Host Roms on Torrents - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Windows Mobile ROM De

I'm sure almost all of you will agree with me when i say rapidshare sucks! and by rapidshare I also mean the rest of the rapidshare-like sites (4sites, mediafire, megaupload, etc) ... and its a pain to use them to download roms, especially if there are multiple version roms (lite, full, cube, etc) and you want to get more than one (I'm not cheap or anything, but if I have to give money to download the files [referring to websites' premium account, etc], I'd rather donate the money to the rom-cookers for their hard work)
and I think most of us are familiar with torrents by now ... I searched the forum, and i don't think it has been suggested or brought up before ... but how about having a torrent setup for the roms ...
There are a lot of people (including me ) who are willing to help and share as much as possible ... ideas/comments/suggestions ?
p.s. I hope this isn't against any rules ... correct me if I'm wrong

Well, the problem with torrents is that they have to be on all day or at least until they get an ample amount of seeders so they can stop hosting it. There is a lot of people that have a limited connection and that would make it worse. For those of us who have good internet connections, and can host torrents, then this would be a good idea, but some people cant. Unless they get help from people who have good internet connections.

I've posted most of the files on my site..
http://f1ip.net/Downloads/KaiserFiles
.. and torrent sucks.

I wouldnt download these from a torrent, or anyone elses site other than the authors published links.
How do I know you haven't tampered with it prior to uploading it??
Maybe if the cooks list the MD5 for each release, then I *might* be tempted.

What if xda-devs set up a private tracker?
My torrent client is always running on my pc at home only for private trackers. its not worth having a bunch of leachers and hit and runners if they were hosted on public torrent sites.

I like torrents but still... here my link to the files.... see my signiture:

guys ... use 4shared.com ... no wait ... 5gb ... only max 100mb file limit!

If I am at home well supported torrents are MUCH faster. I think torrents would be a great idea and an MD5 is easy enough to generate.
4shared.com is one of my favorite download sites used on here. It works well when I am at work or on someone else's network that doesn't have the ports set up for bittorrent. But I have never seen the speeds from 4shared.com that I get from bittorrent.
I have flashed a LOT of roms on the forums and the worst thing for me is when rapidshare says "Wait another hour to download". I can tell you that I would seed the ROMs
Just my 2 cents

why
My internet sucks, my wife is always angry that I am here and not talking to her, personally I would like for you all to only host files any place that the cook would like. Really it is up to them. This is a good idea though.
This way I can stare at XDA even longer waiting for the new rom to be placed on my phone.
tilt
Rom..dualtouch v4

now it is a cute paper wait

No torrents for me. I tried downloading a previous ROM from one and it took two hours versus a very quick download with the free rapidshare or megaupload...
(384K DSL)

Just about anything other than rapidshare is better. Latest ones I've used are 2shared.com and 4shared.com. Also Sendspace isn't too bad.
I used to put roms up on Torrents via piratebay and had a box that I left online to seed them. Problem was I saw people pulling, but nobody else was seeding. So the only way torrents will work is if you get others that are willing to pull and share, and not just pull.

why cant you post it on usenet and make a nzb file out of it so anyone can download it fast with grabbit or something and just post the nzb file here thatway people like mfrazzz dont have to seed endlessly and everyone can download the rom fast

I second this idea!
It's been a while since I patroled the NNTP servers... is there an appropriate group for posting these type of files?

start a new group alt.binairies.xda.kaiser??? for our roms or alt.binairies.xda for all roms posted on this site like the ftp sever before microsoft bashed it
use this forum for nzb posting and the usenet for all the pars and rars so people only need to install a newsreader and download a nzb file not search for all the pars rars manually
keep the acces to the usenet group closed for cookers only so that not anyone can subscribe to the group
the only thing the cookers have to do is upload the file's to the group and create a nzb post it in the forum and everyone is happy

I think torrents are much better idea.
But the tracker should be in xda site and accessible only to registered members of the forum.
If everyone will keep the golden rule of 1.1 ratio, then there are no problems and It will be much better that all free upload sites. rAPIDHSARE sux...
Whatever the case is I think its worth a try...

Great Idea! Also, have a point system based on the ip you use most on here, so when ever you don do your share you loss points and a certain amount of points is required to download certain things! If you cant seed for certian reasons then you will be the excpetion? Eh, good idea?

Torrents, a bunch of mirrors, mirrored mirrors and all sorts of things have been discussed in the past. None of them got past the talk stage. If/when they have, they've been completely *OWNED* by the bandwidth usage.
There are hundreds of people downloading these files and you'll be lucky to have a 100:1 ratio for seeding vs. downloading. That means that everyone will get around 2KB/s each, 7x to 21x slower than the typical 15 to 45KB/s download from RapidShare or MegaUpload.

Torrents are really only good for 1gb files and up.

Torrents would work fine if it was done on a credits-based system with a private tracker (private meaning you must create an account, not invite only - could be tied together w/forum accounts)
The tracker would enforce at least a 1:1 ratio beyond the first 'free' download, and in the case a torrent gets orphaned the tracker could also hold a local mirror of the files, so when seeds becomes < 1, it kicks on as a seed and finishes at least one person off to keep the torrent alive..
As far as torrents being only really good for 1gb files and up, that holds true for public torrents, but on a private credit based system, arbitrary sizes work fine
Plus people in general have a fixation with making a number grow larger and larger, so a credit-based system has it's own built in motivational driver. It's the basis for most video games out there! (score, xp, level, etc!) You could even give each forum user a special icon or access to a custom tagline, etc. depending on their current level of credits, for another motivational driver to keep seeding up.

Rom Distribution - BitTorrent?

update:
http://alanrosenquist.com/bt/index.php
has anyone thought about distributing using BitTorrent instead of these file sharing places that add limits?
we can discuss the advantages and disadvantages here.
from what i see:
advantage:
easy distribution
everyone contributes to the dispersal
faster speed
simple
disadvantages:
people might not share
if file is bad or corrupted - waste of time
i'm on a 5/2 mb fiber line. i wouldnt mind helping to distribute. it would also help - statistically - to find which roms are being distributed the most, and which are most popular. -- not just to members of a forum posting that they "like this one the most because...."

ya making a bittorrent link would be nice
but ur point about being the file bad or corrupted is the same for http links with bittorrent the file cant get corrupted during upload/download (it will check the hash when its finished)
I vote YES!
Nice idea, but I guess it will done, because will no seeders. Hundred of files but no seeding, it's usual problem of small trackers.
I was thinking the same thing rapidshare et al suck. Problem will always be having seeders available. Usenet is another great option, but requires having a decent provider, and not quite as widespread and easy to use as bittorrent. We could always try having links for rapidshare, bittorent, and usenet (NZBs), and see what happens.
I have a dedicated server, willing to seed pretty much at all times. I am not sure how much traffic a tracker will generate but I am willing to do some testing. Anyone have experience setting up trackers?
and what is somebody makes a site. with only ppc software torrentz?
I have very slow GPRS connection at home... At work I have really quick connection, but Bittorrent is blocked there for obvious reasons... Rapidshare works.
The rapidshare is not the ideal, but for me it is better than torrent... Also remember that these files are not so popular (not so many people downloading ROMs all the time), so you will almost certainly download slower that from rapidshare (because unless you are lucky there will be just one "seed" and you - and even this only if anybody will be willing to make a permanent seed).
Torrent is good for big popular files - the Wizard ROMs do not fall to that category...
Mirek
blackgear - I presume you don't mean warez, right? Because I'm sure you're familiar with our forum rulez.
Guys, if you're going to torrent roms, an alternative idea might be to bunch quite a few roms together into say a 700mb torrent of various roms. That way, those who are generous can seed a bunch of roms all in one go, whereas those who need a specific rom can just download the specific rom from within the torrent.
I think in this way, you're more likely to continue to see the less "popular" roms still being seeded, as they will all be hosted within the big torrent, and the big torrent will also be less likely to end up being "poisoned" by someone/companies with viruses or fakes etc.
IMHO.
V
my honest opinion, this will never work. Torrents were always good for popular mainstream stuff. People should go here for all the information instead of going to some torrent and downloading it, and end up bricking their phone.

Dedicated Evo File Tracker w/ Web Seed

As some may know, I am working on a dedicated Evo website.
The biggest feature will be my file distribution system.
I hope for it to be the first of it's kind, it will both upload the file and create a torrent of it.
This allows the file download to be stream by both means.
If anyone is interested in obtaining upload access I am accepting requests.
My only requirement is you have unique Evo related files to offer (ROMs, Boot Screens, etc).
This is still in development, but should be complete and ready for testing within the next 24 hours.
Sounds like a good idea, but please don't use torrents. P2P technology is a horrible way of sharing development files for a number of reasons, the main one being version control. If someone wants to download a file straight to their EVO, a torrent will be of no use to them.
Just my .02.
Usenet ftw!

There will be direct links on the servers to the files alongside the torrents.
I may do a simple browser check to only allow direct downloads from mobiles.
I really want to encourage torrents with web seeds, it's never been done before!
Anyways a status update ~ IT NOW WORKS!
I just got uTorrent to download a file without any user seeds and it went through like a champ.
I honestly don't think anyone has created such an automated system, I am quite proud of myself!

I like your idea for using http as a backend for torrents if there are no seeders. I have actually thought about this method many times in the past, I never thought someone would of put it all together into a working method. CONGRATZ MAN!!! This would of been so useful in the past when I was working on a couple warez/script websites/forums. You should jazz this script up and make it a little more customizable, maybe with a simple admin cp, and then release it to the script community, people will love you! I know I do!
that's pretty genius, i like it. Good job! Should make an excellent way to distribute EVO Files!

Have you heard of BitTorrent DNA? It is made by BitTorrent Inc. for exactly this sort of thing. You host a file on your HTTP server and BitTorrent DNA creates a torrent for it. Users download from each other when there peers available, but otherwise they default back to your server.

ROM makers: Want a different host for your files?

For the last 6 months I've been hosting files for developers in the Eris section. I made the site to people wouldn't have to use all that MultiUpload crap, got sick of the waiting 60 seconds to download a file, entering a verification code, etc etc.
Anyways, the site's worked well. You can direct link to your files, upload everything via a simple web interface.
I just thought I'd offer the site to developers in other forums now.
http://android.grdlock.net
Anyways, if you're interested in using it to host your files, just make a username on the site real quick, shoot me a PM, and I'll give it upload permissions.
And no, this isn't an advertisement or anything. People in the Eris section have just liked using the website over MultiUpload, so I thought I'd offer to let other people use my bandwidth as well.
I can jump in on this as well - I have unlimited bandwidth so if you need another mirror, let me know and ill set you up on my server.

Rom and file storage

I have being a user of this site since my HTC FUZE, and from that day on I'm hook. Because not only it allows me to have my phone how I want it by flashing Rom's or
make my life easy with new member made apps.
And from day One it plagued me that wonderful chefs and people would upload there work to Mega upload and other Upload services, which don't get me wrong Is free and well they do there own thing. But what grind my gears was that you had to wait a few seconds and or you could only download one file per IP or whatever.
I friend and I are working on a service for all you chefs or people who have files to contribute to xda developers and then sum. Basically what this is, is a file hosting site for roms and kernels and other files related to flashing modifide phones. Currently I'm testing the site on my own server at home make sure things work well
Here are the features.
1. Free Because, you people(insert Robert downy jr joke here) do this with out charging us the users.
2. upload space of 500 megs (more to come)
3. when file is uploaded in your GUI there will be a link that will send you a email with the url of the file so you can share it with the world, Or here.
More to come. also please tell me what you think of this Idea and also I hope the mods put in a sticky or something so developers/chefs can see this and be updated for when we roll out the site. Also you may ask your self "why would they do that and lose money on server space and all this crazy shenanigans. Well We plan to put ad's (I know horrible frickin ad's :0) and if they hearts are willing donation would hurt. But please in no way is necessary.
Anywho I'm off Is late and as Im sure I misspell half of this post for lack of sleep please forgive me.

Bitdroid - Dedicated Android ROM Torrent Tracker

Bitdroid - Home | Bitroid - Tracker | Bitdroid - Forum
Introducing Bitdroid! The dedicated torrent tracker for Android ROMs!
After a couple of weeks of trial-and-error, I have finally got a torrent tracker site setup and running for Android ROM developers; a place for them to create and track a torrent for their ROMs.
Why use a torrent tracker like Bitdroid.org versus regular download links? Easy: better flow of download traffic, which equates to faster downloads!
Peer-2-Peer, or P2P, (torrents in this case) are better for high-flow traffic compared to normal HTTP (sites like Mediafire) or FTP. In HTTP or FTP, users can only download, and it's only from a single server. The more people downloading a file from a single server, the slower the download for everybody on that server requesting the same file. This is not the case for P2P connections. Every user that's downloading, downloads from another user. All of the users download are also uploading to other users, so the traffic is not coming from a single source. It is coming from many sources, alleviating slow downloads, enabling higher traffic. P2P is a much superior way to distribute large files (such as Android ROMs).
So where did this idea come from? After the release of several popular ROMs, I saw people complaining about slow download speeds, and having to upload to several different download mirrors for others to download at a fast pace again, until those became "clogged" for a while as well. P2P, as previously mentioned, would have alleviated this and reduced (or even eliminated) the need for several HTTP / FTP mirrors. HTTP download links could still be provided, but torrent links could also be provided to help alleviate high traffic, congested downloads.
P2P also allows tracking and stats of an individual download. Each file is tracked by the amount of seeders (people uploading), leechers (people downloading), and total downloads.
I've searched, and I couldn't find a dedicated torrent tracker for Android ROMs; I could only find trackers for general use, or other specific uses (movies, games, etc.), of which not all of these are completely safe due to concern of possible copyrighted content. With Bitdroid, only Android ROMs are allowed, and it is preferred that the original developer of the ROM uploads the file (or with permission from the developer, a 3rd-party user could upload the ROM). Since Android is open-source, there aren't any legal concerns of piracy and such due the open-source licensing of the Android OS.
For an added layer of "security" only an approved member group is allowed to upload files. You must be manually added to the group before being able to upload torrents, to try and further discourage potential piracy or unauthorized uploading of ROMs.
I currently have a splash-page setup, that links to the actual tracker, as well as a forum (work-in-progress).
If you're a developer or know a developer, please sign up on the torrent tracker and/or forum and I can get you setup to upload your torrents, and don't forget to spread the word!
If you have any questions or comments, please either post here or on the website! Come and check it out!
Note: I have permission from YZ to post this.
Bump. Got mixed reviews in the Rezound forum about this; not much response from Dev's yet (which is what I would like the opinion of as well).
I think this is awesome!

The idea is good, however i think having a ratio system on the site will do it more harm than good.
Unless you download the rom soon after its uploaded your probably going to struggle to seed it back, especially if its from a developer who updates the rom every couple of days. I think its very unlikely someone would download the older version once the next build is out.
Wow, my site made the front page news! Awesome .

Worry not, ratio is not a concern (but sharing what you download always looks good ).
