Need a reason to keep HD2.

So I am brand new to the whole smart phone market. My old phone took a poo and decided to not work so I figured it was a great time to upgrade and join the new era of smart phones.
I knew nothing about smart phones but knew Ihad to go with t-mobile so I could be undercontract with my gf.
HD2 was all over the the tv/internet so I thought it was the new badass phone so I figured I would just got for it.
When I went to the t-mobile stand they didnt have any because they were selling so fast. I looked at their options and got the mytouch 3g. Brought the phone home and had a blast with the android market, it was so easy to use. Couple days later I went back to buy a case for the mytouch 3g but when I got to the stand they said they just got 6 HD2s in and I could trade in for it. Since it was the phone I wanted I did it.
Took my new HD2 hope and started to mess with it, confused as heck, way different with windows mobile. The phone was fast looked amazing but was not as fun.
Now Im torn what to do.
I guess what Im really trying to do is get input from people who know the market and how these phones will go. Will the HD2 be able to compete with the android market at all? A buddy said Microsoft trys to hard with Windows Mobile to compete but they always fall behind when it comes to phones. Or will the Android market just stay way ahead of the curve?
Thats my rant, I just dont want to regret trading in my HD2 because its still so new on the market.

just got rid of mine...ive dealt with windows mobile too much...i loved the phone but without android on it i feel its not worth it...ive got android on my xperia x1 and love it...just wish i had the big screen like the hd2...i personally suggest you get the nexus one...its an overall better phone and has a fairly big screen along with android....your best bet for now atleast

The HD2 is really nice and fast, but honestly, android is still sort of BETA still. You know what i'm saying? They haven't established completely like Apple. evenutally , Android market will be filled with neat stuff.
I think android is way better than windows mobile.
maybe not apple by games, but eventualy and hopefully, android gets better games and graphics.
And your right, maybe HD2 isn't the "right" time to get it now because it's still new. The android market is still damn new too!

I agree I do like the Nexus one from what I have researched but the problem is its $530. Even though Im a new t-mobile customer I still have to get Googles t-mobile 1 person plan for the reduced rate when Im on a family plan atm.

if you are beyond the point where you can return your phone, I would be interested in getting it off your hands. I love the HD2. My wife has it and it is beyond fast. Flashed a custom rom on it and even the splash screen is cool.

i hate the freaking capacitive screen! sometime you need to zoom in the texts AS BIG as your finger for it to responds!

Especially to the state-of-the-art part. The HD2 has a better screen than the Nexus One. The HD2 has more hardware RAM than the Nexus One.
The choice is simply Android OS on the Nexus One vs. WinMo on the HD2. The Nexus One's only hardware advantage is the noise-cancellation via the auxiliary microphone, and the trackball that not many actually use. Screen and hardware RAM are probably a bigger deal though.
The EVO 4G is probably the only Android phone from HTC worth getting right now since it doesn't have the god-awful Pentile AMOLED display they use in the Nexus One, Incredible, and Desire.

someone sounds bitter.
the screen is a matter of opinion, and it sounds like you've been reading too many tech blogs.
i've compared them both, and i prefer the screen on the Nexus, and so has everyone else that has compared their screen to the AMOLED display on the Nexus. (providing you keep it out of the sunlight)
both the Nexus and HD2 have 512MB of ram(yes, i'm aware the US HD2 has slightly more), and Android is far better with memory management then WM is anyway, so that's a non issue.
and i used my trackball all the time. and who can complain about an extra hardware feature? just dont use it if you don't want it. a legitimate complaint would be the capacitive buttons. those are a PITA until you get used to them.
to the OP, buy the phone you want. but if you liked the mytouch you will LOVE the Nexus. there is absolutely no comparison between the two.

screen size does matter!
i used sony x1 with 3" screen, then Acer neotouch with 3.8 screen, now hd2 with huge 4.3" screen! you can see the different! bigger is better! just try to upgrade your pc monitor to bigger size, and you will see alot more comfortable to the eyes!

All HD2s have 576MB of RAM, not 512MB. The only exception is the Prototype HTC HD2s (Pro.Three) which have 384MB of RAM or thereabouts.
The Nexus One's screen is inferior not only in terms of size but also in terms of color accuracy, sunlight legibility (as you mentioned), and effective resolution. It possesses higher contrast and is comparable in terms of viewing angles, battery life, and power consumption. Yes, I have also seen both devices -- I owned the Nexus One previously.
Also forgot to mention the Nexus One has a bigger battery, but I'm not sure you'd be able to tell with what I've seen.
Don't get me wrong, the Nexus One is a great device. But there is no excuse for arguing the fallacy that the Nexus One is superior hardware to the HD2 -- this is simply not the case. That is a matter of software alone.

[Q] Should I make the switch to Android?

Hi everyone!
As the title suggests, I'm thinking about making the switch to Android I'm currently at windows mobile, on a HD2. It's a great phone but I can't help but feel that WinMo just doesn't make such a great mobile OS.
Custom ROM's do improve the experience and all, but still, it's WinMo.. So, I thought "Okay, I'll sell my HD2 and buy myself a Desire". At this time of writing, someone is willing to pay € 250 (keep in mind that this phone is almost a year old and has some scratches on the side).
€ 250 is okay, but I'm aiming for € 300
But, now I'm getting second thoughts.. Should I wait to switch to android? Or should I keep the HD2? The Desire seems pretty solid and futureproof...
I really don't know anymore.. And since it involves quite a lot of money, I thought I could use someone else's take on this
So XDA, what do you think is best?

Wait for something better than the desire, and in the mean time, use the android rom for the hd2

Yeah, that's why I'm having second thoughts There are a lot rumored phones which should out somewhere around the holidays I guess.. But, is it worth the wait? Because the rumored dual core cpu seems kinda overkill.. And 1.2 GHz cpu's don't really seem to make much difference to me.
I mean, 1GHz is already a lot of horse power for a phone :O

It depends what you want from your phone. I've had the desire since probably about April, and whilst it was already an amazing phone, I rooted it yesterday because I didn't want to wait around for froyo update. Now what was a great phone is a Stellar phone!
But that's just me. As others have said, HTC are bringing some new phones out but hardware wise they're not too dissimilar to turf desire. If you want either a 4+ inch screen an 8meg camera, or a slide out keyboard, then wait for the desire HD or the Desire Z.
If these are not essential, a desire will be future proof for a least a year yet id say. But hey I'm no.expert

I was kinda thinking the same thing Although I'm hoping to get by a little longer with such a phone, so that's why I want to make the right decision this time. I mean, the HD2 feels like a mistake.. It was and still is, a quite expensive phone so yeah..
En pff, a 4" screen is nice but I don't know.. It's probably going to be the same resolution? And the design of the Desire HD looks less attractive compared to the one of the HD2 or the Desire. Well, that's just my opinion

I'd definitely make the switch. With the help of a friend, I was recently able to put Android (2.2) on my Acer L2R Geeksphone. Since then, I've just been addicted to the phone (mind you, my Tilt2 has got super specs in almost every single aspect than the Acer L2R).
Everything that wasn't available for me with Wm is now on Android. My Tilt2 has just been laying on the floor since I got Android on this device. Now I'm looking to get a Captivate.

I've been with Windows Mobile since PocketPC 2002 on my Toshiba e740. I liked the OS because it was hackable. Swap out components, make edits, and new features.
What I didn't like is the sluggishness.
Android on my Nexus One is amazing. Here are a few thoughts that I've come across. The trackball is better then an optical pad, but don't buy anything without either one of those. You could get by without it but the trackball has really been useful in games and emulaters. I'm not sure how the optical pad would suffice. I had a Samsung Epix with an optical sensor and 1 swipe was 1 direction. So gaming is out right there. Selecting text is a pain but better then nothing.
The larger screens may seems nice, but the same resolution things will start to look blocky/pixelized. My friend has an AT&T Captivate (Galaxy S) and the screen looks good. It is a bit too big for me. The bigness of the screen make the phone very thin. Which is a good/bad thing. The Galaxy S is sweet but it lacks a trackball/sensor that is very handy.
The Desire is basically the same as a Nexus One. If I could trade my Trackball for a few physical buttons... I wouldn't. The phone is responsive and fast enough to use the onscreen controls. Being able to hit the green send button to quickly bring up the dialpad would very sweet vs having to launch the dialer from my homescreen. Honestly I don't miss a physical button though.
Life is a trade off though:
Nexus One
Trackball is the best of the best if you want to do any kind of gaming.
Trackball Notifications is a treat, presenting 255 programmable different colors for various notifications.
I think they got the FM radio working on the Nexus One.
Software updates are glorious.
You can make the Nexus one look like the Desire (which is sexy)
Desire:
Physical buttons make it easy to bring up the dialer from anywhere to make a call. I've noticed on Android the End Key doesn't really do anything beside hang up a call. I guess some programs could remap those keys for other uses.
Optical sensor is middle grade. Makes gaming basically useless unless it is all touch controls. Given the quirky multitouch issues of the screen in the Desire/Nexus one, that is also limiting.
I think the Desire is sexy
Galaxy S
I'm not too sure about it yet. I recommended my friend by one, and he did. He complains about the battery being very very short (half a day on light use).
The screen has a blue/green hue. Very noticable.
The screen is easily visible in direct sunlight. Which is awesome.
No trackball/sensor. Ouch.
Hummingbird processor/GPU
Screen has a great multitouch screen. So multitouch gaming is easily possible.
Phone is so THIN that you could probably afford a thicker longer battery to make it last throughout the day.
My opinion... wait. If you want one now the Nexus will start to get Gingerbread probably starting in October (almost a month). Maybe try to find one second hand or cheap. Stay out of contract because some better phones with better processors will start coming out very soon.

The wait for a new phone like desire hd or desire z is not to long and will be a big difference. But no one would blame you if you jumped the gun, especially if you like the design better and feel 1 ghz is enough.

Yeah, the Nexus One has crossed my mind already.. but it's a bit more expensive than the Desire and it's kinda hard to order one and get it shipped right here to Belgium.
I don't know why, but Google doesn't ship to Belgium. It did to the Netherlands but, Google has stopped shipping Nexus' and right now, I don't find a webshop which has cheap shipping or even the Nexus One.
And concerning the Desire HD/Z, I don't think there'll be much difference, the Z will have a physical keyboard and the HD will have a huge screen, just like de HD2 does. But, I noticed that with the HD2, holding the phone can be problematic sometimes. Operating the device with one hand can be kinda tricky, you could easily drop the phone that way..And oh, the Desire HD is not likely to have a trackbaal/sensor And just like player911 says, it's something which is very handy! Most of the time when I have a Android device in my hand, I use the trackball/sensor to switch screens etc.

One of the only things I would have improved on the desire would have been speed of the OS as it ran slightly slow at times. However now that I've upgraded to froyo I'm struggling to think of anything. The minor gripes I had before are mostly ironed out in froyo.
The biggest negative for The desire is the battery life, but this can be remedied in a # of different ways. I have a spare battery for instance. Also, froyo supposedly improves battery but I haven't run any tests personally.

Hmm, I've read about the battery life.. Is it really that bad? I mean, do you have troubles to get through the day with one charge?

Good point. But the Android ports for the HD2 are nothing close to the real deal, it seems. No? And personally, I don't like WP7 at all.. Way to apple-ish for me. I want a phone which lets me do whatever I want to do with it. That's something which is not going to be possible with WP7 - unless it gets hacked, and it probably will, but still, I don't like it

Battery on desire will get you through about a day on a single charge (pre froyo) but its not drastically worse than other smart phones I don't think. I always charge my phone everyday anyway.

My Leo is capable of having the best of both OS and still has same or even better specs than "newer" devices.
And now that WP7 is just around the corner, I´ll stay with WM/WP!

After owning an HD2 you won't to go back to anything with a smaller screen, i did and hated it, so bought a streak! So much better than the HTC in every department

Personally, I think 4" is the biggest screen size I find comfy. Anything bigger is a bit of a risk in the hand.
Ive had the Nexus one and the desire. ALthough near identical, I much appreciate the hard buttons as opposed t o the softkeys on the Nexus.
The Nexus Trackball acts funny after a few months of use (or did in my case) and the optical joystick on the desire randomly breaks with most CM based Roms. so
Btw HTC Sense has a pretty good text selection feature making it easy to deal w/o any sort of joystick/trackball.
I'd wait and get the next range of HTC phones or a samsung galaxy phone. Both will have huge android dev (galaxy coz they simply sold so many!) and HTC because the community has been built around HTC Devices.
The two biggest things on my Desire wish list include:
- better GPU not that I really play games , but hey! I would if I could!
- Multi touch issue (you wont notice it in the browser) but a lot of games are soooo frustrating because of the multi-touch bug
THe Nexus one had the following issues:
Power button has a mind of its own
hard to press soft keys
Bought a Galaxy S to review so will let you know what thats like. Im sure it'll have its quirks.

DVP Or HD7?

I want to sell my Vibrant and get a Windows Phone 7 device. I'm currently on TMobile and I am looking at either the HD7 or Dell Venue Pro. I will be getting either one off contract since my contract is not up yet (bought the vibrant the day it came out, big mistake). Can I know the pros and cons of each of these devices? Thanks!

I own both the venue pro and the HD7 and while they are both good phones the Venue Pro is better in every aspect. also since you live in the US I would recommend buying on ebay. I have bought 2 venue pros new in box there for much cheaper than they are through dell. Anyways they are very similar in specs but if you watch the videos the venue pro is actually both quicker to load apps and quicker to render browser pages. It also has a AMOLED screen as opposed to the old fashioned screen on the HD7 providing more vibrant colors. The overall build quality of the venue pro is much better and the keyboard I thought I'd never touch on it has actually come in use more often than not. If you go venue pro you can often pick up an 8 gig venue pro and a 32 gig memory card for the same price as a new HD7 and perform the card swap yourself and get a phone with twice the memory and an overall better build. All in all if you have the choice go venue pro all the way. HD7 is good but certainly not AS good.

Ok thanks. Will look on ebay for the DVP, found someone on craigslist who might do a straight trade with me though (my vibrant for his DVP).

That's an awesome deal. If its a 16 gig I reccomend card swapping. The factory 16 gig memory cards in the dvp can cause issues. A 32 gig SanDisk runs amazingly though.

well i own the HD7 and my cousin owns the DVP and i can honestly say the DVP is better, smaller screen but the DVP's amoled has very rich colors compared to the HD7 which are good but as mentioned not as good. The portrait slide out keyboard is definatly a plus!! and feels alot more solid, EX the hd7's loose volume rocker, better materials and such. though the Hd7 has more memory when you buy it. 16gb vs 8gb the os is the same, but the DVP runs somewhat faster defintly noticeable when compared. but there is a WP7 update coming with a substantial speed boost. really it comes down to prefrence because the HD7 is a great phone aswell just not as good, the only downside to the DVp is that its only available online so you cant go to a tmobile store to fiddle around before buying :/

Either of those phones would be fine but I really can't speak for the DVP because I've never used one. I do have an HD7 and find it to be the best looking WP7 device yet. It took 4 HD7s to get one without flaws, though. The first one had cell connection problems. The second one had groups of dead pixels. The third one had particulates under the glass plate, on top of the LCD. I finally received a perfect one after going to a different store. The previous store was troubled with an Android fangirl.
My HD7 is a pure masterpiece of quality. It feels solid, sturdy and displays a gorgeous, realistically colored LCD. It has excellent sound quality through the HP port. It has a kickstand for watching videos and has the largest display of all the WP7 devices. At 4.3", it makes a big difference in eyestrain when watching for long periods. The difference is significant, too. On my iPhone with it's 3.5" display, my eyes will become very strained before reaching an hour into a movie. On my HD7, I can watch movie after movie and not have any problems. But 4.3" is the absolute minimum size for comfortable, strain-free video watching for me. And the kickstand makes the experience even sweeter. The HD7 comes with 16GB memory and is not upgradeable without voiding the warranty. And getting to the card is a bit complex...according to the online instructions I saw.
I don't know what the battery life on the DVP is, but the HD7 isn't all that great. I'm hoping MS will deal with BL in WP7.
I can't think of anything else. So good luck on whatever you choose.

DVP:
+ Keyboard, which I use a lot similar to what others have stated
+ Beautiful screen
+ Build quality, overall looks etc.
+ Good speakers
+ Decent battery life
- Not tweakable since there is no registry write discovered yet, so no changing theme colors, IE search provider, etc
- Embarrassingly wretched bad camera, seriously unbelievable, horrifically bad
- No HQ from YouTube
- Piss-poor OEM-specific software (there is basically none)
HD7:
+ Acceptable camera, and can control the shutter sound
+ Tweakable, can change a variety of settings
+ Lighter/thinner
+ Proper YouTube with HQ support
+ Good apps from HTC, including Attentive Phone and Connection Setup
- Average or poor screen, especially with dark themes
- Build quality good, but not as good as DVP
- No keyboard
- Poor battery life
Bottom line is that I like or even love both phones, but I am still looking for my ideal WP7 device.

Yea, the DVP's camera is terrible. It's just unbelievable that Dell put that thing in that phone.
I don't know if I could cound the lack of a keyboard against the HD7 as a negative, though. Few WP7 phones even have a keyboard and with a 4.3" screen using the on screen keybaord isn't an issue.
The DVP's keyboard is good but it adds quite a bit of bulk to the phone, which is a factor for some. Also, it's a portrait slider, which isn't as practical as a landscape slider on phones this big. It makes the phone super big when you're typing.
I guess Dell went with plastics instead of metal because if the phone weighed anymore the risk of damage to the slider would go up factorably.

That's annoying that the Venue Pro can't change the theme or search provider... Not sure if I should still get it.

Having owned both phones I'd say the DVP, overall, is the better phone of the two. It has a more quality feel to it. Flatout the build quality is excellent. However, the curved screen annoyed me a bit, and is prone to more smudges than other phones I've owned. I loved the look of the HD7, but I can't say the same for its build quality though. I went through 3 devices before giving up. Having said that, I love big displays, giving up my 4.3 for a 4 saddened me a bit. I thought HTC Hub was pretty neat too. They've got some useful apps.

I've owned a DVP and an HD7. Overall i liked the DVP pro more, but i went through 4 of them before giving up on it. I found the phone to be quite defective and buggy in many areas, especially concerning wifi.
In the end i sold my 4th one and went with the HD7 just because of its stability.
HD7 is one of the best phones ive ever owned, the only gripe being the display. While fine and somewhat unoticable on it's own, when compared to AMOLED its just no contest. But i'll take that minor complaint over constant freezing and locking up anyday.
I recommend you read through the DVP forum here on XDA and decide if thats something you're willing to risk. For most people posting the phone is defective to the point of unusability. That matches up with my experience pretty accurately. There are of course those that have nothing but good things to say about it, so i suppose its possible to have a good experience with it. I wouldnt recommend it though.

Ok well, here is an update for everyone. The guy on craigslist with the Dell Venue Pro isn't replying to my messages, will see tomorrow what he says. I did find someone on craigslist willing to trade my vibrant for his hd7, straight trade. So, what would you guys do in my situation?
Would you trade:
My Vibrant + 100$ for a Venue Pro?
or
My vibrant For an HD7?
Or wait for the Nokia devices? Sorry for all the questions!

You can't change the Browser search provider on any WP7 phone. The option is non-existent and you have to hack the phone to do it. Changing the search provider on a WP7 device requires more labor than rooting and installing a custom ROM on an Android device. For just that, it's not even worth the effort, IMO.
That being said, if you get it straight from Dell, then shouldn't it come with set as the default for everything?

I know it's not a topic here really but as for me the ergonomy and the camera are important,
I wouldn't trade LG Optimus 7 for anything.
It is a very worthy option.
Very good camera and very good physical buttons. As opposed to HD7. Having physical Back and Search is a really great thing.
Plus the best OEM apps available from LG.
Maybe consider this too. 16GB built in. I think it's on top of current WP7 line.

I have the DVP, and have to say even with its flaws, its still a good phone. Don't expect to use the camera, its pointless. Don't use high quality ear buds with them, hiss is overwhelming. It's bulky enough to think twice about a case, so know that going in. Other than that, the quality is excellent, the keyboard is one of the best, and the phone is solidly built.

SO I played with the HTC Arrive today

Training device at the story, had my share of time with it today, checked it all out.
Pretty nice keyboard and tilt mechanism, hardware felt awesome in the hand. Software is definitely behind though, multitasking is a no go, software really isnt there for landscape yet which is a bummer with the keyboard.
Netflix worked great however.
Just posting in case anyone here had planned to switch from the epic, I can answer any questions about it too.

Oh don't get me wrong, it's very fast, everything loads really quickly.
Sometimes the transitions get annoying when you're just trying to be done with something..it's pretty though.
The worst culprit is the weather in the HTC hub, switching between cities does this whole cloud moving crazy popup thing, it looks pretty cool but takes about 5 seconds and could be very annoying if you're just trying to check the weather in a hurry.
Apps load really quickly, Netflix took about a minute to load up the app and get into a movie on 3g, quality seemed pretty good.
Battery life seemed good, although I had no percentages to work with, it didn't seem to drain that bad.
One thing I noticed though: In the marketplace, larger apps like 3d games can't be downloaded over 3g, it says "Wifi or PC Connection Required"

Really looking to try a WP7 phone, so thanks for this! Did you get a chance to test out the camera, and was the screen any good?

The camera I only took one picture, it seemed pretty clear! I'll try it more tomorrow and let you know.
The screen and type were very crystal clear, it's SLCD and looks absolutely fantastic, not QUITE the Epic but very good.

Also did you have a problem with the screen being 3.6" instead of 4"

I'm swapping out my HTC Hero for the HTC Arrive on the 20th. Can't wait.

that looks sexy but um yeah.... not into that whole hinge tilt stuff and windows phone 7 is just not hooking me.

I actually really like the tilt feature. It works like a kickstand for the screen so you can use your phone as a desk clock better or watch movies with no hands. I wish there was a tilting android phone.

Reminds me of the TP2 keyboard/tilt. That was the best, most responsive keyboard on a phone I've had.
I'd gladly trade my Epic keyboard for an HTC one... you know if it had a 4" SAMOLED screen...

I love the look of this phone it's just like a perfect hardware specs tp2 and that tilt screen is the one and only thing I miss from my tp2, but WP7 can suck it!! If only HTC released this the time the epic was out and had android on it I would of got this!!! I love the speaker on it too, really sexy phone!!

Probably, the question is why bother? It's last years weakest hardware...even after a port the Shift would still kill it performance wise, and don't even try to compare it with the Epic.

Android Trolls have no reason to post. If you are not here with interest in WP7 or the Arrive, then why are you here except to voice your pointless opinion?
Anyway. I also got my hands on an Arrive for a good bit. One thing about the slider, make sure you don't judge it until you remove the clear plastic protector on the back of the screen part of the slider (the back of the screen with the keyboard out). Until that is removed the slider will feel very wobbly, stiff, or overall crappy. Same thing was the case for our Touch Pro 2's.
The overall feel of the phone is really solid and well made, like the TP2 it feels solid but with the metal back and an actual glass screen it feel even higher quality. (Plus I love the way the screen angles off into the 2 grill parts on the top and bottom.)
The OS performed just as expected with performance never showing any sort of hiccup or slowdown. 3G Speed in the area was a bit poor due to it being a highly populated area that Sprint throttles. (Not a problem where I live). It was not a problem for normal use and web browsing but it did take a hit on Netflix playback, downgrading the quality to extremely low but still viewable quality I suppose.
As mentioned earlier/elsewhere, the one thing that is bumming me is the 3G download limit on large apps. I know it is the norm for most of todays phones but with an Unlimited plan, limiting my download size to 20MB is a real bummer. I hope there may be a way around this in due time. Sucks that they expect you to pay for another service while paying for the same type of service? WTF!?
I did not test this part of the phone out though since I did not want to set it up under my live account.
Other parts of mention was the seamless use of Bing search for various things. Unlike on the TP2 where you click on bing, wait a minute, have to quit back out because you forgot to run quick GPS to keep the sat info updated and of course it never automatically updates on its own, back into Bing and waiting another minute, type in what you want to search for (or click on the appropriate button), it searches and gets you what you may want, you click on it, wait a bit to get options, then finally to what you want. If using the Voice Guidance you have to hope it doesn't crash or lock up partway into your trek.
With WP7 it seriously was click button, 3 sec later your there, type or say what you want, it searches for another 2-3 sec, bamn various things related to your search and picking one only takes another 2-3 seconds. Fast, easy, works.
Sure Voice Guidance isn't in Bing for WP7 yet, but it is coming and till then Sprint gets their own Voice Guidance GPS that actually works ok as well.
There is only 1 Problem (Seams to be lightly known) with the phone. Wifi. Similar to the Video Demo I saw of a GSM UK 7 Pro, the wifi would get stuck trying to connect to a network and eventually give up. In the video he mentioned a hard reset fixed this but being as it was not my phone I did not test this. This looks to be a simple HTC bug and I would guess it would be fixed in a side update separate from other updates soon. Still, a bummer seeing how the phone isn't out yet and it's GSM brother has the same issue.
Either way I pre-ordered my phone and plan to enjoy it. The only thing is my upgrade isn't due till June 14th and well, that is a long way away. So I may buy the phone outright and just learn everything I can for a month. It is not that I cannot afford it, I just don't feel like paying $450 for any phone.
$35 to rent the phone for a month isn't a bad deal though. Did this with the HTC EVO. 4G was Awesome, but the Android os, while powerful, just didn't feel finished/polished similar to WM6.5 Roms.
Sure WP7 does lack a few features we have all known and loved on WM6.X and Android, but for what I use the phone for most, paired with the fact that I am getting sick of the phone having weird glitches, lockups, temporary hangs, slowdowns, and overall things either not working or working weirdly, (also on Android for this), WP7 looks for fix that for me. A phone that does all of the features it offers now and does them well. I used to be a huge tweaker for these devices, but after a while, the time it takes to make the phone work 100% takes way too long these days and especially on the old 500mhz chip, it is just not worth the fuss anymore. I have an HD2 to tinker with and use for certain Apps, and a Dell Axim X50v for my other WM entertainment needs.

The last decent QWERTY?

I've got this MT4GS with a recently replaced screen giving me all sorts of problems, Tmo doesn't have any more of them in-stock for an actual replacement. So lately I've been lurking around the ApexQ forums here, considering whether I take Tmo up on their offer to replace the MT4GS with a Relay. Is this it? Is this the end of the line for higher end sliders?
I get so annoyed when I walk into a Tmo shop and they give me the stink eye over my physical keyboard.
"You should really try Swype"
"Keyboards are going away"
"No one really uses those"
"Just try the S4 out, you'll love it"
Try to swype out a thousand words, then do it with a physical keyboard. I'm a bit of a writer, it might be a tine platform for me to write from, but it works great. Sliders are niche preference, will the entire market really give that up? I'm waiting for Google IO before I make any decisions (because it's coming up pretty soon) but haven't heard any rumors of a high end slider coming down the line. Am I the only one holding my breath here?
Also, I've seen a couple of you post on these forums that have had the MT4GS, I think I would miss the 8MP camera the most. Any thoughts on switching over?

I don't have the relay but I follow it and have played with one. It feels similar in many ways to the MT4Gslide (I have this) but you can really feel the improvements in speed as well as a five row keyboard is just awesome. Being its part of the galaxy s line there should be a fair amount of updates, speculation of course as Samsung hasnt been the best at supporting hardware keyboard phones.
You will miss the camera, not that this one is horrible its just that the MT4Gslide has one of the best ever made. I'm not a huge sense fan but it is better than touchwiz (in my opinion) but more of a resource hog. It is possible to port it over to Sammy phones and has been done before, but I doubt anyone would bother on this phone.
Overall if its a free upgrade I would take it, being I refuse to buy phones from carriers this one would cost me full price and I haven't decided if that's worth it yet.

i got both. here are the differences with the relay:
- relay's screen is super amoled pentile... colors are great, resolution sucks big time, pixels can be seen and the red ones are very tiny and the matrix will be very noticeable in some cases
- relay's camera is 5 mp vs 8 of the doubleshot. it is just inferior in both quality and resolution, not much else to say.
- relay keyboard is nicer imho but lacks replicated alt, shift, home, back, menu keys
- battery lasts much longer than the famous 1900mah anker for doubleshot
- the cpu is so much faster, ~2.5x from my findings, also, it heats a lot less
- it is noticeably ligher but more plasticy and flimsy
- stock ics and jb. more development going on
all in all, it is a sidegrade... you lose on some aspects and gain in some others... anyway the high end qwerty era is over since the desire-z/droid 2 period...

I've owned just about every GSM QWERTY device made for android over the past 2 years. I can safely say the Relay is one of the better phones that I've owned for a while.
The G2 was the best phone I've ever had.
The camera is not amazing. It will do in a pinch, but I would take a better keyboard over a better camera any day. The 4G Slide keyboard was horrid. One of the worst I've ever used. I use the keyboard much more than the camera, so my decision was simple. It's based on your preferences, really.
But just remember you don't have many options.

I've been using my relay for about 4 months now and overall I like it a lot.
Some good thoughts first:
The keys are very very good. I find they're slightly less conducive to touch typing than my Sidekick 4G was, but still one of the best small keyboards I've ever used. I can't imagine using a purely touchscreen phone, Swype or not. There's just no competition.
The phone is very quick. I've never once thought to myself "Man, I wish this would happen faster." The OS isn't quite 100% seamless, but it's close enough that I can't find anything to complain about. And things like videos, emulated games, etc are all full speed. The only times I've ever had to wait for something was when I was accessing files, and that's due to my bargain basement SD card.
The battery life has been great. I have no problem getting through my day without carrying a charger with me. Now, I'm not as active a user as some (I don't use facebook, for instance,) but I'm often looking things up on my phone while working, and even using the flashlight, and I always have between a half and a third of my battery when I get home.
The screen and the camera both fall under the category of "It's a phone for chrissakes, what are you expecting??" for me.
The screen is bright, vibrant, sharp. It looks great indoors and passable outside. There's enough room for what it needs to do. If you complain that you can't watch a 1080p movie on your phone, the problem is with your head and not your device. I guess if you offered me a higher resolution I'd take it, but I really don't feel like it needs more. And I wouldn't want the screen to be any bigger. If I wanted a massive screen in my pocket I'd buy an iPad. And then kill myself.
The camera is a dog, but so is every other phone camera in the world. Yes, this one is worse than many. But if you care about what your pictures look like, a $40 digital camera bought used off craigslist will take pictures which are 10 times better than the best cell phone camera on the market. And it's easier to carry a separate phone and camera than it is to have a separate phone and keyboard. So why everybody focuses on the sub-par camera is beyond me.
There's only one thing about the phone which I actually feel is bad, and that's the shape. Coming from a Sidekick 4G, the ergonomics of the phone are a big step down. The Sidekick was a fantastic phone to hold in the hands, both closed an open. The Relay is about as nice to hold as a brick. There's a small lip all around the phone that presses awkwardly against your ear, and it's got a certain awkwardness when open as well. No surprise there, the Galaxy S line has always looked like a knockoff of the iPhone 3G. Why would they start making something comfortable now? </curmudgeon.>
So, yeah. I like it and there's nothing else on the market which comes close to being as good as it. I'd buy one again. I'd suggest it to other people. But I'd also hope that this isn't the last QWERTY Android phone for my network, as there's still room for improvements.

i've came down the g1 (htc dream), g2 (htc desire z), relay lane.
i have my relay now for like 4 weeks. and there's really nothing i can seriously complain about. the cpu and gpu are fast and still come with some reserve. the memory is plenty. the qwerty is a big step up from the dz with the additional row. and battery life is just sweet the dz had the better display when you were outside. the relay's go the far better once you get out of the sunlight.
usually, when i got a new phone, i also got a better cam. but seriously: 5mp is enough for every day use. and as some already stated: it's a cell phone. if you want to have high-end-images, you don't get around buying a dedicated camera. and seriously.. it's the same with the screen resolution. 800x480 is enough for text, websites and pictures to be displayed properly and sharp on the small display. what's the use of a 4" full hd display? besides showing off? again... it's a cell phone. if you want high resolution, get a tablet.
*if* somebody asks me for a cell with a hardware keyboard there really - from my pov - is no reason not to recommend the relay.
and i think it's really a pitty it's not available here in europe and quite hard (and expensive) to get.
i really hope there will be new qwertys that will be available here as well. (the most recent here on sale is the dz).
admittedly the hardware keyboard phones are a niche, but those who want them will be willing to spend a lil more to get them.

I have also used many qwerty phones over the years and have been using the relay for about 5 months now. Previously I have used lg shine xenon, lg shine plus (last lg phone I will ever buy) Sony xperia pro, samsung captivate glide and now the relay. The xperia pro keyboard was the best I have ever used. Too bad it had such low on board memory and only a single core processor.
I hear you on the death of qwerties I can now type quite well with SwiftKey but still love a qwerty for messaging, emails etc. I get the same look from sales staff when I have asked about qwerty sliders.
The relay is the fastest qwerty I have used, bit more than the glides 2x core tegra 2, I also found the keys on the glide to be too flat and there were only 4 rows. Good tactile feedback on the relay, keys are spaced out well and travel is easy. However as mentioned the build quality is not the best and mine has a noticeable wobble when typing. Updates seem good so far although will probably not get past 4.2. I actually went out and bought a q10 last week, loved the new OS but the keyboard was simply too small for me, and for the build quality and screen size the q10 is waaaay over priced, so decided to return it.
On a side note I did a little bit of cosmetic altering the my galaxy s3 stock 2100mah batteries and got them to fit in the relay.. As I live in canada the relay isn't even sold here, and I place battery life pretty much at the top of my list. Need that spare battery and a charger. Anyways good luck with your relay if you get it.

Just give them some more time. They definitely need som enew phones and fresh designs to break up all the slab phones that are coming all the time.

Well, I got the Relay. And with it I end a 8 year HTC only stint which started with the Blue Angel. Fun times...
I just got it today so not much of a chance to play with it. At the moment doing the update. Afterwards will see what else I can do. I find it a bit useless at the moment to try any other ROMs. A bit too early...

I've had 3 previous Android sliders before getting this one - the original G1, Motorola Milestone (which I gave to my husband because it was too big and heavy for me) and the HTC Desire Z. Aside from the Desire Z's incredibly stupid flipping hinge mechanism which I'm convinced was responsible for the display cable dying, it is my favourite of the four (it developed this problem where the screen would die every time I opened the keyboard - I actually disassembled it to see if I could fix it but couldn't)
This phone's not bad and I don't mind it feeling "plasticky" since it's light, while the hinge mechanism seems a lot more solid than HTC's ridiculous designs for the G1 and Desire Z, but the keyboard is LOUD. You have to press the keys really hard and I'm convinced people can hear me typing, which is really not what you want for a mobile device. If you're tweeting under the table during a boring company meeting, you better be good at pretending you're taking minutes!
I also have this weird problem, specific to the Facebook Android app, where it will jump to the top of the page randomly while I'm in the middle of typing a comment. I thought I was pressing something by accident but I've tried typing really carefully and that seem to not be the issue.
I do really miss having a trackball or optical joystick from the HTC devices. It's fine to have arrow keys on the physical kb, but when you have the phone closed sometimes you still want to be able to navigate around and click.

It boasts 8MP camera and high definition display, looks like battery lasts a while.. says its splash proof and also has the 4 row keyboard.
I enjoy my glide, but they keyboard with the press on them hasn't ever given me much of an ability to type without looking at the keys..
On my blackberry after a while I was able to roll my fingers across without hardly looking at the keyboard, on computer i type 100wpm so pretty important for me to have a fast typing keyboard. even software app keyboards can't keep up and screw swipe.. without feeling where to rocker my fingers to form words im doomed to choose from autocorrect.
