I have received the MDA Vario III this week and started to backup all SMS, etc from my old Vario I.
Before that, I have simunlocked my Vario III and put on the official WM6.1 ROM (ROM 3.03.405.0.WWE, Radio 1.64.06.04),
I have backupped my old SMS, etc on the Vario I with PIM Backup (but also used HTC Data Backup) and trasfered the backup-file to my Vario III.
There I did a restore.
Contacts, call history, etc was restored fine.
Only problem is that not all my SMS was restored.
PIM Backup said to have restored 25 SMS (which is correct), but on the Vario III is shows only like 10 SMS in my inbox.
Does the Vario III automatically hide some SMS or something ?
Someone had the same problem ?
This has been discussed on the PIM backup thread. Have a look there for answers. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
I had to restore twice. Once missed half of the messages I received. The second time they all appeared. I think I used the SMS/MMS software to clear all messages before the second restore.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction....I guess I completely overlooked it
I have tried several restores already, even only messages restore (or even only inbox restore), but I keep having only 10 messages where the database clearly says that 25 messages are in it.....
Strange....but I will discuss this further in the right thread.

this is only my personal opinion, for me the performance of WM6.1 is superb however the only thing i feel disadvantange/a little disappointed about WM6.1 is the way of sms program showing the message. i still like the old one style. really appreciated if you have the software to change it to the old one.

Hi
I have an xda 2.
I recently carried out a hard reset to clean up my xda 2.
Unfortunately when I tried restoring my back up (from active sync) there appears 2 be a problem with old sms messages.
I had created a number of sub-folders where I had moved my old messages.
I can see the old sms messages in the folder but I can not open, read or forward them. There are no problems with new sms messages.
Has anyone come acrosss this before and can you advise me on how to retrieve these please?
Thanks.
Salim
....No response...does noboby love me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I've had a look through the forums and have foubd similarish problems but nothing seems to help
This is wht I have done so far
1. Downloaded mobile vault to interrogate my back up - but this has proved futile as when I go to where I believe the sms messages are the ones I want are blank (even though I can see them in the sms folder but not expand them).
2. I downloaded Jeye Mobile companion and Jeyo Outlook extender
JMC did not help much
Jeyo Outlook Extender will let me read the SMS messages that are in my inbox (but not accessible via the XDA II). However, any stored in the other folders I have set up are not accessible (I don't seem to be able to see the folders I have set up on the XDA II).
3. I have performed more hard resets - and backups any sms in the back up (even in the inbox) suffer the same fate of not being readable (But I have now backed up mu more recent ones elsewhere).
Well I'm exhausting my options now.
Any help would be more than welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I have searched the forums but haven't had much luck - if anyone knows of a similar post that has had a reply then could they point me to it).
Any news
Has anyone ever found a way round this?
Similar problem - looking for a solution also.
I had to restore after my SPV M2000 hard reset itself and I cannot view Old or NEW sms messages (apart from when the message bubble is shown as a new message arrives). My messaging inbox, drafts, outbox and deleted items all show the number of messages in them, but I cannot view or access any of them.
Is there any way these messages can be accessed or deleted?
Help!!
Any solution yet
Hi... has anyone figured a way around this yet?
I've spoken to someone at o2 and they said it had something to do with the way the inbox is recognised/linked.
After a hard reset the system is given a new id...but the old messages are linked to an older id....
There must be someway around this.
If I can see the message headers surely there must eb a way of reading the messages!!!!!
HELP PLEASE
A work around if you're stuck
I use Sprite backup which caused this problem after a restore. After raising it with their support team they supplied me with the attached file which allows SMS messages to be received and read.
BE AWARE that all messages on the device will be deleted, but new messages received will work. This will erase SMS, MMS & any emails that are on the device, so use with caution. Make sure you have a full backup!!!
I was using spbbackup I also have sms backup and pim backup and none of them seem to beable to import the sms/mms that I had on my 6.0 rom to 6.1, I don't know if this has to do because 6.1 uses a threaded style sms...any advice?

The latest version of PimBackup works fine.
Once backed up, "Threaded SMS" will convert the conversations properly.
I used PPCPimBackup and it restored my SMS to the 'official' .02 HTC 6.1 rom no problems whatsoever
this did not however restore my SMS to the "Alex 6.1" builds...it restored select messages totally out of order and only about 1/10th of the messages

wow...I know this is an old thread, but that is definitely a good find. Now my threads are in order. Thanks.
why do people keep their sms and mms messages? Do you not use email? I am not judging, just curious why one would want to keep their sms messages? Do you also move them to different folder like email users?

Is there any chance to restore SMS if I bucked up them via SK tools?
Hey, i have Windows Mobile 6.1 and for any SMS thats over a day old, it doesnt show the time, only the date. Is there any way I can see the details of the message or have it so it shows (day/month hours:minutes:seconds)?
Also, is there a programs that backs up the messages, but keeps the threaded conversations structure? Because Im using PIM Backup and when i restore my SMS from a backup, it groups the sent and then the received.
thanks in advance
hate to double post, but can anybody help me?
SMS Database
Hi
I can't advise on the day/date stamp of older SMS conversations. However, in terms of the "threaded" structure, this is only a method of displaying the SMS Messages sent and received. Both Threaded and Standard views of SMS messages sent and received use the same database. I think they're in pim.vol, but others may be able to elaborate on that point.
Either way, I think that if you can successfully back up and restore this database you should be able to display the restored messages in standard or threaded mode.
Cheers
andrew-in-woking
thank you,
but i did successfully restore the database,
but when it is restored, the sent and received are grouped.
like this:
before the backup:
sent message 1
received message 1
sent message 2
received message 2
and then after restoring the backup:
sent message 1
sent message 2
received message 1
received message 2
theyre in the right order, just not like a conversation
try spb backup
searching for the same thing since I switched to 6.1 . and the only way I found was to disable the threadview with Advanced Config (or any other programm that can toogle this)..
I read something that other roms CAN have this feature that they display date and time.. but never seen that "live" :/

I too wonder why cant we have the completedetails about the time stamp on the SMS like any ordinary mobile phone has. many a times one definitely feels the need to know these details..
Regarding the backing up the SMS you can use ppcpimbkup by dotfred..It works just perfect...
PowerSMS is free and packs a few extra features... It's what I use personally.

you sure these restore sms (in threaded view) in the right order?
Does anyone know how to backup SMS messages on WM5 and restore them to WM6.1?
Here's the rom I'm using (Sprint/version 1.2) http://forum.xda-
developers.com/showthread.php?t=397134
I tried PIMBackup it can backup and restore the messages fine on WM5 but it can't restore them to WM6.1. I do notice that it seems to have a seperate SMS client rather than just using "Messaging" like WM5 did, maybe that's why it won't work?
It's strange, a few will show up then stop. If I delete some of those a few more will come up. If I soft reset a few MIGHT come up.
It seems to be random, I can get anywhere from 10 to 100 to show up after a restore.
I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Kenny
I think I got it, don't know how...
I decided to try "SMSBackup" to look at the app I ran a backup on WM6.1.
And it backed up all my messages.
When the backup was complete my phone was counting up messages.
Up to 160 right now....
backup
Pimbackup is the simplest tool. find the attached enjoy more than you needed
Thanks for the reply that was actually the first thing I tried.
But I couldn't see the messages after the restore. It caused the behavior above.
With SMSBackup I can now see my inbox.
Still nothing in my Sent Items, but I don't really care.
Funny thing is if I do a backup it backs up all my sent items.
I guess it's just some more buggy palm software.
Thanks,
Kenny
Hi,
here is my situation: I am jumping around wm6.1 (maybe wm6.5) ROMs and I would like to restore my threaded SMS. The SMS will restore fine but waiting for it to rethread is a pain (really lots of SMSes).
My question is: is there a known way to backup the SMSes, with the already threaded structure, and then during restore, you don't have to wait for it to rethread (as in after restore, it will be back in the threaded state immediately)?
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
PS: I have so much SMSes that threading itself will take about 8 hours itself without going to standby. So its really a pain to have a downtime of 8 hours after every single flash.

you can use ppc pim backup but it will not keep the thread sorted by date....so you could try disabling the threaded mode...backup them as single smses and restore them....and after that re enable the threaded mode...
that was just a tip...i haven't still tested it myself but one thing is sure...pimbackup doesn't backup threads correctly

Hi,
thanks for the input. Yup, in fact, that is exactly what I am doing now. Backup and restores fine but the re-threading itself takes like 8 hours.
Have read that some people only need like 20mins for 3000 messages. Not sure why mine took 8 hours...
lol, 8hours? Jeez, call me pedantic but surely its better not to keep so many on the device, leave them backed up on PIM BU for future reference, the device will work so much quicker.
fyi i backup my text each month to keep them in check and device clean
