Does anyone have the OZ instant messenger cab that comes with the AT&T Tilt?? after i flashed Dutty's rom i need to reinstall...thanks!
I must not be looking in the right spot either as I haven't been able to find it either. Maybe its not that popular.
would the 8525 cab work on the 8925??
I don't see why not. You know where one is for the 8525?

Why would you even want to use this program? It's charging against your SMS, rather than your data plan!

Hi there.
I don't have a texting plan, but would like to be able to sign on AIM and IM my friends.
However, I am worried that if the wi-fi gets cut off, the message will be sent as a text message and I would be charged.
Do you guys know any clients that do use only data?
Thank you!

AFAIK, the only IM clinet that uses SMS is OZ. All the others use data. For me, Jivetalk gets my vote followed by Slick.

Simple question I just want to make sure I don't get extra charges for teathering to my laptop every once in a while when the laptop would be easier.
not unless you call them and tell them

of course they can. the real question is do they really care?! i remember a thread with one person touting something like 50GB of use in a single month...
so they really wont care if I use my phone as a wireless hot spot for temporary usage for like email or playing online with my PSP or something...awesome. Thanks

They can probably tell when your usage jumps up like that, but thats it.
50gbs? Thats nothing, I average 2~3 sometimes 5 gbs a day, and I try to take it easy when I tether

Sometimes I use over 15GB/mo. just on my phone. They probably don't care. I read that with WiMax they're not even going to have a bandwidth limit, so you can download and tether to your heart's content. I'm definitely looking forward to that.
Lol, I'm pretty sure 50GB was the guy who was considered the lightweight. I'm almost positive I read a guy using over 100GB, and Sprint didn't do anything. That kind of stuff just makes me laugh.

You're lucky you get WiMax already.... I don't live in a city, so regular 3g for me..... They also can't tell if you tether UNLESS you use built-in MNS.

MNS is Mobile Network Sharing. Internet Sharing on fresh 2.0.
They can tell if you tether with that. On wireless tether, it just looks like normal data usage.

I have used my Hero Tethered to my Laptop *thus giving it internet access.
then through the LAN port on the laptop supply internet access to my 360 which I use to play MW2
I used 15GB in 1 night sprint never said anything.

I believe it signals your carrier or goes through a different set of ports. Either way, I tried this on a 1.5 rom and my phone wouldn't connect to EVDOs for an hour. Scary.

I have been testing different IM apps, but all of them have some issue that makes them less than Ideal.
In actuality, the old stock IM app from the G1 always worked best for me. It was reliable, didn't disconnect constantly, and didn't seem to kill the battery as fast.
Is there anything like that, or a mod'ed version that will work on the Nexus?
I've searched for and apk, and asked over in the general section, with no luck.
Enomther's rom comes with it.

It works well, but I can not change the notifications; and the sound is based on the media volume for some reason. Plus it can not use the proper names for yahoo contacts.
Well I pulled the IM apk from the ROM and it installed fine, but it will not sign on. It force closes when you try to sign on, though still remains running on the screen, and you can interact with the program.
Guess it would need Mod'ed to work on non-root, or maybe pushed to the system partition. Can't push with locked bootloader, so would need it to be Mod'ed.
Any devs out there know if this app needs to be in the system partition?

Another reason I want the stock IM app. It uses sms to work, so after the initial login, there is no or next to no data use; being that sms is a push type service, it does not need to poll for new IMs.
I posted this in the dev section for a reason, but they moved it... ah well. Maybe a dev will pop in here and give it a shot.
i did an im.apk search here and found the original and have been running it for a while now.messenger doesnt always want to sign in but yahoo works fine

Yes, but I have an unlimited plan, so I can send as many as I want.
And SMS are the biggest money makers for these companies. A recent study showed that the cost to actually send an SMS is zero. The only costs the companies have is the cost of setting up the software needed to operate the SMS functions in their systems and the cost of some servers and storage needed to hold the data as it is being sent to users (like if you send a SMS to someone without signal, they must store the info until it can be sent, and its only a few kb) I think the costs of the setup was recouped within a few months and now its pretty much all profit. Sly dogs they are (some places charge $0.25 per SMS out of plan)
Sorry had to rant...
Ouch. Thought I'd be able to use this wonderful sounding app that you've been talking about but I don't have an unlimited sms plan lol.
SMS tends to be my main form of communication on the phone, so I got the unlimited plan. The tmobile everything plus plans are not that bad price wise; more so when you don't get unlimited airtime as well. I don't need a lot of airtime because the people I talk to most just use SMS.
I'm thinking the new radio in 2.2 is not letting the IM app work properly.
Videotron just released their 3G network in Quebec and it appears as if they'll have an Illico app that goes with their smartphones.
If anyone gets the N1 from them, PLEASE rip the app.
Thanks!
are you sure videotron are offering the N1?
Or did you mean if anyone is going to use their N1 on Videotron's network?

That also depends on how many services you have with them. It's that price if you have all 3 services, $42.50 if you have 2 services and so on.
Still waiting for someone to rip this!

I doubt they will allow access from outside their own network to use it.
If you need to access to your ilico or any other source on your system use a slingbox.
you can get one for under 300$ and listen to any tv show on the road (if you have a good data plan) their app is great as well! and no monthly fee..
P.s. if you check future shop they are way too expensive...

I'm coming from IOS and I didn't expect this to be a problem at all. Whenever I send or recieve a video is so compressed that you can barley see what's going on. I don't hear much about this. Are android users pretending this isn't an issue?

Although iMessage handles SMS for iPhones (that's why you can still get texts from people without iPhones), iMessage doesn't use MMS (well, it can, but between iMessage clients, it doesn't). It uses your cellular data or wifi. MMS is different, and has limitations. It has nothing to do with Android.
You're perfectly free to use a different messenger service on Android that doesn't have MMS limitations, but of course the receiving party also has to use that app.
There's no fix to this with being rooted?

Take your pick of any of them. The issue with doing it with mms is that carriers put limits on them. Like ATT has a 600kb limit, I think T-mobile has like 1 mb. You could use things like whatsapp or others.

Most likely not. I am the same way and now no longer send video over mms. Many people are slowly moving over to things like whatsapp
Most Android users simply don't use MMS. Who would they, when apps like Whatsapp offer a free alternative?
Mind you, Whatsapp also downscales images and videos.

Because in the US we get unlimited messaging and limited data. Data plans in the states are limited so its cheaper to use mms then it is for apps like whatsapp. Not o mention with facebook buying whats app many avoid it now.

We get unlimited messaging, too. But MMS services here require data to send and retrieve. We don't have unlimited data either. 10GB is the largest plan, and it costs about 70 euro a month.
There hasn't actually been that much of a decline in Whatsapp users. There was at first, but most went back to Whatsapp due to the lack of decent, large alternatives and the fact that 80% doesn't bother with privacy when it requires effort.

It uses data here to but it's included in the SMS package. The average data plan on non contract devices here is like 2gb before they throttle you. Then data becomes almost unusable. You can get bigger limits with contracts but then you pay a stupid amount.
