a bit annoying the past week - where i had to vigorously wiggle the cable to get it to charge or to sync (and even when it did decide to connect to the computer, it would chop out eventually)
But now it's no longer charging or being recognized by my comp
It's strange because the headphone adapter was working fine, and so was the usb host, but it just wont charge anymore - I effectively now have a dead TG01
Currently, i'll get the orange light, telling me it's charging, but when i try to power on, nothing happens...
So i'm thinking a new USB port which is where I need some help: I'm not sure on what part to get
But maybe This is the one? Comparing the images with the ones found on the net of the TG01 (Yep - I still haven't got mine open yet)
But yeah, just a heads up on whether you think it would work would be epic, or whether you think i should just try a different battery/charger/throw it away (Although i'm almost certain it's the port, as it was working intermitently before - it's now gone altogether)
are u using only usb to charging or an wall charger?

Wall charger, but i tried USB, and still no luck
It just wont charge at all, regardless of the orange light when plugged in now that it's off (though i wouldn't get it when the phone did still have charge left and was therefore still switched on...)
BUMP: Any ideas you clever people? Just some guidance would be nice...
I'm still without my beloved TG01, I'm having to use a **** old Samsung G600
I do have some problems of my own with my USB cable. I believe the problems are due to the cable, though. The wall charger works fine. The USB cable that I use, has to stay somehow "forced"... imagine having the cell laying face up on a desk. The USB cable gets out and is forced by a small pen that stays right near the cellphone, to have a 30% slope upwards, so pushing a bit the cable onto the upper part of the USB port. I do know that you are telling us a different issue, however, maybe this way you could check whether it's just a broken connection and not a completely dead port.
No, this sounds like the exact issue i had...
It was like this with the Charger and USB - where i had to force it to be recognised or charged, and it would still cut out after a while - and wiggling it or knocking it wouldn't actually affect it, it would be of it's own accordance...
But it was strange because the headphone adapter worked fine...
Nothing happens at all now though
Are you try: Settings- Connections- USB to PC- unmark Enable advanced network functionality
I can't turn the phone on because it wont charge, so it's not that
Battery may be defective. Try with any 5V charger, connect directly to battery pin in 10 min
Hi
It vaguely remembers me of something I read on the forum about different micro usb (explaining my different cables do not connect just the same, some easy, some bit forced); I think there also was a drawing. (but I don't have time to search for the exact thread; it was not the "solving usb port mistery one))
Maybe your earphone adaptator don't have exactly the same as your charger? And if it is not battery trouble, find a charger with the "very right" micro usb plug?
Thank you both so much for your response:
I understand why you say it could be the battery problem with the charger - but it doesn't explain the intermittent connection with my computer when using the USB cable. Which is convincing myslef more and more that it's a port problem
One solution for now would be to buy one of these cheap external battery chargers from eBay, but it would mean i still wouldn't be able to use sync using the USB cable and i'm a bit conscious on whether the charger is safe and wont fry my battery
Which is why i'm leaning towards having a stab at reparing it myself
It'd solve the issue directly and it'd be a safer and more secure solution too... (the external charger would have to be ordered in from Hong Kong eBay)
I'm having what seem to be exactly the same problems. I have used 2 x usb based chargers on it - and neither work (whereas they had been working for the past 6 months). Got a mains charger last week - was working for a while - but as of right now, no longer works.
I'm not sure what else to do. I will try later to use the other adapter I have for connection to usb keyboard. The strange thing is - this will probably work but charging won't!
So....is it the micro usb port that's broken? (strange if it is but still works for data)
OR
could it be the battery?

[Q] Can't charge off PC USB?

My Photon Q won't charge off a PC USB port, or my laptop. Is this common? Thanks.
Are you using the usb cable that came with the phone? Reason I ask....I've discovered this phone is extremely picky about the cables you use. So far of the ones I have on hand, I can only consistently charge while in the car using my Belkin usb charging adapter with the Motorola cable that came with the phone. That includes a fairly nice ferrite core 6ft usb cable I got from Monoprice...which it works fine at home on AC, but in the car it stutters back and forth between charging and not charging.
Just today I used a cheap USB cable I bought off of ebay to charge my PQ using my laptop.
Its one of the ones sold as "HTC OEM USB Charger + cable" on ebay for like 3 bucks.
I also charge it at home using a green 3m cable from ebay, also bought for like 3 bucks lol.
Does it require that drivers be installed on the PC to get a charge? I've tried a few cables that I have laying around. I'll see if I can find other cables to try. The weird thing is if the phone is off, and plugged in, the LED lights up green, as if it's charging. But using the same cable, if the phone is on, it won't acknowledge that it is plugged in.

No, I wouldn't think so...
I've been able to charge off of many different USB cables on my Q. Not sure... Only thing it's been picky on so far is the wall wart - cable it hasn't seemed too picky about.
If its an old desktop with USB 1.1 it may not charge, and many laptops won't allow charging via USB if the laptop itself is not plugged into AC. Just a thought.

If its an old desktop with USB 1.1 it may not charge, and many laptops won't allow charging via USB if the laptop itself is not plugged into AC. Just a thought.

Very good point ^^^. I've heard some laptops, even when plugged in, still don't provide enough juice to charge (some) devices. Perhaps your laptop is one of these low-power USB port devices.
ive noticed that this phone is picky about what charger you use. i have a hard time charging on my pc as well. and certain micro usb's i have dont seem to charge it well either. needs to be the stock plug it came with.
I've basically given up at this point. Blackberry AC chargers work well for me, so I'll try and track down a few more of them. Otherwise, nothing is consistent. The desktop I've used has a plenty big enough power supply, and it charges my Epic with no problem. My personal laptop and work laptop both charged the Epic, but not the Photon Q. I guess I'll just have to carry around a charger instead of a MicroUSB cable when I'm on the road with my laptop.
Thanks, all.

All,
For what little it's worth, I just noticed that the words "Not Charging" come up on the lock screen whenever I connect to the USB port of my laptop or desktop. So the PQ knows it's plugged in; it just refuses to accept the charge.
Also, whenever the battery completely dies, the phone will start to charge. It will charge for a few minutes until it has enough battery to turn itself on. As soon as it turns on, it stops charging, and a minute later, shuts down because of the dead battery. Then it starts charging again. This basically gives me an endless loop of the phone charging, starting, discharging, and shutting back off. I can't even get it to stay off long enough to get a useful charge without turning on automatically.
Yeah, the only issue I've had with this phone at all is the extreme 'quirkiness' it has in regards to charging on anything other than the stock usb cord & power adapter it plugs into. Even using the Moto vehicle dock for the Q, its completely hit/miss on charging. It will *often* go into that 'Not Charging' state where its kind of keeping sort of a baseline/'stalemate' of the current charge level for me, not really going down but not charging back up either. Not really sure what's up with that. With my vehicle dock for the longest I kept thinking maybe my cig lighter port on my car is bad, but I don't have issues with my radar detector at all.
Had the same problem with the not charging a few days back. I was leaving the phone in Mass Storage mode because just getting it into Mass Storage was a headache originally.
Hooked it up to it's original cable and woke up with 65% battery. Switched from mass storage to charge only and it started charging.
Not sure if it was caused by being in Mass Storage and wouldn't charge but now I put in Charge Only before bed.
It always works (in my experience) with the original cable that comes with it regardless, its anything else where its quirky.

Isn't there a setting in ##3282# that enables and disables USB charging? Y'all have probably thought of this already. Anyways just thought if throw that out there. This is my first android that was not a low usage device. I know very little about it. I seriously think xda should make tee shirts that say "everything I have learned in life I learned from xda".
My phone was not charging in debugging mode yesterday.
