At last: File transfer in WM 6.1 RDP client - General Topics

As has been explained in the Remote Desktop Control Bible, in the pre-WM6.1 days, Windows Mobile was clearly worse than WindowsCE .NET running on clamshell devices in that the Remote Desktop Mobile client couldn’t make any file transfer in the former, while it could do in the latter (for years).
It seems my pushing Microsoft very hard to implement this feature has resulted in good results: now, the WM 6.1 RDP client does already support file transfer. This means you won’t need to use either commercial remote desktop control alternatives like GoToMyPC, RDM+ or the non-free version of LogMeIn to have bidirectional file transfer capabilities but can safely rely on those of the built-in client. (If RDP is sufficient for or, for some reason, preferred by you, that is.)
By default, file transfer is enabled in the WM6.1 Remote Desktop Mobile application as can be seen in the new screenshot, showing the new drop-down list:

To actively transfer files in both directions, fire up Explorer on the remote desktop and just copy/paste between the remote desktop’s file system and that of the mobile device, which, now, will be listed under My Computer as “Files on device name” (in the following screenshot, WM_Administrat1):
Note that, should you not have WM6.1 on your Windows Mobile device, you can download the new RDM client HERE.
It needs at least WM5 to run and it is also compatible with touchscreen-less MS Smartphones. What is more, on the latter, you won’t need SPHelper or other mouse emulators – the new RDM contains mouse emulation support. (Nevertheless, note that on my HTC s710, while I was able to see the “Files on HTC_s710” account in File Explorer, I couldn’t see any files inside).
Also note that most “cooked” 6.1 ROM’s contain the new client – for example, that of the HTC Universal (for example, tomal's 7.7); that is, if there’s a cooked WM6.1 ROM release at XDA-Developers for your particular model, it’ll most probably have the new client.
Again and again, please consult the Remote Desktop Control Bible for what this is all about, when you would like to use it, how it compares to the alternative solutions etc.

thanks!

TIP: PPC2k / Palm OS-related communication tips

Here follows a quick follow-up to my previous, big, Pocket PC Thoughts-frontpaged article on Windows Mobile vs. other platforms communication. In here, I elaborate a bit more on Palm OS vs Windows Mobile and intra-WindowsCE communication issues. I also explain what PeaceMaker Pro can be used for.
You should definitely read this article if you want to know how you can exchange data with the oldest Pocket PC brands. This information may prove VERY handy (and even life/business-saving!) if you meet people that (still) use these kinds of Pocket PC’s.
Also, it contains some additional, Palm OS-related tips and tricks that may prove REALLY useful if you need to do any kind of data / file transfer with Palm users - for example, easily transferring Pocket Word / Word Mobile or Notes files.
1. Palm OS and Pocket PC interoperability via infrared
What I’ve stated about the data transfer issues between Windows Mobile and Palm OS (please DO read the above-linked article - I won't repeat everything I've stated in there) holds true when the data is exchanged over Infrared instead of Bluetooth. This means you can beam the same types of files and data in both directions as is the case with Bluetooth.
There are some cases, however, where a third-party application, PeaceMaker Pro by Conduits, may be of help. In the following, I elaborate on this application a bit more.
First, if you still happen to have a Pocket PC 2000 (or a Handheld PC / a Palm-size PC) device, you will need to turn to PeaceMaker Pro, which is meant to help in these situations. It’s the only way to transfer any (!) kind of data between a PPC 2000 and a Palm device.
Second, if you plan to directly transfer .PWI (Notes) or .PSW (Pocket Word; the built-in “word processor” of pre-WM5 operating systems; I’ll elaborate on WM5 promptly) files from a post-Pocket PC 2000 device to a Palm, you may also need this application.
Note that the latter may be easily circumvented on post Pocket PC 2000 platforms because these files will be inevitably converted to simple textual Memos (textual means all the inline graphics in Notes files and all formatting in Pocket Word files will be gone) by just
with Pocket Word (or, for that matter, Word Mobile under WM5), open the file in Pocket Word / Word Mobile, go to (under pre-WM5) Tools / File / Save Document As (under WM5, Menu / File / Save As…) and, choosing Plain Text (Document) in the Type drop-down list, save the file as a textual file. Make sure you answer No to the following question so that the conversion does take place.
With Notes, open the file, bring up the on-screen keyboard, click Ctl and, then, A so that everything is selected. Now, tap-and-hold the screen and select Copy in the context menu. Now, create a new file in Pocket Word / Word Mobile, Paste the contents of the just-populated clipboard into it and save it as a plain textual (TXT) file in the above-explained way.
This way, you will be able to safely beam the newly created TXT file to a Palm OS device by just tap-and-holding the file in the File list view of Pocket Word / Word Mobile and choosing Beam File...
These cases are summarized in the next two charts:

Post-PPC 2000:
Note that under WM5 you can’t use Peacemaker’s contact sending capabilities: the DLL plug-in file doesn’t seem to be signed. This is clearly visible in the following two times two screenshots (taken on the WM5 HTC Wizard and Dell Axim x51v): HTC Wizard-1 HTC Wizard-2; x51v-1 x51v-2.
1.1 What’s wrong with the PPC 2000 operating system?
As can clearly be seen, the Pocket PC 2000 operating system, infrared-wise, is vastly different from later Pocket PC operating systems. Its infrared communication is non-standard. This, unfortunately, also has a bad effect on its capabilities of communicating with Pocket PC’s running later operating system versions. In the following section, I elaborate on this question a bit more.
2. Pocket PC 2000 vs. newer Pocket PC / Windows Mobile operating systems
If you’ve ever seen a Pocket PC 2000 or 2002 device, you’ve seen a program called “Infrared Receive” on it and wondered what’s it for, particularly because the latter operating system, Pocket PC 2002, was already able to auto-receive beams without your having to explicitly ask it to do so. What’s the point in Pocket PC 2002’s having the “Infrared Receive” program, then? you may ask.
The answer is that using it was the only way to receive both files and PIM data on the Pocket PC 2002 (PPC2k2) operating system from PPC 2k devices. While, on PPC2k2 devices, you can receive any kinds of PIM data or files from any other, later PPC / Windows Mobile devices without touching anything (assuming the auto-receiving beams was enabled in Settings / Connections / Beam), this wasn’t the case with PPC2k devices’ beaming information: the only way of receiving it was explicitly starting “Infrared Receive”.
Later (post-PPC2k2; that is, WM2003+) operating systems’ not having “Infrared Receive” also means they are unable to receive any kind of data from PPC2k devices any more.
This case is shown in the following chart:
What about the opposite direction, that is, later operating systems trying to beam information / files to PPC2k, you may ask. Well, the situation is a bit better in this case: up to (and including) WM2003SE, you could beam anything from these devices to PPC2k-based Pocket PC’s (of course, as PPC2k has no auto-receiving capabilities, you must start “Infrared Receive” on them to receive any beams). WM5, however, no longer supports this kind of transfer – that is, it’s impossible to beam anything from a WM5 device to a PPC2k one. This is shown in the next chart:
Note that PeaceMaker Pro does NOT allow for communicating with later (WM2003+) operating systems - it's only meant for communicating with Palm OS.

LAN shares, HTC Network Plugin

Hey everyone!
I'm looking for a plugin which allowes me to access LAN shares from my Tornado.
I found the so called "HTC Network plugin", which should enable this feature, but it doesn't work. They say it adds an LAN-Connection option to the connection-settings, but this is not the case.
So basicly I want to access my music folder on my pc to play the music on my tornado. Does anyone have an idea?
Is this possible on a smartphone?
Not possible at all
I did it. It is necessary to throw simply libraries from pda, and the networkplugin will work. Here they (for wm6): *http://kmz.ho.com.ua/Netbios.zip

Can You post some quick guide how to do this and what possibilities it gives.
Is it work on USB connection?
I don't know. I tested on wifi connection....
mmh, doesn't work for me. I copied your files in the windows-directory and re-installed the HTC Network Plugin, but there still isn't a setting for lan shares.
it`s working
awesome stuff.. it works perfectly! next: get a wifi packet sniffer to work on the tornado and i won`t be considering upgrading to a wizard
Well, can anyone tell me which cab-version of the plugin you are using? I can't get it to work.

I copied these dlls to my Windows folder in my Qtek 8310 and installed JUVS HTC Network Plugin mui 0409, but I don't know how to interface with my Windows Network folder shares. I connected to my AP via WiFi and tried using Resco File Explorer to find the shares, but I don't see anything. How exactly am I suppose to install this components and where will I see the interface to the folder shares in my network.
Thanks
network browser
first you need to map the contact or message button as "fake cursor" , then you must find the file networkplugin.exe in your windows folder and run it. select new and click browse. then use the button mapped as fake cursor to tap the network neighbourhood and browse to the share you want to map. you will be prompted to enter user and password. if you don`t have any just click ok.
(tip: to close the cursor press the home button and then restart networkplugin.exe and you can use the keypad normally). if the share is added successfully you can browse to the "network" folder in the device filesystem.

Thanks... That Worked!!!... The only difference is that I kept the NETUI.DLL that came with NiTroGen's WM6 Platinum SP1 build in the Windows folder as it had a latter date. I just copied the REDIR.DLL and NETBIOS.DLL to the Windows folder. I also put a shortcut to the networkplugin.exe in my Start Menu.
Thanks again
my smartphone still can't work
I can browse all computers working on the lan.
But I can't browse share dir on each computer.
Double-click Computer name but lack of response.

[APP] Microsoft MS reader working on HD2

Hi everybody I didn't find anything about this in other threads, so I post here the files necessary for a perfect visualization of MSreader on HD2.
install via active sync (on SD card) the file "MSreader PPC ITA.exe", it will create a "windows" folder on the card, open that folder (I don't remember if it contains or not another "MSreader" folder or only files) and copy away all the files in a folder of your choice
uninstall MSreader PPC ITA and install via active sync (on device or SD as you prefer) the file "MSreader WM 6.1.exe", it will create his own folder in your program folder, then soft reset.
go to the folder where you previously saved first installation files and copy everything in your new MSreader program folder and accept overwriting, then soft reset
You should have the reader working perfectly, in italian language and 4 font size option instead of 3.
If you want it in another language (not verified)
download the 2.4.1 version from microsoft website , install it instead of PPC ITA version and follow other steps.
It should be working in the chosen language, I'm not shure cause the PPC ITA version I attached is an older version I think..
The only bug I found is that installing the reader is disabled the pdf files preview in documents tab (tested only on ROM Artemis 9) ..so give a try and report.

EDIT: for those who use BOOKLIB to manage the library and want to open msreader directly from it I think it' necessary to install firstly the WM version of MSr on device and then simply overwrite using the PPC version. Otherwise when you try to open a .lit book via booklib it won't be able to find MSreader..
works also in landscape using an app that makes rotate the screen.
PLToggle seems the best cause works on request, autorotation is not suggested due to the long loading time of the reader.
I used AEButton plus, unfortunately has some issues with button mapping on WM 6.5.x (with WM6.5 ROM I mapped the volume buttons for MSreader page up-down -EDIT: volume button issue seems solved, see here ) but rotation option works and I mapped the start and back button for page up-down . If You make a search into this forum there are other light apps for screen rotation that can be used.
You need some patience when rotate MSreader, it needs half a minute for big files before you can manage them, because the app is reloading all the .ebo annotation file with the landscape format (same when you go back to portrait).
If someone wants to use another reader such as Freda but has a massive .lit ebook collection and doesn't want to lose it and wants something easier and faster than Calibre conversion to epub format software, there's Convert LIT a very good an fast conversion software that starting from a .lit file creates a html file with related images in a single folder named as the ebook, all you have to do is copy that folder in Freda library.
When you open Freda library you have to allow the search in subfolders and yuo'll find your new html books.. open one and you'll have it with images and hypertextual links!
thanks! nice job

any other bug found/solved?

No, it's free, but microsoft abandoned this project ,so there is not a version for latest windows mobile.
installing only the WM 6.1 version on new devices gives fonts and visualization issues.
Installing as described in post #1 avoid that issues, it results a sort of improved merged version, without leaving installation files in windows folder.

Remote Desktop over internet ?

Hi everyone,
it might be a stupid question but I was wondering if the Remote Desktop app could be used to access my laptop via internet.
I know it works very well when the Surface and the laptop are connected to the same Wireless router but I would like to know if th same as possible, given the fact that the laptop and the Surface are connected to different (distant) wifi networks.
I searched for this but could not find a clear answer or "how to" to do it.
Thank you very much
You can do it, look up port forwarding for remote desktop. You need to setup your router to do it.. I think the default port for RD is 3389
Thank you very much
You will also have to know the public IP address of the router, do the port forwarding and it works fine. You can use DynDNS or one of the other services to keep the IP address updated. Or, you can use TeamViewer to do it without touching your router. You have to set up an account at TeamViewer, but everything is free and it works well.

Well I will try both ways and see what is the most convenient, thank you for your answer
I remote in from outside networks and it works great. Now I just wish we could enable the setting to allow us to transfer files. Where it shows us the local hard drive on the remote computer and all we have to do is drag and drop.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Can you not? Remote Desktop still supports this, at least the desktop version (haven't tried the "Metro" one).
Huzzah!
I'm actually using metro-app on a daily basis with no-ip (so i don't have to remember my own ip-adress all the time)
So all you need to do is:
1. Get your self an account at: http://www.noip.com/
2. Create a host and install client
3. Open port: 3389 on your router and point it to the right computer
4. Allow it in the firewall
5. Connect
There is ofc more steps if you want to be more specific, but I think you'll figure it out
I would have to say Team Viewer is by far the easiest solution.
Yeah +1 Teamviewer here..

++1 just tried this out, dead simple to use and no networking mojo needed.
Interesting you guys have chosen TeamViewer so clearly,....I've just tried it, and it will make due for now, but I need to copy and paste text from pdfs constantly and I noticed it to be extremely laggy by comparison (to RD). I'm guessing it's because it needs to download more data than the native client, but if there are any suggestions on speeding it up please post.
Remote Desktop/RemoteApp Problems
I have not been able to connect while out-of-network.
I've waisted several days of productivity trying to resolve this by myself, then on the phone with Microsoft, and some of them aren't even familiar with Surface RT. So with connecting to RD in-network is pretty easy and effective, hopefully some here can confirm that they have the same problems and/or offer possible solutions.
As I see it, there are 3 interfaces where we can connect to RD on the Surface RT: The the pre-installed desktop Remote Desktop found via swipe and search, the metro downloadable Remote Desktop, and RemoteApp via control panel).
I see where the computer is pinged and port 3389 is open, so I will state the problems I see with each when I try log into a Windows 8 Host computer:
1) pre-installed RD:

It's great and your computer name is there for you and ready while logged into your account and in-network. You have options like "Connect and don't warn me If server authentication fails" that I see helped out a lot of people on Windows Server with certificate issues.
Once out of network on Surface RT, however, you get "Remote Desktop can't find the computer ______. This might mean that "_____" does not belong to the specified network. Verify the computer name and domain that you are trying to connect to."
2) Metro UI:
It seems to ping the computer faster when you put :3389 at the end of your IP. However, no success after trying with and without the port ending. The messages I get are....
3)RemoteApp:
this is the solution I've seen in most tutorials,...but the reason given for not connecting is "The remote computer cannot be authenticated due to problems with its security certificate."
Instead of the option to bypass it (which option 1 gives you), there is no other option and it says "Windows cannot continue setting up this connection. Contact your workplace administrator for assistance."
This message caused me to learn more about certificates than I ever wanted to know. I've tried starting up MMC and making sure the cert listed in Remote Desktop was copied to the Trusted Root Certificate Authorites folders (both sides as local computer certificates). I've tried different combinations and haven't really gotten anywhere.
If anyone connects via #3, please post specs on your certificate if you can find it.
Any help on getting any of these methods to work is appreciated. It bares repeating that port 3389 is listed as open on my home network, traffic is forwarded to the correct PC, and all firewalls are disabled until I can resolve this.

[APP] Android Apps for Remote Computer Access

What is Remote Access Software?
Remote access software is used to access or control a computer remotely via another device that's connected through a network or the Internet. Remote desktop software enables the user to see and control a connected PC as though they are sitting directly in front of it. You can perform actions and tasks on the remote computer or copy, download and edit files remotely.
How to use Remote Access Apps on Your Android Device?
To use any of the following remote access apps on Android, you'll need to create an online account and install the software on the computer you wish to remotely access. Next, you'll install the Android app on your device and provide your login and password information to connect.
