Its all soft and what not....I sold mine off last week and went and got a Vodaphone VPA Compact 3...this is quite sturdy which can withstand my abuse....So what phone do you guys think is good...lookingwise and stregnth wise????
Doh!
First off, this forum is populated (mostly - I hope) by sensible adults.
Your use of the word 'Gay' in an obviously detrimental way would probably not be so welcome. It certainly isn't from me.
I know, lots of stupid kids and even dumb adults use it in that way but, you are grown up enough to know that you want a windows mobile device and not an 'Iphone' or some other hyped rubbish.
I would reccomend you utilise your maturity when thinking of ways to show your disaproval. Honestly, it should generally make you more popular to *sensible* people.

I think that the best devices are probably:
HTC Athena (If you want a Big power House - GPS-VGA-Ati Video Card-Huge screen)
HTC Kaiser (If you want a small power House - GPS - Fast Processor)
HTC Touch (smallest PPC I have ever seen) (Popular with Ladies/if u only want to use phone/Pim functions and value battery life)
Dell Axim X51V (If you want the best Graphically Accelerated device available)
Gay, gay, gay... Quit being so PC.
Kaiser or Hermes both are loaded and from what I understand, durable.
both my Vario II (Hermes) and Touch (Elf) are thoroughly heterosexual mobile devices.
the Touch seems to be seen by some as a "ladyphone", but i've dropped mine several times and it's hardly got a scratch on it. except for when my girlfriend decided to cover it with sand on the beach in Cyprus.
still, i made her swim two miles to get me a beer and some ice cream.
gay?
well, i'm no fan of being PC by any means, but i'll say it looks like a girly phone. buttons look stupid and i hate the blue hue, so i got my girl a black herald instead and think it looks much better.
so, not "gay" but stupid. the SC430, Celica, certain Nokias are also girly looking, but still look good. no such luck for the Wing, especially when compared to all of american carriers' htc offerings. and yes, the MDA is the second ugliest of them all as well

I've got a Dell Axim and know it is sturdy and a lovely pda but it is not a phone and i am selling mine now just because I've got too many toys (can one have too many toys? My hubby thinks so)...and I was after another toy, so it's got to go...so sorry to let it go (no smilies here for very sad!)
I've bought it to try linux but could never get a decent distro for it as I am a very beginner on using linux. Also I've fancied wowing people with connecting it to a lcd projector for presentations without a computer!
I am planning to get an Ubiquio 503 because of the form factor but I've heard it's got ROM issues.
The "blue hue" is a rubber like material that makes it hold on to the surface of your car's dashboard, etc. It's actually quite useful. Black would have been better, but they wanted to be different. At least they didn't use their signature pink...
EDIT: The Wing also feels a good deal sturdier than the MDA it replaced.
So true

I completely agree with you in this matter, but honestly people in this world need to stop being so "sensitive". The problem with this world is that there are too many ******* and whine and complain about anything that is offensive to them. Some people just need to learn to man up and take a blow to the stomach rather than whining after someone used a deragatory term.
I am perfectly happy with the WING... which I bought to replace my MDA which sucked. I'd love to get a Kaiser next, but I'm perfectly happy with my WING and I don't think its "gay" by any means.... I'm sure the people over in the herald forum would agree.

If having a wing is gay, then consider me a FLAMING HOMOSEXUAL. Because I effin love my wing.
Im waiting for 3rd party companies to start making some REPLACEABLE plastic for the phone, like perhaps a black "soft gay" back piece instead of the blue.
I guess once you go black "soft gay" you don't go back. I'm looking forward to new "soft gay" parts for my gay Wing.

Im gay with excitement; no doubt.
LOL!
Its because of where I live and where I work, with Law. I consider use of these sorts of terms as bad as it gets. Its not about being politically correct, its about knowing different types of people and actually caring about the language I use because I know what I say will affect different people in different ways.
I remember one of my mates would call everything cheap or anyone who was tight a 'Jew' or 'jewish'.
I just dont think its nice or necesary. It shows that you are ignorant in regards to the different ways in which people think. Its nothing to do with being politically correct.
Anyway, thats your problem not mine regardless if you like men or ladies.....or Wings
My girlfriend agrees with me.
So does my other Jewish mate.
Everyone has to grow up at some point. This is offensive to me. If it was a racial slur I am sure people would not tolerate it.
Lolol
This actually reminds me of the sorts of posts that you get on the www.qj.net quick comment box's. Hundreds and thousands of kids all screaming your PS3 is PWned, your 360 is Gay.....
God damn it pisses me off!

Okay, what shoudl this thread title be?
I see that the first poster caused offence by using the word "gay" but I wonder what other word he could have used to articulate what he meant. I am pretty sure he wasn't trying to offend the gay community in his post. He's just seen that this device looks a bit, well, erm, - what are you supposed to say without causing offence?
Effeminate? Camp?
I'd be interested in what words should be used in this context!

Care to share what those prior devices were? If they were a bunch of OMAP 850 200mhz devices, then it's really not saying much.
confirmation in plan how much you say spread, every day that passes always discovers more this fantastic one ppc.
you and energy59 I ask why not to open a forum all Italian (like fact for tytn II)?

For me, the video driver is not an issue, but now that the community jumped on it, i do DEMAND that HTC releases something, because it feels kinda laggy
This is my first "decent" PDA (former were Palm 3 and V, both VERY black/white screens ) and I am very happy about it
is the gps really laggy as the video shown? Thanks

navigation software on polaris work very well , I'm using tomtom , garmin xt and destinator 7 without problems
This is my first PPC device and I'm very happy with it. The GPS works very well with TomTom and Google Maps.
Worth every penny.
Yeah, same with me: I'm completely with this device, and I must have used a dozen other models over the years. I know people want to demonise HTC over this 'cause they've got their righteous consumer indignation on, but I feel like this device does everything that was promised and more.
It's a shame, really, because this is getting a lot of press, which might deter people from buying HTC devices, when I think they'd probably all be completely happy with them -- and those extra sales mean more focus on the Windows Mobile platform, which means more software solutions and better integration between other systems and these devices. So the community is kinda shooting itself in the foot with this.
Just one more vote from an avid PPC owner...
TC is the best I have used. Bar none. GPS is fantastic (TomTom), TouchFlo is great, weight and size are wonderful - and video performance suits my needs. I'm with the guys who say if you are looking for a high performance video device - why are you looking at a mobile phone??? I understand that it's like having a Ferrari and being forced to drive in the slow lane, but I convert my video to 240x320 and it runs smooth as silk on CorePlayer.
If we get the updated drivers from all this press, great - I'll use them. But as others have already said, I sure hope that we are not hurting ourselves by pushing people away from the WM platform and HTC!
PPC: Toshiba e740 -> e750 -> e800
WM: Blue Angel, Artemis, Trinity, Kaiser, TC

I partly agree with you ,but what else can we do?
We know that they wont make the drivers unless we have them cornered somehow?
The point is that we have already bought these devices under what we believe is misleading specifications.

A kindred spirit! My first device was a Palm V and I stayed in the PalmOS world until 4 months ago when I finally retired my Sony Clie TH-55 and moved to a Windows Mobile based Smartphone (a second hand Artemis initially as an experiment to see if I could live with Windows Mobile and a 2.8" screen, now Polaris).
Battery life is a huge issue for me because I remember the Palm V days when I could go on a week-long business trip and not need to pack my charger. I would fly somewhere on Monday morning and on the Friday evening, as I was reading an ebook on the flight home, I would usually get the first low-battery warning message. I used it heavily during the week though to read ebooks in the evenings and take meeting notes during the day plus regular contact lookup and even the occasional spreadsheet work.
My next device was a Palm m515 and that had about half the battery life of the Palm V and my final PalmOS device was the Sony TH-55 which had even better battery life than the Palm V, maybe about 30% more.
So what's my take on the Touch Cruise battery life? Well, to be fair and compare like-for-like you really should keep the phone switched off since the PalmOS devices I'm comparing with don't have phones, but I haven't done this. Even keeping the phone on (but not making or recieving any calls), I seem to be getting about 10-11 hours of PDA activity on a charge. This isn't quite matching my TH-55 battery life but it's way better than my m505 and probably pretty much exactly the same, or if not then really, really close to what I got from my first Palm V. And this is with a fairly bright colour screen (setting 3 on the slider) and keeping the phone registered with the GSM network.
Summary? So far I think the TC is a very worthy successor to my Palm V and I'm delighted with it; so much more functionality and broadly comparable battery life. Nice job HTC.
I always want more so I think my next upgrade will be triggered by either an out-of-warranty failure of my current device or something coming onto the market with at least the same performance characteristics as my existing TC and at least a 75% increase in battery life (that's about the level where I'd be willing to write-off my current investment to get that level of improvement). Failing that then I think this is a 2-3 year keeper at which point just the 3-year-itch might catch me and make me upgrade just for something new.

Nowadays, you hardly need to pack a charger... If there's a computer nearby, just bring your USB cable...
When researching for a new phone I came to these boards and after reading about the elf and the nike(i) and seeing that the Polaris was released, I decided to buy the Polaris since I needed the 3G and Wifi option. I use the machine as part of my work since I am away from desk a lot. I just have one thing to say. It rocks!!!! I am glad I bought it before all the complaints came along because it might of made me change my mind. The Wifi, 3G and GPS work a treat (TomTom no longer needed!). The device is fast and lets me browse documents, keep-up-to-date with emails and reply to urgent emails, etc. Connectivity to email (e.g. Exchnage) is a matter of a couple of clicks. Surfing is great and I quickly can get traffic info, train schedules, browse websites, etc. If I need to do things that require my laptop, I then use the phone to get my PC on 3G. As part of my work I use the phone all the time. I have been so enthusiastic about the device that even my brother in-law is considering it for his sales execs instead of the far inferior Blackberry. One of my colleagues now also wants one. Hell, I am such a brand promoter I should be on the HTC payroll (which I am not). The device is that good.
David
So before I call up HTC and ask them if I have a fualty device, I thought I'd ask the guys here
I got my Touch Pro around two weeks ago, and after getting annoyed with its screen sensitivity (lack off) and the terrible scrolling method they have implemented, I flashed it to RomeOS 1.21....
The problems:
Even when its in the case, the phone sometimes does random things, and yesterday it called my friend on its own, while I wasn't even touching it (it had been on the table for atleast 10 minutes - granted it was face down, but still?)
Does HTC think this device is for people with small hands?? Clicking the cross at the top right and the two buttons at the bottom of the screen are are chore... It wont recognise my thumb pressing on them, I have to point my nail at them!!
Scrolling through the touch flo interface gets laggy esp. when you scroll slowly past internet related sections... Guess this must be a software based problem though.
Scrolling through the contact list is just ridiculous - When I flick the list (on All People) most the time it goes into overdrive and just keeps scrolling. And when I finally find the contact I want and try to click the name (again thumb press), it assumes I am trying to still search through the contacts and moves to another contact.
Using opera mobile is one of the worst internet experiences I have had... I had heard raving reviews about it, but using it I just find everything to be slow - Zooming is laggy, and again clicking sometimes brings up a context menu, or sometimes takes ages to recognise that I have clicked a link and so I have to click that little icon at the bottom right of the screen to see if anything is loading.
Most my problems seem to be related to the touch experience on the device.
Does anyone have the same issues? If not should I call up HTC?
+1 On most of it
The laggy experice is sad, if you cant make something work 100% why realease it? I have the pro now but have had the diamond without keyboard and trying to write with it took about 3 weeks but still you would type wrong. I took my friends iphone the other day and no lagging wile browsing thru menues or when typing not one misstyping.
And how long has the windows mobile been around? 6 years + ? And still they cant get **** to work. I have tried custom roms but they also have bugs.
And if anyone is gonna complain about my iphone experince stfu. Cause after iphone all windows mobile phones are trying to make their interface look cooler, Xperia, Omnia, Diamond etc. etc.

Um are you sure about that? I am a iPhone hater, but doesn't mean I won't correct you on how wrong you are. First off. Let me explain some points. the ONLY reason the iPhone is soo popular is because it has a capactive touchscreen, is idiot usable, and is made by apple. If you compare it to the Omnia, it is pretty much very close and I would say the Omnia wins if it has a better resolution. First off, apple tried to base their interface off of previous work. Then winmo companies stepped up and made a better interface. TF3D, Omnia, and Xperia panels ARE NOTHING LIKE the iPhoney crap. Seriously? Do you even see a connection in TF3D and iPhone crap interface? Cause I don't. I don't know where you're going with this one. I could kinda see it with the panels, but then again, you're pushing it when comparing it to the iPhone. I can agree that HTC looked at the iPhone and tried to make a better interface using it as a base, but seriously. TouchFLO 3D looks nothing like the iPhone interface or "whatever the crap interface is that doesn't have a name."
Im not saying that they copyed the entire iphone look. Im saying that after the iphone they all tried making their phones hotter. And that you cant disagree with. And whats with the apple hate in this forum? Are you guys scared of them? Why not take the best out of them. Everytime someone here mentions an iphone its like saying something nasty about your mom.
First off all, apple did it. They have never had a phone on their products list but they made one and its a topseller, for how long has htc been doing phones?

Eh. I'm hating on apple for making a great phone, but killing it and not making it as customizable as windows. The average consumers love it, but the tech savvy people hate that. We LIKE complicated things. Yes, I'll agree that after apple made the iPhone, HTC and other companies stepped up. But that happens. Before, they had no reason to step up. Before the iPhone, believe it or not, people barely ever complained about their PPC. They loved it and HTC had no reason to make it better if we were still buying it from them. They are in for the profits. So now, when they see some people diverting from HTC devices to iPhone and other devices, they decide to make their devices better.
Reasons iPhone was top seller:
WAY WAY WAY too much advertising
Very cheap (Reason for 2nd gen. First gen's reason is: see below)
Too over hyped and too over looked.
From apple
Very "user-friendly"
Many mac fanboys bought the iPhone
I-phones are designed to be idiot proof, hence they sell to mostly idiots with money to waste/ burn.
My diamond has a better resolution, its smaller oh & I can do way loads more things with it than an I-phone can do.
It's kind of like the I-pod issue, overated/ expensive crap...
But we all have our own opinions, its just mines is that the i-phones an overated heap of junk
My diamond doesnt phone any1 unless i make it do, maybe u have a faulty device or maybe u have ghosts in your house that like messing with u ?

Im seeing your point. But also your saying that HTC had no reason? What kind of bs is that. So just cause they have something that works they dont need to evolve? Then I say Halleluja iphone, cause the windows mobile looks like crap, if it wasnt for the tf3d i wouldt have spend that much money on this phones. And you cant hate apple for that reason cause then you should hate ericsson, nokia, sagem, samsung, motorola etc etc shouldnt you?

I actually love the opera browser on the diamond & i especially love the way it zooms in & out with the wheel, maybe its just cause your not used to it yet or maybe you just have made up your mind already & just hate your diamond pro ? wasnt it ?
either way I think the way opera runs on a diamond rocks, seen a sh*t load of phones. pda's with "so called internet" & the way the diamond runs with opera is the best ive experienced yet. I tried out an I-phones inet use on a m8's & found it a bit limited shall we say, sure the touch is great but the actual ability of it's browser's total crap.
my other 2 cents worth on this arguement here
just my 2 cents here..
i love opera..i find it very easy to use. The only problem i have is that scrolling through the bookmarks is slow (without the scrolling bar)
as about the finger size, i have to say its a matter of getting used to.you have to get used to where exactly you have to touch the screen with your "big" fingers to get it right.
Calling on its own: This is related to the phone unlocking andthen the screen touch does the rest. What you have to do is make sure its locked when not in use. There are many applications that do that. I use sensor lock, others are throttlelock, s2u2, etc
Personally i dont have many issues with the contact list. Then again, you can always type the first letters and it will find them in no time..so no real need to scroll unless you have to.Dont forget you can always use the dpad and the ok button to select (if you cant do it with touch)
Thanks for the replies... I didnt really compare this to the iphone, so not sure why all the iphone talk :S.
I spent the last 20 minutes, repeatedly re-aligning the screen till it recognised my input well, so I guess that issue is fixed.
I then downloaded a contact replacement, so now its kind of better (apart from the fact I have to go to programs to reach contacts) - anyone know how to replace tabs so I can link it to my new contact manager.
I am going to try Skyfire as a replacement to opera mobile...
And as for Iphone being for idiots - I was one of the first to get the Ipod Touch, and whenever my friends would use it for the first time, everything worked fast, and it was easy to use, so your right it was for idiots lool.
My belief of why the Iphone is so popular -
When I first handed my touch pro to my friends, it was dog **** slow, and they got really lost when it went into the dirty winmo interface. Because I paid over £400 for it, I defended it to no end, saying it was the first firmware and it would get better. But this is what seperates the iphone to every other device. When a newbie uses the iphone, it just works and works quickly. So word of mouth of the product is excellent. Even though the HTC touch pro has more under the hood and better features one time users never see it, instead all they see is a slow interface with steep learning curve.

Be aware of the fact that Skyfire is only partially working on VGA displays -- changing the orientation and possibly some other operations will cause glitches. They've promised a VGA version, but they haven't suggested when that might be available.

Not to keep the iphone praise/bashing alive but....
I owned WM phones/PPCs for the last 6 years and have loved them. But with any techie I became bored with my Kaiser once all the fun had been lost with rom flashing. It was time to find a new phone to mess around with and flash crap on. I picked up an Iphone just for fun and immediately though "wow, it's fast, intuitive and simply works". I quickly bought a Touch Diamond and started to compare them head to head. the Diamond had a great screen. But it was slow, very slow, even with tweaked roms. I sold the Diamond about 2 weeks into owning it and have not regretted it one bit.
BUT, I do plan on buying a Touch Pro and getting rid of the Iphone. The iphone has its issues like any phone but it has worked almost flawlessly for months now and never slows down like the diamond/kaiser/wizard/hermes/excalibur....that I have owned.
Is the iphone for idiots/sheep? Probably, but for me it was nice to have a phone that simply worked, and worked well. I just miss the big things like mms, cut and paste, OPERA, file explorer, TomTom........ I am willing (I think) to go back to a slower phone for more options.
one last thing, anyone who has actually used an iphone will agree, thier onscreen keyboard is the best in any device I have ever used. WTF was HTC thinking with the Diamond's onscreen keyboards. There almost worthless in comparison. I can type almost as fast with my iphone's onscreen keyboard as I could with my kaisers built in keyboard.
HTC has a long ways to go with the TF3D interface, it is very slow. I like the idea of it but the implementation is just poor. It has been 3 or 4 months now since I last used it so maybe it has gotten better.
Guess I will see when the Touch Pro hits AT&T's shelves later this week(I hope).

And you cant hate apple for that reason cause then you should hate ericsson, nokia, sagem, samsung, motorola etc etc shouldnt you?

look fanboy if you are such a iPhone lover and hate winmo and htc then take your htc back and GTFO. No point in whining that all PPC phones are not just like iPhone. it wont change anything.

Idk what you're talking about lawl. The only brands I would ever think about owning and have owned is Samsung, Sony, and HTC. I despise all other brands. So I guess yeah, I do hate all other brands besides these 3. TF3D is fast on my kaiser so I have no idea what some people are talking about it being slow. If you people don't like your diamond/touch pro, just stop whining and move on to the iPhone if you think it's so great. I guarantee you'll miss a lot of features if you've been with WinMo for a long time.
Seriously people... are these faults due to a bad handset? or is it a widespread issue?
As for skyfire... installed it, and I could only see half the app!! Shame - there online demo seemed so good.

Yeah, I'm really going to miss Skyfire until they issue their VGA upgrade (that is, assuming AT&T brings out the Fuze first! -- it seems like the two companies are competing for who can delay the longest!). I use it for nearly all my browsing on my 8525, and I like it a lot.
Look, the iPhone haters can hate on the iPhone all they want but you can't dismiss the fact that Opera Mobile on the Touch Pro is barely acceptable. Mobile Safari beats it i'd have to admit. Like an earlier posted mentioned, it's slow as bollocks...OMG is it slow. Slow to acknowledge any input, slow to refresh/redraw and so on. Granted it's better than Explorer but just barely.
I played with a friend's G1 and the web browser puts Opera Mobile to shame by a long shot. I was jealous. Now i still love my Sprint Touch Pro but gravely disappointed in the web browser, it could be so much better.

Eh. Haven't noticed about Opera. Could care less about opera. I use Netfront and Skyfire But skyfire is out of the race till they develope it for VGA
is the opera complaints here applicable to all users? or is it limited to a few % of lemons out there?
if it's a lemon issue then i'm not too concerned...
and look guys...every product has some flaws and may have lemons here and there...even apple makes lemons - 1% of 2nd gen iphone...10mil translates into 100k...that's aweful lot of lemons don't u think?

Well it's been a long time coming but I'm finally giving up on microsoft to produce a decent handheld OS. I've used the XDA's since the first one, I've owned an XDA, XDAII, mini, jamin, k-jam and a polaris and I can honestly say that the OS has not improved one iota all these years.
No i'm not going with the iPhone, I'm going to get a simple old nokia and just use a UMPC for any mobile trickery needed.
This is NOT a jab at all the brilliant developers of this community which have carried MS's cash cow all these years on their shoulders - you truly were the ONLY reason to buy a PocketPC.
Here's hoping things improve, but don't hold your breath.

considering the amount of mobile phones he has had with WinMO, it will be a huge shock to go back to a nokia... He will for sure be back soon! Just a crisis like we all have some times...
I´ll stick to WM till Android has a more stable and mature OS
Symbian and Iphone systems never!
Well best of luck with the OS change. We'll be here if you decide to return someday...
I will join this guy as soon as the next Android drops.

I went to a nokia after the jasjam aka: tytn. It took me 8 months to come back
I think Defroster has been understood wrongly. As I believe he doesn’t think there is better OS but he just voicing out his disappointments of MS and WinMo improvements.
I have to say I fully AGREE with him on this.
My device history is almost the same. The reason that I bought my first WinMo was to combine PDA with Phone so that I don’t need to carry 2 devices. I paid for my first device (2002) almost 1000USD. Many of my friends and colleagues thought I am crazy to spend so much money.
Yes it was not fully Phone but also not fully a PDA (computer) but I though just hang on for couple months then MS will improve the things tremendously.
But look to the changes/improvement that WinMo has made in last 7-8 years which are in my opinion Almost Nill. However the devices cost still ca.1000USD..
Be frank just for comparison: Do we see any desktop software that has almost the same capability and same UI after 8 years???….but cost the same money??
Furthermore look in to the upcoming WinMO 6.5. I believe it is just ridiculous to put such crap in to the market after 1-2 years development by a Huge Company like Microsoft. Again I don’t see any improvements and Still there is nothing out of the box..
If I would be Bill Gates I would immediately Fire all the WinMo Team. It is unacceptable for Engineering company to rest on a product for more than 8 years and don’t have any major changes. The best example for such behavior is the American Auto Industry.
Ohh well It is well known that if a Company is to large the efficiency of that company compare to middle sized one much much lesser but they DO have longer breath.
Yes Yes I know the bad thing is there are no much better alternatives right now.
However same As Defroster I am considering getting better value for same money (1000 USD) Therefore I am seriously Looking to the new 9-10inch Netbooks like Asus Eee ; Acer aspire, MSI Wind etc. They are costing less than 500 USD (some of them around 300USD) those have Standard battery live up to 8hous. Additionally I am thinking to get one of those simple Smart phones like HTC Excalibur or Cavalier. Yes that would set me back again 8 years but I get better value for my money and can be much more productive then I am with a single expensive toy…
I too totally agree. Microsoft is such a big company and yet it never deliver what a user want or need for so many years! Is it that they have no Competitors for the pass 8 years?
The biggest change I saw was when HTC came out with TouchFlo 3D. Nice cool looking interface, smooth scrolling, Finger friendly, Easy access to messaging, web, ETC. And they are only just covering up the ugly part of microsoft winmo. And HTC did it in just a short time. Even now with the new Winmo 6.5, the Titanium screen looks crappy! The font on the screen are so ugly, the item list covering the whole screen. scrolling thru the list is a torture to my eyes. It scroll the list not the selection!!
I believe with enough time Android will be far ahead.
Let us all cross our fingers than 6.5 becomes a flop.
Don't you remember what happened to the flop we call Vista? The successor Windows 7 has fixed all those bugs and works like a proper OS.
Hopefully a flop will make them realize that they need to take their finger out and actually produce something decent (not saying WinMo is bad or anything).
/me joining the android bandwagon asap. For sure the OS for the future
PPC is too good to be replaced..
I definately won't change back to nokia, SE or any non WM devices..
I need alot of medical softwares.. and those can't provide any decent 1
Ehhh, If you think about it, Microsoft is always going to be a Big Company.

You could start by reading Wiki section for Universal, aka XDA Exec, it's an excellent, well written resource and has all the information you could possibly need and all the answers to the questions you could possibly have.
The ROMs you might be interested in can be found in their corresponding sections on this forum, each will have a description and list of things included, as well as comments by other members on performance, problems encountered and solutions.

I am here, of course, where else would I be, hehe. I had my 128Mb for a while, just nothing new came out lately and I resorted to the best combination of ROM+SPB MS3.5+Opera10b and other bits and pieces, the trick was to find the combo where everything worked. Besides, I purchased a semi-broken LG KS20 running WM6.1 and played with that for a while - not bad, especially considering 128/256, but still a far cry from Uni.
Not sure where the Uni is heading now, but it is starting to fade out a bit. I renewed my contract with t-mobile last year and I took a G1 the andriod based machine. Well its good but.......just not got that something that makes a great machine. its got all the features to make it a great machine, and it does as its told, but it spends more time on the side than with a sim card in it. which Rom have you settled with in the end? I liked tomals 8.71, its well finished and it all works. its a shame SRS wow doesn't work on it, coz I like that prog a lot.

The thing about SPB MS, as I mentioned more times than I care to be reminded ofmad, is that it removed the necessity for a flash looking ROM, so pretty much any Vanilla is fine, even WM5, if one is keen to keep VC. I had a great time with Tomal's 8-series, in particular 8.2, 8.5 and 8.9, but there were other conflicts, especially with Opera betas, I really liked the look of 10 and it appeared to be somewhat less problematic compatibility-wise than 9.5 and I didn't like 9.7. So once the Opera issue was settled - the rest was a smooth sailing.
As far as SRS WOW is concerned - Tomal's 8.2 was the last version it was running on i think...(have to check on that, not 100%), for other ROMs there is a patched Tomal's version.
I would dearly love for HTC to reconsider the return of the same form factor and size (funny, how so many people were against it in the first place) with updated specs to handle the pressure. Would be a winner for me. These days I tell everyone I have a MINI NETBOOK!!!! with touch screen/pad fold/phone capabilities and they want to cry with envy. All it needs is Shift's specs.
The unfortunate news for those keen on WM7 is that the platform will not support anything made for its predecessors, rendering pretty much everything done so far obsolete within a very short period of time. Only limited support for 6.5 will be offered by Microsoft.

Its funny how a different discription will sell an object. I was a joiner for my main job, and I was fitting a lady's window and she didn't want me to secure it with screws. she wanted it nailing in (lord knows why) anyway I told her I would secure it with threaded steel dowls (screws) and she was over the moon. so your mini notebook idea doesn't supprise me at all.
I gave up on spb ms as it eats a 64 mb memory to much, but I have plans to upgrade the memory so will go back to it. I recon HTC are following fashon with their phones, they all are the same thing, and one day we may end up with a return to the notebook style. I once bought a wvga tosheba 900, it was the worst pda I have ever owned. It wouldn't even play a video well, so I got a refund. So here I stay with my Uni and my Athena (now that is a big PDA) I seem to remember not having much joy with the srs wow patch, it did funny things to the camera and sound.

True, I gave up on SRS WOW altogether, actually, the best ROM that worked with EVERYTHING was Tomal's 8.2, can't remember now why I wanted to move to 8.9 so much. Yep, with 128Mb SPB MS is a beauty and if my Uni didn't get enough attention from my friends, it sure does now with all the touch movements and screens shifting, haha. I got it fitted with an iPhone screen protector, took a bit of cutting to size, it's very glossy, so looks very close to those modern netbook screens, the protector is something like $1.20 for a pack of 3 and I don't peel the outer layer off right away, so use it for a few weeks until it gets mucked up, then peel it off to reveal the proper smooth protector underneath, that one lasts for ages and you can't even see it on.
P.S. Would love to lay my hands on Athena... Might advertise for a broken one, always wanted a Shift or similar, don't care about the size, just can't afford the price.
Forgot to mention. HTC is in the middle of court case. Apple is suing for partial Android copyright infringements. Should've gone after Google, really, but HTC is a much easier and smaller target.

That is interesting news, I will watch out for that one.
I bought my Athena off Ebay in one of those rash moments, and once I bid I had that "oh ****, what have I done" moments. I remember all day I was wishing to be out bid, but fat chance. but they are dropping in price like a stone now. They are the dogs do-dah's of PDA's and spoil you for screen size, so now the Universal looks quite small screened to me now. The BIG problem with them is the phone, you cant use them to the ear coz they only work on speaker and if anyone is near then they hear the lot, so its bluetooth all the way. most of us use the LG style-I. Its a pen size thing that looks and works like a tiny phone, and leve the Athena in its large pocket or bag. Another great thing is you can plug into the telly, and with a bluetooth keyboard surf the net or watch your films on the big screen. Even the mighty Athena is getting old hat now though, but its down to what you need at the end of the day.
