Hi everyone,
it might be a stupid question but I was wondering if the Remote Desktop app could be used to access my laptop via internet.
I know it works very well when the Surface and the laptop are connected to the same Wireless router but I would like to know if th same as possible, given the fact that the laptop and the Surface are connected to different (distant) wifi networks.
I searched for this but could not find a clear answer or "how to" to do it.
Thank you very much
You can do it, look up port forwarding for remote desktop. You need to setup your router to do it.. I think the default port for RD is 3389
Thank you very much
You will also have to know the public IP address of the router, do the port forwarding and it works fine. You can use DynDNS or one of the other services to keep the IP address updated. Or, you can use TeamViewer to do it without touching your router. You have to set up an account at TeamViewer, but everything is free and it works well.

Well I will try both ways and see what is the most convenient, thank you for your answer
I remote in from outside networks and it works great. Now I just wish we could enable the setting to allow us to transfer files. Where it shows us the local hard drive on the remote computer and all we have to do is drag and drop.

Can you not? Remote Desktop still supports this, at least the desktop version (haven't tried the "Metro" one).
Huzzah!
I'm actually using metro-app on a daily basis with no-ip (so i don't have to remember my own ip-adress all the time)
So all you need to do is:
1. Get your self an account at: http://www.noip.com/
2. Create a host and install client
3. Open port: 3389 on your router and point it to the right computer
4. Allow it in the firewall
5. Connect
There is ofc more steps if you want to be more specific, but I think you'll figure it out
I would have to say Team Viewer is by far the easiest solution.
Yeah +1 Teamviewer here..

++1 just tried this out, dead simple to use and no networking mojo needed.
Interesting you guys have chosen TeamViewer so clearly,....I've just tried it, and it will make due for now, but I need to copy and paste text from pdfs constantly and I noticed it to be extremely laggy by comparison (to RD). I'm guessing it's because it needs to download more data than the native client, but if there are any suggestions on speeding it up please post.
Remote Desktop/RemoteApp Problems
I have not been able to connect while out-of-network.
I've waisted several days of productivity trying to resolve this by myself, then on the phone with Microsoft, and some of them aren't even familiar with Surface RT. So with connecting to RD in-network is pretty easy and effective, hopefully some here can confirm that they have the same problems and/or offer possible solutions.
As I see it, there are 3 interfaces where we can connect to RD on the Surface RT: The the pre-installed desktop Remote Desktop found via swipe and search, the metro downloadable Remote Desktop, and RemoteApp via control panel).
I see where the computer is pinged and port 3389 is open, so I will state the problems I see with each when I try log into a Windows 8 Host computer:
1) pre-installed RD:

It's great and your computer name is there for you and ready while logged into your account and in-network. You have options like "Connect and don't warn me If server authentication fails" that I see helped out a lot of people on Windows Server with certificate issues.
Once out of network on Surface RT, however, you get "Remote Desktop can't find the computer ______. This might mean that "_____" does not belong to the specified network. Verify the computer name and domain that you are trying to connect to."
2) Metro UI:
It seems to ping the computer faster when you put :3389 at the end of your IP. However, no success after trying with and without the port ending. The messages I get are....
3)RemoteApp:
this is the solution I've seen in most tutorials,...but the reason given for not connecting is "The remote computer cannot be authenticated due to problems with its security certificate."
Instead of the option to bypass it (which option 1 gives you), there is no other option and it says "Windows cannot continue setting up this connection. Contact your workplace administrator for assistance."
This message caused me to learn more about certificates than I ever wanted to know. I've tried starting up MMC and making sure the cert listed in Remote Desktop was copied to the Trusted Root Certificate Authorites folders (both sides as local computer certificates). I've tried different combinations and haven't really gotten anywhere.
If anyone connects via #3, please post specs on your certificate if you can find it.
Any help on getting any of these methods to work is appreciated. It bares repeating that port 3389 is listed as open on my home network, traffic is forwarded to the correct PC, and all firewalls are disabled until I can resolve this.

This thread shows how to channel your SD card through your wireless router, therefore making your SD card accessible from most devices (tested on PC, Android and iOS). Please note that your phone and the device must be connected to the same network.
1. Download and install File Expert (it's free) from the Android Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=xcxin.filexpert&hl=en.
2. Open File Expert and press the "Share" icon at the bottom of the screen.

3. Select "Enable WEB Sharing".
The IP and authentication info will be displayed. The URL (which is located in the third line) will be entered in the address bar of the browser in the other device. The username and password will also be required so please remember it ^_^
So on my phone it says "http://192.168.1.102:8080", so I type "http://192.168.1.102:8080" in the browser of another device.
Enter the password and done! You've accessed your phone's SD card from another device.
Please note:
1. This may not work on all devices, ranging from hosting the HTTP server to accessing the SD card from another device.
2. This may not work on all browsers as they may not have the specifications required to access the HTTP server.
3. The username/password can be changed in the File Expert settings or you can COMPLETELY disable any authentication.
3. The user and it's affiliates are NOT responsible for any damage caused physically and/or mentally
There are other apps in the Android Market that have the same function but I just use this. Suggestions are appreciated. Don't forget to 'Thank'
Wow... this rocks.. thank you for this.... God, i love tech... I just sent out a tweet to all
Cheers - very useful - the app came as part of the Gingerburst ROM I installed from Droidzone, so don't even have to install it
Hello!
This would be great, if it would work on my phone. Unfortunately it didn't. I tried it on an HTC Desire powered with MIUI, and after entering the URL in a browser of another android phone (and on a desktop comp), nothing happens. It may be a setting by me tho (probably on the router?), which I didn't find yet.
cheers!
Works great. Excellent app!
I have been using this File Manager App since I got my very first android phone. I don't know why people keep buying and recommending apps that work exactly the same way (or maybe even better for File Expert's case) but cost very high. Duh.
Great find, thanks
this also works using wifi tethering on the 1st mobile to create virtual hotspot and connect 2nd mobile to that hotspot
I tested that on 2 different cyanogenmod 7 devices
This is pretty slick. The current version also offers Bluetooth sharing support over OBEX FTP although that part is rather unstable on my laptop (crashes explorer for some reason). That isn't an issue with the app though. That's a known problem on my laptop that I don't know what's causing it.
I just tried this out - it looks great and the web sharing is incredibly easy to use, thanks!
Installed, and gonna try it tomorrow. I will leave you guys a feedback.

Tried using this but when I connect via either Web sharing or FTP sharing on my computer it just hangs there for a while and says a connection could not be established.
- Both my computer and Xperia X10i are connected to the same Wifi network
- I'm using WB-XPERIA TW Gingerbread Rom if that may account for anything
Configuration?

I have never came across this problem. You could try playing with the File Expert settings, enabling/disabling things and getting to a conclusion. It could be a problem with your ROM, your router or the compatibility with the app. I have noticed that the HTTP server closes when I change to another app (even though it says File Expert's still running). You could try using a different app from the market (there are loads), just type 'web sharing' in the Android Market and see what you get
You could try: https://market.android.com/details?id=nextapp.websharing&feature=search_result It has an awesome UI and easy to use
Hey guys,
I want to present you my newest app "Shutdown Start Remote". Like the title says, you can remote shutdown, restart, hibernate and start your PC.
I often watch movies in the evening and control the VLC Media Player with a app. It was really annoying to get up and shutdown the PC after that. I needed a solution for this situation.
Here is a list of the features:
-Supports Windows, Mac and Linux
-Easy setup with network scanner
-Intuitive design
-No installation required (only run a Java application)
-All screen sizes supported
-Possibility to choose between shutdown, restart and hibernate
-Wake on Lan
You can find out more about this app and a detailed instruction on my homepage.

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know, that a new version is out, which has a option to choose a special theme. For example Android 3.x and 4 now can use the Hole themes. I hope you enjoy the feature
Need a program for PC?
Yes, you need a program to shut down the PC. To start a PC you don't need it. It is a small .jar file (java) running in the background.
Looks great, trying it
Thanks Please let me know whether everything works or you have any problems.
Hi. I'm having problems with this app.
I've got the JAR file on my computer. And the app is also picking up my computer when they go to scan it. However when I click on my found device nothing happens. Then around 10-15 second later an option will pop-up saying "Could not find the PC".
Is there a way to fix this?

nice app, works for me. Some issues/suggestions
-I had to manually enter my IP address for it to even see my PC.
-It notifies me of me using a ad blocker app even though i'm not and never have.
-suggestion: I didn't exactly know how to use the app, you should make a "tutorial" phase first...
I saw the timer, pressed it and it went to 000000 and on my PC a message popped up saying "windows is shutting down"
I think you should put a option there saying something like "Press this to cancel shutdown/restart/hibernation etc."
for people who can't connect:
Instead of searching, press menu and enter the ip manually.
If you don't know your ip, first of all you should be ashamed of yourself, and then give yourself a facepalm
then if you have windows, type cmd in the search and then in the cmdprompt type ipconfig and get the IPv4 or IPv6 ip, the ipv4 is shorter for me.
tried those and still the same result ;[
great app, i do the same thing! can you add a "sleep" function for windows? I find this more useful than shutdown or hibernate.
Hi,
Thank you for the suggestions.
Referring to your problems: if you can't connect although the network scanner found your PC, then your firewall is blocking the connection. The scanner works on another IP address and port than the real connection. So please check your firewall settings.
The network scanner uses following address: 239.1.2.3
The manually inserted IP uses one of the following ports: 57143, 57144, 57145
The final connection uses port 52899 and higher.
@NguyenHuu: No I can't add the sleep function. Windows only has the possibility to shutdown, reboot and hibernate. However you can take a deeper look into the windows settings. It is possible to use the sleep function instead of hibernate. If you see a sleep option in the start menu, then hibernate in my app let's your PC sleep.
@xriderx66: Hm I thought the handling was simple. Isn't the instruction point enough? How would you change it?
Sounds like a neat app. I'd like to check it out but I guess it doesn't support the Droid1.
Definitely won't hold that against you though, my phone is OLD! (But I'm looking forward to an upgrade next month!)
Yes, unfortunately at least Android 2.1 is required.
Hi,
Two weeks ago I've published the new version of the app. I've updated the first post.
really nice app...
can you add a support for dynDNS. I can only insert an IP number.
App worked instantly for me, great app! Thank you for sharing this
While working on that project, I read someone's complaint that AirDroid does not work over a USB cable. I know, that's kind of what the app's name would imply, right?
Anyway, AirDroid is awesome.
There are advantages to using AirDroid over a USB connection: for instance, it's much faster than a wireless connection and your data doesn't travel over your wireless network, and that's obviously safer.
So, I created this couple very basic tray/menu apps: one for OS X, one for Windows. Maybe one for Linux is your ask for it.
All it does it make AirDroid work over the USB cable.
Note that you will need to enable USB debugging on your device. Furthermore, on Windows, you will need to install your manufacturer's USB drivers.

Unfortunately, Bluetooth connections are very slow. I guess, with a rooted phone, it would be possible to install a network driver but again it would likely be extremely slow.

Victore88, thank you. Your post made me realize what's happening: indeed, recent versions of AirDroid stopped working over USB.
I sniffed AirDroid connections and no new port is being used, so I suspect AD stops listening on its local port after logging you in.
I sent an email to AirDroid's support; we will see if they can help.
Cheers

computers says "no" - when trying to download the osx version.
...I'm seriously dumb.
OK, fixed.
Cool idea, but as I understand it, perhaps a little misguided in the approach.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but your target is work/school computers, right? I mean, for your home computer, why not just use WiFi? It's easier, which is why AirDroid went that way. But you want USB access for those computers where you can't get on the WiFi network, and/or you don't trust the air for security purposes.
I think you should make a browser extension for both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. This way, people can use it with Firefox Portable and Chrome Portable from PortableApps.com and similar sites. If a browser extension can't access the system like that (I'm sure they can: both browsers have some kind of IE extension where they put IE's engine in one or more tabs) maybe a standalone portable app, either in PortableApps' open standard or in old-school single-.exe format (maybe with a .ini in the same directory).

I was on vacation a few weeks ago and saw a commercial for a product that promised to give you a full desktop on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device. I was interested so I looked it up. Can't remember the name, but it was basically some remote access software along with a Linux box they provided with OpenOffice, Gimp, etc. on it. You paid a fair amount for a year of service and renewed every year.
I got to thinking... why can't I just do that myself? I have tried remoting into my main desktop before, but that stinks because I have giant dual displays, and fancy 3D desktop effects, and all that. But it made me think: why not set up a virtual Linux box and access it anywhere I have a network connection. You could do this with Windows too or a variety of other tweaks, but I'm going to give you the broad strokes for what you need and you can customize as you see fit.
Here's what the end result looks like:

You need a few things:
1) A computer that is always on that can run VirtualBox or other virtualization software.
2) A public IP address for that computer. I use dyndns but sadly they are now making it hard to sign up for free.
3) A copy of Linux (I use Kubuntu)
4) Some setup on your Android device
You can probably figure out from here but follow along anyway, for a few observations.
1) https://www.virtualbox.org/ - Install this on your computer
2) Like I mentioned, I use dyndns.org but if you don't have an account you may want to try someone else. If your router supports a service, use that. Otherwise look at http://www.no-ip.com/ and http://www.dnsdynamic.org/ and pick what you like. For a dd-wrt router, look under Setup and DDNS for a lot of options. Set it up so your always on computer has a name like mycomputer.dyndns.org or whatever you are using.
3. Create a new virtual machine in Virtual Box. I'm using Kubuntu 386 (http://www.kubuntu.org/). Download Regular Download .iso. I named my machine TabletBack - I set the Base memory to 1GB (I have a lot of RAM; you may want to change this) and set the video memory to 32MB. I created a new virtual hard drive of 20GB and mounted Kubuntu iso as the virtual CDROM. I also set the remote desktop port to 9999 (you can change this, and you may not use it but it doesn't hurt to set it; see later in this guide). All the other settings were the normal settings, except later I will add a shared folder (more on that later). Boot the machine and go through the Kubuntu install. When you are booted completely, install the Virtual Box extensions and shut down. Go back to configure and set a VirtualBox shared folder so that you can access your normal home directory as a shared folder inside the virtual machine. Remove all the fancy wallpapers, 3D, etc. In fact, I may switch down to lxde as a window manager, but have not yet.
4. Here's the tricky part. You need to make the virtual machine have a screen to match the size of your tablet. You might want to make the screen slightly smaller. With the VM shutdown you want to issue this command:
VBoxManage setextradata "TabletBack" "CustomVideoMode1" "1250x695x16"
Obviously use your own VM name and screen size. The size listed works nice for my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.
5. Boot up the VM again (use the regular VirtualBox GUI). Then you need to select this resolution in your xorg.conf. You need an xorg.conf section like this:
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
Modes "1250x695"
EndSubSection
If there is a request, I will attach my entire xorg.conf.
6. Almost there. While you are in the VM, browse to http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx. You might not want to use TeamViewer, and you do have a few options. However, TeamViewer is not only pretty good, but you can also get to your remote machine via any Web browser which is pretty slick. Install TeamViewer on the VM. Also install TeamViewer on your tablet (obviously, the Android version).
7. Tell the VM OS to start TeamViewer automatically. If you use KDE, System Settings, Autostart will let you do that.
8. Ok... now, while the VM is up, start up TeamViewer and do all the the logins. You should be able to start Teamviewer on the Android and using your dynamic DNS name. If it all worked, you should connect and can use your remote machine. If not, you need to fix things until you can. You do not have to use this setup, however, see step 9. TeamViewer should punch a hole in your router assuming it supports uPNP. If you don't use uPNP on your router, you'll need to open the TeamViewer port yourself (5050, usually).
9. You can also use any RDP client (I like the 2X Client from the market) to connect to the RDP server on port 9999 of your dynamic DNS computer. Note: You will need to open your router for port 9999 if you expect to use this outside your local network. If your client needs a password you will need to run the following:
vboxmanage setproperty vrdeauthlibrary "VboxAuth"
10. One last thing. Shut down the VM now that it is all working. Set your main computer to launch the following script:
vboxheadless -startvm TabletBack
Or whatever name you gave it. You won't see anything but you'll be able to connect to the virtual computer.
11. Install all the stuff you want on your VM. OpenOffice, GIMP, whatever.
Wow. That turned out uglier than I thought. But you should get the idea. Ask questions and if there is demand I'll try to clean it up paying special attention to the areas people are having trouble wit

Hello everyone!
Yesterday I released my first Android App called Icy Monitor, it helps you monitor your PC using your android device.
Features
Get graphs about your CPU (load, temperature, clock, power), GPU (load, clock, temperature, fan) and system (fans, temperature, voltages).
Customize graph colors to your liking.
Get information about each filesystem and each process running.
Save and monitor multiple computers effortlessly.
Clean, beautiful interface with tablet support.
The app is free, without advertisments and open source!
Downloads
Play Store
Windows Server
Github (for source)
Setup
Download the server application using the link above. Extract all files somewhere and run the application as administrator (otherwise, I am not allowed to read most sensors). An icon should appear at your system tray, right click it and select 'Open Firewall', this will open port 26822 which is used by the app (This only works with Window's Firewall, if you are using something else you must open port 26822 yourself). Now you can connect from the phone app by typing in your computer's IP address followed by ":26822". If you want to access the server through the Internet you will have to setup port forwarding, which is a different procedure for every router so I cannot help you.
If you don't know your IP, open a command line window and write "ipconfig". You should find your IPv4 address there.

For more info, please visit my page or just ask here. Feel free to mail me at any time.
Thanks a lot for trying my app! Any feedback (positive/negative) is extremely appreciated!

Theoritically, the server could run on Linux with Mono but being a former Linux user I know Mono is not the best option. I am brainstorming this, I hope to be able to support Linux soon.
Thanks for the interest however!
Harmless little bump.
I followed all the instructions then tried setting it up on my device. I was a little confused why it refused to use a domain name. Nonetheless I entered my IP address. Now I get the error "Incompatible server version". Am I doing something wrong?

There was no activity in this thread so I forgot to update the server download link. Try this version. Sorry for the trouble.
Also it SHOULD accept domain names, it worked with mine (looks like this: something.dyndns.info). Maybe it's a port forwarding issue?

There was no activity in this thread so I forgot to update the server download link. Try this version. Sorry for the trouble.

Everything works now, thanks! Once I installed the new server version I was able to connect via IP and domain. Before the domain said it couldnt connect and the IP said incompatible.
This is a very handy app for on the go.

Thanks a lot for trying it! More features are coming soon (like push notifications).
Network monitoring?
Will you be adding network traffic monitoring in the future?

I am currently focusing on server-side features and bug fixes. Next version will include a better designed interface, disk space notifications and better error handling. Thing is, my phone's screen is currently broken so I am delaying this release until I can test it properly. Hopefully it will be ready next week.
