Black screen with "Serial" Message - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro ROM Development

Hi
i was upgrading my XDA Pro from wm5 to Ranju_v77_WM61_19900_19900_1_0_2 rom, it say's it finshed Woth out fail but when doing a hard/soft reset it just gives me a bLANK SCREEN WITH SERIAL AT THE TOP.
Could anyone help me in restoring or Helping me recover to the new rom
Thanks
Moody

Sounds like you're stuck in the Bootloader - try resetting to Bootloader explicitly (Hold Power & Backlight keys while resetting) and connecting to your PC.
If it goes to 'USB', then you should be able to recover using the 'mtty' tool - connect it with USB, hit return a few times, and you should be seeing (on the mtty screen on the PC)
USB>
If you do see that, then do
task 28 55aa
The Universal Wiki contains more details, but that should restore the internal layout of your ROM, and you can then re-flash. It's probably worth resetting to bootloader again first...
Cheers,
PJC.

Thanks for your help,
i an a newby @ this is it possilbe for a step by step guide, also where could i get mtty form a link would be helpful...
Thanks
moody

Do a search for uni_exitbootloader....Download, unzip, and run the program with the device connected; it's worked for me everytime.
NOTE (for future reference): You should do a THOROUGH search of the wiki before posting new threads AND if a new thread is absolutely necessary, post in the section representative of your question...no hard feelings...

Help with a "Bricked" Tilt!

Any Help Appreciated. Anyone ever seen this type of "Brick"?
After flashing a new ROM (Tilt XDA-Live v1.0 - fully flashed to 100% and said finished), the device won't boot. It just gets stuck in an endless loop. It trys to boot, shows the AT&T screen, then reboots/resets back to the beginning before getting to the Windows mobile screen.
The only way to get it to stop the loop is to pull out the battery. Put the battery back in and power on and you get the loop again.
I have loaded HARD SPL (1.0.OliPof).
I can get into Bootloader mode by pressing power/camera then reset.
In this mode, I can get it to reflash the ROM (and even other ROMS) but it still ends up in the same loop.
I have tried flashing the Official ATT WWE ROM from this thread but it still loops at boot.
I did the "original/problematic" flash using Vista. Could that be the issue? I have done subsequent "recovery" flashing using XP to no avail.
I have flashed several ROMs to my Tilt in the past (Mostly Dutty ROMs).
I had a Hermes before and flashed that a million times no issue so I'm not a complete noob.
Any ideas? I'm stuck with a brick!
Thanks in advance.
I'm in the same boat. I've flashed over and over (with different ROMs) and am still stuck. But I did every flash from MicroSD card. Did you get any help?
No input yet.
What ROM did you flash that started the problem for you?
dutty's touchflo rom beta for the tilt. i was on dutty's hybrid rom version 3. after flashing the OEM at&t ROM, i'm out of ideas. stay in touch if you find a fix. i'll keep searching.
- J
Bump...
Anyone else seen the issue with a Tilt stuck in a "boot loop" after flashing (see first post)?
Paypal reward for anyone who helps me recover - otherwise I'm going to have to go buy another Tilt (which I could live with but worse yet, I may be stuck with the stock ROM because I'm too gunshy to go back to my flashing ways)
Tried all day to find a fix. Think I made things worse. Read up on some threads using the mtty tool and ran a command (task 2a) that cleared the flash. But now it doesn't even boot to a splash screen, and I can't get back to bootloader mode.
This might sound a bit stupid, but I have taken note that my device upon flashing the new at&t rom actually held some of the information, you would think that a hard reset is performed after a rom flash, but that just wasn't how it worked out for me, anyway I had a radio that wouldn't come up, but would after a hard reset, this was directly after flashing my tilt...
?Glitch
Glitch,
Yeah, I have heard in several places that you need to hard reset after a flash to clear out all the settings from the old ROM. Seems odd since you just overwrote ROM - I think of it as a format (HDD mindset) but I guess it's not a clean format.
Jerich007,
Sorry to hear you went backwards. I stopped flashing my Tilt for the same reason - worried about getting farther in the hole without some expert advice. My next step was to try the MTTY tool just as you noted. Guess I'll go that route as a last resort. If it's any consolation, I seem to remember reading about plenty of people recovering from a "brick" that won’t go into bootloader mode.
Hopefully someone trolling the waters will see this thread and take up the offer for a Cash Reward (Paypal) for help recovering this Brick!
ill put up some paypal $$ for a fix as well. i'm at the end of my rope on this one. i'm subscribed to some other threads so hopefully we'll get some feedback.
It is not so serious as you think! Try the following way:
1- Download the original rom from AT&T (the 1st rom was installed on your device)
2- Turn your bricked Tilt to bootloader ( http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_Resets )
3- Start flashing your Tilt with the above AT&T rom.
Evething should be OK after that! (but your device need to be installed Hard-SSPL before!!!)
try...

don't forget that some of this info isn't for the tilt...
good luck, and be careful
This ROM solved my issues
try this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327482
and DEFINETLY download the ROM, flash it. Once it's flashed, then ya can reflash any ROM ya want. Get the newest stock ROM from the sticky and reflash it (if ya want the ATT ROM)
That will fix it.
(I reflashed Tilt XDA-Live v 1.0, and it's working GREAT.)
I did the same thing to my Tilt.
That ROM saved me.

Problem is I can't get to a bootloader screen now. I press Camera+Power+reset, but all that happens is the green LED goes off then on, and then the screen is blank. Anyone know any other tricks? I think I may have erased my bootloader using mtty command 'task 2a'.
...
Hate to say it, but if after hours of searching on the forum you can't find an answer, i'd pm a pro like pof. I don't know if that will work, but their advice is the only thing i'd listen to.
Don't forget to give a lot of detail and maybe mention what you've tried.
Thanks. I've already PM'd pof and olipro. Hopefully they can come up with something.

****, I should have replied after someone posted all those links to Hermes unbrick procedures, to never do a task 2a from hardSPL. It reformats entire flash including SPL and the problem with hardSPL is that you can't flash another SPL, even if you would have tried before rebooting
Anyhow, your only chances to unbrick your device are to try to enter radio bootloader (there is a radio bootloader running on the mARM (ARM9)) and then to flash it. However, only service centres have such flashx utilities I'm afraid. Furthermore I'm not sure if radio bootloader can be entered directly, usually you can enter it via the normal CE SPL. You can try to first connect USB and then press reset with the stylus while holding the Voicecmd key. If you are in XP, then three new devices should be found (composite USB, a modem and a diagnostics port). Download the Motorola "Q" usb drivers, these will work just fine. In this mode you will have to authenticate to the radio bootloader before you can start entering commands. We'll get to that if you manage to connect. Your other chance to unbrick is via JTAG. I know the kaiser has JTAG points scattered on PCB.
Ok, thanks, I'll search for those drivers and let you know. By Voicecmd key do you mean the push-to-talk key along the side or the talk key with the green phoneset icon?
The top button at the left hand side
Ok here's what happens:
1. downloaded Motorola USB drivers (32-bit) from their site, installed and rebooted.
2. plugged in Tilt via usb cable, 'found new Hardware wizard' starts.
3. clicked next to auto-search for drivers, but the wizard fails with 'cannot install this hardware' message. I have 3 yellow question marks in Device Manager for 'Data Interface' devices.
4. held down Push-to-talk button and hit soft reset. No change, no leds are lit, screen is off.
Did I grab the right drivers?
Not bad at all. Apparently your phone is in Qualcomm DIAG mode, probably as a consequence of task 2a Now you can forget about rebooting with Voicecmd pressed.
Either you've got the wrong drivers or you don't install them in the correct way. Go in device manager, right click one of the 3 and update driver, then 'install from a list or specific location (Advanced)', then check 'Include this location in search' and enter the driver path. I'll take a quick look if I can find the drivers for you, I vaguely remember they were on mobile-files dot com.
EDIT: found the drivers, attached. The VID and PID of the found usb devices should be VID_05C6&PID_6000. Take a look in the device's advanced tab in device manager.
PS: Although diagnostics mode sounds great, I haven't yet found a way to flash the device. Perhaps it works with that Hermes radio flasher MaUpgrade_NoID.exe
Guys with a working SPL can enter radio bootloader DIAG mode via "rtask b", exit MTTY and install drivers. It would be great to know if someone has a htc/qualcomm radio flash utility (perhaps MaUpgrade_NoID.exe is what you need)

Loosing USB Connection using CustomRUU

Hey all, first post long time reader.
Please dont flame me, i have tried to search for the answer but seem to be going nowhere.
Is anybody getting the Error [262] while using KaiserCustomRUU.exe? I just flashed Dutty's DualTouch v4, that worked great! Now i am trying to flash the radio, i have heard good things about 1.27.12.17. It will not flash, I have followed the instructions over and over again. It gets to the point where it shows the completion bar, it gets stuck with 0%. I follow the instructions, pull the battery out and try again, no luck. I have noticed that during the process active sync goes from green to grey. (I think this is supposed to happen) But the odd thing is that the "Local Area Connection" (for the phone) in Windows XP Network Connection disappears. I am guessing this is my problem. Does anybody know what causes the phone to disconnect from the computer? Or am i doing something obviously wrong.
Any help is appreciated.
also - after it locks up at th 0% screen, and after i receive the error 262, i then unplug the phone from the computer. when i do this, windows makes the sound of a USB device getting unplugged. so does that mean i really didnt loose connection, and the error 262 is due to something else?
Did you use Hard SPL Before flashing. Is a must to not brick your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
Read carefully and will be OK.
Yes i have used HardSPL. I have already flashed with Duty's DualTouch ROM, and it WORKS. It was really easy and painless. For some reason I can not get the radio to flash. From my understanding, HardSPL only needs to be done once. That changes the bootloader, i think? Either way, I already did the HardSPL, flashed the ROM, just want to change the radio now. As the instructions said, this can be done after I flash the ROM using CustomRUU. Any thoughts?
I am going to go ahead and try to flash a custom flash screen. Will post back results
I tried using the CustomRUU to flash Kaiser with new splash screen, but no luck. Same error as before. Good news is that the phone still works!
If you are shure about Hard SPL (you can check again if is rited OLIPOF) "Hold Camera + Power buttons together and reset with stylus"-to enter in Bootloader and check again.
If is correct I sugest to reflash with original HTC Rom (wich include radio ) and after that start again with HardSPL --- Radio --- ROM upgarde

SPL-1.56.0000
CPLD-8
i had followed the insructions from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
- HTC Kaiser Hard-SPL v1 - CID Unlock & Flash any ROM to your device (4 free)
looks like i did something wrong? it does not say OLIPOF
any ideas? can i just do it all over again, and be safe?
thanks for your help.
You had some luck to flash cooked ROM without Hard SPL.Be more carefuly and read .Those guys work for us to be protecyed from breaking our phones
yes but read carefuly:
Please make sure ActiveSync is enabled (GREEN icon in systray)
and hit ENTER to start...
Kaiser JumpSPL is running on your device, please check your device
screen and follow the steps until you see the tri-color screen.
When done hit ENTER to continue...
Device screen should be now TRI-COLOR and show "USB"
===> PLEASE UNPLUG AND RE-PLUG THE USB CABLE NOW <===
===> PLEASE UNPLUG AND RE-PLUG THE USB CABLE NOW <===
===> PLEASE UNPLUG AND RE-PLUG THE USB CABLE NOW <===
ActiveSync icon should become gray after that.
When done hit ENTER to continue...
Phone screen should now be tri-color and the activesync icon gray
if not, the loading process has failed and you'll have to repeat it again.
If all was OK hit ENTER and the standard "PDA Phone ROM Update Utility"
window will start, allowing you to flash HardSPL on your device.
Hit CTRL+C to Cancel or ENTER to continue...
Follow the steps on the wizard to flash HardSPL, when finished your
device will reboot. It should last no more than 1 minute.
- Launching RUU, please wait...
Process is finished, congratulations!
I see what you are saying. So some how I managed to just flash on the JumpSPL, and bypass the last steps of flashing HardSPL?
So now I should follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354061
do step - "if you want to flash a hardSPL then run KaiserCustomRUU.exe from flash-hardSPL.zip on your PC"
or do you suggest i just try to install HardSPL over again.
damn i suck, i thought i was being careful.
try Hard SPL but follow the instruction and don't hurry wait for every message from that window
That thread is just in case your phone don't enter in bootloader
will do, thanks for your help!
its definetly not my first day using a computer, flashing ROMs, etc. damn i feel like a complete newb
hey it worked. thanks for your help. if you are ever in chicago, PM me. i owe you a few beers.
No problem .Glad can help.

Hello to all, I am a noob here and have tried to adhere to all of the demands to do research and not post ?'s, but I am at a wall.
I have a Tilt and I ran the sim unlock and I was using the Sleuth 3.0 on it. Everything was working fine. I added the Iunlock cab and it worked fine as well. I then tried to install the icontacts, but i would have to go to program files and icontacts file in order to use I contacts. Well, wanna be innovative me thinks to try and move that file so it would replace something. I copied it to the windows appbuttons folder and deleted the regular contacts and nothing happened, then I put it in the start up folder and no luck, then I simply copied it to the windows folder not at the bottom where all of the extra files are. After that I tried to reset it and now all that I get is the bootloader screen. it reads as follows:
KAIS1*0 MFG
SPL-1.0.Olipof
CPLD-8
At the bottom, it shows either USB or Serial depending on if the usb is plugges up.
I tried running the sim unlock again and the dutty rom and both load to 100% but it goes back to the same screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please help and thank you so much.

You could hard reset if you altered something in WM to cause it not to boot...hopefully
I tried the hard reset and same thing I flashes for a very split second loading and then goes back to the screen.
Hard reset is both item buttons above IE and Mail with soft reset correct?

U need to hold the stylus in the hole longer, untl a message pops up on the page.
If it does not hardreset or help u, do what zeezee told u - flash a new rom.
OK, thank you all for you diligent assistance. I have tried the hard reset and it does the same thing...goes to black for about 2 seconds, then for a very split second goes to a grey screen and flashes loading then back to the bootloader.
I will try a search for the people stuck in bootloader and try flashing a OEM ROM, I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

From youre sd card (memorycard), look it up in wiki. Moust of us flashaholics keeps oure rom on oure memorycard and just rename the rom/bootsplash/radio or whateva and place it in root then activate bootloader -> flash. This is an alternative for not using usb cable, pc and active sync
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=KaiserSDFlash
ok thanks, but am i correct in understanding that to do that I have to use the phone to access the mem card?
My issue is that the only screen I get is bootloader, no nothing else. I can't even turn it off. I can take the battery out to get a black screen, but any action to try something will take it back to the bootloader screen. But for some reason, it still allows me to flash the ROM, I think. I flash it on my pc and then my phone goes to the grey screen where it shows the % of progress. It reaches 100% and the pc tells me to click finished and I do then it goes back to the bootloader.

I don't mean to argue with you here and you are right about research threads, but honestly it's easy to get caught up in frustration with the amount of information. Some authors are good at documentation and some skip steps along the way or extra links are in the threads.
I just switched over to Gullum's Diamond Rom and was I nervous upgrading "Yes" and did I read much that I could "Yes". Were the instructions to HardSPL, Jump were a little unclear "Yes" so people asking questions are legit to a degree but we shouldn't also be eagar to pounce on...

I agree with some of your remarks. Yes myself and others have jumped down people's throats yelling, "Search." One thing you have to remember though this is a developers forum, not a novice forum to help people making there phone look "cool."
Going into flashing / upgrading / modifying, you have to have a little bit of knowledge or time using Windows Mobile / Windows in General devices and machines.
Usually reading some background information can be a world a difference before jumping into this sort of thing.
I found the problem to stuck in bootloader. Thanks to all who have posted threads.

On the Kaiser note, I found after further studying of some threads, a solution to my issue where I was stuck in bootloader. I think this will apply to anyone that is stuck in bootloader with the usb/serial showing at the bottom and when they try to flash a new rom is goes to 100%, but the are still stuck on the boot screen.
After reading more threads, it appeared that there was some sort of disconnect between the usb and the phone. Since my PC was stating that it was successfully completing the flash, that shows that it was not getting any type of error from the phone. After reading a thread I simply blew in my tilt usb port and used my stylus to try to straighten it out as one of your post state to ensure the usb connection is straightor it may give mtty an issue.
Once I messed with my USB port, the phone came back to life and everything was fine. Everything was rebooted and all my info was lost however. I was even able to successfully flash a new ROM.
In closing, if anyone is stuck in bootloader mode and their flash goes to 100% and doesn't fix their issue, tell them to clean and straighten their usb connection.

Absolutely death?

I tried some new ROMs (by Tomal, luca16thebig, VNInt...) and after upgraging to Cotulla latest version Uni crashed!
Now it only can boot in to hard reset mode (LEFT softkey + RIGHT softkey + RESET), no another activity. PC can't recognize device.
I tried to disable USB connection in ActiveSync and used Multi TTY/ExitBT. These tools couldn't connect to device (mtty says "\\.\WCEUSBSH001 port can not open").
(Uni in that moment was in hard reset mode)
How can i repair device?

Go into bootloader mode (on/off button, light button, and reset hole all at once) make sure your sd card is out, and try to flash again with cotulla rom! dont forget to read his instructions to go back to normal roms and allow time for rom to set up, dont hard reset after you flash!!!!

Jay
Yep.
I move out SD (SDHC) and SIM cards.
Tried flash again - when PC program usually show previous version and new version right now it show empty fields. When it start to flash it show "Error 112: CE ROM UPDATE ERROR" message.
When my Uni is bricked I boot into the bootloader with the "Serial"-string. Then I put my SDHC out of the device and then it says "USB".
Every flash worked very well.
I can't force it to show "Serial"-string
Try this
Cotulla ROM is different.Memory allocation is different.
1.Remove SD card and always remove the SIM card.Very important.
2.First uncheck the 'allow USB connection' in active sync or WMDC[if VISTA].
Close active sync/WMDC in task manager.
3.Put Uni in BOOTLOADER.[Power+Backlight+Soft reset].
4.Run mtty.Click on USB.
5.Type 14 0 [ there is a single space between 14 and 0],press enter.
Wait ....
6.Type task 32 [there is a single space between task and 32],press enter
Wait....
7.Type task 28 55aa [ there is a single space between 28 and 55,and no space between 55 and aa],press enter
Wait...
8.When the desktop finishes the work..usually takes 5-10 seconds..close mtty.
9.Disconnect Uni...which is still in BOOTLOADER...
10.Go to active sync/WMDC and check 'allow USB connection'.
11.Flash with a WM5 ROM..I had KDSkamal's Ultimate ROM.
12.You should have got Uni back.
13.Then upgrade it to any ROM you want..6.0,6.1etc...if you want to.
Honestly speaking I don't know what the heck these procedures are,but if you do this STEP by STEP it works like a charm.
Cheers...waiting for your reply.
OK.
Now i know what to send Uni via mtty.
We have a solution to connect tools to device properly (mtty says "\\.\WCEUSBSH001 port can not open") after such crush?

Look (It can be shown only with USB connection):
http://picasaweb.google.ru/Maxim.Korobov/RepairOfHTCUniversal?feat=directlink
And nothing else
Well,at this stage, what happens when you press 0[zero]?
And can you please tell whether you can PUT the UNI in the BOOTLOADER by pressing POWER+BACKLIGHT+SOFT RESET simultaneously?
Because I have read almost all the threads regarding STUCK uni and I never came across one with a screen like yours.
On the second thought...press Backlight+Soft reset simultaneously...what do you see?
The image you are showing us is "Hard reset" what you want is bootloader. you get boot loader as we described above, once you have it in boot loader it is easy to get your uni back. In bootloader it will say serial or USB if it is plugged in at the top and V1.01 or V2.01 or something like those numbers at the bottom on a grey unlit screen.

You said When i press POWER+BACKLIGHT+SOFT RESET there is no any results. What this keystrokes mean? I didn't know it before
What do you mean by that.
1.You cannot enter the bootloader
or
2.You don't know what the bootloader is?
And did you uncheck usb connection in AS,remove SD and SIM during MTTY....just to be sure
And finally PLEASE read this thread...It is really helpful..though old.

vox stacked at bootloader

Folks, really need help.
allready googled.. but i really behind from WinPhone update/recover process.
My vox suddenly stacked at bootloader (see attach)
How to exit from them?
Does my info still in phone, can i recover it?
If not how i can recover ROM ?
Can i just put some WM6.5 to SD card and recover it to phone?
(which wm6.5 rom is better? allso interest in Russian input support)
You still have access to the boot loader - as you see the confirmation of the initial SW stack components on the screen. Your device is not "bricked" yet
First step is to get back the OS which you need to get the USPL loaded temporarily. So get the stock ROM: just call the normal installation process while the device is connected to the PC.
Now follow the instructions of the cooked ROMs - I will not repeat them here.
So, i can`t get my data back, anyway ?
Well, if the device does not boot the OS, then also the FAT file system is not available where the files reside that hold the data. I have never seen that a new flashing of the OS would leave the other data intact or even accessible (if you knew methods to get them back from there). The initial boot of the OS after flashing will newly create all databases from scratch and thus kill all old items anyway - no hope here.
So quite frankly - yes all your data (on the device) are gone and the only hope is that you will at least get back the OS flashed and the device usable again.
thnx for the answers.
one question only - can i update ROM my vox from SD card only ?
(i have a problem with mtty connection (windows7) )
Not easily - look up the forum and wiki for the "goldcard method". It is much easier to connect to another PC and flash from there.
Once you did USPL you can flash easily from SD-Card (check the Wiki)!
He would need to permanently replace the stock-bootloader with the USPL first and for this he needs again a PC connection, or? I would leave the bootloaders onboard intact - as if anything goes wrong in replacing the bootloader your device is bricked for sure!
holly sh*** !
Today my phone start work normally without any reason !
And i undestood that the problem with some connections inside the phone.
I backedup all data that i need, then dismount everything and then mounted it back. During i played with that it backs again to bootloader on start few times.. now it works, but i still not found what the problem is... seems like something broken in motherboard or somethin like that
Hi,
i have the same problem.
the device doesnt start.
I have access to mtty in bootloader mode.
I can update the device, but after update iam again in bootloader mode.
No chance to leave.
Anybody an idea?
If your device does not boot at all (Green LED - then nothing):
- check your SIM Door, open and close completely to reset the switch inside the device.
Fixes if you are stuck in the bootloader (3 color screen):
1.) try to get the OS re-initialized (Cold Boot with keyboard):
- press both softkeys and keep them pressed until the last step - never release them
- press the power key to switch on the device
- wait for a prompt on the screen
- release the softkeys
- push the "Send Button" (green key)
- device should reboot and OS is initialized
If this does not work, next step:
2.) load a complete ROM of the operator - they usually contain all parts of the ROM (splashscreen, IPL, SPL, Radio and OS) and they match the security settings of the built-in SPL. This should bring back your device to operation state.
If this does not work you have a broken device or defective USB connection (PC port, cable or USB on the device).
If that worked, then you can start flashing custom ROMs using the USPL as the cooks describe their procedure.
ok,
i have two problems..
first the format command is not known in Bootloader mode
and the second.. i cant flash an other image than theImages from the provider.
Instructions below are not valid for VOX (they are for Tornado), please ignore
You have to enter when MTTY is connected:
1.) press enter -> you see the prompt
2.) enter "info 2" with out the "" and press enter
You get a list of information
3.) "format BINFS XY00000" where XY00000 is the calculated size of your ROM
3.) will not work if you miss 2.)
About loading cooked ROMs, please look up the relevant threads, they describe what to do in detail.
thanks
I came home and was reading your thread.
As i connected the phone and startet it... everything works fine without any impact

In some cases - just remove battery, after plugging it on - windows should boot.
ruustart - should end any ruu comands and boot system - just connect device and inside mtty and after issuing password BsaD5SeoA type ruustart - will reset device.

Don't remember, but I play more with Tornado currently. Vox is still on Stock ROM and bootloader is secured there (unless you flashed USPL). Google for the strings above in the XDA scope. HTC devices often share similar bootloaders.

hi ,
i also have same problem
but my mtty says invalid command
The SPL of the VOX is not allowing you to do this, possibly as there is no method to apply a Super-CID to this device afaik. Another method to bypass this however exists using the USPL, but I am not sure if this "format BINFS <size>" works on the USPL as well. It works ok on the stock SPL for the Tornado.
but i cannot use uspl
it says invalid vendor in while using RUU
so i must flash uspl
