I want to know why so many people are up for spending $1000 on a phone? Just wondering. I mean I've asked this before, but I wanted to make a thread. Do you all just earn too much money? Are single? College students? Have cash lying around? I mean I paid $300 for my AT&T tilt and I thought that was a lot.
Kraize
I have not yet bought it, but I may do so soon.
I do not earn huge amounts of money, but i do know how to save up for events like this. I dont spend my money on lots of little stupid things, instead i spend my well earned money less often, but on something very worth while.
Some people spend what seems like little amounts of money every day or week on things like cigarettes, junk food, alcohol, etc. This all adds up.
Or every few months on a cheap phone, cheap electronics, etc.
Whereas i will buy one good expensive phone or other gadget that i have researched well. I.e. average joe buys 100 euro phone, 6 months later, 250 euro phone, 4 months later 200 euro mp3 player, and so on, also spending 100 or so a week on things that id call a waste of money, while i buy one 600 euro phone that'll last me a year or two or three.
Also, these WM smartphones lose their value slowly. The Touch Pro will still sell for a good sum in a few months even second hand. The TyTn II still goes for about 300 on ebay. I buy the Touch Pro now for 600, in a year I sell the Touch Pro for 400 say, and buy another 600 euro phone. In 12 months I've spent 400 euro in total while owning the latest and greatest.
I've been a smartphone user for years. I still have a Audiovox SMT5600, that I'd still probably be using if it weren't for the fact that it's only tri-band GSM and I took a job in Scotland, and my company SIM is now Vodaphone. So, I bought a Vox a year ago for the quad band. I've fallen in love with the slideout keyboard, but I always wanted GPS. I'm really waiting to see about the tri/quad band GSM on the Touch Pro, otherwise I might go SE X1.
I too do not upgrade very often. I'm still using a 5 year old Sony 3.2 MP camera. I've taken over 5000 photos with it. I do a lot of research and spend money for the long run. I see the Touch Pro as just that. Lots of features that can be used for the long run. The TP has a long list of features I like, but here are some of the highlights. I like the micro SD slot so I can add more storage as cards become available. I like that it has a 3.1 MP auto-focus camera with flash. I like the GPS and accelerometer as I think a lot of applications in the future will use these. I like the keyboard. I like that the TP has video out cabability and that there is a forward facing camera. I'm ready to go to a WM Professional as it has more software potential than than the Smartphone OS. I like that there are so many people on XDA-Developers that are smart enough and kind enough to share and to unlock a lot of the features that are built in but unavailable without cooking. I'm hoping that the TP will be able to be upgraded to WM7 when it's available. I'll probably get the Vodafone version of the Touch Pro sometime before Christmas as an upgrade, so that will reduce the price some.
well i think the question is more geared toward people who already have a kaiser..like people who spent 400-500 for the kaiser when it first came out and then 1-2 years later spending another 500 - 1000 for an upgrade that pretty much does the same thigns but just slight improvements..i can see someone forking out alot ona new device thats new in al aspects to a new user but i think people forking out the 1000 just to get an upgrade is rediculous...ill just wait till its here in the su and i can buy it on craigslist brand new like i did with my tilt i had an 8525 which i got for 300 brand new on craigslist and ended up selling it about 6 months later for 280 and buying a tilt for 350
Well, because it kicks ass like this gif???

No, honestly... the last time I bought a PocketPC (in 2004) I also paid about €600. WindowsMobile was/is not meant to be a cell phone OS in the first place. It simply is much more regarding a mobile OS (and hopefully WM7 will finally achieve to differ from the continous "patch it to match it" strategy that MS has been following the last years regarding WM). If you look at the things you can do with a WM device and the software available it is not as limited as some of the cell phones out there... anyways, you can argue that there are cell phones or even other PPCs that can do the same for less.
But well, that is what you have to pay to have it all... all the latest technology squeezed in that "brick". The iphone 3g is not available for much less if you get it unsubsidized...
So why am I buying a Touch Pro?
Because it is the first cell phone/PocketPC in years that finally seems to be able to deliver all that I am currently expecting to have in one package with almost no compromises...
Because my phone is the gadget I use most ofter, I have it around me 24/7 wherever I am, and I use it for lots of different things. I type much more SMS than make calls, so I decided I want a physical keyboard. But at the same time I really hate those monsters like Blackberries and Nokias, I want something small.
And if you think $1000 a lot, you should pay a visit to Brazil. Not only we pay around 70% of what we earn in taxes, a Tytn II here costs $2000. A decent notebook costs $5000. A Honda Civic costs $40000+.
My current phone costed me $800, and it's a crappy Motorola one running Linux.
Touch Pro probably won't be released here for at least 6 months, so I will be very happy buying it for $1200 on the gray market.
Im buying one as it ticks all of my boxes, I just sold my Athena as I was dissilusioned by how poor it was with win video playback and it's use with orb aswell as it's lack of ability to handle the internet properly. I flogged it on ebay and purchased an oqo 01+ ( for those that dont know it is a full windows xp laptop the same size as an athena/ameo ) it is excelent for video and internet, so now your asking what has this got to do with the raphael, well the oqo is a laptop not a phone, so my next phone has to
1) Be a modem preferably as fast as possible
2) Run tomtom because satnav for win xp truly sucks
3) Have a keyboard for easy texting
4) Have wifi so I can use wm wifi router for fullspeed modem use (bluetooth limits at 1Mbps but the raph can run at 7Mbps)
5) Have vga because I hate qvga res i need more screen space
6) Has to be small and pocketable, I already have a miniature laptop on me I dont need two bulky devices
I am going to upgrade to it though, through T-Mobile.
Your assumptions in the first post kinda fit me apart from the college student part lol
I wouldn't say I earn too much money either, about average wages for my area anyway. I am single though, I'm still living with parents and yeah, I basically have a lot of spare cash
5 reasons...
1. It best meets my top 20 list of mobile device hardware/software specifications.
2. I want to silence every Apple iPhone, Samsung i900 OMNIA, Nokia N96, Sony Xperia and Samsung INNOV8 owner...when they all come out!
3. I have several folks dying to buy my TyTN II.
4. I just got my GOVERNMENT STIMULUS CHECK.
5. THE WIFE said I could get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't make a ton of money (just left IT job to go back to grad school), but will get enough use of the pro to warrant the price. I also keep tech for a while (still have my SE P810i) and am willing to buy with contract, so my price/time used should be fairly low.
Features that grabbed me:
* KB -- I'll be typing short descriptions and strings of numbers out in the field and don't want to have to bring my Fujitsu T2010 tablet all of the time.
* Vid Out -- for presentations
* microSDHC -- already have a handful of 8gb cards I use with my nav unit and mp3 player
* wifi/3g -- quick speeds for checking email, sending field data out, input data into web app/db
* WM OS -- hoping to be able to remote desktop occasionally. would love to be able to run local wamp setup (yes, I'm a dreamer), good opportunities for 3rd party apps, utils, cooked rom's, reg hacks, etc.
* improved interface and speed for general pda use (contacts, todo lists, calendar, etc.)
I expect to pay significantly less than $900 with 1-2 yr contract and use the phone daily for multiple activities for 2 years. Not pricey at all imo.
As far as justifying the cost goes I guess I look at what I can sell my previous phone for and factor that into the equation too, I currently have a p3600 which is worth a few hundred at least so that brings the cost down and in my mind I know that if I bought a cheaper phone I would just want to change it earlier, my p3600 lasted 2 years wheres I've had some boring sonyericsson phones and nokias and never kept them for more than a year.
Be carefull
The good:
What's in my pocket? Not "just a phone"..... but a full featured stylish miniature PC with high speed internet connectivity and very good multimedia capabillities, available anywhere - anytime For me it's a good investment, use it for business an leisure...
The bad:
My wife understands me..... now she wants her own.... My kids think it's cool and asked if they can have one too....

Rofl. I don't think you'll fork $4k+ xD Just get it yourself haha.
Well. Anyone want to give a 15year old ideas on how to buy the Touch Pro? I won't get my upgrade till next year The max my tilt will sell for is about $300-$400. And it's fulled with garmin and loads of other crap I bought :S any suggestion? Where's a good place to get a job for a 15 year old? mall? store? I don't have a lot of time in my day >.> I do a lot of community crap and school takes a well amount of time My parents won't fork even half it's price >.> We're not rich, but my dad think's the Touch Pro is just a waste of money T.T Any suggestions folks? I think the best idea would be to get a job...if I could find one =/
Why I bought one
$950 for Touch pro minus ~$400 for my Tilt on eBay minus $200 towards new phone by my office. So I figure I'll be spending about $350 on my phone all together. If I wait until AT&T version is released, my Tilt will be worth much less (in psychology this is the maladaptive behavior called rationalization). Enough to justify this purchase, not really, but I really, really want it
In my opinion its the same reason people buy bently's over ford Focus's
The htc touch pro is the Bently of phones.
Everyone wants the latest and greatest.
People spend millions of dollars on things that become obsolete within a few year.. I.E. Computers
Everyone just wants the best.
Thats how i look at it.
And thats what makes the world go around.
I am a freelance computer technician and a college student. So I travel a lot from place to place and need to get as much work as possible on the go. And so the Touch Pro fits the bill perfectly.
For me I want something that does it all in one device. I'm starting my new job in September and having this would really help with the organising of my department and my life. Also it looks really cool and I always go for the alternative product, I've never bought anything that's apple and never will because they are not good and I can't wait to show it off to my friends who are against anything that's not Sony Ericsson and like what someone else said I want a phone that I do not need to upgrade for every year and doesn't depreciated quickly and constitutes me changing from a 12 month contract to a 18 month one.
The features speak for themselves. I can't wait to buy one as I'm waiting for the T-mobile variation so that I can get a good deal.

Now thats funny!
I got free tytnII on contract. sold it for £335, so only have to find £150 for this really.
I buy is because it is easier to take a Pocket PC on tour than separate phone, mp3 player and laptop. I don't really like risking my laptop in our crappy tour van - it's too easy to steal or break.
Hi everyone.
I'm a long time lurker - few times poster and I work as an IT-consultant. Don't make a whole lot of money but on the other hand - I'm a workaholic so I don't have much free time to spend money on.
- I havn't got the Raphael yet either, but as soon as the Swedish version comes around - I will.
The reason is this; It got everything I'm looking for.
I've been using about 10 PDA's and WM devices through out the years and when I got my first VGA device I was hooked!
Two years passed until the first decent VGA phone arrived: The HTC Universal which I carried (or draged) with me for 1½ years until I realized that - it's just to damn heavy.
So I peeked at the Eten Glofiish X800 - but after the bad reviews I finally decided on a TyTN II. It was a really hard decision to let go of the VGA screen but I finally went for smaller size and GPS.
Since then that I've used the Keiser I've really felt that the lack of VGA screen has made my work more dificoult since one of the things I used to do is to connect to my clients servers through RDP - which is almost impossible when you only have quarter the resolution.
So to sum up, A small device with VGA, GPS and keyboard, what more can you ask for?

I am in the market for a new phone(we are switching from Sprint to AT&T) mainly because of dropped calls and no service in many areas with Sprint. I have decided I am either getting the AT&T Tilt or the Apple iPhone. I will explain my usage habits and hopefully you readers can help me decide which one would be best for me.
I am a commuting college student who works part time. The degree I'm working on is in Computer Science. I get wi-fi access at work, school, and home. I still live with my parents and have two jobs. I am contributing 30% of one of my jobs' paychecks to a 401k and am about to make a large one-time investment into a Roth IRA for retirement. I have a good bit of time imbetween classes and it would be nice to have something to do either for fun or productivity. I will be getting $5/mo phone insurance with whichever phone I get. Another plus would be an easy-to-use calendar so I can get rid of my paper calendar. Using the T9 texting method to enter things into my current phone for the calendar function is just too tedious, so I don't even use it.
Apple iPhone:
-Nice touch screen interface
-Very intuitive and easy-to-use
-Good battery life
-Internet access should be easier to use than with tilt due to interface
-App store makes finding new applications much easier
-Can use one-handed
-Multi-touch technology
-Ambient light and proximity sensors
-It would be nice to have something in my life that "just works" without hours of tweaking
-Required to pay $30/mo for a data plan
-Phone Cost $200, Data plan $30/mo*2 yrs=$720, Final cost 2 yrs $920
AT&T Tilt:
-External keyboard
-Could take notes in class with Microsoft Office and an external bluetooth keyboard(wouldn't have to lug around my laptop or as many spiral notebooks)
-Okay battery life
-Could use wifi and not have to pay $30/mo for internet access
-Can take videos
-Many complain it's more of a two-handed phone
-Sucks at playing videos or gps navigation due to driver issue htc will not fix
-Takes time to learn to use
-If purchased, I would not get a data plan, although it would be nice to have internet anywhere, it's not necessary
-Phone cost $150(refurb) $300(new), Final cost 2 yrs $150, if there's a problem because it's refurbished after 3 months, $125 extra(insurance deductible)
Both have:
-Phone
-Music device
-Accelerometer
-Slide to unlock(could be downloaded for Tilt)
Other points:
-I know it may be going out on a limb saying this, but the iPhone is going to cost me $645-$770 more in the 2 years that I'd have a contract for it. Internet access anywhere would be nice, though(especially on vacation, long drives, and waiting).
-The refurbished tilt is currently "temorarily out of stock." I think it'll probably come back in though. If not, it'd cost me $300, making the iPhone $495-$620 more over the 2 years I'd have it under contract.
I know all of my information is a bit strown about, but which phone do you guys suggest I purchase and why?
Tilt. Because.
i don't think the tilt has an accelorometer... never had or played with a tilt, but i'm pretty sure it doesn't
I have been contemplating getting an I-phone because the newer version is very nice and since you only pay $30 for internet, I would interchange the sims and use the internet on my tilt. The tilt does ahve video but it usually sucks along with the camera unless you have the ideal lighting... The I-phone is limited in what is does such as taking pictures and sendign it to friends. Your friends have to log online just to see your photos. It's pretty sad... However even though the I-phone is limited, what it does do; it does very well. The MS office suite is very nice and has helped me out numerous times during college as well as the WiFi. So my bottom line answer is this. If you want to use it for work, business, college then I would go with the Tilt or even a newer version such as the diamond and use a different Rom. For fun I would go with the I-Phone. The downside is that you cannot change roms though. It is almost like getting a new phone everytime you put a new rom onto your Tilt which is still not utalizing all the drivers at this time. Thanks to the hard working people in in these forums, that is close to being changed. I hope this helped.
tilt...
only cause its the balls!
With the iPhone, what you see is what you get. It works very well, but everything comes from Apple.
The Tilt can do virtually anything. It may get buggy sometimes, but pretty much, if you can think it, you can do it.
honestly?
iphone.
tilt's old.
now if you ask "diamond or iphone", you know my answer.
Thanks for the insight guys. I decided to go ahead and get the iPhone simply because it'd be nice to have something that "just works," not to mention I don't have the time to mod it the way I want it. After running several linux servers and desktops, some of you may see where I come from(where nothing ever works like it should!). I ordered the iPhone from the AT&T store(business account, can't use apple store) and they said they'll email me when it arrives in 7-10 days.
It would have been nice to be able to get a wireless keyboard and type notes on my phone like I could have with the Tilt, but I think for a phone the iPhone fits my needs better. If I had the time, though, I'd get the Tilt in an instant. I'll probably be buying an Asus EEE for note typing so I don't have to carry my 15" laptop or a bunch of notebooks around all day.
This reply might be a bit late ... but ... what about the Touch Pro?
never heard of the touch pro until you just said something about it.. too expensive anyway though since it won't be subsidized by the cell carrier for a service contract
I think mobile computing got a kick in the ass witht he release of the Apple iPhone. Microsoft and Palm beat Apple to the punch but Apple made it a lot easier and more friendly to use. if you would like to comment on any funny, sad, or a review of your device, post them here.
i will get the ball rolling... I own a Windows Mobile 5.0 powered device that i purchased back in december 2007 as a christmas present to myself. i won my device at auction in spite of the condition it was in. the mic is broken so i have to use my bluetooth earpiece to make phone calls. the device itself was in ok shape (i added some more body damage to it. but nothing major). i was always skeptical about smartphones and such. i test drive the iphone and liked it but expensive. the phone i currently use was not expensive at all (again with its defects). i overlooked all those and saw the potential my phone had. it is an ETEN G500 in case any readers were wondering. Being in college, my phone made my life a lot easier and being connected everywhere made me rethink my position and now i am all about my phone. Since it is GPS enabled with one of the best chipsets out on the market (SirfStarIII), i can go anywhere i want. it blew me away after i got it to work with TomTom 6 software. i am late to the game with smartphones and such but i did my thorough research before i made an offer on ebay, where my phone came from. i am glad i never regretted purchasing it at all. having a device that can compete with todays devices made me take even more pride in my phone. i don't care if it is bulkier and heavier. for my phone being relatively old since it is an '05/'06 phone. it is far from being obsolete by my standards. once i get enough money together i will upgrade to a better one, but for now, my phone i konw will last me another few years at least.
one success story i would like to share. i was with a friend and he needed some books to help him with a paper for a class. we were in borders store and he bought the first book ($20) b/c of the amount of info it had. the second book he was gonna buy had some info (a lot nonetheless) that was missing from the first book he bought. So he took my phone and typed all the info he needed in Word Mobile. After he was done, i sent it to him through e-mail on the spot and he was able to retreive it and open the document with no problems at all. i saved him $30 (which what the price of the second book) and helped him get a good grade on his paper.
there you have it. i maybe just obsessive with my phone, but i feel like with situations like this, my phone came in handy. i am a technology fanboy, not a microsoft, and not an apple fanboy. But, having a pocket pc/phone powered by microsoft certainly helps a lot especially in a school setting.
Tell me about your stories!
I use my device as a flashlight almost everyday thanks to VJCandela. It also does everything I need and if it doesn't I just have to install some software and it will. It's highly customizable, allows for countless mods and not anyone has one.
With affordable data plans coming to Canada there will be even more features unlocked on my phone like instant Wikipedia access, on-the-go blogging...
Unlike the almost obsolete PalmOS, Windows Mobile is here to stay.

In my opinion with HTC releasing the Touch HD just around the corner, the TP will be outdated and the prices will take a hit. As for the 3g iPhone, it is still the phone to beat especially with all the apps that are being released for it lately plus I dont see a price drop coming within the near future on the blackmarket for these devices since the only other way to get one is thru ATT and a ridiculous plan and 2 year contract.
My $0.02
Cheers!
and the fact that the iphone is overhyped.
meaning, even the stores had plenty of them in storage but they where only to be sold a few on a day (creating a hype).
if you write a problems over the iphone, most of the time you get sabered down by iphone lovers.
iphone is not sold for tweakers.
ppc is tweakable, and you can write down youre problem if you find any.
not that i am trying to put the iphone in corner.
i don`t own one.
and i like the looks, and how fast it works (tried it in the store).
i guess you have to find out yourself.
maybe try to swap with youre friend for a week for testing.
ooh and did i mentioned that i like it that wm isent the only phone OS on the market.
i welcome the idea of google`s android operating system.
thank you guys for your input. anyone else?
The the iPhone 3G is approx $6-700, the TP is about $900.
But over a 2 year contract, the iPhone will probably retain its value better than the TP (namely because Apple releases only one phone a year, while HTC is continually making better and better products).
Of course it also depends on if both are unlocked; if you're forced to use AT&T (or if you really need US 3G) then there's no clear winner since you'll end up paying a lot more for the plan itself.
Otherwise I would say the biggest consideration is what kind of smartphone user you think you are. If you have no problems with using iTunes and Apple's walled garden called the App Store, then the iPhone is a fair choice. But if you're a DIYer and have no problems copying files and making some registry edits, you'll find WinMo much more empowering.
Of course you should definitely also consider your warranty, insurance and replacement options. What will you have to do to get the 3G replaced versus the TP? Etc.
If you want a no-nonsense opinion, I'd say stick with the TP. We're only getting started here at XDA, and the TP has nowhere to go but up in terms of its software. The bulk of what the iPhone has to offer is already on the table, and will probably slow down once developers jump ship to Android. But that's only my opinion
i own both, what do u basically use your phone for? for a normal phone, iphone is great, top of everything, and for multimedia, it's still the phone to beat. and like said, it's fast, and very fast, Apple doesn't need to tell how it works, but watching movie is very pleasant compared to TP, despite the latter has more resolution to the screen.
anyway, if you really need a WM device, stay with TP, and like said before, it's tweakable, whereas the most you can do with iphone is jailbreaking to let other cracked 3rd party applications and games to be applicable on your iphone. not a straight through way to install anything you want.
I hate IPhone, apart from a massive screen & some eye-catching animation it has nothing else to offer and cummon, if u talk about speed, I have tried both IPhone & TP over 16mg Wifi and they both load a page almost within in same time.
How can you even call IPhone a smart phone??? It doesn't even have the basic functionality that a mediocre s60 has...
Hi guys.
Currently i walk around with a G1 in my hands. It's rooted with the latest jf version. I've had this phone since it came out and i like. Now here is where things are getting tricky. Two months ago, i received a promotion at work. I am now the administrative assistant at my company. I know people say that is just a glorified secretary but definitely not the case here. I run projects for my boss analyzing the amount of business we bring in and which one of our competitors is taking away our business. i tend to us Microsoft outlook daily alon with word, excel and powerpoint. (me and access can't get along). My sweet, sweet g1 is not up to snuff. It's a cool phone, but for what i'm doing, it lacks the software and syncability i need. (prove me wrong on this one if you can).
So, to all at xda, i'd like you to point me in the right direction for a true business phone. The is no limitation on provider, at most 300 dollars (before rebate and with a new customer 2 year plan with a provider other then T-mobile). I have to be able to edit and view Microsoft documents. A good amount of internal memory or an expandable slot. A physical keyboard. I need a proverbial work horse who when i say jump, ask me how high. Now any suggestions don't necessarily have to be out now. if there is a great phone coming out within 2 months (like the touch pro 2), i can wait. But i can't wait past august 15th. guys, i really need your help with this one. I just don't have time to go around and test so many phone. I like to run a potential phone through it's paces for 4 days before i decide on keeping it(love t-mobile for letting me do that. one week i tested the slide, blackberry curve, pearl, wing and dash) So guys please, help me out. Thanks
sidenote- why do phone company's want to make a cell phone so much like a laptop, Why not make a small laptop that can make phone calls. most professionals today carry briefcases and bags and push come to shove, they can use bluetooth.

sidenote- why do phone company's want to make a cell phone so much like a laptop, Why not make a small laptop that can make phone calls. most professionals today carry briefcases and bags and push come to shove, they can use bluetooth.

Take a look at the HTC x7510
Dirk
thanks
thank dirlan. If i could find that for 350, i'd be very happy. But the 899 price tag i see floating around is just killing me.

Very sad you live in the US In Europe , the boss would be the one that pays for it ...
Dirk
would go for the touch pro, very comfortable phone with its 5 row keyboard imo and not very expensive, or wait for the touch pro 2. The main problem with the tp2 is that its very big. big and expensive. Besides the winmo phones, the only other option would be a blackberry, like the curve. Since you already tested it, you got to decide yourself which platform is the one of your choice ;-) blackberries are usually easier to get along with but by far not as powerful as the winmo devices But blackberries run muuuch longer on battery power, if thats necessary to you.
Sidenote: To get a nice office suite for blackberries, theres no way around but to pay for one. Only readers are included. Thats an advantage with winmo ;-)
I had a Blackberry Curve and Flip, and have now switched to a Touch Pro and Touch HD. Battery life is good enough, but not nearly as comfortable as with the bbs. But I really love the devices in terms of expandability, thats why I would never trade them back in - but thats not a reasonable factor if you havent got time to mod and tune your device
Bought the G Tablet from Sears. Used both TNT and Vegan. After so many tweaks got the market and most of the apps to work, BUT there was always an issue with something.. and always something else needed to be tweaked.. After losing sleep over it and spending endless hours, I realized it was not worth the effort for some of the following reasons...
There are some tablets that you don't have to spend all this effort to get the full market.
There are (or will be soon) tablets you can dial out with sim card, or have built in data card if you wish.
Used the Samsung Galaxy (Verizon) for few days and quality was noticeable. you pay $200.00 more BUT everything works... Confirmed with Verizon, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET THE DATA PLAN. (which by the way starts from $20 a month, and it is month to month with no contract, if you chose to get it).
You can get a part time job on the amount of time you spend to get this stupid device to work (at the end it does not.. at least not fully functional) and probably make enough $ to buy a brand new galaxy and more...
So.. I gave up and returned mine... It is really not worth my time... Those you like to play and hope to get this working.. good luck..
Wrong forum... But to me it is worth it. Sorry it isnt for you.
Why do people think the Galaxy Tab is only a little more money?
It's not $200 more. It's $200 more at the start, plus the cost of a data plan. I personally think the Galaxy Tab is ridiculously expensive, over time. If I had to choose between only that or a WiFi iPad, I'd just buy the iPad.
Yes, the Gtab is a PITN because it's so bleeding edge and the software hasn't caught up with the hardware, yet. But that's part of the charm -- the mods are pretty stable so it's usable with just a firmware update. It's not overly complicated.
Again, I don't see the appeal of the Galaxy Tab. When they have a WiFi only version for $400, then maybe I'll take a second look.
Most of us got a G Tab because we are habitual early adopters. And because we wanted a 10" capacitive touchscreen tablet. And because we wanted a Tegra 2 tablet. And mostly because we saw how hackable it was, how easy to root, and how easy to install custom ROMs.
The Galaxy Tab is none of those things (7", Samsung hummingbird, only just got clockwork mod recovery 2 days ago, etc.). But it's obviously a much more polished device out of the box.
We all know the software on this thing was garbage, and we know that the modded ROMs are all lacking a bit of polish still, but the latest stuff like Vegan tab beta3 is totally usable on a day-to-day basis for most of us. But probably wouldn't be smooth enough for everybody's needs.
Obviously, if you find yourself "losing sleep" because of your tablet device, by all means, I suggest returning it!! This is supposed to be fun, not a pain. If it's a pain for you, there are obviously other devices out there that don't require so much screwing around to get working well.
So... to do the math for some that do not read the numerous comments and threads on the cost difference between the gtab and galaxy tab = 2yr contract equaling around $1440 for 3gb a month. or 1080 or about that for 1gb. So ALOT more then the gtab. I have played with the galaxy tab and it is nice. But not worth it and very little chance of upgrading.
Oh I also agree with the above post, ease of modding on this tab is great! Plus the ability to bring it back from a bad flash have made me keep this tablet. This has saved me more times then I can count and that is huge!

I couldn't have said it better mayself. I will echo "If you find yourself losing sleep because of your tablet device, by all means return it." This is a hobby for lots of us here. By its nature, this site (xda) is for developers and early adopters. If you're a regular consumer, then this definitely is not the tablet for you.
I love mine. I love being ahead of the curve. I love being part of the community that is making this device live up to its potential. You couldn't pry this out of my fingers if you tried.
But, to each his/her own. Good luck with whatever tablet suits your needs out of the box.
Get your facts strait. Call Verizon or go to one of their store, you will discover data plan is NOT mandatory.. price is $599 regardless, with or without the data plan...
Re "I love being ahead of the curve.".. wow.. with 1.3 mp camera, you think you are ahead the curve?
Not wanting to feed the troll but my response is...
Yes, it's worth it. I use my 10" tab more than I use my phone now. All the things I was doing (except phone calls and texting) I do on my GTab.
$200 more for a smaller, slower, less capable device just doesn't strike me as a good purchase choice (talking about the Samsung Galaxy Tab) since "I" was looking for a capable 10" WiFi only Android 2.2 tab.
Market access - check
Web browsing - check
Gmail + Calendar - check
Flash - check
And all my apps work on it just fine (I have a few guitar chord apps, TapaTalk forum app, Angry Birds, Paper Toss, Facebook, Audio Galaxy, etc...)
I can't see anything I'm missing in this larger (10"), faster (Tegra 2), less expensive ($399) device. Screen angled viewing is bad...I tend to look directly at my tab so it's not really a problem. Also helps keep prying eyes off what I'm doing
What am I missing?
@turk532 - That's still a lot more bread than the GTab. I got mine for $215 from the Outlet.
$600 for a 7 inch tablet is just plain insane, imo. It's got a nice screen but so does the Nook Color, for $350 less. But yes, you have to hack that one, as well.

That's not really the point though, is it?
Is this device as polished as the Galaxy Tab? No. Does this have more potential at a good price point? Absolutely.
If you aren't willing to take a little risk and aren't enjoying modding your device, return it and find one that is good out of the box for more money. Rude comments to others on the board because they don't agree with your opinion is unnecessary and unwarranted.
I actually enjoy tweaking phones/tablets
Yes for me, its worth it; as a companion device to my HTC EVO when I want to travel light without a laptop.
Phone has a big 4.4 inch screen and does everything well, however prolonged use of some applications gives me eye strain! Viewsonic is nicely priced to get more real estate for browsing, games, remote access and for creating documents. Battery life is good enough for a long haul flight.
Phone can be used to create a 4G wifi hotspot for viewsonic to use, so no need for a data plan.
I am sure the ViewSonic ROMs will get to a very stable state in the not so distant future, in the meantime, I enjoy the learning curve associated with configuring the device. If you are not into tweaking then it may not be the right product for you....

I had my mind set that I was getting a Galaxy Tab. 7" screen, polished hardware and software, decent price and perfect for what I wanted. The more I read, the more I knew I was going to get one. Was all set to go after work and pick one up, but I was reading through XDA about my EVO and stumbled across this community for the g tab.
Needless to say, I never made it to the Sprint store. I started reading and following this forum day and night. Learning, researching and listening to reviews. Seen an ad that Sears would have them for $249 and it was a go.
I could not be happier with my choice and so glad I decided to do a little more reading. The hardware is second to none as far as what is on the market today. The software is getting more and more polished with each beta release of the roms these brilliant guys are cooking up.
Is the viewing angle perfect? NO, but it is useable for my needs. For the price, ease of tinkering and changing roms, it cannot be beat!
I may end up getting one of these... any sales looking to happen soon? Hopefully they go on sale after Christmas lol.
The only thing that's deterring me so far is that I don't see any really good ROMs out for this device. I know it hasn't been out for awhile, but I'm trying to figure out if I should just wait for the Motorola tab to come out or get this one.

I'm sorry you dislike the G-Tablet so much you feel the need to rub it into our faces. I'm opting out of this thread from this point forward.
Playing with the g-tablet is a lot of fun.. I just purchased it past saturday and installed TNT lite 2.2 on it. Just upgraded to 2.4 but got a force close error every 5 seconds. I just loaded Vegan b3. I do programming for living (wrote a couple of android games). It is not about the $200 dollars for me, I just feel satisfied and fun when I play with it. Otherwise, I will just buy an Ipad, 50% of my co-workers have IPad..
" ... losing sleep over it and spending endless hours..."
I for one, agree with above posted statement.
I've been losing sleep since the day I picked it up from sears.
Almost every nite, my wife has to pry Gtab off my hands ...
" Is it really worth it?"
GTab x2 = Galaxy Tab (in term of $$$). ---> I should buy another GTab so I can flash different ROM!
I've had the gpad for almost 2 weeks now and I had a learning curve
for some things. I also, learned alot during that time line. I like the gpad
and it does what I need it to do.
I got it for surfing the net, sending gmail, watching movies and some
gaming too. I'm still missing one game that I play to kill time .. It's
plants vs zombies ... but I hear it's coming in the coming weeks ..
Spending countless hours? on installing rom? How?!
10" cap screen, runs all the apps I want, and is damn fast!
Love my g Tablet!
Anybody who *really* wanted a tablet that was slick and just worked out of the box would just buy an iPad.
Many, if not most people who choose Android over IOS do so because it lets them do stuff like flash roms and add capabilities.
