Unable to Update Tilt - Unknown USB device - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

I am using a OCT 07 version of Dutty's update and its been working well.
Don't use activesync except for copying apps over to phone.
Noticed that I have lost the ability to use activesync. My phone is longer recogized by 3 laptops and one desktop.
When I had this problem with my 8125 I would go to settings, connections, "USB to PC" and disable the check box to "Enable advanced network functionality" and my phone would show up again. Tried it with my Tilt and it didn't change anything.
Thinking I am missing something here. While I wasn't using Activesync to sync up my contacts and rather just to move programs to my micro SD card. Without Activesync I cannot update my ROM (its an addiction). I do not believe its an issue on the PC but rather with the Tilt at this time.
I have hard reset a couple of times and still having this problem. I use Sprite backup and am able to restore my phone after the hard reset.
Just to check went to boot loader mode to check and see my hardspl update is still there. It is there. When I plug in my usb cable - see the switch from serial to USB but RUU doesn't communicate with mobile phone.
Any suggestions?

Have you deleted the device in the active sync and rebooted the computer and see if it recognizes it then?

THis happens to me sometimes.
Try using a different USB cable. For some reason some cables (my docking station for instance) causes this problem!

So far have tried -
Removing partnership in activesync - on two PC's - still not working
Removing and updating activesync - on two PCs - still not working
I don't believe its an activesync problem but rather a phone problem.
Started up my "old" Cingular 8125 and tried it with docking station and two mini usb cables and it is recognized by all.
Looking at the mini usb port on the 8125 it appears to be intact but there is a small crack on one side of it - but it still works fine.
It could be a micro-usb problem. Not sure. Audio works, it appears to be charging ok.
I do use a cradle at home, office and each car. I used a magnifying glass/lamp combo to look better and it appears that all the pins are straight.
Never having looked though I am not sure what I am looking for.
Tried another cable - still same - "USB device not recognized"

Mini USB port version
I have Old model - with visible "holes" in the plug.
The New model doesn't have visible holes.
Is there a tool of sorts which shows pin connectivity on the PC side or HTC side?

Cable
Tried my cable (mini USB to standard USB) in the office today and it worked! The two at home and three computers there have historically worked since I got the ATT Tilt. Odd?
Further testing in the offices with three other cables didn't work. Plugging the one that worked into my docking station also did not work. Tested the "HTC" combo mini USB and Audio adapter didn't work.
Noticed the pins are more pronounced on the one cable that work.
So will be taking my cable home to try there with the "other" computers.
This is leaving me to think that its definitely a problem with the pins on the mini USP connector on the HTC Kaiser/Tilt. I can't see any bent but may only "flattened" a bit.
I did find a place which will service device installing a new mini USB plug for $60 including shipping. Will post link.

^^ Did you ever get the link. I think I have the same problem.

USB Activesync cable, not detecting phone but charging...

Besides my cradle, I have an activesync cable (USB on one end & connector for my XDA II unit on the other end). I've been using it for quite sometime now, until one day it stopped detecting my phone, I can no longer synchronize on my unit...but the thing is, it can still charge my XDA II.
I can activesync with my cradle...so does this mean that my activesync cable is the one defective? What are the possible solution, Im looking for a diagram for this interface, there must be a loose connection on my cable.

What OS are you using?
If WM5 - there are several Threads about XDAII with WM5 having problems to sync via USB (I have this (unsolved) problem, too).
(Have a lokk at www.buzzdev.net, too)
So: no solution, but at leat an assurance that there is no hardware problem.

I turn of firewall of pc windows xp.
I experience the same problem too.
Try re-installing the ActiveSync. This worked for me.
I installed the WM 6.1 about one month ago and everything was fine until recently. Has anyone been able to find a solution for this? mine started doing this about three days ago. I was syncing fine just last week!!
(edited, I´ll move it to a proper place)
Have you tried disabling the advanced network functionality option?
I'm having the same problems too.
It all worked fine. 1 day it stopped working. I've removed the partnerships and uninstalled ActiveSync, installed again, reboot both devices. Started working.
Now it stopped working again!
I've got a HTC TyTN
Help...!
I've the exact same problem with me Raphael with RomEOS WM6.1. It won't work on Vista or XP, tried all the standard stuff and tried it on a fresh computer with Vista. Seems to be a WM6.1 or ROM issue.
I'm looking for instalation files for ActiveSync on WM6.1, but can't find any.
Where we can find ActiveSync ROM cab file so that we can install on Mobile again.
Since ActiveSync on mobile is not working as I have to 2 phones
1) HTC Tytn II (Not Working)
2) O2 Atom ( Working )
with same usb cable and same desktop or laptop.
can anyone help where we can get a activeSync Installer for phone.
I have the same problem, I am running WM5 on an Eten Om600+ and Vista no my laptop.
the phone charges, but there is not communication between computer and phone. all was fine, till one day... no sync no more.
Any suggestions?

where do i find that?
ok Im having the same problem here with my Titan.. how did you all get it to work again?
i got a SPV M1000. one cradle and one USB cable. I prefer using USB cable to cradle. I got same problem as you with my USB cable. USB cable can charge but can not synch. I dismantled my USB cable and found out that. one data tag(pin) was loose. and people should know that. USB cable have 22 tags(pins): 2,5,16,17,18 are connect to (-) negative and 13,20,21,22 (+) positive. the tag number 14 and 15 is the date line. If one of 14 or 15 tag is loosen(mean it donot touch to your ppc when you plug the cable in) then your ppc only can charge and cannot synch. So, I pushed the tag 14th on my cable back, seal with some superglue. after that, my usb cable work again until now.
by the way, i disconnected the pin number 20,21,22 from (+) positive. disconnect one data pin ( 14 or 15). after that, my USB cable can be used to charge my PPC through PC or the any chargers with voltage >5V. is that usefull huh?. and when i want to Synch, i reconect that pins again. for more convenient, i do it with a Switch with 2 poles.

PC does not recognise TILT anymore via USB

Interesting little problem I discovered when trying to reflash with Dutty's latest ROM.
- I connect via USB and I do not get the standard USB 'ding' noise when I plug in.
- I checked system hardware properties, all of my USB drivers are working and no yellow flags.
- Active SYNC is configured just as it was when I first synced my phone a month ago to my PC
- I hard reset my tilt a few times with no solution.
I tried a few different computers and they all displayed the above problem.
The TILT charges fine when connected to my PC so I know its not a hardware issue...I did notice that the active sync icon under my connection manager was constantly grayed out and even after enabling it remained gray, its been a while since i synced with my PC and I do not remember if it only turns green only in the process of syncing or not...
Im pretty stumped on this one any ideas?
Settings >>> Connections >>> USB to PC >>> Deselect check box for Enable advanced network functionality
This sounds strange, but do you have multiple network cards in your computer? If I disable my primary network connection and enable the dirty connection my tilt wont connect to ActiveSync and the icon goes gray. As soon as I switch back it works again. It had me stumped for the longest time.
Could be related, maybe not.
check your Firewall Settings.. (if you have one). If you do, then i recommend that you delete the entry for activeysync, rapimgr.exe and add the rule.. i get this once in a while
man... turned out to be the USB port on the phone, everything looks normal but upon further inspection it appeared that the 3rd pin was slightly bent towards the back of the connector. It was a major pain in the butt gently bending it back without damaging the connector... what a headache!!
How did it get bent in the first place??? Thats the question
Many thanks for the tip. I had the same problem with my TyTN (charged over cable, synced only when using a 3rd party cradle) even though I took pretty good care of it. It was bent in the same direction as the other similar threads suggest, but the only thing that helped me was bending backwards the 3rd pin. It's a shame that I damaged the connector in process, but that's better than not being able to properly sync the bloody expensive device that already cant play video and lags in camera/menus
I always thought iPaq's were badly engineered with 2210's falling apart but is seems that HTC outperformed them here. At least HP didnt try to save a few cents on the sync/charge port. Way to go HTC.

Possible Stupid Question. Lost USB connectivity.

Hi folks.
My Tornado (imate sp5) was flashed from factory WM5 to WM6 with VJ Grace 3.3, it worked just fine. One day I lost conenctivity via activesync over the usb cable. BT activesync still works fine. I had not done anything to the connecter port other than using USB cable to activesync occasionally, and to use the wall charger.
After 2 months of going like this, I decided to upgrade to a newer Nitrogen ROM, and I enter the bootloader mode by pressig the camera button and plugging in the usb cable. The three color screen comes just fine.
Now, when I attach the USB cable, I do not see the small writing "USB" at the lower left hand corner.
Also I cannot connect it with Terraterm pro or the RUU utility, says phone is not connected via the USB.
But my usb cable still charges the phone when connected to the PC, even though activesync doesnt do anything.
Is there anything I can do?
Can it be a hardware error? Or a registry change I might have done using smarttweaks (enable/disable charging over usb-- I dont remember). If so can it be restored or undone?
I tried hard resets (clear storage and leftsoftkey/rightsoftkey/powerbutton combinations), but still it doesnt recognise activesync.
My other windows mobile devices get connected to same pc activesync with no problem, using the same data cable. Heck I even repaired by reflashing a friend's Wizard using the same pc and cable last week.
Is it possible that my tornado's usb connector port might have gone poof (it still charges the phone), and is there any remedy to that?
Thanks for reading, and please help..
Regards,
Steve
I've got the same problem. I can't connect via AS:/
I had a similar problem once in a while when I upgraded my phone to WM6; it seemed almost random. One day, the phone wouldn't switch out of Vibrate mode, and ActiveSync wouldn't synch with the phone. The first time it happened, I had VJGrace's 3.3, and 3.4 had just come out, so I went ahead and flashed it. I didn't format binfs or anything (which, in my experience isn't necessary for a functioning OS flash, just a clean one) but it flashed a fresh WM6 on, and the problem went away.
Then, a couple weeks later, I had the same problem again. It was right around the time that VJ's 3.7 came out, so I flashed that (again without format binfs) and it fixed the problem again.
Then, a couple weeks later, I had the same problem yet again. This time, Nitro's Platinum Edition had just come out, so I flashed it. Haven't had the problem again.
Interesting note - since I got my Tornado, my first Smartphone, I have only ever done the format binfs once - the first time I flashed WM6. Haven't done it since. It's my opinion that format binfs gives you a CLEAN install of WinMobile, but is not strictly necessary.
So, to summarize: try direct-flashing a new WM6 install. Just plug in the USB cable - ignore ActiveSync when it fails to synchronize - and run the updater program. It'll take care of the rest, even if AS doesn't synch.
djsleepwalker:
If you lost USB connectivity, how did you flash your phone?
Should I read between the lines that the bootloader connected properly and that it was a WM6 driver problem?

To be totally honest, I'm not 100% certain. See, ActiveSync wouldn't SYNCH with the phone, but I could still "Explore" the phone. WM6 was active and working, and charged via USB cable, it just wouldn't synch.
So, after I connected the USB cable and ActiveSync popped up a message that said it couldn't synchronize with the phone, I just started up the ROMUpdateUtility program. It rebooted the phone into the bootloader for me.
I honestly never tried to start it back up in bootloader mode. The only reason I decided to just flash a new ROM was because I had already downloaded the ROM, but where I was at the time, I had no internet access (and therefore couldn't remember the steps before flashing the new ROM.) A friend of mine who has a Wizard (and who, I think, might be a member of this forum) suggested that I didn't *have* to format binfs to put an updated ROM on the phone, so I said screw it. I needed it out of Vibrate mode (my phone is my second alarm - my second line of defense against oversleeping) so I flashed the new ROM.
ninja edit: If ccpraveen is getting *nothing* when he connects the USB, then my suggestion probably won't help. But if Windows recognizes something being connected, and he can *explore* the phone, but ActiveSync just won't synchronize, then he's probably having the same problem I was. I can't tell for sure from reading his post.
Sweet...
Thanks for the comments, its all dejavu again
Djsleepwalker's comments did make me wonder, hey this is exactly my problem, except that mine doesnt connect in any manner.
Lots of similarities, problems started with VJ 3.3, on and off for a while with USB, then totally lost connection.
I am not concerned with formatting BINFS now, I somehow want to get the phone recognized.
Exitao has actually asked a VERY VALID query. It is indeed impossible to flash a phone without any USB connectivity (unless via an SD image or something). Djsleepwalker's issue was minimal, only that the PC was not showing up the activesync as connected, but indeed there WAS a connection, he could explore the phone from the pc etc, and I bet if he did go into the 3 color screen, he would have seen the "USB" on the left lower portion.
So, mine is just that. No connectivity. Nada. PC just sits dumb. Phone just gets charged, and finally into the fully charged green LED. Thats it.
Could there be something in VJ's ROM that is doing this?
I wonder, because a Wizard I once tried to repair would not let me flash upgrade either. I had to go back to a basic BUTTON ROM to get the upgrades running properly again. But there atleast I had connectivity then.
After I read DJ's comments, I tried running the RUU straight, without getting into the bootloader (for a change). Again its the same error 260. Here is a screenshot.
Anybody?

Steve
It seems, from the description, that the activesync profile became corrupt.
Deleting any device profiles from Activesync and connecting the phone as a new device might also solve the problem. However, it might be active synch on the phone that is the problem...
Anyone unsure how serious their problem is should just turn off the USB connect in activesync, start the phone into boot loader and do an "info 2" with terraterm pro.
If terraterm discovers the device, the USB is not the problem. It's activesynch.
Terraterm pro would not connect either.
I started the phone into bootloader by plugging in the usb while keeping the camera button pressed. Started the terraterm pro, selected Serial > USB, clicked Ok, Terraterm says ERROR, Cannot Open.
One minor thing, what do ppl normally see in their bootscreens? I see these lines, Tornado IPL 2.00 Tornado SPL 2.00.0000 and another line Tornado IU.
I dont remember seeing this third line saying Tornado IU before. Is it normal? It is in the middle zone( green coloured zone).
I believe my usb connector port might have a physical error. What else it could be. PC just will not detect ANY sort of USB connection.
Thanks again Exitao, I am stumped.
Regards
Steve
Have you tried any other USB ports on your computer? I know it's a longshot, but on my desktop PC one of the onboard USB ports just doesn't function at all. The other three do.
ninja edit: Maybe try it on another computer, too?
I tried on all four USB ports of my laptop, as well as on another Desktop PC I have.
Even without activesync installed, plugging in this should bring out a DING, saying something has been connected to the PC USB. (and asking for drivers, if Activesync was not installed. Here nothing happens, no DING). Remember, the same USB port is being used to sync my Wizard, Blackjack 2 and my old Himalaya even now.
Another possible reason, I was using a dumb chinese charger for charging the phone, after I lost the original one. Could that might have fried the usb pins?

Please excuse me if I'm stating the obvious, or if I'm a bit off, as I don't haven't used my Tornado in a bit (upgraded to Touch Cruise), but in the last ROM I used, NitroGen's latest WM6 version, there was an option in settings to disable usb connectivity and only allow USB charging. Perhaps VJ's ROM has the same option and you activated it. Have you already checked this?
Did you remeber to uncheck "Alllow USB connections" in activesync before you connected the boot-loaded phone?
This may be a hardware problem. Is it possible to use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust or debris from the USB socket on the phone?
Do you have WMStorage on your phone? If not, can you load it onto your storage card and install/run the app and see if the PC will recognise your device as a USB mass storage device?
I guess you also want to check the Device Manager in Windows and check for any exclamaition marks (!) or "bangs." Both with the phone disconnected and connected, and maybe even with wmstorage enabled. If it does show your phone in the device manager, delete or remove the device in the manager and reboot.
(To get to device manager, you can right click on "my computer" and select "properties", or press the Windows key and the Pause/Break key, or go to the control panel applet.)
BTW: is this XP?
If you are using Vista, try the following:
Step 1: Press Start
Step 2: Select settings
Step 3: Select (6) Connections
Step 4: Select (0) More
Step 5: Select (1) USB to PC
Changing the type of USB connection your device uses can help with problems
connecting ActiveSync.
Step 6: Disable the option - Enable advanced network functionality
Step 7: Press done 3 times
Step 8: Return to main screen.
Step 9: Uninstall unrecognized USB device in device manager (on PC)
Step 10: reboot Phone and reconnect

If XP, keep going...
You've stated that the PC is recognising your other devices. Isn't there a limit to the number of windows mobile devices you can sync or associate with one installation of activesync? Can you delete a device and try again?
Is USB charging enabled or disabled in your phone? Try toggling the setting to opposite whatever it is.
If you are using a firewall app, add these programs to your firewall's exemptions:
# Wcesmgr.exe
# Wcescomm.exe
# Rapimgr.exe
Or simply disable any firewalls, network traffic optimisers or possibly antivirus (some have network protections) app to test if that has an effect.
Ok guys..
I will try doing all these, step by step and lets see
And accept my sincere gratitude from my heart for detailing all these info for me, I am soo deeply moved

No need for thanx. If I helped, just give Nitro a donation on my behalf.
Well guys, with deep regret, I must say, even after trying all that, the phone stays put. PC wont recognise it, neither as a phone nor as a mass storage device. The connector port must have gone kaput.
I kinda feel stupid, u know, with all the tweaks and hacks out there, what use it is, if the dumb thing wont be recognised? Hmm.. So much for the tornado, now stuck at VJ 3.3 (unless someone find a way to flash via an SD image or something).
Well, thanks guys, your support did make me feel better, in the WM world, all is not lost, as long as there are good souls like you, willing to help, live and let live.
Regards
Steve.
PS: If the phone was not recognised in the bootloader mode, (ie even before the operating system has kicked in), I guess there should not be any difference if activesync was installed or not; and if or not mass storage option is enabled or not, right? Well, correct me if I am wrong, I think so. Could be wrong.
This is probably a useless comment, but have you tried using bluetooth instead of usb to connect to your computer?
Have u tried to delete the network card from XP device manager ?
U can also disable advanced network functionnality from your smartphone in "settings" -> "connections" -> "USB to PC"
Good luck

That is really strange. Have you tried looking at the setting in: Start - Settings - Connections tab - USB to PC?
Yeah, its all normal. I have it set to ActiveSync(Synce withOutlook)
I have Enable advanced Network checked(even unchecked it doesn't work)
and I have it to ask me about connection type when connected. The connection type never pops up when I plug in though.
Solved
The two USB cables I was using were broken or something, because now with a third USB cable I tried it works fine.
might be too simplistic, but i've made a similar mistake before...
are you checking the screen that appears on your fuze when you connect the usb cable? is the 'use as modem' option checked by accident?
EDIT: nevermind, didn't read your entire last post.
The weird part is that the USB cable that came with the Fuze no longer works. Maybe its the ROM I'm running?
Had the same problem. The fix for me was to open Active Sync on the phone and manually click sync. After that, all was good.

Please Help! USB sync not working

New user here at XDA-Developers and looking forward to enhancing my Touch Pro (Sprint) experience.
I have a frustrating issue! I am unable to sync my Touch Pro with my computer
Before you think "Oh boy, another problem this person can fix with common sense or a search" - I'll tell you I tried everything and searched everywhere! When connected via USB, the device is getting a charge (Plugged-in icon plus white charging light flashing on center button) but my computer does not have that USB connected sound that you get when a USB device is plugged in. Nothing shows in device manager and nothing is recognized in WMDC either.
Here's what I have done so far:
* Uninstalled WMDC and reinstalled from the Microsoft website
* Soft-reset my phone (multiple times)
* Rebooted the computer (multiple times)
* Unchecked 'Enable advanced network functionality' in the USB to PC section. Note: 'ActiveSync' is checked. I did toggle between that and 'Disc Drive'
* On my phone, I unchecked and rechecked the 'Synchronize all PCs using this connection' under ActiveSync>Connections... (USB Selected of course)
* Removed the partnership from both my computer and the phone
* Attempted to connect via 'Internet Sharing' on the phone using USB. Received error 67 and then I rebooted the phone.
* The phone does connect to my friend's laptop via Bluetooth - so Bluetooth sync appears to be working.
* I have NOT done a hard reset. I am reluctant to do this since i can't sync to back up my data (I do not have Bluetooth-equipped computers)
* I do have an HTC Mogul and it DID CONNECT using the same USB port and USB cable.
* The phone is not recognized on two other machines I connected it to.
Due to the last two items, it has to an issue with the phone and not the cable or computer.
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (We have a MSDN subscription) but I had this issue before upgrading from Vista Ultimate 64-bit OS. Note: Windows 7 does appear to use the same WMDC as Vista (6.1.6965)
Please help! Thank you.
Update: I did a hard reset and it still did not connect. Sprint ended up replacing the device under an extended warranty for defective USB data connection.
Ok, on my friens phone it was a broken Phone USB port. Same behavior as ur phone.
For the hardreset, get yourself pimbackup(contacts and appointments) or sbp backup (if all has incl software has to be saved) and save all ur data on the flash card. Then try hardreset.
Right, it smells like the USB port in your phone might be defective when you don't get the USB recognized sound on your PC. Take it back to Sprint.
Regards,
Carty..
Thanks for the advice. I am really hoping that it's not a defective USB port since I'm just out of warranty (I do have insurance though). It looks like my only option now may be the hard reset. Since I can backup on my friends's PC all my ActiveSync items (calendar, contacts, etc), I may not need SPB or pimbackup. I need to back up my texts and settings though.. I hear Sprite Backup is good for this.
What was your outcome because I have the same problem.......
If you do alot of searching here, ppcgeeks and howardsforum...alot of the usb is malfunctioning on the TP. Mine just stopped working one day. That was a month ago. And i tried all the "fixes" nothing worked.
*uncheck advanced start/setting/connections/usb to pc uncheck advance network
*Start/program/internet sharing: pc connection USB and connect
*open it up and check if anything is unplugged
*clean the usb port with qtip
*try different OEM 11pin data cables
*uninstall/install WMDC, yep i have win7- which worked great at one point
*last but not least...hard reset....
Only the usb connection doesn't work. It charges via usb. Video out works. And headset works. Sync with xp a no go.
My pc (win7), work pc (xp), home pc (xp) and umpc (vista)- it wil not recognize....
So I use a micro sd card reader to install apps (cabs) and pics to my pc/ppc.
And also use this useful app via wifi too, WIFI Remote Access 1.0 Beta 5 released
it is free since it is in beta...but very useful...

it is free since it is in beta...but very useful...

I am in the same boat as you.....I have tried multiple computers, hard-resets, flashed from SD card a few times but suddenly it will not work anymore. This is ridiculous. I am pursuing a new, different phone since I cannot sync it anymore. I shouldn't have to take the card out, put it in a reader and do things like that. I have spent hours and hours on a fix but nothing has worked. I am at a loss....
