HTC T-Mobile G1 or Sony Ericsson Xperia X1a - General Questions and Answers

My mind has been stuck on this question for weeks. Im still getting the money to purchase one of the devices, i just cant decide which one. Ive even got the pdadb.net comparison sheet set as my home page. I cant decide for my self which one i should buy. I want the G1 because i really like android and from what ive seen at the T-Mobile stores, its a pretty solid phone. But the Xperia is a very loaded phone, and i want windows mobile because im so used to my applications, and im just very adjusted to it. But Android seems very innovative, i just think id like it. Im not exactly in love with windows mobile(but then again, who is?!?), i just dont want to get something totally different and not know how to use it. Honestly, im still using the device that started my love with mobile technology. My HP iPAQ hx2495b. Sometimes i feel like im being lied to, because even though TCPMP says the clock speed 520Mhz, it dosent feel that way AT ALL. Anyways, the whole point of this is to help me decide, HTC T-Mobile G1 or Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. Im looking for a straight answer. Thanks!

Simple answer. If you want win mobile, buy X1. It's easier to flash/change/modify/connect to pc, bigger app support and etc. If you want to experiment with new OS, buy G1. It's interesting, but in different way Or wait for new T-Mobile G2

I'd go for the xperia (in fact, thats what I got) simply because android still has a long way to go.
anyways, the xperia is ****ing fast. those hp hx2xxx are the ****. I got one also and is slow as hell... tried lots of roms, differente winmo versions (2003, 5.0, 6.0) and all are slow.
also, when applications start using the 3d chip support, they will be faster (core player next version)

G1 is still too "beta" imho. I would go with the X1. Good luck!

Agree G1 is too beta now
I´ll take the X1, but there are better options than this ones: HD for example

Yep!
09 can bring us some very nice surprises!
Perhaps HD Touch Pro......
Cheers,

Yhea, i was hoping that the Touch HD Pro would come around, but it might be WAY too expensive for me. If the Touch HD is 800$ then the Touch HD Pro will probly be into the thousands. Nothings really holding me back, other than funding issues.

Which new pocket PC should I buy ? (Help, please)

I currently own an O2 XDA IIi (HTC Alpine), I am quite satisfied with it but it has gotten a bit old, there is no OS upgrade, so I cannot enjoy many of the new apps which are made exclusively for WM5.0/6.0/6.1. I am wondering which device to buy. I thought about :
- getting an HTC Advantage
- getting an HTC Kaiser
- getting O2 XDA Flame (but WM 5.0!!!!)
- waiting for E-ten V900 or SE Xperia X1
I use my PPC as a phone (about 1-2 calls a day, 2-3 SMS a day), to play MP3 (about 1-2 hours a day), to play some games especially using FPSECE PSX emulator. I also use it as a "mini-PC".
The Advantage seems to be extremely powerful but I am afraid itmight be too big for me (I want to know how it compares to an XDAIIi with 2400 mAh battery thus making it thicker; I also want to know how the Kaiser compares to Nokia 6600 ).
HTC Kaiser also appears to be a good choice but I am not sure it will be powerful enough for me, especially with the driver problem.
I also thought of waiting for E-ten V900 or SE Xperia X1 (especially the latter), but I want a new PPC before July, and I am not sure when these devices will be released.
Another question : what about upgrading to Windows Mobile 7.0 in the future? Will it be possible ? Or is the question thoroughly irrelevant as the OS is still under development ?
Can you help choose my future device ? Thanks
have you looked into this? I see it on your list but is it at the top?

I hear what your saying. I've been getting very anxious to upgrade my current ppc and the X1 is what I want. I told my wife, if I upgrade to the Tilt now, she will inherit it when the X1 comes out. She also would also inherit my 8525 if I got the Tilt now. apparently I'm out of my gaourd.... Needless to say, thats a ton of money just to get what I want.
Good luck with your descision....
ROLL UP FOR THE MYSTERY TOUR - wat the **** is that -
the fone looks ace - but that advert is everything that is wrong with america!
before i got my advantage [im getting another one soon...] i went on pdadb, and got the measurements. then i drew the outlines on some paper, and compared them to my hermes. the best thing was, it was thinner, and really not that much bigger...
kinda made the final decision about getting it

Nice. I thought Sony Ericsson was a Japanese company. Or they make the product and America promotes it?
Go here and pick you own region and give us your thoughts then.

So, does it fit in your pocket ? (My XDA IIi fits but it's a bit thick ) Is the performance really good ? (much better than that of Kaiser, for instance ?)
it's pretty much the same hardware as kaiser so it all comes down to if
sonyE is also too cheap to pay qualcomm for their driver
Well, depends wht pocket. School trousers... no. skinny jeans obviously not. tracksuit bottoms, yep. Blazer pocket definitely.
So it depends on where you want it lol.
Its about double the speed of any of my other devices. But i guess thats because the other two both lacked something, the tytn lacked the ram, and my touch lacks the processor.
The advantage has it all. which is why im getting another one.
Rory
Definitely NOT xda Stealth
hmm
my next toy will def be the X1 from sony just look awsome . as far as the advantage man thats not much money for a phone might as well buy a laptop or a EEE PC from asus they rock. love my EEE

What phone should I get to replace my Tilt?

I just received a huge bonus at work and the touch screen on my Tilt has seen better days. What phone should I get to replace it? Here's the qualifications:
1. Not an iPhone.
2. Not an Android phone.
3. I use my phone as a PDA FAR more than I actually spend talking on it.
4. I do not use my phone for watching video.
5. I like having a lot of apps available.
6. I am on AT&T and I'm not interested in buying an unlocked phone, though I imagine whatever phone it is, I'm sure I can unlock it through this site.
7. I want something better than QVGA.
8. In your suggestions, imagine that money is no object.
What do you suggest? Thanks.

I would suggest
1.- Buy an HD
2.- Wait a few months till 09 HTC great models arrive
3.- Read here: http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdachooser
Good luck,
dont be a idiot get the Iphone it has all the Latest Cracked Apps and 100's of 3rd party hadware, and a unix shell /bin/sh , there is probably more apps than winmobile & palm & blackberry combine, and clone your sim so u can still use both your modded tilt

I've been looking at the HTC Touch HD, but I think I may just hold off to see what's coming out soon. My Tilt should hold up even though the touchscreen is started to not respond.

I have an iPod touch, so I have the positives of an iPhone and I use my Tilt as a wifi router. Best of both worlds.
I think I should word this differently. What would YOU get?

interesting, how do u clone a sim card?
op, at least wait for the WM world conference announcements in February...
xperia looks like a good choice. but i would wait a little bit for the new generation of devices they should be much faster than current qualcomm 7200a devices(diamond, touchpto, new touchcrouise,hd and xperia). just look at the crazy performance of new Asus phones to see what i mean http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475616
also samsung are adding a keybord to the omnia and are upgrading their nice i780
waiting seems like a smart thing to do (unless you can get a really really cheap price on the x1 or the hd)
As of today, jan 30th 2009, SONY XPERIA X1 is the king of the hill
You should hold one on your hand to feel the metalic case and stare at the beautiful and crisp Sony WVGA screen.
Not that thick and has plenty of memory onboard (I have loaded tons of apps and still have > 120 MB free mem)
But most of all: it has a REAL audio jack, microSD slot, and full arc-sliding keyboard
After you have it, no more doubt...
I would WAIT !!!
In a few months, we will see more models. It is not like your Tilt is dead now. Just hang in there. That's what I would do. Actrually I am doing it now.
Thank you all for your suggestions. If I get impatient, I think I will go Xperia. Get the full experience of the new PointUI.
I'm in the same boat, I really want to replace my XDA Stellar as the mini USb is really flaky, but the X1 doesn't have an accelerometer, but the Touch Pro does. All in all though, neither offers much more than the Kaiser does.
Lets hope the next gen kit is really fast and had battery life you can measure in days rather than hours...
Seriously, you could get the fuze, but I would wait till the 09 series comes my friend.

HTC Kaiser or SE Xperia X1

Hello,
I'm in a bit trouble
I used Xperia since December 2008. But I am not satisfied with my phone. Don't really know why, but there aren't interesting things what I could do with my phone. It's still booring.
Now I want to sell it. Before X1 appeared on market I was interested in HTC Kaiser.
Have someone used both phones? Which is better?
I thought, I sell my X1 and buy me a HTC Kaiser.

Better is hard to answer as will depend on each person personal tastes.
I was an owner of a Kaiser and it was a great device, Xperia just used a cuple of times from a friend and I can say I´ll keep the Kaiser.
But why not to wait a few months and get the Touch Pro 2?
Just my opinion
Good luck,
if you're looking for something on the same general level of the kaiser (since the xperia has more memory, a larger screen and better resolution), you can just get a polaris. i have one and it's a wonderful device.
if you want to upgrade.. i'd go with orb and wait for either the touch pro 2 (if you need a hardware keyboard) or a diamond 2..

Shindude,
Is a physical keyboard important?
If it's not, I suggest going for the Touch HD or Touch Diamond 2 (if screen size is not important). Otherwise, go for the Touch PRO 2 for the keyboard.
Cheers.
No a physical keyboard is not required but how about the iphone what do you suggest? I really like what you can do with it but does HTC have that kind of customization?
TC,
I would never suggest the iPhone. And yes, WinMo has endless amounts of customization to suit your needs. The only catch? You got to do it yourself cause no one is going to do it for you. You can load up custom ROMs and everything, but at the end of the day, it is up to you to tailor how you want your WinMo to look and feel.
If you feel like you are not up to the amount of work needed to fine-tune WinMo devices, only then would I say get the iPhone.
Cheers.
^the X1 Xperia is a Windows Mobile 6.1 device, so he should already be familiar with it.
I recommend the Diamond2 or Touch Pro 2 (keyboard), then you still also have xda support!

Galaxys,
That's true. But he may not have known that he could flash new ROMs and customize the phone to a point of lunacy.
Cheers.
Cool...Yes, flashing is always the best fun here on xda!
I would recommend:
Touch Pro 2 if you need a buissness oriented device
Diamond 2 or Tosh TGO if you want a multimedia oriented device
No points for iphoney...
And if it´s not an HTC it will not have the great support form this great site!
you can "jailbreak" an Iphone however, it keeps getting hastled by Apple- its a chicken and egg situation. If you want to be able to do everything you are allowed to do properly on an Iphone then you shouldn't jailbreak it. What it does then, it does very well - but its limited. Jailbreaking means it can do a lot more, nearly as much as as WinMob device but its gets risky using online stuff as Apple try to restrict jailbroken phones.
Its kind of like the old Xbox, you could hack it but MS would discover ways to detect it and try to disable your online ability, the hackers would then get round that fix, and then MS get around that hack .... rinse, repeat.
I wont recommend a particular WinMob device as you dont seem to have decided. You need to decide, easy to use, simple, glossy Iponey or techno savvy Winmob device. Ask yourself, what did you use on the X1? Does an Iponey have that? What do you think you need that you didn't have? Do you think a Winmob or Iphone would cover that extra ability?

Getting new phone. Need help choosing.

So I've been a smartphone person for a while and the last good phone I had was the Nokia N91 which broke. I've been using a crappy Samsung slider to make/take calls and send/receive messages.
I'm getting a new phone and have narrowed down my choices to 2.
HTC HD2 (Leo) or the HTC Hero.
Now, I love the HTC Hero but the only thing keeping me is what I've heard about it being very laggy (and ive seen some videos, opening the mail takes at least 5-10 seconds). I have used the Android OS several times at the store and really love it (recently tried the HTC Droid Eric by Verizon).
I have also used Windows Mobile and find it okay, but seem to like Android better. Also, HTC Hero will NOT get 3G in the US...
I'm looking at the HD2 because it packs a lot of horsepower... 1Ghz is pretty dang nice, and from the videos I've seen lag does not exist AT ALL.
So now I have this dilemma... should I buy the HD2 or Hero. I guess it comes down to whether or not WinMo is better than Android (FOR ME. Please don't start a android vs winmo flame war).
What do you guys think?
P.S. I need to buy an unlocked GSM. No other options. Will probably get it from Middle East/Europe. Availability in a certain region is not an issue for me.
Welcome to HTC XDA! We highly recommend HTC HD2 top of the line PPC!! See the LEO section for the specs, answers & info...
I am personally waiting for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 which runs android, a very high resolution, and the snapdragon processor, in my opinion it is superior to the hd2 and the hero
Thanks galaxys for the warm welcome.
I'm not sure what you mean by PPC, but why exactly is it that you recommend it? The superior hardware?
and thanks jad for the response... I have considered the X10 and think its pretty cool but I'm not willing to wait and need a new phone NOW
PPC means Pocket PC. Anything that runs Windows Mobile is a pocket PC. It's not a term you see much nowadays.
The HD2 is probably the best PPC/WM device out there at the moment. As far as I'm aware (others please correct me if I'm wrong) the Eris is the Hero in another casing spcifically for Verizon. If only the Leo ran Android....
Ah okay thanks TheBrit
Yes you are correct about the Eris. Just different case.
Also, I've really fallen in love with android... so I guess I'll go for the Hero.
There's also the Samsung Moment that runs Android and has a physical keyboard.
