HTC Engineers at Taiwan Trade Show - Touch Cruise General

I am in Taipei this week and there is a huge trade show going on. Don't know the exact name other than it is next door to the Grand Hyatt.
HTC has a very large both with engineers so I had the great pleasure of talking with the HTC Design engineering guys.
Some conversation points:
The HTC Touch Cruise/Polaris is unknown on actual launch dates.
The HTC Engineerins know that Taiwan is getting the Polaris devices sometime in February.
TomTom software may or may not be on the device. It depends on the carriers agreements and the distributors packaging, sku's, etc
There is a Google software is being looked at and HTC does have a dedicated engineer working with Google and the SDK package for future devices. I did ask if we would be able to upgrade current platforms to the Google phone software and I got a 'probably not' response. (At least I tried)
As promised - Pics -

Can you ask them if they thought Kaiser owners would use their GPS indoors when they blessed the device with transmissive LCDs

Sometime in February, damn HTC keeps pushing the release date away...

kinda silly to use google for gps if one
1. have to pay pr. mb downloaded
2. drive in places where gprs/edge/... is weak or absent

Exactly! This for me is the MAJOR question. Also about Kaiser....I'm still choosing which one shall I pick...
Please........try to clarify this issue once and for all....

I will try to back over there this evening to get a response on the DirectX question and the others.
Just to clarify, the Google SDK is for the new Google Cell Phone OS/ROM/Firmware. Not just GPS feature. It is called ANDROID and is the Mobile Phone Software that Google is hoping to be the alternative to WM5/6. Follow the embedded link to see the videos of the phone software.

I tried getting back over to the trade show but the engineers were already gone for the day. Sorry -

Better luck next time
ThankX for your effort anyway!
Bye!

Hardly surprising. It has nearly always been that electronics for sale in the US at USDxxx are sold in the UK at GBPxxx. Now with a 1.x exchange rate with EUR companies will do the same thing. There is nothing cheap at all in the UK imho.
Some people are just so clear cut on the topic. What is there to see about the page?

Only problem: this is NOT the Magician...

INDEED
Yes NOW WM2005 EXISTS for the Magician, just a matter of time before Buzzdev, Pug or anybody from our cult WM2005 providers could port this or confirm this.

Oh please, just look at the nr of buttons & the features page, clearly not a prophet (lacks the wi-fi), not sure about the charmer though... I'm really convinced it's a re-styling of the magician... Could be wrong though (the page I mean )...
It said "Mobile MDA Compact II Graphite", MDA Compact 2 is a Charmer. I'm holding one now if you want more convincing. End of discussion
in case windows mobile 5 they were testing it on xda II ( whatver the code name is) and it was leaked and they got it on their device I'm hoping or praying rather that they are testing their next operating system `crossbow or photon' on htc magician and that would balance things out so much in the long run because I will be having the same handset till then also as not every now and then I can spend 800$ odd ( inr 34000) wm 2003se does most of the things anyway and with flexmail 2007 it pushes mail also .gprs i do voip with some sucess only thing i would be missing is going to be video call ( who am i kidding ). telcos in india are still laying the network , they are going to pay the licencing fees and 3g is going to expensive . till then the new buzzing device would be with the spec sheet like gprs, edge ,umts, hsdpa twin camera , 4gb memory tv out, gps , qwertyboard . Mid 2007 would be nice time to make choice . what Am i missing in magician anyway (just a little edge ha ! pun intended ). There is one thing about windows product cycle wheteher desktop OS there are so many updates and patches happening .it makes people waiting for new things or patches forever A recent study also showed that pda's which are supposed to increase the produtivity by having all the info at one place and pim's etc . people are more into finding about their current pda or new pdas and constantly new softwares and searching more about it . with so much time spending to find `about it' negates the time saved and gained productivity aspect of it ' .

Marketplace is going to be for Windows Mobile 6.5 phones only, not back-ported to Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.0 phones. That's right - the millions and millions of Windows Mobile phones out there today (40+ million I'd say in the past few years alone) will not have access to this forthcoming software directory. Only people that buy brand new phones, or perhaps a tiny percentage that will get a 6.5 upgrade for their phone, will be able to access this. They might as well made it available only to unicorns - both are mythical at this moment in time.

... Apple made the App Store available to not only new iPhone 3G owners, but first-generation iPhone owners, and owners of both first and second generation iPod Touch owners. For developers, that means millions and millions of customers that are only a few taps away from trying, and buying, their software. Overnight millionaires were made by the Apple App Store because Apple put it in front of so many customers at once. This is the right way to do it.

... They finally get around to doing an application store after an early effort got deep-sixed by their own corporate culture, and what do they do? They make the choice to limit it to users of phones that haven't even been made yet - with Windows Mobile 6.5 not due on phones until Q4 of this year, and with phone networks (in North America at least) carrying seemingly fewer and fewer Windows Mobile phones than ever, it seems like the Windows Mobile Marketplace is going to have a rocky start. ... This was Microsoft's best chance to woo developers back into the fold, and they've botched it - badly.

Lastly, some of you may know that an XDA-user initiated a WindowsMobile Apps store some time ago, codenamed "Gecko" (an unfortunate name they just wont give up, despite it heavily branded connected to Mozilla's web rendering engine that's been around for years)

XDA Thread
I followed this for a while, and there was UI development from various contributors, as well as underlying code. Not sure where it stands.

I appreciate all the wonderful information but I'm not looking for it in a consumer capacity. I already have 6.5 loaded and running and would like to see the WinMob Market Place as a "research project", for lack of better words.
I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean by research project?

Switch Touch Pro 2 for Droid?

I purchased the Verizon Touch Pro 2 the day it came out, but I have never been happy with the phone. I have had some issues with two of them actually. I’m receiving my third new phone this Thursday. I’m going to sell it off on either Ebay or XDA or something, but I was curious to see if anyone else is jumping ship to the new Motorola Droid. Anyone? I think the droid is a great mixture between the customization of WM6.5 and the stability of Blackberry. What do you think? Anyone taking the leap? I think that will be my next phone. I was excited for the WM6.5 update and what not, but it my eyes WM will never be great until possibly WM7.
PS: If you’re interested in a new HTC Touch Pro 2, we can discuss that too! Just thought I would toss that in there…..
We have almost 20 TP2s. Everyone knows the Droid is coming, no one has asked. I have 10 more eligible for upgrades in the next 2 months, and most of them have asked for a TP2.
you say you have had problems? what kind of problems to go through 3 phones :\
I have seen videos of it and it is buggy. For instance if you go to scroll through contacts or a list you drag your finger and about a half of second later it decides to scroll. Plus I can't stand not having decent gps software.

are you talking about the droid not having decent gps software? The google maps on droid looks pretty damn good to me.
Be wary of "The Droid", last guy that thought it was a good idea to switch... well, it didn't turn out so well ...

if you don't want the freedom of doing anything with a mobile device via mods, hacks, and forums (and I mean anything literally) but rather a very handy device that will perform well out the box...then I recommend the droid...but if you want anything you can think of on a phone...stay with the TP2. Pretty much, the TP2, you have to "fix" and "trick" out to see the "actual" potential of what you have where as the the Android OS, you get most of what you would want right out of the box but has limitations. I stay with windows personally cause if I need something, it's there either on xda or ppcgeeks, period. It's just a matter of finding it.
I say do it. The more people we have working on it, the faster we can root it and start modifying.
It looks like a great phone. I can't wait to pick it up friday.

We're here live at Google I/O, and the folks from Mountain View have just shared something rather sweet -- a coalition of manufacturers and carriers committed to making sure their Android devices receive the very latest updates. All four major US carriers (and Vodafone) as well as HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola are on board, and all will guarantee you timely upgrades to the latest version of Android for eighteen months after release, provided the hardware's capable. Now that's change we can believe in.

Good news?

http://www.gsmarena.com/events_roun...okia_and_microsoft_later_in_may-news-2629.php
great news. had this program been in place a year ago there wouldn't be so many bad attitudes in the vibrant forum -_-
What does "timely" mean? And does this represent a change from what they were previously doing? My impression is that most/all of these companies would say that they already roll out updates in a "timely" fashion, regardless of what we impatient users think, and that this is just a commitment not to stop doing that.
lol we'll see. i'll believe it when it happens, but my fingers are crossed cuz that'd be awesome!
don't hold your breath.
I think an actual number should be set in place like 3 months after initial release of the newest version of android? Im not sure if thats reasonable or not but the galaxy S series didnt even start getting 2.2 updates until 2.3 was released. Thats just plain wrong haha.
Google announcement bad news for G2X
This is typical Google BS - saying one thing and getting everyone ready for that, and then turning everything upside down with a different "plan".
2.4 was supposed to be a functional update for 2.3 the optimize it for dual core performance. If you search "android 2.4" - you will still see most links stating just that.
Now, from the above announcement link, it is supposed to be the end-all OS for all devices. Don't expect to see that any time soon now. The "original" 2.4 was supposed to be coming out soon, and I was looking forward to a port or possibly even an G2X/O2X update.
I am annoyed enough with Google that I suggest that take their "Ice Cream Sandwich" and stick it both up where the sun does not shine and where it will melt!
I want a duel core OS and I want it now, as per their earlier alleged plan - it was due out in April.
Bull****. We won't be seeing 2.3 anytime soon.

Those of you anxious for the first-generation of 3D smartphones will be happy to know that the wait is about to end soon. Carefully inserted into our inbox was an invitation to the “HTC 3D After After Party,” an event sponsored by both HTC and Sprint. The event is scheduled for May 10th and follows the Google I/O party, but what it doesn’t mention is the launch date for the HTC EVO 3D. You should also note that Best Buy has already started pre-orders for the highly-anticipated smartphone earlier this week and it’s a clear signal the release date is near.
@ Ramsony (post #3): Wrong device thread/forum dude. If you work for Sprint, I'm glad you are excited but please don't bloat up all the other device forums- though I repsect your enthusiasm and hope you are not a spam bot. BTW- May 10th was a long time ago- in a device launch far, far away...
