6.1... what does it give us? - General Questions and Answers

Ok, I've searched around, so sorry if this has been covered before, what exactly does 6.1 give us over 6?
The only stuff on the internets i have found is relating to Smartphone version not the bigboy Windows Mobile Pro version.
And you cant search for things less than 4chars on here (and most forums, very annoying)
cheers

For enterprise a lot!
You will be able to manage all your WM6 for System Center Mobile Device Manager...

Threaded SMS. Hopefully one that works with MMS without any of the issues of the ripped Palm Threaded one.

What's wrong with PocketCM?

I haven't played with any of the newer versions of pocketCM so I might not be the best to speak to it but from my limited and dated experience.
PocketCM is an add-on viewer of the SMS messages in your regular SMS inbox; it just reads them and groups them together. So you have to always launch PocketCM to read SMS threaded (versus reading it straight in messaging or pocketCM having its own SMS database like Palm). This is an advantage for some and a disadvantage for others.
PocketCM isn't just a threaded SMS client; it's really designed to be a replacement for contacts and such within WM. As such it's a larger program than just an SMS threader. If you don't want to use pocketCM for anything other than threaded SMS it's unnecessarily large and bloated for just that purpose.
Some people don't like the PocketCM interface (myself included on the old version I tried). Palm threaded is much nicer. Hopefully the WM6.1 will be better also.
I also had a lot of issues with PocketCM in terms of multiple SMSs or missing ones; but again that was quite a few versions back so it might be much better.

pardon my ignorance, what is threaded SMS?

Ref Pocket CM:
I have used only the recent versions and i have to say its a great program especially if your using a custom theme. Alot of new features have been added that make it a simple and fast program.
With regard to launching it... now you can set it to launch itself on recieving messages and you can dial / edit / contacts but also you can dial a new number too.
I would recommend it if you want a finger friendly app.

when ever i hear about 6.1 all i ever heard about is threaded SMS, and if thats all thats changed other than little bug fixes (which our chefs have probably over come anyway) IMO theres no point upgrading!

Well if the bug fixes create a more stable/useful/functional base to start with then it just means our cooks can come up with an even better final product.

Well as they've fixed it already, then its already what 6.1 is giving us. Aka its the same thing if you get what im saying?
IMO (and this is based on 6.1 just being bug fixes etc) then its for end users who dont know about XDA-Devs or similar in order to get the bugs fixed.
I hope im wrong, because like everyone i want some more things to play around with but ive just got this gut feeling its not going to be that impressive.

Yea, all i heard about was threaded sms & an updated PIE. that's all i got.

Ive heard that the Smartphone version has a tweaked UI so that its more simplified, but im get to see a single screenshot of 6.1 on a PPC or any news of anything new, obviously other than the bloody threaded sms that ill never use lol

If there is a new IE and Pocket Outlook I'd be more interested.

here's what i got from another thread
Here’s the full run-down of additions that you can expect to see in the WinMo6.1 update (from BGR):
* Copy / Paste
* Domain Enroll in Settings (Enrolling in a domain will connect your device with company resources.)
* New home screen (pan left and right to check out missed calls, notifications like email, sms, etc.)
* Change Master Security Code
* Added text input settings
* Recent Programs when pressing Start menu
* Threaded SMS
* When you compose an email, or SMS, and start typing the name of the contact in the “To:” field, the contact names finally pop up like Windows Mobile Professional!
* Internet Explorer now lets you define a homepage, and also zoom in and out using a nice and clean interface
i've tried the 6.1 rom on a hermes........it does seem a lot faster, although it may be just cause its a clean rom, but the PIE is still crap.......when you zoom out, scrolling is really slow. its a beta rom, hopefully it gets better in the final release.

i want the threaded sms thats all.. if someone could extract it so we could install it on our current roms that be fantastic

iPhone SMS

hey not sure if you've guys have seen what apple have done with their iphone SMS, but i'm in love with that. does anyone know if theres an app that does something similar? i mean right now all my SMS's are just randomly organized by date, would love something where your given a 'instant messenger' kind of approach.
You're a senior member, you should know to search. There is a threaded sms cab here that works - I prefer to use the native Inbox application and will wait until 6.1 cooked which has threaded capabilities.
http://discussion.wmexperts.com/showthread.php?t=139379 has picture, step-by-step guide on how to get it working, I would recommend MOVING poutlook instead of deleting it.
is windows 6.1 release date still in april? was hoping they'd release something soon.

i tried it, didnt' work for me....
when i started this thread i was hoping to find something that will organise the SMS in this fashion:
http://www.iphon.fr/public/periode2/iphone-sms.jpg
does anyone actually know if there is an app out there that does this?
I have used it with the Vox, it's not very stable and key presses do not match up properly, thus I don't use it.
There is no application that will do what you have posted in your screen shot. Wait until 6.1 is released out and perhaps it can be pulled out of the ROM and retro fitted.
ya thats what i'm hoping for. is the release date for 6.1 still april? or have they announced an earlier date?
There is an application and is called Extreme Text here is the link
"Extreme Text is the premier Threaded SMS Texting application. It allows you to view all of your Texts as separate conversations for each contact you SMS, much like an Instant Message Conversation. It also adds great features including emoticons, following links in the text, User Defined Text Support, Photo Contact Support, and more..."

ya thats what i'm looking for, but 15 bucks is a hefty price for a small app like that. I just read that WM6.1 will incoporate the iphone sms bubble 'chat' layout, just wondering when the release date for an official release is expected
The PPC guys have already began cooking 6.1 rom from a leaked Kaiser upgrade. We just have to wait for a smartphone upgrade and then we should be able to adapt it to the Vox

WM 6.1 and another ROM

Hi there - is it possible to implement a WM 6.1 version over an existing ROM version ?
or in other words - I`m using Quentin`s qmobile 1.2 but wanna have the wm 6.1 on the kaiser ...
Thanks
Myrin
This has been asked before. It's a definite no. Features, only thing different is sms threading, which you can add palm threaded sms to your rom. Some other minor options, but nothing too big.
The SMS from 6.1 is by far much better than Palm Threaded SMS
Thomassster I `m not quite shure if understand what you are saying - Do I have to wait for Quentins version of WM 6.1 ?
Ignore the first response - I guess he didnt understand the question.
If you have hardspl'd your device, then you can flash any rom you like.
But if going to a 6.1 rom, you will need to also flash a 6.1 compatible radio rom as well.

MS Threaded SMS:
-You can't see the time of messages older then 1 day anymore.
-You can't see which delivery report is for which message (if you send 3 messages to 1 number and the second wouldn't be delivered, you couldn't check that.)
-You can't disable the threaded sms function.
Palm Threaded SMS:
-If you want to see older messages in a thread, the app opens the whole conversation and with a several thousends of messages it kind of gets stuck.
-The sms file which contains the messages gets HUGE. With 5000msg the file is 20MB. (the main reasion I wan't to dump this app)
The MS app is more stable and faster, but it just isn't finished yet. You can't call it much better then the Palm threaded sms, cause it misses core functions.

MS threaded:
-Slower then Palm dunno why you think MS is faster
-Ugly font.. cant resize unless you have email configured
+pictures are full screen
+audio only clips (voicemails)
-log style
+today plugin works pretty well
-no pictures of contacts for new txt
Palm threaded:
+Faster then MS by far.
-MMS wont work on newer htc devices.. basically anything after the tytn-orginal(att 8525)
+better face icons
+better logging
+picture of contact when getting new txt
-log size
-today plugin sometimes funky
-------
bottom like palm has better features but until someone can make threaded sms+mms work in it ill have to stick to the MS threaded
unwired4 - so I can`t just hardspld, flash a new radio rom and then take Quentins Rom ???
Is that possible ?
Or must the ROM be a "WM 6.1 ROM" ?
Thanks

I would use Palm's but I just can't stand not having MMS not working. A couple of weeks ago I was able to get the MMS fixed but it only works with the older ArcSoft MMS. I can give you steps and the package that you need to get it work. If I can find it again.

NO! You can not flash 2 roms... Your rom holds 1 rom
Wait for Quentins WM6.1 rom or flash someone elses WM6.1 rom.

When your log file is small, Palm is faster yes. But if you have a huge logfile with thousends of messages, MS is way faster for sure, it just doesn't get slower, while Palm's app is getting slower with each byte.

SMS/MMS Threading

Dear All,
I searched for this, but couldn't find any reference to this particular issue. I tried all the latest 6.1 ROMs and it looks like a WM thing.
All ROMs, have this new "FEATURE" which let's you view the SMS as a thread of messages instead of one at a time.
This is great, the only drawback is, that I can no longer move threads or indvidual SMSs to different folders; even the option to manage folders is dimmed (also the move option).
The only work-around that I have found, is to delete the message, go to the trash, and move it from there. However, there is still no way to create a new folder.
Any Ideas/Suggestions/Solutions for this issue ?
I too miss the split SMS/MMS. I wonder if it is possible for our favorite chef to put ArcSoft MMS 4.2.8.1 in his latest ROM and have it work properly?
This would make it possible to run Vito SMS-Chat and receive MMS properly. If Dutty's latest did run so damn good I would revert back for this reason alone.
I remember communicating with a very talented individual named Shogunmark. I'm SURE that this individual could separate the SMS and MMS. I don't think it was via XDA though. Seems I met him through another site.
Check out this thread. Simple registry hack to disable threaded SMS in WM 6.1.
I've done a quick search that didn't really turn up any results, so I wonder if this is even possible. Is there a cab file available that will replace the regular sms with the wm6.1 sms on a wm6 device?

In order to run Threaded SMS on WM6, you need to install a 3rd party program such as PalmSMS.

WM6 Smartphone or Dumbphone?

I previousely had a Nokia E50, that is not considered "Enterprise" enough by WM6 users, But it had some basic features missing in WM6 Smartphone, does any one know how to overcome them:
1. I can not only Send mails, its always send & Recieve.
2. I can not send mails to a group of mail ids, I have to select contacts individually.
3. I Can not assign a assign a specific ringtone to a group of contacts.
Is Microsoft Stupid or What? Or do they keep everything for PPC version (I dont know since I do not have one)? Or do they think that they are giving the smartphone edition as a obligation, a social service of sorts?
1. Why do you only want to send mails and not receive. Its not possible as of now.
2. Use the software EssentialContax Pro that can send mails to a group.
3. You can assign ringtones to individual users. To do it for a group try using photo contacts pro. It has many additional features too.
Both features might be supported by one of these softwares, so check on the developers website for that
Re: Softwares
Thanks for the infor, but my point is, when you are buyig an enterprise device, these features should be inbuilt. Why do I have to pay extra for getting some basic features (the price of HTC S710 is double that of Nok e50)?
I have checked flexmail, but its pretty expensive! (in Indian Context).
Re: Why I just want to send mails: GPRS connectivity in India is exceptionally slow, so If I have to urgently send a mail, I wont have to wait for the downloading of all the mails thats in my inbox!
in the advanced settings of a mailaccount you can choose to send/receive or not when you click send.
i don't know if it is only a wm6.1 option, but on mine you can choose that!

Why? Because you feel those features are 'basic'?
I've looked at Nokia E devices, but they lack certain functions which I feel are essential. Main problem for me is that Nokia is not able to sync all calendar / contact information with Exchange. Does that make the E-series 'dumbphones' ? No. It only means that I am not satisfied with the functionality I get in *my* situation.

Correct me if I am wrong, but dont you think there are a lot more people who prefer sending sms or mails to a group of people than those who has an exchange server in office for syncing contacts etc?
Thats how I went about getting the S710... defined some "must haves"
1. MUST sync with outlook (exchange) Calender, mails, contacts.
2. MUST have a normal keyboard somewhere
3. Must look pretty much like a normal phone (size/dimensions)
Now that I have my s710 some new demands are added:
MUST run photocontacts pro (the profiling is simply awesome)
MUST be able to easily have more functionality installed (WM)
Thats about it

Finger friendly email

Hello,
I was wondering if there's a finger friendly alternative to the Windows Mail application that is available for the Sprint Touch (Vogue). I would like to scroll through the message without using the scroll-bar, just like browsing web pages on Opera.
Thanks
threaded messaging works that way.. and if you have a good ROM flashed on your vogue, you can probably flow your messages even thru the regular outlook. if you're talking about SMS messages.. you can try using VITO SMSChat if the regular threaded messaging doesn't suit your needs.

I have the NFSFAN ROM in my vogue but I don't see my messages flowing in the regular outlook. I can go back and forth b/w different messages in outlook by finger gliding left and right.
Basically, while I'm reading the email message(not SMS) I'd like to be able to scroll up and down with finger flicker and not by dragging the scroll bar.
Strange, you should have biotouch working...
is it a WM6.1 rom?
nir36,
appreciate your responses. I have the latest NFSFAN rom for WM 6.1. The problem with reading e-mail in mobile outlook is if I try to scroll up or down by gliding my finger in the middle of the screen, I end up selecting lines of the message instead of scrolling.
Also, a very light finger flick causes all the lines of the message to go by really quick and all I see are the last few lines of the message. I want it to behave exactly like Opera where I can go up or down and left or right by simple finger glides.
Thanks once again.
If Vito-SMS chat doesn't work this way (no idea how the latest version is set).. I believe i can't help but to tell you to flash a WM6.5 ROM.. since the scrolling there is somewhat different.
