Open running applications instantly?

Maybe a strange topic title but this is what I mean:
When I have PocketInformant running for example in the background, it opens instantly when it is selected from a TaskManager like pBar (wich I use). When I want to acces the programm using a normal shortcut from my startmenu it has some delay before it opens.
Does anybody have any tips or ideas about this?
You kinda answered your question yourself. If it running already it doesnt need to be loaded....

You are correct. But I wanted to know why a programm opens instantly when you open it using a task manager. While opening it using the StartMenu takes more time, In both cases the programms are already running in the background

I actually do understand your question because I noticed that too. When a program is alreading running in the background minimized and if you select it using a task manager of choice, it opens up quickly since it was just minimized where as if your where to go through programs menu and run the program shortcut again, there is some delay. I think it is because its closing the program or checking if it is already running that is causing the delay. Don't know for sure actually
i'm not sure if it works the same way as in desktop windows, but here it isl like that...
when you want to code a program that can be launched only once you put a specific section in program's startup part, that checks wether another copy of the process isn't already running, if no is found application starts normally, if it finds previously launched copy it terminates.
now i'm not sure how does it work here in wm5/6 as it happens with all the programs, so probably it is more os dependant, but if i'm right the delay comes from the fact that taping a shortcut actually runs the program again in the first place...
banannq is absolutely correct. This is how things work in WM as well.
When you click a link to the program or its exe file directly from file explorer it is launched again even if it is already running.
If this is a big app like Skype or PI it will take time just to load the exe so even if all it has to do is close right away there is still a delay.
The task manager however calls the program copy already running directly so there is no delay.
Thanks for the explanation!
Now I understand what was driving me mad
So opening programms from a TaskManager is the fastest way to work with you PPC. Or maybe run a today plugin that has a running programms line. I believe the O2 plugin has this kind of functionality.
WisBar Lite and MagicButton (both free) add a running programs icon list to the top menu bar so you can more quickly task swap.

I use pBar for this, works like a charm
The funny thing is - this is exactly the kind of thinking that brought M$ to create the ever so hated "smart minimize" concept and spawn a hoard of "close button / task manager" applications like magic button.
It is nice when programs start right away, but the trouble is RAM on WM devices is still stuck on at very low limit. Now, if we had devices with 256 or more MB of RAM we probably would not need to close apps.

[Q] removing programs - best way?

Hi - question from a WM newb.
[phone: HTC Fuze. Da_G 1.7 ROM]
What is the best way to remove programs?
I am aware there is a "remove program" function in the settings. Unfortunately, this seems to either:
a) be unable to remove certain programs
b) leave behind remnants of programs after it "uninstalled" it.
For example - I saw there was a google maps update out today which gives you street view. So I went to m.google.com/maps and installed it from there.
It seems to not have updated google maps at all which is what I was led to believe it would do but installed a whole new google maps (shows up as a "e" icon in my programs labeled "java". really annoying - what is that all about?).
I wanted to remove the old google maps and did so via the "remove programs" utility. It left behind the google maps icon which I just deleted from the windows/start menu/programs. I am left wondering though if I removed everything I could or if it left behind any mess that will slow and clutter my phone in the future?
I have searched and people seem to recommend SKtools to do this job. I was led to believe that it will do a better job but I am afraid it might mess with my registry - and registry tweaks seem to be the norm here (I've already done about a million).
Will SKtools leave my registry alone? Does it only remove registry enhancements that have to do with the program in question? Will altering even that mess with how other programs function? etc etc etc.
What is the best way to remove programs? (AND to remove programs that dont appear on the list like the "E" google maps thing)
thx much
the e icon is for the java emulator, the old version was a JAva one, this one is for Windows Mobile
that icon was created by Esmertic (the name of the java cemulator) for shortcut to Google Maps, else you'll have to go fireup the Emualtor first, then selct Google Maps from it
There are many tricks in SKTools, and yess it corrupts ur reg too, you just have to know what you doing..try PocketMechanic a shot too
hope this helps ya
Cheers
so is it pointing towards an online version of google maps or something, hence the reason why i cant find it to delete it in the first place?
thx
the one from "m.maps..." is a java version i guess, there is anew version in cab format here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=457376
awesome - thats what i was lookin for!
so if i delete that "e" icon will it be ok?

Is it not clear to you that you have two totally different versions installed? You have a native WM app installed and the Java applet version?
Is that what this whole question revolves around??
no thats pretty clear now hehe:
-original question remains: what is the best method of removing programs (stock "remove apps" vs using a program like sktools), i guess wondering if there is sort of a general consensus when it comes to this. (like on a mac I always use appzapper vs just throwing the app in the trash)
-I installed the native wm version and I want to get rid of the java applet version but I am not finding how to remove that version since it doesnt show up on the "remove apps".
thx
Apart from the problem of the "Google thing icon", I was very interested about input on "how to remove programs properly"...
I too am annoyed with the builtin "remove program" function not being able to uninstall anything completely.
Any hint (beside deleting everything manually in registry and file system) ?
Thanks for your help.

Uninstaller/uninstall???

Hi Everyone,
I have recently installed the .cab version 1.2.4 of Smart Protect to my HTC Touch HD, however when I came to uninstall it, which I tried by entering the password "123456" to the programs built in uninstaller, this was unsucessful as it gave me an error message.
So I went to settings, system, remove programs and tried from there (it didn't ask for a password). This cleared the application from the programs menu, although now when I start the phone it gives me an error securityservice.exe cannot start... or something along those lines.
Basically I'm just asking for an uninstaller/instructions to manually uninstall, here is a list of some of the processes that I believe this program might be using: rapiclnt, SmsCommand.exe, NK.exe BTW I dont know for sure but I've never seen these processes running before so I suspect that the program has not completely uninstalled. Also there are still some reg keys (which I dont want to remove without someone with more experience has told me its safe to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, ControlPanel, Security, SSecure.
Thanks in advance,
Grant.
P.S. I've also posted on the devolopers tread but i haven't had a reply so i guess that the thread is dead.
\windows\startup
and delete the shortcut to it
Thanks for the advice Should I delete the reg key that I talked about in my first post? Because it stores all of the Smart Protect settings, e.g partner number, app password(encrypted), partner name ect...
Again thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated.
Grant.

Lock screen Programatically in Windows RT

Dear Team
I am developing an application for Windows RT device. I have a requirement to programmatically lock
the device screen. I tried to log off with a solution posted in this link
to open the "cmd" prompt, but the cmd prompt executes within the sandbox of winrt and hence "shutdown /l" failed to execute due to
access denied(5).It is mentioned in the forum to give "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES" => FULL CONTROL. But in vain. Therefore I need solution either to lock the screen or open cmd prompt with required access.
with thanks
Sathia
Is this for a Win32 application that is compiled for ARM, or for a Windows Store application?
Windows Store applications don't have access to those APIs, which means anything that you run, runs in the same sandbox, and also doesn't have access (as you've noticed).
The only way to work around I think is to provide a separate lock screen inside your application. But it of course depends a bit on how you want to use it. If the goal is just to lock access to info in the app, that will work fine, but if you really need to lock the entire device, then I don't know...

Android emulator with push notifications and can be run on VPS

Hello all, got a rather unique question that I hope someone can shred some ideas.
What I am trying to do is the following:
1.) Run a particular android application that sends push notifications periodically.
2.) Convert the push notification into a CSV file and saved it in a Dropbox. folder. I can already sort of solved this via applications such as Automate, Tasker, Automagic, etc.
3.) Be able to run this application off an ANDROID EMULATOR installed on Windows and all ON a VPS.
One reason for running it on VPS is that I need this application with the push notifications to be "monitored" continuously for several hours a day, 5 days a week. It is EXTREMELY CRITICAL that I don't miss a single push notification from my end, so the VPS provides me with the guaranteed 99.99% uptime and is much more reliable than if were to run it off my own mobile phone. Another reason is that I will be using a VPS anyway to run another program (python FYI) that automatically reads the "CSV file" created from the push notification through Automate/Tasker/etc.
It is a unique situation, but I can't think of another way that could make use of the "text" from the push notifications received from this particular application. So any ideas would be great.
If all else fail, my fall back position is run it on a physical mobile phone, but I need to find ways to make sure it can achieve 99.9%+ internet uptime.
Thanks all!
