Shame it's not for Pocket PC's though.

No. But I am guessing it might be good for devices like HTC Shift which can run XP/vista

It looks beautiful, wish we could run it on our devices. I've never wanted an OS on my phone as bad as I want this

Agreed.
Not being a developer myself, I'm not sure if it's possible to port this or tweak it to be compatible with our devices. Can someone shed some light on this subject for us?

This is definiteley something i want more bad than a private moment with Pamela Anderson

Well, ANYthing is preferable than a bad case of genital herpes...

It's probably not too hard to port, given that it's a Linux distro. I'd be willing to bet it could be trimmed down, have all the unnecessary (or too-large) stuff removed.
And for particular devices, you could search for the open-source Android repository for the device's chipset, which contains the low-level hardware routines and references..
Just copy/port over the low-level routines into the Ubuntu implementation, recompile, and voilà! The only limitations I can think of would be A) not enough memory available to do all the cool UI stuff, and B) some hardware routines missing/not yet implemented from the Android repository, or even just a general lack of hardware documentation..
I'm tempted to try messing with it myself, if I can figure out how to emulate the firmware image on my computer.

Well, Ubuntu MID is developed for ARM processors. I have iPaq 2490 which is based on this processor, and considering that CF 8GB cards are no luxury today... this actually might be possible to pull

Android is based on the Linux kernel, so yes Linux *can* run on our phones. It's a case of getting it to all work first, and THEN start adding the bells and whistles.
I've used Ubuntu on my desktops before now, so this caught my attention. I'll have a read into it later tonight.

Well I've got a intel atom based mobo which I'm eventually going to stuff into some car. I've already looked at it, and for such an early release it was pretty good. I couldn't get the clutter UI to work at all though which was kind of a bummer; I guess I'll give it another try in a few days.

Have someone try to port ubuntu mobile on any phone?

Great work man .......

OCR Software

Just want start a little thread to collect a list of good programs that use mobile phone camera for input and OCR(Optical character recognition) for output of a text document...
Especially searching for hand written text recognition tool!!!
Here is initial list:
ScanR
This is an app wich can make a black and white copy of uploaded documents. it´s also possible to send the results as fax.
Another nice feature is to scan vcards.
OCR now!
this is an online service to convert a picture into a document (pdf, doc, txt).
It also handels formated text with pictures! (this is not WinMo software)
There is also this SDK(Abbyy software is known as best OCR tool in the world): http://www.abbyy.com/sdk/?param=56223
But I haven't managed to find any software which uses it yet though
You can try :
http://www.topocr.com/mobile.html
It seems to be for VGA device, not WVGA

I didn't test these OCR programs, but I wonder how would these work with devices that have poor close-range focus?
Also most of what HTC produced the last few years were devices with autofocus, not really good at "seeing" close little letters.

SDK Target Platform
Windows Mobile 6.0
GCC CLI Embedded
Scheduled Release Date
January 2010-March 2010
The Beta R3 release is incomplete from a functionality standpoint, but can provide an evaluation of TopOCR SDK performance (accuracy and speed). The SDK supports camera images of up to 5 MP in size. Please note the following limitations:
* Only English supported
* No Deskew or Perspective Correction
The final release will replace the limitations with the following:
* Eleven languages supported
* Deskew and Perspective Correction using inline fixed point arithemetic
* Minor bug fixes and optimizations
Compare the speed, accuracy, and features of the TopOCR SDK, then compare the price and you'll see that it is the best and most cost effective solution for your OCR development needs.
People have complain on topocr. It somehow doesnt runproperly and there is problem with uninstalling it from WM
Too bad that nothing else jet emerged... Cause this combination could be jack pot for all business users.

Samsung Omnia Pro includes Smart Reader that feature ocr, vcard reading, and translation
@geoffdeath: Capturatalk looks great but it's a bit to heavy application, and it's designed for English only... It's not really designed for OCR recognition of photographed document, rather for dialectics.... sure you can partly use it but not what I'm looking for!

It is a dedeicated card reader, I tried the cab on my Treo Pro, but was getting errors.
@ninjaw: Is smart reader importable to HTC devices and X1? it looks like dedicated card OCR - not document OCR[/QUOTE]
It can read business cards and auto create Contact Card on phone, but it also can be switched to read any document and convert it to msWord, I had Samsung Omnia and used it a lot on university to copy texts from different papers without having to write them with computer, also store the taken photo.
Now I have HTC TD2 and I really miss this app, it is very usefull to copy anything you need from newspapers, magazines or anything. I can't believe there is no other app like it and that nobody found the way to make it work on other devices.
DioOCR
I have a Samsung Phone, but as I try to launch Smart Reader I get an error message saying it can't locate "DioOCR" or one of its components. Please can someone look for and upload this file for us to try? I'm sure once this file is placed in the device it willl work properly!
I was dreaming this kind of OCR someday will mature and available for Windows Mobile.
I am imagining to be able to scan and translate chinese text, japanese text ...
Btw, how is the situation in other platform?
Is there any decent OCR software on iPhone and Android?
Forget about BB
I have DioOCR on my Samsung( SmartReader) it works just fine reading text.
The only thing is it only has English available in it.
Using 5 megapixel though.

Been waiting for the XP Mod for awhile. Anyway, menus seems distorted under 193 dpi.
Apps start way too quick. like... instant => unreal. No bootmenu too. Would be nicer if windows are floating around.
How about an option for wallpaper? And some setting options, too.
Anyway, great start. Looking forward to updates!

Here are our boot animations: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1503289
If you keep XP Mod as your default launcher and our XP Boot Animation, it will complete the full sequence (You can always disable lock screen on boot).
No thanks, I prefer using XP Mod as a fun app for showing off purpose, hence no need bootaniation as default.
What I'd like to see is these animation being integrated into the apps, with tweaks and mods... to make it as perfect as Winmo version.
I believe this app has big potential, if you push it to the limit, I'm sure it'll be huge!
I just nerdgasmed in my nerdpants, this is a real bonermaker on the Int. S3! Love it!
It obviously needs a lot of work as it is still beta but with a few things such as pinch to zoom, being able to change settings, and to place apps on the home screen then I'd give up my own personalised theme for this!

Rumor: Android 4.2 to Introduce Enhanced Google Now, Project Roadrunner and More

WARNING: This post contains rumors and speculation from Android Insiders. If you do not want to know about Android 4.2 then do not read this story and unplug from the Internets. You have been warned – the goods are after the jump. Thanks to androidandme for digging this up!
There is so much to cover in this rumor report that we are going to use a slightly different format. We will list each rumored feature individually and then break it down before moving on to the next.
NEW NEXUS PROGRAM
Rumor: As previously reported, any manufacturer can produce a Nexus device or a Nexus version of an existing device. They work closely with Google on the hardware and driver details (there is a more efficient solution for this in 5.0), but Google is responsible for the updates (don’t know how the carriers factor in). The phones don’t necessarily have to have “Nexus” as part of their name, it works more like a certificate like “HD Ready”.
The devices have to fulfill some basic requirements. The phone has to ship with a stock version of Android, it needs to have the hardware power to run all “Nexus Games”, and they have to support Google Wallet, aka have NFC.
There are two carrots on a stick that probably make the Nexus brand a huge selling point. Google Play gets expanded with a media streaming service component and there will be games that only work on Nexus devices. The streaming service uses the secure memory, making it harder to pirate the content. No word of the type or source of the media, but it seems to be a big deal.
Speculation: This info is all over the map, but it lines up with previous reports. It sounds like Google is going to encourage manufacturers to join their Nexus program, but it will be optional. If manufacturers meet a list of requirements, then they can become Nexus certified and gain access to new services and features.
It almost sounds like the list of requirements that Google currently places on OEMs in order for them to gain access to Google services like the Play store. This will now create a second tier certification program that manufactures have the choice of participating in. OEMs can offer a device that meets the basic requirements and gain access to the Google Play store, and if they include additional elements they get access to the Nexus certification
NEW CUSTOMIZATION CENTER
Rumor: There is a new Customization Center, where you can change ringtones, language packs, background, launchers, and so on. There is nothing too sophisticated (for now). The center is mainly a convenient way to enable the average customer to do some basic customizations. The range of options can be expanded via Google Play of course. However, there are two new features: templates that change the appearance of all (newly introduced) dynamic icons at once, and post filters that change the appearance of the whole UI – think of Instagram.
The manufacturers may provide their custom UI through the Customization Center, but they don’t have to. When Google upgrades Android and a manufacturer fails to provide a compatible version of their custom UI the device reverts simply to the stock UI (or the user waits with the upgrade until the manufacturer catches up).
Speculation: This sounds like a dream come true. Google may have finally provided a solution to the manufactures that allows consumers to update the base Android operating system, without having to wait on the OEMs to update their skins.
NEW PROJECT ROADRUNNER
Rumor: There is major effort to improve the battery life called Project Roadrunner.
Speculation: Details are pretty light on this one, but it sounds like Project Roadrunner will enhance battery life the same way that Project Butter enhanced the overall responsiveness in Android 4.1.
UPDATED GOOGLE PLAY
Rumor: Google Play is enhanced with new features like personalized search, optional promotional campaigns with notification center integration, more billing options, and easier in-app micro-transactions.
Speculation: We don’t have much to add, but we like anything that will help developers generate more revenue.
UPDATED GOOGLE NOW
Rumor: Google Now provides help for basic OS functions, aka “Where can I activate bluetooth?” or “How can I tone down the brightness?”, to make it easy for newbies to settle in.
Speculation: No surprise here. Google said they would be updating Google Now and we expected to be able to control system level functions.
UPDATED VIDEO PLAYER
Rumor: The stock video player app gets a major revamp and provides new APIs for other video services to tie in.
Speculation: Again there is not much to add, but androidandme believe this is part of a bigger media streaming service that Google will soon offer.
DRIVE-BY CONCLUSIONS
Please keep in mind that all of this should only be considered a rumor, but this source has been on the money with previous information. Some of the details are so specific that I have a hard time believing they are just making this up as they go along. The source also shared quite a bit of information about Android 5.0 that we left out so we could focus on the next release.
Hello users with Android 4.2.
By now we are certain that Google has handed out new Nexus devices to their employees who are currently testing Android 4.2. Androidandme have monitored quite a few visits to their site over the last month, but the number of hits from Android 4.2 really started to pick up this week.
I’m not sure if I believe every detail that is included with this report, but all the signs are pointing to some major changes to the Nexus program and the core Android OS. Some of these changes are so big that we wonder if they will even be included with Android 4.2 or be held for Android 5.0.
We previously speculated that a lot of the things in Android 4.2 would be geared towards laying the groundwork for Android 5.0. It is possible that a lot of these new features will only be visible on Nexus devices, while standard devices would be left without them.
The whole concept of a Nexus certification program sounds like Google is putting their foot down and taking more control of the Android experience. Even though the program might optional, hopefully the consumers will realize the benefits of a “Nexus ready” device versus something that is just Android-based.
This sounds neat

[Request] Samsung Ativ Q Win8/Android integration ported to Surface Pro?

Do you think is it possible to have this Windows 8/Android integration:
http://www.engadget.com/video/viddler/ac514577/
on Surface Pro? I think it's a sort of Bluestacks modded by Samsung, it's not a dual boot system.
It would be fantastic (at least for me)
That looks pretty cool. ..it would be great if it was more reliable than bluestacks, that way I could reliably run epocrates and pleco.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Actually it is supposedly running android natively according to Samsung. no idea how they are achieving that, my guess is that they got android to play nicely with Hyper-V or something and it does a full screen virtualisation (which with hyperV + haswell will still perform like a high end android tablet). Not a conventional dual boot though.
If there was some definate information about how it was done then it may well work on the surface pro too.
I think there's no virtual machine..
Seeing the amazing performace, I suppose it can be a sort of chroot executed under windows.
The presence of a kernel that supports the Core processors in Android, makes me think that no hardware is virtualized and that the instruction are executed natively in a protected area as it happens with chroot.
It wuold be awsome having the possibility to install all this on every pc in the world.
The best of the two worlds 8Q__
I'm not sure you understand how chroot works... or how operating systems in general do, actually. Android is built on top of the Linux kernel. Leaving aside the fact that Windows doesn't support chroot, chroot still requires a compatible kernel to handle system calls. Win32 system calls are different from the POSIX system calls that Linux uses. NT does have a POSIX subsystem, but it's not fully compatible with Linux (and isn't binary-compatible at all; programs need to be recompiled to run under it) and isn't included with any version of Win8 except Enterprise anyhow.
It's either a pure Dalvik runtime on x86 - which could exist, but would only execute programs that were purely Dalvik code and didn't use the native dev kit at all - or it's an Android VM of some sort (note: virtualization doesn't mean the performance is bad. You're confusing it with emulation). It's vaguely possible it runs on NT through some compatibility layer like Cygwin (except that requires recompiling) or LBW (which requires the aforementioned POSIX subsystem), but I doubt it. Android in Hyper-V seems by far the most likely to me.
It certainly has the hardware to support Hyper-V and if I were samsung that would be the route I would go down for 100% android compatibility.
This device seems far better to me than the asus transformer trio or whatever it was called. The asus device was just horribly disjointed, this seems closer to true android/windows 8 intercompatibility.
Maybe its like a backwards wine? e.g. run the linux system calls under windows? or maybe e.g. like colinux?

I don't believe that colinux has any x64 support, and it would require some rather significant reworking of Android's display layer.
@donbowman: The closest thing I know of to "backwards wine" is LBW, Linux Binaries on Windows. It's a very hacked-together and incomplete project which appears to now be abandoned, although I've considered working it myself from time to time. It requires the POSIX subsystem, which Microsoft has shown very little interest in continuing to support.
Any chance of an ARM chip in there?

I haven't looked at the hardware at all but I seriously doubt it. It's far easier and cheaper to either emulate an ARM CPU on the x64 chip or just use Androidx86 or another similar distro.
I think they said in the unveil that it is running on the haswell.
Intel offer a variant of android to device manufacturers seperate from Android-IA. So far its only been available on clovertrail but it may well have been modified to run on haswell (and HyperV or something). But it includes a wrapper for the NDK which runs native code inside an ARM emulator, yet if an app has an x86 NDK binary is still capable of running that in x86 mode. Would make including an ARM core irrelevant.
Must say, loving the look of the Q. When its out perhaps someone will be able to take a closer look at how android is actually running (and it may well be a port of dalvik rather than emulating or virtualising android or a Linux compatibility layer, my bet is on virtualisation). Then chances are it will be able to be ported or duplicated on the pro.
This is definitely possible. Go check out this website.
Update: YMMV, but android-ia did not work properly for me. The touch screen didn't work, nor did wifi or bluetooth. ALSO, when I booted back into windows, auto rotation no longer works and in the charms menu (slide from right side of screen) I see "brightness" instead of "screen" and the icon changed from that of a screen to a sun (Surface Pro). So I would not recommend trying this. Maybe I did something wrong, but still.

its always said brightness.....
Android IA does not have a surface pro image so has no drivers for its touch or WiFi, that much is obvious.
Also for it to effect your windows partition you have done something wrong yourself, android cant do that to your windows partition.

Uhm, I don't know about you, but mine always showed a "screen" icon, not a brightness icon.

I dont own a touch device but on my desktop its a brightness slider (greyed out though)
Subscribed. It would indeed be awesome to have Ativ Q Android VM ported to Surface Pro. Anyone had luck with Android-IA?

How we started:
We noticed a while back that there was a lack of quality software available that allowed users to remotely access and manage multiple Android devices.
There are great apps such as Mobizen and Airdroid available, but they are mostly designed only to support a single device and are always running in the background, creating an obvious icon in the device’s notification bar and running up battery and data use. Then there is software like mSpy and WebWatcher, which have expensive monthly subscriptions, are unstable, and don’t create a real time connection with the device. They don’t give the control that users want.
So we set out to create Monitordroid, a dedicated commercial-grade remote access and management tool for Android.
The software is also open source and capable of being used completely free of charge if you are able to set up a web server and have a little experience with Android programming.
Monitordroid is designed from the ground up to be fundamentally different than any other remote administration software for Android. It does not use sockets, SMS, or XMPP to send commands to devices, all of which have been proven unstable or slow.
The software was developed from the very beginning to be incredibly stable and crash-resistant, so that once you install it on a device you never have to worry about doing so again.
Monitordroid is designed in a way that it is only run on the mobile device when a user sends it commands through the web application. For this reason, network usage and battery consumption are nearly non-existent.
Free Open-Source Installation:
To use Monitordroid free of charge, you're going to have to have your own server with PHP 5.0+ and MySQL. If you want to run Monitordroid on your local machine, software like XAMPP will work fine. After that, you can download the source code and make a few small modifications to configure the mobile application to connect to your server. Read more detailed instructions on how to setup your own (free) server in the readme.md file at:
https://github.com/tyler124/Monitordroid-Web-Application
When your server is ready, you can follow the instructions in the readme.md file for setting up the mobile app at:
https://github.com/tyler124/Monitordroid
Monitordroid on the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.monitordroid.app&hl=en

thanks bro :fingers-crossed:
This is awesome! Will use this :good:
How do i get the app or install this?
Sent from my VS980 4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
not available for my "Nexus 7" (It is really a Kindle Fire with a build.prop MOD), can I download an apk from somewhere?
Any plans on screen casting?
Or it's not even possible
app is on play store

Afraid any features like screenshots or screencasting would require having a rooted device, which I'm not actively developing towards.
If anyone wants to contribute root-only features to the source though... :good:
Is there a limit on the number of devices that you can register to one account?
EDIT: also, there is a fine line between being useful and being useful to the point of being considered malware. DenDroid and other RAT applications have gotten huge amounts of bad press recently becuase of the functionality that they posess and the possibility of being installed without users knowledge by being packaged in other applications.
Do you have any plans in place to stop your application getting a bad name for itself? Or to stop it from being used for these kinds of purposes?
Perhaps by enforcing a manual registration process on the phone itself.
(I just want to make clear I am not, in any way, accusing this application of any sort of nefarious tasks)
EDIT2: I found the answer to my first question in your FAQ.
How many devices can I control with a single Monitordroid account?
During beta testing, Monitordroid limits users to a total of 10 devices per account. In the future, new accounts will most likely be limited to 5 devices at first, with the option to purchase more. In that case, customers who purchase in beta will still retain their 10 device maximum.

re monitoroid
Love to play with this, can it be set up on my own web server, rather than local wamp, or it needs access to android SDK files, which I guess could be done server side, just got too many other little projects on now to start trying to learn all that, I'll lock in a beta trial from your server for now, and play around on wamp when ibget a chance, then think about running off my web server, more practical in the long run, but for 10 bucks could just let you guys do all the heavy lifting, but lose a bit of full control... Good luck with the project. Could be a winner longterm
not sure if I am missing anything here, but isn't Webkey a better option with more functions and completely free?

Webkey user here. I was disappointed about not seeing remote screen view and control. But yes this requires root.
I respect not putting in root features but this is the only real feature i use of webkey.

Yes, at first I was conflicted about calling it a Remote Administration Tool due to the malicious reputation of similar tools even though that's what it really is. However, Monitordroid does require physical access to the device unlike other tools designed to be malicious which can be binded to another application's APK and spread through an app store.

mmm very basic application just for kids. NOT PRO.
No rooted features, no screen capture, stream audio, etc.
Just something any coder could code in 2 minutes.
Hope you improve it, else it is just for 4 years old kids that want to play with android

The Application is currently in a beta state with more standard features to be added soon. The application is also open-source with a good, stable foundation for server-device communication, so if someone wanted to contribute root-only features to the source I would happily be in support of that.
I may eventually develop root-only features myself, but for now i'm more focused on developing features that can be used on any device.
sounds good, downloading
