Help to find a kick a** phone - General Questions and Answers

Hi all.
I'm looking for an mobile phone with som realy nice specs but I don't know what I should chouse.
my requerements is
Gprs/Edge/3g for datatravel
GPS
WM6
500+Mhz processor
nothing fancy just a stable one with some kick ass performance.
I curently have an HTC Touch HD but there is some bugs and performance isues, so I would like some other type of phone.
I'm located in Denmark so ofcourse it should be availeble in dk
hope to get some helt from y'all

I guess either the Samsung Omnia or the Sony Xperia X1 would be two of your best choices. I personally don't own either one but have read great things about both of them! Hope this helps.

check pdadb.net which has all the latest device info, comparisons, specs, etc...

Personally, i wouldn't buy the Omnia nor the Xperia.. but maybe that's just me.
ETEN make very good pdas..
and through my own experience i very much liked the Touch Pro tho i've heard of some problems with it as well (the diamond sucks)..
you should remember that during the 2nd half of 2009 WM7 is supposed to arrive, and it might need new hardware thus.. different devices. I'm using a polaris right now and waiting for WM7 to come out to look for a decent device.
Personally, if i were you, i wouldn't put my money on something crazy right now before the crazy wm7 fiasco begins.. you can get a Polaris, which is a KICKASS phone.. if you're in a hurry to switch.

wait til mid 2009
if u can wait TEGRA

Thx for all the great reply's I can't wait for the WM7 and it dosnt matter because the application is only supported om wm6. I don't like som brand new devise because there is always somthing wrong with the rom, I like so wait and get a more stable release.
I need some soon because I have to test et with the software 15/01-2009, I have found a small mobile that looks interesting
"Opticon H19A Windows Mobile 6.0" http://www.opticonmobility.com/products/h19a
I like the idea with the Laser scanner so we have the oportunity to scan the barcodes instead of typing the numbers

Which new pocket PC should I buy ? (Help, please)

I currently own an O2 XDA IIi (HTC Alpine), I am quite satisfied with it but it has gotten a bit old, there is no OS upgrade, so I cannot enjoy many of the new apps which are made exclusively for WM5.0/6.0/6.1. I am wondering which device to buy. I thought about :
- getting an HTC Advantage
- getting an HTC Kaiser
- getting O2 XDA Flame (but WM 5.0!!!!)
- waiting for E-ten V900 or SE Xperia X1
I use my PPC as a phone (about 1-2 calls a day, 2-3 SMS a day), to play MP3 (about 1-2 hours a day), to play some games especially using FPSECE PSX emulator. I also use it as a "mini-PC".
The Advantage seems to be extremely powerful but I am afraid itmight be too big for me (I want to know how it compares to an XDAIIi with 2400 mAh battery thus making it thicker; I also want to know how the Kaiser compares to Nokia 6600 ).
HTC Kaiser also appears to be a good choice but I am not sure it will be powerful enough for me, especially with the driver problem.
I also thought of waiting for E-ten V900 or SE Xperia X1 (especially the latter), but I want a new PPC before July, and I am not sure when these devices will be released.
Another question : what about upgrading to Windows Mobile 7.0 in the future? Will it be possible ? Or is the question thoroughly irrelevant as the OS is still under development ?
Can you help choose my future device ? Thanks
have you looked into this? I see it on your list but is it at the top?

I hear what your saying. I've been getting very anxious to upgrade my current ppc and the X1 is what I want. I told my wife, if I upgrade to the Tilt now, she will inherit it when the X1 comes out. She also would also inherit my 8525 if I got the Tilt now. apparently I'm out of my gaourd.... Needless to say, thats a ton of money just to get what I want.
Good luck with your descision....
ROLL UP FOR THE MYSTERY TOUR - wat the **** is that -
the fone looks ace - but that advert is everything that is wrong with america!
before i got my advantage [im getting another one soon...] i went on pdadb, and got the measurements. then i drew the outlines on some paper, and compared them to my hermes. the best thing was, it was thinner, and really not that much bigger...
kinda made the final decision about getting it

last info i got on the release of x1 was september

Nice. I thought Sony Ericsson was a Japanese company. Or they make the product and America promotes it?
Go here and pick you own region and give us your thoughts then.

So, does it fit in your pocket ? (My XDA IIi fits but it's a bit thick ) Is the performance really good ? (much better than that of Kaiser, for instance ?)
it's pretty much the same hardware as kaiser so it all comes down to if
sonyE is also too cheap to pay qualcomm for their driver
Well, depends wht pocket. School trousers... no. skinny jeans obviously not. tracksuit bottoms, yep. Blazer pocket definitely.
So it depends on where you want it lol.
Its about double the speed of any of my other devices. But i guess thats because the other two both lacked something, the tytn lacked the ram, and my touch lacks the processor.
The advantage has it all. which is why im getting another one.
Rory
Definitely NOT xda Stealth
hmm
my next toy will def be the X1 from sony just look awsome . as far as the advantage man thats not much money for a phone might as well buy a laptop or a EEE PC from asus they rock. love my EEE

Suggest me a phone please?

Hi all
I looking for a UK mobile phone that does the following:
Wifi
GPS
Windows mobile
It must be as small as possible. Loading new firmware/software on is no problem. Secondhand or brand new. Open to options on the price.
What are your suggestions?
whats your budget? if you want a nice one, htc touch diamond is thin and small, probably the best if ur open on price. if you want a cheaper one, the kaiser might work although it is big. windows mobile phones generally arent small, especially the ones from htc. try looking to samsung, lg, and other companies, im not familiar so i cant provide much insight..
Samsun Omnia all the way!
I would say, forget about HTC and get yourself a SAMSUNG Omnia!
Latest HTC models, including Diamond, Kaiser, Touch Pro, Touch HD and many others have problem with GPS lag, bad or no video drivers, and many other irritating and annoying bugs!
Samsung Omnia has none of these problems!
ya thats what i would say. im dumping my diamond on ebay so if you want it, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=260336534297.
is there a huge user-based discussion board like the htc specifically for that device tho? thats what im worried about. flashing roms and other stuff wouldnt be the same without dedicated cookers.
my main question for anyone here is which one is better out of the 3: Samsung Omnia, Sony Xperia X1, or HTC Touch HD/Touch Pro?

Welcome
I would recommend you to look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446362
And you´ll see what XDA members think about the best device
My recommendation is an HTC definetly! as you will have the great support and knowledge of this great site
Once you check here: http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdachooser
According to your needs and $$ you´ll be able to decide
Good luck,
Thanks for the suggestions so far. Budget is an issue but I'd not like to restrict choice at the moment as I'd like to see what's out there that fits the bill first. Besides, mobile phone operators here often give the phones away or sell them cheaply to get your business so retail price is not always what you pay.
Any more suggestions?
if u dont have to have windows, u can try a blackberry, iphone (not recommended, overrated crap in my view), or the nokia high end ones that run symbian.

Omnia forum should serve you as a "Huge user-based discussion board", and yes there are dedicated cookers for the device
I used to have Touch pro and Touch Diamond and I can say that both of them are no match comparing to omnia, and what I can make out from reading the threads on the Touch HD forum, it has the same hardware as Touch pro, and it also has the same buggs! Meaning that it has GPS lag, crapy video performance, and probably some other things as well!
Omnia is just much more snappier, yes it has less ram, but really, comparing to the other devices it´s much quicker!
Oh and please, if you have the possibillity to test all devices for comparison please do that, don´t trust the performence tests that you can find on various sites, that is only numbers that looks good on paper, but in reality it really is not at all that good!
Just go and read in the Touch pro or Touch HD forum, search for posts about performance or GPS lag or video drivers, and you will understand what I mean!
Also there are several youtube videos showing the many issues these devices have!
Oh and I just have to mention that I have had about 10 different HTC devices so far over the years, and almost all of them has been just as crappy! The only HTC device that I still own, and that actually outperforms the new HTC devices that are sold today is the good old Universal!
Anyway, good luck with your decision and let us know if you have any more questions! Would be good to know what you decide in the end, and why you decided for that particular device! Hope to hear from you soon!
Speaking to my current provider O2, I can get either an XDA ignito or a Samsung Pixon, both on very good tariffs. Both have wifi, the Samsung seems to have a great camera (8MegaPixel) but it's the phone, GPS and WiFi I shall use the most.
Any comments to help me choose between these 2?
i am going to point out the obvious in case someone else stumbles over this thread, the Ignito is a re-badged Touch Diamond Personally i have no observations to make as i have been happy with my HTC devices so far.
Finances prevent me from looking into the latest and greatest, my Trinity does all i need of it. If i want a digital camera i have a pocket sized Fuji, and mobile music is catered for by an iPod Classic, 120Gb, so no shortage of music there.

HTC T-Mobile G1 or Sony Ericsson Xperia X1a

My mind has been stuck on this question for weeks. Im still getting the money to purchase one of the devices, i just cant decide which one. Ive even got the pdadb.net comparison sheet set as my home page. I cant decide for my self which one i should buy. I want the G1 because i really like android and from what ive seen at the T-Mobile stores, its a pretty solid phone. But the Xperia is a very loaded phone, and i want windows mobile because im so used to my applications, and im just very adjusted to it. But Android seems very innovative, i just think id like it. Im not exactly in love with windows mobile(but then again, who is?!?), i just dont want to get something totally different and not know how to use it. Honestly, im still using the device that started my love with mobile technology. My HP iPAQ hx2495b. Sometimes i feel like im being lied to, because even though TCPMP says the clock speed 520Mhz, it dosent feel that way AT ALL. Anyways, the whole point of this is to help me decide, HTC T-Mobile G1 or Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. Im looking for a straight answer. Thanks!
Simple answer. If you want win mobile, buy X1. It's easier to flash/change/modify/connect to pc, bigger app support and etc. If you want to experiment with new OS, buy G1. It's interesting, but in different way Or wait for new T-Mobile G2
I'd go for the xperia (in fact, thats what I got) simply because android still has a long way to go.
anyways, the xperia is ****ing fast. those hp hx2xxx are the ****. I got one also and is slow as hell... tried lots of roms, differente winmo versions (2003, 5.0, 6.0) and all are slow.
also, when applications start using the 3d chip support, they will be faster (core player next version)
G1 is still too "beta" imho. I would go with the X1. Good luck!
Agree G1 is too beta now
I´ll take the X1, but there are better options than this ones: HD for example

Yep!
09 can bring us some very nice surprises!
Perhaps HD Touch Pro......
Cheers,
Yhea, i was hoping that the Touch HD Pro would come around, but it might be WAY too expensive for me. If the Touch HD is 800$ then the Touch HD Pro will probly be into the thousands. Nothings really holding me back, other than funding issues.

would you buy

1 - htc diamond 2
2 - htc touch pro 2
3 - htc hero
4 - htc firestone
& why ?
Out of those options, I'd buy a TP2.
I would however *consider* the HTC Hero as it seems like an interesting handset.
tp2 because it's the latest & greatest.
btw, your 1st post...welcome to the great xda forum.
so, wich one do u like & why?
TP2!!
Because is a buisness oriented device, it has nice keyboard and I like the design.
I don't know yet - that's the reason for the Poll
I'm looking to buy a do it all phone that can be customized and playied with and thinking of waiting for the firestone but how long and how much ?
so maybe just buy something now and keep it for 2/3 years
wanted to get your expert opinion first
thanks.bye

nobody seems too excited about the firestone - 0 vote
it's that becouse not enouth innovation or becouse it's too early and the release date & price is still a unknown ?
TD2 4 TEH WIN!!!
Reason= I have one
Diamond 2 or Hero, they look just great and have great specs...
yes TD2 looks really good and would probably be my choice right now but I was wondering if the TP2 was worth the extra money, about €200 (and save them to buy the device that will come AFTER the firestone) from the price that I see or to wait for the firestone if the price is similar to TP2
ofcourse the hero looks very promising and being open could develop/improve faster than waiting for WM7
is the firestone that much better and worth waiting for it or a ROM upgrade could make the TD2 close the gap to the TP2/Firestone
tehhoe about the TD2 do youu have any problem with the dust getting inside the cover?

I would probably buy Toshiba TG01 , But Since Im not in a Hurry Ill wait for HTC Superstar!!!!
BUT I DONT HAVE THE $$$$$$ FOR NONE!!!
Touch Pro2,
The keyboard has everything you need, especially the rare ctrl key.
Got a TG01 two weeks ago. Quite beta OS but a beautiful device!
TD2 or Hero, although the former is more realistic due to US carrier subsidization. I so want a TP2, but I just can't justify the extra hundred or so for the same lackluster internals. Plus I have smaller hands, and the TD2/Hero would probably be easier to navigate single-handed.
thanks
thanks to all who voted or give their opinion but my new toy will have to wait as I had to help a friend in need
well maybe the successor of the firestone will be something worth waiting for
Hero for me!
for me its a tie between tp2 and hero. but hero it is! all the while i thought the hero and the firestone are one and the same gadget. lol!
Of course TP2 ! Great abilitys , 5-row keyboard ...
The best and newest ! (well the toshiba tg01 is even not bad)
not too much enthusiasm for the firestone I see, shouldn't it be better than the TP2 ? better camera and new UI ok no keyboard but with a bigger screen should be ok the soft keyboard too or I'm missing something?

Which Phone should i get?

Yea i know there are alot of these threads so heres another.
My current phone the G1 is starting to break down so im looking for a new phone. I'm considering the Touch Pro2, Touch HD, Hero, and the Toshiba TG01. I have never used a windows mobile device before with the G1 being my first by HTC. I'm willing to try it as long as it has been prettied up some(TouchFlo or Stripes).
If you have either the Touch Pro2 or the Touch HD can you give me your experiences with them.
HTC in my experience is awefull build quality. After owning four diferent models I have vowed never to own one again. Shame really, apart from the poor camera selection they are designed really well ..... just a shame they fall to bits.
Out of your list, would have to be TG01.
Have you looked at the new Omnia II's? (not the Omnia HD) Theres a full on Iphone/HD lookie-likely and two keyboard models, one a TP2 type and one a blackberry type.
Don't forget the Acer M900 (which is what I currently use) and the more pocket friendly F900.
Touch Pro 2 definetly
Because keyboard is a must for me!

I had windows mobile and even though preference is a matter of perspective.... windows might be a step in the wrong direction. Back when I had it windows was ahead of its time... but now it seems like its standing still ... like its been stagnant for the last 3 yrs I haven't seen any major differences...from android to winmo is going Back to resistive touch screens... with not so finger friendly gestures because the screens tend to not pick up on the motion... I would really love to see MS step it up and release a new os or 7.0 which I hope makes a major difference. Dont get me wrong for business i would only use winmo or BB... but at this point Android just seems like a wiser choice... its not an ancient OS that will probably bore you quickly. All the phones sound great ... if you want break down and comparisons then go to infosyncworld.com ... they rate the phones for you.
As somebody who's an advocate of Windows Mobile, my honest opinion is that now isn't a good time to buy a WinMo phone at all, especially not for the first time. The only people I would recommend the current batch of WM phones to are people who already use WM, don't want to learn a different system, and REALLY need a new device.
Here's why: Windows Mobile 6 has a real learning curve, and coming from Android you're probably going to find yourself frustrated at a lot of the inconsistencies and complications. Further, WM7 is already on the horizon and I think we'll be getting our first real peeks at it before the year is out. It should be a massive, fundamental overhaul to the way WM works. There's a lot of unanswered questions right now, ESPECIALLY whether WM7 apps will work on WM6 devices and whether it will be possible to upgrade any current WM6 or 6.5 devices to 7. If not, it's possible that application support for WM6 devices might grind to a halt within a year.
If I were in your boots, I'd try to hold on to that G1 as long as you can. By October or November, I think we'll have a better view of the future of WM and it'll be easier to see whether WM will serve your needs going forward.
Now, all this is completely moot if you're rolling in enough dough to just buy a new phone whenever you feel like it. If so, feel free to buy whatever you like.
Wouldn't all of these phones be able to upgrade to winmo 7 anyway. I really dont care about having to learn how to use windows mobile. Im more interested in the devices themself. My main concern is switching to a device with out a keyboard.

Well, that's the problem: we just don't know yet. A lot of people here seem to take it for granted that WM7 will be as "open" as WM6 in terms of porting and the like, but comments from MS make me a lot less confident -- it sounds like WM7 might have much more specific hardware requirements that will keep it from being run on older models. It's POSSIBLE WM7 will be able to be put on, say, a Touch Pro 2, but it's not a foregone conclusion.
All signs point to WM7 being a major upgrade (keep in mind that WM7 has been in development since 6.1 dropped if not longer), and I think it's going to be really disappointing to be stuck with 6.5 once 7 hits.
But if you're looking to roll the dice, the Touch Pro 2 looks like a great phone UNLESS you want to use it as a media player. Lack of a 3.5mm jack is a serious weakness there.
yea the 3.5mm jack is a necessity b/c i planned on getting the Motorola S9s or something along that line to use because all of those except the hero are huge or heavy
I personally don’t believe that WM7 will be ready early 2010. It might take until 2011 that we see any WM7device.
TP2 seams currently best HTC choice if you need keyboard. However frankly speaking after having 2 HTC devices (Hermes and Kaiser) with slide keyboards I am not very confident about the durability (quality) of HTC hardware. Both of the devices had after short time issues with the rails and tilt mechanism.
Just recently I went to a shop to have look on the TP2 and the keyboard rails and the tilt seams same crap as previous devices. You can also read many complain in the TP2 section about screen wobbling. Touch HD has a very nice large screen (love large screens) but it is 1 year old technology and performance wise it did not satisfied many people. Furthermore as you are from USA you would need Australian version to able to use in American 3G. But the Device cost still after 1 year some 800-900$
My personal favoured are currently the Samsung Omnia II/i800 and Samsung Omnia II pro (b7610) Specs on the paper and the current reviews are indicating that those are under best devices on the market. Furthermore Samsung has almost entirely covered with additional software the aged WinMo operation platform. Further positive point is the Price. Both Samsung devices are about 100-200 USD cheaper then HTC devices even though they have better CPU; Camera etc.
I agree with Bulldog -- the Omnia II devices look really excellent. I like the design of the TP2 better, but I trust Samsung's build quality more and, feature-wise, it's fantastic.
Yes but you have to add that with omnia or any other you´ll not have the support of this great site!
That for me is an added value to consider before buying

Yes you do. This site offers Winmob o/s and Winmob App support to all. If you want cooked roms, look no further than omnia.modaco.com where there are plenty! My Omnia (original one) is currently running a great cooked rom of WM 6.5
Lets also not forget the AMOLED screen either on the new Omnias. I really regret buying my Acer M900, not because its crap - its not - but the new Samsungs look simply stunning. And if you factor in the success of the Omnia, widely regarded as the best Winmob all-rounder, the new Omnias should be spanking!
