Hello and help needed - General Topics

Hi guys,
I'm new here so firstly, Hello!
Secondly, I'm looking to combine my Nokia 6600 and HP palmtop. I'm kinda drawn towards the XDA-exec but am unsure.
I'll be using it to sync with my mail and calender, get on the web and obviously, make calls.
I've been told I should be able to use skype (or the like) and the Wi-fi to connect up and make calls in for example airports (where I spend half of my life!) that way.
I'm not much use with these sort of things so any advice would be great!
Cheers,
Dunc

it's not easy to tell what your questions are
is it
1 should i get a XDA-exec?
2 should i use skype and wifi to make calls ?
in the universal forum people seem to have issues with XDA-exec and skype but sooner or later those should be solved
skype should work with all pocketpc's which have wifi unless there are issues like with the XDA-exec

Thanks Rudegar.
I'm asking both of those really.
Is it worth using Skype?
Will the Exec do all the things I want from it?
Will another device do a better job?
Are there any extras that I haven't thought about that might sway me?
As I say, I'm a bit new to it all so after advice/experiences/etc.
Dunc

Dunc - obviously the Nokia Communicator might be an option, but those are fightin' words on this forum. I've never used one, and don't know if it does Skype. Presumably a Blackberry is less than you need.
I've got a universal and would be inclined to recommend it for your needs, assuming you haven't got money to burn on an OQO etc,

The Universal is a very well built and nice device; pocketable at a push in a strong suit/16 wheeler lorry.
It's chunky for a phone, and I still recommend the Magician (although the wizard is sound, but has Skype issues I believe), for phone/pda, but given that you're using a palmtop now, it'll be a nice upgrade: compact but very functional.
It picks up wireless quite quickly, and is competent techinically. Software is always an issue depending on your use, but the nice thing about the Microsoft OS is that it can be twisted into doing pretty much anything depending on your need.

If it's a real pain in the ti*s to get working or doesn't work consistently then it's not worth basing a decision on.
Keep the advice coming.
Dunc

Dunc: so long as your PDA has >400mhz processor, Skype should be possible.
AFAIK the Wizard has some troubles, but I've not really looked into it, but when Skype works, it works. So if you have need for it, which is probably a strong yes if you spend a lot of time near wifi, then it is worth it.
Your question comes down to the size of device you need and the keyboard. You're strongly advised to go for a WM5 device, so the Magician would be hard to recommend now, but if size is no issue, go for the Universal.
If keyboard is no issue either, a Dell x51v is a good choice as well.
V

Dell x51v dont do normal non VOIP calls though

Thank you guys,
The Universal is looking like a good bet!
Thanks for the help and expect lots of daft questions when I get me hands on one!

Hardly surprising. It has nearly always been that electronics for sale in the US at USDxxx are sold in the UK at GBPxxx. Now with a 1.x exchange rate with EUR companies will do the same thing. There is nothing cheap at all in the UK imho.
Some people are just so clear cut on the topic. What is there to see about the page?

Only problem: this is NOT the Magician...

INDEED
Yes NOW WM2005 EXISTS for the Magician, just a matter of time before Buzzdev, Pug or anybody from our cult WM2005 providers could port this or confirm this.

Oh please, just look at the nr of buttons & the features page, clearly not a prophet (lacks the wi-fi), not sure about the charmer though... I'm really convinced it's a re-styling of the magician... Could be wrong though (the page I mean )...
It said "Mobile MDA Compact II Graphite", MDA Compact 2 is a Charmer. I'm holding one now if you want more convincing. End of discussion
in case windows mobile 5 they were testing it on xda II ( whatver the code name is) and it was leaked and they got it on their device I'm hoping or praying rather that they are testing their next operating system `crossbow or photon' on htc magician and that would balance things out so much in the long run because I will be having the same handset till then also as not every now and then I can spend 800$ odd ( inr 34000) wm 2003se does most of the things anyway and with flexmail 2007 it pushes mail also .gprs i do voip with some sucess only thing i would be missing is going to be video call ( who am i kidding ). telcos in india are still laying the network , they are going to pay the licencing fees and 3g is going to expensive . till then the new buzzing device would be with the spec sheet like gprs, edge ,umts, hsdpa twin camera , 4gb memory tv out, gps , qwertyboard . Mid 2007 would be nice time to make choice . what Am i missing in magician anyway (just a little edge ha ! pun intended ). There is one thing about windows product cycle wheteher desktop OS there are so many updates and patches happening .it makes people waiting for new things or patches forever A recent study also showed that pda's which are supposed to increase the produtivity by having all the info at one place and pim's etc . people are more into finding about their current pda or new pdas and constantly new softwares and searching more about it . with so much time spending to find `about it' negates the time saved and gained productivity aspect of it ' .

Upgrading from Magician... what to get now?

My magician has developed a hardware fault with it's sound. It's time to upgrade.

It was my first Pocket PC phone, and although I liked the size, I've decided I want something a little better
I'm not sure what to get. The TyTN looks like overkill for me. I don't use my phone much, it's more of a PDA that conveniently doubles as a phone.
I think transcriber is the best input system for text, as long as you know how to write. The idea of typing with thumbs irks me, so I don't really want a keyboard, unless someone else here can say that transcriber sucks vs a thumb keyboard.
Oh, and it's gotta be VGA. QVGA is cute, but yeah, I want VGA.
So, anyone got any recommendations?
Hi Jed.
I was going to recommend the Jamin which is the 'natural progression' from the Jam, but the I got to the end of your post and saw the 'must be VGA'
As far as I know there is only one VGA phone out there today and that is the Universal/Exec/Jasjar.
Personally I'd never get something that size to double as a phone. It's a great gadget (2 cams. BT WIFI 3G) but has the form factor of a brick.
I think you should reconsider the TyTN or Hermes. I love my Jamin but it lucks 3G, and if you're going to upgrade, might as well think of the future.
As for VGA, what can you really do with it on a 2.8" screen?
Well that's just some thoughts for you.
Hey, thanks for your reply.
The reason I want VGA is
a) I don't want to have to recompress movies to watch them. I dont' care how big they are.
b) I use my magician extensively for Japanese. QVGA is just too small for Kanji, which is really hard to read at that res. I have to copy it to Pocket Word and jack up the font size to be able to read it.
c) Higher res wallpapers are sexy ;D
As for the future, I plan to move to Japan in the next six months to a year, and I don't want to spend heaps on a phone that I'll just have to ditch when I move. I know how finnickey their phone system is.
I've been looking around, and I read somewhere that the Wizard was VGA. But from what you've said... it's not? Urk, it isn't. Lucky, I was about to get one, heh.
EDIT: Looks like you're right. Oh well, I'll give up on the VGA and go for a Jamin.

Switch Touch Pro 2 for Droid?

I purchased the Verizon Touch Pro 2 the day it came out, but I have never been happy with the phone. I have had some issues with two of them actually. I’m receiving my third new phone this Thursday. I’m going to sell it off on either Ebay or XDA or something, but I was curious to see if anyone else is jumping ship to the new Motorola Droid. Anyone? I think the droid is a great mixture between the customization of WM6.5 and the stability of Blackberry. What do you think? Anyone taking the leap? I think that will be my next phone. I was excited for the WM6.5 update and what not, but it my eyes WM will never be great until possibly WM7.
PS: If you’re interested in a new HTC Touch Pro 2, we can discuss that too! Just thought I would toss that in there…..
We have almost 20 TP2s. Everyone knows the Droid is coming, no one has asked. I have 10 more eligible for upgrades in the next 2 months, and most of them have asked for a TP2.
you say you have had problems? what kind of problems to go through 3 phones :\
I have seen videos of it and it is buggy. For instance if you go to scroll through contacts or a list you drag your finger and about a half of second later it decides to scroll. Plus I can't stand not having decent gps software.

are you talking about the droid not having decent gps software? The google maps on droid looks pretty damn good to me.
Be wary of "The Droid", last guy that thought it was a good idea to switch... well, it didn't turn out so well ...

if you don't want the freedom of doing anything with a mobile device via mods, hacks, and forums (and I mean anything literally) but rather a very handy device that will perform well out the box...then I recommend the droid...but if you want anything you can think of on a phone...stay with the TP2. Pretty much, the TP2, you have to "fix" and "trick" out to see the "actual" potential of what you have where as the the Android OS, you get most of what you would want right out of the box but has limitations. I stay with windows personally cause if I need something, it's there either on xda or ppcgeeks, period. It's just a matter of finding it.
I say do it. The more people we have working on it, the faster we can root it and start modifying.
It looks like a great phone. I can't wait to pick it up friday.

ICONS : "STARGAZER" (and more...)

Hello and goodbye all,
I’ve just sold my HD2 as I didn’t need it anymore due to my company giving me a BlackBerry and not allowing me to set up the HD2 on the company e-mail system due to security…
I’d love to have kept it but I simply don’t need two phones.
I already miss my HD2 even though it wasn’t perfect, ref. quirky keyboard, in-car BT not compatible, always keep a spare charger nearby, (and one or two other little things).
In particular I already miss the nice big HD screen, in-built GPS with a variety of nav. software to choose from (I ran CoPilot and liked it), the fun side of the HD2 (good games and multimedia), and I really miss CHT and having all those shortcuts being just a quick swipe away!
(But I am already used to the BB connecting to my car BT automatically again though, and the battery lasting up to 3 days with normal use.)
I also miss the ‘moddability’ of the HD2, which brings me onto the purpose of my post...
I didn’t really have much time to spend on modding; I have a family, I like going out and I have a job – and I like sleep!
But, I did do a bit of stuff for personal use, some of it I have shared on here before (quite a while ago now). And this actually took me quite some time to do so I thought that I would share it with everyone rather than simply press delete on the HD2 folder on my PC. Maybe somebody else would like to use some of my templates to help them with their own work – that’s up to you, but here is some of my stuff anyway.
I ran my own icons on my HD2; I had about 98% of my apps covered. It was this project that I spent the most time on and is really what I want to share with you - please find STARGAZER icons within the attached .zip file. The other stuff I also ran on my HD2 but I’m not really bigging that up so much, but use if you like. (Please extract the .zip files properly to maintain the folder structure.)
I have also included some PhotoShop (Elements) files with the stuff I have attached, not for all icons due to file-size (I do still have all of them), but enough so you can use them again if you wanted to.
All of the enclosed image files are my own work, with the exception of the base icons. Most of the graphics I have made from scratch.
I have attached a screen shot from a previous post I made to show you the icons - I didn't like the clock in the image so I mad a different one with blue bubble digits - it's all included in the attached .zips.
The font isn't mine, I got it off of XDA, but I attached it just in case you like it and want to use it.
Please use them as you like (if you like)………..
Cheers,
Nick.
Maybe I'll see you again in the future...

Good Luck with the BB mate
thanks for posting your icons nniicckkss, look really good.
good luck in the future with your BB, my mate has a BB Bold and swears by it, maybe not as 'fancy' as the hd2, but having minimal software and OS issues must be nice lol
I really like your icons ! why not do some of these icons in windowsmobile software application? If you do it then thank you very much!

I don't know how to cab these up, but I've no real interest in looking into this now as I've left Win.Mob. as my OS.
Please feel free if you or anyone else wants to do this - use them as you like.
I installed them all manually on my device!!

Will audio MMS ever come to Windows Phone?

Really WTF?, I am amazed by the fact that something as simple as this can not be done on a so called smart phone that is supposed to be leaps and bounds ahead of WM.

I miss sending simple MMS to people and don't see what the big deal is with MS not allowing this, I mean you can send video which includes audio but not audio it's self does that make any sense? I mean they even have apps in the market place that lets you down load free ringtones, are the developers at MS smoking crack?
I don't know either but MS need to straighten soon or im jumping ship else where

I would too but I would never go iPhone nor Andriod; I think that if I were ever to jump ship, I would just get a cheap talk and text phone. I just don't get why MS is trying so hard to be like the iPhone when the real competition is from Android
Seriously Microsoft? You can't send video MMS either? What the ****? Jesus Christ !!! What the **** can you do with this phone?

Never say never...come to the dark side lol....why not? they jumped shipped on wm & it users. MS only competion is themselves, they went iphone clone to get beat out by an wm clone, have crappy marketing, dont have alotta devices, & wp lacks many standard features. They shouldve scrapped the windows name and/or had commercials like to they did for pcs showing how easy is it to use.
Not to mention setting up MMS to work for an unlocked Windows Phone is almost like impossible. I think I will regret buying the Radar and will just be better off selling it

I don't blame you, there is a large amount of people that are going out and buing WM devices and ditching WP, if this doesn't open up MS eyes then I don't know what will. For one they need to stop fagging around and stop trying to be like the freaking iphone, 2 they need to get their heads out of the cloud, most people don't want to use that **** and 3 they need to listen to what people actually want, their answer to every question is "That is not possible at the moment".
