Hi there.
I don't have a texting plan, but would like to be able to sign on AIM and IM my friends.
However, I am worried that if the wi-fi gets cut off, the message will be sent as a text message and I would be charged.
Do you guys know any clients that do use only data?
Thank you!

AFAIK, the only IM clinet that uses SMS is OZ. All the others use data. For me, Jivetalk gets my vote followed by Slick.

Why would you even want to use this program? It's charging against your SMS, rather than your data plan!

I have been testing different IM apps, but all of them have some issue that makes them less than Ideal.
In actuality, the old stock IM app from the G1 always worked best for me. It was reliable, didn't disconnect constantly, and didn't seem to kill the battery as fast.
Is there anything like that, or a mod'ed version that will work on the Nexus?
I've searched for and apk, and asked over in the general section, with no luck.
Enomther's rom comes with it.

I will see if I can pull it out of the ROM and install... I'm still stock ATM, I may root soon though.

It works well, but I can not change the notifications; and the sound is based on the media volume for some reason. Plus it can not use the proper names for yahoo contacts.
Well I pulled the IM apk from the ROM and it installed fine, but it will not sign on. It force closes when you try to sign on, though still remains running on the screen, and you can interact with the program.
Guess it would need Mod'ed to work on non-root, or maybe pushed to the system partition. Can't push with locked bootloader, so would need it to be Mod'ed.
Any devs out there know if this app needs to be in the system partition?

Another reason I want the stock IM app. It uses sms to work, so after the initial login, there is no or next to no data use; being that sms is a push type service, it does not need to poll for new IMs.
I posted this in the dev section for a reason, but they moved it... ah well. Maybe a dev will pop in here and give it a shot.
i did an im.apk search here and found the original and have been running it for a while now.messenger doesnt always want to sign in but yahoo works fine

Yes, but I have an unlimited plan, so I can send as many as I want.
And SMS are the biggest money makers for these companies. A recent study showed that the cost to actually send an SMS is zero. The only costs the companies have is the cost of setting up the software needed to operate the SMS functions in their systems and the cost of some servers and storage needed to hold the data as it is being sent to users (like if you send a SMS to someone without signal, they must store the info until it can be sent, and its only a few kb) I think the costs of the setup was recouped within a few months and now its pretty much all profit. Sly dogs they are (some places charge $0.25 per SMS out of plan)
Sorry had to rant...
Ouch. Thought I'd be able to use this wonderful sounding app that you've been talking about but I don't have an unlimited sms plan lol.
SMS tends to be my main form of communication on the phone, so I got the unlimited plan. The tmobile everything plus plans are not that bad price wise; more so when you don't get unlimited airtime as well. I don't need a lot of airtime because the people I talk to most just use SMS.
I'm thinking the new radio in 2.2 is not letting the IM app work properly.
Hopefully someone can answer this question for me. I was thinking about getting a WP7 device with no cell service at all. I was going to use it as a zune/xbox live device only. My question is will it work with no service and using only Wi-Fi? I know an Android phone can be used as a Wi-Fi only device but a Blackberry cannot. I can't find anything about WP7.
Thanks.
You will be able to use it for everything besides calling & sms (although you could use things like google voice for sms over data). Zune, games, marketplace, pictures/videos/podcasts ect will all work fine.
Cool, does it need a SIM to activate upon startup? or is there no activation?
I didn't put a sim in when I first got the phone, and was able to do everything just fine, although I imagine you will need to sign in with your live ID / hotmail account or whatever to use the zune marketplace.
The answer to your question is yes, you can use it as a Zune/XBox Live device only without cell service.
Regarding activation, there's not really an "activation" per se. The device just checks with Microsoft every time you try to use the Marketplace, Xbox Live, or any other live service that the device has a valid PVK. All WP7 devices have a PVK so there's no "activation" process... you just sign in to your Live ID using WiFi.
Awesome, that's what I wanted to hear.
Thanks guys.
Why would you want to do that? It is a phone so whats the point if not to use as a phone?

That is what my case it, and it is working great!
I have my Diamond that I carry near me when on the go, but mainly use my Focus for everything except calls. Doing this is saving me a lot of money (as I am a Sprint SERO user). But I am 99% sure that I will drop my Diamond once the Arrive comes out, even though I don't like the Arrive formfactor at all.

I have an Incredible on Verizon and would never want to use anything but Android for my phone. However, I love Zune and Xbox Live. What I really want is a Zune device with the same Xbox integration WP7 has. I just don't think it's ever going to happen. So, the only option would be to get a WP7 phone and use it in place of that.
That's my current use case as well for AT&T Focus. Works fine so far except WP7 doesn't connect ah-hoc wifi and I can't sharing internet to it with my WM phone.

Odd. On my Diamond I enable the data sharing hotspot and my Focus is able to connect. I did it a few weeks ago on vacation. It saved me from having to bring my laptop.
don't have a sim in mine never had one in it it works fine, its activated and full of apps. Im gonna later get one of those simple talk ones to try out in it. If they come out with a skype for wp7 may never get one for it. I'm loving it.
I went with the HTC Surround. I figured the extra 8gb and speaker would be nice over the Focus for what I am going to use it for. Thanks again everyone.

Opps. Just found it's working for me now. Maybe last time I didn't test enough. I am happy to have the powerful WM and fun WP7 working together now
I'm using a WP7 device without service too.
Is there anything similar to talkatone for WP7?
Also, when using GoVoice for Google Voice, it seems that every time the device is asleep, wifi turns off. So then I don't get text messages through Google Voice. Is there a way to leave wifi on?

I believe wi-fi stays on only if you're connected to AC power.
I just stumbled on an app called "Tablet Talk" and I love it so far...
I've been looking for something to use to send and received SMS from my TF and this app seems to fill the bill nicely.
It's fast; just as fast as sending messages on my phone itself. The interface is nice, and connnecting is a breeze...
Just letting everyone know in case they are in the market for an app like this.
yes great app. the dev is here also

I use it all the time. It has really been getting a workout since football season started. My son lives across the country and we have been wearing out the airwaves discussing the talent or lack thereof!
I particularly like it's ability to connect both via Bluetooth and Wireless.
Does this use Push for syncing messages?
I'm currently using SyncSMS, which does the job at a bare minimum of whats acceptable. Currently it does not support Push, and relies on preset sync-intervals or manual. Also, even tho it claims to use ~400kb storage, it hugs an entire 38mb (!!!). Quite critical on my quite crappy x8 phone.
If this is in any way smaller, and use Push, I'm all over it.
Edit: Gave it a quick spin (15 minutes refund policy.....). Seemed to be running constantly with icon in status bar (no Push?). Relied on IP address to connect, making it tedious to connect when changing WiFi networks. Shame I did not get a proper chance to see if having this app running 24/7 had any major impact on battery life. Un-installed/refunded for now.

Which is great when you want someone to use two different numbers to txt you through.
I kinda keep my cell and text separate from my GV account, so this app may be what I need.
Yes GV is great but that's beside the point of this thread
I bought the app Tablet talk and am loving it. Simple, easy, and so far not a single issue. It was well worth the $2.99 I paid for it. I probably would have paid up to $4.99 for it above that I would have gone with one of the other offerings.
I leave my tablet and SGS III connected via blue tooth and leave the wifi just for internet usage. The small size of the app is really a good thing as well, since I only have the 16GB edition.
I would highly recommend the app to anyone looking to send SMS from their tablet, using their current phone number. For me it keeps confusion down with my contacts.
Yeah, I use Tablet Talk a little.. ahem.. I have over 6000 text messages in the messaging thread to my Fiancée.. And I use it ALL the time. When I have to use my phone to send a text I start to get the hives. It is by far the app that I use the most on my tablet. I have kind of a low self esteem and she is a HOT Russian (previous model / previous gymnast) and I need to make sure she thinks about me every 5 minutes or so..BRB.... Yeah.. she's still there. ahem.
Anyway.. Really is a great app. When there was an issue with MMS which I found right away after an update the dev responded right away and sent me code to fix it the next day and quickly updated it for everyone.
I of course just got her a TF700 for Christmas and I need to somehow get something that works with her Iphone now. It's too bad TT doesn't have an iphone client.. That of course would be the bomb.
Great app.

Yes, love it.
Very good app. You can sync messages through by connecting through bluetooth "less battery then wifi", if they are on the same wifi network "aka home", or if you are on your phones wifi hotspot "aka using your phone for mobile internet"
You can also sync all messages from your phone to your tablet so you arnt out of your conversation. You can sync anytime. Dark theme to save battery.
It is relly nice to text on from your number walking around your house while your phone is charging
I'm now too using tablet talk mine came with a phone dialer too for Bluetooth usage tho

I had the LG v10 att version and I was able to text from the computer. Also it would send pics about 800kb which is a good size in my opinion. I switched over to the T-Mobile version to get root and. Now I'm wonder to get those features back.
No sure what APK I'm really asking for but I want to text from my computer via the att site and it'd be nice to send photos that are higher resolution.
My T-Mobile apps aren't able to do any of this anymore so I'm assuming this was an att thing.

Awesome! Unfortunately, most services like Pushbullet don't give you much for free, but it's worth it to pay the $30/yr in my opinion. Glad it helped!
