anyone know of a program that will automatically power on the wifi when a data connection is required?? I would like a program that not only did this, but would attempt to connect to any available wifi access point, and if none were available to then allow the gprs connection and power down the wifi

Click to collapse
Ensure that you enable Wi-Fi in Comm Manager and, of course, configure your connection (WEP or WPA, MAC adress etc.).
Also check the router for broadcast channels... (b,g,b+g)...
The best option is b+g...
make sure you also turn the power up on the wifi connection..
Hello all,
I have just got a Sony X1. It connects to my home wireless fine. My question is once its connected will it automatically do all browsing/downloading/email through the wireless or do I have to tell it?
Im just worried because my daily 3G usage is very high (nearly 10mb yesterday) even though I try and only download large files when connected to my wireless. I want to make sure its not downloading through 3G when the wireless is switched on..
Thanks!
default is using the most accessible connection...
if wifi is connected it won't try to access the internet thru 3G..
you're safe as long as you make sure your wifi is connected and you have an active internet connection
In my case I've seen many times that the phone still uses the 3G connection even if WiFi is available and connected (maybe for power saving reasons?). So I always disconnect the 3G connection when WiFi is active. Currently I use Mortscript to do this for automatically.
If this problem occurs, you can also use a small useful app called NoData
(can be found in the forum)
I have my gmail account linked for pull notifications...
the problem is it will not connect to gmail via wifi rather it olny updates through the 3g data network.
I have checked the advanced settings where the connection type is set to internet but this doesnt change things...
Any suggestions?
make sure you have the wifi connected on and connected to the internet.
also, through the connection tab in settings make sure you have told it that internet connects to wifi,
although, it may be better for you to temporarily disable the data connection whilst you use the wifi if the above doesnt work.
Im for sure connected to my wifi network...
I make the other adjustments...
thanks for the reply!
hi
sometimes wm can be picky like that
why not update over the 3g network?
This comes up becasue I work in the basement of a building with little to no access to cell signal so I can enable wifi and connect but it will not sync wia wifi...
Here's a basic question about the HTC Fuze. If I'm using the Edge network and I turn on wifi, thereby getting a faster connection, do Fuze applications default to the faster connection or do I somehow have to turn off the edge/3G connection specifically. I know I should be able to tell...
I usually have both wifi and edge/3g off. When I need data I turn on whatever i need. You do that thru the communication manager.
I think the real question is with both the Edge/3G on and Wifi connected, where will the data transfer? Through the cell network or the WiFi network?
the icons on the top bar of my device display clear which connection is active
with a data session
when one is active it's the only one being used to access data from the internet
It's possible to have both OTA and wifi active, which is what the OP is driving at. IME a program will find and use the faster connection at startup, but if the program is running on OTA and you connect wifi, a lot of programs won't switch to the faster connection. Again, that's just my anecdotal experience - it's hard to tell which connection is being used in real time.
Hi. I'd like to keep my phone connected to a local Wi-Fi network so that I can access a server on that network. However that network doesn't have a working internet connection. Can I keep my phone connected to Wi-Fi but let it use 3G for internet connection? Thank you
Normally when the WiFi is connected to a network the data is automatically disabled so I'd say no to your question.
But Super Download might help.
Could WiFi always scanning be used in this case perhaps? Try it by disabling your WiFi but leaving that option enabled under the Advanced settings.
Of course it wont work to use always scanning. It even says scanning in the name, meaning it simply allows the locations service to turn on wifi briefly in order to see local networks so it can use them to locate you.
What OP is asking for is not natively supported, and would probably require a bunch of modifications on a deep level.
