SDHC & XP Compatibility Issues - General Topics

Hi Folks
I've trawled the forums but I can't see anything directly relational about this matter.
Basically I bought a 4gb SDHC card which didn't work, so I returned it. The replacement has the same issue. Having looked a bit around I found there was a hotfix from Microsoft (google ms hotfix sdhc).
Considering how people here use their PDAs I thought there would be some mention.
Perhaps I am the only one who does not have Windows up to date and thus this is the reason
Oh, and you need a validated XP to get this hotfix. Still, to be expected I suppose....

Some Secure Digital (SD) cards do not work correctly on Windows XP-based computers. Additionally, you may notice a yellow exclamation mark (!) next to the SD card in Device Manager.
This problem may occur even though you have applied other hotfixes that are required for high-capacity SD card support. For more information, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
923293 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923293/) The 923293 hotfix adds support for SD High Capacity memory cards in Windows XP
934428 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934428/) Hotfix for Windows XP that adds support for SDHC cards that have a capacity of more than 4 GB
However, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923293/ means that you need to tell them about your situation before they let you have the file. I've already downloaded 934428 so we'll see where that takes me

Which puts me back at square one, because I still can't read SDHC cards through the PC. I can access it through the PDA and it seems to work ok there but not through the actual card reader.
Thod

I believe the Microsoft hotfixes are specific to certain readers. Other readers (for example, the memory card slots on a monitor) use a different driver, which needs to be updated.
For example, I have a Dell 2405FPW, and it is not compatible with SDHC, even after the Microsoft hotfix. However, I can read my SDHC card using the USB adapter that came with the SDHC (actually microSDHC), even without the Microsoft hotfix.

These hotfixes are for XP not the device. The device can read it ok, but MS Windows XP can't!!!
I have got around it now. Plug the SDHC into the PDA, and the PDA into the computer. Bit slow but gets there in the end!

are you sure your card reader supports sdhc?
i had a (old) microsd to sd card convertor, that wasn't capible of reading sdhc? did the card reader come with your sdhc card?

I found out on the DELL official website the firmware upgrade for the reader and the SDHC Patch.
Problem is that they did the updates exclusively for there desktop brands and not for the DELL monitor apart.
So.. if someone can tweak the firmware and the driver to bypass these check routines, maybe we can succeed?
Here are the links:
Driver (SDHC Patch): http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=32&fileid=240264
Firmware:

I recently purchased a Toshiba R500 notebook which has a SD card reader built-in. I was unable to get my SDHC cards to work in it until I ran the XP SP3 upgrade on my Notebook. Apparently it has all of the new drivers included in the fix. Now the card reader works with all my cards including my 8gb microSDHC with SD adapter.

I have SP3 on my XP and that does not solve my problem

SP3 doesn't help! Boo!!!
Any one found a solution fro this problem. I just installed SP3 and still no dice reading Micro SDHC cards with builtin card reader or with usb readers. Readers will detect but say to insert a disk when an 4 or 8 gb card is inserted. 1 and 2 gb cards (non sdhc) seem to work fine.
Hot fixes will not install over SP3 says newer service pack already installed.
I guess ill try to get the wmstorage working on my device for the mean time, it is somewhat more quicker than using active synch for data transfers between my the device and computer.

Check under device manager what is the brand of your built-in card reader and google the company to see if they have a firmware update or new drivers for the unit.

Too bad, it seems to be generic... "Generic USB Card Reader Driver v2.2e4" eMachines site has a northstar media reader driver maybe I'll try that. I wsould do a search with vendor ID and Product ID but card reader seems to be inactive unless there is a card less than 2 gb installed. I'll also investigate that, after i locate a non sdhc card. No dice with the external usb reader either... vid 058f pid 6335. Found drivers for this guy but no firmware.
Maybe ill drop by an electronics store and see if any card readers indicate they can read sdhc cards. Active Sync xfers are sloooow! WM5storage is slightly faster, but not as quick as a working card reader...

older readers are not compatible with sdhc cards and only fix is a firmware upgrade
i got a microSdhc card and it could not be read by
sandisk cruze sd to usb using the sd->microSd conveter
thinkpad t61 with sd->microSd conveter
sandisk 8-1 usb reader sd->microSd conveter
but hp tx1270 had no problems using sd->microSd conveter
got a sandisk micoSD to usb thingy and everybody reads it just fine

I guess i need a new card reader!

My 8 gb micro came with a generic SD card reader and sd adaper, but no dice. My eMachines is kind of an older notebook, so im not surprised that i wouldnt work... I guess i was hoping newer drivers would correct this issue but no cigar. I had a transflash/micro sd reader that came with my DS Modchip but no dice with that either.
i will go to and look for a name brand card reader such as your sandisk adapter. At least with a name brand i will have better support than with my current generic readers.
Any additional info on your sandisk reader?
Thanks everbody for all of your help!

microSDHC 6gb working on my p3600

I have now a microSDHC 6gb in my p3600.
It is a Sandisk microSDHC 6gb in a microSD to miniSD adapter from Kingston.
I have about 4.5 gb data on it, many mp3's.
On this moment it works fine. Have anybody try this before?
(I have AX3L WM6 rom on my p3600)
Brilliant!
It boggles my mind why they have 6/8 gb micros, but not minis....soooo irritating. Guess I'll give your method a try since it seems to be working. Looking forward to more than 4gb on my phone!!!
Mike
Please tell me if you need any patch to do that?
I also have 3.0.8..AX3L WM6, please tel me if I need further patch or cab to enable my trinity SDHC compatible as when I was downloading the ROM I saw a SDhc cab I wasn't sure that time if I should had download & install it to make my trinity SDHC compatible. Plaese anybody guide me I'll be very thankful. I intend to buy 8gb sdhc. ???? please email me at [email protected] as I might loose track of this thread. Thanks
I have installed AX3L 3.1.1 Lite.
I didn't load a SDHC patch. I had buy a miniSDHC 4 gb and it works without a problem.
Now I have the MicroSDHC 6gb.
The 8gb MicroSDHC is comming in the next months.
Cool, thanks for the conformation that 6GB MicoSDHC’s with Micro>Mini adapters work in our WM6 Trinity.
Has anyone else tried a 6GB in a WM5 ROM by using the various patches around?
There are so many RegEdits and DLL’s floating around for SDHC support that I thought I’d try and collate them by viewing the contents of the CAB’s and doing some binary comparisons.
These are just my opinions and I welcome anyone who can correct/enlighten me.
1)
HTC_SDHCsettings.cab – 4.4KB
This one from lvsw basically adds a bunch of registry keys about BuiltIn SDHC and StorageManager but doesn’t add or modify any files.
2)
sdhc.cab – 66.4KB
This can be found all over the forum under different names. It adds two DLL’s but doesn’t add/modify the registry.
a) sdbus.dll – 47.4KB
b) sdmemory.dll – 15.4KB
3)
miniSD HC Patch v2.2.cab – 15.6KB
This one by AX3L adds the same sdmemory.dll from 2b and nothing else.
4)
SDHC drivers WM6.zip and here– 69.4KB
This has some extra fixes that have been proven to work in E-TEN’s.
a) sdhc.cab with the same two DLL’s as 2a&b.
b) Certs.cab – 4.59KB which adds a bunch of certifications (not sure what else it does).
After installing the two DLL’s to \Windows\ and the Cert’s, then you copy these two slightly different DLL’s across.
c) sdbus.dll – 47.8KB
d) sdmemory.dll – 15.8KB
I don’t have a SDHC to try this out on but will get one while in Japan next month. It would be nice if someone could try out a combination of these on WM5 to see if they work. I think a combination of 1 & 4 might do the trick
@ janegsm or anyone with AX3L 3.1.1 please check out these two sets of DLL’s and do a binary comparison with the ones installed on your ROM.
Would be nice to get some closure on this
OK, so I dumped AX3L’s 3.1.2c and did a binary comparison on the apparent DLL’s. As suspected they are different again to the previous DLL sets.
Only problem is, I don’t know what to do with the S000,S001,… files, convert them to reg entries? They mention reading the cards using block mode addressing and not byte mode addressing which is promising.
AX3L has pointed out on other threads that SDHC is controlled by many DLL’s and they are ROM specific, so I might just be talking round in circles, but if someone can do something useful with this then we might be able to get a working SDHC patch for the Trinity!
BTW janegsm, what class of MicroSDHC do you have? Class 4 appears to be most common at the moment.
im interested to know whether anyone has these running on a standard WM6 rom from HTC.
Also, are there any speed related issues with using microSD cards? there certainly are speed differences between SD and miniSD cards (mainly noticeable in my digital camera though).
Lastly, i can't seem to find any miniSDHC cards over 4gb. Is it just me, or there really isn't any out there? Why are there larger capacities for microSD and SD formats?

Simple... electronics are getting smaller thereby the need to use a smaller card i.e. less real estate for the socket. Lots of companies are shying away from the mini to migrate to the micro. Mini manufactures see this trend and don't wish to spend resources developing and tooling for the mini when a micro with adapter will do the same thing. Hope this helps
umh, no one have try micro sdhc on WM5? the fix realy work?
where i can buy only micro to mini sd adapter? i have find only kingston package with micro to mini, micro to sd and micro sd of 1GB or 2Gb not more big.
I have WM6 ROM on my p3600.
I had buy a Sandisk microSDHC 6gb class 4.
Also I buy a Kingston 2gb micro, this is a set with 2 adapters: microSD to miniSD and microSD to SD.
I use only the sandisk 6gb and the microSD to miniSD adapter.
(I sell the 2gb MicroSD)
(When the Sandisk microSDHC 8gb comms I will buy the 8gb to.)

I would like to try on my wizard with wm6 and SDHC kingston 4Gb. Have one that cabs worked? Any suggest to my download and trial?
just wonder how can micro-sd crad work in place of mini-sd ...anyone can tell me

No luck with WM5. I tried all the options above (except #3) and the best I could get was to have a 6GB micro SD recognized as a 2GB card. Any solutions that will work with WM5 would be welcome, as WM6 is not an option for me right now.

Gutted, I still haven't heard of anyone getting this to work with a WM5 Trinity
Have you tried using AX3L's DLL's (from post 6 of this thread) after installing the certs.cab?
There has been a surprising amount of success here which is exactly the same as option #4 of my post you quoted.
I still don't have a SDHC card but will probably jump straight to the 8GB, although there still seems to be issues being able to see more than 4GB of the 8GB cards even using Trinity WM6.
Now I'm even more determined to get this working on WM5.
Still No Luck w WM5

I followed up on both of your suggestions. I tried the thread you pointed me to and I tried using AX3L's DLL's. The only thing I got out of the process was a lot of trouble overwriting the DLL's. When I succeeded, the cards were not showing up at all. Otherwise, the system only saw 1.7gb of my 6gb Micro SDHC.
Hi, I am trying to install the patch for SDHC on a HTC P3300 phone with WM6. I cant copy the dll files to the windows directory which seems to be read only but cant find a way to change that. Can someone help?

New Problems with Micro SDHC Card, help needed
Problem: I was using a SanDisk 6GB MicroSDHC Card with MiniSD-Adaptor in my Trinity (P3600):
With the Original WM5 Rom there was no chance; when I switched to Bepe's WM6 German it was recognized at once and working (still I think a bit slower than a 4GB MiniSD Card) but the older my installation of WM6 got (or perhaps the MicroSDHC Card) the problems got worse: Very slow when using something that was on the Card and finally no chance to work with the card anymore. Then I formatted the card in my PC and did a new installation of the same Bepe WM6 ROM on my P3600. Since that time there is no chance to use the card in the phone: it doesn't get recognized, did't matter what I tried. But in my much older TyTN with WM6, the card works perfectly!?!
Maybe anybody has an idea. e.g.: I wanted to format it in my Trinity or TyTN, but I can't find any option for that.
(Funny: When I put on my camera in Trinity, it asks to use Main or Card memory, I chose card an it hangs (needs softreset); memory manager says no card at same time; I put the card out and in my TyTN and open explorer and can see that the trinity has made new my documents and pictures folders on the card???)
edit: Seems to be a Trinity failure: Now I tried my older 4GB MiniSD card and 2GB MiniSD card in the Trinity and it doesn't recognize any of it; so it should be a Trinity failure?
Does anybody have a clou what I could try to do or will the device have to go to repair?
Thanks a lot for any suggestions!

Nokia N82 Memory Card Format

Hello, I'm new to this forum and have a question about Micro SD Cards in Nokia phones.
Basically I bought a Nokia N82, which included a 2GB Micro SD Card in the package. When I look at the card in a card reader with Win XP, it reports the format as RAW and can see the files on it.
There is an option in the Nokia phone to format the SD Card. I did this in fact with an 8GB SanDisk Micro SDHC Card and it worked OK in the phone but now I cannot read it in the XP Card Reader.
I think I read that it is best to format the SD card with the phone for best performance. I am not familiar with this RAW Format (though I know about RAW files).
What format does Nokia (Symbian) use for formatting it's SD cards?
Anyone know if it is possible to read this 8GB SDHC Card formatted in the Nokia, in WinXP? I did see some comment about 4GB limits, which required Microsoft patches and anyway, the 8GB card could be read by the card reader (FAT format) before I reformatted in the Nokia.
Any ideas please?
Thanks
knotlob
ok. now heres the thing. This is a WINDOWS MOBILE forum. The N82 doesn't run on Windows Mobile.
But anyway, about your question. Does the FAT formatted microsd work on your phone? If so, i don't see what the matter is.

Thanks - sorry was not thinking - originally joined the forum for the Dell Axim PDA info!!
The question was that having formatted my 8GB SDHC card on the Nokia, I cannot read it in Win XP and wondered what format it would be in now and if it was possible to read it in Win XP with a patch, etc. It would be easier to transfer files from the PC to the SDHC Card using a card reader than the phone I think.

How nice, not only does nokia apparently have a windows mobile solution they also appear to use SDHC now.
Soon symbian might even end up as a proper programming language and not some deformed java throwback!

16GB microSD [Class 4]... Error or Scam?

Does anyone know a reason why a 16gb [class 4] would only let 8gb (7.5) be written to it?
It is a Kingston, and I am fairly certain the card is authentic. It indicated a full 16gb capacity out of the box, but got the "cannot copy or create: parameter is incorrect" message when 7.5gb was reached. Tried a format, and now 7.5gb is the recognized figure. At the moment am using a SanDisk ImageMate All-in-One reader (brand new; has a dedicated microsd slot, but will only read it through the SD slot via adapter).
Any thoughts? (and I hope it's not that someone went through the trouble of re-labelling it and programming it to read a false capacity)
Thanks everyone
those traits you mentioned are very viable symptoms for a fake memory card.
-Does your OS recognise it as a 16 GB? My computer -> Removable device -> Properties??-
Sorry misread your post
Have you tried it on another pc and/or with another cardreader (or maybe just with your handset, plug in your sd-card and use it as a cardreader)
Daan
btw, not all readers are capable of reading 16gbs... might want to try another one tho it does sound as if it's a fake

Unable to recognize SDHC (Sandisk SDHC 8GB)

Hello everybody, I've just bought my new Galaxy s, so I've put my old sd card into the phone but, surprise, the sd results unreadable and it's impossible to format. On the contrary, if i try to plug the sd card into an usb port of my PC: no problem.
The card was working very well till now on my samsung omnia.
Anybody encountered problem on sd card?
Is there a way to make the card readable again to the galaxy s?
thanks in advance...
my SD card is:
SanDisk Mobile Ultra® microSDHC™
the 16 GB sandisk micro sdhc card i just got in yesterday (and returned) came with a small 66k "media manager" program (full name "sandisk media manager") that one of the steps was for the user to select the actuall make/model of phone you wanted the media to format the card to or for
you might try sandisk's web and see if that program is available for download -
it installed on my computer, so i saved it for the next card, but, in case that helps
SOLVED!
Thank's for the tip.
I wasn't able to find the Sandisk tool, anyway I installed a software from HP to format the SD Card in FAT 32 filesystem, and .. it worked!
The sofwater is HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (SP27608.exe), maybe it can be useful to others...
cheers

** What brand?
** 16 GB with Class 2 can be very slow very often.
** In some cases, windows can do funny things to cards formatted on windows, when used with android. A very good time-tested software for formatting sd cards is from Panasonic here: http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html
Try formatting with this.
Good luck!

Also try to have the Transformer format the card instead of using Windows to format the card. There are probably several little differences in formatting with Windows versus the Android device. For instance a movie that is over 4GB in size or something similar to that may or may not appear.
