Hi.
Im getting my Blue Angel (XDA IIi) with my next paycheque. But i really want IM with GPRS. I'm thinking about going dual Sim with a T-mobile card just for the webnwalk plan, because O2 charge stupid prices for WAP (£3 per mb)
But i realised you can't use IM with most GPRS providers because the ports are blocked to stop other forms of non profit making communication. So what about setting up your home pc as a terminal service server, and then using termincal service client to access it and use MSN from there.
I e-mailed T-mobile asking if termincal service client was allowed and here was the (relevent part of) the response:
"Using our webnwalk priceplans you would be able to use the terminal service client on your phone in order to access other pcs. The GPRS usage would come out of your allowance any time that you used this service."
Not having my XDA IIi, i don't know if this would work, so could someone test it please.
is this a good idea or should i have stuff thrown at me for even thinking it?
Thanks.
Erm.......... you can use IM on T-Mobile GPRS... I do most days.
Either the supplied Messenger ir Agile Messenger.. works a treat.
I moved from O2 to T-Mobile cos they had no decent GPRS uage plans.. now I get unlimited.... it's great....
Charlie Grillo
another part of that e-mail:
"In terms of MSN messenger, this would not be allowed as part of the terms and conditions of the priceplan. These state that certain things such as VOIP, Messaging over internet and Internet Streaming are not allowed."
Are you on contract by any chance?
TS
I am not familiar with T-Mobiles Terms / fair usage policy, but it seems strage you can use terminal services and not msn messenger - I would have this checked out!
I know that TS works perfectly on the XDA 2 and above, if that helps.
IM on GPRS
Yes, I'm on contract - not PAYG.
I read T-Mobile's T's & C's, but messaging isn't mentioned.. it contains this guff..
To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers, they are not to be used for other activities such as (but not limited to): modem access for computers, internet based video/audio streaming services, peer to peer file sharing, internet based video download and internet based telephony.
hmm.. modem access - a bit restrictive, but as I can't get the damn thing to connect and dial when used as a modem any more it's not a problem (I wonder if they crippled this in their last ROM upgrade as it worked perfectly before...)
bandwitdth
in theory this is possible, but theres no chance of running terminal services/remote desktop from the blueangel over gprs...
the connection is not quick enough.
over wifi its fine but not gprs.
good point
I have done it with wi-fi and 3G - if you are in a 3G area (ha!) you should be OK.
Hey all. I just wanted to give you a heads up. I started a thread on Hofo a day ago. There are actually two about this topic now.
Appearently Cingular had the wireless.cingular.com proxy set on IE. It's in the registry, not in the connection profile. The default connection profile is still wap.cingular without the proxy, but IE will use the proxy.
I assume they did this so that IE could access http://device.home/ the Media Net site, which you need the proxy to access. They did something else to make IE really work right with Media Net, so that's good, but you can't disable the proxy.
This has a few ramifications:
1) IE is slower due to the proxy.
2) The proxy may compress images.
3) You can't access the internet from IE using a Wifi card or if you change your access point to isp.cingular
I started deleting IE connection settings in the registry and managed to disable it. I screwed up the WAP settings in the process. So I have to isolate the registry setting(s) that are specific to this proxy.
It's something we should all do (disable the proxy.) You can still acess it by changing to the MediaNet connection profile should you want to later, but trust me you don't want the proxy set all of the time in IE.
Unfortunatley IE's settings don't have access to edit the proxy setting in IE, it's in the registry only. At least so far I haven't found a setting.
I'll keep you posted. My Treo 750 is appearently defective and I'm working on getting it swapped, so I'm going to be tied up with solving this for at least a day.
Here are two of the threads:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=8553147
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1085384
RF9, just like I posted on HowardForums, please keep us all posted.
Thanks!
I isolated it. To disable the cingular proxy setting in IE:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Internet Settings]
The default setting (that uses the proxy) is:
"EnableAutoDetect"=dword:00000000
Change it to:
"EnableAutoDetect"=dword:00000001
Or simply delete it. It's more of the fact that if it's there and =0 it's used. if it's missing it's not used. But changing it to =1 will also make it disable. This way you can simply change the value back without re-adding the seting back in.
Full details are in my post here:

I will attempt to .cab an .xml file that will allow you to import the change without a registry editor.
Is this key there right after a hard reset or does it only appear *after* the SIM is installed and the device is turned on?

I'm really not sure at this point.
I finally got this registry edit (or "Hack" if you prefer) in to a .cab file that you can download and install without ever installing a registry editor.
It's perfectly safe to use. There are two cab files.
1) To disable the existing proxy server setting
2) To restore the proxy server setting back to the default state.
All it does is change the existing registry value from 0 to 1.
Get it here:
http://www.gadgetech.info/treo/hacks/disableproxy/index.shtml#Download:
Download the two .CAB files to your Treo 750. Just click on it to install it like you would any other .CAB file.
To verify that it's installed. Try to browse to http://device.home/ . If you can get to it the proxy is enabled. If yoiu can't, it's (most likely) disabled.
If you use isp.cingular or a wifi card, of course it will only work if it's disabled.

I just verified. These settings are NOT there before the SIM is inserted. Only after the SIM is registered (SIM inserted, and phone turned on) do those settings become enabled.
Good catch. So it's not hard-coded. It's a carrier preference. I would assume that if I put a non-cingular SIM in the phone this setting would disappear. Palm does specified configuration based on the SIM inserted on thier Palm OS line, I assume they've done this on WM5.
I've been through the MSDN documentation and there's a whole big section devoted to carrier provisioning which is what this is.

Hey,
I'd like to know if there is a solution to give the PIE a special proxy setting via the registry.
Due to some restrictions i am forced not to make general proxy settings in the connection manager, but i want the PIE to route via an proxy. Since PIE doesn't provide a proxy setting within the program i'm wondering, if there is the possibility to do so in the registry....
anyone know how to copy ROM files?? I found a DLL and registry entries for "PorkPie.dll" in the \Windows folder that I think is responsible for the cingular proxy hard coding and other customizations.
RF9, I noticed your Fido logo in your profile... Have you managed to get IE to work with a Fido SIM using this method?
Pls help : Unlocked Treo750 - Not able to view websites
Hi - I bought unlocked Cingular treo750 from US and now using in India. Have setup my ISP and using the Internet. I can now download my emails, use Pocket MSN but unfortunately not able to see any website on IE. It keeps says "Locating" to any kind of website I want to view.
The problem is only on viewing websites. IMAP email and Pocket MSN works perfect therefore I presume the connection is perfect.
Could you please help me on this.
After some time - The message appears "Page can not be downloaded as the connection was lost..."
Thanks very much.

Treo 750 Proxy Disable
Hi RF9
I have been following your thread on getting a treo 750w from Cingular to work on the Fido network. I have tried to change the registry settings as you have described:
- <wap-provisioningdoc>
- <characteristic type="Registry">
- <characteristic type="HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings">
<parm name="EnableAutoDetect" value="1" datatype="integer" />
</characteristic>
</characteristic>
</wap-provisioningdoc>
I got the download, but I am afraid I am not familiar enough to know how to install the changes on my phones software. Could you please do a more step by step explanation for me (us). Everything works on my Fido phone except when I go to a web page I get: "connecting" "locating" and then "page cannot be displayed".
Many thanks for your help. Ian

Enquiring Minds
Please forgive my lack of technical savy; I am really struggling to learn all of this stuff...so my questions might seem a bit "stupid"... (it's just my old age showing!
Could this proxy thing be causing my problems in accessing bank of america's website? I was able to do so just fine on my old Treo 680, nad my AT&T Tilt (I hated that phone!), but on my 750 with WM6, I keep receiving a message that says "For security reasons, your device can't access Mobile Banking" I also cannot access other banking sites as well.
If so, will making these changes cause other issues?
Thanks for your patience and information. You folks here are the best!

Tom, I just tried www.bankofamerica.com and I got into it fine. So this does not seem to be the problem.
About your unit...
Thanks for the reply!
Are you using an AT&T branded 750 with the WM6 upgrade, or a generic or other branded 750? I have the AT&T branded one.
Thanks again for your reply!

Yes, I have the at&t branded with the official WM6 upgrade also. I do have the at&t CapPackage removed per the instructions on this site but all the MediaNet dB is intact.
Cap Package?
I have not heard about that one? Can you elaborate, or point me in the rigt direction? Thansk!
Tom
RF9, this is very similar to what I'm experiencing, but when I go to "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi on\Internet Settings" the EnableAutoDetect value is already set to 1.
I have the AT&T Tilt, which came with WM6.
Here's my problem thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=352064

Hi to All;
Im sorry if im posting this email on a wrong thread. My apologies am not very familiar with this type of threads. I would like to ask for any assistance on my Mobile fone. I bought a Treo 750 AT&T from a friend who works in the States who brought his mobile fone here in the Philippines. I am now using the Treo 750 here in the philippines using a local network provider. I can send sms using the local network but I can't seem to connect to the internet and can't even send an MMS. Ive have tried hopelessly but there would always b e a promp which says" Connecting to : AT&T , connecting to GPRS,3G.." and it can't connect...I also tried to access yahoo and internet explorer but the same thing, could'nt access as well. I tried to ask assistance from the network's wireless center but they said that they could not help me on this problem either. I am no left with an expensive mobile phone with a lot of features, but couldn't use them. I hope somebody can help me with this type of problem.
Best regards,
Abrille
hi all
im new here many thanks for that amazing group here.
i have yesterday upgraded my rom of my at&t tilt (kaiser tytn ii) to the new version, well all looks ok BUT...
since then i cant get internet connection and mms messages.
i have checked it the whole day today with my network company (im in israel) and we have reconfigured the modem connections but nothing its dead.
before i have done the upgrade all was just ok since yesterday its no connection.
i have checked arround and i found that there are many users that have the same problame all around the world.
since any mms message goes thru internet (etc. gprs, edge, hsdpa) i assume that the problame is with the internet connection and that blocks the mms messages.
my cell company told me that as she sees all is ok and i remember my settings too.
also even when i connect my tilt with usb to my computer i cant go on the web bacause it says "no connection".
i assume that they have planted in the registery any value that blocks any internet connection (as gprs etc.) if its not thru the own supllier, i can understand also why but the fact is that i get hspda connection and i see the icon of "connected" but somthing blocks it !!!!!
is there a way how we can digg in and remove that block that dosent allow the internert?????
is there a way to bypass it ????
or maybe i should go back to my old ROM is that possible????
again i remind u that:
1) all worked excellent till yesterday
2) the HSDPA establishes a connection but the explorer is dead.
3) i cant even connect thru my pc with usb while my pc is fully connected via dsl to the internet.
4) all setting are same and at once its "no connection"?
5) i see that meny users have that problame
if there is any way let me know
also how bad and ugly will it be if i go back to my old ROM and how do i do it.
many thanks
tachat.....
run again the remove hidden proxy cab.
what do u mean "hidden proxy"
i never had any hidden proxy before why should i have them now??
how do i find them?
how do i remove them??
thanks

Where did you download the rom from???
I know the one at HTC America is intended & configured for AT&T customer in North America. If a ROM was not released on your local AT&T or HTC site, that may contribute to your issues.
You may want to DL the network configuration wizard & give it a go at reconfiguring your device.
some good news
hi all
many thanks for visniak you were right.
it was some hidden silly proxy that i needed to kick out.
now the internet works great BUT i cant send MMs messages.
the configuratins are all ok (i checked it today with my network company)
they say that thats a ROM problame (means that this might be a problame because i upgraded it to ROM 1.62)
is that right???
is there a solution???
many thanks
it's like BEZEQ and BEZEQINT
each blaming the other.............
I don't use MMS.
But most likely your settings are incorrect.
Does the new AT&T ROM solve the Low Volume when using Bluetooth?
That is the only iserious issue I have with the Tilt.
I have been a Symbian user forever and the AT&T Tilt(Unlocked and using it on another service provider in India) is my first exposure to Windows mobile. I upgraded to the new AT&T Rom(1.62.502.0) and the low bluetooth volume issue is sorted out...I'm using the SE 970 stereo BT headset, which is working fine.(ADVANCE that should solve ur query)
My only issue now is that i am unable to use the Internet Explorer thru GPRS. Strangely i could configure and download my E mails thru Outlook. Also, when I Sync the Tilt with my PC, IE works fine using the net connection from the PC. Any insight/clues why I'm facing this issue?
Apologies if this has already been asked/answered, but have spent the last two days looking for a solution..
When connected via USB I cannot establish an internet connection, unless I delete the T-Mobile proxy setting.
I've applied the regedit edit that's been mentioned as a solution, but this didn't work.
Is there anyway to use the pass through connection without having to delete the proxy everytime?
The main annoyance is that the phone won't sync with my exchange server whilst connected to the PC. I have mail set up to sync with exchange server and all other items syncing with my PC. My Hermes sync'ed with anything and everything.
Thanks
just leave the proxy out.
T-Mobile's proxy is a pain in the arse and causes all sorts of problems.
I deleted the proxy from my connection on t-mobile nearly three years ago and on every single device i have had since. never had a problem since.
If the proxy is there, it affects ALL internet connections, so when you plug it in to your PC, it is trying to go through a Proxy that you can only access over GPRS.
that's why proxies are a PITA and should be deleted permanently.
and no, it should not affect anyhting if you delete it. or not that i have noticed anyway.
Thanks will give it a go when I get home.
Seem to be able to access internet without the proxy, but forgot my usb cable so can't test pass though at work.. fingers crossed!
When I deleted the proxy I couldn't then send SMS texts...?
That's a completely random coincidence. The proxy has nothing to do with SMS whatsoever.
you can of course make sure that you are using GSM for SMS. start>settings>connections>advanced network>SMS
set it to GSM. if this is already set, then it has nothing to do with the proxy.
Says "Your text message cannot be sent" after I removed the proxy. SMS is set to GSM. Could it have altered any other relevant settings? Have put the proxy back now but it still refuses to send the message.
Any ideas?
no, wouldn't have changed anything else. The proxy has no bearing on SMS whatsoever.
Like i said, i reckon it is just a coincidence, otherwise turning the proxy back on would have fixed it.
If it is set to GSM already try the other three settings as well.
and a soft reset of course....
Have found a cable and tested - still no joy after deleting proxy.
Connecting to PC, and items syncing with host PC are fine. Mail syncing with Exchange server fails and can't access internet via pass through.
Browsing and syncing with the exchange server is fine when not connected to the PC.
Btw kempas - SMS works fine after deleting the proxy setting, as it should do.
Steve
on the handset:
start>settings>connections>wifi (NOT Wireless LAN)> network adapters
set the drop down box to Internet.
On the PC:
Open Activesync>File>Connection Settings
Set "This computer connects to" to the internet.
Dunno what it is in vista, i have avoided it like the plague....
I did a soft reset and tried again (a couple of time) with no luck, unable to send text message.
Went to settings, connections and run through the network provider setup wizard, let it reset the phone and tried again. Settings 'seemed' all the same but SMS now sent without issue.
Will try removing the proxy again later and testing with another SMS.
EDIT: removed the proxy and sent an SMS without issue this time... So was a "completely random coincidence" as rhedgehog said.
Still can't access You Tube via it's mobile client though, at least, it still says no videos...
All now appears to do what I expect after removing proxy and following rhedgehog's advice. Pass through now works Many thanks!
Also appeared that the t-mobile proxy blocks Windows live and messenger

No, but it is against the t&cs to use IM software when on basic web n walk. Tmobile block the ports for IM software anyways, it seems for new customers since several old customers managed to get through.....i never could though, so the proxy would make no difference if it is on or off.
I personally am on wnw+ which is TOTALLY worth it for using the HSPA when out with my laptop on location.
Cheers for that. Won't really need messenger to be honest - but the proxy setting interfering with the pass through was annoying.

Log into My T-Mobile or call customer services and get the adult content filter turned off.
I think they blocked it to prevent kids blowing mummy and daddy's credit on watching videos.
Of course, Streaming is also against the T&C's of wnw standard, so it could be that this is why. I'm on wnw+ and had to turn off the filter to get it working.
Yep, that was it. Cheers for the reply...
Hey,
I have got my hands on a BlackBerry Curve 8320 on the T-mobile network. I was wondering how it would be possible for me to use the instant message feature using the wifi option? I was a previous owner of a T-mobile featured MDA as soon as I was linked to any wireless router I had instant access to any of the instant messengers available. Your ingenius help would be greatly appreciated.....
Thanx,
Kuntars
if you have any messenger apps for blackberry you can use them using wifi.. nothing special about that
Kuntars in need of help
I have all the preloded messenger apps like Yahoo, Aim, Msn, Icq etc. the problem is when I try to sign in the program responds "service not enabled for this handheld" When I called my T-mobile my service provider they as usual try to sell me something by telling me that the only way that I could gain access is by purchasing their data plan for $24.99 monthly charge, the reason I feel that their claim is absured is simply cause I had it running on the MDA as i had explained previously.... Is there perhaps another application I must download, or maybe program the phone in some way???
Unless Blackberry can't use Wifi to connect to the internet by default (which is obviously impossible since blackberry is all about internet), they're lying, and you should be able to connect. it might be that your Messenger application (dunno which one it is for BB) can't use Wifi connection (tho this is unprobable as well)
AFAIK, BlackBerry is all about using data plans, whatever they are called.
But, that can vary from provider to provider regarding pricing/charging.
If you are able to surf on internet trough WiFi on that BB device (sorry, I'm using BB Pearl 8100 which has no WiFi, so can't check), you might want to try BeeJiveIM software. It ain't freeware, but there should be trial version.
You also might want to raise your question in Curve section of PinStack forums.
