Hi all,
this is my first post and I'm not sure if it's in the appropriate section but here goes...
I need a free download of a messenger that lets me contact my msn contacts.
Such as Pocket MSN.
I have a Vodafone V1415, Windows Mobile 6 Standard (non touch screen).
Thank you
Liam

As a new user, welcome to the forum!
Don't forget to read this!
Also, don't forget to use search! If you need something, Google it or use the builtin search function.
Here's your latest Windows Live Messenger.
Which version will work on my device please?
I've tried a few of those on that page but they won't work. :|
They either display a grey window when clicked upon or they show "Sign into Windows Live" but when I click that nothing happens.
Not sure how well it works on SmartPhones, but make sure it is installed in main memory, not SD.

I just picked up an HTC X7501 Advantage and I'm trying to find the best way to run Gmail on it. So far I've tried three methods:
1) running the web version on Pocket IE or Opera
2) the java app for gmail (http://www.google.com/mobile/mail/index.html)
3) Pocket Gmail (http://gmobile.phpmagazine.net/)
Of the three the java app crashes fairly often but seems to work the best when it runs. Pocket Gmail offers some options the others don't but doesn't look as good as the java app. the web version is probably the worst of the three.
I tried setting up Outlook to retrieve my gmail but it stopped after about 500 messages and only seemed to download the oldest ones. It also can't support threads (something I love).
How do other people run Gmail on Windows Mobile devices? Any ideas or suggestions?

To get around the POP / Outlook / which messages to retreive issue, there are little known commands to use in GMAIL. In your outlook setup for your Gmail account, prepend your usename with "recent:". So your username should look like
recent:[email protected]
See what happens when you retrieve messages now, this might be what you are looking for.
Wow, sounds like some usefull info. I'll try that later, thanks.
Thank you TC1. I'll give that a try as well!
Any chance of getting the other little known commands listed here.

T-Mobile Solution
Hi,
This may only work if you have T-Mobile in the US but I take advantage of T-Mobile's mail server for my gmail. I set up the account on t-mobile's website and access it on my phone using t-mobile's pop3 servers. Works great but every month or so I have to go on my t-mobile site and delete the old mail off or it stops collecting any new mail. Hope that helps somebody.

I just use the Java App, never had a problem with it crashing. Though, may depend on the midlet manager you use.

midlet manager? Huh?
The midlet manager is essentialy the PocketPC Java VM that you use to run java apps which in the case of mobile devices are called "midlets"

How do you get different ones? How do you tell which you have?
Thank you for the information.
So does no one have an answer to this? (See previous post directly above)...
if you search the forum for
"midlet AND manager"
you're sure to get link for a few
buzzdev.net also have 1 or 2
If you go into the "Java" application on your Programs folder, and press the Menu key or whatnot, there's usually an "About" option where you can see the build and name and whatnot...
Hope that helps

Man, I should have seen that. Thanks for pointing it out. Here's what it said.
"inten Java MIDlet Manager

I'll check into some of the others. Does anyone have any experience with the one I mentioned above? Good/bad/otherwise?
Thanks!

this worked beautifully! been struggling with this problem for awhile! the funny thing is, when i first did the setup wizard, i remember outlook had automatically put the 'recent:' prefix in front of my username. but thinking it would be a problem, i deleted the prefix! totally forgot about that until this was mentioned..
Thanks!

That had me proper baffled - but I did it and it worked perfectly. Thanks!
It's my first day with this new toy and I can't believe how difficult I find to cope with this TouchFLO thing. Maybe it's because I have been using Windows Mobile since the days of HandheldPCs on WindowsCE but I find that this interface is just too inflexible for me. The fact that you can see only the next appointment is an absolute deal breaker for me: I just can't go through my work day without having a clear view of all my appointments!
Anyway my question is actually on a different subject: my previous device had WM5 and setting up a Hotmail account was extremely easy, now when I try to set up a Hotmail account in Outlook Mobile, Opera opens and I reach a page to download Windows Live from the Microsoft site. I don't understand.... Windows Live is preinstalled and the Messenger is already running.... Should I download something else or is Opera interfering with the set-up process?
By the way... how can I set IE Mobile as my default browser?
HELP!
You have to configure it via the Windows Live application.

It's not hard.
Start -> Programs -> Windows Live
You enter your hotmail username and password etc, set a bunch of options to your liking and then your hotmail account will be sync'd on your device.

If you don't like the TouchFlo 3D today plugin, you can uncheck it and replace it with whatever you want. Go to Settings->Today->Items and untick TouchFLO 3D.

Yes I know.. thanks.... To be honest I have spent the weekend playing with the phone and I am getting used to the TouchFLO 3D now, even if I still have a few problems with it....
- screen not always sensitive to finger touch, particularly in Opera I find it that very often my double-tap is ignored, and also difficult to use finger on corners of the screen....
- the TouchFLO user guide mentions that you can shrink the clock to make more room for appointments... well I know how to make the clock smaller but it still shows only the next appointment...
Is there a program like PIM Backup for Windows Mobile? Since it is CFW book now I will flash with my security HD7 often. And I do not want my contacts have to retype again. Is there much lighter a universal program, where do I enter my us and then I can spend them in different formats? With Windows Mobile, it was soooo easy with PIM BACKUP. Mobile phone flashing, PIM BACKUP was mostly already in ROM and simply integrated the. Pim file upload DONE. Please help me.

but windows live can't backup SMS
I would like to sync my contacts But not online but like to always have a backup of my contacts. Just a little hack that I run after the flash and my contacts are back.

a easy way is to have your contacts on google, and add google account to your wp. It will sync contacts, email and calendar..
but unfortunatly, there is no backup of sms as I know of.

Or Xbox live save games....
OMG if it could do save games for your WP7 games too, that would just be EPIC.
I can deal with setting up Exchange/Live/Facebook but, when it comes to redoing 20+ levels on Ilomilo, Enigmo or geoDefense, it's fun but, after 4-5 times of doing it, I just want the achevements now and it's getting to be a pain now.
Come on, there has to be a few heavy gamers here who would like this....

Hi guys, just had a quick question. I've done my searching on both Google and XDA and I'm posting this thread as a last resort.
I'm on build 7720 and I can't seem to figure out how to set up the integrated messenger. When I slide over to the "online" section in messaging it says there is no one online when clearly I have a few people online. How do I get my contacts to show up in the "online" section?
P.S. It's been like this on all 3 builds of Mango for me.
Thanks for any input guys!

1) First question is, have you put yourself online in the status menu?
- Pull up the action bar, tap the status button, then tap 'online'. This will actually connect you and show you as online.
If you are online, then:
2) Do you have the right Windows Live ID sync'd?
- The integrated messenger app will only connect to the PRIMARY Windows Live ID. So you need to make sure that the Live ID you have set up with your phone initially (the one set as your main) is also the one you use for your Windows Live Messenger contacts.
If you have the right Windows Live ID, then:
3) Try adding a new contact and seeing if that contact appears on the phone.
- Add a new contact, preferably one not on your contact list currently, to see if the person shows up on your phone. Sometimes, it may simply be a sync'ing or provisioning error on Windows Live's end, and it may not be your phone. If this helps, you may have to remove your previous contacts and re-add them to allow Windows Live to provision them properly for your phone.
Then, if you are having issues with your Facebook contacts as well:
4) Contrary to popular belief, your Facebook contacts (or Twitter/LinkedIn contacts) not appearing is not a Windows Phone bug. Its simply a server side error with Windows Live and Facebook. Both of them need to sync up with your Windows Live ID, and sometimes that takes a while (from a couple hours to a couple days). In some cases, it doesn't happen at all, and a hard reset may be necessary to give Windows Live and Facebook a wake up call, but even this does not always work.
If all else fails:
5) Then unfortunately we can't be sure why its not working. Microsoft does not provide support for beta software so we probably won't see any real solutions until Mango is finally released and other people start reporting this issue. So you may be out of luck. Try a different Windows Live ID to see if that works, check to make sure your contacts haven't blocked you (or you blocked them). Or just wait it out and see if the Windows Live servers resolve it in time.
Hope it gets fixed for you. It has worked flawlessly for me ever since the first beta (though it did take a couple of hours for my contacts to show up initially), so its certainly not a Windows Phone issue.
Is those ppl tht is online, shows up in ur address book?

Thanks for going in depth with this! It worked after I signed out of messenger and signed back in. I'm guessing it had to reconnect for some reason.
Thanks again!
Only works on wifi
Hi,
I have a different problem... for some reason I can only connect to the messenger service when I am on a wifi network? It won't work over the cellular network even with a hsdpa connection? It just says "Can't connect to chat".
Anybody else have this problem?
I'm using a Dell Venue Pro Build 7720 on Vodafone UK.
are you using it on a work network? maybe they are blocking IM.
I use it on wifi...
sometimes i have problems from live (on the phone) to my office's Lync server.. but that might just have been in the beta.
Working
I figured it out last night and yes your right, it was the network blocking it. I turned off content control with Vodafone and now it works.
Hello my xda friends,
Last night I updated to Mango RTM version. Its all working very good.
I synced my Windows Live account with mail and people.
Also the chat is working good thru the Messaging hub.. But only facebo
ok is showing up..
So my question is: How can I add Windows Live accounts to the chat function?
Thanks alot
EDIT:
Some additional information: I have 2 Windows Live account. One for the marketplace (a fake one). This is also the one I add first in the phone.
This is because Zune then sees my fake account so im able to download apps.
After that I add my 'good' account. The problem is, the people from this account are not showing up in the Messaging hub??!!
Sounds excessively complicated to me. I'd just stick to one Live account (I use the one tied to my Xbox Live account, personally).

Yes I know but as far as I know its the only way to download / install apps from the Marketplace?
I tried a hard reset and entered my normal account first... then the Messaging page IS showing my people BUT as you can guess, I cannot download anything from the marketplace.
So right now its Marketplace VS Messenger....
You can't. The built-in Messenger only uses the primary Live ID. You cannot have it sign-on to multiple Live IDs at once, or use an alternate ID.
It seems to be that the marketplace is already available
At the 23 of august MS finally added the Netherlands to the list!
Finally I can drop my fake account
Thanks for all the answers
