Modified IM app - Nexus One Themes and Apps

I have been testing different IM apps, but all of them have some issue that makes them less than Ideal.
In actuality, the old stock IM app from the G1 always worked best for me. It was reliable, didn't disconnect constantly, and didn't seem to kill the battery as fast.
Is there anything like that, or a mod'ed version that will work on the Nexus?
I've searched for and apk, and asked over in the general section, with no luck.

Enomther's rom comes with it.

I will see if I can pull it out of the ROM and install... I'm still stock ATM, I may root soon though.

It works well, but I can not change the notifications; and the sound is based on the media volume for some reason. Plus it can not use the proper names for yahoo contacts.

Well I pulled the IM apk from the ROM and it installed fine, but it will not sign on. It force closes when you try to sign on, though still remains running on the screen, and you can interact with the program.
Guess it would need Mod'ed to work on non-root, or maybe pushed to the system partition. Can't push with locked bootloader, so would need it to be Mod'ed.
Any devs out there know if this app needs to be in the system partition?

Another reason I want the stock IM app. It uses sms to work, so after the initial login, there is no or next to no data use; being that sms is a push type service, it does not need to poll for new IMs.
I posted this in the dev section for a reason, but they moved it... ah well. Maybe a dev will pop in here and give it a shot.

i did an im.apk search here and found the original and have been running it for a while now.messenger doesnt always want to sign in but yahoo works fine

since it is based on SMS, you must be charged for SMS by your telco right?

Yes, but I have an unlimited plan, so I can send as many as I want.
And SMS are the biggest money makers for these companies. A recent study showed that the cost to actually send an SMS is zero. The only costs the companies have is the cost of setting up the software needed to operate the SMS functions in their systems and the cost of some servers and storage needed to hold the data as it is being sent to users (like if you send a SMS to someone without signal, they must store the info until it can be sent, and its only a few kb) I think the costs of the setup was recouped within a few months and now its pretty much all profit. Sly dogs they are (some places charge $0.25 per SMS out of plan)
Sorry had to rant...

Ouch. Thought I'd be able to use this wonderful sounding app that you've been talking about but I don't have an unlimited sms plan lol.

SMS tends to be my main form of communication on the phone, so I got the unlimited plan. The tmobile everything plus plans are not that bad price wise; more so when you don't get unlimited airtime as well. I don't need a lot of airtime because the people I talk to most just use SMS.

I'm thinking the new radio in 2.2 is not letting the IM app work properly.

Which Magic Rom-Build do you use on G1? H or G?

I´m very doubtful, which release i should take. in the "porting-thread", it´s about fifty-fifty, isn´t it??
Do the Google one. The HTC one (for me) wouldn't do EDGE or 3G. I'm using the Google build right now with no problems at all
Neither really, but leaning more to HTC because of exchange. I honestly just don't want to set my phone up again. Takes forever.

Minker, are you even able to get the Exchange sync working? Mine keeps saying Processing and never stops until I get a Force Close.
I'm using 5.0.2.H Exchange and Google sync work great on the same time on it for me.
Yup, worked for me on Saturday. Sent myself an e-mail and everything.

I'm on 5.0.1H ZH (due to the fact that it's pointless to have Chinese support and not the fonts). What was changed in 5.0.2H to get Exchange working?
the Exchange client is now saying 'Synchronizing Email'... will watch and see what happens
UPDATE : IT WORKS!
I'm running g, I tried h, but h is still a little too buggy for me, plus all the chinese stuff gets in the way, and I couldn't get the soft keyboard to work.

G does not have the HTC Exchange sync if I'm not mistaken.
You're correct. G does not have Exchange Sync
I just had over 200 contacts duplicated in my G1 as they were on my Exchange and my Gmail, and now I have no way of getting rid of the duplicates. Looks like I'm going to have to clear out all data (reflash) and start from scratch
I'm loving 5.0G. The only problems with it that bother me are the slow and often nonfunctional autorotate, and of course the myriad of applications that don't work properly (or at all) anymore.
Anyone that has exchange/activesync working in 5.0.xH builds mind helping me get mine working?
I keep trying to get it to work but I keep getting "Authentication Failed. Please verify username and/or password."
I can get TouchDown to work no problems but one thing I noticed is that TouchDown has an option for Exchange 2003 (which I have to check for TouchDown to work) but the Exchange/ActiveSync in 5.0.xH does not. Anyone know how to set the Exchange/ActiveSync to use Exchange2003 or know what I'm doing wrong?
Please help.
Thanks
kevin

I noticed a lot of those. But I'm wondering if these are apps that will be broken in the new release and require patches by their developers. That isn't all to uncommon when it comes to OS updates.
I noticed apps dealing with the screen brightness (flashlight, useful switches[flashlight mode], power manager, etc) tend to Force Close.
im luvin it!!!
i just found out about the haykuro releases yesterday... after a lot of reading i went for the 5.0.2H version because of the supposed prettyness of graphics and such. i got to say.. im loving it. i feel better and better that i bought this phone over the diamond, its soo much more exciting i guess haha. i have had no problems so far, other than some apps not working. everyone should get the overclock app from the market...
Yes the H is a lot prettier.

There was an issue with DXtop not working on the new firmware, but they released an update to fix it. Hopefully all the affected developers will update their apps when Google releases a final version of this: http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2009/04/getting-ready-for-android-15.html
For those having problems setting up exchange, try doing it over wifi ( if you are on Edge network )
After much reading and allot of personal testing, i went with H. It wasnt about the graphics being better. It was more about features. I like the camera and camcorder. Plus the overall feel to me is just right. I would say to anyone on the fence, just test both for 24 hours each and see what one you prefer. Thats what i did and i am MORE than happy. Haykuro is the man. He and his cohorts are doing a tremendous job with this project. I anxiously look forward to the future and cant wait to see whats next.

[Reason] Reason for unexpected high data usage: one possible reason

For most folks here (mostly new ones) who don't realize the splurge in data usage out of the blue, here's one possible reason:
Speed Test app
Based on the network speeds, each test could take as much as 20+ MB.

Omgosh I've noticed, I do it every night lol and I get about 8mb. I wonder if the speed is higher, a higher amount of data being passed is raised.
never thought about that... explains a lot!
I've always avoided SpeedTest like the plague, since I assumed it ate a lot of data. Particularly a problem for me on my GoPhone plan.
Another problem app is the stock email app. It would eat about 20MB per day with my Exchange account set up. Even if I never opened the app once. Downloaded Moxier Mail, and everything is under control. Annoying that Moxier doesn't integrate with the stock Calendar, though.

Yes. The faster speeds you get, the higher the data passed.

I used to use Moxie Mail but it was killing my battery to I installed Enhanced Email from the market. It is by far the best Exchange email client out there. The dev is very good with support too. I paid for it because it works so well. There is another app you have to install if you use Enhanced Email to take care of an Android issue with it integrating with the contacts. The app is free and you can find more info on the Enhanced Email forum on his website. I highly recommend this app to anyone needing a solid exchange mail client.

I like to keep my data usage on tab with the *3282# code. If you're on Att it sends you a text of how much of your data you've used and how many texts have been sent on your plan.

Yes. It is an often overlooked culprit..!! About 5-10 tests a day, with speeds over ~5 Mbps, would eat through your 200 MB quota in less than a week.

Last time I tried Enhanced Email, it didn't support Exchange Web Services(Exchange 2010) which has replaced WebDAV so it wouldn't login via the native methods that would provide RPC over HTTP. I believe WebDAV has been deprecated.

Stolen Nexus S

In July 2011, my Nexus S was stolen. I went to the police but they said they probably couldn't recover the device. So I just kinda let it go.
Well, a few weeks ago I found out the the phone was still connected to my Market account. This provides a bit of a security concern because I've got my credit card on my market account too, but they haven't bought anything. Just for fun, I decided to download and install Plan B to the phone, and within a few hours, I got four emails of the phone's location within 15 meters. Well, I didn't have time to bring that to the police, and that was eleven days ago. So I have a few questions:
1. I want to be able to get a more recent location because I'm afraid the police will say the location is too many days old. I know you can text "locate" or whatever to the phone but it's not my number anymore. (I know this because on my market account it says it's an AT&T phone whereas I'm on T-Mobile.)
2. Is there any way at all to remote remove the app and re install it?
3. Is there another app similar to Plan B that I can do the same thing?
4. Is there anything else I can do?
-Matthew
That really sucks. I know Lookout had an option on their site to collect the location through the internet, no phone number required. Don’t know if it's 100% sure, but it's worth a shot. Really hope you get your phone back. Good luck!

You should be able to login to your Google voice account and see which number it now forwards to. Assuming you had it on the phone and they did set it up. If not you can just text to your Google voice number and it should go through.
I don't have Voice to forward to any phone. :/ Darnit!
Hang on. You used Plan B, you got the location of your missing phone... and then did NOTHING?

Nexus 5 on no data / low data plan.

Anyone here use their Nexus 5 on a prepaid cellphone plan that has no data or low data?
I am thinking about switching over to h2o's Unlimited Talk, Text and 500mb plan to save money and become less dependent on my cell phone. I find myself using about 5 GBS a month on straight talk but its nothing productive, just downloading the latest roms or downloading an app only to delete a few minutes later or checking facebook. I think I could get by fine just using wifi and then the 500MB to check email or use my GPS.
Thoughts?

Like you download an app just to see or to test, you can download a rom and flash it to test, right?
That being said, for the OP, not sure a low data plan will make you less "dependent" (maybe good for money), if you have access to wifi? You can always download all the last roms via wifi
It will depend of your real use apart downloading rom, maybe it will be enough with only GPS (again it depends the frequency of use, GPS can be a huge consumer of data ) and email...

I mean dependent in terms of using the phone when I am out in about in public where wifi isnt available. I have no guilt about using my phone when I am sitting at home on the couch watching TV but it will deter the urge to browse the web when I am out with friends or something.

Telling someone they need to find a hobby usually implies that you think someone doesn't have a life.
PS it takes literally 5 minutes to download and flash the latest nightly of cyanogemod. I am not downloading a miillion different roms each month. Just staying up to date.
edit: also and saying "no offense" before saying something offensive isn't a hall pass to say something rude.
What's the issue here "Nexus 5 on no data / low data plan." or hobbies.....let's end the hobby discussion. Thanks
Only issue I can think of is that most of the Google Now voice commands seem to require an internet connection to work.

I am also on a limited data plan (400mb /mo) and find it kind of limiting. What i use is DS battery saver which turns off your data while your screen is off and turns it on every 30/45/60min for updates. It saves me some data and some battery so it's a win/win for me. I tend to limit my data navigation to mail/facebook and messaging apps and keep the cat gifs/videos for wifi/pc.
Another app you can try is onovo extend (it compresses the internet traffic trough their servers) but i found it a bit fiddly (never know if it's working or not and need to check it constantly) and i suspect it interferes with some apps (had a problem with my maps app but dont quote me on that).
Opera browser also compresses traffic for reduced data use.
Other than this, only your common sense and self control can bring your data use down. Being prepaid can't you buy more data anytime if you need it ?

I don't download much but still using 2gb a month - maybe go for 3 gig and see how that goes? 500mb is nothing nowadays.
I think unless you actually turn the data off, you'd struggle to stay under a 500GB a month allowance. Having seen what mine does on a day when I Fine really use it, id be concerned. You'd definitely need to tweak your sync settings and/or turn off data. Possibily even use opera browser or similar to compress your web pages.
Managing that plan sounds like too much of a chore

I have a voice and text only plan using WiFi when I need the type of downloads you describe. If I want to watch videos or listen to Music I carry a Meenova OTG micoSD card reader (check the N5 accessories section) and preload the files I need. I consider most of the data plans to be a huge consumer ripoff and am not willing not shell out the bucks for a minor convenience. My comments are definitely personal choice and there are so many WiFi hot spots around the impact of not always having Internet access hasn't hit me yet.

I think this comes down to region too (pricing I mean).
In the UK you can get 200 minutes, 5000 texts and truly unlimited data for £12.90 a month (sim only). £15.90 if you want 600 minutes.

Why do you have to download ROMs and apps over 3G? Don't you have wireless at home?
I can easily survive a month with 500MB, while checking my e-mail a few times a day (about 10 e-mails over 5 syncs), checking a few tens of articles over feedly and reading at least 5-10 of them, playing 8 Ball Pool (by Miniclip) at least on hour, using Waze for at least half an hour and other occasional searches. I only install apps over 3G on rare occasions (once a week at most), and when I cannot wait until I get home. And sometimes I'm wondering how could I wisely use more data, not to pile it up at the end of the month.
But that's just me...
Both me and my wife manage fine on a 250mb monthly plan. Over 3G we only need the odd update for the weather app and the usual Whatsapp photos and videos, from other family members. Whilst the photos and vids do consume most of that meagre allowance it still works out fine. The videos will get downloaded when at home and using the wi-fi connection.
Knowing that we are "restricted" on a tight data plan (but managing fine) it does tend to discipline me to no longer bother about using the phone more "frivolously", in terms of data usage, and I suppose when I'm at home I'll use my tablet or PC, much bigger screens etc.
Neither of us feel restricted in our use, and it works out much cheaper, but it does focus the attention away from the phone and the habitual data usage which was neither important nor needed.

Huawei's decision to use its own memory manager....

Ok, so this was a huge problem on the Mediapad X1. Where huawei's memory manager kills apps in the background. Why do we need task killers today Huawei? Please stop
On the Mediapad X1 there were a bunch of apps like Google Hangouts that would get killed even though you tell it not to get killed via "Protected Apps", having your texting app not run in the background is bad as you can imagine. So now I have an X2 and it seems like this Protected App thing actually works better, however I noticed today that the bluetooth services were getting killed in the background as it would not pair with my car until I turned on the screen. Because these are built in services you can't "Protect" them.
Just posting this here so hopefully Huawei can see it and fix it
But seriously, they should just use the memory manager built into android and not try to monkey around with, we don't need task killers any more.

So your texting app is working fine without any android-genius tweaks required? What app are you using? I NEED that!

I am on an X2 now and yes, it appears to be working so far (Using SimplyText), I've only had the phone for 2 days however so I am still testing, but this was the main reason I almost didn't buy and X2 because of apps shutting down all the time on my X1 in the background.
What tweaks are normally required?

I have had Textra recommended to me as a work-around for MMS texting glitches. I am used to that now and will try it but if I have problems I will try your app. By tweaks I just meant that so much of what most of you do is not what a "regular" cell phone user would know. I had no idea there were memory manager things I might need to address. (I haven't done that before). That is why I am here. To learn about new things and to be prepared as much as possible for when (at this point it is "if") my 702L gets here!

You have to go into startup manager and check each app, protected apps and trust each application, add it to startup, and in permission manager you have to trust each application. I agree though, I wish this didn't exist as there's no need for it. If you're rooted you can take it out but you'll lose the Do Not Disturb mode as it is baked into it.

I was rooted on the X1 and getting rid of the Power Manager still made stuff die in the background, it was pretty irritating. So far with the X2 it mostly works. As far as I can tell only bluetooth dies (Which I can't add to any of those apps as its a system app)
The X2 is such a better phone than the X1. I hope Huawei keeps on top of bug fixes. With a generic android memory manager this phone would be truly awesome.

Thanks for the help, aj... just something else I have learned. I learn something new every day! Now if the shipper would only prove it has actually been shipped! Lol!

I got my X2 today from fashioncoconuts on eBay and everything is good. It even came unlocked. I'm liking these eBay sellers.
Edit: after I did a factory reset it said the bootloader was locked. Now when I use Google Maps it tells me I must update my Google Play Services. When I do my Google Account Disappears and my Play Store doesn't open. I'm beginning to dislike Huawei's implementation of their apps. Blocking certain apps from being installed is totally lame on Huawei's part. Now the waiting game begins for my unlock code. I'm giving them three days. If not both phones are going on eBay and I'm done with Huawei. Rant over.

Good Ole fashioncoconuts. They raised the price big time by the time I was trying to jump in and also told me when they answered my message that they were temporarily out of stock. You got a GREAT deal on that one! Worth the wait!

Yeah. They told me they shipped it out on the 5th and didn't until the 15th. Now I know why. They raised the price too right after I bought it. A lot of these eBay sellers jack the price up way too high. No one should pay more than $399 for it. I'm just glad it came already unlocked. It seems Huawei is no longer sending emails to people with the unlock codes anymore.
I use bluetooth in car, and it connects automatically without turing screen on. There must be some other issue.

Ok, this morning bluetooth connect up fine (I'm on B108)
But I noticed the Lux (screen brightness app) had stopped in the background.
Services shutting down in the background was a huge issue on the X1 and for the most part seems to work on the X2 but it seems some things still get killed in the background once in a while even though they are "Protected Apps"
I'll keep monitoring and see if I notice anything else...
