Our Little World - General Topics

i know this is not the place for this, i dont even know why am i doing this, but i felt the need to say it: as imperfect as it is, with all our noobs, experienced users, rom cooking just for the fun of it, donations (hell, smb was willing to donate even a whole kaiser!!), advices for free, fun all around, helpful persons willing to help just because we share a common passion...
... all these mean so much to me and in my eyes they are a lot more beautiful than the world we see everyday.
dont know exactly why i had to say this, but please go on and keep it as such. also, thanks to all of you for putting your little brick at the foundation of a beautiful building!
as smb was saying in another post, love is in the air... maybe its the spring...

Although it's a bit twee, I have to agree.
The concept of developers & users sharing ideas and code and actually HELPING each other in return for donations to the level you can afford is a fantastic concept - and one that Microsoft would do well to learn from (amongst others).
The end result is everyone is MUCH happier and the product is much better. The only problem is I suspect nobody on here could make a living from it...

I'm feeling all teary eyed now. But you guys & gals are right. Group hug.

Let's all sing together now.
Koom By Ya...... why am I the only one singing?

Sorry....
I was too busy reaching for the kleenex box

hehe... bunch of nerds... really!!... get all hot and flustered at the idea of a new rom or some cab file... it's so sweet...
isn't there a restaurant in London with no prices on the menu but where patrons pay what they believe the meal is worth? Remember hearing about it years ago. Wonder if they still in business.
Yeah there are some talented cooks/programmers on this site. It's a wonderful site for owners of pda's looking for a little doctoring of their phones and I wish xda-developers.com all the best in the future...

Because...

i must say its very touching what u wrote and very true. even though i am new to xda being here has truly been a wonderful experience.
The amount of knowledge is truly monumental.
now on singing kombaya i need some body to give me a beat ...

its not even about money or anything, its about people. just hearing that laurentius spent one whole day (9am - 12pm) to tweak a new rom for us, for you, for anybody, made me think that passion is everything, or anyway a lot more than what people are forced to do for a living.
ive been reading this forum for over 2 years now and remember a lot of things, funny posts, things that, together with the great pieces of software developed, made my day now and then. thank ya all for this!
as you say, this is a silly thread and should under no circumstances stay especially here under the rom development section. kyphur, related to a discussion from laurentius new diamond rom thread, feel free to delete all these.

as most of you probably, i am user on different forums as well. although some amount of flaming is present here as well, it is under no circumstances comparable to things happening on other sites and im grateful to all of you for this.
maybe we should have the national hymn of xdadev, for example Kombaya, somewhere to be downloaded or at least to be visible.

Me too!
Just wanted to add my agreement and appreciation for all that is offered from xda and the people that make it all work. A heart felt "Thank you very much!"

Delete this thread? NEVER...
I'll just move it to someplace more appropriate (but I did leave a perm redirect so it's always hooked to Kaiser Rom Dev)...

True, true... To be honest the only reason I keep buying HTC devices is xda-developers community Although HTC with their support and behavior is trying really hard to persuade me from these decisions on buying new HTC hardware )

Agreed, if I were head of marketing for HTC I would pay Dutty (amongst others) to continue cooking roms for our devices.

OMG, sensitive nerds! *turns around and sneaks away*

Just to also add few thoughts on this forum.
This year I bought my first ever PDA, and had to go to considerable trouble to have it delivered here. In a country where the concept of customer support is not yet in existence, and with thousand noob questions, this forum has provided all the help that I needed. So, this forum means a lot to people like me who have no access to official customer support services or other facilities available elsewhere.
My only regret is that as yet, I am unable to more actively contribute to the great community here.
Thanks XDA developers and keep it up.

Is there a fresh news about Raptorz WM5.0 saga?
I think for this time this mythical ROM can be transfered by speed 1byte/hour. So...
(found in internet space)
Oooh, fellas.
I have a WM5.0 on my Magician (friend of my friend brother, that working in HTC flash it), but i live in a small village. There is no internet, so i can't upload it. There is no post office like a DHL/FedEx/UPS... And i want to tell you more - there is no electricity and cellular providers... But i REALY HAVE IT!

For god's sake, get over it. If it comes, great. If not, tough. What was the point to your post? Why would you bother writing this when the main thread was locked and there's another one still going?
MODS!! DELETE ME!!!! PLEASE!! (I mean this topic, not me totally!)
I just want to know - is there news.
It has been bad joke or a new hope? It's all.
I'm WAITING for WM5.0 ROM like you.
Great quote.
For all of the stfu ppl, this is a forum, remember?!
Let people talk!
If AlexXF thought it would be a relevant question to him to ask for the rom, he can ask it. If you don't like the topic, don't reply to it.
It would die if you don't.
I think one can ask whatever question he likes as long as he/she does not offend anyone else on this board.
And after 2 weeks, if asked politely, I don't see anything wrong in asking for an update. People ask so many stupid questions on other stuff, what's the surprise if someone asks for progress on such a HUGE thing?
And jimmy-bish, couldn't you just ignore such threads if they don't interest you? I found AlexF's post more interesting than yours!
Should I just ask the mods to delete your threads if they are of no use or interest to me then? Visit other forums and you'll find these type of discussions on daily basis? Does this have that, will we have this upgrade, etc? There's no "police" shutting their mouths up.
Everybody on this forum is ASKING for the ROM.
None is OFFERING the Rom.
So, if you don't have anything to OFFER than please stop ASKING.
This will be showing you have at least a bit of respect for the people that are working trying to do something to satisfy YOUR laziness not to provide this ROM to the community.
Hope is dying but then, hope of course, is nothing to do with whether Raptor has the ROM or not. But all the same, after arranging a pickup and such like, it appears Buzz has not been getting any further contact from Raptor (see Buzz' website: buzzdev). So either the project is dead in the water (i.e. it never really existed), or Raptor has been unable to get in touch due to whatever reason. It could be one or the other.

SOMEONE OFFERED THE ROM AND PEOPLE ARE JUST ASKING IF THIS OFFER CAN STILL BE HONOURED.
TALKING ABOUT LAZINESS, IF I WAS LAZY I WOULDN'T BE POSTING LENGHTY POSTS TRYING TO HELP PEOPLE WITH VARIOUS PROBLEMS THAT I THINK I COULD HELP THEM WITH.
AND WHENEVER I DO SOMETHING FOR MYSELF (EG ANIMATED CONTACT PICS, THEMES, ETC.) I'M THE FIRST ONE TO COME AND POST THEM HERE. SO IF YOU WERE REFERRING TO ME WHEN YOU USED THE WORD LAZY, KINDLY APOLOGISE.
AND TO THE PEOPLE WHO JUST VISIT THE FORUM TO SEE IF THEY CAN GET SOMETHING BUT NEVER GIVE ANYTHING ... GO FIND YOURSELVES A WINDOWS MOBILE DOWNGRADE AND LEAVE US ALONE!!!!
(Aplogies to everyone else who had to read my crap but comments like this infuriate me!)
I'm a bit more calm now ...
@unlockme, aren't you the same guy who called Gora (the guy who gave Himlaya users the WM5 ROM) a lamer?

If you lookup the first screenshot, it reports 24.38MB of memory, hence obviously a smartphone.
Then, this guy shows picture of an himalaya device (by the way the picture on the wooden desktop is taken from a web site that has a review on XDA II). On these picture, it reports 128MB (normal size for a XDA II).
on my XDA II when I go the Settings / System / About it reports 125.86MB.
Don't loose your time giving credit to this lamer.

Hello all!
I’ve been reading all posts regarding this “famous” WM5 Magician ROM and has so, I’ve decided to post a small (made up) story about this situation. I hope you like it
The High Skilled liar
-----------------------
Letter from a unemployed guy:
Dear Sirs,
I’ve noticed that you’re looking for someone high skilled with a PhD, for a position has a Technical Director / CTO on your company. Has so, i’ve taken the liberty of sending you my resumé which i think, fulfils your requirements.
Best regards,
B.
Response letter from company YXZ
Dear Sir,
Thank you for your excellent resumé. We are very interested on meeting you and as so, we would like to have a small meeting on next Wednesday. Please don’t forget to bring along your PhD sealed certification.
Best regards,
A.
Response Letter from a unemployed guy:
Dear Sir,
Unfortunately I’ve lost my PhD sealed certification. But i’m free to meet up with you on Wednesday.
Best regards,
B.
Response letter from company YXZ
Dear Sir,
I’m afraid that we really need to see your original sealed PhD certification, since this position is of great importance. Since your resumé has exactly what we are looking for, we are willing to wait a few days for you, while you get your new copy of the original PhD diploma from your university ABC.
Best regards,
A.
Response Letter from a unemployed guy:
Dear Sirs,
Unfortunately, my wife got sick and requires 24hs attention during this month. She has injured her spine and I can’t leave her alone for too long. And has so, i don’t have time for getting a new certificate due to that. So if you’re willing to accept my candidacy without the PhD, I might have a few minutes to meet you up.
Best regards,
B.
Response letter from company YXZ
Dear Sir,
I understand your situation but our company has a strict policy about contracting persons that are proven to be certified. Since your resumé caused a great impression on us, we decided to contact the University ABC that you have pointed, so to figure out a way of solving this situation. Unfortunately we couldn’t get any response about your diploma (no one knew you). We also have obtained the information that you can request it by phone, and that it will be mailed to your home. We will continue to wait for you a few days more.
P.S.: We hope that your wife is feeling better.
Best regards,
A.
Response Letter from a unemployed guy:
Dear Sirs,
Thank you for your caring. I have had another situation…I’ve contacted my university but they can’t find my certificate anywhere. I’m sorry but I can’t send it to you. Besides, my car has broken and it’s hard to go meet you since there’s no easy transportation to your company. Has so, I’m must decline this proposal. Thank you for your time.
Regards,
B.
Response letter from company YXZ
Dear Sir,
Has our last offer, we are willing to meet with you at your university, if you can spare a few minutes ( btw, we hope that your wife is feeling better now) where we will sort out this situation. We just need a proof that you have a PhD, and we will accept you for the CTO position. Please, just name the day and time and we will meet there.
Regards,
A
..Needless to say, that company YXZ never got a response.
Cheers

This is exactly the point why some of us are ****i'n mad.
If I was the one that came here and post "hey, I have wm5" I was commiting myself to give you some news. If I don't want to give news in the first place, I would talk directly to Buzz, as he was the guy that had the skills and the respect from the community. I think this is common sense: if you dont want to reply to questions, why the heck are you opening a topic to lauch doubt and uncertain?! Don't post it. Do something with your software that is productive, instead of talking to us, comunity.
If you really have the rom, the comunity would be better served if you STFU and send the rom to buzz in the first place (without even posting about it).
I'm now waiting here for the next raptor show up, when he will bash us because of our ingratitude, and how painfull this quest is getting to him.
If ur imagination is true, so, u will never see Raptor again, and most probably, he is surfing our forum now under a new name and reads ur posts with great fun and laughing. Now, we need Colombo (the detective) to follow the new members that joined the forum since the disappearence of raptorz and investigates all their posts, way of wriring and IPs and comparing it with that of raptors to discover his new name and give him a great kik outside the forum.
Anyway, thank u raports, u gave us some fun and brain storming and opend our imaginations.
N.B. Another senario that if were right i will feel too shame, is that raptor is now resting in a bed in a hospital somewhere in london under a salping to support his spine and cannot move by any way to write to us.

Funny, I've visited and am a member of many other forums and in each of them, the members seem to be smart enough to wait patiently for an answer. Have a read through the thread, if there's no news, move on. I am also a moderator of one of the forums, and I haven't had to delete a single post about this subject as there aren't as many clowns who keep asking.
AND... one of your so called "police" happens to be Buzz, who locked the first WM5 thread as he got sick of the flaming! Fine job that did as all the clowns just created new threads. Doesn't that tell you something?
Yeah.
We are the ones to blame, the bad guys.
The person who came here and say "hey, I have wm5 on my magician" but never give us back answers or the actual rom and was always giving us different excuses (hey, people that have kids have time for them, and people with serious injury would not take the effort to came to the internet to not give us nothing) and responding on another forums (this one blows the "maybe raptor is in hopsital and don't have internet there stuff) and refused to upload via ftp because he already has a meet with raptor messenger (he didn't give the address, so what meet was it?!) is the person that deserve respect, care, and the title of the good guy.
You already knew what was this topic about. It's title is a forbidden question. If you people were smart, you should notice it is not a pleasent topic to you guys. Why the heck you keep reading a thing you don't want too? Move along, read the other topics. Let the bashers bash. It is only ONE topic. People are not taking a lot of space on xda-dev database.
Remember: you cannot control other people from posting, but you can control you so yourself can abstain from reading this post.
Why don't you do a "how's raptor health" topic? I think that would interest most of the users on the forum, so... this topic would die because of no replies.
People are constantly bashing things: broken firmwares, no support, HTC! Why can't we bash, or doubt, or whatever we want, if we discuss with correctness and without violence?
Funny thing is: people still think we don't see a wm5 rom because of the raptors injury. Maybe he is dead... He couldn't even upload a 25mb file, but he still keeped saying he was taking a huge effort to get us the file. Why didn't he upload just the first bytes of the rom?! With ftp, if he tried, at least buzz would get that info (well, if their crappy bt connection could send 416bytes on one connection... but maybe it would hang). Think this: will you still use gsm when this magic rom travel from raptor pocket to buzz? Guess not.
PS: remember that the censored guy told raptor the rom was an update to jam users, from club-imate? were on club-imate do you see the rom?
-> I keep waiting for raptor to came here and bash us ranters. he will say: "i'm sorry for being injured and for have a 3mth old kid, and you are all ungratefull". been there, saw that.
well, i think we are watching a DRAMA Movie which its title is:
"Pathetic Raptor's life and WM2005"
if i can get this WM2005 ROM i will not post any **** until i make sure that i can put my hands on it
to Raptor's People "Don't post any **** before you clean it" :x
Best regards for guys who are still waiting...

Simple fact, I love these flame wars. I really don't have an opinion either way on the whole Raptorz thing, but I'm having a really good chuckle while stirring people up! I suppose it's an Australian thing.. we all enjoy taking the piss!
And there's nothing wrong with a healthy debate... I'll let you get up on your high horse, and then I'll shoot it!
Keeper, amazing! LOL! Copied to my LJ. Thanks for a good joke.
NightmarE, you so right!
I think, there is a another way to upgrade - sell Magician and buy Atom or another new phone with WM5.0 and WiFi. It will be better.
For me personal, i'll be waiting for WM5.0 before Christmass, than just upgrade the phone

What happened to XDA?

I realize this isn't the most correct place to post this, but apparently, everyone should read this.
I've been involved with the xda modding community for over 4 years. When I came to xda-devs, the iphone didn't exist. Android didn't exist. WebOS didn't exist. If you wanted a "smart phone" your choices were PalmOS, Pocket PC, and a few Symbian based offerings. It's quite possible that the expense and, for lack of a better word, elitism that went with these smart phones meant that "commoners" weren't using them. Especially, they weren't modding them.
In those days, devs were respected. There certainly wasn't this big entitlement feeling that every tom, ****, and harry feel they are owed today. This site was started and grew based on people wanting to develop for these phones. We wanted them to do more. For the most part, if you didn't have anything to contribute, you understood to stfu. Even more important, if you saw a need, you worked to fill it. Many of the guys that started this community STARTED learning because of it. Sure, you'll have questions. Questions are good. The flaming of each other, the putting down of other sites, and the general dickery needs to stop.
It's sad that I look at xda with disdain these days. XDA has gone from a site that I spent most of my day on, and worked to assist where I could, to a necessary evil because I own an HTC device.
I'm thankful to all of the Android devs for their work in rooting so many phones. Thank you HTC for making a phone that works so well, I'm not completely sure I need or want to root it. Thank you XDA for providing a location where we can COLLABORATE.
To all of you kids (either by age or maturity) look up the definition of collaborate, patience, and "common decency"). Please stop being rude, and or demanding... anything. We don't need 30 extra posts to tell us "I'm Not Happy about X" or "User Y is a dork". It's useless. Put it on your myspace page, people may care there.
And to the elitists, don't knock people for thinking of an idea that someone else already tried. At least they are thinking. At least they are trying. And hopefully, they'll learn and take on the next challenge in your stead.
XC

It really does sadden me to see what has happend. No body is owed anthing. and for some reson everyone feels like they are.
You used to be able to asked a question without getting flamed to death, people and devs would help you with any problem you had, and now..... its just ridiculous the way people are acting. Its not just here, its on all the android forums that i have seen. so dont think that its just here.

What happened? Someone reported something that was untrue? Or a bunch of people got excited about a sketchy report of root/a mod. That has happened a bunch on XDA. Stick around and it'll happen a bunch more. People make mistakes, hello! We had several overclocking threads that were false starts in G1/Dream. Guess what? People kept trying and eventually, it got done. The people who were *****ing, however, just produced more *****ing--and my my phone does not install non-market *****ing

I'm not saying it's okay to act like a ****, I'm saying it's largely a lost cause. Simply because this is where XDA lost face in the eyes of many yesterday. Its not just the sites fault though. Members had a lot to do with it. I'm sure because yesterday was a holiday is the reason it took some time for the Mods to get a handle on things.

I think it is very important to understand where xda came from. This site began with people that not only helped us mod our phones, but were willing to teach us to mod our phones. That way, when the next phone came out, you had more people working to mod the phone.
I put this in a developer thread because development is a large driving force behind xda.
XC
People need to learn to just report a thread instead of fighting over what's posted in it. Mods will help sort things out I'm sure. We all need to just work together on making this site better and learn from the mistakes of others. The Incredible's development will get better in time its a fairly new device if you think about it. IMO its very nice stock. Keep up the great work Devs and for those who don't dev do your part in making this site a place for ppl to want to come to share and learn.

Although I have not really posted here much, I have been around since the Palm Treo 650 days (loved that damn phone btw) and have always had a deep sense of respect for all the developers here who dedicate their time and efforts to making a smartphone more powerful and more useful outside the stock features. Being a member of the iPhone community for so long, I have had no reason to come to these forums for quite a while so I've been out of the loop. Now that I own a droid incredible, I was led back here by a simple "how-to-root your android" Google search. Since that time, I have seen a lot of commotion about the Incredible.
I am not and never will be able to develop, write code, or become a linux genius. I have been a linux admin for years, but never had a need or want to go into development. That being said, I have always respected those who have the ability to develop software, apps, images, etc.
I think the main problem on these forums now, is too many kids and too many people who expect something to be handed to them rather than be grateful for what they are given. Then again, that's pretty much anywhere you go in the world. The only thing we can do as a community is choose how we respond to these situations. Like adults....
Thanks.

Sadly, I'm seeing these types of issues everywhere. The last 4-5 years has really created a new generation of people that think they can get away with saying whatever they want online. Think of it as the Myspace gen, if you will.
It's painful to say it, but honestly... it's not going to get any better.

Exactly right... And I'm one of those who kept my mouth shut as I read and learned here, respecting those who put forth the info that helped me...

It's sad that I look at xda with disdain these days. XDA has gone from a site that I spent most of my day on, and worked to assist where I could, to a necessary evil because I own an HTC device.

I can say the same about Hofo (on which I go by a different name..)
I started there, reading, absorbing, learning.. To pay it back, I started helping others when/where I could. I eventually started a collection of instructions, and writing up info I digested to make it easier for new people to just dive in and learn to do it themselves. I even met (in person) someone I met on hofo, and we worked to create a set of repeatable processes to flash moto phones with non-VZW firmware.
I saw it go from a great site to learn, to a place you're going to get flamed, called names, disrespected, etc... Thankfully, the birth of my son took me away from my cell phone hacking and Hofo just at the right time.
As I visit this, hofo and other sites, I can't help but think they are all becoming the same... a bunch of people who feel entitled to have this or that NOW and if they don't get it, they gripe up a storm about it, call people names, etc..
Its sad.
Is it really getting that bad? I haven't signed into this site since my old PPC6700 days, so I haven't taken a look at the Entitled Generation posts, but I'll be sure to keep an eye out.

Thanks.

AMEN ! NOOBs need to read and research more rather than demanding everything be handed to them.
I think this thread is a bit dramatic. "What happened to XDA?" Well, nothing really. There's just a huge influx of new people who know just enough to be dangerous and really want root (and look at the average post count, mine is low enough but every other person I see discussing this has less than 20 posts). The Incredible is one of if not THE hot phone on the market, so I'm not surprised it's like a circus in here. Due to recent events that I will not dare mention, It's like the scene in Caddyshack when they let all the caddys swim in the pool and run all the "members" off. And over the weekend someone took a dump in the pool and caused mayhem/panic...
If the mods would get more strict - short temp bans for people who are very rude, and maybe also for people who can't stay on subject or at least delete the off subject posts, and get rid of all the "why is my battery life bad" threads then the Dev section may improve. Perhaps make a rule that says you can't post in this section unless you have a certain number of posts? I don't know. It was just a bad weekend. It will get back to normal.

Feeling impatient

I've had my phone 2 weeks and run out of things to do to it. Where's the roms? froyo where are you ?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Well I can't wait for froyo + full file system lag fix
If you're not satisfied with the current rate of development, feel free to put together your own rom or even contribute to current development. The phone is what, two, three months old? Some phones didn't even have root methods for that long. If you wanted an att device that had a background of strong community hacking, should have gone with an htc device. The method of building roms on this phone is massively different and requires time to get everything sorted. And I'm willing to believe a lot of devs are waiting fur for the 2.2 source

You're saying you're impatient for new roms, implying you are not satisfied with your current options. There are several people doing fantastic work on our phones and you're belittling their work. Even jokingly.

I think you are taking this entire thread the wrong way.
I think the OP is trying to say that he has done all he can, where is something new? More things to play with.
Nowhere did he belittle or offend anyone. Nor was anything implied.
I have had my phone for 7 weeks - I want to see even more new ROMs -but in no way am I saying anything about anyone. I can't wait for the first Cyanogenmod either - I am impatient, just like I was when waiting for the Captivate launch day.

Looks to me like you are a good candidate to get in the kitchen and start cooking. That way you don't have to wait around for the roms and we can all play.
I don't think it's a matter of lightening up, I agree the op surely said "where are the roms?" That could have ben interpreted more than one way, which it was. Coming from the op of the forum nazi thread, sounds like you have plenty of time to start cooking and stop whining

Hey gunny, I know how you feel. I too am a bit bored. The rom development is great so far but that's starting to reach it's limit with what devs can do while we wait for froyo. I would love something new to play with. Maybe flash or some awesome game to come along that really pushes this device. Gps fix from sammysung would be nice. I could drive around using that to kill some boredom.
Anyway, props to the devs. Thank god we have some good ones. I would have been bored weeks ago without and with a laggy phone on top of that.
I understand both sides but unfortunately unless you know how to dev we all must be patient. These guys have done very good work and so far it is right on par with the Vibrant, and we all know T-mobile has many more dev's to work on ROMS. With more time will come better products, and all Galaxy S phones will be waiting for a while for 2.2. If Cyanogen comes out soon it shouldn't be hard for Eugene or someone to make a port of it, even if Eugene does not own a Captivate.
There's no need to fight guys, in all seriousness we have the best touch-screen phone on the whole market!
Gorgeous screen, specs, and soon to be a great international community of devs with the whole family of galaxy s line sharing ideas and accelerating the growth of development at a great pace.
Not to mention the soon to be implemented froyo that will not only introduce optimizations and flash, but also allow for a greater use of the phone's potential- spec wise.
Take into consideration the further development after froyo + full lag fix + a COMMUNITY effort of collaboration and I see a really bright future ahead of us.
Personally I LOVE my phone, it does everything I want it to do (I multi-task like a beast!!) BEAUTIFUL camera software.. I painlessly take panoramic shots! What more can you ask for?
Yes some high quality games compared to that of the iphone would be great, but the anti-piracy measures are not on par with the iphone at the moment, so we'll have to wait a little for the big-name app/game developers to step in.

I don't know what you mean by "all of my posts recently have had attitude." I generally answer any questions asked and follow it up with any advice I can offer. threads like this where, even unintentionally, the OP is kind of being dismissive toward the excellent work Unhelpful, DG, eugene (and a slew of others who I have forgotten to name).
it'd be fine if he was just opening a thread to say "I'm excited for something new! can't wait for froyo! woo!" it's that the attitude of this is "I'm bored with all the work everyone else has done." especially when it's someone who doesn't contribute to development (not counting donations, I have no idea if he has donated) himself. I just want people to be grateful for what they have right now... there's no need a open a thread saying "I want more but I want others to do the work"
Dude. Quit reading into stuff that isn't there. As for donated monies, I have indeed done so in the past. Lots. I HAVE NOT (REPEATING AGAIN) disparaged anyone or their work in my thread or any post I have ever made hear on XDA (feel free to search) If I am complaining about anything it's samsung, And YOU at the moment.
I'll say again then I'm done in this thread. Lighten up Francis.

Better now?
And Kaik, I am NOT directing this at you personally, just used your quote. This is meant as a general comment not directed at any specific person....
Ok, I clicked on this thread because I could have written it myself, as it was intended. Which was obviously "Ok, I tried all the mods and now I want to try a new one or an update of 1 I already have."
For instance, as you can see from my signature, I run sre123. Last night, Designgears posted that 123a would be posted that night. I thought nothing of saying "ooo, can't wait, please hurry!!!" because DG knows how I meant it (I hope).
I have only seen a couple of REAL jerk posts, and those were like "hey thanks, your mod/rom broke my phone" idiots. Read the OP's and mod and your own risk, fools!
I have NEVER programmed. I understand what gets done here, having been a pc tech, but I can ONLY help by installing and testing and reporting results. This device and this forum has inspired me to try to learn what the guys like Cyanogen, Designgears, Eugene etc do. But until I learn, I will eagerly await new stuff to play with, much like the OP of this thread.
Sorry to type so long a note, but the ONLY thing that can ruin this forum is nazi's. I live in S Florida, got enough condo and homeowner association nazi's to deal with !!! =)

I wonder why that is. Dosn't seem intuitive that would be the case. TM is a much smaller carrier, with much less coverage. I can't imagine (of course maybe I'm short on imagination) that there are more people on the TM version than the Captivate.
I too am impatient. But the impatience is for the GPS Fix.
Gunny...I'm with you. Seems many people just try to take everything the wrong way. Of course, the fact is, writing things and having them read, the reader doesn't know what your mood is, and it is a fact that if it can be taken wrong, it will be by some.
If I had the time to invest, I'd get into the ROMs. In fact I started to get into DEV. Downloaded the tools, did a couple weeks playing. But my programming has never expanded to Java, and the learning curve is too large, so I guess I won't. I'd enjoy it, but being at the computer all the time is not how I want to spend my time. I already spend a lot of time on it.
Regarding the DEVs, I appreciate them, and enjoy their work, and contribute occasionally to those I tend to utilize and keep using. But that doesn't diminish my right to be impatient. All customers are, no?
I want the GPS fix. All Galaxy S phones come with a nonfunctioning GPS. Froyo will be great to have also but they need hurry up with the GPS. The Droid X and all Motorola Android phones have an awesome GPS out of the box. I'm hoping Samsung gets it together otherwise they're not worth buying if it lacks a feature that most phones nowadays have. This problem from Samsung shows they rush things out to fast and then once they're out they fail to repair phones currently released.
I'll be eating my words if an update gets released within a week though.

From what I have read about Dev's and Tmobile is mainly because Tmob was the first to have Android. Lots of them are familiar from being already on Tmob. But that is just what I have read, does not necessarily make it correct. The dev's for the Captivate are doing a phenomenal job getting us great products.
Highlighted portion: Joking aside since I know you are, if people are impatient they really should start learning how to do this stuff. The intent of the thread missed the mark based on how it was written. We all want more ROM's or theme's or launchers etc...and they are coming but nobody has any say to be impatient when the majority of these dev's do these on a donation basis. How bad would it suck when people continue to feel impatient and the dev's decide to not dev anymore?

I'm not sure there are a lot of expectations here to be let down. We know that in most cases you probably wouldn't be able to offer us beta, or even alpha firmware and software to develop with or on. RC firmware and software would be just as much out of the question so we're down to what is already out, or something that is leaked by people friendly to the development communities that take the chance of getting in to a lot of trouble. So I don't really know what you have to offer yet. I am curious to find out, though.
Dear john, you have sparked a lot of interest, we are drooling at the mouth do you have any gingerbread for us, or dare I speak of honeycomb? ;-)

"IF" this where to happen it would be a good thing for both samsung and xda for the simple fact that it would help us make better mods for the samsung community and would allow samsung to release things that are more open to modding and customizations that all of us around here love and enjoy making (or in my case learning to make)...hope all goes well with this.
I am a dubious person and do not have expectations as I am still uncertain as to your intentions and more importantly you identity.
But if all is as you say I would take back to the powers that be, many are obviously unhappy with having to run outdated software in the form of the OS on what was at the time of purchase cutting edge hardware.
Give us a option. Give us a way to open the phone up and flash a AOSP option. A more Nexus-ish approach would be fantastic.
The Mainstream will have what they require in a stock configuration and we the ones that know what the potential of the device is can help you in pushing it to its limits.
Well I'm trying to get my post count up so I can comment in development. Anywho kudos to samsung.

maybe samsung will use us for testing and maybe some tweaking...that would give us a chance to develop on it before its officially released and we would just plain out have it early, cause if you give the devs here like 2 weeks with just about anything it will be fully modded and running to its full potential!!!

Hopefully their next approach works out better, they should have known better than to open a topic up to the entire forum
They should probably have moderator's from each device take questions from their users, then they could collaborate and get only the good questions answered. (and you wouldn't have to deal with trolls/flames/etc.)

I suppose the question *since we can't ask specifics* is....
What can you do to help us and or what tools can you provide to the DEVs to help us get every bit of Awesome out of the device that we can.
Put the ball in your court.
Glad THIS thread is still open...
(Does SamsungJohn know how forums work?!?)
ANYhoo... I'm a give 'em enough rope to hang themselves kinda guy and I've actually been recommending the Mesmerize & Fascinate to friends that need new phones based solely on the great XDA community and what they can get those phones to do using only a bread tie, three pennies, and a jar of Cheez Wiz. Kudos to the devs once again!
I had no delusions that Samsung was a great manufacturer... my TV and DVD/home theater unit have had their share of problems... and I was also aware of the OS update delays in other product lines before I got my phone so that wasn't a big surprise either. BUT, I got in on the free phone thing through USCC and (if I EVER get my $80 rebate) I'll still consider being a Mesmerize owner/user a WIN.
What I see here is a classic example of a company that has the OBVIOUS solution within their grasp and they are actively choosing to find an alternative to it that will provide them SHORT TERM monetary gains. They have set themselves up for failure and they have only themselves to blame. Here's a vocabulary lesson for SamsungJohn et al... crowdsourcing
Guys if you haven't read through it, that topic was closed by a moderator because it was an experiment that failed miserably. (because the general XDA population isn't very good at reading and following instruction, and it turned into a huge flamefest.)
John has been confirmed by several sources to be who he says he is (at least works for samsung) and is here working with the XDA administration to (in an organized way) swap feedback with the developing community (on all samsung products).
On a side note Supercurio has been in correspondence with Korean Samsung and has been also pushing for this very thing to happen, but from what I've read i'ts pure coincidence that John arrived when he did.
Anyway, sounds to me like we need to be patient as information IS coming as soon as they figure out the best way to go about this whole thing. This is how I've taken things from what I've read today, don't quote me....

In all fairness Crowdsourceing is what the whole AOSP is about. Android was and is developed to be Open Source. So if a company is reaching out to the community it can't be all bad.
I just think that for the most part a lot of us here are end users.
While I am sure that others like me want to, and strive to learn more, we simply will not be on a par with the current crop of DEVs as they progress as well.
I think the idea of a couple DEVs from each of the respective forums of the variations of the SGS platforms being in contact is a smart idea.
Dcows, Phidelt, and of course JT and many of the OPs in the Samsung Fascinate IRC channel would be obvious choices.
In fact a meeting of the minds in a channel of choice with only participants having voice would be nice as well.
I do understand and hope that SamsungJohn does know as well that most here are simply end users and just wanna know when we will get xxx or yyy ..
I will now go back to my corner get my Java Text out and see if I can learn, learn, learn....
If samsung really wants to get in good with the developement community, they would be wise to make it entirely official, and go to engadget or someone with a press release. If you want to gain our trust, give everyone the AOSP build.
Do I want sammy to be community-minded? Absolutely.
Am I going to trust one guy who says he works for our manufacturer? Well, let's get to the root of that. Do I trust the company who created out hardware? Not at all.

Yeah I frequent the irc with those guys and we're always willing to help people... I think a lot of people come to forums just to get help and information rather than to develop and theme and stuff like we do. It would probably be more beneficial for Samsungjohn to maybe set up a date on the irc and say like "I will be on from x time to y time" and then people can get on and ask questions and talk about things, and more of the power users who use the irc regularly will get a chance to maybe learn some stuff or help out Samsung.
It would also make it much easier to control, if things get out of hand then the OPs can simply kick or ban the culprits.

donations ?????????

why are some developers on xda so content on gettting donations :S yes if ur a recognized dev and you have given soooooooo much already yes i would donate. but alll these people saying donate donate donate when they havnt even got a rom yet are bassicly begging in a sense.
then there's the people that promise the best rom in the world but ask u to donate so they can the rom going i think thats wrong.
ONLY ASK FOR DONATIONS IF U HAVE A ONGOING PROJEXT ( WITH A ROM ) DONT LIMIT YOUR WORK TO JUST A FEW BETA TESTERS MAKE IT OPEN SO LOADS OF PEOPLE CAN TEST AN GIVE U FEEDBACK. IN MY MIND THESE PEOPLE USE THE DONATION SCHEME AS A LOOP HOLE TO SCAM PEOPLE OUT OF CASH
whats your views on this let me know. i will soon be moving my sony ericcson port to the madaco forum as only so many good people on xda the rest just want to ripp people off . makes me angry as xda used to be the best forum in the world. but now people use it as to scam money and thats a CRIME
in my opinion, i think ONLY recognized developers should have the donation tool as other people are abusing it and scamming cash out of good honist people
To be fair, nobody is scamming anyone. They're not forcing you to donate and if people choose to do so then i don't see anything wrong with it. I've never seen any instances where people are asking for donations when they haven't even contributed. But like i said, donations aren't forced upon you.
It's not even like you can accidentally hit donate!
Also, what about other devs such as Lowveld who aren't recognised developers?
Agree with Dan.
Plus, with all the hard work and efforts that our Devs put in, There's no harm in asking for a donation (IMHO) ! Remember, all Devs have a life outside of XDA...
And a donation need not be for monetary objectives only (of course, there's money involved).. But, I feel it is a sense of appreciation for all their hard work and a token of respect!
I know U are also a Dev... Keep up the good work!
Peace

Im not a recognized dev I NEVER ask for donations as its a privalige to be on here helping people out. Im saying it like this. If it NOT a recognized dev. Then u shouldnt ask for donations
Untill u are a recognized dev. I see being on these type of forums as a pleasure not a job. I am not new to CDs as many of u might think. I've been a active member since 2 years. I left the.forum and didn't think I would end up back but here I am.I deleted my old account but I wish I never. Some1 has made some apps and promised all a Rom but says if he don't get any donations he won't do the Rom. To me it seems like he don't have any intentions to make a Rom he just wants the donations makes me very angry to see this
Paul, where are you from?English is not my native language, i don't write very well, i do a lot of typo's and probably i am not very coherent all the time, but
.....
Regarding your problem for donations from my point of view they are great for the developers.
I allready saw Baadnwz a great developer(ex Desire, Sensation now on the One X) uses the money for buying new phones, or nk111 uses the money to pay his server and the list can go on.
Do you still think this is a scam?
Sorry for the developers that i didn't mention. And in my opinion lowveld should be a recognized developer.
Mod Edit:
Next time think twice about directing comments like that at fellow users please. This is not a place to say "you suck" or " your ___ sucks" or anything like that. This is XDA and a friendly community.
Glad I stumbled across this comment while roaming the forum here, as its not needed

Well, personally I think your point of view, although addressing some points I actually agree on (namely: work should never be dependent on donations), it's a bit over the top.
I don't scam people, and I am very clear on the purpose of asking for donations: buy a new device without having to sell the desire S on the process. Plus, even if you don't agree with the purpose for which I ask donations, I don't (and I think noone else) force you to donate anything.
And for this attitude, you don't need to be a Recognized Developer. You just need to be a decent human being. And fortunately we have lots of them on the DS forums.
Peace

Paul, I've not been a member on here for very long, although I spent quite a while just reading and hovering. I have also been a member on various other forums of all types for years. I have avoided commenting on this, or your other, rants before, but feel the need to now.
There is absolutely no need for the above comment and it is bordering on offensive. Your posts are very difficult to read - you mix lower-case and upper-case sentences all over the place, miss out punctuation so that multiple sentences become one huge string of words and your spelling is abysmal (I'm not entirely sure if some of it is you deliberately trying to be clever or ‘down with the kids’).
Draghiciandrei started his post by asking where you were from and commenting that his English is not the best. If English is not your first language then you have an excuse for some of it, but you should therefore give him the same leeway that he gave you. If English IS your first language however then you should be putting the effort in to make your posts easier to understand for the multitude of people here who do not speak English well.
I'm not trying to start a war of words here or anything, just putting my two-pence worth into this thread.

get a grip mate if i meant it in any offensive way i would have been more aggressive. :S i put a face next to it u got to be kidding me mate :S seriously u have got to be joking :/ obviously you dont know what the meaning of the word offensive is. it would have been offensive if i had said it like this *** put your ****ing glasses on *** however i did NOT say it like that. i said it like this *** put your glasses on *** in a joking way. im a computor programmer not a bully :/ if u have anything else to say feel free to PM me and we will sort this out as men should ( with kind words )
Actually 'mate' I do know the meaning of the word "offensive". Perhaps you don't and should look here The Free Dictionary
That comment is offensive because it has the capability to offend some people - you trying to claim it is not is eactly the same principle as people who claim they aren't racist despite using racist words because they "don't mean it". As for your comment about
it would have been offensive if i had said it like this *** put your ****ing glasses on ***

that would have just been downright rude and ignorant.
And, please try to read your own post. Yet again it is very difficult to follow - no capital letters, bad spelling, no punctuation, and constantly using "", ":S" etc instead of the smilies which are a lot clearer and easier to pick out in the writing.
I'm not going to do this on PM as there is no need. I am not the only person who you seem to want to pick a fight with and I respect several of those people that you have argued with enough to understand that I am not the one with the problem.
After speaking to Paul I would ask, respectfully, that nobody else jump onto my comments towards him. I will leave them here as they have been said, but there is no need for this to go any further at all.
I know that sometimes it's best to say nothing, but it's so difficult not to respond to somethings
Although I feel the childish yet perfect response would be WHATEVER!
Step away from your mobile....
Swyped form ym Dersie S unsig XAD Permuim
According to conantroutman, senior mod, I am the same "level" as a recognized developer.
According to XDA Rule # 8, users are allowed to ask to donations in their signatures, "However donations up front are not allowed, this forum is about sharing, not about getting paid to do something, that's what your job is for."
Perhaps a better way to have handled this would have been to have clicked on the posters name, and then to have chosen "Add xxxx to Your Ignore List".
Okay I'm here no fear guys.
Now in response to all that has happened here I first want to say thank you to the two individuals that took the spat to PM and stopped it in the public forum. Again PM is where you should take ANY and EVERY disagreement you might have with someone.
Do NOT let me see you starting a pissing contest in the public forum directly attacking users using foul curse words! This is not the place for that and never will be on my watch!
Now as for the topic/thread....I'm okay with it long as you guys continue to keep it civil in here going forward. This topic while can get out of hand easily, is one that is okay to discuss imho.
My personal opinion on the subject though.....
It is more than okay for people to have donation links in their sig's that are not dev's. You dont have to be a Dev to warrant a donation. Many of the themer's and other people that contribute to the community are NOT developers but they provide value to the overall community and if someone wants to donate to them so be it...They might not get much use out of the button, but it is their right to have one if they want...
Now asking or demanding for donations up front will not be tolerated here in any way. There can be a fine line on this with RD's and others using the donation system for their beta's and such before a wide release but thats NOT what I'm talking about here at all. I'm talking about the flat out demanding of a donation before providing a service or doing anything else...If you see that then report the post and I or someone else will handle it.
Any further ?'s see the rules in my signature or PM me.
Again, keep this civil or it will be closed...

exactly what i meant. I never meant for this to get so out of hand. I should have put more detail and more of a explanation about it. I have posted a thread, Aimed at the people i offended. I am sorry this got so out of control, I will be leaving XDA untill i have my operation and i have Fully recoverd. (Which will be about 6months). When i do recover i will be starting to port roms and apps like i used to ( Thats right i have not just joined xda i used to be here before, I was on the good old sony x8 forum I used to port app's i even made flash player work for sony x8 arm 6 devices i even ported sense to x8, so i am a contributor to xda members, I closed my account back then but i recently joined back up. I would like to say a very nice thanks to Simon.TS.HTC For being so understanding and being just a hell of a nice guy.

+1 to that. Maybe the perfect embodiment of the "iron fist in a velvet glove"?
