I'd Like to Upgrade to the Latest ROM, I've a MDA Compact 2 - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Hi everyone!
This is my first post, so I hope I get this right!
I've a T-Mobile MDA Compact 2 that has the T-Mo. branded ROM (ROM Ver: 1.12.2.23 WWE; Radio Ver:01.12.20) and I'd like to upgrade this to the latest (I've seen 1.13...) generic ROM easily!
Please consider: I've searched hi and low through these forums for upgrade tutorials, and have tried them out, but many complicate things with Big Storage and Ext. ROM etc. I've tried using the MaUpgradeUt_noID software but, after it reads the device's details (it's current ROM ver. etc), ActiveSync (on the desktop) terminates and I get an error "Error 101: Connection Error"!
All I want is to rid my MDA of T-Mo.'s software!
Currently I've hacked the regestry to change the Dialpad to WM5's default, replaced the Carrierlogo.gif with a blank, etc.
Please, anyone, can you tell me what I'm doing wrong, and why I can't upgrade my ROM!
Note: I've tried to be as detailed as I can! I'm fairly fluent in these sorts of things, so don't be scared about getting techincal, though please explain each and every step, as I've never done this before!
Thanks!

There are no other ROMs for the MDA compact II. This phone is a 'Charmer' and all the other posts in this section are talking about the 'Magician' which although the two look the same they are very different on the inside. A generic ROM is unlikely in the future because so far T-Mobile are the only carrier to produce this phone and most likely no one else will be.

Okay, I'll stick with my hacks for now. Thanks for letting me know though!

you can remove all the branding quite easily. changing the startup logo and editing the extended rom gets rid of most of it and replacing some of the .dlls and graphics with generic ones from another wm5 will get you back to the standard intellipad and dialler with working smartdialling.

All that's allready done! I've just got to change the startup graphic, but I'm not in any urgency, as I rarely restart the device!
Thanks for your input though!

What's so great about WM6?

Hi,
While I am waiting for my MDA Pro to arrive, I have been reading a lot in the Universal section (have a BA myself).
May I ask for some valid reasons why someone would want to use homebrewed WM6 releases instead of official/customized WM5?
I do understand the fun it is to try out new things, but is it really worth it? I did not find many posts that would clear this question.
Thanks,
vma
WM6.0...
The new look and a lot faster device...
Is there any feature that won't be available with WM6, that did work fine in WM5?
Thanks,
vma
Video call isn't working yet.

The way I see it, WM6 may or may not work for you and may or may not do it for you. Try it. You can always go back to WM5. Most people don't.....
Well .... the simple answer is that I did a lot of searching and reading, and finally tried it out for myself.
I asked this very question a while ago right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1130569&postcount=88
And came to the follwowing conclusion:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1155497&postcount=89
In the conclusion, the thing about the Bluetooth Stack / Voice Command - it was actually Voice Command that was the problem and this issue was fixed in Jrwightmcps' 2.02.00 WWE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297256
Crossbow ONLY!
Tell you the truth... i see the new WM6 is better eye-catching GUI not to mention the enhancement in the functionality and other usability such as email related functions. I know that MS wont just upgrade for no obvious reason nor for desktop OS compatibility.
Yet i reckon i wont -never- go back to magento! Crossbow ONLY!
@nvatvani:
Indeed your posts where the only ones I read, that contained some usefull info about the subject.
No offense to all the other members of course!
I was simply wondering about what to do when my MDA Pro arrives: replace the German firmware with a WWE WM5 one or go straight ahead to WM6 without even looking at WM5.
Also, I had some problems with my Blue Angel, when I tried WM5 on it: it may have been a coincidence, but one day after the upgrade the screen went mad and totally messed up. Only 1 Hardreset in about 100 tries would bring it back to normal for some period of time and even reflashing it with WM5 or 2003SE would not make it work normal again. The screen would get messed up suddenly for no particular reason. At the end I had to send it in for repair, which was actually a good thing, as I complained about the loose stylo and bad working hardkeys, all within warranty. I got a new key-pcb, backside and they reflashed the device with 2003SE. I posted this issue in the BA forum, but got no usefull hint. This means I am a little scared of upgrading to unofficial releases.
Other than that, I have no problems with flashing, as I do that on my other hobby (satellite receivers) frequently, including JTAG-operations for repairing bricked devices. The same applies to games consoles. (Note: I do not sell or benefit commercially from that activity and my goal is not to get illegal software or TV - not that you guy's get the wrong idea about me).
Anyway, thanks for your replies!
Cheers,
vma
What Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2.0 has and Windows Mobile 6 (the cooked ones, having tried them all) doesn't have, according to my experiences:
1. Videocalling - at least not a proper one
2. Bluetooth Dial Up Networking (the DUN profile)
3. Wireless Modem (yet some WM6 ROM's have it, although without shortcut in the start menu)
4. Cyberon Voice Dial by default (some WM6 ROM's have it by default, others will need a 500kB CAB to activate it)
The reason why I went back to "good old" WM5 is mainly the reliability. Ok, the OS may be a bit slower here and there, but it has all the functionality (e.g. videocalls and Bluetooth DUN), and NEVER hangs. It just always works and that's what I desperately need right now.
---
The things Windows Mobile 6 has for me that 5.0 hasn't which I miss the most:
1. High resolution browsing in the normal Internet Explorer (I don't want to use alternatives)
2. HTML email support
3. The impressive speed of the OS
Applications like WM6's Windows Live and the superb Remote Desktop Client are also available for WM5, so I don't need to miss those, otherwise I sure would, and then I might have sticked with WM6.
The new sounds and GUI are great, but I don't really miss them, since that's not a true functional thing.
Having WM5 up and running again, without freezes and memory leaking and with full HTC Universal functionality, is enough for me to be happy with it and to stick with it. If there ever will be a ROM that actually ADDS Windows Mobile 6 on top of all of this (without a single registry tweak or CAB fix needed), then it's the time for me to upgrade again.
If such a ROM will ever see the daylight, since it won't be officially available for the Universal, I don't know. I think the HTC X7500 (Athena) will be there sooner (April 2007 over here), and that one will have a official WM6 upgrade for sure. That'll be my next one, so until then: WM5 for my Universal!
So far for my opinion.
why do I use WM6

To be honest, I used them all and later delteted them after 5 2 hours. They leak a lot, ram is at minimum and useless third party applications, and a lot fo thing sodn't really work or missing (I just want a vanill aone without 3rd party applications).
Except for one rom, Darkforce, it is fast and furious, and so far I have using it for two days; battery usage is good, and no leaks. However, no video calling, and no way to set com ports for bluetooth devices. any1 has this problem?
However, common to all ROMS, no video calling, old calculator, speed dial messed up (some work and some don't), wireless connection bubble missing (yes you can install a cab but I don't want to do that).
<Mind you, contrary to other reports, I never had any freezes with any rom.
The thing that attracts me is HTML in email, High resolution mode in explorer, better remote desktop connectivity.
So I thhink I am sticking with DarkForce ROM, so far so good.
Thx

Uprade for dummies? A few newbie questions.

Okay, I'm absolutely new to the PDA-Dev stuff. I'm a normal desktop software developer and I only use the PDA's as a normal user ;-)
I have the german T-Mobile branded MDA Pro.
So here are my first questions:
1.) Here in the forums we have a few threads about WM6 on the
- WM6 kitchen release
- Jwrightmcps Crossbow
- Final ULTIMATE - No Bugs HTC Universal WM6 ROM
- Universal WM6 Professional Rom
So, on a first look this is oabsolutely verwhelming. What is the right choice? In other words: When wanting to upgrade, what is the most stable version?
2.) What is this AKU stuff that's mentioned in nearly every post? I can't find a clear explanation of what this really is.
3.) I want to upgrade in a legal way. Loosing support on my MDA is not the problem, but I want a legally licenced WM6 on my pda. So where can I get that?
Are there any other hints, tips & tricks you would suggest for starting with that?
I think you on the wrong forum man!
You need Microsoft website
The only legal version of WM is WM5.
reed this
http://www.xda-developers.com/modules.php?name=News&file=showarticle&threadid=294142
1) Really, the only 'stable' ROM is WM5, WM6 will have some problems, but they are getting better.
2) I actually haven't figrude that one out yet... I assume its the version number or something... never really been important.
3) Short answer you can't, long answewr talk to t-mobile.I'm not aware of any carrier releasing WM6 for the universal, but for a legal upgrade you'd have to get it from your carrire (and most likely have them do it)
Okay.. well.. then.. hrm.. just ignore point three.
Back to point 1.) I do not want a rock stable WM6 on my MDA Pro. But when it comes to different WM6 versions/distributions to choose from, I want the most stable of them. So which one is the one to go for?
To Point 2.) I thought about some version numbering too, but I'm not pretty sure about that. But when it's not really important, why making the difference? ;-)
Is video call important to you?
There is still no known stable Video Call on WM6 yet except for the Video Call Beta by Jwright.
I think there is only 2 known source (correct me if I am wrong) of WM6 for Universal floating around in many forums. The one by Helmi (older AKU) & the one by Ivan (newer AKU). The rest are just variants of this 2. With Plus & Minus features, some bug fix, etc.

There are 3 bases:
The "Old" base (helmi 0.1, midget 0.1[.1], JWright, etc)
Ivan's new ROM (Ivan V1,2,3)
Midget's new ROM (Midget 1.0, Ivan's customisation of Midget, PDAViet (Latest)
My recommendation (and I think this is the fourth, possibly fifth, time I've said this - grab all the ROMs that are stickied to the forum - and test them all. If you're concerned about stability during your tests then get a spare phone to use.
And if you're trully concerned about stability and legality - stick to your vendor's version of WM 5
PhoenixHawk:
I 'was' in the exact same position as you. I'm a software developer, have never upgraded a ROM before and all these "Crossbow", "WM6 Final", "WM6V3.??", "No Bugs", "Final", etc, etc, had me somewhat scratching my head.
In a total nutshell, I did the following:
1
Followed this guide : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...tion On How To Upgrade with Bootloader method
(i.e., downloaded WinRar, and "MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe")
2
Downloaded the first RAR file from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=305512
3
When part 2 had downloaded, I copied the "MaUGradeUt_noID.exe" into the "NOCID_RUU_flasher_xda-devs" directory which is from the extracted RAR file.
4
Copied the "nk.nbf" file from the "Uni_WM6_v3_Ivan" directory into the "NOCID_RUU_flasher_xda-devs" directory from the extracted RAR file.
5
Double-clicked "MaUGradeUt_noID.exe" in the "NOCID_RUU_flasher_xda-devs" directory.
6
Started to worry as the program flashed my ROM.
Some 10 minutes later I had a fully working, zero problem HTC Universal running what looks to be a rock-solid stable version of Windows Mobile 6.
Hope this messages, coming from someone who has never done anything like this before is both easy to follow, 'n00b proof' and proof that it can be done from someone with zero-experience.
I'm sure there's a load of pro's and con's in which ever ROM is downloaded, but I took the chance at what I thought would be an easy to follow option, read as much as possible and it seems to have paid off.
Hope this helps,
J

Your answer should be like above.
PhoenixHawk need the second part, not me.
I thought Midget's was derived from Ivan's, so I was wrong.
@J
You are right, once you get the first working, you can read on or try as many until you are happy with one.
I'll give it a try.
I don't have a spare phone, so my regular one will have to keep up with me ;-)
But first things first: Currently I have some problems getting my MDA Pro syncing with my Vista client. The mobile device center just won't recognize my pda when it's connected. And I can't start about thinking flashing the rom until that's not working... anyone a clue?

Take some advice (I didn't listen, thought I was better than everyone else and ending up bricking my phone everytime).
Do NOT use Vista. For the sake of an hour's additional work in either installing another harddrive or swapping it temporarily, do everything within an XP environment.
Trouble free.

Wings+ROM Port...how to remove the SIMDOOR Message???

Hi guys...Ive "moved" a Kaiser Rom over to Wings, boots fine, but now i stuck with a SIM DOOR Message, and i cant locate this issue.
Can anybody help me? Ive tried different ROMS and RADIOS in combination, but this annoying SIMDOOR message appears everytime....
why not use a ROM thats actually made for your phone....
there might be a reg fix but i doubt it
Because i want PRO.
I want to use PPL (a pocketPC programming language) with my phone, but only "PRO" offers some higly needed OS related Controlelements.
Sure a PRO OS on Smartphones maybe a new and "useless" trend, but some of us (SmartPhone and PPC Enthusiastics) need more "Performance".
A PRO OS works well on Standart-Phones, and its always used on many SmartPhones like Startrak and Tornado, there are Projekts on Vox and Breeze,too...
Anyway, i need help.
Ive only 10 seconds after the Phone boots, not enought time to check Registrychanges during the Todayscreen appears.
No one?Nobody here can tell me which Procedure is for this SIMDOOR?
...or anybody can give me a regdump

Recieved a New (secondhand) HTC Cruise..

Hiya's, I found this site while looking up info on the HTC cruise as I have just received a hand-me-down Cruise from a friend (had a very old nokia..). This is a major upgrade for me (it has a 2 camera's unlike my nokia which has none). I am keen to get the most use from the phone as possible and at the moment it seems to be going ok but having read a couple of the forum messages it seems that there are various upgrades that can make it a better phone.
I have been accused of being a semi-ludite when it comes to using technology so would appreciate any advice on what can be upgraded as far as the operating system and other programs are concerned. I have used the CoPilot program this morning and think is is the greatest thing since individually sliced and packaged cheese..
The settings on the phone indicate it is ROM 1.26.710.1 WWE (date 12/17/2007), Radio Version 1.58.21.23 and Protocol Version 25.65.30.04H.
If any advice is forthcoming, please keep things as simple as possible or I will have to get one of my neighbors kids to come over and explain..
Cheers
Ian
Welcome to the wonderful world of a touchscreen windows mobile device.
Of course there are a lot of things you can improve, thousands of programs are waiting to be installed and so on.
IMHO the most important thing is: If you are satisfied with your current system DO NOT change it. If everything is running smooth there is no need to flash a new operating system or radio. If you notice slowdowns during using the device or if the radio in your area is not running perfect you should flash the latest upgrade from HTC. They are offering WM 6.1 (WM = windows mobile, the operating system) and a new radio. Its very easy to flash but you will loose all your data on the device.
If you don't like your today screen, you can check some replacements, Mobile Shell is one of it:
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pocketpc-software/mobileshell
And if you like this shell you can change its look with upgrades like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3904948&postcount=2513
Of course you can flash one of the Roms created by one of the devs. You will find an overview here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=521961
But you should be aware that many of these roms are using stuff from other devices like Manilla, this might cause problems. And you have to be very careful if flash a self created rom, its not that easy like flashing an original HTC rom.
Last but not least you have to think about the way you want to use your device. If you just need a phone you need nothing else. If you want to read ebooks like wikipedia you need a reader and so on. Here you can find tons of programs for your device:
http://www.handango.com/homepage/Homepage.jsp?storeId=2218
You will also find a lot of freeware apps here:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/
And a very important thing is: Backup your device often if you are trying different applications, you are having a windows device
For a list of recommended software check my signature.
All are freeware except iGO, and easily found on this forums (or links from here lead to authors pages).
And welcome to Polaris owners club...
Thanks very much for the replies..
It seems to be going ok at the moment. I am not too sure whether it is slow or not (nothing to compare..) but opening an application only takes a couple of seconds so I am happy with that. I have been using it primarily as a phone (of course) but have been using the camera like mad. I even made one of my friends give me a video call..very cool...I have tried to use the voice commander application but it doesn't seem to want to do anything and eventually just says "Goodbye" and closes. I am going to look at the list of applications at some of the website that are list above and see what is available.
Cheers and thanks again..

I'm about to give up on Treo 750 (Downgrade wm6.1 to 6.0) [RESOLVED]

I fixed my problem doing a Hard Reset and uninstalling the Palm Translator software pt-BR. So, I'm still using 6.1 and I'm very happy with it.
Guys,
I'm in desperate mode on. It has been two days I updated my treo 750 to wm. 6.1 ( Treo750_OS5_2_19199WWE_STD). Everything went just fine. The system is nice and all. A little bit faster than the old 6.0.
But then the nightmare started: My "Notes" and "Task Manager" are there but don't work! I put Network frame 3.5... but nothing happened.
These are the two app I most use! I know there is a lot of other apps but I wanna use these ones that came with the wm.
I have two choices: downgrade to wm 6.0 or fix this issues. I've been without sleep for two days 'cause every procedure I try to downgrade fails! I tried this one ( Treo750_2_27_ROW_EN_DesktopUpdater) but it says "you already have a newer version installed". And yes, I tried changing the payloads archive.
I tried Cheetah Unlocker, SD card method but nothing happens, just the three color screen saying serial or usb. It also says:
CHEE100
IPL-0.20
CHEE100
SPL-1.40.OliNex
The info about my phone is:
Windows Mobile 6 Professional (the start screen says 6.1 Professional)
CE OS 5.2.19199 (Build 19199.1.0.0)
Software Version: TREO750-2.27-RWE
Firmware version: 1.12.0c.00
CC-CAP: GEN-ENG-010
I also tried T750URT but it does nothing but getting my firmware to 1.12.0c.00.
I took the 6.0 rom from here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335402
Are them really 6.0? I took the "Generic Rest-of-world - English"
Please guys help me. I've been searching over here and other forums and I just can't make it work. I chose this forum to subscribe and post 'cause it looks like the more expert. What am I doing wrong? I got this phone last weekend and I'm pretty new to this HTC world. My first smartphone! I live in Brazil and everything, even my 3G connection was working on the 6.0. This device came from USA 1 year ago and the last owner (my friend) just put the portuguese-br translator and used it.
I think I'm not forgetting any information. Thanks in advance. Going to try to sleep.
Peterson
I'm using the same rom and the two app. work fine.
After search in the internet I found this link for rom 6.0
http://depositfiles.com/ru/files/1336491
but first check what is wrong with the 6.1 rom ...
One more thing - there are softwares that you can download and do the same job even better...( replace "Notes" and "Task Manager")...
one more link for rom 6
http://rapidshare.com/files/173145556/Treo750_2.23_ROW_WM6.rar
My 6.1 ROM is working superbly, +some registry edits to speed it up even more! It's more likely, that something went wrong in the flashing process. Just try again the same 6.1...
Thanks!
Thank you all for your words. You won't believe what happened.
@libal
This morning I was in classroom and I had a crazy idea. I pressed the red button (to end calls) and reset at the same time and erased all the data. Guess what? Everything is working fine! But I sure remember about doing this same reset stuff after upgrading. Anyway, I didn't put the translator to PT-BR yet. I'll try now and if anything goes wrong, I'll just reset it again and leave in English. English wouldn't be a problem to me as you see. I'm thinking about my wife (she's still learning English).
I wanna thank you both 'cause I just gave it a try after reading that you were not having problems with the same phone. Thanks for your time and patience.
@otoinsa
Is this safe? I mean, editing registries to get a faster wm? Can you tell me which mods or just point the link about what you did? Thanks again.
By editing the registry you can customize a lot of stuff (for me replacing left soft key's permanent "e-mail" to SMS was a must. Now under "SMS" I have a submenu containing "e-mail" AND "messaging"), also disable a lot of useless windows mobile features, or enable (power management - longer lasting battery).
To some extent it's completely harmless, just try to avoid experimenting with it too much! There are a lot of instructions on the web, most common keywords used for search are "windows mobile registry hacks" or "pocket pc registry edits". It's best to add the version number (WM 6.1 for example) when searching. Also don't confuse your Treo 750 with Windows Mobile Smartphones - they don't have a touchscreen and those run a different type of Windows Mobile. It's almost the same, however there are some differences...
Most of the older WM regedits will work on 6.1. Also Treo has some Palm-specific registers. Just for starters, here's a link:
http://pocketnow.com/wiki/Windows_Mobile_6.1_Registry_Edits#Power
Wish you luck and hope you'll help to keep the 750 alive in this forum! Post your success afterwards.
I found it!
I found the problem. After doing all the customization and testing all the apps, I installed the translator Pt-BR from Palm's site. Guess what? All the apps I mentioned before stopped working. I did the uninstall process and guess what again? Everything was in English again and most important: working!
So this is the trick: don't use Palm Translator (at least pt-BR) if you are using a non-official wm6.1 rom.
The guy who sold me this Treo has the Treo Pro 850 now. Such a nice device, but 750 was my first pocket pc and I won't forget about that.
Gotta change the post title to resolved lol. But don't lock it yet. Maybe someone else may has a experience to share with us.
