Ok so I've tried to download and install a few 3rd party apps and I can't get them to work. I have the allow 3rd party programs box checked. I can download them but they won't launch and install. The only one I was able to try and install is the itunes remote program but it fails at the end. Any ideas?
I have downloaded several and they all work, try to uninstall then reinstall again is all I can recommend man.
I'm having the same problem, and I'm actually kind of worried that it might be because of changes in the system between when the emulator was released and the phone was released. I can't imagine that would be the case, but you never know.
I'm having the same problem cannot load any third-party apps even though I have the box checked. Hopefully the OTA update will correct. I've tried re-downloading several times. I click on the .apk file and it does nothing. If I hold my finger down on the file until the menu pops up and I select open, nothing happens either.

I think most of the freeware apps out there are for an older SDK and so they won't work until the developer updates them for V1.0
The only site im currentry using is slideme.org. They have some aps for version 1.0. Also u download their Application SAM so u can find and install directly from ur G1. and its free.
I was able to get gEZTIP to install the other day, it is a tip calculator. Had to allow 3rd party apps but it installed right away.
Opera would be soo freaking cool!
Android SDK version
A lot of 3rd party apps were developed using an OLD version of the SDK (beta versions).
The G1/Dream runs the final version 1.0 RC19. If the app you are trying to install is not programmed using said android version, it will NOT install.
Only way to install those apps is to download the source code to the apps and update it to use the new SDK instead of the old one (not for non-programmers).
I have already done so with the file browser and got it to work on the G1. However, some functionality has been removed from the SDK in version 1.0 because of security reasons and a lot of apps that were developed using Beta SDK's will NOT be able to be upgraded to 1.0 SDK.

This IS THE REASON indeed why they apps are not running on G1! I can confirm this. In our directory of free Android apps most of submitted software is 4-8 months old and thus compiled with OLD and even OLDER SDKs (yes, there were few iterations and the compatibility has been broken several times).
We are now going through all apps in the directory and recompiling it with SDK 1.0. I'll report back here when we are done.

i somehow lost all my app links in the market, i have about 130 apps installed and would like to have the possibility again to update them.
is there any way to get my app links back in the market?
Titanium Backup
already tried Titanum Backup but it says that there are no recoverable links or something like that....
any other methods other than reinstalling all the apps?
Lol, if you don't want to reïnstall all the apps, how would youvlike it?
Only way is backing up your app + data to restore with links
i have them all backed up with titanium but reinstalling them with TB doesnt fix the market problem...
In titanium delete the data for the market and install one app on the market and uninstall it
well i had to reinstall all the apps for them to be visible again... i hope that doesnt happen again.
now i have an other problem, whenever i move a app to the SD card it also disappears from the market.
any way to display them if they are on the SD card?
I´m with the same problem. After installing CM7 last build I receive the new Android Market (2.2.11) and all my downloaded links gone from the market.
When I look for an already installed application its appear as not installed and then I have to download and install it again to its appear in market downloaded list.
Any way to fix that?

i could not find a other solution, in titanium backup/restore you can long hold on the apps and then go directly to the market to download them, that made it a bit less painful to install them again

Yeah I find another similar stupied solution: QuikMarketLinks, this app will list all your installed applications and link to their market page. I downloaded again 60 programs.
If you install AppBrain application you'll be able to reinstall all your applications in one shot (provided that you had already synchronized your phone with the site) as the list is saved on the site. I'm not sure it will reinstall your market links yet but this isn't a big problem as AppBrain - like the official market - shows when there are updates .
I've also noticed that the applications that I've got on my SD card are displayed as non-installed in the market whereas they are displayed as installed in AppBrain app.
The bonus of the application is that you can browse the Appbrain site on your PC, select the applications that you want to install and when you synchronize your phone it will install these applications.
Really a great app!
You might want to try this as it worked for me.
I installed several apps manually by running the apk and selecting install. These apps didnt appear in market as installed, and presumably werent being checked for updates.
I went into settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All->Market->Force Stop & Clear Data
Launched Market again and after re-accepting the terms, all the apps that I had manually installed now appear in my list of installed apps.

find it with a file manager and try to run it and the above happens
have also tried installing it with windows installers meant for phones with no luck
yes i have a check mark by allow unknown sources
yes i have tried several installers from the market
yes i have tried different file managers from the market too
get the same result
can you install apks on unrooted machines?
Does app from market install?
Shouldn't matter if you're rooted or not unless you're trying to install a system apk

yes market apps work just fine
Have you tried using the "install application" option in Asus Sync?
Can you tell us what app? Maybe it's not compatible or something. If you got it from a pirating site or any other site, it could probably be corrupt.
just got several aps ones that i havent been able to install any other way pirated and some that are not to install useing asus sync
It works great if anyone knows a work around i would still like to know just so i wouldnt have to be home to install apks
Thanks for your time guys
hi.
I used tablet 'a', installed firefox on it. Then made a backup (using Astro) of its apk. Then copied this apk to tablet 'b' and pressed it to install. The installation began- then after a few runs of the green installation bar a message appears "App not installed".
What is it and what can I do?
(I just wanted to note that most other apps are totally fine).
thank you
AFAIK the apk downloaded from Play is different depending of your OS version, arm cpu, and I suppose resolution too.
Most times same apk will work in most devices but maybe firefox has different versions...
BTW you have access to many firefox current and previous versions in F-droid.

Try uninstall the installed Firefox in your device, and then Install the new one you have downloaded. It should be good.

+1 true bro
Yeah it's really rare that a backup works on another device cause of that say dapgo, arm, path, version of os and some app like flash or some add-on makes the installation incompatible and prevents installation.
I have an ulefone touche 2, Titanium Backup pro> backup of XXXX app > go my ulefone touch 3 . . . . surprise ! ! ! ! won't work to install like you i think it's the same prob, the only difference.....internal hardware.....
I have Android 7.0 on my Note 5. I'm trying to install an older version of Gmail (I have the Unknown Sources thing already turned on) . I have tried downloading the APK files from various sites, but every time I click "install" it always says it can't install the file because it's corrupt.
I've had a few updates since getting the Note (it's been about a year now since I got it from AT&T) and I think one of those updates may be what's causing it to stop installing the APKs. Obviously other changes have been made under the hood, but it has to be the OS because I could install APKs when I first got the phone (back when it had Marshmallow on it).
I've tried wiping the cache and even doing a factory reset and it still won't install the APK file. I've tried several APK files and I keep getting the same response; App not installed. The package appears to be corrupt.
What's really odd is yesterday I was reading an article and it mentioned installing a APK for Google Now integration with Nova Launcher. I thought what the heck and downloaded the APK. It installed without any problems. I got this APK from the same place (APKMirror) I was getting the older APK versions of Gmail. I wonder why this one worked and the Gmail ones didn't?
If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it.
Thanks.
I managed to install an older version of ES File Explorer this morning. I got it from the APKMirror webite. Unfortunately, none of the Gmail APKs will work. Obviously I can still install APK files, so I'm going to have to search around on some other sites and see if I can find a good one for Gmail.
I have setup multiple users on my device (even though I am the only one using my device) and things are not working perfectly, or the way I want it to.
The issue is primarily with side-loading apps on secondary users.
Even though the multi-user environment appears to be completely isolated, that is not completely true. An app can be installed on the device only once. When installing the same app for different users, app installation happens only the 1st time. What happens during subsequent installations is simply creation of a separate data folder for each user. That is why one can't install different versions of the same app for different users. Installation would always fail if such a thing is attempted, unless the newer installation is an update to the app version already installed on the device (in which case all users with the app installed will see the same updated version).
When side-loading, some apps just fail to install in secondary users. Does anyone have an idea as to what could be possibly wrong? These are free apps (often downloaded from Google Play Store), so there is no license verification issues. This can happen irrespective of whether the particular app is already installed for another user or not.
Is this a bug with the whole multi-user feature or is there something that needs to be done to get this working?
I have tried this on three different devices (rooted as well as non-rooted), running on Android 8, 9 and 11. They all seem to have similar problems. Some apps install, and some don't. Is this an Android problem or an app-related one?
Please note that apps that fail to install in secondary users, install and run perfectly fine on the main/ primary user. So this isn't an Android version compatibility issue, but one related to the multi-user feature of Android.
Thanks.

Thanks for the link. I was almost tempted to believe that the problem could be with the apps not supporting multi-users. So I did this to test:
I created 2 secondary user accounts.
On one, I signed in with my Google account and installed some apps from the Play Store. I copied their APKs.
On the other user, I did NOT sign in with any Google account. So I can't access Play Store. I tried sideloading these APKs. Some got installed, and some didn't.
Are these apps (that failed to install) somehow dependent on Google Play Store for installation? The fact that they installed on the user who signed in with a Google account means that they support multi-users. So we can rule that out.
I tried MiXplorer and it successfully installed on both users.

I think I have figured out the problem.
Apps that refused to install were actually Split APKs, and I was trying to install the base apk file extracted using a file manager.
Backing up the App Bundles for such apps using SAI and installing them worked perfectly.
