Hi all
I looking for a UK mobile phone that does the following:
Wifi
GPS
Windows mobile
It must be as small as possible. Loading new firmware/software on is no problem. Secondhand or brand new. Open to options on the price.
What are your suggestions?
whats your budget? if you want a nice one, htc touch diamond is thin and small, probably the best if ur open on price. if you want a cheaper one, the kaiser might work although it is big. windows mobile phones generally arent small, especially the ones from htc. try looking to samsung, lg, and other companies, im not familiar so i cant provide much insight..
Samsun Omnia all the way!
I would say, forget about HTC and get yourself a SAMSUNG Omnia!
Latest HTC models, including Diamond, Kaiser, Touch Pro, Touch HD and many others have problem with GPS lag, bad or no video drivers, and many other irritating and annoying bugs!
Samsung Omnia has none of these problems!
ya thats what i would say. im dumping my diamond on ebay so if you want it, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=260336534297.
is there a huge user-based discussion board like the htc specifically for that device tho? thats what im worried about. flashing roms and other stuff wouldnt be the same without dedicated cookers.
my main question for anyone here is which one is better out of the 3: Samsung Omnia, Sony Xperia X1, or HTC Touch HD/Touch Pro?

Welcome
I would recommend you to look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446362
And you´ll see what XDA members think about the best device
My recommendation is an HTC definetly! as you will have the great support and knowledge of this great site
Once you check here: http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdachooser
According to your needs and $$ you´ll be able to decide
Good luck,
Thanks for the suggestions so far. Budget is an issue but I'd not like to restrict choice at the moment as I'd like to see what's out there that fits the bill first. Besides, mobile phone operators here often give the phones away or sell them cheaply to get your business so retail price is not always what you pay.
Any more suggestions?
if u dont have to have windows, u can try a blackberry, iphone (not recommended, overrated crap in my view), or the nokia high end ones that run symbian.

Omnia forum should serve you as a "Huge user-based discussion board", and yes there are dedicated cookers for the device
I used to have Touch pro and Touch Diamond and I can say that both of them are no match comparing to omnia, and what I can make out from reading the threads on the Touch HD forum, it has the same hardware as Touch pro, and it also has the same buggs! Meaning that it has GPS lag, crapy video performance, and probably some other things as well!
Omnia is just much more snappier, yes it has less ram, but really, comparing to the other devices it´s much quicker!
Oh and please, if you have the possibillity to test all devices for comparison please do that, don´t trust the performence tests that you can find on various sites, that is only numbers that looks good on paper, but in reality it really is not at all that good!
Just go and read in the Touch pro or Touch HD forum, search for posts about performance or GPS lag or video drivers, and you will understand what I mean!
Also there are several youtube videos showing the many issues these devices have!
Oh and I just have to mention that I have had about 10 different HTC devices so far over the years, and almost all of them has been just as crappy! The only HTC device that I still own, and that actually outperforms the new HTC devices that are sold today is the good old Universal!
Anyway, good luck with your decision and let us know if you have any more questions! Would be good to know what you decide in the end, and why you decided for that particular device! Hope to hear from you soon!
Speaking to my current provider O2, I can get either an XDA ignito or a Samsung Pixon, both on very good tariffs. Both have wifi, the Samsung seems to have a great camera (8MegaPixel) but it's the phone, GPS and WiFi I shall use the most.
Any comments to help me choose between these 2?
i am going to point out the obvious in case someone else stumbles over this thread, the Ignito is a re-badged Touch Diamond Personally i have no observations to make as i have been happy with my HTC devices so far.
Finances prevent me from looking into the latest and greatest, my Trinity does all i need of it. If i want a digital camera i have a pocket sized Fuji, and mobile music is catered for by an iPod Classic, 120Gb, so no shortage of music there.

Yea i know there are alot of these threads so heres another.
My current phone the G1 is starting to break down so im looking for a new phone. I'm considering the Touch Pro2, Touch HD, Hero, and the Toshiba TG01. I have never used a windows mobile device before with the G1 being my first by HTC. I'm willing to try it as long as it has been prettied up some(TouchFlo or Stripes).
If you have either the Touch Pro2 or the Touch HD can you give me your experiences with them.
HTC in my experience is awefull build quality. After owning four diferent models I have vowed never to own one again. Shame really, apart from the poor camera selection they are designed really well ..... just a shame they fall to bits.
Out of your list, would have to be TG01.
Have you looked at the new Omnia II's? (not the Omnia HD) Theres a full on Iphone/HD lookie-likely and two keyboard models, one a TP2 type and one a blackberry type.
Don't forget the Acer M900 (which is what I currently use) and the more pocket friendly F900.
Touch Pro 2 definetly
Because keyboard is a must for me!

I had windows mobile and even though preference is a matter of perspective.... windows might be a step in the wrong direction. Back when I had it windows was ahead of its time... but now it seems like its standing still ... like its been stagnant for the last 3 yrs I haven't seen any major differences...from android to winmo is going Back to resistive touch screens... with not so finger friendly gestures because the screens tend to not pick up on the motion... I would really love to see MS step it up and release a new os or 7.0 which I hope makes a major difference. Dont get me wrong for business i would only use winmo or BB... but at this point Android just seems like a wiser choice... its not an ancient OS that will probably bore you quickly. All the phones sound great ... if you want break down and comparisons then go to infosyncworld.com ... they rate the phones for you.
As somebody who's an advocate of Windows Mobile, my honest opinion is that now isn't a good time to buy a WinMo phone at all, especially not for the first time. The only people I would recommend the current batch of WM phones to are people who already use WM, don't want to learn a different system, and REALLY need a new device.
Here's why: Windows Mobile 6 has a real learning curve, and coming from Android you're probably going to find yourself frustrated at a lot of the inconsistencies and complications. Further, WM7 is already on the horizon and I think we'll be getting our first real peeks at it before the year is out. It should be a massive, fundamental overhaul to the way WM works. There's a lot of unanswered questions right now, ESPECIALLY whether WM7 apps will work on WM6 devices and whether it will be possible to upgrade any current WM6 or 6.5 devices to 7. If not, it's possible that application support for WM6 devices might grind to a halt within a year.
If I were in your boots, I'd try to hold on to that G1 as long as you can. By October or November, I think we'll have a better view of the future of WM and it'll be easier to see whether WM will serve your needs going forward.
Now, all this is completely moot if you're rolling in enough dough to just buy a new phone whenever you feel like it. If so, feel free to buy whatever you like.
Wouldn't all of these phones be able to upgrade to winmo 7 anyway. I really dont care about having to learn how to use windows mobile. Im more interested in the devices themself. My main concern is switching to a device with out a keyboard.

Well, that's the problem: we just don't know yet. A lot of people here seem to take it for granted that WM7 will be as "open" as WM6 in terms of porting and the like, but comments from MS make me a lot less confident -- it sounds like WM7 might have much more specific hardware requirements that will keep it from being run on older models. It's POSSIBLE WM7 will be able to be put on, say, a Touch Pro 2, but it's not a foregone conclusion.
All signs point to WM7 being a major upgrade (keep in mind that WM7 has been in development since 6.1 dropped if not longer), and I think it's going to be really disappointing to be stuck with 6.5 once 7 hits.
But if you're looking to roll the dice, the Touch Pro 2 looks like a great phone UNLESS you want to use it as a media player. Lack of a 3.5mm jack is a serious weakness there.
yea the 3.5mm jack is a necessity b/c i planned on getting the Motorola S9s or something along that line to use because all of those except the hero are huge or heavy
I personally don’t believe that WM7 will be ready early 2010. It might take until 2011 that we see any WM7device.
TP2 seams currently best HTC choice if you need keyboard. However frankly speaking after having 2 HTC devices (Hermes and Kaiser) with slide keyboards I am not very confident about the durability (quality) of HTC hardware. Both of the devices had after short time issues with the rails and tilt mechanism.
Just recently I went to a shop to have look on the TP2 and the keyboard rails and the tilt seams same crap as previous devices. You can also read many complain in the TP2 section about screen wobbling. Touch HD has a very nice large screen (love large screens) but it is 1 year old technology and performance wise it did not satisfied many people. Furthermore as you are from USA you would need Australian version to able to use in American 3G. But the Device cost still after 1 year some 800-900$
My personal favoured are currently the Samsung Omnia II/i800 and Samsung Omnia II pro (b7610) Specs on the paper and the current reviews are indicating that those are under best devices on the market. Furthermore Samsung has almost entirely covered with additional software the aged WinMo operation platform. Further positive point is the Price. Both Samsung devices are about 100-200 USD cheaper then HTC devices even though they have better CPU; Camera etc.
I agree with Bulldog -- the Omnia II devices look really excellent. I like the design of the TP2 better, but I trust Samsung's build quality more and, feature-wise, it's fantastic.
Yes but you have to add that with omnia or any other you´ll not have the support of this great site!
That for me is an added value to consider before buying

Yes you do. This site offers Winmob o/s and Winmob App support to all. If you want cooked roms, look no further than omnia.modaco.com where there are plenty! My Omnia (original one) is currently running a great cooked rom of WM 6.5
Lets also not forget the AMOLED screen either on the new Omnias. I really regret buying my Acer M900, not because its crap - its not - but the new Samsungs look simply stunning. And if you factor in the success of the Omnia, widely regarded as the best Winmob all-rounder, the new Omnias should be spanking!
First off, just want to say hi to everyone. I've been browsing the forums recently and finally registered. Hope to stay for a while!
Anyways, I'm trying to decide between which smartphone to get. The HTC Diamond, Xperia X1 or the iPhone. The only reason why the iPhone is not a winner in my books is due mainly to its appearance. I love small sleek phones and the iPhone is far from it (in my opinion) but its functionality is hard to ignore.
I'm in Canada with Rogers so the HTC Hero was out of reach for me (I've had some bad experiences with Telus) so its basically down to these 3. I've talked to a Rogers salesmen who really bashed the Windows Mobile; claiming that its quite slow, especially the Diamond. Claims that its quite sluggish and just not worth it. I'm not at all familiar with the ROM scene and all that but willing to learn. Are there ways to enhance the devices running WM? Any sort of opinion on any of these phones would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome to HTC XDA! None of the above...Of course we recommend HTC HD2 top of the line PPC!! See the LEO section for the specs & info...
SE Xperia 10
I´ll choose Xperia because it´s keyboard so my vote goes for it
But there are much better HTC devices like Touch Pro 2 (the best hardware keyboard device) or Leo (the best no hardware kb device)
Thank you for the welcome.
As much as I'd like to try out the Leo, X10 or Touch Pro 2, availability is an issue. I'd like a phone pretty much now and as I only want to buy under local retail, my options are significantly hindered.
So, lets pretend all your lives depends on picking one of the 3 phones listed?
Ok, so I've tried all three of them and I own a X1 (and a touch HD).
I would say get X1 over Diamond, reasons:
X1 has hardware keyboard
X1 has higher resolution screen
Both are very customizable thanks to custom ROMs etc from XDA.
With the iPhone, everything just works out of the box.
Nice big capacitive touch screen, finger friendly.
Loads of apps in the app store (for almost every need, like find the nearest ATM, play the flute, etc etc.)
The downside is that it isn't so customizable unless you jailbreak it.
IF you jailbreak it, a whole new world appears, (no warez talk here, but) you can get your hands on everything the "illegal" way (games, apps, etc), but also making your phone less secure (thanks to the jailbreak).
Obviously pirated stuff are also avaliable for PPCs.
So I would say it's between the X1 and the iPhone.
Where as the iPhone seems to be for the younger audience and the X1 feels more "business".

Personally, if you don't have a place like xda to help enjoy your phone then it's not worth getting another phone that you can not customize above and beyond the typical parameters. I don't know too much about LG or Toshiba's support sites out there but I often stick with HTC because xda.
It's not just about the phones specs but the people behind the phones that matter more. XDA is that community that keeps me close to HTC.
Do research using the various website like GSM Arena to figure out the best phone....but don't stop there. Find out the support Groups that are willing to carry you and your device to it's furthest limits.
Hope this helps.....
Well said band27! Definately check the HTC devices & hang out on XDA!

Hi there
I have a LG IQ (Canadian eXpo). I have never had a HD or a tg01 so I cant compare them directly but I can comment on the eXpo.
I very much like my eXpo, but as other posters have said, the big thing you lose going to another manufacturer is this communities support, although several on this forum have stated that they will work on ROM development when it becomes possible. There is a fledgling web site www.lg-expo.com and a special interest group here, where discussions about development can take place.
things I love about the eXpo:
The keyboard - as good feel as the Touch Pro 2, but with a few less keys
The screen - colorful and bright but I havent used a HD
The SPEED of the processor -1 GHz and you know it when browsing or booting your device. You also know it when using processor intensive apps - doing things like browsing a large music collection.
the camera - 5 Mpixel, flash and it works quite well for a phone camera.
I am looking forward to the coming availability of the projector attachment.
the hardware multi-tasking button, and LG task manager works better than anything else I have seen on WM
the fingerprint reader - yes this works for security - and it works fast so I actually use it, which wasn't the case with the password systems and in my situation I really should use security of some type.
After TF3D or Sence, the S Class user interface is different and needs some getting used to! I have grown to like it but it was a rocky road the first week.
The bad...It has no internal stylus, so you have to use your finger nail sometimes. With 6.5 I find I can live with this since I don't end up wanting to use a stylus too much.
good luck and cheers,
Stay with HTC!
Go for Leo or Rhodium
So far the best 2 devices to this date

Hi Guys.
I need help in buying a new phone. I am using a Hyundai A 200 with winmo 5 and i have'nt had any problems with it except for its massive size and low battery life. I wanna go for a new smartphone so after a long research and review reading decided to go either with HTC, Samsung and Motorola. The devices i was satisfied with were HTC HD2, Samsung I8000 OMNIA 2 and Motorola Milestone (DROID).
Price wise HTC HD2 - 28k, Samsung Omnia 2 - 28k and Moto Milestone - 27.5k [Am from India].
A few days ago i visited a mobile shop for a hands on approach to clear my doubts and finally decide. I Liked all the three devices but obviously sided with the HTC HD2. Things that actually blowed my brains were the sheer screen size, responsiveness, capacitive touch screen, 1Ghz Processor & SENSE... Though the Touchwiz interface of Samsung and Android Of Moto were Good but HTC Hd2 was just awesome. It was when i came home and started reading reviews of HD2 in-depth that i realized its camera had a pinkish hue, the device hung up (getting up from sleep mode) etc, that was disappointing.
I dont wanna spend 34k and end up with a laggy phone. I also read that the codec support in OMNIA 2 was way better than in HTC HD2 (not and issue cos I can always convert it to suppored formats ). The guy from the mobile shop told me android sucked esp since file transfers over bluetooth were'nt possible (but later i read that rooting made that possible), and my friends told me that Applications couldn be installed on the SD card in android but i read in the forums yesterday that an app "app2sd" or something similar made this possible. I am open to both Win Mo and Android.
So now am really confused I want to know if the HTC HD2 has these flaws and if custom ROM's covered these flaws? Should I go for HTC or SAMSUNG or MOTO? Which one is really worth the money?
Am gonna use the device for reading e-books & lotsa documents (esp Word and excel files), listen to music and watch a few videos, Gaming (occasionally), as a portable camera and video recorder (shots are gonna be indoors mostly so if someone could give me the results of indoor shots it would be really appreciable) and calls, texts and mails, of course!
I also noticed the poll results for the Best HTC device of 2009 and HTC HD2 bags 46.90%
Everything is pointing toward HTC HD2, so if I get a positive outlook for owners i would go ahead with it or i have to look into the alternatives. so, Please do update me with your suggestions and views.
Also do let me know if I should consider some other device or wait for another few months if any better device is in the making
Thank you in advance.
Send me 20k U.S. and I'll hook you up with any phone you want, ha ha.
Nah, just messin.
Anyways, go with Android, man. I would be so pissed moving from Android to winmo. I like my apps too damn much. I think I'm breaking down and getting a nexus one. Even after I swore I'd never get anything without a physical keyboard again. =[
If you gonna be using Word and excel files alot then you probably want windows mobile...go with the hd2 and its suppose to be getting windows phone 7, which is suppose to be alot better than WM or thats what i hear...
Go for Leo definitely!
Thank You
Thank you so much for your suggestions and prompt replies guys....
Still i read that HD2 in plagued with software lags, Hang ups, and other random issues.... any solutions for these issues??? are they hardware related or software related??? what about the pink hue bug in the photos???

Android's still got a lota snags right or thats what i understood after reading a lot of posts in this forum. Its Open source so we can expect nothing but the best and comparing it to the i phone or winmo doesnt do it any justice... Which is the better phone for the Android platform??? I was thinking of Se Xperia X10 or HTC Legend..... But after going through XperiaX10's wishlist i have second thoughts....
The Nexus is an awesome android device...and I don't have any snags that can't be tweeked
wow all the prices are very high.. you say HD2 cost still 34K which is circa 5900HKD here in Hong Kong the HD2 goes for 24.5K (4200HKD)
Anyhow as previously some mentioned if you need to sync with your PC and with Microsoft outlook for your PIM WM is the best.
Until now I can’t really see the advantages of Android over WM and especially Motorola which has not much devices on the market therefore it will be difficult to get support even here.
For my opinion it comes down to HD2 or Samsung. Between them I would choose HD2. However again for my opinion paying 34K for device that will not get an official upgrade is far too high.. I hope you guys going to not kill me but what is the price for Iphone???

I got a cofirmation mail from my phone retailer that the price is actually 28 k and not 36 k as mentioned in their site....
Moto is out of my mind too... HTC legend and se Xperia x10 were taken up in favor of android but still HD2 kicks butt when it comes to screen size....
Iphone 3GS 32 GB is 39 k here....
Pink Hue camera issue...
i read in a lot of forums that the hdt hd2 is plagued by a pink hue in the pictures taken with its camera and few say that its a hardware issue and others say its a software issue any ideas on this???? in the support page of HTC this update [Update for HTC HD2 – Digital Picture Enhancement
This update for HTC HD2 ensures every picture is captured in the clearest digital quality. The HTC HD2 and its twin LED flash will take beautiful pictures so you can cherish your memories forever] is available is this for the correction of pink hue????
Hi, new to HTC phones, been an apple fanboy, but now I'm trying out different phones. I've been eyeing this one, HTC Fuze of late, cause mainly, I don't have a data plan and don't plan on too either. I want to know what owners think about this phone, and I can decide from there.
I mean many youtube comments of reviews over this phone been on both sides, and I mean the phone has been discontinued and people say from all the bugs and problems.
Sway me people on the XDA forums! Are you happy with the choice of this phone and recommend it? Or pull me out of its death trap.
Please comment cause it would really help. Thank you.
Fuze is a pretty good cell phone. It's vga lcd is impressing!!!
I use mine daily for work & leisure with a TAEL ROM, works fine for me I like it.
If you can live without a keyboard it may be worth looking at the Diamond 2.
These devices are good but you do need to more technically capable to get the most from them.
Will be sticking to mine for a while as minimal button & no d-pad devices are ****e in the real world, I have yet to see anyone who can type as fast & error free on a touch keyboard.
I've had my fuze since it came out and i love it. I usually run the latest energy rom on mine though and I didn't like the phone near as much without it. So my advice is if you have a little computer know-how and are willing to read the forums the hardware is just fine and everything is here to make the fuze exactly what you want it to be, well aside from the 1Ghz speed and wvga res of the new gen of phones I'd say go for it
Oh and I second the look at the diamond 2 if you don't need hardware keys cause it has a better blue tooth stack, but no keyboard means I won't buy personally

once you put the new roms on it you would think it was released in late 2009
So does any one know what are the best roms and changes?
it all depends on which phone did you previously used...if you have used low level phone..then definately you will like this......i love this phone.....especially when using energy roms.....as previously i had htc opal.....
I had the HTC Fuze and the problem with these phone with a keyboard is that it will eventually break over time. The phone was also thick and heavy. Oh yeah, the D-pad was practically unusable. I dont know if the Touch Pro shares the same problem as the Fuze. Anyways the main thing that got me to sell the phone was the keyboard breaking.
the board will break????
