HTC Home - General Topics

Hi,
This is my first post here. Please excuse me if I post in the wrong section, or if this is already asked.
I am borrowing a brand new HTC TyTN II, and I see this have a nice new Today screen with a big digital clock, a link to favourite persons, etc.
I think this might be called HTC Home, because it dissapears if I uncheck this in the Today Items list.
Question is:
- Is this an application that can be downloaded somewhere and installed on othe HTC devices?
- Will this only work on WM6 devices, or also on my old HTC P3600 WM5 device?
- If this is not possible to download, but embedded in the ROM, is there any easy way to "extract" this from the device I borrow? (could this be a CAB file that is in some hidden area on the phone)
Could someone please help me with these questions, or refer me to some links where this have already been discussed

Thanks for your answer.
I have downloaded and tested that several "Helmi" versions works OK on both my semidefekt (no sound/camera due to the fact that I have ripped those out to use on another phone) I-mate Jamin (with QTEK ROM) and my HTC P3600.
Both the 3 tab and 6 tab versions worked. For my P3600 all features seemed to work. Great!
Only some more questions about this:
a) The link you gave me contained a lot of pages, and a lot of sub links to other posts and versions. In fact it seems that there is very many versions of this plugin lying around on your and other similar sites.
It would be very nice if this tool could be added in the CAB archives page with a new clean post that lists what is the newest and most current version, and what version is for what phone, as it is quite difficult to follow all these pages lying around in the forum (which also is the reason why I reply in this post rather than in one of the many other existing ones).
Would this be something you eminent persons would consider?
b) I tried both the Helmi 3/6 tab versions and the Kaiser 5 tab versions. None of the Kaiser versions worked on my Imate JAmin/P3600, but I assume this is because the Kaiser versions obviously is intended for a different type of phone (or maybe it is WM6 they are intended for?)
Is this true?
c) If not, do these versions have any features that the Helmi versions don't have?
d) I tried these versions of the "Helmi" editions:
- HtcHome6_WM5_comp_sdkcert.cab (with the extra SDK_CERT.cab),
- HTCHomeWM56Tab.cab
- HtcHome6_WM5_comp.cab
They all had slightly different file sizes, and contained a bit different number of files/reg keys. So my question is: What is the newest and most stable version? (which version should I use?)
e) Are there other versions than these that are newer/better for the above mentioned phones?
As you see, I got a bit confused about all these pages. I got it working, so that is great, but if someone would bother to clarify these issues, and maybe even make a sticky post or add it to the CAB vaults, that would be even more great!

I'd Like to Upgrade to the Latest ROM, I've a MDA Compact 2

Hi everyone!
This is my first post, so I hope I get this right!
I've a T-Mobile MDA Compact 2 that has the T-Mo. branded ROM (ROM Ver: 1.12.2.23 WWE; Radio Ver:01.12.20) and I'd like to upgrade this to the latest (I've seen 1.13...) generic ROM easily!
Please consider: I've searched hi and low through these forums for upgrade tutorials, and have tried them out, but many complicate things with Big Storage and Ext. ROM etc. I've tried using the MaUpgradeUt_noID software but, after it reads the device's details (it's current ROM ver. etc), ActiveSync (on the desktop) terminates and I get an error "Error 101: Connection Error"!
All I want is to rid my MDA of T-Mo.'s software!
Currently I've hacked the regestry to change the Dialpad to WM5's default, replaced the Carrierlogo.gif with a blank, etc.
Please, anyone, can you tell me what I'm doing wrong, and why I can't upgrade my ROM!
Note: I've tried to be as detailed as I can! I'm fairly fluent in these sorts of things, so don't be scared about getting techincal, though please explain each and every step, as I've never done this before!
Thanks!
There are no other ROMs for the MDA compact II. This phone is a 'Charmer' and all the other posts in this section are talking about the 'Magician' which although the two look the same they are very different on the inside. A generic ROM is unlikely in the future because so far T-Mobile are the only carrier to produce this phone and most likely no one else will be.
Okay, I'll stick with my hacks for now. Thanks for letting me know though!
you can remove all the branding quite easily. changing the startup logo and editing the extended rom gets rid of most of it and replacing some of the .dlls and graphics with generic ones from another wm5 will get you back to the standard intellipad and dialler with working smartdialling.
All that's allready done! I've just got to change the startup graphic, but I'm not in any urgency, as I rarely restart the device!
Thanks for your input though!

Uprade for dummies? A few newbie questions.

Okay, I'm absolutely new to the PDA-Dev stuff. I'm a normal desktop software developer and I only use the PDA's as a normal user ;-)
I have the german T-Mobile branded MDA Pro.
So here are my first questions:
1.) Here in the forums we have a few threads about WM6 on the
- WM6 kitchen release
- Jwrightmcps Crossbow
- Final ULTIMATE - No Bugs HTC Universal WM6 ROM
- Universal WM6 Professional Rom
So, on a first look this is oabsolutely verwhelming. What is the right choice? In other words: When wanting to upgrade, what is the most stable version?
2.) What is this AKU stuff that's mentioned in nearly every post? I can't find a clear explanation of what this really is.
3.) I want to upgrade in a legal way. Loosing support on my MDA is not the problem, but I want a legally licenced WM6 on my pda. So where can I get that?
Are there any other hints, tips & tricks you would suggest for starting with that?
I think you on the wrong forum man!
You need Microsoft website
The only legal version of WM is WM5.
reed this
http://www.xda-developers.com/modules.php?name=News&file=showarticle&threadid=294142
1) Really, the only 'stable' ROM is WM5, WM6 will have some problems, but they are getting better.
2) I actually haven't figrude that one out yet... I assume its the version number or something... never really been important.
3) Short answer you can't, long answewr talk to t-mobile.I'm not aware of any carrier releasing WM6 for the universal, but for a legal upgrade you'd have to get it from your carrire (and most likely have them do it)
Okay.. well.. then.. hrm.. just ignore point three.
Back to point 1.) I do not want a rock stable WM6 on my MDA Pro. But when it comes to different WM6 versions/distributions to choose from, I want the most stable of them. So which one is the one to go for?
To Point 2.) I thought about some version numbering too, but I'm not pretty sure about that. But when it's not really important, why making the difference? ;-)
Is video call important to you?
There is still no known stable Video Call on WM6 yet except for the Video Call Beta by Jwright.
I think there is only 2 known source (correct me if I am wrong) of WM6 for Universal floating around in many forums. The one by Helmi (older AKU) & the one by Ivan (newer AKU). The rest are just variants of this 2. With Plus & Minus features, some bug fix, etc.

There are 3 bases:
The "Old" base (helmi 0.1, midget 0.1[.1], JWright, etc)
Ivan's new ROM (Ivan V1,2,3)
Midget's new ROM (Midget 1.0, Ivan's customisation of Midget, PDAViet (Latest)
My recommendation (and I think this is the fourth, possibly fifth, time I've said this - grab all the ROMs that are stickied to the forum - and test them all. If you're concerned about stability during your tests then get a spare phone to use.
And if you're trully concerned about stability and legality - stick to your vendor's version of WM 5
PhoenixHawk:
I 'was' in the exact same position as you. I'm a software developer, have never upgraded a ROM before and all these "Crossbow", "WM6 Final", "WM6V3.??", "No Bugs", "Final", etc, etc, had me somewhat scratching my head.
In a total nutshell, I did the following:
1
Followed this guide : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...tion On How To Upgrade with Bootloader method
(i.e., downloaded WinRar, and "MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe")
2
Downloaded the first RAR file from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=305512
3
When part 2 had downloaded, I copied the "MaUGradeUt_noID.exe" into the "NOCID_RUU_flasher_xda-devs" directory which is from the extracted RAR file.
4
Copied the "nk.nbf" file from the "Uni_WM6_v3_Ivan" directory into the "NOCID_RUU_flasher_xda-devs" directory from the extracted RAR file.
5
Double-clicked "MaUGradeUt_noID.exe" in the "NOCID_RUU_flasher_xda-devs" directory.
6
Started to worry as the program flashed my ROM.
Some 10 minutes later I had a fully working, zero problem HTC Universal running what looks to be a rock-solid stable version of Windows Mobile 6.
Hope this messages, coming from someone who has never done anything like this before is both easy to follow, 'n00b proof' and proof that it can be done from someone with zero-experience.
I'm sure there's a load of pro's and con's in which ever ROM is downloaded, but I took the chance at what I thought would be an easy to follow option, read as much as possible and it seems to have paid off.
Hope this helps,
J

Your answer should be like above.
PhoenixHawk need the second part, not me.
I thought Midget's was derived from Ivan's, so I was wrong.
@J
You are right, once you get the first working, you can read on or try as many until you are happy with one.
I'll give it a try.
I don't have a spare phone, so my regular one will have to keep up with me ;-)
But first things first: Currently I have some problems getting my MDA Pro syncing with my Vista client. The mobile device center just won't recognize my pda when it's connected. And I can't start about thinking flashing the rom until that's not working... anyone a clue?

Take some advice (I didn't listen, thought I was better than everyone else and ending up bricking my phone everytime).
Do NOT use Vista. For the sake of an hour's additional work in either installing another harddrive or swapping it temporarily, do everything within an XP environment.
Trouble free.

I'm in need of some assistance

Hello, I'm new here.. actually the previous owner of the phone sent me here. Well in summary, I brought a HTC Tilt from someone and they had PDA Corner Ultimate with this on it (R 1.70.19.09 G25.83.40.02 h D 3. Abusalza). Now I have no clue what that all means but I like the phone. First off once I get the IE homepage and type anything in the search part, the website is tiny (unable to read). i tried adjusting the text size and still the same thing. Then it will not allow me to select what I'm searching for (i.e. search- yahoo messenger, bring up the site but I can not select it or go to the page). Next it started acting weird by putting 5s in the address bar (on its own). I've been looking throught this site, trying and hoping that I will find something to help. I may have bypast it (too tired now). Can someone help me figure this out? I also would like to flash WM6.5 on here. i read the tut for that but was wondering do I have to remove the stuff thats on here first? Thank you and feel free to ask me more about this.
Hello my friend.
First, read up a bit on your device, visit the xda wiki, search for tilt and do some reading before you do anything daft.
You arent ready to flash yet. Understand your device a bit and how it works, then when your ready have a play
Visit the wiki here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=TiltSpecificWikiPage
Have fun
I had to step away and take a break. No offence but I'm still lost. On the other hand I'm still reading up on this. i think i might just start from scratch. I'm looking inthe phone to see what programs like and post it on the thread where I can get a custom ROM.
the att tilt is the att variant of the htc kaiser (the only difference is the keyboard layout which may need to be fixed depending on the rom source.. you will just need to install a cab), check the kaiser rom section. As for a recommended 6.5 rom, its a person opinion, but i use anryls Roms.. and for you i would recommend the 21500 rev6 build (i have been having corruption problems with all the 21501 versions) To warn you though, 6.5 is not finished and there for not completly stable.... for example the camera does not work with htc menu enhancement (its a driver issue)
Like i said if you wanna look around for yourself sheck the kaiser rom section.
hope that helps,
Joel

Recieved a New (secondhand) HTC Cruise..

Hiya's, I found this site while looking up info on the HTC cruise as I have just received a hand-me-down Cruise from a friend (had a very old nokia..). This is a major upgrade for me (it has a 2 camera's unlike my nokia which has none). I am keen to get the most use from the phone as possible and at the moment it seems to be going ok but having read a couple of the forum messages it seems that there are various upgrades that can make it a better phone.
I have been accused of being a semi-ludite when it comes to using technology so would appreciate any advice on what can be upgraded as far as the operating system and other programs are concerned. I have used the CoPilot program this morning and think is is the greatest thing since individually sliced and packaged cheese..
The settings on the phone indicate it is ROM 1.26.710.1 WWE (date 12/17/2007), Radio Version 1.58.21.23 and Protocol Version 25.65.30.04H.
If any advice is forthcoming, please keep things as simple as possible or I will have to get one of my neighbors kids to come over and explain..
Cheers
Ian
Welcome to the wonderful world of a touchscreen windows mobile device.
Of course there are a lot of things you can improve, thousands of programs are waiting to be installed and so on.
IMHO the most important thing is: If you are satisfied with your current system DO NOT change it. If everything is running smooth there is no need to flash a new operating system or radio. If you notice slowdowns during using the device or if the radio in your area is not running perfect you should flash the latest upgrade from HTC. They are offering WM 6.1 (WM = windows mobile, the operating system) and a new radio. Its very easy to flash but you will loose all your data on the device.
If you don't like your today screen, you can check some replacements, Mobile Shell is one of it:
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/mobileshell
And if you like this shell you can change its look with upgrades like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3904948&postcount=2513
Of course you can flash one of the Roms created by one of the devs. You will find an overview here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=521961
But you should be aware that many of these roms are using stuff from other devices like Manilla, this might cause problems. And you have to be very careful if flash a self created rom, its not that easy like flashing an original HTC rom.
Last but not least you have to think about the way you want to use your device. If you just need a phone you need nothing else. If you want to read ebooks like wikipedia you need a reader and so on. Here you can find tons of programs for your device:
http://www.handango.com/homepage/Homepage.jsp?storeId=2218
You will also find a lot of freeware apps here:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/
And a very important thing is: Backup your device often if you are trying different applications, you are having a windows device
For a list of recommended software check my signature.
All are freeware except iGO, and easily found on this forums (or links from here lead to authors pages).
And welcome to Polaris owners club...
Thanks very much for the replies..
It seems to be going ok at the moment. I am not too sure whether it is slow or not (nothing to compare..) but opening an application only takes a couple of seconds so I am happy with that. I have been using it primarily as a phone (of course) but have been using the camera like mad. I even made one of my friends give me a video call..very cool...I have tried to use the voice commander application but it doesn't seem to want to do anything and eventually just says "Goodbye" and closes. I am going to look at the list of applications at some of the website that are list above and see what is available.
Cheers and thanks again..
IJ

[Q] Some files in provided links are unavailable...

I was looking through some of the Sense2.5 appearance tweaks threads, and almost all of the links to the cab files are dead ends!
I'm posting because my old TP2 died on me, which had WM6.1 and an older manila version. Now, my new TP2 has WM6.5 and Sense 2.5, and I was looking to tweak it out like I did with my old phone, but some of the apps I have don't work, and now I've run into all these dead links. I'm more specifically referring to removing the backgrounds from contacts, calander, etc, and things like that.
I looked through the "read first" threads, but could only locate the afformentioned dead links.
request in the thread...someone might be able to upload them again and provide mirror links !
I've actually managed to piece together most of the components from various places. Just took longer than I had hoped.
