Raphael vs Universal - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hi!
I've been using my uni from the past couple years or more and am waiting to switch to the raph. I need to wait for another 15-20 days before i can get my hands on one (and thats killing me :-( ) and until I do, I was hoping that someone who's made the jump from a uni can shed some light on how it compares.
EDIT: Most importantly, can someone compare the two keyboards???
Cheers,
San

difficult....
The Universal keyboard is superb but bigggggggggggg.
I like the Raphael keyboard very much. Had a lot of problems with the TytnII. No numbers without the function key and easily I touched one of the hardware keys, entering in a menu etc.
This is all solved by the Raphael.
I may want to remap the sms and mail key in spacebar or so. I type them accidentally now and then, entering in those programs. But I can live with it
Huib

I also have a universal and have found no other phone that is as complete as it is 3+ years on from when I got it but with the extended battery pack on I am a little sick of the brick type comments I get and fancy a change.
However the limitations of the touch diamond mean I am only seriously considering the Touch Pro but the current £500 sim free price tag is too much - waiting for some decent conrtract deals..
Is the touch pro actually that much smaller than the universal in real world use? Anyone have any pictures of them side by side?
With a Windows 6.1 rom on (tomal!) the universal it really flies, does everything I need (apart from maybe HDSPA 3g occasionally) so if anyone has both it would be great to give us some comaparisons...

Much, much smaller. Nothing negative said about good old Universal.
But it comes with an extremely handly pouch that you can keep in your shirtpocket after having taken the Raphael out.
It is a small but very handy thing.
And you get a lot of extra tools, like GPS etc.
I also own a TytnII, and I miss some buttons, but this TouchPro ..... brrrrr.
I also believe that battery life in 3g mode is acceptable now. But I could not fully test it.
With both Universal and TytnII it was unworkable and I could only use GPRS/GSM to save battery live.
And GPRS and MSN MEssenger bite each other and were giving me many missed calls. Data and voice are impossible in GPRS mode.

http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/15733-HTC-Universal-vs-Apple-iPhone-vs-HTC-Touch-Pro

Thanks for the replies guys.
That sizeasy site is cool adamdon89 - I have bookmarked it
Minds made up - just need a decent offer on a UK contract now then!

If the picture doesn't do it for you, volume-wise, the Universal is ~275% the size of the Touch Pro. That is, grind some Touch Pros up (no, please don't actually try it!) and you could almost fit 3 Touch Pros in the space of the Universal.

thanks for your feedback guys!
can someone specifically answer on these lines, in comparison to a universal -
1. Overall device speed, through menus, launching proggies etc.
The uni is quite sluggish in my opinion....is the TP a lot more responsive??
2. Keyboard layout...
Minor changes, no windows key, no OK button.....does this feel like a huge loss in happiness?
3. Keyboard usability...
how does it really feel when compared to a uni's keyboard? The uni has a fairly large keyboard....now, using the TP, do you find it really hard to type on?
4. Is the OS a lot more stable?
I hope so! My Uni on wm6.1 is usually a nightmare....crashes atleast 5 times a day (i have a bad rom now i guess)
cheers & thanks again!
San

i had the Uni swapped it for a tytnII i wished i did't now i have the touch im happy again.
it is defently faster than my uni that ran wm6
the only complaint i had with the uni was its size, i find the touch just right.

Pointui ?? A new wm interface ?

Hey guys, dont know if anyone has come across this yet but for those who havent it looks like there may be a new interface for your wm device. Its called Pointui but as yet theres not a lot of info just a youtube vid and some screen shots on flicker, the web site just shows a countdown to what apperes to be the new year but by the look of the screens it might be something to keep your eye on
Youtube link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pUBWYErW3s
Flicker link :http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/
Web site :http://there-is-no-place-like-home.com/
I must say after having look at it, I'd be very intrested to try this out when its released. It looks very slick
WOW I'm surprised that there has been less buzz about this. I'm intrigued!
Yes, seems to be inspired by the iPhone but no proof to say its a Windows Mobile device?
Regards,
Carty..
If you click on the youtube uploaders username and look at the other vid you can see that its running on a Wizard
Wizard specs..
Processor: OMAP850 - 195Mhz
Memory: 128 MB of ROM and 64 MB of RAM
Should run fine on my Orbit !!
Interesting
Looks promising. I wonder if it is flash driven or C+ coded. A little strange how the video shows him sliding his finger to the right and the screen animation goes left?? That would drive me nuts!

...Also, you'll note very shortly into the demo the "Windows Mobile Settings" menu option...
I watched the video a couple of times and it seems to move very smoothly and quickly. I really like the way it works...........HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Thanks for the positive feedback. I'd say its more inspired by frustration of what I call Windows 3.11 Syndrome and poor excuses for performance because they have limited memory and slower cpus.
Never used an iPhone, sure looks nice. Not sure about user interaction consistency across all their apps which is something we hope to achieve with our framework.
Rest assured this is running on Windows Mobile. Unlike so many others we haven't forgotten those with Windows Mobile 2003.

Wow--amazing ui. I share your frustration with the Win 3.11 syndrome but I hate that other people keep using the iPhone comparison. The iPhone is like a new puppy--everyone loves it because it's cute and could do simple things (email, web, music, movies, pictures, oh calls too). After awhile, then what? Everyone here can name 100 things their PDA/Phone can do more than the iPhone--except on tiny little thing....and that's doing it with style! Swipe here, roll there, flip here, touch there, whatever which way.
Pointui will complete my PDA and will probably get more people to buy a Win Mobile device now that it's balanced with usability and functionality. Thanks, can't wait for Jan 1.
Dorothy, can you give us any idea as to when you'll be offering this up to the public, and are you planning this as a freeware app or will you be charging for use?
simplicity05, the answers to your questions can be found at there-is-no-place-like-home.com
I checked that just a few hours ago and all it had was a timer counting down to the new year haha!
Oh My God. This looks so freaking sweet!
Im sure you guys have clicked it but heres the link to the pointui main site http://www.pointui.com/
Says it will be available for download as soon as the clock from no place like home reaches 0. Wooo.
If it runs that fast on a 195mhz device, thats great news. All these iPhone clones run slow on my 247mhz orbit (overclocked) ... so, looking forward to this one.
Im back again
Just watched this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRw1T-N5dic
Seems it uses the standard WM phone pad, which sucks, hope they do there own phone pad/full phone system thing. Also, wonder how the text messages/email is handles, hopefully not the standard WM outlook??? Any guys in the know about this?
The scrolling/changing screens by sliding your finger seems counter-intuitive. I like how on my touch I grab and pull to the side of the cube I want, this Pointui looks like it is grab and push towards the place you want to go, very awkward...
Other than that, it looks very interesting!
Actually I think that scrolling the finger to go to the next screen is really sleek and intuitive.
And the speed is amazing! Really smooth, even on a Wizard! OMFG! These guys know how to program
From the screenshots and video I only miss some antialiasing on some text (top text saying "telstra", and some text on the initial screen), and it would be great to integrate further apps into Home, like the phone and messages (read, write, send).
I think this will be, again, one of those applications that disappoint the moment I press one of the "system menu" buttons and end up in the WM6 menu without any transition.
Becaus then, it just doesn't make any sense... Man, being all happy that you can go through the menu with your finger just to find out that if you REALLY want to make system changes you have to use the old stylus again sucks.
I think all the iPhone cloning is a massive backleash...

Kaiser or Cruise?

I am very confused reading all the foroums, both Kaiser and Cruise.
I really dont know which one to buy.
My only concern for Kaiser is its weight and thickness. I dont mind the lack of FM radio on Kaiser. But the keyboard is it really handy.
On the other hand can you really type on cruise without the keyboard?
Is there any difference on the screen. I mean, is the Screen of the Cruise more touch sensitive? Is the Cruise more responsive to finger tapping?
Also, Is there any difference using them in direct sunlight?
Apart from the keyborad and FM radio are there any other significant differences? The Cube u can also have on Kaiser.
Please advise
Thanks
I am a proud owner of TC. It is my first WM phone and if you ask me, go for TC. You can read the screens very clearly in deep sun shine, GPS is good. One big question is virtual KB or hard KB. I would say it would take couple of days to get used to virtual KB. After that it is cool. For me weight is a big factor.
Few things which i noted is the camera functioanlity. Its bit slow. Picture quality with no light just OK. But i dont use camera for taking pictures.
All in All I would say go for TC, it is handy, more powerful device than Kaiser...
I have neither but from what I want/need the Polaris is the one for me because:
1. I don't type more than 5 sms/emails a day on average and there are plenty of good on screen keyboards to choose from.
2. The touchflo on kaiser is software only whilst it's hardware on the Polaris like the original Touch (Elf).
3. Smaller and more pocket friendly.
4. Less professional looking or more stylish.
5. Screen is good under sunlight.
So in a nutshell, if you don't type much and want to use your fingers mainly with the device go for the Polaris.
it may just be me but i find typing using phonepad when it comes to sms's
alot easier then the still kinda tiny keyboard of the pdas well with keyboard
guess a touch dual with t9 would be even faster but then i dont type that many
sms's a day
and i like the specs of tc more then nike
and i like the size of tc better then i like kaiser
I had a Kaiser and am waiting for my TC. The Kaiser is a very good device. For me the weight was just too much to handle.
Well, for what it's worth, personally I really like the HTC keyboard with xt9. I can type much faster on it that most of the other onscreen keyboard I've tried. And for the first time in my life it actually felt really good (the typing) and getting near the experience of using a hardware keyboard.
Ofcourse it's still typing on a touch screen with no key feedback, but it does that very well. Needs a little bit of getting used to, but I type quite some text messages with it now. It's much much better than the standard keyboard that comes with WM, those small keys were just awkward even with a stylus.
Also the screen is quite good on the Cruise. Very sensitive as well (in a positive way!). Also looks good in sunlight. But the device gets fingerprints quite fast, but that is to be expected and no big deal. Could make it a little bit harder to see in direct sunlight, but a fast wipe with a cloth fixes that.
Also the weight is not that much at all. I expected the device to be more heavy and was surprised it was this light.
Hope this helps a bit . But don't forget, I'm biased! I already have a Cruise
Has anyone found any side-by-side photos of the kaiser and polaris?
'' The touchflo on kaiser is software only whilst it's hardware on the Polaris like the original Touch (Elf).''
Is it really a hardware difference of is it just a software???/

It's mainly a software issue. The only hardware difference is the type of the screen surface.

perfect! thanks what about depth-wise?
Had to add my two cents.
I found that the Kraiser is heavier than my 8525 but that also brings a sense of strudiness. I felt like i could drop the kaiser and not break it. I am in the same boat of chosing between either device. I also found that i can type fairly quickly with touchpal. Has anyone used it on teh Cruise. The only issue i have with it on my current device is the fact the the borders on teh phone get in the way of finger swiping. On the cruise the bezel is level with the screen right? its all a toss up. Can you live without a keyboard. Other than that i havent touched a cruise.
Does anyone know of a US availblty or carrier?

Touch Cruise touch-keyboard layout

Hi everybody,
I got my Touch Cruise and I think it's a great device. The "new" touch-keyboard is neat, but I would like to use a different layout like on this screenshot:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I think this layout is by default in the system, because it started it when I was asked to type my WLAN password. After I did it, this layout "disappeared" and I can't get it to show up again.
So where is the magical switch to use this layout?
Thanks in advance.
I wanted to use the SIP you mention above as well, but was unable to find a way to select it. I'm not sure why it's not an option in the HTC rom, but it is disappointing.
This is not a solution to your question, but maybe something useful anyway:
Have you looked into PocketCM Keyboard? it is a great option and I love it when used with the iPhone skin developed by 2manyphones.
If you decide to try this, you will need to install sipchange by sleuth225 which will allow you to keep PocketCM as your default SIP even after a soft reset.
Hope this helps - and if you figure out how to get the orginal HTC qwerty, let us know!
I have fallen for CooTek's TouchPal Pro. You can use it in predictive text mode or precise entry. It also has a boat load of useful features like input strings (ie. www.<site>.com), a resizeable input panel, and many others.
I have used Resco Keyboard Pro (V3) and PocketCM (with iPhone skin). TouchPal pro is by far the best and most polished solution (IMHO).
This layout appears when you enter passwords or URL's etc, but yes, don't think you can select it as a main SIP even with a sip changer.
I don't like it as a normal keyboard anywys, you have to press the stupid symbol button to get a period.
Hi,
I´m using the PocketCM Keyboard from here , which is close to perfect.
You really might want to take a look at that, especially with the available Touch-skin.
edit: btw the ContactManager itself is very good too.
oh, and hello to everyone..
Thanks for all the replies, I'll look around.
Cheers.
Touch Cruise Keyboard
Hi there, i tested the Touch Cruise aka Xda Orbit 2 today.
I love this keyboard from the Cruise and wanna get it for my HTC Touch.
Is there a .cab, i can get, please?
Thx a lot!
i absolutely hate the touch cruise's SIP with teh XT9 crap
that thing is the devil reincarnated i swear
i have never actually seen the one in the screen shot at the beginning of this post tho..weird
i'm gonna try touch pal, thanks for the suggestion...btw hi everyone im new here too i just bought a touch cruise last week..upgraded from an htc apache
It must be possible to use this layout as a standard. But I don't know how. But I think it should be possible by editing the registry.
Has anyone a clue how to do this?

I'm using PocketCM, which is ok. Think I will try some of the other ones to see if they're any better. Some ppl swear by them on here. It's just annoying when you have Opera 9.5 and the stock HTC keyboards don't work. So you try and select the pocketCM keyboard but just pulling up the input changer menu takes like 5 secs (see the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=375260 post by another user). then when the menu finally shows up and I select pocketCM and it brings up the crappy default windows qwerty keyboard. i have no idea why it does that. sometimes i'll get lucky and it will actually show the pocketCM keyboard. and if I do get the pocketCM keyboard, then that one leaves a space between every character. it's all very annoying and confusing as you can see. either way I've never seen the keyboard in the first screenshot.

Yardie V4 Rom.....What ch'all want???

OK, so thanks to all who have tried my ROMs and left me feedback and an especially big thank you to those of you who have donated to my beer fund!!!! But what i wanna do now is throw it open to y'all! Lots of people have asked for this and that adding or removing, it's been impossible to keep up with! So what i want, is for y'all to use this thread to tell me what tweaks/programs etc you all want, please do not ask for radios though as obviously they all work different around the world, my Rom will ship with whatever radio i feel is best for my locality and battery life! Also DO NOT ASK FOR ANYTHING THAT INFRINGES COPYRIGHT.......It will be a waste of your time!!!!!
My initial thoughts are to drop the D3D drivers for now as they slow down the screen rotate too much, other thoughts are to drop TCPMP for you tube player and add music ID, possibly a couple more coffee break games. Would also like to add manilla 2D(But a couple of issues to sort with it first!)
So let me know!!!
Add-on for Yardie Rom
I would like to cast a vote for the Raphael Keyboard (unless there is a working version of the Opal Keyboard released before the Rom is made.)
Thanks!!!

i agree with the raphael keyboard, haven't seen the opal keyboard. SJ's HyperDragon PRO Manilla 2D runs flawless so I would like to see that in the ROM. Also, the youtube application is the best i've used hands down. BeeJive compatability is a must but other than that i can't think of anything else.
Hi yardie,
Ive been a big fan of your roms. Just wanted to add somethings id love to see in them.
1 - The action/quick menu tab in place of the calender tab on the bottom left soft button.
2 - The long press keys for power/send/end
3 - Not a big deal, but a few new games would be nice
4 - Not sure if you would be able to because its only beta, but adding in skyfire browser, or if not maybe opera, as PIE is terrible and slow.
I personally like a real full rom, the more programs on it the better, as long as you can maintain good speed.
As long as you can add some of the recommendations, but still keep up the speed as you have done, I will be sold!
Thanks again.
IMHO I like more a very light and clear merged ROM (Kaiser/Raphael), newest build with so less as possible apps. Contains only essential apps as:
- Standard WM (eg Office, Outlook, QuickGPS, Camera, Symbol Pad)
- 3D drivers of Samsung Omnia
- Flash 3.1
- MS_NETCF
- MS_SQL_CE_MOBILE
- ESMERTEC_JBED
- Hou Ming FileExplorer extension is handy but not necessary
The rest should be installable by users. Changed icons are nice, but not too blinky or full change. It looks not clear and I've been in the situation I couldn't find the apps immediately, I had to look twice.
Standard theme: I like the looks of your previous ROM

hey yardie,
Here's my input:
1. Stick with the media versions, I personally prefer these (DiamondMedia lol), and love yours.
2. Stick with 3.29, it's very stable and I've never had your ROM crash on me
3. Manila2D is cool, but so is HTC Home IMHO. I'm fine with either one.
4. For Beejive compatiblity, you might want to take a look at this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2581946&postcount=1
5. I prefer YouTubePlay over the new Youtube application, for speed and stability, and its extremely lightweight and has more options
6. I suggest taking a peek at AdvanedConfig 3.2's .xml files, it has some VERY useful Registry edits
7. I prefer 19588 and some newer builds rather than the standard shipped one
8. Please keep your current theme, I love it!
9. For me, I like light ROMs, but also like ROMs that are completely functional out-of-the-box. This means that I really like to keep the base clean, but I also don't like to have the user add millions of .cabs to get it the way they want it
10. In case you are deciding to place opera in the ROM, I would highly NOT recommend it. It takes up about 10 MB cooked in and around 4-5MB in .cab form
That's about it,
good luck on your next release man
EDIT: Please elaborate further on this "slowing the screen rotation down too much" because I'm not having many problems with a ported XIP and SYS with the Samsung Omnia drivers, but would like to hear your input on the subject

Q: smallest available Windows Mobile phone ???

I need a second phone, I want it to have windows mobile, and I want it very very small.
Requirements: small size, touchscreen, small size, windows mobile, and small size
Any suggestions ???
Thanks !!
PS: It MUST be VERY small
Go to this page, and input your desired specifications. Hit "Start", and look at the results. In my test search for a device like the one you requested, I checked "Mini Device", set "Operating System" to "Windows CE", checked the box that says "Integrated Cellular Phone", and set "Pos. Device" to "Touchscreen". Searching with those terms should return devices that match what you want. Hope you find what you're looking for.

Actually that was the last page in my browser before hitting the "new thread" button here @ the "ole trusted" xda-devs forums
Yes, tech specs can be compared there, but the in-hand feel of a given device is somehow subjective (slim and not tall, but wide, vrs a small foot print front-looking thicker device, etc), so I wanted to hear some user oppinions
Thanks anyway !!
Will keep searching, and will take your advice regarding those parameters
I think the HTC Niki was quite small with a 2.6" screen, but the sliding keyboard might make it a bit fat.
Isn't the Diamond 1 small enough???

Yes, it definitely is the smallest one. Unfortunately also regarding the battery. With 900mAh it is way to little.
the diamond 1 is a very good device and its small the only thing bad about it is the crap CPU , it become hot when charging or playing with the phone and its also slow, in other word 528mhz FAKE
HTC Touch Cruise 09 is also the best qvga windows mobile out there
Pantech has a tiny phone
I think the Pantech Matrix Duo is a tiny WinMo phone, about the smallest I've seen, but I'm also pretty sure that it's not touchscreen. You can see more on it at the AT&T site, which is where I found it at.
thanks to all for your suggestions and comments
Maybe the Neonode N2 is the smallest one? Last week i saw a new one at ebay.de from a powerseller for 69,90€ (buy it now). It has a 2" touchscreen.

HTC Jade
Try Jade. Its small and pocketable. I have it for almost a year now.

Maybe the Neonode N2 is the smallest one? Last week i saw a new one at ebay.de from a powerseller for 69,90€ (buy it now). It has a 2" touchscreen.

are you sure that the n2 runs windows mobile?
Japp I think so, because this is what you can read on several pages:
http://www.neono.de/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neonode#N2_Facts
http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/neonode-n2-black-unlocked/4505-6452_7-32815659.html#cnetReview
Some Pages say it has WinMO 6.0 Pro and some say it has Windows CE. On youtube you can find videos which shows the Windows CE Interface.
