Just want start a little thread to collect a list of good programs that use mobile phone camera for input and OCR(Optical character recognition) for output of a text document...
Especially searching for hand written text recognition tool!!!
Here is initial list:
ScanR
This is an app wich can make a black and white copy of uploaded documents. it´s also possible to send the results as fax.
Another nice feature is to scan vcards.
OCR now!
this is an online service to convert a picture into a document (pdf, doc, txt).
It also handels formated text with pictures! (this is not WinMo software)
There is also this SDK(Abbyy software is known as best OCR tool in the world): http://www.abbyy.com/sdk/?param=56223
But I haven't managed to find any software which uses it yet though
You can try :

It seems to be for VGA device, not WVGA

I didn't test these OCR programs, but I wonder how would these work with devices that have poor close-range focus?
Also most of what HTC produced the last few years were devices with autofocus, not really good at "seeing" close little letters.

TopSoft, Ltd a leader in providing low cost Mobile OCR technology would like to announce the forthcoming availability of the TopOCR SDK for Mobile Devices. The TopOCR Mobile SDK targeted for Windows Mobile contains a complete Visual Studio 2005 project ready to build out of the box with full source code to the application. An Alpha version of the executable is available here (3.4 MB), as well as instructions for using the binary, and a sample test image.
SDK Target Platform
Windows Mobile 6.0
GCC CLI Embedded
Scheduled Release Date
January 2010-March 2010
The Beta R3 release is incomplete from a functionality standpoint, but can provide an evaluation of TopOCR SDK performance (accuracy and speed). The SDK supports camera images of up to 5 MP in size. Please note the following limitations:
* Only English supported
* No Deskew or Perspective Correction
The final release will replace the limitations with the following:
* Eleven languages supported
* Deskew and Perspective Correction using inline fixed point arithemetic
* Minor bug fixes and optimizations
Compare the speed, accuracy, and features of the TopOCR SDK, then compare the price and you'll see that it is the best and most cost effective solution for your OCR development needs.
People have complain on topocr. It somehow doesnt runproperly and there is problem with uninstalling it from WM
Too bad that nothing else jet emerged... Cause this combination could be jack pot for all business users.

Samsung Omnia Pro includes Smart Reader that feature ocr, vcard reading, and translation
@geoffdeath: Capturatalk looks great but it's a bit to heavy application, and it's designed for English only... It's not really designed for OCR recognition of photographed document, rather for dialectics.... sure you can partly use it but not what I'm looking for!
@ninjaw: Is smart reader importable to HTC devices and X1? it looks like dedicated card OCR - not document OCR

It is a dedeicated card reader, I tried the cab on my Treo Pro, but was getting errors.
@ninjaw: Is smart reader importable to HTC devices and X1? it looks like dedicated card OCR - not document OCR[/QUOTE]
It can read business cards and auto create Contact Card on phone, but it also can be switched to read any document and convert it to msWord, I had Samsung Omnia and used it a lot on university to copy texts from different papers without having to write them with computer, also store the taken photo.
Now I have HTC TD2 and I really miss this app, it is very usefull to copy anything you need from newspapers, magazines or anything. I can't believe there is no other app like it and that nobody found the way to make it work on other devices.
DioOCR
I have a Samsung Phone, but as I try to launch Smart Reader I get an error message saying it can't locate "DioOCR" or one of its components. Please can someone look for and upload this file for us to try? I'm sure once this file is placed in the device it willl work properly!
I was dreaming this kind of OCR someday will mature and available for Windows Mobile.
I am imagining to be able to scan and translate chinese text, japanese text ...
Btw, how is the situation in other platform?
Is there any decent OCR software on iPhone and Android?
Forget about BB
I have DioOCR on my Samsung( SmartReader) it works just fine reading text.
The only thing is it only has English available in it.
Using 5 megapixel though.

After I’ve published the Roundup of All Pocket PC Image Viewers and Editors, Resco has been silent for over 1.5 years and haven’t come up with a new version of their excellent image viewer (and a bit barebone editor), Resco Photo Viewer. Up until now, that is – they have just released the latest version of their flagship image viewer.

Availability, compatibility
The viewer is available here. It’s compatible with all Pocket PC’s starting with PPC 2002. (Note that the homepage only promises WM2003+ compatibility. This is not the case – it’s also compatible with earlier Pocket PC 2002 devices and runs just great on my 5-year-old Compaq iPAQ 3660).
It also has MS Smartphone / Symbian S60, UIQ and Palm OS versions. I’ve also checked out the latter on my Palm Tungsten T3. It also ran flawlessly and was able to zoom into 10 Mpixel images without getting pixelizated. Excellent results!
The price of the title is $24.95; you get the new version for free if you purchased the title in the last 12 months and with a 50% rebate if you’ve a customer of a previous version but purchased it before the last year. Also, if you purchase the title, you get a $5 rebate for Resco Explorer 2005, Resco Radio and Resco Audio Recorder – all top-level, highly recommended applications (see for example the Audio Recorder Bible on why I consider Resco Audio Recorder the best Pocket PC sound recorder application).
What’s new?
Regarding the Roundup (please see this article for Resco 5.31-specific info), they have fixed almost all the problems / shortcomings I’ve listed in there:
It has no longer problems in fully zooming into high-resolution photos. This means it can effectively make use of the RAM memory of devices that have plenty of them. For example, I had no problems with fully zooming into 10 Mpixel images (for example this one; this screenshot also shows this) on my 128M RAM-equipped WM2003SE VGA Pocket Loox 720. While zooming into this image, the RAM usage was around 40 Mbytes, which does also show it did zoom into the image. Also note the new zoom icons – now, it’s far easier to change the zoom percentage.
It supports the video output capabilities (see this article for more info) 2700G MPU in the Dell Axim x50v / x51v. This is also a very welcome addition and great news for all x50v / x51v users.
It supports both manual (hardware button-based) zoom in/out and scrolling around in an image. This has been missing from all the other image viewers.
It has wallpaper setting capabilities – with transparency setting. The latter is painfully missing from most (simple) Today wallpaper setter applications.
It allows for directly exporting a given image to the system-level Contacts database.
It supports WM5 softkeys.
The program has undergone a generic facelift; all icons have been changed and made much prettier.
Also see THIS for more info on the changes.
What hasn’t changed (much)?
The screen capture module (please see this full roundup of all Pocket PC-based solutions to see how Resco’s solution compares to the alternatives) hasn’t changed much as can be seen in here – there is a new Settings button, which makes it easier to set the image target and type paramers. (For comparison, the main dialog of version 5.32 can be seen in here). This means, unfortunately, there’re no radically new additions to this module.
The editing functionality of the application isn’t at all extended; the same stands for the (still) non-existing batch editing / conversions. This is not a big problem though.
Verdict
The best Pocket PC-based image viewer just got better. While it’s still lacking some (advanced, “geeky”) functionality, you won’t find better / faster generic-use photo / image viewers for the Pocket PC. Don’t forget to check it out, particularly if you’re already an owner of a previous version and are, therefore, eligible for free / rebated upgrade.
On my universal, I m having problems playing mpg files. It makes the whole unit hangs.
Somebody else having problem with Resco photo viewer on universal??
Workin great on my wizard! Love the speed, great app, definitly buying it...
I had problems viewing mpegs in Photo Viewer on my XDA Exec until I installed it to the main memory and also turned off image caching. Now works perfectly.
I just got it and it works !!!

not working yet for OMNIA
Hi,
unfortunately not working on OMNIA screen
only supporting 240,320,480,640
Working well in the UK on my hermes. No need for fake American phone numbers.
Edit:
No sound on videos. Anyone else have this issue, or is it just me?
I am sure it is a good browser. The thing that just bothers me, is, that everything is rendered at the SKYFIRE servers - now, for getting the web content including flash, jave and multimedia on my phone ... well, excellent job! However, I have some security concerns regarding online banking and other stuff I do in the web, so, I most likely won't use it because of the rendering / generating of code at the Skyfire server!
Sure, the developers will tell me "It is 100% save" but then, ... I guess you got my point?
<Just my personal opinion - I am sure lots of users will be happy with Skyfire!>
which version is it? is it different from the beta versions like 0.8xxx (i guess it is something like that)
Its still a beta, version 0.85.0.7927. Seems about the same, but there's no need to log in.

Still no multi-tab pages?
No Good for WVGA.
no mulitab but you can download stuff now
Works well on MDA Compact 4, nice to have full video etc when on wifi. Might be able to finally uninstall Opera mini (though it has been a good browser!!).
Works awesome on my HTC Wizard
Two nights ago I got bored with my htc wizard, had only wm5. I googled htc tweaks and found xda... my personal heaven now. two days later I have a phone I'm actually interested in.. with Wm6, SKYFIRE ( totally cool ) and a bunch of other apps I never knew existed. I didnt find a thread to say thanks to xda developers... but thanks... really.
btw, can anyone tell me what direction to step in if I want to learn about programming and writing software like the cool stuff I found on xda please?
Daniel
Skyfire's sound problem
There are no sound on athena x7501.
Just used it again, and the sound is now working. I didn't change anything, so it must have been a server issue.

The easiest way to get started is VS2008 but it is also commercial!
The good: It has a very nice user interface, excellent editor for writing code (with VISUAL Editor, so, not only script based) and finally as well a WINDOWS MOBILE EMULATOR integrated, so, you won't mess up your real device in case you make a mistake!
Besides that, VS2008 features different programming languages: Basic, C#, C++, Java - if you really want to program professionally, the only way to go would be C++. Other than that, I would recommend get started with Visual Basic - the language is easier to learn.
My recommendation:
Download one of the VS2008 EXPRESS Editions - it is freeware! Make some simple Windows desktop programming to get familiar with the interface and the programming language you have chosen. Join as well the MSDN Forums, hang out at www.codeproject.com - a great place snd source for programming techniques and code samples - and if you're finally still interested in programming, get the commercial version of VS2008 and start programming as well for PDA and Smartphone - it is really fun, trust me!
Sure, some people might come up now with the good old "It is .NET!" arguement, well, sure it is .NET! .NET is part of Windows since Windows XP SP1 and now also fully integrated in WM6.1, so, no big deal! For older platforms, the .NET distributables are available for free download.
However,
Try out cool stuff like this, go through the code to understand what it does, program your own little helpers and once you master it, you will have an easier intro to non-.NET C++ programming (which then will provide you with the full power of programming. The reason why I recommend VS2008 at first, it is very easy for non-Programmers to do stuff in there. You will in addition find millions of places / forums with how-to's.
If you make a quick jump to C++ directly (non-VS) then you most likely will get frustrated very soon since documentation and everything else is mostly written for people who know C++ inside out - VS takes you into the programming world slightly and there is much more help and lots of beginner guides available - this is why I recommend it to beginners, not to promote .NET.
Hi xda community,
Since opera stopped development for windows mobile, i started to search alternative browser solution for windows mobile and couldn't find one. So i started to port arora browser to windows mobile. After studying qt platform (which i didn't use before) and Windows virtual memory, i made it work. Most of its features are working. I also added multi touch zoom and kinetic scrolling. Most of them are hacked into code and code is dirty right now.
Most difficult part was 32mb limit of virtual memory, i found a good article to overcome this problem using multiple heaps.
Also i reduced thread count and stack size of webkit and qt.
To reduce the dll sizes of QT i removed most of the features and made optimizations.
I will release the code and modifications that i made to QT source (if i can clean up qt part) and arora source.
Most of the people may blame me for not using Android. I like android but i like windows mobile too, i didn't use many applications, i like it more like phone. Besides, android is still developed for hd2 where i don't like to change version all the time.
It's still buggy, i don't know i can finish it but will try.
What do you think about it?
http://imgur.com/a/EXvSp
Also how can i load flash module?
[14/04/2011]
Cosmetic changes to completer
Removed forward history button for non landscape mode
Work on flash support
Increased dns thread count to 5
Opera like location bar stretch
Added autohide for status bar
reduced size of font
auto select all text for first time link click
And some pictures

another reserve for woot
That's great you chose Windows Mobile. There are plenty of browser for Android, but to find something modern on WM... Just hoping you're find audience big enough.
WOW, 100/100 in Acid 3 test, that's impressive.
Does it support fullscreen?
http: //i.imgur.com/GRowL.png
It supports a bit but menubar still there, there might be a attribute switch somewhere.
My current priority is reduce the memory limitation bugs and implement a better scroll and scrollbar.
It supports many many options, arora is full featured browser and i only removed ad blocker (It was costing to much cpu, who needs adblocker on mobile browser anyway)
for full features
http: //code.google.com/p/arora/
Edit: Also removed web inspector (again who needs firebug like thing in webbrowser )
Is there any DL link available?? Curious to take a look...
Not for now, its still unstable on real hardware (hd2).
I fixed lots of stability problems because of limitations but didn't test them.
Also since it's a desktop browser, it's ui is less user friendly. i'm trying to fix these issues.
Btw it's size is big because of webkit and qt. Webkit dll is 9.98mb.
Great!
This looks like a fantastic project. A decent browser with full flash would pretty much make the hd2 experience for me, thanks to everyone who still develops for WM!
Thank you for doing this, i'm looking forward for a release. I'm very glad that developers are still doing great stuff for winmo, my favorite OS. I'll follow your thread.
Great Work
Thank you for the effort you are putting into this. I think that xdadevelopers must be one of the best forums out there because of al the talented people contributing like yourself
Mark
rooting for you mate best of luck with this project, winmo really needs this
subscribing to this..very nice..
sounds fantastic, really looking forward to this. thanks and good luck !!
i will try to post daily updates to second post and thanks for support.
If you make this happen and working good I'll go back to wm! Thanks for sharing this!
hd2 user making web browser for hd2 and support flash !!
thats what i going to subscribe to for sure, good luck but please consider graphic it well for buttons etc dont be like developers caring for codes and result and forgetting the look
Nice Thing, i really appreciate your work, all i needed was a browser that supports flash for our wm hd2
Woot! Another excited HD2 owner here
Waiting for your hardwork ! Sounds great man !
Hi,
I wasnt updating for a long time, because i could not resolve virtual memory problems.
I'm trying different build to test which one uses minimal virtual memory. Small sites work well but while loading big sites , like xda, application throws exceptions. (most probably virtual memory)
I tried these,
1)Static linking of qt on one exe file arora
2)Static linking of qt on small exe that starts bigger arora dll
3)Dynamic linking of qt on one exe file arora
4)Dynamic linking of qt on small exe that starts arora dll
I'm still testing most applicable solution to pass virtual memory limitation but there is always another problem. Manila uses most of the slot 60 and 61 and kernel cant address qt dll's to that place, because of this it adresses the dll's of qt, on local stack. I will try different solutions to pass this thing but i have a real life work to do, so updates will be slow.
Btw i'm using dutty rom (v14 i think) I'm going to post a screenshot of the virtual memory slot 60 and 61, if you are using newer version of dutty or another rom, can you please post your screenshot here too. Program will be in attachments

macroMote, the only remote control application you need for your computer. Functionality? Using a command based system macroMote allows you to easily create the functionality you need to take control of your computer remotely. Design? With its tabbed layout organizing your macros has never been easier, this means your macros can be categorised how you want them to be. Simplicity? Everything about macroMote screams simplicity, after all that’s what a remote is for right? Macros can still be created (and removed) while clients (yes, more than one device can be connected at the same time!) are connected; the changes will be synced to all of the devices in real-time.
Features
- Command system to create whatever functionality you need
- Tabbed design for easy access
- Connect as many devices as you want
- Changes are synced in real-time to all devices
- macroMote Server compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac
Planned Features
- Added security (PIN to connect)
- Ability to save IP address
- Ability to change port
- Better tablet support
This really is the definition of universal.
Silly example macro, opens chrome and navigates to XDA
Code:
shell "cmd /C start chrome --start-maximized"
wait 2000
move "155,45"
click left
wait 500
type "XDA "
type ENTER
wait 1500
move "192,280"
click left
REQUEST : Please can you test this on your Linux/Mac machines. It should work but unfortunately I haven't had chance to fully test it (especially on Mac)
Please post your feedback for any improvements, commands and bugs!
How To? Mirror

Reserved - Update information should go here.
This looks good but I have one question/concern.
How does the remote know which application to send the macro commands too? In other words, that VLC tab you have will only be useful if VLC is your currently active window.
It would be nice if each macro command could be directed towards a specific application running on your computer. If I want to control my iTunes music via remote, I don't want to maximize it first.
Make sense?
That is a very good question! I've thought about this and it still needs some work. With the server being programmed in Java it means I don't have access to external sources like window names and other useful things. It would mean I need to use the system API's (which of course then means I would need to figure out a way to get it to work on Linux and Mac too). Which means its going to be a pain in the ass. Fortunately must commonly used applications listen out for hot keys regardless of focus.
A simple solution would be? :
press ALT
type TAB
release ALT

- Added Mirror Links to 'How To?' and 'Server' (My site host seems to be blocking the links...)
400+ Views... one reply.
It would be nice if people could leave some feedback? I put a lot of time into this.
So you have to be at the PC when writing set commands for each remote function?
Have you thought about being able to write a custom function on the Android phone then pushing that to the server then executing it?
Would like to have a little play with this app though, I like the idea Could maybe interpret something like this into a smart tv one day with a bit of modification.
Good Job
Yes, well the idea was that you set-up all of your macros on the computer before hand (prevents security issues). Since you will only need to write the macro once.
I developed this to function as an AIO remote to be used with any software and OS on your computer (where other remote controllers fail). I would of continue developing it, but it seems nobody is interested or doesn't understand what it does fully. I think I might just release the Pro version for free.

I would try and offer some ideas but as you said it lies with using System API's.... Would be a huge improvement if you did manage to figure it out.
And yes the XDA feedback is sometimes.....

Hey there guys, I'm writing in the off topic section about this e-cigarette I've just got, it's called Joyetech Ocular C and it comes with a color touch screen , music player and photo viewer capabilities , bluetooth conectivity, a pedometer to count your steps and from what I understand, it has around 2Gb of memory , it is firmware upgradeable and I'm wondering if there is more that can be done to it in therms of functionality.
It's true that vapers, the people who smoke e-cigarettes as their called, dont really need any of this functionality in their devices since they mainly use them purely for smoking, it's nice however to have something a little extra to go with it.
I've looked online for custom firmwares or methods to customise your firmware for these type of devices, but i've only found info on old devices that come with small monochrome screens and the most you can do is upload logos on to the device.
My interests are on how you can access the root of the system built into these devices since it must have a processor and a file sistem inside, how to edit some of these files , per example, you have the option to upload around 100 pictures and some songs ( the memory on it is 2GB ) but there's no way of deleting them once uploaded, in case your storage gets full.
Also it would be nice if users could implement or extent more functionality in the device, par example it only suports .jpeg files in the photo viewer , .png &/or .gif to use as a screen saver would be nice, more so even video playback capability .
And before I get laffed at for asking so much out of an electronic cigarette, I think that since it does come from the factory with all these functionalities and hardware, it's a shame they dont use it to it's fullest.
So is there anyone having any clues on how to "get inside" these devices and tuning them up ?
I've included the latest firmware I could find for the device as well as the program they offer for you to upload it onto the device. If anybody could crack it opn and take a look inside and see at least what's in there, that would be a start.

I don't see this going anywhere. What you have is more like a storage media with a viewable screen. It's not an actual information processing device.
You are wasting your time, if it was created for uploading and viewing photos then I doubt it has the hardware for video. Plus, I doubt it has enough battery to support more than what it does.
Pick something else to play with, this is a frivolous endeavor.
