Use phone as external drive / memory stick - General Topics

The computers at my work have allow connection via USB cables but no active sync. On my P3300 all that happens is the battery is charged.
Other peoples mobile phones have the facility to switch from Phone mode to "data mode". This then allows their phones memory card to be read like an external drive or memory stick. Files etc. can then be transferred.
I have seen mention of WM5Storage but believe there are issues with this program. Does WM5Storage work or do problems still exist?
Is there another way to do this on my P3300 or other HTC devices.

The recent problems were whith the newer devices like the Polaris... On the Artemis it should work fine...

I've had nothing but good luck with WM5torage. It's a savior if you've got a Mac.

External USB HDD

Hi, i have been reading about this, and i am getting conflicting information, and no real answer.
I have a 2.5" USB hard drive, and was wondering is there any way to plug this into the Magician, and then for the magician to see it as storage. I dont want to use it all the time, just when in the car, and plugged into the Car Stereo.
if its just a case of a lead convertion, then i think it would be simple, but if not.... hmmm.
So if anyone can help i'd be grateful
Thanks
Dahquim
This has been answered several times before, and should be possible to find by SEARCHING..
How ever, because I'm in a good mood, I shall answer..
Yes, it is THEORETICALLY possible.
To acheive this, you must gain USB host on your Magician.
This can be done in two ways: Backpack + CF card with host support or a SDIO card with host support.
This can be bought from several suppliers.
Then, it's the driver issue.
A USB disk should be usable on the WM200x OS, but I do not know the size limit.
It might be about 2GB or it could be lots more.
So in real life; NO you can't use a USB HDD with your Magician.
This MIGHT be possible with the new Universal, but we haven't got confirmation that it has USB host support yet.
---- Edit ----
You might be able to do it if you can get a device that has host support.
Kinda like those gadgets that connects digital cameras to HDDs..
It just occurred to me..
How ever, It might be hard to use the magician to controle the data flow..
You'll probably need two connections to the device.
One for telling the device what to send, and one to receive..
Maybe, but unlikely...
chack out this things:

..this is a pseudo-host controller for PDA but i don't know were can find such a thing...

The PXA27x processor inside the magician does support USB-on-the-go...
If you look at the USB connector in the magician, you will see that it is actually a MiniAB connector...
So, from the pure hardware point of view, the magician should actually be able to operate in host mode and, for example, control an external hard drive/pendrive, or even a keyboard...
The point is, that most likely, there's no usb-on-the-go driver provided with the operating system...
IMHO, I think it be a waste. These devices we have are not meant to host power hungry device like a 2.5' HDD. It be a waste to what our devices would be known as "mobile." I think better stick to SD technology but that is also another issue. As the cards get larger and larger, the more processing time and power is required to fetch data and back.
there could be a way ....
After reading this thread, I think there is a possible way of actually having certain types of storages connect to the xdaii. I've seen some bluetooth 40gb hardadrives that connect to the pc. They connect using two methods. The first method connects the harddrive as a wireless storage device and the other method connects the hard drive as a bluetooth network storage. Now as for the second method, it's actually supported in broadcom's and widcomm's pda drivers. So in theory, your device should detect the harddrive as a local computer on your bluetooth network. But now, the main question is, can the bluetooth data transfer speed be sufficient to allow mp3 playback without lagging and frame drops ?? Well that's one questions I'd sure like to know the answer for. Anyways, just liked to share this info with u, it could be useful to u or for others on this forum. Good luck.
can we use this thing for i-mate jam with sdio wi-fi card:

Usb Mass Storage, how to?

Hi all,
How to use my Cruise as a Usb Mass Storage device? Are there any free alternatives to WM5torage (which does not work in WM6.1)?
I tried Diamond's UsbToPc cab, but it does not work. There's also nueusb (no2chem_usbtopc_mass_storage), but I can't find a cab for it, just OEM (and I don't know how to install it).
I know CardExport works, but it's not free.
I use Mocha FTP (free)
http://www.mochasoft.dk/freeware/ftpd.htm
works wireless or via USB.
Take NueMassStorage. it's perfect.
http://www.nuerom.com/BlogEngine/page/Pocket-PC.aspx
NueMassStorage doesn't seems to work on my Polaris (stock ROM, WM6). Most of the time the device is, indeed, detected as mass storage, but without any actual storage volumes on it. Sometimes the PC actually detects a storage volume and mounts it, yet the mounted drive remains inaccessible/unreadable.
The only solution i found to work so far is Softick's card export, yet, it costs $14.95, this is comparable to a regular card reader price, while it's speed on Polaris is about 8 to 10 times slower than an average card reader, and is only a little bit faster than transferring files via activesync.
IMHO, just get one of those nifty cards that come with a small compact reader, and keep the reader on your keychain.

and what if he's homeless?
Hmmm
He wouldn't be able to charge his phone - unless of course he got a solar charger as part of his contract...Where would they send the bills?

connecting my omnia to my ps3

does anyone know why my ps3 wont see my omnia when its in use as a flash drive
its formatted to FAT32, and ive even got the clearly labelled folder everyones on about. but it still wont detect it any
any help ???
anybody Know??
ive now tried with the built in usb switcheroo and WM5torage
to my knowledge, WM5torage doesn't work on WM6.1. .at least not on my devices and roms
moreover, there's a difference between the drivers on the ps3 and your pc.
cheers nir
i did notice the device seemed to keep on connecting and disconnecting so my theory is that theres a file that identifies the omnias storage that doesnt display it on the ps3
maybe you can find drivers for USB Keys for your PS3..
the problem is that USBtoPC doesn't REALLY act as a flash drive.. it only simulates it.
your device is actually discovered as a PDA (just without all the fuss).. rather than a flash drive even when in USBtoPC mode..
a) WM5torage works on WM 6.1 - there is nothing specific in WM 6.1 to prevent it from working. If it does not work, it not because of "newer" WM, but because of usual issues with USB driver in particular ROM (as in WM5torage FAQ)
b) It seems that PS3 is very picky in regards of USB device comminication timings, so it works with hardware USB disks, but cuts communication with "emulated" USB drives short. I have Omnia myself and had no success with PS3 either.
apparently i'm not the only one who complained about WM5torage having problems with late roms..

Obviously, when new rom breaks usb driver compliance, all people with this ROM will have problems with WM5torage. Still it does not change the fact that this has nothing to do with Windows Mobile version.
Alright then.. might be just bad luck..

USB Speed at 10mbps?

I apologize in advance if this has been asked before, but I couldn't think of any good search terms for this.
Why is it that when I connect my VZW TP2 and use active sync to transfer files over from my PC, it only connects at 10 mbps. I have plenty of other USB 2.0 devices that work properly and I would hope that by now, smartphones have a 2.0 port. Anyone have an answer for this?
Are you trying to save to a storage card or to the device? I have a storage card and when you connect the TP2 to your pc while it has a storage card in it, I get an option to connect with activesync or connect as a disk drive. If I select a disk drive then the speed is much faster then with an activesync connection. I only use the activesync connection if i am going to sync my contacts and calendar. Unfortunately you do not get this option if you do not have a storage card in the TP2.
Yes I have seen that screen, just never thought those would be related. I will look into that, but it just seems weird. I had the same problem with my XV6800 and that didn't give me any option for just a disk mode. Any other thoughts as to why that is? Limitation of winmo 6.1?

No its not a limitation of winmo 6.1 it's a new option that was added later on during development. You would see it in newer builds and custom ROMs

Samba Server/ Drive Mapping

I've searched for this for 2 hours so, trigger-happy users, don't flame me.
I was looking for a samba server style app that would make the Hd2 appear as a drive on the computer.
I presume these type of network transfers would be faster than a standard ftp or usb (it
If you need further clarification then have a look at this app I was using on my old N95 called SymNAS:
http://symnas.com/Products/ProductInfo.aspx
Basically it will turn the phone into a NAS drive (Network Attached Storage)
If anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated.
I seriously doubt it would faster than usb ...
Unless you have a 400MB wireless network ...
but regardless of speed I have looked for this as well, there are apps that let you transfer files to the phone over wifi but have not seen one that lets it act as a network drive ... yet ....
The HTC network plugin lets you map a drive on your phone though ....
So would you recommend:
a. remove micro sd and use an adapter
b. use usb cable and choose mass storage drive
are they both the same thing?
Are there any other methods of high speed file transfer that i am unaware of ?
