Hmm, right place? Tytn II vs Diamond - General Topics

Hello, I'm due an upgrade on Orange very soon, and I'm basically going to go either for a TytnII or a Touch Diamond, but I'm wondering which one is for me.
I've been browsing the Diamond forums a lot recently, and following Tytns progress, and working in a phone shop I've been lucky enough to play with both, albeit briefly.
For me, I'm going to be using data a lot, probably going to want to use Messenger etc.
Whats the QVGA vs VGA argument like? Because I've noticed the Diamonds screen real estate is pretty poor, compared to the Diamond.
I have no reason to use TouchFlo because I'd much rather use SPB Mobile Shell
Whats the cooked ROM situation for Diamond? Mature I am guessing? Processing power vs. Diamond?
I'm just looking for a well thought through comparison, really
Thanks in advance

not even in the same class .... does the tittan have a tv out port??? diamond has one.... so what do u think ... like i said $>not even in the same class<$

what about tytn 3 vs diamond???

To buy or not to buy, that's the question... ;-)

Hi all!
I'm trying to make up my mind on whether or not to get a Touch Cruise...
My current shortlist is:
HTC Touch Cruise
Glofiish X800
(waiting for a VGA-unit with enough RAM & preferably a GPU)
Who can sway my mind in any direction here?
My usage profile is: a couple of SMS'es per day, perhaps a MMS as well. A couple of (short) calls per month(!). Occasional GPS'ing (got a GPS in the car, so don't really need it for that). Some web browsing via WiFi. Watching some videoclips and/or listening (via A2DP) to MP3's in the bus to/from work (about 1 hour in total each day).
Is the Touch Cruise up to this all, both processing-wise and battery-wise?
Eten Glofiish should be the best if you need a VGA in qVGA' size!
Regards,
Carty..
buy Cruise today and a vga model with enough ram tomorrow
The glofish is too slow and 64 Mo ram is poor

Correct! VGA is not that necessary in a device with 2.8" screen.

Is the difference between VGA & QVGA clearly visible:
when watching a videoclip?
when using the UI & programs?
with photo's?

i-Mate Ultimate 9502
Since 9502 is not on the market yet, and seems not to have official reseller in Europe, target is TC...
Forget Eten untill they change chipset, which currently doesn't support more than 64MB RAM. Or wait...
I mate 9502 is nice but 200g is heavy

I had a similar decision to make. VGA is nice, but it seems that it's only a detail like USB 2.0 (the phone still isn't faster only because it uses USB 2.0). Many people told me, that on 2,8" you can't see a difference between VGA and QVGA. In fact they were concerned, that VGA will cost more CPU Power and as a result, drain the battery more than a QVGA device and make it slowlier.
Maybe the Eten has a better panel (I mean better viewing angles for example). One thing I noticed was that the support of Glofiish should be worse. But thats only what I heard in Germany. Maybe support in your country is better.
vga can give issues when using pocketpc progrms which are not vgaAware plenty of threads about it in universal and other forums

Who knows of any site where there are some GOOD comparison photo's of a VGA screen vs. a QVGA screen? Preferably 2 units showing the same thing in VGA vs. QVGA resolution.
I'm having the same problems.
I can't really decide between the:
Polaris
Kaiser
I don't realy care about the VGA display, but a bit more color depth would be nice...
Does anyone have some personal experience whith these two?

To be honest, I've pass by the same reflexions/questions as you. I've finally choose to buy the Cruise and I really don't regret my order. This mobile really impress me. It is the right evolution and a perfect mix between the p3300 and the p3600 + the Touch function. The Touch will allow you to do a lot of things with your fingers.
I've installed a MicroSD card 4Gb (SanDisk). This mean that this mobile support High Capacity card (good point !). The GPS is simply perfect ! Previously I've used a TomTom Go 910 and sincerely I don't regret it.
Well.. I'm a bit an HTC addict but I really think that this Company is currently making the best Windows Mobile machines.
Now about Eten, what I heard is that they are good but not really reliable (some customer complain about problems with the recent machines). Personally I've worked with an Eten G500+ some months ago. Good in GPS but not (really not) so good as the HTC's as phone.
Hope it help.

I have the Touch Cruise and i know the display of the Kaiser and i have to say that the display of the cruise shows the colors much better than the Kaiser.
But, thats not the question, the cruise is smaller, lighter and has the flush screen, but the Kaiser have a keyboard which is the only positive point for the kaiser
I will sell you my Kaiser?

Tnx, I was leaning towards the Polaris anyways...
Considering that the keyboard slide can wearout after sometime...
I have the Hermes, and that's why the Kaiser was an option.
Don't forget that the Kaisers keyboard can turn fragile after some time (that's my fear), the kaiser is also way thicker and heavier than the polaris. And the kaiser will cost € 100,- more than the polaris.
If I were you, I'd go for the polaris. Just like I did

There's only a 40€ difference between the Polaris and the Kaiser...
The Polaris is around 630€ and thats the cheaper between the two.
So the money wasn't an aspect, I only wanted some personal oppinions about the two to help me decide

Personally, I'm a bit skeptic with PDA with keyboard. First because of the mechanic that may have problems with the time. And second because the PDA is more thick.
If you plan to wrote a lot, the keyboard may help. If not, the stylus is okay.

ETEN Glofiish X800 vs TyTNII?

Hello guys...
After some technical problems with my Kaiser (now in service), and after realizing that I don't really use the hardware keyboard all that much (a major criterion when I chose Kaiser), I was thinking of trading it for the ETEN Glofiish X800. I'm tempted by the 500MHz processor and the brilliant VGA screen, however are there any opinions on how well it fares in other issues? GPS, overall speed etc?
Thanks in advance,
t
if you don't want a keyboard anymore, you should maybe also consider the HTC Touch Diamond...very small and light, nice vga screen, gps, 4GB internal memory, etc.
Hmmm you could be right, I didn't think of that. Its processor is running @ 400MHz instead of 500, though, and a full €100/$160 more than the X800, so I'm not sure how it compares. One big plus is the wealth of custom ROMs lying around - haven't seen anything for the ETEN device...
Thanks for the advice
btw, don't forget to consider the iPhone 3G too...maybe not so interessting if you have a lot of windows mobile specific applications...but for normal use like mail, phone, calendar, etc it can be interessting.
anyway, before buying any new device, I can advice everyone to wait like a month or two, untill the iPhone 3G gets available everywhere. I hope the prices of many other windows mobile devices will drop after the 3G introduction.
the diamond and 3g are very comparable device, still the diamond costs 500euro and the 3g will be something like 300euro (without contract) in Belgium. so i expect htc will have to drop theire prices to concurrent with apple.
Ah no, not interested in iPhones! Not only do I need the Windows functionality indeed, but I have developed a certain anti-anti-establishment feeling against it, I just hate how 'hip' it has become
Still competition is good nonetheless. Now, I wonder, why on earth hasn't the TyTNII come down since its launch, at least in Greece? Still going for €800!
i too still prefer windows mobile because of some applications I couldn't live without...but after playing for a while with an iPhone I was really impressed with its responsiveness and stability. It couldn't nearly do as much as what I can do with my windows mobile device, but the things that the iPhone could do were working very well, very smooth. And that's something I can't say from my pocket pc. But anyway, I already got used to the many crashes and softreset that it now doesn't really bother me anymore
So have I, have used Windows for so long I'm all too used to it The firts major disadvantage of the iPhone would be the GPS functionality - what would I do without my iGo?
So, anyone with an idea about the ETEN vs HTC?
eten FTW! i just wished it had a BIGGER vga screen like the iphone! but the gps sirf III kills that iphone AGPS for sure! plus i hate mac stuff!
just wished our x800 had more internal RAM! 64 is not enuff!
I had an X800 before I got my Touch Cruise and I have to say, the only thing better than the TC is the VGA screen, other than that, it kept developing a Micro SD problem where the locking mechanism would break and the SD card wouldn't lock in place (I had one replacement unit, and an attempted repair, and it seems other people have had the same problem) It is also significantly slower than my TC (when you press a menu option in TomTom, you can see the menu layers change it is that slow!). Couple that with the recessed screen so it's almost impossible to press the x button without using the stylus, and I'm much happier with the touch cruise than the X800. I won't buy another E-Ten device as they seem to have very poor after sales service, and almost non-existent support for European users!

TyTN II -> Touch Pro... Is it worth it?

Hey Raphael / Touch Pro users...
The Touch Pro was recently released in South Africa and im considering the move from my TyTN II to the Touch Pro!
There is alot of nice looking technology in the Touch Pro and its a beautiful looking device... Im just wondering if people are as unhappy after moving to the Touch Pro as they were after moving to the TyTN II / Kaiser???
Im enjoying the TyTN II, after alot of tweaking i managed to get it feeling good and with the addition of CorePlayer 1.2.5 we can now get around the disgusting video playback issue!
So my question is...
Is the Touch Pro worth it??
What do you guys think??
Thank you!!!!!!
I think it's pretty much on what you need? TP is my first WM device and I'm had up and downs experience. I know it's a new product but just the simple phone function is having issue (not for everyone, I have the mute problem).
I like the screen resolution, the speed is acceptable. The design is great. Anyway it's a cool phone. If you love tech and have the budget, TP sure a nice toy to play around with.
I'm still using my Kaiser as well, but yes I was very happy with the upgrade.
Next is replacing the Diamond with the Touch HD
It's a good question. I heavily used a TYTN II in place of a Blackberry and when I changed jobs in September I bought a Touch Pro and don't use it as much for email anymore, but still use this functionality.
The only thing I miss is the jog wheel, that was very handy although "flicking" the screen to scroll through the mail is just as easy - just different. It's what you get used to.
I have found a number of bugs with the Touch Pro that have been widely discussed on this forum such as GPS lag, answering calls whilst in your pocket etc etc but have cured almost all of them again thanks to responses on this forum.
The Touch Pro is asthetically pleasing where as the TYTN II was purely function over form, and it has really nice touches - such as FM Radio, Opera, YouTube player all built in.
However, am I completely satisfied with the Touch Pro ? No, not completely. The GPS issue is a particular problem as I use it fairly frequently, and I'm noticing that there is an occasional breakup of or jump of sounds - voice calls, MP3's, SMS message tones - like an old record jumping - which to me take the "polish" of an otherwise accomplished device.
If I had to spend my money again at this point in time, I would be hanging on to see what the Xperia was like and then choosing - I will be watching that one with interest myself !
Hey guys!
Thanks very much for the replies, especially Half Penny, that was a very comprehensive reply
Ive only been using HTC devices for 2 months, but ive moved fairly quickly through devices, P4350 -> TyTN I -> TyTN II and i must say that ive come to love the HTC quality, the feel and just the way everything works, which makes me immediately hesitant to move to the X1!
The other issue i have with the X1 (and the Touch HD) Is the WVGA resolution, im worried about compatibility with existing apps, games etc! The X1 is also (in my opinion) an ugly looking device... But (considering i was a TyTN I owner hehe) this doesnt bother me that much!
I want the hardware keyboard, its the reason i moved from "regular" cellphones to these devices, so all the other HTCs and various other devices are ruled out because of lack of the hardware keyboard!
I was hoping that the Touch Pro would iron out a few issues HTC were facing, the poor video playback, the poor 3D performance etc etc... To be honest, if this isnt the case and im not missing that much, i might stick with the TyTN II for a year or so and see what happens (unless i pick up a Touch Pro for a bargain hehe), i love the tilting screen, its something ive come to use alot and im unsure as to why they decided to not include it in their new devices!
Anyway guys, i just thought id open this 1 up for discussion, thanks alot for the great input so far
Pro's and Con's
Whilst the TyTn II is not the most exciting looking device HTC came out with, it was one of the most stable PDA's I have owned. If it had a VGA screen I would have not traded it for the Touch Pro.
OK, the TP is very sexy, has a great screen and keyboard and oodles of RAM. But it has to be the most unstable PDA I have used, with constant glitches and weird errors that cause me to soft reset a couple of times a day. I think there is a real need for HTC to bring out a new ROM build that irons out all the well publicised faults.
Having said that, I love the sheer coolness of this device and the WOW's I get from mates when they see it. So I am pleased I bought it and I wouldn't get rid of it any day soon. I will continue to put up with the glitches and keep checking these forums for solutions.
Would I recommend it? For those who want a functional office device that they toss into a briefcase without a care.... NO!
For those gadget junkies amongst us.... YES!
as for me the TyTn II will be my first and last HTC device
am gonna switch over to Xperia or G1 or even a smart touch phone(samsung-nokia)
cuz HTC dont have good updates and all there roms are useless and LATE

Good thing you're well informed and you know what you're talking about. "will be my first and last HTC device...", "am gonna switch over to Xperia (HTC) or G1 (HTC) or even a smart touch phone"... The only 2 phone models you named are made by HTC.

What phone shall I get?

Well after 3 or 4 weeks with the Touch Diamond I'm going to sell it and buy something else.
The battery life is a bit poor but liveable but the looks of the phone and the user interface don't bother me so I think that's the Diamonds main selling points negated.
What I wanted was like my HTC Elf but more powerful and 3G connectivity.
I thought the Diamond would offer that and does in a way but I just feel that the processing power and RAM is wasted somewhere (VGA?) as it just doesn't impress.
After a few days using my wifes old blackberry I have become a hard keyboard convert so now the brief includes a keyboard.
The phone has to run slingplayer well and basically I'm not looking for a fashion phone just something with good performance and capability. Built in GPS too. TBH I'd rather QVGA as VGA seems overkill on such a small screen.
I've shortlisted the Kaiser.
And the HP IPAQ 914c. I've no experience of these but the spec looks good.
All advice and suggestions welcome.
Ben.
well between the 2 you have shortlisted i would say go for KAISER
its a very nice phone ,has a very good forum here at XDA ,and many interesting projects are going on for the phone
i just bought my kaiser on ebay for $230 the only problem i have had with it is that it is just not as stable as my old tmobile wing/htc herald. but gps is nice and it is way fast. i was going to buy an imate ultimate 9502 but i could not come up with that much money
Thanks.
It is a bonus with the Kaiser that lots are available on ebay.
Just noticed the Touch 3Gs specs are good apart from no keyboard. Should be even quicker than the Kaiser?

[Q] HTC Touch pro or HTC Diamond2?

Hi guys
I am currently staying in Taiwan and I am considering to buy my very first windows mobile phone.
Right now in Taiwan, a HTC Touch costs around $444USD and a HTC Diamond2 around $648USD (Similar cost to a HTC Touch HD).
Because I am a student, I have very limited budget. Both TP and D2 have very similar hardware spec (in terms of processor, memory and ram). And looking at the xds-forum, the TP can easily match D2's software features through a cooked rom.
So here is my question. Is it worth to spend an extra $200USD to buy a D2, instead of a TP?
Thank you~~

Hi, that depends a lot on how you will use the device. The Diamond 2 sure is a lot better for pictures (5mp) and has a better looking and bigger screen to watch videos and use the web for example. And that's all, i don't think there's any real improvements.
The TP has good camera too, (3,2) and the hardware keyboard. I had a Kaiser, and now a diamond 1, and one thing i really miss is playing games with a real keyboard, not only touchscreen and D-pad.
As for the software, i wouldn't mind very much as almost everything in this forum is ported between TP, Diamond 2 and Diamond.
So i would go with the Touch Pro. But that's only my opnion, from someone who never actually had a diamond 2, just reads a lot of posts here.
If i were you i would go to the store, would "play" with both for about 2 hours, than i'd choose.
Good luck with your choice!
