Hi,
Just got my Touch Pro on Saturday, and really quite impressed with it. One worry i have though is that i get charged exorbitant fees for data when on EDGE and not HSDPA
Is there any way to enable calls on roaming but not data? Failing that, is turning off data access in the comms manager a surefire way or preventing data from being received/transmitted? Last thing i want is a massive bill for data.
thanks,

First of all, HSDPA is going to charge you just as much for data you use. Anyways, if you want to cut off all data transfer search for a program called NoData.
On 3 here in australia, on HSDPA, i have 200MB included in my data pack. On edge its $1.65 a mb... exorbitant, but thats how it is...

WHA? That's ridiculous, data is data no matter what speed you get it at. Well, whatever the case I don't know if you can disable data just on edge. Sorry.
I will happily just stop all data and switch it back on when i need it.
Yeah its an absolute rort.

im using energy rom 3.0 50109 on my fuze and got this outrageous bill from att stating i used excessive data. if i ever got on the internet was using wifi. i know the data connections button was always off and the gprs auto connect disabled. is there another setting i missed?
It's gotta be a mistake on their part.
Look at your bill line-by-line and compare it against your previous bills so see if the data usage is about the same.
Also review your sign-up plan to see what you're data rate per month is. If it turns out you're not on a 3G (Enhanced Data Plan) then it's possible that you were billed at the Cellphone Data Plan rate - here in Canada we have:
Enhanced Mobile Data Plan (aka 3G) = 1Gb/mo, $30/mo
Mobile Data Plan = 2Kb/mo, $15/mo (intended for basic WAP phones, goes through a proxy)
Good luck,
i will do that. i know i dont have a data plan but i do have unlimited sms/mms and when i signed up att said their media net/ gprs needed to be enabled in order for me to send pics and video. like i said, any data was through wifi. But i will take your advice and thanks for the reply hilaireg!
Its definitley a mistake on their part. I started using Energy Rom 3.0 and I haven't gotten an outrageous bill like that. And I pretty much went through all the settings in the rom to disbale GPRS use.
In the past, occasionly AT&T has done retarted things, like charging me $30 for going over my SMS plan. What they did was the they combined the number of texts I sent/recieved for 2 months and billed me on that.
And it is really frustrating that I still haven't gotten my $30 back to a point where I don't care anymore. They can have it. I'll just think of charity.
Now 1 grand is a different story...unless you REALLY feel like being generous and helping the CEOs out
It isn't a mistake on their part, your phone must have somehow used the data connection without you knowing it. 100MB at the PPU rate is $1000. It is possible that you thought WiFi was on but really wasn't connected.

i think if his wifi was off it he would know cuz when ur wifi comes on, immediately it pops up all the wifi within the area and ask which one to connect, unless he is using a existing one, which should of showed the wifi icon regardless, our bill *am under a family plan* was recently over charged apperent for something i downloaded said att, but my mother never got to the buttom of it.
funny thing is i dont even use att service, expect maybe for mms which is unlimited and so is sms
oh and am using energy rom am using xECK29x Premier Series
The same thing happened to me. I called them, spoke to possibly the nicest woman in the world and she fixed everything and then gave me 40 dollars off. It worked out for me... give it a try. can't hurt.
Remember that even when you are on WiFi, default for AT&T (if you run connection manager) is to go through mediaNet to download data, not WiFi. Even so, speak to CS and they will most likely take that off. Also, remember to ask them to put data block on your plan if you are not planning on subscribing to unlimited data. Peace of mind.
i had about $300 in data usage once, and they removed it when i said ill add unlimited data, so maybe try that....
energy roms have 3g turned on as preset, you have to disable it from the comm manager. you can see it's on and you can see it connecting -sometimes even when the wifi is on too. NRG also has an application called "disable data" which does exactly that, never allowing 3g or other stuff to connect if you don't want them to. good luck!
Thing I did after freaking out at a $3 bill--I called them and had them completely disable data (picture messaging included) from my account--
Problem solved.
Super Bill!
Here's what you can do to add data.
First off, get yourself a POS phone like an LG Shine or some other dumbphone that can get on the internet.
Pop your sim card in, wait a few minutes, and then call at&t.
If you have unlimited texting, data is only $10/month. If you don't have texting, data will be $15/month. Once it is added, just switch your sim card back to your fuze.
I've been doing this with the Fuze and iphone with no overages for about eight months.
Considering an upgrade from my 8125/Wizard (no AT&T data plan) to a Tilt/ Fuse/? (something cheap, in good-great condition, 400MHz+, GPS, ???).
Will AT&T require me to upgrade to a data plan if I just stick my SIM card in a phone I buy here? Does "unlocked" really matter any more? I've heard they are detecting device ID's and forcing data plans based on that.
Thanks!
Data Usage is sneaky!
Well, here's what I think about that. They won't force you to get a data plan, but I highly advise it, as your phone will use the data whether you physically go on the internet or not. At least that is my experience with it. I let my niece use my Tilt with her sim card which had no data plan, only texting and my next phone bill was an extra $100. It was still accessing the net for stuff, even though I turned off the auto update for weather. So, my advice would be, if you are going to get a smart phone, get a plan with it. It's worth it in the end I think. Oh yeah, MMS also uses data...

Some people have internet (wifi) wherever they're at so there's no need for a data plan. Also, MMS is free if you have a texting plan so it uses data, but doesn't charge you for it.
To the OP, if you get ANY phone outside of ATT (Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.), you don't have to get a data plan.
Thanks for the feedback. I have had an 8125/Wizard for several years with no data plan. As also pointed out, MMS does work without data plan. Well sort of... I can rarely get them to go through, but we don't get charged for it since we have the AT&T messaging plan. $30 /mo for data is just outrageous to me, I pay less than that for reliable/fast internet access at home.
When Tmo is figuring out if you have used your 2gb's of "full speed" data, are they actually deciphering if you were using 4g or 2g? I would assume they can't and they are just counting all data (besides wifi) until you hit 2gb's and then throttling you.
Anyone have any info on this?
If you're hitting 2GB on 2G alone that'd be pretty amazing!
If you're talking about using 2G when you don't need full speed to save your quota, it'd still count I think, but at least it wouldn't get used up as fast!
I believe that's correct, meaning if you use 1GB of your plan on a 2g connection, it would still count towards that "full speed" quota.
Of course it counts towards your data limit.
Throttled speeds are lower than 2g speeds; therefore, 2g can be called high speed.
"High Speed" is a relative term.

Thanks guys.
Yeah it goes towards the total.
If you really want to get yourself pissed off try this: setup a proxy server on a machine, then do all your internet traffic on your phone via your proxy. You'll find that t-mobile is off (in their favor of course) by about 18%. I'm working on a paper now that I hope to put online soon that shows all the logs and how t-mobile is RIPPING US OFF on what they SAY we use and what we REALLY use.
How are you taking into account all the data the core and downloaded applications the os pulls.?

cause I have everything passing though a proxy.
Hope you know your tests are going to be inaccurate. Not going to go into detail but you are forgetting something. T-Mobile isn't ripping you off and they have no control over this.

I have a unlocked g2x on cincinnati bell and they throttle at 5gb, which is better but still sucks. I was looking on my account online and my data usage was going up even on days I was at home all day, connected to wifi. I called customer service and found out that even if you are connected to wifi, if you have mobile data turned on in settings it still counts on your mobile usage data. Only way to use wifi and not have it count on your mobile usage is to turn mobile data off when using wifi. A bunch of bs if you ask me! You may want to check with tmobile and make sure this is not the case with them as well.
Also, there is a fix I found that is suppose to work with tmobile to disable the throttling. It has to do with altering the services.jar file on your phone. I tried it on my phone and it didnt work, i figured because cincinnati bell is using a different method to throttle people that tmobile uses. U may wanna look into this so after u get throttled u arent stuck with a unusable phone for the rest of the month. When i was throttled i could barely send email it was so slow! google 'disable data throttling on g2x' to find how to do it.
There is this thing on the top of the screen by the battery charge, time and **** there is a logo that looks like H+ with a checkmark under what is that?
If you have poop on the top of your phone I recommend you clean it before using the phone. As far as your question, try looking in your manual for that answer.

i did but there is no pic like that with the checkmark under it..
Most likely you have wifi enabled so your data connection is present but turned off.

Alright because i just bought the phone and unlocked it i didn't want the att dataplan so im using wifi, will att find out and make me buy the data plan?
I would have to say yes. Possibly if you keep data disabled you may slip through. Possibly if you are caught and you speak politely to an ATT rep they may just disable your data on their end and let you continue to use the phone with a no data plan. I have seen all 3 happen.

Obviously you are on the rooted inspire stock ROM. Check means network available not connected. Arrows mean connected. If you use market with background data enabled, and market requires background data, it Will connect briefly for location purposes (well, it connects. That's the only logical reason why I can think of because it still transmits 3-4 kb even when WiFi connected). So... One might look into changing APN settings with APNdroid if they wanted to avoid overages on a low quota data plan. But with no data plan at all, they might want to purchase one.
You do realize that internet or not, when your phone syncs with a network on boot it loads handset info to your ATT account, right? I mean regardless of what phones you change to, when you log in to your account it shows what device you are using. They aren't blind to things like that.

Go easy on me as ive never taken my mobile on holiday before.
So I'm from the UK, and flying to Orlando Florida on 6th august, with partner.
I will be wanting to use my phone to call my girlfriend in case we get lost, so I'll be phoning my provider to sort that out..
But as I believe you now use an app to plan your day at disneyland, in which I'll require data enabled?
Is it normal to use your data when abroad, and I'll be fine with regards to data roaming if its unchecked in the settings? I'm terrified of being charged £££ when I get back..
If you switch off Roaming in the Data settings you will not get an internet connection, unless of course you use WiFi.
If you're with Three network, you can actually use your phone in the USA with no extra costs, even your data.

If not already with 3 it would be too late for the original poster join up as they require customers to be with them for 30 days before they can use the free roaming. Also if they are with 3 data roaming will be disabled by default so they need to phone them and get it enabled.
In general the rules for roaming data vary so much by provider and contract that it is impossible to give much advice beyond check what your contract says.
