blackberry network / data transmission question - General Questions and Answers

ok heres the deal. i have an 8525 and my company just made me get a blackberry. hate the blackberry and love the 8525. i did try and get the bb connect but the IT guy doesn't want to install the pc software for me (admin only privileges).
so i made a gmail account and set up my work email to be copied there and then set up my 8525 mail pop account to check the mail every few minutes so i have my own "push" email. my question is if i have a "standard" BES data plan for a company (don't have any idea if it is unlimited data or not) am i going to get charged any more or differently by using my 8525 to check the internet for messages or does the blackberry check for email different? don't want to end up with a $500 bill and have the accountants knock on my office door. thanks!
nathan

if you have any kind of data plan on you account, should be covered for your data usage on your phone. e.g blackberry personal max $39.99 includes 1500 txt & unlimited internet usage. tis plan works with bb push email on your ATT 8525 assuming you have the bb client install. aside from that you can use Smartphone connect for $19.99 include no txt & unlimited internet usage.

Blue Angel (MDA III, T-Mobile UK) - Email

Just purchased this device on the advice from the shop that it performs push email. Of course, when I call Customer Services they deny this; SMS text messaging at best. Have I been sold a pup?
push-email? what would that be like? someone writes you a message and you get it instatly as with ICQ without your device checking emails every second?
AFAIK non of the comon email protocols incorporate such a thing. email is a asynchronous way of communication.
you might want to try msn messenger or any other IM instead.. but don't forget you have to be connected to the internet all the time (which of course is a must, if you want to use any ip-based service at all..)
even if your provider (and the phone) supported wap-push (as in WAP 2.0), you'd have to be connected..
AFAIK, SMS is usually the only "connectionless" push-messenger for mobile phones

It can have the Blackberry client installed on it, which is push email, but as far as I know, T-Mob only supply this for corporate users that have a Blackberry server, they don't do the desktop pop/imap client that runs on your PC from what I have been told.
ah, didn't know about that.... but i guess the blackberry has to either still be connected all the time to the internet or the service provider hast do add some new services on his side too?...
maybe your guy at the store mixed it up with the Motorola MPx, which according to a press release will have that feature (using the blackberry technology) ... and the MPx 220 or something like that should have it too..
cheers

I think I remember hearing somewhere that the latest version of MS Exchange can do push e-mail... it works something like the exchange server sends an sms when you get an e-mail and that causes the device (whether it's a XDAIIs or whatever else that is running WM) to connect and download the new e-mail.... never seen it working or anything tho so that could be rubbish...
Perhaps they were simply referring to POP3 through GPRS?? Or maybe just something that they once heard someone say and thought they could repeat to sound knowledgeable!!

Recommend hosted Exchange provider for multiple accounts?

I know this may seem OT, but it is actually tied back to my HTC Wizard. My company currently has accounts with Mailstreet, and they have an excellent interface for managing our accounts. It is Abridean Provisor, and it launches a Java app that allows me to set up users, groups, specify admin rights, etc.
I have tried mail2web, 1and1.com, and 4smartphone.net in some capacity because most of them can a) reduce our costs, b) get more storage space, and c) allow me to use AKU2 push e-mail to my phone. In most cases, though, their support is non-existent, and I haven't been able to figure out how any of these could replace Mailstreet. Here is what appears to be the case:
1and1.com - cannot use company-wide distribution lists and GAL, setting up a single admin account is easy
4smartphone.net - don't remember as much about this one, exccept push mail works well and support was about on par with the others
mail2web - appears to offer full Exchange functionality, EXCEPT that first account created becomes the admin account, period, with no way to change it or specify an additional admin account
Does anyone else have experience with these? I am talking about the Enterprise accounts, not the free (where applicable) reduced feature versions. Does anyone have any other suggested providers?
Thanks!
Mark
We had similar dilemma while moving our multiple companies mailboxes from inhouse to a provider. We finally signed up with apps4rent.com (http://apps4rent.com/hostedexchange.html). The pricing is cheap....
Everyones Boss-the CEO uses Blackberry and some of us use a Widnows phone or iphone....now Apps4Rent provides free syncronization to all Windows phone and iphone.....Considering that they sell mailboxes for $6.95 for 1 GB and free sync for Windows phone....this proved to be cost effective...other were charging something or the other...For blackberry we had to pay a bit additional. Support is good....
You can try and if you think they are not worth it you can cancel in first 30 days and they will refund your money.....

Free Outlook Push email

This may be old news to some but new news to others.
As you may know your WM5 and WM6 device can do a wireless sync with Exchange and offers blackberry style 'push' email.
To do this you need a configured Exchange server and for most this can be expensive or impossible to do yourself.
But there is hope, and its free.
www.mail2web.com offers FREE hosted exchange email. The only thing is you get a little add banner along the top but apart from that its corporate style exchange for free. Whats more it comes with OWA enabled also free of charge.
You can even set it to pull email from other POP3 email accounts.
You can access your mail via the web or POP3/IMAP4 clients.
For around 80p a month you can upgrade to their Plus service, this allows you to have the outgoing FROM: address to be your own. For me I use it to send mail from my personal domain.
So the upgrade is well worth it given the other extra features you get.
But take a look at the free service. I first switched a while ago as ntlworld.com has really crap webmail. So got a free account and just forwarded it all to mail2web.com for full outlook wonder.
I think this is a useful tip as I couldnt find anyone else offering free push enabed services.
alternative
Since this service is goint to cost next month, does anyone have a alternative?
I tried windows live, but it doesnt push emails instantly nor does ita have calender and contacts synchronisation :/
I've been trying to find a good new solution as well.
I'm currently trying out emoze, which is an app that allows you to configure push email (with certain service providers). It WORKS, but it doesn't allow full folder sync with gmail, so it's not quite as useful as true push from my IMAP gmail account would be.
seven is another.
I tried mail2web and was unimpressed though all our domains are there now. It wouldn't push html email.
I'd search out a provider that offers IMAP idle but Flexmail is the only app on the WM side to support it.

gmail pop3 email problems

Hello,
I have problem with my email. I have set up my gmail account on the phone and it works ok. I connect through wifi and for the moment i don't have a data plan.
The problem is with my old emails that disappear when i connect and receive new messages. After that i can only see the new emails.
Is any setting that I've done it wrong or what ? Maybe the emails are moved somewhere else ?
Thank you,
Use IMAP4, it's way better... (and is free to use with google) if you want to know why: [link]
Also you can set how recent can the messages be that will be downloaded...
eg.: download messages from the past 7 days... can be set up to all your messages....
It can be configured in the email setup wizard the first time you setup the email account, or you can re-run the wizard from the Menu -> Tools -> Option -> [gmail account name] menu...
Page 122 of the printed manual...
After i have opened this thread i have done that, but now there is another problem. The emails that i open on the phone aren't downloaded into my outlook on the desktop pc. And if i use pop3 on the phone it doesn't matter if i read them or not, i still can download them on the desktop.
You can use both protocols simultaneusly...
Also you can force the gmail account to download mails... [link]
But, here is how I use my gmail, outlook, PDA...
My outlook is only for storing contacs, and calendar events (as a backup, and for easier editing)
Gmail syncs my mail via IMAP on my PDA (no need for storing mails on PC as Gmail has almost 7GB space for storing mail and attachments, and with IMAP the status of the email is snyced as well...)
This way I can read my mail, and reply on the spot, but if something more complex is needed (like formatting or several attachements then the web based gmail is just as good as the outlook...)
Of course I have a Data Plan...
ok, i think i got it thank you.
As for a data plan i have a good offer from orange. 5 mb/month for 5.95 euro and 1.19 euro for each additional 10 mb. So it's quite cheap, but i have wifi at home, at my office and in many other places that i go.
When i don't have wifi acces it means that i'm on my free time or holyday so i don't need the email.
my polaris generates a 200-250 MB/month traffic... I have a 5GB data plan for 22 EUR
btw, i have the RSS HUB and some other programs running constantly, so it's no wonder...
that's nice, i mean the price for the data plan, but i don't need that much traffic. In fact i don't need even 200 mb.
If i calculate correctly my traffic on the phone is roughly 40 mb/month just for emails, and no more than 10 mb for weather and some internet.
LE: In the other post i said 5 mb/month for 5.95, but it's wrong, 30 mb/month for 5.95 and 1.19 euro for each additional 10 mb is correct. but even like this your data plan is much cheaper.
Sound better that way (30MB for 6 EUR)... but why calculate?
If you got an original Polaris (not O2), then the SPB GPRS Monitor is bundled on one of the CDs...
Sadly I need that much traffic... Using WMWifiRouter between 4-5 PCs can cause some nasty thing if you're not prepaired...
I understand, you use your data plan from vodafone to give internet to other computers. I have diffrent internet providers at home and at the office which both have unlimited traffic at very hi speed with about 10 euro/month.
I calculated because that is a gprs monitor and i don't have gprs...i calculated just as an estimation of what i would use if i would have gprs.

APN confusion regarding GPRS services

I'm having a hard time understanding why European GPRS vendors make a distinction between email, internet, and WAP services, and consequently I don't know what service to ask for when I purchase a PAYG SIM when I travel.
My primary GPRS interest is
SMTP for the handset's email client for IMAP (both google and exchange server accounts)
ActiveSync for contacts/calendar synchronization.
RSS reading, resulting in some cases some podcast downloading
Tethering via WMWiFiRouter
as you can see, i'm not a big HTML user, if at all.
What key terms and phrases should I look out for in the service descriptions in order to get the right internet service I need?
A specific example would be the ambiguity Vodafone Romania has between the email mobile vs internet mobile descriptions and the related APN differences "live.vodafone.com" and "internet.vodafone.com".
Also, for some reason T-Mobile UK is not included in the excellent list given over in the thread GPRS/Internet Connection Settings for the whole world thread. seems like it should be on page 4 but it's not. any reason for that, and does anyone know the APN settings for TMO/UK?
Lastly, what is an example of a WAP service?
Thanks in advance.
there is no universal answer to this
they made a big mess of it indeed. want to trick customers
wap service:
in most cases it won't let you out of vendor's special web page. there you have access to services to check your credit, payments, company info, some ringtone, music shops... mostly useless stuff.
ah and with windows mobile, there is no official way of setting it up. you can use 'work' and set some rules for wap.* ....anyway, you don't want that.
email:
in most cases this service will allow you to access only email on vendor's server.
e.g. [email protected]
in another case you'll have POP, IMAP, SMTP and maybe activesync allowed and web browsing limited to vendor's address.
yet another case is your data plan is small, means you'll pay for 1MB more
for rss you would need full internet anyway.
in general, if you have "internet" service, it have everything in it.
