has anyone every cooked a custom ROM for the wizard for PDA use only? Most kitchens tend to include all the phone-related files, since obviously it would be used as a phone/pda.
I just recently upgraded to the Wing for $50, so I figured I can still get a LOT of life out of the ol' Wizard with WM6 on it. Was just wondering what would be a good ROM to maximize the inbuilt space for PDA-use only progs. (it does function well for simple portable gaming and mp3/video player) Of course auto-updating programs wouldn't be useful, since the phone wouldn't have a sim card to use to connect to gprs/edge...
[update] perhaps this is a very nonsensical thread...since rethinking the whole situation, the wizard isn't a phone that can free up space, because you dedicated less space to the rom...(i think the hermes was one that was referred to with that capability)...[/update]

do not be fooled by new touch releases, then...
it is waste of space and idea loss.
start from...xplore 1.1 then you will have...overall sight of wizard potential.
then, you will find kitchen...
then add tcpmp + plugins(0.81 + wise plugs),
then try gsplayer and DO NOT touch...touch.
golden era's dead,imo.
(you may kick me...but NOT in head)..plz.
yeah i figured touch would be a waste of space, but in general, have you or anyone ever built a custom rom, removing all the phone app related files? i think it took a few megs or so in the sys folder, if i remember correctly. Probably wouldn't hinder the use of the phone as a pda??
ahh, i figured out, what you need...
soft is not whole thing; if you want to get some space..., it may be good idea to remove:
- stk service,
- second one,
- radio/phone drivers,
- camera driver(~3 mb mem more, and >3-4.5 mb rom space more),
- wlive, if you aren't slave of the BIG one,
- optimise caches,
- do NOT try to use roms/kitchen roms with 8-10 pos kaiser ****(connmgr...)..
- if you do not need bt, wifi, you may want to remove its drivers too(drivers, files, and reg), you may try to kill whole connmgr in such case(deletion of whole thing in kitchen, hklm/init, files, etc),
- if you do not need java - remove midlet thing,
- remove mms,
- theres MUCH more to do...then(and i mean it).
you may take a look what potential have old roms for custom(i mean CUSTOM) build...
http://mobione.pl/forum/index.php/topic,663.0.html
despite using(rarely) phone module...
i can guarantee, that wizard will be MUCH better than you saw in that post with disabled phone module, just there's no possibility, that will be slower, than this.
i can say ,that wiz may have ~40-41 mb mem free, and whole storage free after such cuts.
then, you may use double_ofour's kitchen to make whatever you want to do....only thing is to find GOOD base rom, or good EDITABLE flash ROM(i mean RGU dumpable). xplore1.1 is good base for experiments, but mr.frazz's and double_ofour's roms are best for such things(i mean old ones, at last..). 1413 is most useful, imo.
----
sorry, masters of roms edit..it is just like i see weak wiz... it does not need new, 400mhz+ soft.
it is wizard.
sorry for bad english....
[update]
after your [update] i think it was not neccesary what i said.......
...
good luck, where is that new iphone skin, then...
lol...i think i'm gonna try to cook a rom without all those drivers anyway...perhaps keep the wifi aspect...just so that i can use it as a tablet-pc-like device around the house...surf the internet or im for free...well...assuming that it all works without the use of a simcard...since it's really not going to be dialing out anywhere. if so...cooking the roms without all that excess will supposedly free stuff up, since there'd be less files in /windows directory...it'll free up some ram, so that i could run the ol' gba/nes emulators...so...it might be worthwhile to cook something very bare...just for those needs...and removing the phone files...does free up a few files...and definitely that extra space...which could then be used to implement some basic files for definitely convenience...
just think why i am keeping >34 mb mem free possibility(yes, 32 mb gba translated to english mother 3 rom......).
simpliest thing is to use xplore 1.1, core kitchen(old one), remove camera drivers(hklm/drivers builtin /camera , cameradriver).
nothin more..
you may just remove poutlook, wifiinit, and other useless thing from /winodws/startup, and use wise(i mean wise) cache management( sd card =128 kb, cache mirror 128 kb, sound cache stripped to 256 kb,, glyphcache to 131072, and that's all....
you may get 36-38 mb mem free w that method w/o problem.
whatever you gonna do, good luck....
Update: 04/22/08
This is a release for the ROM and the porting kitchen. It does not port XIP's, yet, just SYS folders, but it does what it needs to do. I haven't tested it in more than just one port, though. The one I did test came out perfect, though.
The ROM has 63.XXmb FREE storage and 31.XXmb free with SD RAM.
To flash it you MUST have a HardSPL'ed Herald or Wing and a microSD card. Just place the HERAIMG.nbh into the SD card's root directory. Do NOT rename it to anything else. Then hold the camera button down while you turn on the device and then press the volume down slider when it asks you to. Wait until it says it's done. I haven't tried to run any activesync other than to an exchange server so tell me if that isn't working.
I'll be done with finals this week and then I can finally work on the other kitchen.
I'll upload it when I come back from school.
Update #2: 04/14/08
Just added a screenshot. Mind you, this is WITH SD card AND after I installed my "troubleshooting" tools.
Update: 04/14/08
60mb of FREE storage space.
32mb RAM with no SD
30MB RAM with SD
No compression (I'll probably released a UPX'd version, as well...)
Fixed all bugs found so far except for two. Maybe you guys can help me figure them out... the sad part, I've fixed these same two bugs countless times in my other ROMs, but I just can't remember how I did it. lol
1. Comm Manager: It doesn't matter what comm manager I place in there, it still boots up the built in comm manager. (The one that Tmobile has anyways.)
2. The Vibrate button. I have all the files and I have it setup so that it vibrates when you hold down the comm button, BUT it keeps trying to open VoiceCMD even though I deleted all visible entries for it...
Update: 04/03/08
Ok guys. Here's some info on my current projects.
1. Just2Clean is almost done. I just have to fix some bugs. The OEM is from an unreleased Wing ROM, the SYS I ported over using... well keep reading.
2. My phone currently is running currently has 62.38mb total of storage... and I was able to shrink the extrom and use that ROM space for storage. Granted, you need to have HardSPL and a memory card for this to work, but it's awesome. This ROM is also so small and stripped that it's the fastest ROM I've ever used and I don't even have any tweaks on it, yet.
3. Kitchen 1: PPCBuildOS: Unfortunately, I haven't had time to work on porting it, but after I get Just2Clean fixed, I'll be working on it. AWESOME kitchen. The creator is so willing to help, too. Made me a developer of the Atlas section (Herald compatible so no worries for those Herald users.)
4. EasyPortKitchen. So far, I've got it porting SYS folders just fine. I haven't been able to setup XIP porting, but that's because I still don't understand the process behind it. If someone wants to explain it to me, I'll be able to finish this kitchen. So far, Just2Clean had its SYS folder ported in this way.
EDIT: 5: I plan to release the ROM with language packs for the kitchen. Then you can just check on the language you want the ROM to be in while building the ROM.
New Post
Ok, change of plans.... I'm currently working with the makers of PPCBuildOS to make an Atlas/Herald version of their kitchen. It's currently being developed with JustClean, but it will eventually be released with my Just2Clean. (That'll be the new name.) That kitchen is AWESOME, btw. ^_^ Makes my kitchen look like a pitiful script kiddy toy.
Just2Clean will be a WM6.1 stripped down better than JustClean was, more modulized and with its OEM based on an unreleased ROM.
I'll keep you guys posted but I'm not sure of how much I can talk about now that I'm helping develop the Atlas/Herald side of it...
Old Post
A few things that I've been thinking about on my "off" time... basically, the time that I'm just unbusy enough to have my own personal thoughts outside of work or school related ones. lol
All these ROMs would be compatible with my kitchen.
1. SuperClean - A ROM built with lots of compression and minimal programs. The point of this is to be the "bigstorage rom" where you can't even flash it normally because it doesn't meet the size requirements of the RUU/SPL.
2. JustClean2 - Based on an unreleased OEM from an unreleased ROM that I made before I switched to WM6.1. It's based on a Wing ROM... but it has potentials. It just feels faster and it seems to take less space than the current Herald base I'm using. Not to mention that some people are having issues with Herald based ROMs and some bluetooth enabled items.
3. OldClean/NewClean - SuperClean and JustClean2 may have both WM6.0 and WM6.1 versions... I find that, although WM6.0 is slower, it also takes up less space (and therefore can net more storage space) and some people don't seem to like a lot of the WM6.1 features.
What do you guys think? Which would you like to see first? If any? Any better ideas? (And no, no ideas about which programs should be in it, you already have my kitchen for that.) Oh, and the kitchen would become modular, the JustClean1 ROM would be released seperate from the Kitchen.
I'm itching for a ROM as quick as my old WM6.0 ROM, but I haven't had as much luck getting the Herald ROM to run as quickly.
BTW, has anyone ever used my old CleanROM with the Herald keyboard driver? Did you ever have any issues with it?
I vote for a newer WM6.1 built than the "old" 19xxx - there were newer ones outside before bepes kitchen ROM but thy had ActiveSync problems...
Maybe now there are new builts.
OR if not i vote for WM7...hahaha
ALLL the "clean" crap doesn´t make sence to me... why to have a clean rom and then install all by cab.
I ONLY cooked a rom because i was sick of installing all cabs
lol
Good to see ur back to cooking roms
Well i Love the functions of WM6.1 so just about and clean 6.1 rom you cook will be great
so i'd guess from ur descriptions that'd be SuperClean...
Edit: I also use the Office suit a lot but i can add that by a cab, since i know most clean roms dont have it since it takes quite a bit of space

These ROMs are meant to be used with my kitchen. That way they can add what they want and what they want only. Some people just don't use any programs and want the available storage space for other reasons. (Like photos.)
The SuperClean would attempt to create a lot more free space in the ROM. (For example, I have 54.93mb total (I've got a few files saved so I'm not sure how much I had free at first) currently in the ROM I'm currently using and it's no where near optimized and it's one of my fattest unreleased "SuperClean" ROM's that I have ever made.
Imagine being able to get 60mb free WITH all the apps that you use. It would be awesome.
Well at the moment i have a 4GB Memory Card, but reguardless i preffer to use cean roms as they tend to be faster and have more program memory available.
Especially since i use Point UI and dont rly care about today plugins
I vote for just a 6.1 Rom w/ good tweaks (and ready to go for tmo usa) and no extra programs.

And THAT is the problem ... even with 63MB program storage... we will NEVER get more than 32MB free RAM (memory)
to get more storage for apps or even cach is not the problem. BUT getting more RAM is not possible.
But as a clean rom for cooking - OK
but then:
- no skinning
- default looking
- only left what is needed for running system (phone, base apps)
and than we can cook....
thx
AND why don´t we have this OS "System 5.2.19202 (build 19202.1.0.0)"????

I'm currently learning how to port properly for that specific reason. 19202.1.0.0.
As far as the skinning goes, the final should have the option to have no skin. I'll work on that. The base should have a few things disabled. I'm also working on that. As far as RAM goes, I've gotten up to 38mb free before, but it was missing a lot of items... I could always just modulize the whole ROM and let people choose EVERYTHING down to if they want bluetooth support or not. This can net some pretty nice amounts of free memory. It's just more work for me.
I am also thinking of modulizing the MUI's in the ROM, effectively allowing people to just download language packs. Doubleclick on the file, wait until it does its thing and then you have a French ROM, or a German ROM, or whatever...
It's not that I can't do it, it's that it takes time.... time I don't have.

It seems to me that the 6.1 ROM is a bit faster when doing some things (like opening the windows folder using total commander) is involved - but I think the 6.0 can be tweaked to be just as fast? I would be very excited to try either your SuperClean or JustClean2 as long as the ROM is based on Wing.
I used your CleanROM for quite a while with NO problems but on a Wing.

Updates on the first page!
So it will come with the same kitchen like JustClean?
62 megs...sounds cool. I hope it will be possible to stuff the rom with office etc. and flash it as usual.
Not with the same kitchen. With a new GUI kitchen that the guys at PPCkitchen.org have made for other phones. I'm just helping them port it to the Herald/Atlas.
The EasyPortKitchen is something you would use to port a ROM.
You can install anything you want on it. All my ROMs are always minimal and allow you to install whatever you want on them.

Version 2: Changelog:
4MB pagepool - almost 33mb of free RAM
Based off of JustStableV2's Build 5 (unreleased) - Everything updated in JustStableV2 Build 4 also in this build
Based off of 5.2.21048
More of the ULDR partition removed. Now it's COMPLETELY gone.
Still LZX compressed and stripped on non-essentials
Also included: IS versions. (Internet Sharing)
This is a version of JustStable with the following changes:
1. Stripped of ALL non-essential programs. (Including NetCF.)
2. LZX compressed
3. ULDR removed!!! A first for the Herald. This saves around 3MB that is normally used as storage for “windows updates” which are never released. lol
All in all you get:
74+mb FREE of Storage Space!
29-30MB FREE of RAM WITH a 6mb pagepool
Due to the removal of the ULDR, the pagepool CANNOT be changed. (Although, I haven’t tried using the old way of changing the pagepool…)
Get the newest version here. (Click on the JustROMs link.)
Warning: This HAS to be flashed through an SD card.
Let me be the first to say Thank you so much Ivan. This is the micro ROM I've been waiting for. I can't even describe this ROM in words yet. It's an extremely fast installation because it's so clean. With the latest ioLite Manila2D installed, it still runs 22MB of free RAM. This is the best you'll get I assure you with the Herald if you are into the Manila2D thing like myself.
Question: Have you tried using 4MB Pagepool with your JustStable, Ivan? How well did it run? Will the Herald get more free RAM if so?
Micro ROM
Ivan this is super. I love this micro rom. Wow its super fast. Thanks!
I love it cuz I can put on just what I want. How the Hell did you get soooo much Memory? Awesome!

Just use a pagepool changer on the NBH file and you can set it to 4mb before you flash it.

Yeah, I tried using a PagePool Changer but it didn't work. It's grey out and you mentioned it on your post prior to my download and attempt to changing it. That is why I'm requesting a 4MB PagePool if possible. But even at 6MB, it's has incredible amount of free RAM for the herald with the latest Manila2D that is a resource hog compared to older versions like in Tran's OTP.

Are you using the newest version of pagepool changer? The first time I did it, it didn't work, the second time, with a different version, it worked.
Thanks Ivan. I downloaded the newer version of PagePool Changer from Sept 08 and it worked. With just Manila2D installed, it's at 26MB! A clean install with JustStable at 4MB PagePool gives 31MB of free RAM. This is the most free storage/ram anybody has ever created for this phone. You are a true asset to this forum and HTC/Micosoft should be paying you if they keep selling the Herald/Wing .

Is there a list anywhere that tells the difference between the "full" version and the "micro" version? I know the Micro is JUST what comes with WM6.1, but since I don't know what that is, I'm not sure what's been added for the full version. I guess I could get both and write down a list myself of the differences, but since I'm lazy I figured I'd ask first to see if this had been done anywhere.
Hey Ivan LOVE this ROM... damn you are amazing man mad props to you.
Just one problem... I don't know if it's just me but some programs won't open. I don't get an error or anything. The little busy icon appears then quickly disappears then... nothing. I can't open Advanced Config or Ing Change Font...
I reinstalled Advanced Config and reseted and turned off the phone but... still nothing... Any reason why it wouldn't be working?
EDIT:
Oh haha nevermind I needed to install .net compact framework.

The Micro doesn't have a lot of things.
Amongst them:
QuickMenu
wktasks
.NetCF
The Canvas Dialer
The modified taskbar icons
Mortscript (for the wing versions that use the multibrowser button)
OperaMini
The newer version of IE (which takes more space)
The extended Explorer
The Rhodium Notification Enhancements
The HTC calculator
HTC Home
The keyboard skin
MyCPL
The new Volume Control system
The deactivated Rhodium Menu Enhancement (it's there to keep the notification enhancement working due to dependencies but it itself isn't working.)
The outlook enhancements
GoogleMaps
RandomAccess (the contacts quick alphabetical bar)
more modified icons around the system
Yet more modified icons around the system
Touch Responce (the force feedback)
I think that's all.
And the Payload has been modified to remove the ULDR (update partition which isn't used anyways.)

like i said, sms works beautiful, i just cant send or receive mms, and the oz .cab won't work. should i use a different arcsoft build for this rom? I'm running spb mobile shell 3.0 and sometimes the shortcuts dont like to work after its been running for a while, but when i select it from the start menu it fails too. uninstalled and reinstalled it 3 times, did a hard reset, installed it on both the phone and sd card, always the same result. it's not super important because i use yahoo and i forward my im's to my phone when i'm not online. but i cant see my friends list that way.
even with this minor issues i'm having, i still love the rom.
Phone is IMATE JASJAR

I agree with you, it already switched, flash from here with Ranju's - v7.7: WM6.1 Pro but I want to try with someone else, that's fine, but there are few problems with crashes ring, so I want to try other versions, and 6,5 even be convinced that flash is the best with windows hp, not windows7 as my.
Take a deep look at this thread here:

Dig & read all of information you might need before you start playing with your device..
And remember,,there's no such thing as "best" cooked ROMs.. I can say,,you gain something you lost something..
let colleagues give any ideas, know how to flashing your handset, clear to me is that rom has cooked things in more or less, before I put the rom on top, I've changed three of these, but still had some problems with them
Try them all till you get your personal best

What about free ram, 15mb if no benefit from it because they quickly drop to 9mb and some applications refuse to work, an example of the chamber under 9mb stops working, no photo, but this is a problem

Hello folks,

Background info:
I have found that every ROM I use will start out being very snappy and lean but after a few months of use I notice that performance degrades quite a bit, even with 16+MB of free RAM. My theory is that the more files are put into the /windows folder, the slower the ROM goes (due to the fact that windows mobile uses a ROM image rather than the file system for the OS.)
I was able to successfully cook extendir into a T-Mobile Wing ROM unsing SuperJustKitchen 0.9. Thanks ivanmmj! I was wondering if anybody was interested. If anyone is interested, I need a recommendation for a good file host to upload this.
Here are the RAM statistics with a 6MB pagepool, CommManager and ActiveSync running in the background and the filesystem cache enabled.
13MB free right after boot 17MB free after ~20 seconds (5MB "magically" appears then.)
Same, but without filesystem cache enabled.
15MB free right after boot 19MB free after ~20 seconds.
I haven't tried running Oxios and looking at the results. I don't like the way it frees up RAM for S2U2. It isn't cooked into the ROM either.
ROM is build 23658(LZX compressed) with 45MB free storage memory.
Programs installed:
Windows Media Player
Remote Desktop Mobile
Internet Sharing
Internet Explorer 6
Office 2010 with OneNote
XdaShutdown
10 button touch commManager
Bluetooth FTP Explorer
Connection Setup 1.5 (no ADC so you have to run this if you want MMS/Data.)
Games installed:
Mobile Mines
Bubble Breaker
Solitaire
Chess

Next thing:
Now I've noticed that when I cook only mHub into the ROM, the camrea works but windows media player fails to play videos. When I only cook mHubVO into the ROM windows media successfully plays videos but the camera does not work. When I cook both into the ROM, everything works fine. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem.
Next next thing:
I'm looking at all the modules loaded by the executables running in kernel mode (gwes, filesys etc.) and I'm wondering if perhaps we can cut/swap a few of them out of the ROM. Same thing with the drivers that the OS loads. Has anyone tried this? I'd really like to know if anyone has anything to say for this.
Questions, comments and suggestions are all welcome!
Anything special when it comes to installing ? SD card setup and such. I'll give it a try.

Nothing special. It's LZX compressed but still RUU compatible. It's barely over 50MB. Thanks for trying my ROM, there's not much that's special about it besides extendir. If you want MMS support you'll have to go to "Settings" > "Connections" > "Connection Setup". Please let me know if you find any bugs.
Will do, just give me a few days. Been awhile since I've played with my Wing.
I too have noticed slow downs, lags and such. Find myself using HtcClaysSuperFast 1.6 on my G1 because it's just so damn fast. I find I want fast & instant reponse versus bells and whistles nowadays. I've flashed all the new stuff for my Windows & Android but get annoyed at all the waiting. Speed is King....that's what caught my eye.
Where is the ROM?
The link is not available...
So can we get the link working again.
Motherboard fried on old computer. Lost all my backups, roms & such unless I can slave the old hard drive. As previous post said, link is down. Can you fix? Thx.
Hey guys,
Sorry I haven't been on here in a long time. I've been busy with school and other things. Anyway, I recently reformatted my computer and I don't think that I backed up my ROMs. I'm going to try to find time to make the ROM again. Sorry about that. If anyone had a copy of the original ROM then I would be very thankful it one of you could mirror it.
Thanks for your effort!
I'd love to try that on my herald also.
And plus..it would be great if it is cooked with manilla2d too )
Ok, I can start downloading tools/building next week. Tomorrow is my final day of school and I have a few other things I need to do this week. Sorry about this.
ohhh i want to try but the link is dead.
I would love to try this, I just unloaded the JustHome Rom I have been using for almost two years now and am trying out some newer roms to find a good mix of speed and function. Most of the roms seem to work well and then slow down like you said. This would be a fantastic improvement. To bad I missed out on the original upload.
sry for reviving a dead thread! it though would be great, if you'd upload the rom again!
