Hardly surprising. It has nearly always been that electronics for sale in the US at USDxxx are sold in the UK at GBPxxx. Now with a 1.x exchange rate with EUR companies will do the same thing. There is nothing cheap at all in the UK imho.

Some people are just so clear cut on the topic. What is there to see about the page?

Only problem: this is NOT the Magician...

INDEED
Yes NOW WM2005 EXISTS for the Magician, just a matter of time before Buzzdev, Pug or anybody from our cult WM2005 providers could port this or confirm this.

mstarkar: what makes you think this is the magician, other then the cosmetic appearance? There should be a fine for getting excited about this kind of stuff on this board...

Oh please, just look at the nr of buttons & the features page, clearly not a prophet (lacks the wi-fi), not sure about the charmer though... I'm really convinced it's a re-styling of the magician... Could be wrong though (the page I mean )...

It said "Mobile MDA Compact II Graphite", MDA Compact 2 is a Charmer. I'm holding one now if you want more convincing. End of discussion

in case windows mobile 5 they were testing it on xda II ( whatver the code name is) and it was leaked and they got it on their device I'm hoping or praying rather that they are testing their next operating system `crossbow or photon' on htc magician and that would balance things out so much in the long run because I will be having the same handset till then also as not every now and then I can spend 800$ odd ( inr 34000) wm 2003se does most of the things anyway and with flexmail 2007 it pushes mail also .gprs i do voip with some sucess only thing i would be missing is going to be video call ( who am i kidding ). telcos in india are still laying the network , they are going to pay the licencing fees and 3g is going to expensive . till then the new buzzing device would be with the spec sheet like gprs, edge ,umts, hsdpa twin camera , 4gb memory tv out, gps , qwertyboard . Mid 2007 would be nice time to make choice . what Am i missing in magician anyway (just a little edge ha ! pun intended ). There is one thing about windows product cycle wheteher desktop OS there are so many updates and patches happening .it makes people waiting for new things or patches forever A recent study also showed that pda's which are supposed to increase the produtivity by having all the info at one place and pim's etc . people are more into finding about their current pda or new pdas and constantly new softwares and searching more about it . with so much time spending to find `about it' negates the time saved and gained productivity aspect of it ' .

Hello and help needed

Hi guys,
I'm new here so firstly, Hello!
Secondly, I'm looking to combine my Nokia 6600 and HP palmtop. I'm kinda drawn towards the XDA-exec but am unsure.
I'll be using it to sync with my mail and calender, get on the web and obviously, make calls.
I've been told I should be able to use skype (or the like) and the Wi-fi to connect up and make calls in for example airports (where I spend half of my life!) that way.
I'm not much use with these sort of things so any advice would be great!
Cheers,
Dunc
it's not easy to tell what your questions are
is it
1 should i get a XDA-exec?
2 should i use skype and wifi to make calls ?
in the universal forum people seem to have issues with XDA-exec and skype but sooner or later those should be solved
skype should work with all pocketpc's which have wifi unless there are issues like with the XDA-exec
Thanks Rudegar.
I'm asking both of those really.
Is it worth using Skype?
Will the Exec do all the things I want from it?
Will another device do a better job?
Are there any extras that I haven't thought about that might sway me?
As I say, I'm a bit new to it all so after advice/experiences/etc.
Dunc
Dunc - obviously the Nokia Communicator might be an option, but those are fightin' words on this forum. I've never used one, and don't know if it does Skype. Presumably a Blackberry is less than you need.
I've got a universal and would be inclined to recommend it for your needs, assuming you haven't got money to burn on an OQO etc,

The Universal is a very well built and nice device; pocketable at a push in a strong suit/16 wheeler lorry.
It's chunky for a phone, and I still recommend the Magician (although the wizard is sound, but has Skype issues I believe), for phone/pda, but given that you're using a palmtop now, it'll be a nice upgrade: compact but very functional.
It picks up wireless quite quickly, and is competent techinically. Software is always an issue depending on your use, but the nice thing about the Microsoft OS is that it can be twisted into doing pretty much anything depending on your need.

If it's a real pain in the ti*s to get working or doesn't work consistently then it's not worth basing a decision on.
Keep the advice coming.
Dunc
Dunc: so long as your PDA has >400mhz processor, Skype should be possible.
AFAIK the Wizard has some troubles, but I've not really looked into it, but when Skype works, it works. So if you have need for it, which is probably a strong yes if you spend a lot of time near wifi, then it is worth it.
Your question comes down to the size of device you need and the keyboard. You're strongly advised to go for a WM5 device, so the Magician would be hard to recommend now, but if size is no issue, go for the Universal.
If keyboard is no issue either, a Dell x51v is a good choice as well.
V
Dell x51v dont do normal non VOIP calls though
Thank you guys,
The Universal is looking like a good bet!
Thanks for the help and expect lots of daft questions when I get me hands on one!

Windows Mobile 5.0 for O2 Mini

Hi,
I live in India and a local dealer of O2 phones during a telecon. stated that he can upgrade my ROM to Windows Mobile 5.0. I was really shocked as I went through this forum and many places that WM5.0 is not available. I might have asked him atleast 5 times that is it meant for O2 Mini and he says yes. He would do it for a price of 1200 INR. Would you want me to go for it and whats the gueninity of it. If its succesful can I make a SD ROM backup of it and upload it in the forum. Please advice what can be done and it involves cost of Rs. 1200 and I dont want to waste it.
KIRAN
Sure!
Of course you sould go ahead! After that please write here whether it works or not and if it works you can upload it here. I believe it's possible because there are also another versions of Magician available - they have weaker CPU (Samsung 195 MHz I think), EDGE and WM5. So try and tell us.
kiran1103: is this the original wm2003 Magician, or one of the updates?

Be careful, most people believe that no release version (or unrelease version!) of WM5 has ever been made available for the original HTC Magician. If you can get hold of it, show the guy your phone first and get a guarantee it will work on your phone.
Make sure it's an operating system upgrade, not just Wisbar or a new skin. Get him to show you it on another working phone first, and make sure you know how to check (try soft resetting and check rom version etc, and the "about" option in control panel).
If you can get WM5 for the Magician, I'm sure there are people here who will help copy it off your phone, and I'm sure there are other people who will donate money to cover your costs
I would advise not going ahead with it until you're sure and have seen it working.
V
Sorry, the CPU is TI OMAP 850, not a Samsung ...
I guess that this is another bullsh1t about upgrading to winmobile 2005 :x
You should knoww that there is no windows mobile 2005 for magican and it was discussed for millions times :!: :!: :!:
I don't belive this!
Just make sure and see for yourself it running... that would be the best upgrade ever to the magician all in all... not much faith here but it's never bad to try...

Maybe this dealer is the guy who PM'ed me couple of days ago. He asked me where to download WM5 for Magician. Maybe he found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=24780
I answered him, sure I can give him the download address, if he paypals me 500 US$ ;-)
Maybe he now looks how to get money for the investment...

HTC Engineers at Taiwan Trade Show

I am in Taipei this week and there is a huge trade show going on. Don't know the exact name other than it is next door to the Grand Hyatt.
HTC has a very large both with engineers so I had the great pleasure of talking with the HTC Design engineering guys.
Some conversation points:
The HTC Touch Cruise/Polaris is unknown on actual launch dates.
The HTC Engineerins know that Taiwan is getting the Polaris devices sometime in February.
TomTom software may or may not be on the device. It depends on the carriers agreements and the distributors packaging, sku's, etc
There is a Google software is being looked at and HTC does have a dedicated engineer working with Google and the SDK package for future devices. I did ask if we would be able to upgrade current platforms to the Google phone software and I got a 'probably not' response. (At least I tried)
As promised - Pics -

Can you ask them if they thought Kaiser owners would use their GPS indoors when they blessed the device with transmissive LCDs
Sometime in February, damn HTC keeps pushing the release date away...
kinda silly to use google for gps if one
1. have to pay pr. mb downloaded
2. drive in places where gprs/edge/... is weak or absent

Exactly! This for me is the MAJOR question. Also about Kaiser....I'm still choosing which one shall I pick...
Please........try to clarify this issue once and for all....
I will try to back over there this evening to get a response on the DirectX question and the others.
Just to clarify, the Google SDK is for the new Google Cell Phone OS/ROM/Firmware. Not just GPS feature. It is called ANDROID and is the Mobile Phone Software that Google is hoping to be the alternative to WM5/6. Follow the embedded link to see the videos of the phone software.
I tried getting back over to the trade show but the engineers were already gone for the day. Sorry -
Better luck next time
ThankX for your effort anyway!
Bye!

That is one sexy phone, although...unless it is based on something entirely new there is a lot suspiscious about it.
1. The Home and Back buttons, those are WM Smartphone keys, not WM Professional keys
2. Its a lot thinner than the Touch Cruise, which makes me wonder if its based on a new platform
3. The seem in this pic, seems reminicent of a slider design...I almost think this might be more a revised T-Mobile Shadow for Europe...What do you guys think?

I'd have to disagree, here are some pics of my Touch Cruise, most pictures online don't capture it very well. Being a smoked mirrorlike finish, its look really depends on how you photograph it...
Looks really great with this black shiny finish!
The Question really is what kind of cpu is in it. So far I havent seen any information about that. Just empty words but no facts.
If this phone would really be another Polaris Clone, then the question is, where have all the keys on the outer frame gone? The only two keys, that are left are those for min/max Volume. No camerabutton, at least I wasn't able to see it on any photo. Also a statement points out that it uses a VGA-Resolution and has already WM6.1 as OS on it.
Another thing is that there is no Card-slot to be seen on the frame as it is clearly visible on the TC. Everybody is talking about a "huge internal memory" something about 4GB. So there are only two conclusions, either there is an internal chipslot for a microsd, so you need to detach the casing and perhaps the battery to change a card or T-Mobile is completely relying on an internal memory like 4GB. I think that the latter possibility is not the prefered one.
Anyways, that were my 2 cents and mainly only speculation, I'm looking forward to getting more information about that stylish Design Device.
Greetz.
Just visited a TMO shop in London and they said the MDAC4 won't be out "for a long time". In fact, the guy was so impressed with my TC I thought he was going to make me an offer for it!
Silver finish looks sleek, the black versions look really cheap, IMHO.

Any news
Time to leave t-mobile. hmm o2 is absolutely sh*t
7.2Mbps HSDPA, GPS, VGA resolution screen, WiFi and 4GB of on-board storage. Windows Mobile 6.1 at this point.

Trade my HTC S710 for a SE P990i... Would you do it?

I have an option to trade my HTC S710 for a friends P990i... I'm playing with the P990i right now and the large touch screen and browsing with the built in Opera browser is amazing.
I still don't really know if it's a stupid trade. I love my HTC S710 aswell but I've always wanted a touch screen.
The P990i has 3G and a 2mpx camera with autofocus aswell... It takes way better images than my S710 does.
Since this is mainly a windows mobile forum this might be the wrong forum to ask for an advice like this.
What would you do? Which device do you think is better??? I only have until tomorrow to decide...
Help me please!!!
I have no experience with touchscreen-less WM phones but I have both an HTC TyTN and an SE P990i and must say that I prefer the P990i because of it's better camera, better usability as a phone and that A2DP works perfectly without skipping and without draining the phone battery - at least when paired with a DS970 headset. And contact names are displayed in the headset display without the need for third party software!
The only issue I have with it is that the Media Player has a bug with the handling of very long MP3 files. I like audiobooks and the player is not able to resume properly after pausing and closing it in the middle of a book. Instead most of the time it skips to the next MP3 file in the book.
And of course the infamous memory leak issue that SE never wanted to admit existed before ending firmware development. You need to reboot the phone at least once every second day to avoid the phone doing so on its own while you're in the middle of something.
I've almost decided to keep the P990 and give him my HTC S710 now after I've been playing with the P990 for hours.
The P990 display is gorgeous and I've installed the Gdesk application and a WM6 design so it looks absolutely amazing and with swiss manager pro it's also very easy to close apps running in the background.
It's just that I'm afraid I will miss the whole WM community a lot!!!
I forgot to mention I kept the S710 aswell so now I have both
The next day I asked him if I could buy his P990 instead because I wanted to keep my S710 and he sold it to me for only ~$150, I guess it was a bargain after all?!...
I've made my P990 look almost like WM6 using the gdesk shell app...
