I HATE RapidShare, etc... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

So I've setup my own server... err, modified it a bit to allow registered users to upload and download free.
Here's a link to Dutty's TouchFlo ROM for the Tilt from Nov. 29th.
http://gormanonline.com/files/folders/roms/entry575.aspx
I have a 15/2 connection so it should be "decent" speed. The server is slow though so tell me what you think.
Registration is required simply to prevent spam. I should only require your name, username and a password - simple.
All you ROM hackers, give it a try.

thanks...rapidshare is disgusting me, be it is easy if you download rarely and such

Thanks man I will give it a try. You should also put on there XDA and Custel's ROM.

I never understood why people use Rapidshare and Megaupload when there are far better services. Like Mediafire for instance.

Mediafire sounds great to me. Is there profit sharing on the other sites?

what about that uploadto.com or something where you are not limited to 1 file per hour or something.

Good for you
Hi Dutty,
Good for you! and also good for us for making this easier to download... Thanks VEXAMUS.
However, i suggest that you can drop this little index.php in the root dir from h**p://www.bitfolge.de/snif-en.html. It will list your dir content and you can hide/unhide certain ext... but the most important is, it hides the server information Apache/1.3.39 Server at www. cinetsystems.com Port 80 which might be useful for hackers and the like.
just my 2cents...
IF you asked i would aslo give you free webspace with unlimited bandwith.
Dutty,
Any ETA on when the new ROM will be uploaded to the server?

Too much files mate
Is it me, or all the dates/times wrong on the files on the server?
I noticed the same problem with a similar looking site belonging to custel.
I know, I know. I'm anal...
Oh, wow... I hadn't seen this thread.
I'm glad you're enjoying your space, mate. I do very much appreciate your work. So thank you kindly for what you do.
FYI, I fixed the way files display, now the file names won't get cut off, should make for slightly easier navigation.
Peace.

Dutty Website

Hi all,
I was speaking with Dutty and was going to start him a website so he could load some ROMs up for everyone's enjoyment but neither he nor I have the time to webmaster, was wondering if i could get a volunteer. I will provide all the hosting and the domain, which we still havent picked any ideas . Shouldn't be too time intensive, we arent wanting him to have his own forum or anything he will still be here for that just maybe a FAQ repost and some other minor stuff. Let me know if you are interested, PM me for more information.
Thanks again man, nice and thanks for offering
I can transfer the actual site as soon as my server is back up and running. But be sure what you offer and if your server can handle that awesome amount of connections and downloads in parallel. good luck
i can make the repository....im a php geek...should be a no brainer as long as the hosing is quality...any chance its a cpanel host? id install an open source prog...prob joomla or wordpress....then some light skinning
It will actually be meant to help him out, it is a Microsoft Hosting solution, PM me for some more details if you want to get a hand in helping. I am not sure if it will be able to handle all the trafic Mr. Dutty generates but it should help get his ROMs out.

lol well if you don't trust M$, you could always use Apple.... (maybe not)
not to stray off topic or anything
but yeah... Dutty... if you need a repository, i can build one for ya in less than 24 hours... its 1am in Hawaii, so ill hit the sack soon...
after thinking about it... something like dotProject may be better... this would include your repository AND your bug tracker / report module....wouldnt surprize me if there wasnt a mobile skin for it allready... i know that wordpress has a freebie mobile skin...
frankly, its gotta be a little disturbing for you to have to comb thru hundreds of pages of jibber jabber to find legit bugs... having a bug tracker built into the repository could simplify that for you.
ya know... theres allways the whole "hey community, why dont we chip in and buy dutty a hosting plan somewhere with the spex to host it "

Is ASP.NET enabled(if yes what version 2.0, 3.5?), and what should the site have?
Should it be a static page or a page with a control panel where someone can edit the page?

Ok guys this should help with some of the questions, it is a web site hosting package the details can be found at www.1and1.com it is the ms developer package.
why dont post them on usenet and post the nzb files on xda thatway the speed is fast and the roms dont use up ur bandwith....
or make a torrent out of it and start a xda dev torrent server...so everyone gets to share the bandwith
Try Drupal. Pretty nice CMS with lots of addons. I've used Joomla too, but its pretty heavy of an install (ie: overkill in my opinion) for what you are talking about.
Okay, site is back and running. Rom hosting is "outsourced" to another location. Thanks to frikibaby.
so have fun with testing dutty's roms.
k.
I had him on one of my servers, he was doing about 1.2TB/month in traffic. He wasn't really affecting my server, however, my other commitments required that I do some moving around, his site had to go... for now anyway.
never mind

Host Roms on Torrents

I'm sure almost all of you will agree with me when i say rapidshare sucks! and by rapidshare I also mean the rest of the rapidshare-like sites (4sites, mediafire, megaupload, etc) ... and its a pain to use them to download roms, especially if there are multiple version roms (lite, full, cube, etc) and you want to get more than one (I'm not cheap or anything, but if I have to give money to download the files [referring to websites' premium account, etc], I'd rather donate the money to the rom-cookers for their hard work)
and I think most of us are familiar with torrents by now ... I searched the forum, and i don't think it has been suggested or brought up before ... but how about having a torrent setup for the roms ...
There are a lot of people (including me ) who are willing to help and share as much as possible ... ideas/comments/suggestions ?
p.s. I hope this isn't against any rules ... correct me if I'm wrong
Well, the problem with torrents is that they have to be on all day or at least until they get an ample amount of seeders so they can stop hosting it. There is a lot of people that have a limited connection and that would make it worse. For those of us who have good internet connections, and can host torrents, then this would be a good idea, but some people cant. Unless they get help from people who have good internet connections.
I've posted most of the files on my site..
http://f1ip.net/Downloads/KaiserFiles
.. and torrent sucks.
I wouldnt download these from a torrent, or anyone elses site other than the authors published links.
How do I know you haven't tampered with it prior to uploading it??
Maybe if the cooks list the MD5 for each release, then I *might* be tempted.
What if xda-devs set up a private tracker?
My torrent client is always running on my pc at home only for private trackers. its not worth having a bunch of leachers and hit and runners if they were hosted on public torrent sites.

I like torrents but still... here my link to the files.... see my signiture:
guys ... use 4shared.com ... no wait ... 5gb ... only max 100mb file limit!
If I am at home well supported torrents are MUCH faster. I think torrents would be a great idea and an MD5 is easy enough to generate.
4shared.com is one of my favorite download sites used on here. It works well when I am at work or on someone else's network that doesn't have the ports set up for bittorrent. But I have never seen the speeds from 4shared.com that I get from bittorrent.
I have flashed a LOT of roms on the forums and the worst thing for me is when rapidshare says "Wait another hour to download". I can tell you that I would seed the ROMs
Just my 2 cents
why
My internet sucks, my wife is always angry that I am here and not talking to her, personally I would like for you all to only host files any place that the cook would like. Really it is up to them. This is a good idea though.
This way I can stare at XDA even longer waiting for the new rom to be placed on my phone.
tilt
Rom..dualtouch v4
radio 1.27.15.32

gave to my wife
now it is a cute paper wait
No torrents for me. I tried downloading a previous ROM from one and it took two hours versus a very quick download with the free rapidshare or megaupload...
(384K DSL)
Just about anything other than rapidshare is better. Latest ones I've used are 2shared.com and 4shared.com. Also Sendspace isn't too bad.
I used to put roms up on Torrents via piratebay and had a box that I left online to seed them. Problem was I saw people pulling, but nobody else was seeding. So the only way torrents will work is if you get others that are willing to pull and share, and not just pull.
why cant you post it on usenet and make a nzb file out of it so anyone can download it fast with grabbit or something and just post the nzb file here thatway people like mfrazzz dont have to seed endlessly and everyone can download the rom fast

I second this idea!
It's been a while since I patroled the NNTP servers... is there an appropriate group for posting these type of files?
start a new group alt.binairies.xda.kaiser??? for our roms or alt.binairies.xda for all roms posted on this site like the ftp sever before microsoft bashed it
use this forum for nzb posting and the usenet for all the pars and rars so people only need to install a newsreader and download a nzb file not search for all the pars rars manually
keep the acces to the usenet group closed for cookers only so that not anyone can subscribe to the group
the only thing the cookers have to do is upload the file's to the group and create a nzb post it in the forum and everyone is happy
I think torrents are much better idea.
But the tracker should be in xda site and accessible only to registered members of the forum.
If everyone will keep the golden rule of 1.1 ratio, then there are no problems and It will be much better that all free upload sites. rAPIDHSARE sux...
Whatever the case is I think its worth a try...
Great Idea! Also, have a point system based on the ip you use most on here, so when ever you don do your share you loss points and a certain amount of points is required to download certain things! If you cant seed for certian reasons then you will be the excpetion? Eh, good idea?

Torrents, a bunch of mirrors, mirrored mirrors and all sorts of things have been discussed in the past. None of them got past the talk stage. If/when they have, they've been completely *OWNED* by the bandwidth usage.
There are hundreds of people downloading these files and you'll be lucky to have a 100:1 ratio for seeding vs. downloading. That means that everyone will get around 2KB/s each, 7x to 21x slower than the typical 15 to 45KB/s download from RapidShare or MegaUpload.

Torrents are really only good for 1gb files and up.
Torrents would work fine if it was done on a credits-based system with a private tracker (private meaning you must create an account, not invite only - could be tied together w/forum accounts)
The tracker would enforce at least a 1:1 ratio beyond the first 'free' download, and in the case a torrent gets orphaned the tracker could also hold a local mirror of the files, so when seeds becomes < 1, it kicks on as a seed and finishes at least one person off to keep the torrent alive..
As far as torrents being only really good for 1gb files and up, that holds true for public torrents, but on a private credit based system, arbitrary sizes work fine
Plus people in general have a fixation with making a number grow larger and larger, so a credit-based system has it's own built in motivational driver. It's the basis for most video games out there! (score, xp, level, etc!) You could even give each forum user a special icon or access to a custom tagline, etc. depending on their current level of credits, for another motivational driver to keep seeding up.

JF cupcake mirrors needed (no, its not out yet, but will be)

Thanks everyone, I no longer need any more mirrors. I think we have enough (or too many) right now.
More than happy to offer hosting space and bandwidth. I'm on an unmetered line on my own hardware in a good datacenter, I'd be happy to host it for you...
Great. if you can provide an ftp to an empty folder I will upload the file when I get it. If not you can just pm me when you get the file hosted and I will add it to the list. Whatever works best for you.
When the official cupcake drops will it automatically update to that OTA if you are on 1.43 or would you be stuck until you ran the JF Cupcake update?
Just wondering. I will check with my host and see how much bandwidth I am allotted (I just switched hosts).
Darkrift said:
I was just thinking and reading threads about the much anticipated JF cupcake image that will surely be coming any day now. I checked cyrket and found 5,000-10,000 users are using JFupdater which will use a TON of my hosting bandwidth. I am hoping to get a list of users early who can help mirror this update. Keep in mind, this is going to require immense bandwidth and speed for about a week. Please do not offer if you are unsure if your server can handle it because it will just fail and stress the rest of the servers.
The update is not ready yet and I do not have a date, but I would like to get a preemptive handle on the issue before it does so all users can get their cupcake ASAP. Keep in mind, my hosting used up 800 gigs of bw in one week when JF released 1.43, and I expect a much larger turnout for this rom. Also, if you are able to provide me an ftp to upload the image when I get it that would be great, but not expected. Thanks in advance.

I have a silly question/suggestion
why don't you use a free file hosting service such as rapidshare and megaupload ?
I have slow international upload (1mbit) but i am on guaranteed channel (a.k.a business account) and have no bandwidth or simultaneous connections limit. The server is rock stable. If you think that such a slow connection can help please reply me and i will provide an ftp account for the update.

Rapidshare and megaupload don't allow you to provide direct links to the file (at least I don't think they do), and he's needing direct links in order to let JF Updater use them as mirrors. BUT, I *think* drop.io does let you copy and send the direct link. I think I have done it...its been a while. I'll test it out.
Nope. Doesn't work. They time-out after a minute or so.
I can offer 1tb of transfer to this project, 100mbit .us link
I can offer some bandwidth as well
I can put it in my public dropbox folder on getdropbox.com if you want. I tested it out, and it will work. here's a link: https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1034365/Top%20Secret.txt
can someone verify?
Sure ...

i say great. there is a lot of space availible. so let the build come
You might want to delay the automatic update for a few days (if not a week). Let the people who really want the update do so manually (via rapidshare, etc.) and then the traffic consumed but the JFUpdater crowd will have diminished significantly.
You can use the mirror off my site (androidevolve.com)
isn't this one of the use cases bittorrent solves best?
More than likely, yes, bittorrent would be a good idea for these. Just so long as there's a true or truely mirrored torrent, and not force us to go searching on TPB or a site like that.
I have plent of space available on htcsource.com, just send me the file when ready and I'll send you back the link.
I can offer up some mirror space on a 10mb link us co-location. Send a PM if its still needed.

Sure its way better to download the Application from the vendor using "stolen" Logindata *rolleyes* ... Rapidshare is good for some purposes, and I pay for that.
Example: I like to download game demos quick and without having to look at 5 popup-ads and click through 5 webpages to see 10 mirrors where 7 are overloaded and 3 are not working. And so making me to search for another page which provides the download, just to see that the transfer-rate for 1,5GB data is around 75kb/s and my downloadmanager GetRight won't work because the pages include a few tricks to disable such managers.
Thinking about that, I LOVE rapidshare (and other Oneclick-Providers)
