SDHC & XP Compatibility Issues

Hi Folks
I've trawled the forums but I can't see anything directly relational about this matter.
Basically I bought a 4gb SDHC card which didn't work, so I returned it. The replacement has the same issue. Having looked a bit around I found there was a hotfix from Microsoft (google ms hotfix sdhc).
Considering how people here use their PDAs I thought there would be some mention.
Perhaps I am the only one who does not have Windows up to date and thus this is the reason
Oh, and you need a validated XP to get this hotfix. Still, to be expected I suppose....

Some Secure Digital (SD) cards do not work correctly on Windows XP-based computers. Additionally, you may notice a yellow exclamation mark (!) next to the SD card in Device Manager.
This problem may occur even though you have applied other hotfixes that are required for high-capacity SD card support. For more information, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

However, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923293/ means that you need to tell them about your situation before they let you have the file. I've already downloaded 934428 so we'll see where that takes me

Which puts me back at square one, because I still can't read SDHC cards through the PC. I can access it through the PDA and it seems to work ok there but not through the actual card reader.

I believe the Microsoft hotfixes are specific to certain readers. Other readers (for example, the memory card slots on a monitor) use a different driver, which needs to be updated.
For example, I have a Dell 2405FPW, and it is not compatible with SDHC, even after the Microsoft hotfix. However, I can read my SDHC card using the USB adapter that came with the SDHC (actually microSDHC), even without the Microsoft hotfix.

These hotfixes are for XP not the device. The device can read it ok, but MS Windows XP can't!!!
I have got around it now. Plug the SDHC into the PDA, and the PDA into the computer. Bit slow but gets there in the end!

are you sure your card reader supports sdhc?
i had a (old) microsd to sd card convertor, that wasn't capible of reading sdhc? did the card reader come with your sdhc card?

I found out on the DELL official website the firmware upgrade for the reader and the SDHC Patch.
Problem is that they did the updates exclusively for there desktop brands and not for the DELL monitor apart.
So.. if someone can tweak the firmware and the driver to bypass these check routines, maybe we can succeed?

I recently purchased a Toshiba R500 notebook which has a SD card reader built-in. I was unable to get my SDHC cards to work in it until I ran the XP SP3 upgrade on my Notebook. Apparently it has all of the new drivers included in the fix. Now the card reader works with all my cards including my 8gb microSDHC with SD adapter.

Any one found a solution fro this problem. I just installed SP3 and still no dice reading Micro SDHC cards with builtin card reader or with usb readers. Readers will detect but say to insert a disk when an 4 or 8 gb card is inserted. 1 and 2 gb cards (non sdhc) seem to work fine.
Hot fixes will not install over SP3 says newer service pack already installed.
I guess ill try to get the wmstorage working on my device for the mean time, it is somewhat more quicker than using active synch for data transfers between my the device and computer.

Check under device manager what is the brand of your built-in card reader and google the company to see if they have a firmware update or new drivers for the unit.

Too bad, it seems to be generic... "Generic USB Card Reader Driver v2.2e4" eMachines site has a northstar media reader driver maybe I'll try that. I wsould do a search with vendor ID and Product ID but card reader seems to be inactive unless there is a card less than 2 gb installed. I'll also investigate that, after i locate a non sdhc card. No dice with the external usb reader either... vid 058f pid 6335. Found drivers for this guy but no firmware.
Maybe ill drop by an electronics store and see if any card readers indicate they can read sdhc cards. Active Sync xfers are sloooow! WM5storage is slightly faster, but not as quick as a working card reader...

sandisk cruze sd to usb using the sd->microSd conveter
thinkpad t61 with sd->microSd conveter
sandisk 8-1 usb reader sd->microSd conveter
but hp tx1270 had no problems using sd->microSd conveter
got a sandisk micoSD to usb thingy and everybody reads it just fine

I guess i need a new card reader!

My 8 gb micro came with a generic SD card reader and sd adaper, but no dice. My eMachines is kind of an older notebook, so im not surprised that i wouldnt work... I guess i was hoping newer drivers would correct this issue but no cigar. I had a transflash/micro sd reader that came with my DS Modchip but no dice with that either.
i will go to and look for a name brand card reader such as your sandisk adapter. At least with a name brand i will have better support than with my current generic readers.
Any additional info on your sandisk reader?

Pocked up a SanDisk MediaMate SD+ at Staples. The reader works great!

i have a 4gb dane-elec micro sdhc card and it doesnt work on my htc tytn or my pc.
i tried doing the xp hotfix but it wont let me complete because it says i have sp3.it does work however in my nokia n95....i formatted it there many times but it my pc or tytn still wont detect it...
any help please?

Unable to recognize SDHC (Sandisk SDHC 8GB)

Hello everybody, I've just bought my new Galaxy s, so I've put my old sd card into the phone but, surprise, the sd results unreadable and it's impossible to format. On the contrary, if i try to plug the sd card into an usb port of my PC: no problem.
The card was working very well till now on my samsung omnia.
Anybody encountered problem on sd card?
Is there a way to make the card readable again to the galaxy s?

the 16 GB sandisk micro sdhc card i just got in yesterday (and returned) came with a small 66k "media manager" program (full name "sandisk media manager") that one of the steps was for the user to select the actuall make/model of phone you wanted the media to format the card to or for
you might try sandisk's web and see if that program is available for download -
it installed on my computer, so i saved it for the next card, but, in case that helps

I wasn't able to find the Sandisk tool, anyway I installed a software from HP to format the SD Card in FAT 32 filesystem, and .. it worked!
The sofwater is HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (SP27608.exe), maybe it can be useful to others...

Formatting the SDCard from a 7 Trophy

How can I format the SD Card from my old 7 Trophy. Because the damn thing is damaged beyond repair I butchered the thing and want to use the sdcard in my android phone. Can someone explain how I can format the card?
In my pc the card isn't recognized even in the maintenance tools there is nothing.

You need a partioning program. Don't remember the exact name if the program but you can search the hd2 wp7 forum and look for the thread on dual booting android. The programs in there will work.

Partitioning won't work. (The way an HD2 running WP7 uses the SD card is different from how a native WP7 uses the SD card, so the experience on an HD2 does not inform the experience on a native WP7 device.)
Using a Symbian phone is still the only known way at this point.

Symbian is Nokia? I have a E65 but in this it says the card is damaged or something like that (its in german).
Even diskmgmt.msc shows only an empty line without any partitions.

I'm in the same situation and did a pretty thorough research, so here's what I found:
WP7 uses the hardware encryption functionality of SD cards. That's why the memory is not even recognized by Windows, no matter what app you use for that matters. Nokia' Symbian smartphones also implement this functionality so they are able to format the card (but not read its contents since they are password protected)
Don't get misled by people claiming that they have successfully low-level formatted their cards with Panasonic's Sd format app. Those are likely to be users of HD2 devices so those cards didn't come out of an actual WP7 device.
Bottom line: You need a Symbian Nokia Smartphone to format the card. Search this forum for the precise instruction that you need to follow on the Nokia device to be able to format the card.
Some has reported some other devices being able to format the cards, such as photo cameras, but again it's very likely that those cards did not come out of a real WP7 device.
The dilemma is that an 8 gb micro sdhc card may not worth the effort of finding somebody with a Nokia device.

Just a dumb question isn't it the problem that the system the card goes in supports the hardware encryption functionality of SD cards? Wouldnt any older device that didn't support hardware encryption work ? Say a old Moto phone with SD support?
I'm tempted to upgrade mine to 32gb from 16gb just to try this to see if one of the dozen + devices that support SD(with a MicroSD adapter) or MicroSD that I have will do it. Crap, even my Wii has a SD slot.
Maybe this is this wrong disucsion for this but, I am really wondering what is blocking it. If a device does not support hardware encryption, it should just show the drive as a invalid file system and be able to format it.

is this correct, that wp7 can't format and setup a microsd card for itts own use ?

Sure, a WP7 can format it's own memory card, there's no issue there.
The problem starts when you want to reuse the card, hence format it again without the encryption layer.

Again, the encryption we are dealing with is done through hardware, meaning that a WP7 phone has a hardware component in charge of the encryption, so do certain symbian Nokia phones (you can search and find which ones, the Nx line on top of my head). Not every nokia phone with a microsd slot will do the trick.
Bottom line you need a device hardware-capable of dealing with this encryption in order to be able to re-format a WP7 card but this time without any encryption.

WP7 lock cards via internal SD2.0 protection feature (CMD42). It's done inside SD card.
So after removing card from WP7 phone, you need find device which can detect that card is locked and which can apply force erase to it.
Unfortunately, most device can't handle this feature.
WP7 on LEO is using unlocked card to allow use Android / other OS together with WP7.

Hi, I also got your problem and just got my answer by trial and error.
Format won't help since it won't unlock your sd card and won't delete the internal protection. You need to do the following:
1. start linux (install ubuntu besides windows or something)
2. put card in computer
3. unmount sd card with "umount"
4. format sd card with "mke2fs /location-of-sd-card/"
5. go to windows and format as fat32 or just put it in your phone.
6. thank me
Windows or your phone will say it's broken or something and will repair.
The mango security is no more and your sd card is revived.

Hello kind people. Seens i had my Transformer ICS i never bothered to use microSD card but no i travel a lot and watch movies on it. So recently i bought 16gb class 2 microSD card tried to use it in the microSD slot. Yes i formatted it in to Fat32 and it works perfectly well with card reader in any PC, but when i put it in the tablet it recognises that there is a microSD card in but it takes some long time and it does not see anything on the card, i can create folders and copy small files, not cut and past. After i do that i put the card in the PC and there is no any files or folders that i created on the tablet. But if i put it in the dock via SD to microSD adaptor it sees everything that on the card. Can some one suggest any answer to my troubles. Thank you all

** What brand?
** 16 GB with Class 2 can be very slow very often.
** In some cases, windows can do funny things to cards formatted on windows, when used with android. A very good time-tested software for formatting sd cards is from Panasonic here: http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html
Try formatting with this.

Also try to have the Transformer format the card instead of using Windows to format the card. There are probably several little differences in formatting with Windows versus the Android device. For instance a movie that is over 4GB in size or something similar to that may or may not appear.

MicroSD Card Problems

I've seen other threads allude to this, but I've been wondering if anyone else has had any of these problems with microSD cars in the Phab2 Pro and know of any solutions?
Things I've encountered:
No exFAT support, so you need to format larger cards as FAT32 (not really a problem per se, but annoying).
All the Samsung EVO/EVO+ SD cards I've tried in this thing do fine as portable SD cards until it exceeds around 10GB, then a re-boot or re-mount claims the card is corrupted. Mounting the card on my PC/Mac shows no problems.
Adoptable storage works for my large 128GB EVO+ card (which made me not return the phone), but I notice that my 64GB EVO card can't be adopted and the error is a weird toast message:
"java.util.concurrent.TimeoutException: Thread Binder gave up waiting after 180000ms" (something to this effect from my recollection).
I should point out that these SD cards have never had problems on other Android devices I've owned, so it seems very specific to this device. Basically, the only workaround I have right now that works for me is to use adoptable storage and that is adequate for my needs.

The Lenovo Phab2 Pro, by default, reformats newly installed microSD cards to a better file system than FAT32. See post below:

Got my new Samsung 64GB microSD card & installed it in my Phab2 Pro last weekend. First thing, the Phab2 Pro reported that the card was not formatted properly and did I want it reformatted? I did and it did.
Looking now at the newly formatted microSD card with ES File Explorer and with Lenovo's bundled File Manager, I couldn't tell which standard the card was formatted to.
To the point, I plugged the phone into my laptop, navigated to the microSD card in Windows File Explorer and copied a 6GB file to it, no problem. I verified that the copy was successful by disconnecting the phone from the laptop and opening the file in Android.
I don't know which file system the Phab2 Pro uses by default to format microSD cards but I know it ISN'T FAT32. FAT32 supports a maximum file size of 4GB and, since the microSD card supports larger files (after allowing the phone to reformat the card to its default file system), it isn't FAT32.

Any idea what file system Windows thinks it is? I didn't think it was exFAT since a fresh format of exFAT from Windows gets the "not formatted properly" message.
I've since given up on this phone--too many problems for me to tolerate. I really wanted to like it, but alas, when my three year old Z Ultra behaves better, I just can't justify paying this much for it. Maybe I got a lemon.

You have two formatting choices for microSD cards with the Phab2 Pro. You can choose to format the card as "portable storage" or "internal storage".

I just put in a 64GB microSD card and had the phone format it as portable storage, I then ejected it and mounted it in Windows and the Disk Manager tool reports the card as formatted as FAT32 (see attachment).

Installed a SanDisk 256GB card model (SDSQUNI-256G-GN6MA)
Let the phone format the card, choose internal storage, then it asked to move files, pics and apps to the new card, I clicked accept.
It worked! Phone reads the card, so far no issues, see attached pic.

128GB or 256 ?

I have the 690Y and took a chance to see if the 256GB card would work and it does. That's why I listed the model number of the SD card. Even though Lenovo states on their website up to 128GB, it looks like it's​ a hit or miss on which card you use as others have posted.
