instant messenging question - Non-Touchscreen Windows Mobile Other

I am currently running wm6 and am looking for an aim messenger. I do not have a data plan but I do have unlimited text messages. Since the agile messenger uses data, would I rack up a huge bill using data or can i have it use my text messages instead? I am just a little confused about using data vs. sms. Also, does agile messenger work with WiFi? Thanks for the help!

1. Most messengers use data. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=323654 -, making sure you follow the links back to the PPC article.
I don't know of a specific Smartphone version of any IM app to support SMS messages - as opposed to the PPC platform. I may be wrong, though.
2. are you really sure using data is THAT expensive? 10-20 kbytes an hour? That's most these IM apps use.

Parling? Text Charges?

I just got my phone about a month and was looking at my first bill and saw that there was 11 dollars worth of text messages on it and i have never received a text or sent one. I do however use parlingo, but i was using beejive, do either of these programs use text messaging? Or could it be that i have email setup on my phone inside the tf3d tab?
ims count against texts
All IMS? I thought that there are programs that strictly use the nets bandwidth instead of ims services..? Does anyone know of such apps?
IM+ uses the internet and the IMs don't count as text messages.
Palringo does not count as text messages; it relies entirely on your data connection. The default instant messaging program that comes with the AT&T stock ROM is the one that uses text messages.
I have never used BeeJive, but it seems to be that most third-party instant messaging programs rely on data. Palringo gets my vote in any case. The functionality is good and it's free.
Other than that, I don't know why you would be getting charged. The E-mail tab definitely does not use texts: it is just a fancy and somewhat inefficient way to display your inbox(es) from Pocket Outlook. Your bill should display the phone number of every incoming/outgoing text, if that helps you track down the problem. You may need to request a "comprehensive" bill or whatever it is, since AT&T started mailing super-condensed bills after the iPhone data fiasco.
I was using Beejive and noticed that chats sent trhough it were being counted as text messages. However, I now use Parlingo and that is not the case. Parlingo FTW!

Does MSN Live Messenger use internet or SMS?

Greetings,
When I purchased my ADP1 for here in Australia I was disappointed at first that the IM client did not come with MSN/Windows Live Messenger like it's T-Mobile G1 bretheren. But I was less upset when I read that the MSN client actually sends SMS's instead of using the internet. Unfortunately I can't find any post confirming/denying this!?
Can someone please confirm this if it is true? Because the JFv1.41 with RC33 installed on my ADP1 has it available under IM, and although somewhat slow to load up (I do have many contacts) it looks/feels as though its on the internet... I am still paranoid I will end up with a bill for thousands of dollars due to SMS's overseas to T-Mobile.
Cheers
Leon
PS. And for that matter can someone also confirm AIM and Yahoo! is not sending via SMS but rather internet? It may seem silly, but peace of mind for many I'm sure.
- bump -
here is the answer...
from how I get charged, i honestly can see that it is BOTH text message and data because u need data/internet to access those messenger services and each message u enter in msn live or aim counts as a text message.
thankfully for me, i have family unlimited texting and internet/data plan for my phone... but those messenger usually lags unless u are on 3G or some better connection.
Is that for RC30 and RC8 or just RC30? I thought it just used data.

The Y! and AIM apps have always been through SMS on TMo builds for all of their phones. I've heard conflicting reports about MSN though but I would put money on the bulk of it being through SMS. Honestly though, IM through SMS is terrible and has been for years. It's laggy, never up to date and loves to double and triple sends messages. It's the price you pay for not having a data plan.
I know palringo is working on a android app. it is in beta now, they use data only.

Joking aside they do have a solid product but at this point I'm just tired of waiting indefinitely. Although, as a G1 owner I should be used to this by now.
Who cares, you should have unlimited data and messaging when using the G1 anyways.

Do you know anything about Australian cellular providers or the OP? No? I didn't think so. If you have nothing to add then move on without brain vomiting on the Post button.
Do I get that right: Every IM messenger from market sends out sms instead of data messages as it normally should? So Hello AIM, Membo IM etc. too?
no the g1 built in IM program uses SMS. Hello AIM uses the internet connection.
Oh, thank god. I was confused by this "The Y! and AIM apps have always been through SMS on TMo builds for all of their phones"....
Thx!

with the g1 plan you get unlimited data, and I think 400 messaging. Or people like myself who dont use the g1 plan have unlimited data, and no messaging but still use t-mobile.
I'm on JF 1.41 RC8 and I just used my prepaid sim in my G1 and chatted on msn for a bit then sent 1 text messages afterwards.
It only deducted the credit for my 1 sms afterwards so I'm fairly confident the IM app (at least Live Messenger) just uses data.
You can use all messengers (aol, icq, msn etc) through standard gtalk application. Just configure jabber transport from other network to gtalk server. Instructions can be googled easily (here an example: http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/general-other-im-news/33739-connect-google-talk-aim-msn-yahoo.html)
Live Messenger Problem
Running the latest JesusFreke RC8 update, with the extra IM clients built into it, and I am receiving the following error when I try to sign into Live Messenger:
Unable to sign into the MSN service. Please try again later.
(Detail: Sorry, the phone number cannot be read from your sim card. Please contact your operator for help).
I have the phone on a T-Mobile contract, and I ported my number over from another network when I got the phone.
Any ideas on what could cause this problem?
Someone on another forum said they could only get live messenger to work while on wifi. Dont know if that helps.
Are you using the stock im apps? They use sms texts to send not data. This might be the problem you are having.
Yes, I am using the stock IM apps. Are there better alternatives?

SMS utility suggestions?(No Data Plan)

Hey everyone, I have unlimited texting but no data plan, So im going to try and find all the useful utilities that use sms, especially the ones that can replace something that would normally use data.(ie Facebook Mobile text vs Facebook Mobile App which uses data)
I think I got my point across, hopefully.
heres a list of things im currently using:
-ESPN Mobile Alerts
-Facebook Mobile Texts
-Cha-Cha
-Google Search
-Paypal
Anyone have some more utilities that use SMS only?

Why no MMS messenger on fuze?

My samsung a727 has mms (aim yahoo msn) messaging it actually uses data but charges by mms why can't I do that with my fuze? I have unlimited mms but not data.
there is a chat program that is mms based. I believe you'll have to download the specific ATT one, but it is there...
WTF is mms ? sort of multi-protocol chat clients ? WM has a lot of such software. fring, or palaringo - for example.

Sorry for the confusion MMS is multi media messaging with my att service. It includes unlimited texting(picture, video) but no data, it also allows phones with mms versions aim yahoo and msn to be installed without using data. Though technically it does as does picture and video sending, it charges you accordingly or in this case doesn't since I have unlimited. Sadly the mobile apps from the official aol msn or yahoo site only support data I was hoping to find one like already installed on my a727 which lets me choose just mms for sending.
check if someone has a dump of all the roms from an att phone. that or if you can get your hands on the original rom, then you should be able to use the messengers with mms.

Aim / msn

Coming from the nexus one, i noticed that there are now aim and msn messager sync options. Does anyone know if the stand alone instant messaging client uses push or not?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
I believe the built-in IM client uses SMS, so it should be near instant. Be careful if you don't have unlimited texts on your plan.

Maybe on the older VZW phones... but why would it use SMS when it should be using data on a smart phone?
Granted, I just use Meebo and never set up those accounts.

I can't answer the question as to why, but I'm 99% positive the built-in app uses SMS. Whenever you sign up it shows some sort of message that it will use your SMS.
Actually if you have an unlimited SMS plan, it's not a bad idea. You get near-instant IM notification pretty much anywhere you have a 1X signal, don't have to worry about a background service running and draining extra battery, etc.
