Hard Reset has to work...Cuz it restores default everything.

Hi Webazoid, I just checked and there is no other folder starting with "d" except the ones you mention.
Just hard reset to restore the original ROM.
Good luck.

he renamed the folder to d so it could start with anything.
to help him out go through your hklm registry and see what folder you have that he doesn't. and it should have the contents of what he initially posted.

you probably attempted to hard reset by going to clear storage in settings right?
if so hold down the volume down and center button, then press the stylus in the soft reset hole. Keep holding down volume down and center until it comes up with a message on your screen saying its gonna clear all data yada yada and there you go.
IF that doesnt work.. i guess re-flash the rom.

i just hard resetted. works fine now. lost all settings though.

Too late, but it was the Software folder, based on the content you list.
I know you already have a Software folder but it was probably recreated empty by some program.

2nd boot screen just a white screen

Hi,
Originally posted in the Universal forum, but no response. So am trying here in case anyone has had any similar issues.
After installing and then removing SMAATO news reader I have lost my windows mobile 2nd boot screen.
I know its called welcomehead.192.png and is located in Windows
The file is still there in ROM and I have also copied it across into Windows again (solution offered by searching through other threads). However when I soft reset after the Orange screen, all i get is a white screen.
Can anyone let me know how to restore, I believe other users have had issues with pss reader too.
Thanks in advance. (My device is the M5000)
Matt
Having the same "problem" from the same cause for the last 2 months.....got used to it though, since it does not affect functionality....
white screen
Sorry can't help but I have exactly the same problem due to the same cause on Prophet (SPV M600) so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have contacted SMAATO, so will let you know.
Other users have had same issue with PRSS Reader and for them, when they uninstalled the reader, their splash screen came back.
Matt
white screen
cheers - look forward to hearing. Wonder if it's coincidence that we're both uk orange? You'd think there would be a reg tweakt hat would point to the second screen to load.
SMAATO replied and said they are looking into it!!
I read from some people that installing PRSS Reader also causes this issue - but that uninstalling restores the boot screen. I tried this but it didnt restore my screen.....and the uninstaller didnt remove the PRSS app completely - resulting in more searching on the web to find out all of the files/reg keys to get rid of.
I do wonder to myself why I installed SMAATO/PRSS in the first place!!
Matt
Thanks for getting back - no doubt it will be hard reset which I dread!
Have you tried that? or doesn't even that help.
If there's any chance of you listing the files/reg entries to delete I'd appreciate that as I had same problem & simply searched ppc for anything with somaato in it, so I'm sure I've still lots of cr*p left on it.
cheers
Hard resetting does restore the boot screen, however restoring a backup will give you the same behaviour - unless that backup is from before SMAATO deinstallation

Hi,
In your post you mentioned about manual uninstall. I dont know about SMAATO that uninstalled OK, but for PRSSReader - to perform a manual uninstall:
1. Disable today plugin, if it is active
2. Delete registry keys:
HKCU\Software\DaProfik\pRSSreader
HKLM\Services\pRSSreader
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Today\Items\pRSSreader
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apps\David Andrs pRSSreader
3. reboot the device
4. delete files:
\windows\AppMgr\David Andrs pRSSreader.dll
\windows\David Andrs pRSSreader.unload
\windows\zlib1.dll
\windows\libexpat.dll
\windows\prssrtoday.dll
\windows\prssrenc.dll
\windows\prssrsrv.dll
<installation path>\pRSSreader
Hope this helps.
Matt
Since I got some ActiveSync-problems, I tried cleaning out my device and finally found the cause of the white boot screen:
Older versions of pRSSreader install a zlib.dll to \Windows\ overwriting the built-in one. Now I just renamed that to zlib1.dll (couldn't delete, because it was in use) and on my next reboot: voilà - there was the 2nd boot screen again!!
Newer versions of pRSSreader install the file as zlib1.dll.

Nice one mbirth you're a star - worked no problem!
Just curious - Do you know what zlib is? and is it safe to delete it now it's renamed and soft reset?
Thanks once again
P.S. I now have zlib.dll; zlib1.dll; AND zlibce.dll !

I can also confirm that it works brilliantly!!
With regards to getting rid of the old file - I renamed zlib.dll to zlib1.dll. After my device booted correctly I moved the zlib1.dll to my storage card and all is still ok. If you have something like total commander, after showing ROM files the zlib file is listed in the windows directory. If you hide them - then you shouldnt see any zlib.dll files - unless another application has installed them, but a clean device will only have the zlib.dll in ROM
Hope this helps.

zlib = gzip-compression-library. See Wikipedia. I guess the deflate-algorithm used for PNG files was faulty or missing in the pRSS-version of zlib. With deleting that file, you have the original built-in version back active.
If you already have the newer version of pRSSreader, you might want to rename the file to something different than zlib1.dll since pRSSreader 1.3 already installs a zlib1.dll.
After a soft-reset, you can safely delete the renamed file.

3D Menu missing when Hard Reset

My HTC S710 kept on restarting and didnot go beyound the HTC screen. I did a Hardreset... But 2 my surprise after the hard reset the 3D menu screen is gone. This is strange as it should be inbuilt in the ROM. Do we have to install 3D Menu separetely and if yes where can I have the application to install so that I can have the 3D menu display back on my S710.
3D Menu?
Usually, if your device can't boot, pulling out the mem stick and reboot helps. Push memstick back in after it has rebooted.
i can't find hard reset i don't understand where i found expert???
Click Start and look for a folder called Expert. In it you find Clear Storage.
Start it and type 1234 and click Yes, Your device will reset all settings to manufacturer default.
I think it's the same as Dopod C500 in Taiwan, which you have to register to their website to download it back, put it in your storage card under root\2577 folder by cardreader. Put the card back in then it will install automatically.
If you can download from the official website, could you please send me a copy, I want to try this one out too, many thanks in advance.

Having you tried browsing your device with your PC and delete from there...also use something like phm task to see if there are any hidden tasks running related to it..also ensure your registry is cleared of it....If I were you I would make a HR my last resort....thats my 2 cents worth. GOOD LUCK.

Hard reset =/= restoring all the system files?

I am using Touch HD (BlackStone), I installed one of the hot fix from HTC and it seems causing my phone lock up with the ICR program. I did hard reset and reinstall the ICR and it still crashing all the time. I spended 2 days playing around with countless hard reset and the problem was still there. Finally I flashed my ROM and the problem seem gone now. Seems like the hot fix replaced some of the system files and the hard reset didn't restored them.
I just wondering what exactly hard reset does? Does it just delete the extra files and settings installed by users without restoring all the system files?
a hard reset restore all files of your phone (delete all contacts, messages, settings, programs....) to original parameters.
It's like a "fomat c:" for a computer !
So when I flash the ROM image into the phone, it will put it in a protected area in the flash ROM and hard reset will copy all the files from there to another portion of the flash ROM and execute from there?
when you flash a rom, it erase (or replace, it's the same) the 'older' rom !
a hard reset just delete all files ! if you hard reset your phone, it will be like you buy it, when you power on your phone at the first time !
there is no multi-partitions, one and only one OS can be flash, install and run at the same time !
I hope it's clear, and I answer your question, because my english is very bad....
Hey, if you try format c: ,you get rid of ALL datas on your disk, including OS !! So, it´s not like hard-reset Hard-reseting deletes all user-made data, but it doesn´t do anything with ROM/firmware files, so if you changed them, you can get them back only by reinstalling OS ;-)

Ah that explain why hard reset didn't fix my problems but re-flash the same ROM into phone did.
So there is a list of files in ROM to tell the hard reset program which are needed to keep?
thanks
sorry, it's to hard for me to explain what I think in english

Hardware Reset nightmare

My tab developed problems and all got worse after I tried to update the Contacts.apk from a thread. I backed-up the original files and restored them but still nothing worked. I decided to do a full hardware reset but things only got dramatically worse.
Now the tab is basicall destroyed. I get crashes one after the next, cant use the phone, cant open contacts, all crashes again again.
Doesnt a full hardware reset recover all all stock apps in its place or not? I have no idea what to do at this point anymore
It seems whatever system files that were damaged are still there and worse... dont understand the mechanics of this... I thought a hardware reset meant THAT. But it just "looks" like all my custom apps and confirations were reset to original but all problems with system files are there and even worse than before. Have no clue what to do
I also tried with the system off the method of pressing and holding the “Volume Up” and “Power” buttons at the same time, then after recovery screen appears navigate and select “wipe data / Factory reset” and pressing the “Home” button, but after that and the system re-starts, same thing! All bad.
Can someone please help me? How can I restore all files and everything back into the Tab as originally shipped? OMG, what a nightmare....
Thanks in advance.
Once you mess with files in the root folders they are damaged for good. A master reset does wipe everything but it does not have some magical copy of all system files stashed away to overwrite, this is why the phones are rooted, to keep you from messing with these files. Your best bet would be to just flash the device and start from scratch. You could also just extract the contacts.apk from an appropriate rom and possibly copy it over from your sd to the unit using ADB.
Sorry, like he said, you will have to rebuild. But think of it as an opportunity to try a few new things.
Do you have a backup made by CWM3 when you installed your latest rom? You can restore it if you can get into recovery.
