Well Tomorrow will mark one week with the fuze and I'm not really sure if I'm as thrilled with it as I should be for the 300 bones.
I was lucky enough to have a Real HTC touch pro before my fuze which I sold when I found out it would not do 3g. Over all I was happy with it. I paid 500 for it and didnt really feel bad about it. Everything just seemed to work. The light sensor the g sensor all worked on cue. The menus were snappy and even the gps worked flawlessly. The reception didnt just randomly go out.
This is what I expected from the fuze and its been a major let down. My sister was supose to get one with me the same day and opted for the iphone and after the week with the fuze I'm half tempted to go get an iphone.
Has any one else had the same post touch pro experiance with their fuze? Should I wait a week or two and take it bak for a diffrent one and see if a later build helps?
I hate to say this but I'm really liking the iphone it just works. If I didnt travel overseas so much I would prob just go get one tmrw but I hate the idea of being locked down to the damn att sim when I'm outside the US.
Thoughts?
What problems are you having? Mine is working great! Much snappier than my Tilt!
Yeah, after flashing I have no issues that are bugging me in any way. Battery seems to be doing pretty good and all around has been very stable.
no regrets with my fuze either. there are some minor issues, but nothing that can sway me to iphone. I just love the ability to do all kinds of things on the fuze that u can't do on iphone
and yeah...what problem are you referring to!? flash the rom if you're referring to the AT&T ROM...that thing is filled with junk and makes the phone run way too slow. I flashed with ROMeOS2 1.40. Not perfect, but damned close to it. Should give it a try when you get a chance!
And fortunately, battery life is good on my fuze. I'm definitely squeezing more juice out of it than my friend's iphone can. Not to mention i'm going to be getting a spare battery soon~
Well, you can unlock the iPhone so that you're not tied to an ATT sim I just unlocked, jailbroke and fake activated one for my brother in law to use with T-Mobile and he is loving it.
That said, the first thing I will do with my Fuze when it arrives is to get rid of the bloated ATT ROM it comes with. That always makes a world of difference. Don't go iPhone until you try that
I've had mine since Friday. I used the stock ATT ROM for about a day, then I flashed to NotATreoFan's ROM, which is basically the stock ROM with all the junk removed.
I upgraded from the Tilt, and so far this thing is MUCH snappier than the Tilt, much lighter and a little smaller (although still thick).
The only thing flaky for me so far is the GPS. It just takes a long time to get a lock (although I've been trying indoors and not outside). I haven't driven with it to test the lag issue that people are talking about. My Tilt would pickup a lock in my living room within 30 seconds most of the time, always under a minute. The Fuze seems to take 2-5 minutes. I'm not sure if its GPS antenna just isn't as strong for indoor use or what.
I flashed to the Blackstone radio today and so far my reception seems to be 1-2 bars better than the stock radio, but it hasn't helped GPS any.
I've only had my Fuze since Friday (when it was released down here) and my only major gripe is the left/right Dpad buttons. I just end up avoiding them alltogether.

The fuze , ahh how we all wanted it badly and waited month by month for its epic release. I, for one, am underwhelmed by the fuze, though not by comparison to any other phone.
It just seems that the phone is capable of so much, but theres not much to do on the device. Like i get bored with the phone it seems. I am seriously contemplating returning the device this week, and just returning to my nokia e71, which is a superb phone.
Just my two cents guys.
thanks
ak88
My two cents:
Love the phone.
Only bad part:
Finger print magnet
Slides other way to tilt =/ I got used to it though
Major gripe!:
Fking! enter is too big! and backspace is too small! ugh. I use on-screen keyboard mostly though since the vga resolution is much more responsive. Or it's just a mental thing.
Allright one issue is the gps is flaky... but everyone seems to be having some kind of issue with the gps. Locking on is a bit hit or miss and when I do get a lock my speed just goes to 0 randomly in igo8 then back up to the speed then 0. My Touch pro did none of this.
Second issue is it just randomly looses reception and will take a min or 2 to regain it. its almost like it switches into flight mode then out randomly.
For some reason I get alot of "message failed to send would you like to resend" happend four times yesterday and I had recetion the entire time.
As far as the bloat goes Im currently running it bloat free. I did the reset after intial setup to bypass the AT&T crap load, then ran the milan file and the security file. What is the diffrence with this to flashing the rom?
I agree with ak88 the phone is seems like the phone could be so capable alot of cool stuff but it was just hurried out or something. Maybe it would be better to just take it back and pick it back up in a few months when all you wizards of roms fix the damn thing.
I just wish my 8525s gps was built in :-( Id be on my way back to at&t right now and get my money back. Maybe I will super glue my gps to the back of it
Love my Fuze and all the baggage it brings.
Sorry to tell you but no phone with all these capablities will just work.
My uncle pulled out the Sprint touch pro and showed it to me yesterday. He was mad exited.
This the movement my man.
get under the HTC umbrella or get rained on

I dont really agree with that. There are other phones on the market with the same specs that do just work.
Don't get me wrong Im all about HTC my 8525 is great. I guess it will just take a bit to get the bugs worked out.
Worth it! The only problem I have is the battery. It won't even last 12 hours!
I am really think it is my battery. I will try to get a new battery from the manufacturer since the stores don't have the batteries yet, at least here in NY.
I love the phone so far.
I hate to say it but I haven't seen one device in the last 5 years (which does more than just answer calls and send texts) that just works right out of the box with no modifications or settings change. I haven't exactly tried all of them either.
The more functionality you add the more issues you introduce, plain and simple. Look at the iphone...they locked most of the functionality from the users but also reduced a lot of bugs. Once the app store came into play look at how many more firmware updates they have had to fix issues yet still lack basic functionality.
The G1? Major security flaws right out of the gate and had to update twice now I think if I remember right just to keep it secure at all.
My wife's Razr though...0 issues...but you can do almost nothing on it.
/rant
I like my new Fuze.
I'm hoping to score the Euro TP backshell, the rubberized fauceted version, so it isn't such a finger print magnet.
It's all about putting on the custom ROMs. Waaay better than the ATT stock ROM that you get out of the box.
i have both the iPhone and the Fuze. both are really cool. but side by side, the Fuze is WAY better.
iPhone battery life is a joke.
the Fuze battery is nothing wonderful, but it is hands down better than the iPhone. not to mention, the Fuze's battery is user replaceable. the Iphone you have to send to Apple to change the battery. which is what you have to do after 400 charges.....
and just wait for the developer to package all the tweaks together in one 'super' rom. the Fuze will rule....
The seventh day...
I have had my Fuze since Tuesday last. Here are my initial impressions.
1. Got rid of TF3D - it is beautiful and very slick, but not an efficient use of the home screen. I switched to running PocketBreeze in full screen mode and using phoneAlarm and the 2day4pay skin as my today screen. Now I can launch my favorite programs with 2 touches at most and get a better handle on my day's activities at a glance. I will miss that very sweet weather animation however.
2. The GPS thing. Yep. Had it. Ran GPS Test until I got a fix and have not had a problem with Goog Maps ever since. Lag? I am not seeing it at all and I am driving through the streets of Providence (enough small streets for the lag to show itself, not enough tall buildings to shade the satellite signal).
3. The BlueTooth thing (where the sound - when you answer and incoming call - disappears). Yep. Had that too and that - my friends - could have been the deal breaker. But I deleted all my headset pairings. When I re-paired them I started with a non-A2DP-supporting headset (JawBone 2). When I paired my A2DP one (Plantronics something with the removable second earpiece) I only got one option under the advanced settings: "Stereo...". Before, I got "HandsFree" and "Stereo...". Since the Plantronics is set, I have sound when answering calls on all 3 BT sets I use (JB2, Plantronics and BlueAnt V1).
Other than that, I miss the scroll wheel - though less than I thought I would and - in general, really like the design (fingerprint magnetics aside). I am now about to find out how well the battery lives off the charger and know I have some work to do to get the thing to hand-up the 3G connection quickly after downloading data as that is a big battery drain.
Summarizing as everybody else:
unusable 5-way pad (undeterministic behavior) unless one does special finger acrobatics
bad/underperforming 3G/H
very slow to lock GPS
broken AGPS
GPS still a huge battery drain (compared to SiRFIII)
useless PTT button unless one hacks it
fairly useless smart touch scroll and not a good replacement for the missing jog-wheel
volume buttons fairly useless for anything else (although plus of volume control anytime), and can't be used as jog-wheel.
slider that blocks the volume and PTT buttons
auto backlight never dims below 3
ATT logo eating screen space in Manila
pointless HOME button
low GLbenchmark values (worst than even Touch Pro)
finger-print magnet on all surfaces and will actually start crusting (unlike Kaiser)
cheap-plastic back that starts wearing immediately on the diamond "points"
So, the major bads. The good is well-mentioned already.
This is my first smartphone, so I'm less knowledgable than most.
But I can already tell that I should be getting much faster HSDPA speeds. Also GPS has never worked for me. I also wish it could be a bit snappier when rotating.
Though this is my first smartphone, I've already replaced the default themes, have already done regedit tweaks for speed, HSDPA, PTT button reassignment, etc.
I'd like to think I'm coming along nicely, but I want to know if I should try to replace the stock AT&T rom with ROMeO
My 2 Cent's
I agree with much of what has already been said (so i'll not repeat it) We are the early adopters and living on the tech edge we share our findings here and the many who unlock, tinker & cook take their own ideas and our observations and try to make these devices better. There is a cost for living on the edge. Just my thoughts on the matter. I have a Fuze and will flash until I am happy or until I move on to something else (had an iphone for about 3 weeks and sold it because I felt too restricted and was tired of re-jail breaking it)
cheers
BR
I was hoping to get all the AT&T Fuze owner's two cents about the device. I'm an AT&T customer with a Cingular 8125, ready to upgrade. I've been poking through XDA-Developers for a while, trying to get a feel for what the XDA-Dev community could do for what I found to be a disappointing performance from the stock Fuze device I tried at the AT&T store.
Right now I'm looking to either upgrade to an AT&T Fuze, or spend a little more and get an unlocked T-Mobile G1 (I'm also drooling over the Palm Pre, but I don't think that's coming to AT&T any time soon).
I guess what I'm trying to get a sense of is... did flashing a custom rom significantly improve the Fuze's response time? And, if its at all possible to predict at this point, is an Android port to the Raphael inevitable, in a fully functional build? The TouchXperience thread gives me hope, but I don't want to drop $350 on a device that doesn't live up to its specs.
What do you guys think?
IMO, flashing a custom ROM completely changed the device. The stock ROM was slow and sluggish and not very responsive (especially with the TouchFlo interface).
I've tried a few custom ROMs and they've all been HUGE improvements over the stock ROM. They all have their own flavor of apps and customizations, so you just have to find the one that best matches your needs. If you like the stock theme (the grey one), then try NotATreoFan's ROM.
On the downside, there are some negatives about it, but I'm still extremely happy with it. GPS seems to have some lag, but after doing some tweaks it is still within my acceptable limits. The battery doesn't last very long if you're a heavy user. I'm a light user compared to many, so the battery hasn't been an issue for me. It attracts fingerprints pretty bad, but again, I can live with it.
I think the VGA screen is amazing and I'm not sure if I could go back to a regular QVGA screen.
As far as Android, I haven't really read much about porting it for a TP, but I've heard where even the G1 isn't really ready for prime time yet. If you want Android, then I would get an Android phone. I wouldn't wait for someone to port it because it may or may not happen.
With Sprint I had the 700wx, Q, Touch (Vogue)...the Touch was my favorite PDA with Sprint because it was so small (I don't really need a physical keyboard).
With AT&T I've had the Tilt and now the Fuze. The Fuze is still a little big for my liking. The Blackstone is probably more my size, but who knows when AT&T will get it and how much it'll be. I think the Fuze blows away the Tilt after doing custom ROMs.
I would also suggest flashing a different radio. If you don't mind paying about $20, I would get security unlocked and flash a Blackstone radio. They give me superb call clarity compared to the stock radio.
I had an 8125 and a Tilt. Now I have a Fuze.
Frankly, the Fuze is fine and doesn't need to be salvaged...it is that much better than the 8125 and the 8925 (Tilt).
I have ditched TouchFlo for a Today Screen running phoneAlarm, Pocket Breeze and Pocket Weather (see the screen shot) and used the advanced configurator to speed up the overall performance and enable 3.5G services.
Very easy. no muss, no fuss.

Ya know, when I looked at Fuzes (and TP's at Sprint) at the store, they didn't work so well, either. You have to realize that the demo's get pretty abused, and that they probably haven't had a soft reset since they were taken out of the box. You get a bunch of knuckleheads in the store opening up every program on the device without shutting them down, and when you go in to check it out, it works like crap. This could have been the problem you found. I know that a couple of the ones I looked at were completely frozen-I knew they needed a reset, but had no idea how to do it at the time (the reset hole is tiny-it's just next to the usb port and requires the stylus to activate it).
I had no idea what I was even getting when I purchased my Fuze. I hadn't even see the thing, or tried someone elses TP.
I ran the stock ROM for about 2 weeks, in case it had any issues. It was terrible, extremely slow, and overall it sucked. I then flashed a few ROM's and noticed a huge improvement.
I now run RSW's Fuze ROM and love it. The GPS locks fairly quickly, and everything works like a breeze. I didn't want all the extra jumble on the phone, so this ROM worked great for me.
There are still a few drawbacks, such as someone above mentioned - GPS lag. I expect this from this type of device. I've got a handheld GPS, and I'd much rather use it than my phone for navigating. The battery does drain, but I have had good luck with it. GPS will kill it, but that is about it. I play Sudoku/Teeter/Solitaire throughout my day, and make a few phone calls, as well as send texts and view things online. I still manage to have decent battery life by the time I get home at night.
I'm pretty content with the phone overall. I came from a non-smartphone, so this was a big leap (and 2 months later I'm still adjusting to some things).
I had a TYTN II (tilt) now a Fuze. Both saw a stock ROM for all of 2 seconds. Personally the fuze is much better than the tilt. I've never worked with Android but in a fe software generations I'm sure it will be great....but its still in its infancy.
I will wait a bit before trying it out.
My two cents
I've got the Fuze I love it and flashing a custom rom (had the at&t one on there for 2 months) was great the phone is 100% faster and so much more responsive and i know once XDA has some more time with this then the few small downfalls will disappear
I had asked the same question before buying my FUZE. Out of the box, it is severely crippled.
After reading tyguy's great article:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459335
I was able to have a completely different device with little effort. I've since flashed a new ROM and can't say enough about how great this device is. TouchFLO is incredibly responsive, I have all the apps I could possibly want, and I've even managed to tweak it to get a little longer battery life.
I was very leery about getting this phone, but now I'm completely happy with it.

That and the stylus ends up stolen after about 2 weeks.
Where do you get all these Fuze tools?
I see everyone talking about the ROMs, radios, gps, and such.
Where can one find these for download?
Is there a list that tells what each does?
I just got the Fuze. This is all new for me and is my

The ones that I looked at actually had the stylus glued or taped in, so you couldn't do a soft reset if you wanted to.

Try that first.....
or this

Flash your Fuze. I'm using Da_G's bare roms which will strip everything down to bare Windows Mobile default apps. The phone screams.
I still use a few HTC modifications, like the Dialer app and Volume control... but all of that crap is eye candy and sucks.
Da_G seems to really be leading the pack with his roms. There have been numerous advances to the drivers... especially the graphics and GPS.
The only thing I think could be better about the Fuze is the buttons. I don't think any of them are programmable on a stock rom. With the most recent roms, we've gotten all of the buttons remappable (both single press and long press) except the Home, Back, and Volume Keys.
There are tons of new innovative applications coming about every day that make the Fuze easier and easier to use. The Fuze/Touch Pro is relatively new. I know the community will solve all of the short comings one day. There are tons of ROMS, hacks, and tweaks already available for this phone. Windows Mobile 6.5 is already underway and I'm pretty confident we'll see Windows Mobile 7 as well.
If you are looking for a phone for the long haul, I think the Fuze is a good choice.
I jumped from the 8525 to the Fuze. I researched and had the downloaded the ROM I wanted and Hard-SPL before I bought my Fuze. I also had downloaded a couple applications I found here at XDA, TouchLockPro and Lumos. The stock ROM was on my Fuze about 10 minutes while I checked that it was working properly. I loved my 8525, but I would never go back. I love my Fuze even more except for the GSP issue. I found a fix here that gets me a lock quickly, but it is still a little flaky and sometimes does not get a lock as quick as I would like. I have not had to use it yet, but I still keep my old bluetooth GPS in my car just in case. I also love having VGA back. I had a Dell X50v before the 8525 and loved the VGA screen and missed it on the 8525, but the Fuze is VGA. I just wish somebody would put the 625 MHz processor and graphics accelerator the X50v had in a smartphone.
I jumped. I went from Samsung Blackjack I > AT&T Tilt > HTC Fuze. Best phone I've had so far. People say it's fat and whatever. I would really ditch the HTC fuze if I didn't use it for all the features. The iPhone is good for playing games and showing off. The fuze is good to actually use. I mean the camera is good, I actually use video out and use it to listen to music. Love it, don't really care for battery life either since I charge it every night. Could care less about the weight. So it's all your choice
If you want a lightweight phone that has plenty of battery is and good for doing multimedia, get the iPhone or Touch HD. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Touch HD since I use the on-screen keyboard a lot anyways and on a bigger screen, it's easier also. It seems like it's worth it. If you don't care about size or battery and need a hardware keyboard, get the Fuze and you won't be disappointed.
I bought a replacement for my 8525. I love the Fuze. Using the stock rom was okay. But after switching to a different rom. The speed increased pretty darn good. Fuze is a good device for years to come.
where do you get the ROMs and how do you install them?
I had a Fuze (coming from a Motorola Q9h) for about a week and a half before returning it. My main complaints were the sub-standard speakerphone, difficulty getting a GPS lock, and slightly worse RF reception compared to the Q9h. I tried the various GPS fixes listed here with varying results and tried several tweaked AudioPara3 files to improve the speakerphone volume, but couldn't find one that upped the volume without distortion or static on the other end.
I really liked the form factor and found the phone to be responsive after following the instructions in the "AT&T Fuze noobs..." thread. I really wanted to like the phone but I use the speakerphone a lot at home and I live in a marginal reception area (lots of trees - reception gets noticeably worse in the spring/summer when the leaves grow back) and the Q9h excelled in both of those areas. If those things don't matter to you the Fuze is a great phone and I'd definitely recommend it.

Take a look here first:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459335
I have the TP2 VZW, and yes, it's a very nice phone. I can't seem to get by the weight though. I always notice it and even pulls at my belt in the holster. Keyboard is great, but could live without it. Anyone else considering the Imagio?
Wish I could put them side to side....
I'm sure XDA will add it to they supported listed when enough get out there.
welll yea the imagio is a 1/3 lighter and the camera is slightly better and way more custimizable and at the same price why not but we need someone to post some deffinitve pictures but as far as weight ita 6.17 oz compared to 4.15 so make that call and post a review
It's really all about the keyboard. If you will never use it then it's just a bunch of extra weight/thickness. If you think you will use it, then get it to be safe. It is the deal breaker.
First off all the easy way now is just to go to Verizon's site and "check" the 2 phones and click compare to see the differences. If you trust Verizon's specs then pdadb.net is not accurate for the CDMA model.
I just turned in my TP2 and have a Imagio coming. I did it as even though the keyboard is awesome and I could type very fast, I am just not a heavy text/emailing. Well I do a lot of reading, not as much writing. So for the extra 2 MP on the camera and the lighter weight I went for the Imagio.
It truly comes down to the keyboard and the camera and how important they are to you.
Edit: In particular PDADB quotes specs are 1/3 lighter but Verizon specs show it being only 1.1 oz apart
Here's a bit of a comparison to the TP2, though it's mostly a review.

i ordered the imagio this morning and it looks like it should be here thursday. that said, i am posting this from my tp2 using the slideout keyboard and thinking that i may have to give the imagio to my girlfriend if i can't live without the keyboard. ill report back when i get the imagio

I believe PDADB was stated as WRONG in another thread. I have the dimensions and weights scribbled out at work.
How did you turn your TP2 in for the imagio? Was this all online/customer service?
I'm considering turning mine in to. I'm under the 30 day free trial. I really like the tp2, but can't get by the weight issue. To be honest, I love the look of TouchPro 2 with Touch Flow, but I loaded spb 3.5 and OH MY! Not as pretty , but less key strokes to get where your going, and if your not happy, just customize it to whatever you want. I swear memory usage went down too, and I know apps pop up faster. I have to use Pocket Informat so the pretty calendar is no loss.
TV Out capability?
Anyone know if the TV Out capability of the TP2 is still there in the Imagio?
Those that got a TP2, I called VZ and if you are in the 30 day, you CAN return, but you have to use the return label.
If you buy a imagio at full price, the rep stated you will get the credit, and the 2 year pricing credit, but it can take up to 2 billing cycles for the credits. That's my only option since the TP2 was bought online.
You might want to call to verify that, but that's what I got when I called. I should have asked her to add notes to the account, but I'm still thinking about it all.

I don't think anyone is getting an imagio until tomorrow (using the free overnight VZ code). The imagio was just up on the VZ site today for sale (internet only)
I thought about it...I rely on the keyboard and the 2MP extra on the camera is not that important because I carry a real camera with me and I actually think the 3MP on the TP2 is decent in a snap, also I don't plan on paying 15 bucks extra a month for the Verizon TV so its a no go.
I'm just hoping the HD2 doesn't come out before my contract is up. I have 10 more days before I can return my fantastic TP2.
Those who do get the Imagio - PLEASE...
If you do get the Imagio, please post your comments on it particularly:
1) What you love
2) What you miss over the TP2
And, most important to me:
A) Is battery life better or worse compared to TP2, and
B) Is the EARPIECE LOUDER stock out of the box, without any tweaks.
I, and probably a few others, would really appreciate it.
i am going through the same thing all it comes down to is this
Touch Pro2
Pros: - Stereo Speakers
- Noise Canceling Mics-slide out keyboard (for those who use it)
Cons - Weight
- No wimno 6.5 (until hspl or vzw releases it)- Thickness
Imagio
Pros: - 5mp Camera
- flotv (for who ever wants it)- Thinner and Lighter
Con: - no keyboard
(the fact that it doesnt have a d-pad is the gripe for me)
Have been using Imagio for a few days now. Love it.
I don't own a TP2, but played with my co-worker's TP2 for a while. You can definitly feel the difference of weight and thickness.
All the phones I've used in past have a keyboard, either 9-key or full keyboard. I thought I can't live without keyboard, but actually I'm okay with the on-screen keyboard, and type fast enough to reply some emails. The only thing I really miss is the jog dial on my old Hermes. When reading text (I like reading novels while my wife is shopping), I can use one hand to hold the phone and my thumb will be right on the jog dial. I can easily scroll up/down. Now I have to move my thumb to touch the screen to scroll, then move it back so my thumb don't block my sight.
Everthing else works great. Camera is okay, without flash, you can't expect a lot when it's dark. I like the FM Radio too.
Now if I can have Manila 2.5 on it I'll be very very happy. Hope Verizon/HTC will release an official update for it.
rhinology:
How is the earpiece volume? The TP2 is very low and can be dificult to hear with any background noise. Oh, and is it true the Imagio won't do landscape for keyboard? Ouch, that may be my dealbreaker right there!
I have the tp2 and my gf has the imagio its basically the same phone. I cant deal with just a touchscreen because it gets irritating i like having the option to jus whip my keyboard out and start typing.
The Touch Pro 2s battery life is much better. A full charge on both phones the touch pro 2 still has 2 bars the next morning while the imagios battery is either dead or 1 bar left running ive noticed this most of this week with both phones around me.

What percent are they at really in the morning? Install the 1% fix to really compare?
And are the settings 100% the same? Same gmail download times? Same checking of weather, push internet on or off?
I would guess that you are saying the stock IM, 6.5 is a battery hog?
Please elaborate!

the settings are pretty much the same we do light browsing maybe 20 mins browsing texting and phone calls like every couple hours 15-20 mins. the only consitent app we both have running is palringo in the background which is a rather light app. I configured both the only thing is she wanted her Imagio set to check for emails every 15 mins mines is set to 30 mins. Now i leave my bluetooth on all day and hers is off unless shes using it. Her battery is roughly at 10 or 5% the next morning if its not powered off.
from my light usage of her phone i havent seen push internet on her phone like it says Push Internet on my browser tab. i dont have any set on my tp2 since i read that could be a waste on battery
ok, so they ARE different, and usage is different. You have 1/2 the data usage as hers based on email checks. Hardly a controlled experiment
Thinking about picking up a tab as soon as ATT launches, I love my captivate but dont really need two identical (hardware) devices. I was thinking about picking up a Aria throwing cyanogenmod and overclocking to 800mhz, i wouldn't mind a smaller phone in the pocket.
Anyone come from a Aria to the captivate and have any knowledge to drop?
ty!
I had an Aria prior to the Captivate and found it to be a little too small for use. The real issue I had that caused me to swap it out was the screen was so dim you couldn't see it in sunlight; that is definitely not a problem with the Captivate.
thanks for the reply, lucky here in the pacific NW the sun shouldn't be a issue. So the smaller resolution kinda sucked? hrmmm.
Started with the Aria, still use it. Have a Captivate also. To be honest, overall I like the Captivate the most. BUT the Aria has adavantages, quick snappy response, GPS WORKS, and does most what the captivate can do. Smaller screen, kind of bugged me, but can get over it. Though the captivates screen is OH SO NICE.... Gaming much better on the captivate also!
^ with a tab (hopefully) on the way the screen size should be welcome for the smaller form factor, the pocket legends beta is making me think twice now haha, looks so nice on the samoled.

I was debating on if I should go to Aria or Captivate when I was getting a new phone. I picked the Captivate because of this too. I love the bigger brighter screen and very glad I went with it. I am very happy with my Captivate. GPS is good enough for me (outdoors), no random shutdowns or any other major problems.
Don't do it. I drove 30 miles to replace my Aria.
The only advantage is GPS. You'll be sacrificing a lot of performance for a smaller footprint. Aria's actually slightly thicker. Just about every spec is worse. Know that it's a mid-range phone that will feel obsolete quickly. You really feel it when loading large webpages/images and playing games.
I loved the Aria it was very responsive although it had a small scree it was really easy to browse through text on the web, GPS was good, it size is an advantage when traveling on business. Basically if you don't need a large screen this is a good phone.
I originally had an Aria that I exchanged for the Captivate. It's a neat little phone, though you won't be able to get some apps that require the arm v7 instruction set (google earth, for example), and live wallpapers run a bit slow sometimes (super mario), but all in all, it's an awesome little phone that I wouldn't mind using as my daily driver.
I ended up exchanging it for the Captivate simply because it seemed more future-proof and because the subsidized price difference was so small that it was hard to justify keeping the Aria.
With the leaks of the Nexus S today, I can see that I made the correct choice. If it turns out that the Nexus S hardware is very similar to the rest of the Galaxy S line (which will most likely be the case, considering the model number), we are basically guaranteed updates direct from google (with a little hacking to get it running on our Captivates) for a long time to come.
Update: Oh yeah, forgot to mention the speaker. The speaker is absolutely terrible. It sounds tinny and buzzy, and you'll be instantly infuriated anytime your phone rings. Watching videos on it is unbearable unless you use headphones. This is another reason I exchanged it for the Captivate.
Aria advantages are fm radio, better browser that makes text readable on the smaller screen. 2.1 os with flash that works, snappy feel do to the smaller screen needing less processing power. Small size.
Dis advantages are poor out door readability especially with screen protectors, poor battery life, I find the captivate to be better, gps didn't work any better than the captivate, actually I think the captivate is better but I seem to be a minority in that my gps works, hard to type on small screen and I'm not one to complain about touch screens, I actually prefer touch screens for typing but 3.2 inches is just to small, non multi touch keyboard. Significantly thicker than captivate, it doesn't look it but it is. call quality not as good, ringer/speakerphone not as loud, camera not as good, captivate camera has many options only winphone7 compares imho but win phone 7 is good for different reasons, also aria camera takes time to adjust to the light, apparent in videos. Stock headphones not as good as samsung stock headphones. Internal storage couldn't hold enough apps.
All in all I did have buyers remorse when I got the aria because I couldn't read the screen in day light and because the internal storage was limited but was otherwise satiated, then when I traded up for the captive I had buyers remorse because missed the fm radio, the browser and the flash player, but it all went away when I started making phone calls, and got a taste of the stock headphones for music, every bit as good as $40 v-moda ones that I had recently broken, and better than the $50 treble heavy skull candies I bought to use with the aria.
The aria was almost a good phone and if you have an sd card and don't use 100 apps and you can deal with the screen there is nothing wrong with it but for the money it might not make sense unless they have dropped the price or the whole required store credit/rebate thing. But I feel the captivate is better for more reasons than the obvious even with it's shortcomings.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
I miss my aria's gps. It worked flawlessly.
The Aria is...
...one bada$$ little phone! I was so very opposed to going to a full-touchscreen phone. I've always had keyboards on all my HTC Smartphones and PDA's. The fact that i got turned on to a full touch screen phone via the Aria is pretty impressive in my book.
Yes it is small. But that is one of the benefits of the phone itself, considering how big all the phones are getting. At this rate it looks like we're almost headed back to the "motorola-in-a-brief-case-Nino-Brown-era". hahaha! Sure, if you have huge fingers it will be a bit of a pain to type on no doubt. But I'm a 5'11" athletic black man and I had not too many issues.
Its just about as snappy as most other "high-end" considered phones in most categories. The speaker does suck pretty bad, but i'm always using bluetooth headsets and BT stereo headphones anyway. I loved that little phone. And now my wife loves it.
I have the Captivate now. I never wanted to get anything but HTC, but I'm on AT&T and the HTC Surround looks like a joke - not to mention I do not want a first generation WP7 anyway. So to the tune of $69 (AT&T matched the Wirefly.com price) I couldn't pass it up. Aside from not having a flash I LOVE this phone and it feels about the same weight as the Aria!
All that to say...YES, the Aria is a solid phone and great switch up from the current popular trend in phone sizes.
Ok so I'm fed up with the garbage that us Canadians have in terms of WP7 launch devices. I hate that every year we end up with the crap phones while T-Mobile and others get all the great ones.
So I'm considering ending my 10 yr run with Telus and reducing my monthly bill in half by trying out either Mobilicity or Wind Mobile. At the same time I have the additional benefits of choosing from any of T-Mobile's phones for use here.
So that leaves me to choose now between the HTC HD7 and the Dell Venue Pro. I am completely up to date on the rumours, bugs and issues each device has. I just need to know for all of you which device you think I should choose (even if it means waiting until Jan).
Btw I am a previous owner of the HD2 and loved it aside from the glitchy OS. And currently using an iPhone 4 as my temp phone (barf).
I was waiting for the DVP but got an HD7 because it was available and I think support would be better with a physical store to perform exchanges. The DVP has obvious advantages like the scratch resistant glass, keyboard and AMOLED screen but even with the shortcomings of the HD7 like battery life, pink tint on the camera (which I can remove using Windows Live Photo Gallery) and LCD screen I am enjoying the OS immensely. Even the recent antenna issue I can cope with and I have ordered a silicone case.
The big unknown is if Dell can deliver a device that works well enough that it would only need a few software updates to fix and until they release it no one can tell. But for those who have had both the DVP seems to be the preferred choice so if you can wait it may be the one for you. Follow the #dellvenuepro tag on twitter to get the latest news and user impressions, best source of info on the DVP vs HD7.
I would say Dell Venue Pro, despite all the current launch problems.
The Dell has a great Amoled screen + Qwerty keyboard.
EDIT: I thought the Dell Venu Pro had flash NAND storage. Apparently not.
The Dell's memory is provided completely by SD card, there is no NAND memory onboard. And while the HD7 camera certainly isn't the best available it beats the Dell in irts current form hands down.

Oh really. Sorry then. I was sure it had
I will edit my previous post.
T-Mobile doesn't have the Dell Venue Pro, they only have the HD7, but I find the HD7 to be the choice phone even if the Dell were available. The HD7 is basically a beautified HD2 with it s black-chrome surround, silver mesh inserts at top and bottom that also conduct sound from the rear speaker. The kickstand is superior to the one on the HTC Evo and the overall build quality of the HD7 is superb. Granted, I had 3 previous HD7s before the one I now have. The first three were faulty and now I have one that is 99.99% perfect. The .01% shortfall is due to a tiny dent or deformity along the rear edge of the chrome surround. If it wasn't for that, this would be a perfect phone.
However, even with the 3 faulty HD7s prior to this one, I still chose to have one because of the gorgeousness and style as well as the excellent hardware specs. If the Dell's AMOLED is anything like other AMOLEDs, I wouldn't have chosen it because of the lack of small text detail. AMOLED is great for movies and pictures but poor for text detail. I saw a Samsung Focus at a local AT&T and was stricken by how much less attractive the main page tiles were in comparison to the other two offerings which used regular LCD tech. The tiles of the AMOLED seemd to have color bleed or a lack of sharpness to the pixels.
If you are mainly into movies and pictures on the device, the Dell might be more pleasing for you with its AMOLED. If you are more into an information device, where text definition is important, the HD7 would be the better choice. I love the style of the Dell, but I love the style of the HD7 more.
I say neither.
Dell Venue Pro
I've been using the HD7 for a bit over a week now and it's really a well built device.
I should warn though that it has a major flaw - the battery. My phone was fully charged this about 7am this morning, no calls and just 10mins of internet browsing. Battery died at 6pm. I'll be swapping it for the Venue Pro when that comes out.
I should warn that I have no idea how the DVP battery will hold up, but as a starter, the smaller screen will help.

To conserve battery life, turn off the GPS. I do this and only use GPS when it's needed...like in the car, where I have it plugged into power. Major battery saver.

how are you going to swap it? By the time the dell is available, you will be past t-mobile's 2week return window....
I wanted the dell VP until it had all the launch problems. I think HTC is a better mobile phone manufacturer.
Great feedback everyone..
Seems like the poll is leaning towards the DVP but comments seem to lean towards the HD7..
I used to own the HD2 so I remember all too well the battery issues. But I was the guy with the extra charger on my desk at work at left it plugged in all day long so I quickly became used to it. I do miss the larger screen especially when compared to this temporary 3.5" screen.
Viewing pictures, surfing the net and playing games (so mostly media) would be where most of my time would be spent on this phone. Really the only thing I like on DVP over the HD7 is AMOLED screen and believe it or not the styling.
Can anyone say for certain whether or not the screen on the HD7 is actually an improvement over the HD2? And if so if it would be a noticeable improvement?
The screens on the HD2 and HD7 are identical, I have Transformers on both devices and pausing at the same screen shows them to be using the same screen.

really man... if you've got nothing to contribute, don't bother. i'm sick of seeing you do this on every place that ask these sorts of questions.
as for which to get, i would probably go with HD7 as the on screen keyboard is massive enough that not having physical keys would be close to a non-issue.

Wow that's a bit of a disappointment since they claim the HD7 sports a "Super" LCD screen. I do remember the washed out screen on my HD2.
Maybe the bigger issue is that I'm impatient and feel like waiting for January for a DVP only to POSSIBLY find out it's still plagued with more issues.
Besides isn't the DVP the heaviest of the bunch?

I've never seen specs or reviews claiming the HD7 has a SLCD. Do you have a link I can look at?

It's my opinion and if I had to choose, I'd choose to wait. Plain and simple. I'm hoping that ASUS WP7 device shows up on T-Mobile sooner or later.
If I was able to make that choice, my snap decision would be the DVP, based almost solely on how much I really like how it looks in pictures. Pure liquid sex.
But then, I'm really used to having a good physical keyboard (Tilt2), and anything with a physical keyboard innately calls to me.
However, since I've sold my eternal soul to AT&T, my choices were a little different, and I could not justify the choice with the physical keyboard, despite the fact that it actually does feel really surprisingly good in the hand. Losing half an inch of screen was too much. Had to go with the Focus.
So yeah, I really don't know where I intended to go with this, but I guess my reply is to stop thinking so hard about it. If you can't wait, then your choice is made by default. If you can wait, wait. Then play around with both. No matter what jerks on the internet say, once you hold them in your hands, you will know.
But then, if you have no way of physically handling a unit before purchasing, and you are OK with relying on the opinion of a guy who has no chance to own either, then go with the Dell!

As for the SLCD screen most of the spec sheets I read show the display as having that. Not saying it's fact just saying that's what seemed to be advertised. If you google "HD7 SLCD" you'll find quite a few matches..

But you wont find it listed on HTC's site, which is what would matter most. And those sites stating that it has SLCD probably just copied from one another, thats the way the internet works these days. I do agree on one thing, the screen size does make it a lot easier to type on and the autocorrect and prediction also add to the ease of text entry. I have posted on forums from my HD7 more in 1 week than in the 6 months I had the HD2.
As you say, you could end up waiting for the Dell only to find out its still got huge problems, but that may be the best option since at least that way you would have the info to make the best decision. 2011 is only 4 weeks and some days away, so its not really that too long to wait.
