Hey,
Im gonna buy a new PDA.
And im in doubt between the ELFin and Polaris.
The Polaris has a GPS onboard, and 256 mem... Other specs looks the same. But is it better as a ELFin?
Are there any negative things about one of them?
Thanks,
HP197
P.s. A read that the Polaris has a 400Mhz proc onboard. But is it a real 400Mhz proc? Or a shared Proc like the Artemis? That one had a 400Mhz proc, but WM had only 200Mhz for usage, the other 200Mhz was used for GPS signals etc etc...
elfin? http://www.cvcoffee.com/prod_images_blowup/Elfin-Blow-Up1.jpg
?
do you mean elf?
if so then they are way different elf is one of the weakest pda's htc have
and polaris is pretty ok
here you can compare

No, i mean the ELFin...
Its the updated version of a ELF, with 400mhz proc, and 128mb mem.
P.s. If i looks to the wiki, i think the official name is Vogue. But some of this forum members call it ELFin

Polaris: http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=801&view=1
ahhh got it
welll Vogue dont have gps as you mention and nor does it have umts or hsdpa
== as slow internet
and it's cam dont have autofocus (not sure how much this mean as i've yet to se a photo taken with any phone which was worth printing to papir or setting as wallpapir on a pc)
also as you mention 400Mhz is not really an universaly good way of measuring speed of the device
only a benchmark will show a good picture of how much difference there is between a
Qualcomm 400Mhz of polaris and
OMAP 400MHz of vogue

Euhhmmm, touch dual (Vogue) does have HSPDA... Only the elf doesnt, but that is the older model. The Vogue is the follow up of the ELF.
But anyway..
Thanks for the info.
Still not sure wich one im gonna take
Edit The Vogue is also missing WIFI. So, it misses 128mb, GPS and WIFI.
Thats a big miss, my vote goes to the Polaris...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Vogue
of cause the wiki of this site is hardly failable but it say that it's
edge and gsm only
also before i checked that wiki i believed the vogue to be only cdma (the american cellphone network which is not gsm)
maybe the vogue forum could bring light to what network it really use
but if it lack wifi which is also strange since elf's wiki say it have that

About the hsdpa on the vogue: Vogue page on a other site, translated to english with google translate (orig: dutch)
About the touch dual with / without wifi: Same site, also translated with google
Look at the end of the page, where all the specs are.
This is one of the more respected online shops for PDA's in the Netherlands. So i suppose there information is right. And i dont think they disabled wifi for our country only. Because the usage of wifi is totaly legal here (some countries does not allow it).
Howwww...
Now i see... Im talking about the vogue...
But the vogue isnt the same as the HTC touch dual (Vogue = P3050, Touch Dual = P5500)
That would explain some mis understandings...
So im comparing between the P3650 (aka Polaris) and the P5500 (Touch Dual... Build name?¿?).
Wich in my eye, the P3650 is the better one.
EDIT:
P5500 Aka Touch Dual == HTC Niki
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=736
Its clear for me...
I Go for the Polaris...
Just because its the one with the most features.

Magician's new born bother in November, our solid new hope for WM5.
http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?action=expand,43089

Even though it looks so very similar to our Magician, they are not related. This is a copy made by another manufacturer, so I doubt they share the same hardware. Different hardware = different drivers = Atom WM5 no go on the Magician
Plus the Atom has 128 MB ROM, needed for WM5. 64 MB just is too small, considering that WM5 takes 85 MB on the Jasjar

Microsoft claims it will work on 64MB. Something to do with executing in place.

Quanta Atom is actually the HTC Athena.
Look likes we finally got some clarity on this new device. It's by HTC.
Chances of portability are again better, but there may be differences in the camera, audio, and memory configuration that will need to be sorted out if one is to port the ROM image over to the Magician. Hopefully the hacker(s) won't end up bricking their device.
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/4306.html
The HTC Athena (Quanta Atom) is reported to have the following features:
Windows Mobile 5.0
XScale PXA272 at 416MHz
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth
GSM/GPRS/EDGE
FM Radio
2.1MP camera
slimmer dimensions than HTC Magician
I just saw that too. I was finding it kinda weird that another company could get away with a rip off design like that
I agree that this could change things a bit. It looks like the hardware is basically the same as the Magician, so theoretically the ROM could run on the Magician, although of course a few things wouldn't work. But irl the chance of running the ROM from a different phone seems very small...
I read somewhere that the T-Mobile version of the Qtek S110 (128MB) would get WM5 as well.
That one is identical to the magician (except for the memory!)
I still think our best bet for the present would be the Raptor ROM (short of it not existing). A forbidden topic though.
That aside, certainly, if the 128MB Magician gets WM5, one would see no impediment in its function on current Magicians.
kneeslasher said the R-word!
No, seriously I can't see the R-ROM ever happening. It's been 14 days now, so even the most optimistic among us surely can smell a rotten rat by now.
There has been no official word frm HTC about WM5 for any of the present devices, so I think the S110 update is just wishful thinking.
Can't wait for someone to prove me wrong, though
Dangaard telecom, the company that distribute the qtek brand in Norway, has confirmed that the qtek 9600 (aka, the HTC Hermes) wil be equipped with a Samsung 2442 400 mhz processor. They also confirm that the phone will appear in shops 3Q. Good news indeed

I have a gemeric hermes and it has 300mhz...
Can you over clock it by 100mhz??
The Hermes was launched at the GSM3 with a 300mhz processor, but there has been rumors that the finished product would hold a 400 mhz processor (i.e the T-mobile mda vario II)
btw...how do you like the device? how's the camera etc?

The device is great - I also have a wizard and universal, the speed is inbetween the two. The camera is not yet finished, the new UI is an inprovement over the previous devices, quality at this early level of firmware is not yet that good. The scroll wheel actions still needs some work but is really good when broswing and in contacts etc.
Oh - there was no extended ROM in my device, it is completly unlocked.
Hello, i have as well picked up my polaris just today, but i didnt buy it from the local distributors of htc ( ace hellas ) i bought an english version since i hate greek on my phones etc. Unfortunately it came as silver edition, tho i cant really complain about the looks of it.
My question now, is there any overclock utility for the qualcomm platform or shall i not mess with it ?
I installed my old destinator 6 in it, 6.1.1 edition that is, and i was wondering, is there a way to enable a-gps or is it always enabled ? ( destinator 7 sucks , well the version i had did, the ui didnt scroll map around and it was pissing me off ).
PS : I havent used it yet, i just installed the screen protector and i am atm charging it.
Any info would be much appreciated, thanks a lot.
You do not ned to enable a-GPS. Just run QuickGPS in order to get the current satellite positions for the next 6 days. Then satlock is much faster.
a-GPS wil work if the signal is present, its mostly used on internal buildings where GPS is required, obviously using standard tech you wouldnt get a signal but a-gps uses a series of special transmitters to relay the correct location, rather cleaver really but utterly usless for 90% of folk.
quick GPS is ok, but to be honest ive never had a problem locking on to sats in anything more than a couple of mins
these people are correct. a-gps is in all gps enabled devices by default as far as i know that are manufactured by htc. quickgps is just there to make the time to get a lock less. it can cut the lock time down even 50% in some cases.
best example i have is a few days ago quick gps expired on my athena and the lock took id say 6 min bc i was inside a min. i closed tomtom and opened quickgps to update and afterwords it was maybe 3 min if not less.
overclocking is not really needed. ur looking at a dual core qualcomm 7200. 1 core handles pretty much voice while the other 400 mhz core carries the gaming and other heavier things. its not needed from expirence with my hermes which was a single core 400mhz.
btw: i recommend u try tomtom. i find it the best for ME and u might too. hope this helped u.
For quick gps, put this file on windows directory

Tomtom unfortunately doesnt support greece so far, only athens ( capital ) and i dont live at it so destinator is the best choice for me atm.

I cant say i am in the wrong forum tbh, i didnt came here to ask for gps programms, only some specific questions.
Thank you for your link though, i knew the skin was wrong and it wasnt working correctly but i guess i was too lazy to fix it.

I strongly disagree with no need for overclocking.
A tool for overclocking is very needed, for running some emulators (for example the PS1 Emulator). I think you need at least 500 (maybe 600) Mhz to get smooth fps.
Hi,
Will there be an Iris forum created? There is very little information available about this phone... I just picked one up, I'd love to get some discussion going around it.

Yeah I moved from a GSM provider to CDMA (S620 to S640 as I was so impressed) but there is nothing out there for this phone.
I really want an unbranded rom as the Telus rom I have leaks memory BAD - it's actually slower than my S620 despite a 400mhz processor and 64mb of ram.

It's a great first experience for me in WM. I agree it has some memory handling issues and it is also listed on htcclassaction.org
I also agree it needs its own forum!
bump
and a HTC libra(S720) forum would be cool also.
still need a forum if there is some interest.
A forum for the HTC S640 would be greatly appreciated.
Yes I would like to see a fourm for it as well.
Since other S640 users are here for now - has anyone been unable to unlock/unhide the ext rom on their device as of yet?
Has anyone found that reducing glyphcache acutally makes their device faster? (1024)
I have found that the following reg hacks seems to unlock the reg on my S640 so that I can edit it with resco:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies]
"00001001"=dword:00000001
"00001005"=dword:00000028
"00001017"=dword:00000090
"0000101b"=dword:00000001
But you have to do them in MobileRegistryEditor to work first.
Hey guys,
My friend wants to get a PPC and he wants to know which phone is better spec wise.
like which one runs faster.
tytn, tytn 2 or wing?
if you know can you put them in order from < (least to greatest)?
Thanks

so i assume the wing is better then them? since it's the last one.
also, where can i find the Atlas? my friend doesn't like the blue on the wing.
Thanks

The atlas is the wing. The "non blue" version of the wing is the herald.
OOO, i see.

how come the Wing's CPU speed is lower then the rest?
why do I have the feeling he put the list from > (greatest to least) and not <

The wing has an omap 850 which is god awful slow, its also got only 64mb's of ram. tytn2>tytn>atlas

The explanation that the T-Mobile officials gives for the Wing's 200mhz processor is that, the Wing dosen't need a 400mHz processor. The Tytn and Tytn 2 both have 3G support hence that requires a faster processor, but T-Mobile dosen't support 3G in first place so the processor power for that is uneccesary.

i really don't find it that slow, it works just fine for me. You might have too many things running at the same time or too many Start up items.
i did put the best first and
a faster cpu is always better
for video games and general performance
though kaiser is missing a driver so
it got some performance issues

There is no "best" one. If you want power then Tytn 2 is the best one. If you want looks and a slim phone then the Wing is. The Tilt(Tytn 2 in America) is also heaver than the wing. So you have a choice of look and feel v/s power. Also if you are planning to use T-Mobile, then some of the Tytn 2's features are useless, same with the first Tytn.
the wing prob also last longer on a charge
but specwise is prob a pure hardware feature and power question more of an usability or requirement question

possibly, since a less powerfull processor requires less battery to run.
