EVDO or 3G ? - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Ok, so I have like 5 or so months left before I qualify for upgrade pricing at ATT. Money really isnt as much of an issue as other issues, such as network speed, and device features.
so my questions are:
1) My understanding is that ATT 3G is superior to Sprint's EVDO in terms of speed, assuming the same touch pro device is used. True?
2) I know the device speccs aren't really out yet, but in terms of rumors, I've heard that Verizon will criple their version. Is there any other providers out there doing the same thing?
I was going to get the Europe/Asia versions but since there isn't a way to run it off of the 3G networks here yet, and may never have a way, I was thinking of getting sprint next month, or just plain waiting out for ATT or T-Mobile.
What do you guys think? (sorry if this had been discussed before)

AT&T does not have faster speeds, it says it can do 600 to 1400 kbps down / 500 to 800 kbps upload.
I have never gotten more than 1mbps on AT&T download, i have gotten some pretty good upload though, seemed to average around the mid 700 range.
Sprint, now this depends. Sprint seems to have a lot more 3G coverage than AT&T. They have EVDO and EVDO RevA. I visit a city that has RevA frequently and I have gotten 2.9mbps download and 1.5mbps upload.
That was my average test on speedtest.net
In EVDO areas where they do not have RevA I have gotten about 1.2mbps download and about 500 kbps upload average, which is worse than AT&T.
Another thing to consider is the data plan price.
Sprint has all you can data plan for $15 per month, vs AT&T's 40? 60? I can't remember but it was terrible!
Lots of people complain about sprint in general but I have been very pleased and I do quite a bit of buisness with them. I recommend them.

Thanks for your input. Yeah I'm really leaning towards sprint because of it's "Simply Everything" plan which is $99 for unlimited talk/data. All other networks seem to have unlimited talk for $99 but it doesn't seem to include data.

Where is this "all you can data plan" from Sprint? I am betting they do not offer it for plan changes or new subs anymore.

They sure do, its called 'sprint powervision' or just the 'Data Plan'
Its $15 a month. The only stipulation is that you cannot use your phone as a modem (PAM) without getting charged extra. Although there are plenty of ways around that.

pam not on the everything or the talk/message/data share plan but there should be a workaround on the internet sharing i think u might have to go on ##debug# to do it jus have ur msl ready lol

wait until att has the hsdpa by the end of the year of course only some markets but then its definetly fastest

That must be the city of the holy grail, the highest RevA can go to is 3.1 down/1.8 up... So you pretty much have the advertised speeds maxed out, which I've never seen.

My thoughts...
I was an AT&T (previously Cingular, previously T-Mobile) customer for quite a while. I have used GSM almost exclusively for 8 years. I left for CDMA at Sprint entirely because of internet speed. AT&T's 3G coverage is pretty lousy -- at least in the South East where I live. I can get 3G pretty much only in major cities. EVDO is available throughout the entire state of NC (where I live) -- even in rural areas, believe it or not. EVDO Rev A is spottier, but EVDO is fast enough for me.
The throughput is sufficient to sync exchange, play internet radio, browse the web, and download files at the same time. I haven't done speed tests to see exactly what the throughput is, but it "feels" as good as my home DSL service.
Additionally, Sprint's fallback internet, the "1X" service is much faster than AT&T's fallback service, Edge (or worse, GPRS). With 1X, I can still listen to internet radio and browse the web effectively (but not at the same time). With Edge, you can't -- it will skip like crazy. Not to mention that loading web sites and downloading anything takes for-ev-er!
Cost is another consideration. Although it is not published on their website, my data plan is only $15/mo for unlimited data. It does not include Sprint Music, Sprint TV, Sprint Navigation, or other value-added services like the $30 plan. It's not on their website. You have to call and request the "Sprint PowerVision Basic" plan. The basic plan is mainly for more basic phones, but if you have no interest in the value-added features and just want internet, you can get it on fancier phones as well.
As far as I know, AT&T still only has one unlimited data plan and it's approximately $30/mo.
Until AT&T's 3G service has a wider footprint, I would go with Sprint for data-heavy phone use. Verizon uses the same network as Sprint, but their data plan is $40/mo (around here at least), so they were out of the question for me.

My Wife has AT&T 3G, I have Sprint EVDO Rev A. We often between Texas and Florida. My Sprint service wins hands down. Much better coverage and MUCH faster speed. Two weekends ago we watched an entire football game on my mogul from the back of a car between Ft Laud and Key West with not one glitch. I was streaming the live feed from a server in Texas using Orb. We often do the same between Dallas and Houston. Every time we've tried using her phone the AT&T service can't keep up.

That is completely FALSE .... the GSM 3g in the US SUCKS ... EVDO is far better ..
Verizon is the fastest ..
Sprint is 2nd. .
at and Tmobile are far slower... and not as widespread..

I know people that stream Orb on AT&T, and I've used Slingboxes across the continent on AT&T... I think it's more likely that you have a better phone for playing video than what she has. I'm not doubting Sprint's EVDO is faster, but AT&T's network can surely "keep up" with a service like Orb.

Well, it all depends on location. As I've said many times before, I can't even make a phone call from my house with Sprint or Verizon, so if you could even get data to transfer it would be snail slow. Yet I get around 500kb/s from AT&T in the same area... Go figure.

Tmobile vs At&t

new to android... currently using N1 on att edge... contemplating a switch to Tmobile... latest "speed tests" by PC World show ATT as a clear leader for download speeds, plus they have better spectrum and in my exp. allow better penetration though walls. I live in seattle but travel to many major cities on east coast... anyone offer any suggestions with their exp with Tmob vs. ATT? How biased is Pcworld?
My goal is the use the N1 on ATT until they get a proper android device... couple months I hope, or do I switch now and save the trouble...any advice would be appreciated
tmobile and att both have their ups and down
but tmobile now clearly has AMAZINGLY BETTER unlimited min data and text plans for a very low low LOW price
check it out
not a tmobile rep lol
just a very long time tmo user
and tmo's 3g aint that bad
i dont notice any problems with it
thanks for the reply
yeah im aware of the potential $$ savings, however for me that is not the case...im more looking into who will provide the best speeds/least amount of hassle over the next year or so...i have few friends who work at ATT store who are managers, and I can always get anything done to my account I need to...
I understand Tmobile has "great" service, but my experience with them both online and in the stores has been horrible. The sales reps Ive spoken with at several stores have been sorely uninformed and have outright lied to my (by making up answers that are not true about many things, so probably not malicious lies but if you dont know TELL ME!). The latest episode was when a sales rep told me that they would be carrying the HTC Desire in April, and that It will have a physical keyboard and dual core processor!
in my area, as posted by pcworld, ATT completely smokes tmobile in average DL speeds (1400vs 900)... plus im able to pay $60 a month right now and have everything i need..granted i am stuck on att edge with my n1, but its not as bad as i thought...my plan was to keep the phone until att finally got one, but their whole "backflip" ordeal has left me concerned with their openness to google... I love my N1, even the trackball, and would be hard pressed to pick a desire over it... Im rambling now so Ill stop, but last point is that i would have to cancel my att contract, which at only $175 isnt that bad, considering i just last month bought a 3gs for $220 and sold it for $530...
T-Mo this summer is going to smoke AT&T as the fastest 3g network. But as far as coverage AT&T is a little better, plus is true that lower frequency is better penetrating to buildings, that's one problem i'm dealing now with T-Mo,but the price is right,so I guess at the end you have to look for the best one for your needs.
tmobile plans
just talked with a very knowledgeable Tmobile reap... apparently seattle is #11 to receive fiber upgrades, and will receive HSPA+ around may 18th... of course this is all hearsay... they will also be selling HD2s for BOGO $199 contract... amazing deal... very nice phone, they had one today I was able to play with. Perfect size for me... just waiting for a more perfect android port and ill make the switch from nexus one...
just ported my number to tmobile today...hopefully i wont be disappointed

Did you talk to a rep online? Or was it a friend or something? I would LOVE to have some more info on St. Louis expansion further southward and any other plans in the area. I'm currently on AT&T about 10 miles outside T-Mo's 3G bubble. I have AT&T 3G since last October, but am using an ADP1, since my unlocked Roger's Dream broke. I think I am going to switch to T-Mo when I get my free Nexus, but I would love to have 3G.
Anyway, the point is where'd you get the info, and if you can find out anything about St. Louis from that rep (if its in person, if not tell me its online I'll try some more).
K thx bye
Lol just playin, but thanks. Please let me know
Here in vegas t-mo 3g speeds are better then AT&T so TMo was the clear choice for me. The fastest 3g speeds in town here though are with verizon
We tested using 4 phones:
Tmobile G1
Tmobile MyTouch 3g
Verizon Blackberry
At&T Iphone
The results were pretty staggering:
Tmobile G1 - 970kbps
Tmobile MyTouch 3g - 1023 kbps
Verizon Blackberry - 1876 kbps
At&T Iphone - 200 kbps
Funny noone mentioned sprint. You, being number for reliability and all that.
T-Mobile FTW!
I live in the Bay Area and I have done several speed test all over with both an iPhone 3GS and Nexus One. For the most part AT&T gets around 1400-2400 kbps down and about 200-300 kbps up with a 1000-3000ms ping. T-Mobile gets about 1000-1500 kbps down and 300-600 kbps up with a 60-100ms ping. In most cases AT&T does get slightly faster speeds and has more 3G coverage but is not as reliable. Sometimes the data connection disappears or takes forever to start loading. Once both phone do start loading there isn't much difference loading web sites. As far as downloading files AT&T is slightly faster but doesn't seem to have the bandwidth that T-Mobile when downloading multiple files at the same time. I used to be a long time customer of AT&T but got fed up paying $100/month for data/texting/voice and getting unreliable data service where I work (Financial District - San Francisco). Personally I would recommend that anyone who is on the fence to go with T-Mobile. They don't have perfect service but for the price its a much better value than AT&T. I haven't had any problems or issues besides a few select areas with poor 3G reception since I have switched to T-Mobile.
Cities tested:
Concord/Walnut Creek Area: Both worked really well. AT&T what quite a bit faster in speed tests but loading regular web sites was about the same.
Marin: AT&T = Good - Some areas get dropped calls and no 3G | T-Mobile works good as well. Some areas get poor reception for 3G and Edge | Speeds are about the same... AT&T is slightly faster. (Lots of testing)
Pleasonton: Both worked really well. (Limited testing)
San Francisco: AT&T = Horrible... didn't work at all in my building with full 3G | T-Mobile works great... works perfect in the same place AT&T didn't | Speeds are about the same... when AT&T works.
Vallejo: About the same as Marin.
Hope this helps,
- Victor

The reason is that OP has a GSM device and Sprint is CDMA...
T-Mobile because AT&T network is lame. They actually told their iFail users to don't use internet as much because of their weak ass network and they are locking down their android phones so T-Mobile wins of course.
Sigh
Ok Ok I know location plays a huge part in this but let me say this, AT&T is 100% trash compared to Tmobile (based on New Jersey), They pay millions to say they cover 97% of US and they have the fastest 3G in the US. When? 8 Years AGO? I did a test with my friends iphone 3GS (new Jersey) with an app called SPEEDTEST, also did the same test (SAME PLACE MY HOUSE NJ) with the same exact APP SPEED TEST on my nexus one,
Results
Iphone3GS AT&T = 99kbits/sec (test was done 2 times each.) Similar results he was pinging about 4000-5000
Nexus one Tmobile = 1,740Kbits/sec (test was done 2 times each.) Similar results I was pinging about 88=97
I then tested my 2G (same place + same app) = 210kbits/s
This means my 2g was faster than his so called 3G, funny thing is, his iphone 3GS doesnt even say when its on Edge or 3G, My nexus one says when its on Edge (2G), 3G Or HSPDA (which I'm on all day HSPDA full bars in NJ). DO NOT FORGET HOW TRAFFIC IMPACTS A NETWORK, it's horrible. You are paying more, you have worse call quality (both network and phone) considering the 2 microphones of the N1 and clarity of Tmobile. So you pay more? Do less, both apple and AT&T limit you, and you have the nerve to compare? Apple is ditching AT&T for few reasons, 1 of them being 30% dropped calls in major cities, and allowing android phones (better phones) than Iphone on their exclusive network.
My point? Why the hell would you pay more and get less? Not only get less, but slower, and sloppier? The comparison boggles my mind, Maybe Tmobile doens't cover as much, this is a fact as well, but man check their coverage map and see if its available in your area, because it's way better in every possible way.
My plan is 500 minutes with everything else unlimited (mobile to mobile, text, data, weekends, nights) Most the people I speak with have tmobile, so I never even go past 200 minutes ever. This costs me 65.34 a month after taxes and I use my nexus one every hour of the day literally. if you want the pictures to my tests, I'm glad to show my proof, email me at [email protected] or go to my youtube page and see my nexus one vids. I'll be uploading some videos when my friend returns to my house, yes speeds vary even by the day or hour due to traffic, but I'm normally getting over 1mbit/s all day long, he gets very bad lag in his network, he pays 120 a month which is about twice what I pay and his calling/data/all around sucks. Why argue? why bother? I've asked my friends with nexus one in jersey city to test his network and it's almost as fast as mine, so i'm not in luck here, tmobile simply rocks after their network upgrade december 2009, don't forget they'll be doing another upgrade for intense speeds before 2010 ends.
Signing off Gslick, email me for pictures of the tests.
Youtube chan with my rooted nexus one = www.youtube.com/user/exclusivegslick might as well sub if you like the phone and/or android.
i am in columbus area and here tmobile 3G is bad, i dont get 3G at all in my house.
i have a iphone 3gs and it gets 3G coverage everywhere.
as soon as i get off the highway 3g bars with tmobile starts going down.
the funny thing is that even in tmobile store i get EDGE with tmobile phones and the att 3gs gets 3G
and no i donot work with att.
my advice check 3G coverage to whatever city you travel the most.
i would go with mediocre 3G speed but better coverage, instead of blazing fast 3G with no coverage
This all depends on where you live and what type of service quality you are looking for.... I've heard ATT and T-Mobile trashed on forums for various reasons.
I live in Austin, Texas, USA... I can't speak for data service as I'm using a T-Mobile frequency G1 on ATT network - so, I'm restricted to Edge data service.
However, my wife has several friends who are on T-mobile and they constantly drop calls. Which DOES NOT happen to us on ATT. Also, ATT has MUCH better reception in the rural areas where I work than T-Mobile (which is VERY spotty in the rural areas).
So, my wife and I refuse to leave ATT for now. Despite my near clinical depression over not being able to upgrade my G1!
Data may or may not be better for T-mobile in the urban area here - I don't know.
I would check with your friends and family who travel the same areas that you do - who also have service with both carriers and have decent phones.
The claims from store reps will almost always be biased - however, if you have a friend who is a store rep who will give you an honest opinion - I would ask them what kind of complaints they hear "in store" regarding the other carriers.
Don't just take someone else's word from a post on this forum if that person DOES NOT live in your area - as they could have a completely different experience and the carriers' infrastructure could be very different.

AT&T coverage is not a little better than T-MO, it's a lot better, for both data and voice.
I have no idea what make anyone think T-MO America, who is in dire financial straits right now, has the money to keep up with AT&T's massive mobile network build-out. The truth is, they can't. AT&T has steadily been improving backhaul and connection speeds, is getting ready for 4G deployment and has that capacity in place in many places already.
AT&T's network has been improving faster than anyone else's, and that's why they currently have the fastest 3G speeds on the nation's #2 3G network for coverage. But they are far from done, and any competitor who thinks they're sitting still to be leapfrogged had better be prepared to spend a boatload of money to build, because AT&T is. T-MO just does not have the resources (revenue) to keep up.

You're talking out your butthole, pure and simple. Your narrow view of the network is a paradigm child of your limited experience with it. It's nothing more than crap folklore.
Wow, I live in Lewiston, ID. There isn't much around here and I have hit 3.5mb down and 1mb up with my Hero. For some reason lately I can't hit Liberty Lake with Speedtest. Is a couple hours away up by Spokane WA. For some reason it thinks I am 45mi away from Wichita, KS. Still hit almost 2.97mb down and 1.07mb up with a 348 ping.
some ppl. here are getting biased here.
for me i live in columbus and i bought the HD2 was waiting for it for months if not longer, but was sooooooo disappointed when i got it really bad 3G, next to nothing.
call quality soooooo bad, many ppl. are saying that its the HD2 thats at fault.
but i dont know, i have a 3GS in the house and that gets 3G even in tmobile store where the HD2 didnt

thats my personal experience, i cannot speak for other US cities or locations.

Columbus, OHIO- right? I live in the upper left corner of Ohio (Williams County) and want to get a nexus one. However, everyone I know has Verizon. I am sick of waiting so I am going to get one now. According to tmobile's and att's websites, att has the better coverage. I was also considering the palm pre plus ($50 bucks for two!), but I want the sexy nexus one.

Fun thing I noticed about 4g service while at work.

Welp, here's the background info. I work with AT&T next to a corporate store. I have an rooted Inspire 4g. With my Inspire I'm actually on the media net plan and not the PDA data plan.
So anyway I was bugging a work friend a joking around with him about switching me over to unlimited data (smartphone plan) so I could get off of the medianet plan. I got curious and asked him about the whole 4g provisioning thing that was an argument in another thread. We pulled up a customers account and he showed me, you do in fact need it provisioned to access hspa+. But that's not thing fun part of the story. It's been debated numerous times.
I asked him if we even got HSPA+ where I live. It turns out that we do. I just never noticed it because of the data plan I'm provisioned for. So my curiosity got the best of me. We walked over to the display Inspire and verified it was connected to HSPA+. He had already installed speedtest.net on the phone to try it out. We ran it. And I was shocked. The phone was measuring 1.5 down. We already know the HSUPA shebackle. But really? Only 1.5 down?
In utter disbelief I pull out my phone. He knows what plan I'm on and knows it's rooted. I do have the stock radio on though, and non of the build.prop tweaks that have been mentioned. Standing right next to the Demo, on HSDPA, my phone pulls down 3.5 a second.
Now he's shocked. I'm running straight off HSDPA and the demo is connected at HSPA+. We double check that the phones are testing against the same servers on speedtest. We run multiple tests. And consistently my phone pulls a higher data rate then the demo on HSPA+. To make sure we're not going insane we double check everything again between the two phones.
It turns out an engineer was at the corp. store that day. He pulls out his iPhone 4 and shows us something more interesting. His phone, testing against the same speedtest server, always pulls down around 5.
He informs us that iPhones get preferred treatment over the network. This is nothing new or unsuspected. But HSPA+ connectivity is severely throttled. This is deliberately down by AT&T because the network isnt able to handle the workload yet. There also isn't any time frame when the throttling will be lifted.
This just blew my mind. I expected it to be backed down some with it being a new network that's not completely developed, but this much is astounding to me.
I would be interested to hear from others in HSPA+ enabled areas to run multiple speedtest test with HSPA on and off and see what happens.
Or do I sound completely insane and don't know what I'm talking about?
I would rather AT&T throttle the HSPA+ speeds until the network is ready than to deal with what happened to Sprint's network when the EVO 4g first launched. I heard the entire network went down for maybe up to an hour due to all the bandwidth being eaten up in certain areas.
Maybe AT&T is trying to avoid this from happening?

funny, that is NOT what we are paying for! we are paying for 4G service, we expected to have 4G speeds! (we paying for 4G phone, FAKE!) and we paying for HSPA+/4G data plan, FAKE!).
If i pay for cable internet, i expect to have cable internet speeds!, not 56k dialup speeds!
someone please complain to FCC for me!
When my son gets home with the iPhone 4 tomorrow, I'm going to do some side-to-side comparisons as well....probably followed up with a call to ATT. I was told the Inspire would be faster then the iPhone 4 because it was 4G and not 3G. If that isn't the case, I think some monthly credits should be in store until they turn the 4G speeds on.
I'm paying the same price now for data as I was with my blackberry pearl on EDGE, same when I had my iPhone 3g on 3g. Also same price I'm paying now when I used my Captivate. AT&T openly admits that its 4g service isn't throughout their coverage 100% yet and say that they are working on expanding their 4g service.
Nowhere on my bill does it say I'm paying $30 for 4g service specifically.
edit: I forgot they had specific 4g data plans. Yeah that does suck for those who have to pay for that.

I agree. But when the salesman says it will be faster and your phone has the check box next to H+ and you are getting less than 3G speeds, that is on them. If they are not giving you H+ speeds, and you are even getting less than 3G, they should show Edge instead. Anything less is false advertising.

I agree with that as well. I think AT&T should limit the H+ data plans to areas where it is confirmed to avoid these problems with customer satisfaction. They have a coverage map and enough techs out there. I'm sure they could at least tell their store associates to not recommend the H+ data packages to people in areas that aren't getting the speeds.
But instead I'm sure they would rather let people buy something they can't use blindly so they can get more profit.

The price is the same if you have a 4g plan or a 3G plan.
Signing up for different plans doesn't matter. At the end of the day its the same cost. The 4g provisioning is only to access hspa+. Its the same cost whether you live in Ohio with 3g or Philly with hspa+. If your gonna get the inspire you might as well have them provision the hspa+ so when it is.available you can access it.
My issue is the throttling on the hspa connection. As I mention, I'm on a medianet plan which doesn't cover hspa. I'm NOT on a pdanet plan. All this was discovered because I was thinking about ditching my $10 a month unlimited data and signing up for the tiered 2gb hspa plan. I wanted to know the speed difference. And then I found out everything I wrote above.
Obviously I'm sticking with my 3g until things change.
Like I said, I would be interested in seeing thorough tests done around the rest of the country to and see if this holds true. In the lower Susquehanna valley in pa the hspa network is.being throttled.

come on guys, really... ANOTHER thread like this???
Its plain and simple, you are paying for data package, thats it! you are not paying for speeds! This isn't like cable, or DSL where you are paying for speed tier.
You can complain all you want, but they have not advertised a speed that you would be getting, they may have advertised what 4G is capable of, but have made no claims as to what you will be getting.
I'm not just paying for a data package. If all they did was have a data package with no speed reference, that would be one thing. But I'm paying for a 4G data package. "4G" either means something or it doesn't. If they don't really mean 4G speed, they shouldn't call the data package "HSPA+/4G". When the salesman says you will get better performance with 4G over 3G, and then they very publicly say that they are not throttling back the speeds, that means something. Or it should anyway. Whether we should expect to be lied to or expect false advertising from them is an entirely different matter.
I'd love to get faster than 2mb down but I'm not gonna complain. I knew exactly what I was getting myself into when I got the phone. I knew it wouldn't be 4G and so did each and every one of the people posting in the inspire forums. Regardless of at&t excuses and BS.

OH, well then my mistake... i would like to complain that i have a 4G data package but not getting the "4G speeds" while on edge..
Obviously no one is expecting to get HSPA+ speeds while connected on a HSDPA, UMTS, or edge network. Again, the issue is speeds only while connected to HSPA+ networks. I understand not everyone in the country even has access to this yet. And those that do, service is spotty at best.
But I do think when you are in a full coverage area, and compare side by side speeds, and you are getting double the download speeds consistently on HSDPA then HSPA+, then that's an issue.
Actually, that isn't quite accurate. I didn't know about XDA or the speed deception until after the purchase. I knew that some folks had complained about AT&T throttling it back, but also read that they denied it. So I just figured that it was a case of some unique individuals in poor reception areas.
honestly, i think all really depends on the radio. I wish i would have taken pictures before i sold my dell streak, but i was getting consistent speeds of 6 down x 3 up on the stock O2 2.2 rom here in the St. Louis area. Now with the inspire, i have yet to see anything over 2.5 down x 1.8 up. I was using the same media net apn on the dell streak. So unless the caps have changed in the past months, then i am blaming the radio in the inspire.. but i dont care, the speeds are sufficient for my needs.
mepis said:

There's a really good reason why you out performed the stock inspire. Your build.prop is edited to use Hsdpa and hsupa setting hsxpa=3, but stock inspire has hsxpa=1 which only let's it use 3.6Mbps Hsdpa with 384kbps up. Setting hsxpa=3 let's you connect to hsupa and the 7.2Mbps network speeds.

Is there a way to set hsxpa=30 for broadband speeds? Short of that, can I set hsxpa=3 without rooting the Inspire? I'm not opposed to rooting, but it is more complex than I can handle right now.
You can't edit build prop without rooting first. I think if you get temp root it would revert any changes back to stock.

Advice for a possible convert

Hey folks! I'm currently an Sprint customer, but I'm considering a switch to ATT. I'll lay out a few facts so you can understand where I'm coming from. I'm not worried about cancellation fees because I can make our phones roam to VZW until sprint drops us.
-When I got cell service, none of the national carriers could compete with Sprint's prices (family plan, unlimited messaging/data, dont care about minutes). Now ATT's family plans have gotten competitive.
-Between people leaving VZW for economic reasons and people leaving T-Mo because of the ATT purchase, Sprint's network is very overburdened (at least in my area). Given the way Sprint has been flaking out on the 4G front, i'm not exactly filled with confidence that they'll expand their network capability in a timely fashion.
I'll ask folks in my squadron about local reception, but I want opinions from similarly minded people (you guys) about things like customer service and general happiness with the network. Also, what's ATT's 4G plan? As of now, all I've heard of is HSPA+, and I really dont know how it stacks up against WiMax, LTE, regular HSPA (thats 3g for GSM, right?) The store rep said that ATT will be using LTE, but I'm not sure if thats true given that Inspire and Atrix both are advertised as being 4G and use HSPA+.
Thanks in advance for any helpful feedback. For the flamers....well, u know where to stick it.

My advice is go for VZW if you want legit 4g. I haven't seen any 4g speeds on my Inspire and I live in Boston. The 4g data plan is basically 3g, and it costs teh same too.
I still can't bring myself to pay VZW's prices. I know their network is the best, but its not enough of an improvement for me to pay that much more. I'm not so much concerned with current 4g capability, i'm in between 2 4g markets right now, so I think it's going to be a while before I get it. I'm more curious about the future of 4g with ATT based on the fact that the rep, who seemed otherwise knowledgeable, said that ATT would be using LTE in Q4 of this year yet they've already released two phones sporting HSPA+ as their 4g devices. Does anyone know if they're going to switch their technology to LTE?
So what exactly would you like to know? Ask any questions you'd like and I'll answer them.
ATT has great coverage imo. I even have service where my girlfriend (verizon) does not (in many cases).
The inspire is the best phone on att. This is coming from a lifetime iphone man, and I also tested the Atrix for a month and CAME BACK to the inspire.
Data speeds are more than adequate for me, even if it is not the 'true' 4g of verizon. I am more realistic when it comes to data. I am thankful for the ability to be connected to the internet at all times, and if I have to wait a second for a page to load - I'm not complaining. What does matter to me is the performance and speeds of the gps/maps function, which, on the inspire are great. The google maps/nav is implemented directly into the phone and definitely has the upper hand on the iphone, which I feel is att's other competitive smartphone.
Basically, I feel your decision simply comes down to dollars and sense (get it??? haha...), as well as what kind of service you are receiving in your area. Att & sprint are comparable, and both carriers have great android devices (sprint is launching evo3d too, which looks pretty cool).
Basically, how's your service going to be? I would talk to people with ATT in your area and get their opinion. Also, how much money would you save/spend if you made the switch? I'd make a decision on those two factors.
at&t is currently releasing "4G" phones that have HSPA+ at 14.4/5.76Mbps download and upload respectively but they DO plan to run with LTE. Starting in May, they will be decommissioning their 2G network starting in the west coast and moving east, in order to free up bandwidth that they can use to launch LTE. Also, while Verizon purchased the "C" block of spectrum, at&t purchased a company that had vast amounts of what I believe was "D" spectrum on the 700 band as well and ended up paying a LOT less than what Verizon did to get their nationwide 700Mhz LTE licenses.
What I would do is go to the store, get a phone, drive EVERYWHERE that you think you may use it and watch your phone signal, run a few speed tests, check out voice quality, etc., before you make your decision.
While I am FINALLY figuring out the cause of my at&t issues at my new residence (Netgear 2.4GHz WNR2000v2 router is actually interfering with my cell signal massively), I have had issues around town and I am in Denver (the suburbs now) and should have EXCELLENT signal at all the locations I have had issues at.
T-Mobile is phenomenal if you look at their maps and make sure they have service of the utmost quality in your area - I read your post and believe you said T-Mo wasn't an option but I've had a few too many and just can't be bothered to go back and read the post again - T-Mobile has been deploying ridiculous HSPA+ speeds for some time now (on a recent speed test, my buddy got 26Mbps down and 2Mbps up on T-Mo's HSPA+ network) and I don't see them slowing down.
Verizon and Sprint are just disappointments and I think nothing more needs to be said about that.
EDIT: Sorry, at&t bought a large chunk of B-block 700MHz spectrum, not D-block.

Quick question about tmobile's service

I am currently with Sprint and I honestly can't take it anymore. Data speeds are terrible and when I'm bored at work and want to play with my phone I can't. I have the EVO 3d right now so naturally I'm going to switch to the sensation.
I have two questions, 1 ) how is tmobiles data service? And 2) once u go over your data limit what speeds do they throttle u down to?
Thanks

ok i just got t-mobile last month and i don't mind there service my family has it here they say they don't get a lot of dropped calls as far as data goes i think they are realiable i can't say i get a great speed in my apartment but i also live in a odd 4g coverage spot when I'm not home though the speeds are great. as amatter of fact i put a iphone to shame with the speed the guy thought he was something having one lol. but my speeds and coverage are based off the dell streak 7. hope i was helpful

Here is my take on it. I was with AT&T Wireless, Cingular, Sprint, and Verizon and now I have switch to T-Mobile. I switched to T-mobile a couple of weeks ago and the coverage isn't 100% great but I honestly think that HSPA+ is better for the phones today. Its not that fast all the time and we all know LTE is amazing but the battery consumptions of these circuits is insane. I owned the Thunderbolt. 45mins of active LTE use and the phone was DEAD. I would rather have slower data speeds and be able to use the device for longer.
What you can expect with Tmobile is at least 1Mbps if you haven't gone over your data allocation. After that you can expect about 300-800kbps. The highest data rate i've seen on tmobile is about 8Mbps. You probably won't have too much less coverage than Sprint but there is far less coverage than Verizon and At&t.
Depending on your coverage - data speeds can be real good (I average 5mbps). Data throttling will depend on the plan you choose.

T-Mobile data is usually great in most average to larger sized cities. You should be ok in Indy but find a T-Mobile friend if you can to verify the speeds where you live.
T-Mobile outside of a city or in a super-dense population like NY can be spotty or slow.
I'm in Indianapolis an I always get 4mbps down an 1.2mbps up I just switched from Sprint u will defiantly see a improvement

I was a sprint customer, in MY AREA Sprint service went down the crapper. Tmo coverage in my area is fantastic, and has been on my recent travels around the country. Sprint->tmo was well worth it for me. Can't speak for ur coverage area tho.

I just recently switched from Sprint to T-Mobile. With the speedtest.net app I was averaging 300-500 Kbps with Sprint. I'm averaging anywhere from 7-10 Mbps with T-Mobile. The coverage area is great here where I live, and I actually pay less then I was paying with Sprint.
I am in NYC and I have T-mobile for a long time already, recently switch to Sensation 4G and I am getter in average 3mbps download and 1.2 up.
Speeds are great if you are in an area where they have rolled out HSPA+. I get around 7-9 Mbps up and 1-2 Mbps down. If you reach your cap, they throttle you down to EDGE (200-300 Kbps), but some people have said their speeds go even lower than that.
i concur...

I average 5mb down/ 2mb up outside of Washington DC. However, when I am in a sweet spot I have averaged 8/9mb down 2/3mb up. These are great for not being on wifi. HOWEVER, if you are NOT in a tower-rich area you will hate your service. Riding from Virginia to South Carolina recently (on 95 south and 85 south) i maintatined a 2g connection 80% of the time. This severly limited my internet capabilities and download speeds. It was not until I draove through major cities that a strong signal came up. I was very disappointed in this. Results may vary for you though.
When I'm on EDGE Opera Mini makes life so much better. I go from NV to AZ a few times out of the year and I can browse forums, image boards and etc. with no problems due to the image compression. Loads as fast as 3G would.
Sprint's 3G network is really slow, I don't think you will have speed issues if you switch from Sprint to T-Mobile especially with this being a 42Mbps market. I'm not going to say 7-10Mbps is network wide but you should have at least 1Mbps
I am in Tulsa, OK and average 8.5-10.5 mb down and 1.5-2.5 mb up. I went with the 5gb of data and usually finish my billing cycle with 1/2-1 gb to spare.
My wife usually goes over her 5gb, and does get throttled, but its not unbearable. It's edge, but it works for a couple of days a month. She runs a blog and tethers her phone to our laptop or Iconia tablet.

I switched from Sprint because every time I had any issue at all, it was several hours on the phone trying to get it fixed. Not to mention trying to find someone in a store that could do more than pull a new phone out of a box.
So far I am happy. The high speed data is much better than the old Evo. But the lower 2G leaves something to be desired. I may get throttled in the future, but the next tier is only the cost of the "4G fee" that Sprint charged me for my evo that I tried to use the two times I was in an area that had it and found out it pretty well sucked.
I don't think you'll loose much by leaving Sprint, unless you like the saying "Can I put you on hold?"

That's pretty standard with T-Mobile. If you spend all your time in the city, they are great to use. For travelers... not so much.
I left Verizon for T-Mobile about 6 years ago and never looked back. I live in the SF Bay Area and get about 6-8 Mbps down. Not only T-Mobile will unlock you phone for you. I have bin to Thailand and Mexico with my phone and used none T-mobile sim cards. I am not looking forward to the T-mobile AT&T merger. I think the only people that are going to make out in the deal is AT&T customers.
Im with you OP - I was with Sprint (a convert from AT&T iPhone to the EVO 3D) - I loved the phone but for 2 weeks I tried to live with the Data on Sprint and I just couldnt do it. I have been with Tmobile for 2 weeks and have had NO data issues and I do in fact get a data signal where my Sprint service got nothing (At the Hockey Rink / Etc). I have tested Edge (2G) speeds and they are still faster than what I was pulling from Sprint - So I was happy and so is my wife. I hated to drop the 3D phone, but I needed reliable Data.
Make sure you tell Sprint why you are leaving (if you do) - They argued with me that data is fine and I showed them speed tests on 3 of their phones at 120-175k (one was 1.5Mb, as they stated, but I showed them Wifi was on!!! - Disabled it and down the tubes it went). I then showed my Sensation to them and I was pulling 6Mb (around 6000k down and 2000k up) - They said, "Well, yeah, your bill will be higher" - I pay $5 less and I am on the 5GB plan - and I showed them Edge speeds with the 4G Disabled, where I would get unlimited, and they had no more comments.
Sprint sales people are great, I had no issues with them - but They need a HUGE upgrade to stay in this business.

Well for me in Indiana coverage is average with the other two big dogs. Sprint just flat out sucks. I switched from sprint to tmo and never looked back. Sim card based phone service. Better data speeds. More 3g and 4g towers by far.
As for Speed after data cap you go to 2g speed after you hit the cap. Which is way better then being totally cut off or paying overage. plus if Att and Tmo merger goes through the next gen devices will have an amazing coverage because the two network will eventually become one.
I'm down in Atlanta and been with tmo for many moons...I got the g2x and I will honestly say at times the network really bumps and hauls ass. There isn't many times ItS slow....
I usually use around 4-5 gb of data. N the one month I used 6.7gb they said I would b throttled but never was for the remaining week of the cycle..
But with.tmo it all depends on ur area..do ur research if it's not too late.

(1) Honestly tmobile coverage isn't the best. When you get coverage, it's very good (it's pretty good in Chicago). Your best bet is see if you have any co-worker at your workplace who uses tmobile and test.
(2) Edge speed. I signed up for 2GB. My normal usage is around 1GB (slightly below, my workplace has good wifi and I use wifi most of the time), and get close to 2GB if I use tethering a lot that month. 5GB is $10/month more expensive. Sign up for 2GB and pay $10 to switch to 5GB if you run over, and switch back to 2GB next month.

Internet simple mobile unlimited $40 plan on g2x is slower than edge..

I just switch to simple mobile today and got the $40 unlimited plan. Thought it was a great deal to save some $$$ every month. The Plan clearly mentions that users can get up to 3G speed depending on location and device. My location does have 3G network and the G2X supports the 3G bands as well. But still the speed gets capped at around 119KB/s when using the 3G/4G network. The speed here is actually slower than the 2G. I changed the settings and forced 2G and ran the speedtest again. Using edge i managed to get around 150Kb/s surprisingly.
This is not at all the plan as advertised. i think i will never get that up to 3G speed. Switching to straight talk does not help too as the G2X doesnt have the ATT 3G bands. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Same problem
I'm running EaglesBlood GB on my phone. When I use simple mobile i get 120kbps upstream and about the same downstream. I know its not the area since i drive a lot and tried it in three different cities. Now my wife has a 30 plan with tmobile. The one 1500min or text and 30 mb data. When i put her sim in my phone i get 3700 kbps downstream and 1250 upstream. I spent a while with SM chat people and so I know its not in APN settings. There has to be something else to be changed on the phone to get 3g. Would be nice if someone new what it is.
Simple actually caps your connection speed at 120kbps which is quoted as upto 3G speed.. Simple is mono of Tom and offer lot cheaper service.. They offer ****ty internet for $40 plan but if you go with $60 plan it's faster.
