OUTLOOK problems - General Topics

Cingular 2125, HTC Wizard, XP Pro SP3, Outlook 2002.
I have a problem with Outlook. It won't back up my contacts. When I do, it "successfully syncs" and never writes the new data...only sometimes reporting any error at all.
I've tried re registering the OLE files, doing a repair install, and even a complete reinstallation of Outlook 2002, but nothing works. I keep getting the following error:
Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key UNKNOWN\MsoHelpAWDlg\CLSID.
Google searches have turned up a number of possibilities, but none have helped me fix this problem. It's not the OLE files, it's not contacts with notes, it's not a corrupted PST file...
To me, the beginning of the key, UNKNOWN, implies the problem. It's obvious that Outlook has forgotten where to look for its own registry values, but I'm not sure where this data is stored. I've even checked *in* the registry and the values seem to be present and correct. It's just that, somewhere, SOMETHING has gotten corrupted...and I've not been able to find it.
Because of the error, Outlook won't let me install, uninstall, or repair install the package. Even tried putting it in a different directory...same results. It always fails at the same point, with the same error. I'm at my wit's end...ready to do backups to my laptop, if the desktop won't work right. HEEEELP!
Can anyone help?

WMDC + VISTA + Universal Mobile 6 Problems!

I'm using Thinkpad T60 Vista.
Yesterday, All the sudden both of them didn't want to sync anymore. I have to delete partnership and setup a new partnership.
TODAY, after synchronizing, all my contacts and calendars, tasks disappeared.
When I tried to sync back to my laptop, a dialog box popped upasking me to make a new partnership.
Any clue why this happens? It's so scary on so weird.
Is it the WMDC or the Vista or Mobile 6 Jwright version? I don't really have any clue at the moment.
Thanks
Ok I am able to narrow the problem better now.
Whenever I leave my Dopod 900 synced connected with my laptop and when there is a phone call coming in then I proceed to unplug the usb to pick up the phone, This may result in some sort of data corruption in syncing status, I think. Because after that, when I try to re-synhronize the dopod 900 again, it would try to synchronize from ground 0, so it will delete every synchronized data such as contacts, tasks, calendar in my Dopod 900 and re-transfer from desktop computer into this device all over again.
This is very scary and unacceptable. Could anybody else replicate this problem?
Thanks
Bad bad bad!! I'm using final version of Vista, Final version Office 2007, and Dopod 900 Windows Mobile 6 Jwright.
if you open outlook 2007 and then write your contact and then in notes just write something.., after you finished synchronizing, the contact was successfully copied onto the Dopod 900, but the the note didn't get copied!
If you write the notes within the contacts under Dopod 900, and then synchronizing it, the note within contact would be copied back onto computer with no problem. so it's only the other way around the problem
Same problem
I am having the same problem. Exactly. Did you manage to find a solution or workaround, excepet being force to only change notes on the PDA? This is so annoying and absurd.
I am now getting the following bizarre message: "Desktop synchronization cannot be completed. Reduce your mailbox size by deleting some items and folders and try again."

I was able to fix it by going to Settings > Connections and
Opening the "USB to PC" dialog window and taking out the check of "Enable advanced network functionality"
Do u know how i can flash Uni on Vista? I tried do it, but i crashed a bootloder and i don't know how i can fix it. After a turn on, i see just a bootscreen nothig more. I can't do a hard reset, because it come back to bootscreen.

Check the Wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Uni_ROM_Upgrade
And if that fails:

Everything now is OK.
I had the 'Desktop synchronization cannot be completed. Reduce your mailbox size by deleting some items and folders and try again' error message. Finally cured it by deleting duplicates in calendar and duplicates in notes, deleting the partnership on the device and on PC, since then everything is syncing fine.

Hi Kushmir
I am getting the same error message as you'
Can you kindly tell me the steps how you managed to cure it?
What do you mean by deleting duplicates?
Thanks

WMDC "could not access the necessary network..."

I have just posted this over on the Microsoft Technet forum:
"Apologies that this question is similar to a lot of others but I haven't
managed to find exactly the same issue on this forum. I've had no end of
trouble with WMDC as seems to be the general concenus among many users.
The old problem used to be the fairly common one where the error report
states:
"Activesync encountered a problem on the desktop: Support Code 85010014".
That was solveable by deleteting the existing partnerhip and setting up a new
one. The problem would hold off for a couple of days and then begin again.
What is happening not though is I get a message saying:
"Synchronization could not start because this desktop computer could not
access necessary network resources. Please restart your computer and try
again. If the problem persists, please contact your Administrator."
I have tried to following:
Deleting existing partnership
Uninstalling and then reinstalling WMDC 6.1
Hard reset of mobile device
Run diagnostics in Outlook
All searches have revealed problems like this using Activesync and/or
Outlook 2000 and the advice is it to repair Outlook and upgrade your version
of Activesync (on the PC).
I have just flashed a new ROM onto my handset and it synced. I attempted to
sync it again 15 minutes later (with no reboot of either the handset or the
PC) and I was back to the network error message. Rebooting the PC (as
suggested by the error message makes no difference).
Thinking about it the problem began (I think) when I installed Windows Live
Mesh. I don't think the two can be related though as Mesh isn't sharing
anything near my .pst files etc. All I am sharing is one folder in my 'My
Documents' folder.
Any suggestions from anyone who has had and fixed this problem?
I'm running Vista Home Premium, Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1, Outlook 2007, HTC TyTn running Windows Mobile 6.1."
Anyone with any suggestions? I've had nothing from anywhere else either.
It's getting really quite annoying!
Stupid WMDC......!

ActiveSync Error

My wife fails to sync her 8525 with her laptop. The last time that she synced was 7/22/08. Now when she tries to sync she gets an error "There has been a change made on your server that requires you to re-synchoronize all item on your device. You may lose changes made since yor last successful synchronization". There is a support code : 0x8600050D.
Her laptop is vista so she is obviously using WMDC & obviously it can connect. What I don't understand is what server is being referred to? She doesn't use an exchange server or anything like that. Any suggestions would be helpfull. I backed up her device using sprite backup in case I need to hard reset her device. Is there anyway to import the contact from her device into outlook? This way I can delete the partnernship & start fresh?
i think it means that it will just re-sync all items, not just that changed. and by server i think it means the laptop. basically it is almost like starting fresh. i also believe the contacts are synced to outlook.
Thanks, so then basically all of the contacts in her phone that were added since the last sync will be lost. I have everything backed up. So, I may try deleting the partnership & start over. Then run sprite backup & try to restore only the pim. Hopefully that will work. WMDC is even worse than activesync!
To avoid deletions and duplicates, I would suggest a hard reset. I had this problem with WMDC once, and I think it was like a day after last sync. But, as long as you have EVERYTHING backed up, I would start from scratch with a brand new connection, because it may happen again with this connection.
I've seen this message several times when I come back from a trip with a different time zone on the phone than on the laptop. Change the phone / laptop to the correct time / date and try re-syncing again. Hope this helps.

Locating the contact db file in WM 6.1 (contacts, calendar, phone all broken)

My problem is very similar to the one described here, However I don't want to fix it, I just want to TRY and retrieve my contacts!!!!
I am looking for the contact data files in WM 6.1 (in other words, the outlook data files that are probably hidden).
Backstory: The resident idiot here (ME) neglected to sync his phone and back things up for, oh, about 3 months. (yes, you know what comes next, and I fully deserve it!).
The phone has now stopped working... Specifically, the Phone application, contacts application, and calendar application. The rest of WM is working fine, except that there is something causing it to run sluggish. AND the phone will not sync. It will connect, but it refuses to sync. Nothing was done to cause this failure, other than waking up one morning.
SOMETHING is corrupted, but I don't think its the actual data file (logic for that is below), SO before I hit the hard reset.... I thought I might try to back it up manually..... what do I have to lose?
A few more specifics:
1. Samsung i770 running WM 6.1 (but I think more of a WM specific issue than a i770 issue). Activesync 4.5 will connect, but it will not sync contacts.
2. When the phone booted for the first 20 or so times after the problem appeared, an error message would across the screen as soon as the desktop was loaded, but far too fast to make out any of the words.
3. Trying to load contacts, calendar, or the phone application produces absolutely no result. No error message, to hung process, nothing.
4. The messaging application works fine, BUT any attempt to load a contact from within fails. Again, no error message, just... nothing happens, it's like you never clicked it....
5. The radio antenna in the top bar says that it has no service.
6. NOW the error message is no longer flashing by the screen when you boot the phone, but all other symptoms remain.
7. Despite the fact that the radio icon and status indicator claims there is no signal, I can send and receive text messages (I just have to enter the number manually).
8. Once, very recently, without doing anything, an error message appeared and STAYED on the screen. Shape of the text looks about right for the message that previously has been flashing by on the screen, I think they are one in the same.
"Shortcut Target"
"error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename."
ANY THOUGHTS? Primarily I'm looking for the contacts data file (I don't care about the calendar, but its probably in the same spot) to TRY back it up before I hard reset the phone.... BUT if anyone has any ideas about a cause or temporary fix to the problems, I'm all ears!!!!!!
I'd highly recommend trying Microsoft MyPhone, just to see if that can access your contacts. It may be that the contacts DB itself is knackered, in which case you obviously can't get anything back.
Worth a try

Good luck!

Indeed it was worth a try. Connected via Wifi to install (can't use data plan, that requires "dialing" an internet connection, which must use the phone app).
Synced documents, txt messages, photos, and then said "Synchonization Successful". WOOHOO! all done.... OR NOT! checked online, NO contacts information. No Calendar information. Apparently MyPhone takes the stance of "if it won't work, just ignore it and report success".
Thanks, A very good thing to try, but no go
Unfortunately, I can think of a number of different ways that WM could be programed, each pointing to a different culprit for the problem. If it's straight DB access for each program, then the only conclusion is that the DB is knackered. But if there's a some kind of access control program that handles those things, maybe its just the program that's no good (hence the message that it couldn't load the target shortcut when the phone boots up).
Anyone have any ideas where to find the DB itself? I can always try the traditional (and very bad idea) of a file swap.....
Looks like this mystery will go unsolved... last chance to figure out where to find the contacts db file is. I'll probably be wiping it tomorrow, can't live without the phone much longer. Thanks for the suggestions so far!
Search for PIMBackup, that will enable you to save all your PIM related stuff and then restore it once you have a working device.
Edit
Forgot to say this doesn't require you to install anything, just save the EXE to your memory card and then use File Manager to run it on the PPC.
"Connecting to outlook...."
"Could not connect to Outlook."
Beautiful suggestion, I really thought I had the answer there... Thank you!
Seems to be that poutlook.exe is knackered, but that really would not explain why the Phone (cprog.exe) won't load...
PIM Backup log history is mostly what could be expected:
appointments failed - cant connect to outlook
call logs worked
contacts failed - cant connect to outlook
messages worked - "connected to outlook" (but thats a different db and a different connection app, tmail.exe)
speed dials worked
tasks failed - cant connect to outlook
So it comes down to this: PIM.vol is knackered, OR poutlook.exe is dead, and I'm not sure which. Anyone have WM 6.1 and feel like emailing me a copy of poutlook.exe? (powderkeg500 ~a~t~ gmail ^d0t^ com !)... I'm sure the versions may be a bit different... but *shrug* maybe it will work?.....
Does anyone know if I can simply copy PIM.vol to my computer, reload the device, and then copy PIM.vol back to the phone? If the answer is absolutely yes, then I can simply try that. But if the answer is no... I could be shooting myself in the foot
i think copying PIM.vol off and then back on might work, but i seem to recall it may require Total Commnader to get it back on as it's locked by the OS on startup - deemed a system level file i think.
i remember doing this once myself but can't remember that far back now.
Sorry for not sounding more positive. You might like to look at alol.net.br as they offer a free Exchange acount you access OTA and so your contacts would always be backed up in future.

ActiveSync-intermittent

ActiveSync - intermittent problem with "retrieving settings"
I have this problem now on my Touch Pro. I have also had it on my Kaiser. This is an intermittent problem where - occasionally and unpredictably - when I connect my phone to my pc, I get an error when the pc attempts to "retrieve settings" from my pocket pc. It fails to do so, and then only allows me to access files on the PPC, no syncing possible after I go through a setup screen.
The fix for this is simple but time consuming: On the PPC I do menu -> options and then delete the device (pairing) there. On the PC, I remove Activesync and reinstall it. When both of these are completed, I reconnect everything up, go through the setup screens and all is well. Until it happend again.
I am using AS 4.5 on a PC with XP. My PPC uses 6.1 (The Kaiser was 6.0). I will also add that I have LOTS to sync in outlook:
400 contacts
7000 Agenda entries
100 Todos
20 notes
I have - actually over the last 2 years! - searched for a solution, I have searched these pages, googled, etc, etc. I see lots of people have more permanent problems with activesync connectivity, but my problem is different: I could be fine for about a month and then have a problem for no apparent reason.
Can anyone help? Does anyone know what happens when the activesync program on the pc says "retrieving settings"? Is it looking in the PPC registry or at a file used for activesyncing (e.g \pim.vol - mine is over 19MB)?
I am happy to go poking around in either devices registry, and will look at all suggestions.
I would
uninstall activesync
and go to regedit and remove everything related to activesync
reinstall it sync everything
hardreset the pda
and sync it again so it get all data from outlook that would
fix the pim being that big

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, in the past I have also manually deleted the pim file - without sucess.
I would guess the problem is down to the volume of data I'm syncing and that something is just getting confused occasionally. If this is the pim file then the only solution is my own rather brutal one. But maybe its just a control file or registry setting gone bad - any ideas?
I have effectively done a hard reset with my move to a touch pro and, in any case, don't want to spend days reinstalling everything !
Oh, and some final thoughts:
o This happened more often on the Kaiser - possibly due to its much slower USB speeds?
o Every time it happens I loose all my speed dials in my phone- aaarrrggghh!
Anyone have "insider knowledge" of what's going on?
