We have 6 Treo 750w from AT&T running WM5. We've setup direct push e-mail from our Exchange Server. Everything works except for some e-mail attachments.
From time to time, someone will get an e-mail and it will show an attachment. The user will click on the attachment which adds it to the "download next sync" queue. The "send/recieve" is initiated and nothing happes - no attachment download, no warnings, no errors, nothing.
The only time I've ever been able to make it work is by removing the battery and then restarting the process. The atrtachements for that one e-mail will come down.
It sounds like a rouge or malfunctioning application, but we're only using the default apps with Windows Mobile/AT&T default ROM.
Anyone have a clue?

I seem to be missing something. I upgraded the ROM and set up my prophet for push email. In the schedule section, I set it to check for messages every 10 minutes. It appears as though the same thing can be done in the "Messaging" app by setting it to connect and check for new messages (Screen 4, "Options" button during account setup. This actually looks preferable, as you do not need an exchange server.
Am I missing something here? There was a whole lot of excitement in the forum about AKU2.
Tom Daly
Checking for messages every 10 minutes is not push email. Almost as good though.
As far as I know the AKU2 supports A2DP etc. What else does it do?
Couple of things I've noticed thus far ...
1. Take care in the settings when making a new account. Particularly the "Advanced Settings" link-looking things.
2. The new placement of buttons (delete message, send/receive) is much better.
3. Anyone else unable to download attachments? I keep getting "This attachment cannot be found. Download attachment again?" despite it quite clearly having downloaded it the first time.

I have to agree with #2 (maybe it's just a learning curve) but having the Forward buried under the reply menu makes no sense. I also don't like the delete button on the soft key, IMHO having the New command there makes more sense.
Ah ha! I figured it out. There's the option to save attachments to the storage card. Turned that option off, and it works just fine now.
SSL & Comcast.net problem fixed?
Some of you may have seen my and others' posts complaining of poor POP3
sync'ing with comcast.net email servers:
on TreoCentral
on HowardForums
Suffice it to say that comcast.net doesn't like the attempt by WM5
PocketOutlook to negotiate an SSL session. It takes PocketOutlook
roughly 60 seconds to give up and revert to not using SSL. Too long
for my comfort especially when no calls are possible (unless 3G) during
this conversation and some might want to "poll" for new email frequently.
I am hoping that either WM6's PocketOutlook has fixed this debacle - or,
in the absence of a fix, the RegEdit outlined in those posts still works.
Of course Comcast could make matters much better by actually supporting SSL - but I'm not holding my breath...

POutlook syncs with Gmail POP3 + SSL without a problem. Looks like it could be a Comcast issue.

Indeed, it is PRECISELY a Comcast issue. In fact, I believe some who use gmail have noted that SSL is REQUIRED. So, the workaround to get Comcast to work (by disabling SSL) actually prevents gmail use.
Regardless, for those that DON'T use gmail (or any other email server requiring SSL), this workaround (in WM5) is sufficient to get Comcast email working.
I'm just asking if this workaround is possible in WM6 - can anybody try it out? It's quite simple to enable & disable.
i've been unable to send emails with attachments using gmail in poutlook.
i am however able to send emails without attachments just fine.
anyone have any ideas? I posted this in another forum, but figure this would get a response.
Thanks.
I've noticed a very odd thing.
On WM5, I could connect to Yahoo IMAP, but only over AT&T. If I did bluetooth over activesync, it would not log in.
On WM6, I can connect both over AT&T as well as over bluetooth activesync. Of course if I try to connect with outlook express on my PC, I get a log in failure (intentional on Yahoo's part I believe.)
In any case, Yahoo IMAP is apparently allowing pocket outlook to connect, but not PC based outlook. It works very well, HTML email is great, attachments are agreat, and sub folders sync.
My favorite new feature, hot keys!!
Hold down on "H" to get a list of hot key commands.
Now I can delete by pressing and holding "D"
Move messages to folders with "M"
Mark read/unread = "K"
Load more of message = "L"
You get the picture. I just don't have to hit "menu" first, just press and hold the buttons. Just like the good old days on PalmOS with snappermail.
If this feature was in WM5, I feel like a total idiot.
Hi all, I'm fairly experienced with the WM world (been using since WM2002) and am usually able to fix plenty of people's problems (on here and in the real world). I have run into an issue that I haven't quite been able to figure out. If it were my phone, I'd probably reflash a different rom on it (or even same one) and try it again fresh, but since it is not my phone I haven't tried it yet. Anyways, here is the issue.
My coworker has configured his phone running his provider's stock WM6.1 standard rom. He (well me, he had no idea it was possible until I showed him) is trying to connect his phone to the company's exchange server to get email on the phone. I have configured this (or instructed how to do this) for over 25 people where I work, and the only issues that I have ever run into were certificate issues. I manually pulled down the root certificate, made a cab file containing it, and installed it on his phone. This is easily verified by accessing the company's OWA site from Pocket IE. Without the certificate installed, a certificate warning appears, and with it you access without a problem (which I can do). So certificate, checked.
Now after a soft reset, it comes time to configure it. I get the email address, password, and domain in without a problem. Then the OWA address is put into the server address. Then the specific mail and calendar items are configured (such as retain last 3 days of mail, download 50KB of each message, show last 2 weeks of calendar, etc.), and finish is hit. The device successfully syncs, with no errors appearing on the screen. I even see items come down in activesync (such as syncing 82 contacts, 5 calendar events, and some emails).
I opened pocket outlook, and his inbox is empty. Odd, so I send him a test email from my AT&T Tilt (cooked WM 6.1 rom), and it arrives to his device on the next send/receive. Then, I hit send receive again on his phone and the test email disappears. I have tried changing the "retain" option for email from last 3 days to last 2 weeks, and no difference. Also the Calendar is empty. I sent him a meeting request and he accepted it, but it isn't on his mobile phone's calendar (but it is on the exchange calendar).
The only thing that I could think of is a rule to move everything to his personal folder on his laptop, but he says that he doesn't have one and moves everything over by hand. I'm thinking about swinging by his desk and confirming, but he isn't dumb and I'm sure he isn't lying about it.
I have been searching google (here and full internet google) without much luck. Thanks for any ideas to try, or else I'm gonna go soft reset his phone
Jason
Well he did tell me when he closed outlook on his work PC, everything started working right. I might try to swing by and look at his outlook afterall.
Jason
btw, if your poutlook syncs only new mails, and your server is configured to not keep messages on the server, the message might be deleted every other send/receive.
My problem is very similar to the one described here, However I don't want to fix it, I just want to TRY and retrieve my contacts!!!!
I am looking for the contact data files in WM 6.1 (in other words, the outlook data files that are probably hidden).
Backstory: The resident idiot here (ME) neglected to sync his phone and back things up for, oh, about 3 months. (yes, you know what comes next, and I fully deserve it!).
The phone has now stopped working... Specifically, the Phone application, contacts application, and calendar application. The rest of WM is working fine, except that there is something causing it to run sluggish. AND the phone will not sync. It will connect, but it refuses to sync. Nothing was done to cause this failure, other than waking up one morning.
SOMETHING is corrupted, but I don't think its the actual data file (logic for that is below), SO before I hit the hard reset.... I thought I might try to back it up manually..... what do I have to lose?
A few more specifics:
1. Samsung i770 running WM 6.1 (but I think more of a WM specific issue than a i770 issue). Activesync 4.5 will connect, but it will not sync contacts.
2. When the phone booted for the first 20 or so times after the problem appeared, an error message would across the screen as soon as the desktop was loaded, but far too fast to make out any of the words.
3. Trying to load contacts, calendar, or the phone application produces absolutely no result. No error message, to hung process, nothing.
4. The messaging application works fine, BUT any attempt to load a contact from within fails. Again, no error message, just... nothing happens, it's like you never clicked it....
5. The radio antenna in the top bar says that it has no service.
6. NOW the error message is no longer flashing by the screen when you boot the phone, but all other symptoms remain.
7. Despite the fact that the radio icon and status indicator claims there is no signal, I can send and receive text messages (I just have to enter the number manually).
8. Once, very recently, without doing anything, an error message appeared and STAYED on the screen. Shape of the text looks about right for the message that previously has been flashing by on the screen, I think they are one in the same.
"Shortcut Target"
"error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename."
ANY THOUGHTS? Primarily I'm looking for the contacts data file (I don't care about the calendar, but its probably in the same spot) to TRY back it up before I hard reset the phone.... BUT if anyone has any ideas about a cause or temporary fix to the problems, I'm all ears!!!!!!
I'd highly recommend trying Microsoft MyPhone, just to see if that can access your contacts. It may be that the contacts DB itself is knackered, in which case you obviously can't get anything back.
Worth a try

Good luck!

Indeed it was worth a try. Connected via Wifi to install (can't use data plan, that requires "dialing" an internet connection, which must use the phone app).
Synced documents, txt messages, photos, and then said "Synchonization Successful". WOOHOO! all done.... OR NOT! checked online, NO contacts information. No Calendar information. Apparently MyPhone takes the stance of "if it won't work, just ignore it and report success".
Thanks, A very good thing to try, but no go
Unfortunately, I can think of a number of different ways that WM could be programed, each pointing to a different culprit for the problem. If it's straight DB access for each program, then the only conclusion is that the DB is knackered. But if there's a some kind of access control program that handles those things, maybe its just the program that's no good (hence the message that it couldn't load the target shortcut when the phone boots up).
Anyone have any ideas where to find the DB itself? I can always try the traditional (and very bad idea) of a file swap.....
Looks like this mystery will go unsolved... last chance to figure out where to find the contacts db file is. I'll probably be wiping it tomorrow, can't live without the phone much longer. Thanks for the suggestions so far!
Search for PIMBackup, that will enable you to save all your PIM related stuff and then restore it once you have a working device.
Edit
Forgot to say this doesn't require you to install anything, just save the EXE to your memory card and then use File Manager to run it on the PPC.
"Connecting to outlook...."
"Could not connect to Outlook."
Beautiful suggestion, I really thought I had the answer there... Thank you!
Seems to be that poutlook.exe is knackered, but that really would not explain why the Phone (cprog.exe) won't load...
PIM Backup log history is mostly what could be expected:
appointments failed - cant connect to outlook
call logs worked
contacts failed - cant connect to outlook
messages worked - "connected to outlook" (but thats a different db and a different connection app, tmail.exe)
speed dials worked
tasks failed - cant connect to outlook
So it comes down to this: PIM.vol is knackered, OR poutlook.exe is dead, and I'm not sure which. Anyone have WM 6.1 and feel like emailing me a copy of poutlook.exe? (powderkeg500 ~a~t~ gmail ^d0t^ com !)... I'm sure the versions may be a bit different... but *shrug* maybe it will work?.....
Does anyone know if I can simply copy PIM.vol to my computer, reload the device, and then copy PIM.vol back to the phone? If the answer is absolutely yes, then I can simply try that. But if the answer is no... I could be shooting myself in the foot
i think copying PIM.vol off and then back on might work, but i seem to recall it may require Total Commnader to get it back on as it's locked by the OS on startup - deemed a system level file i think.
i remember doing this once myself but can't remember that far back now.
Sorry for not sounding more positive. You might like to look at alol.net.br as they offer a free Exchange acount you access OTA and so your contacts would always be backed up in future.
I have had this issue with two different phones. All of a sudden, no indication, emails from inbox will completely vanish, ALL of them, and the inbox screen says "No Mail"
If I go to check out some other folder, Sent Items, or something else, it updates and shows me emails. Just nothing on the inbox. Reboot does nothing. All other things are there. Apps and all. I thought maybe its the SD card... changed it, still same issue is happening.
This is on an Exchange 2010 server.
Ideas anyone?

have you check the settings of both your email and the email application of how may the IMAP or iPOP is set up on both ends? that might be a problem if it's not set up well on both ends hope that helps! [:
Thanks for the reply but it doesn't apply to me. I'm using ActiveSync Push with an OWA server.
It sounds like more of a question for you Exchange Server team, but then they probably aren't use to dealing with smartphone users....
I got this same issue! At first I was able to nicely see mails in my main inbox, now it just says empty! All other folders works (sent, deleted, etc.).
OP did you find a solution?
Quite a lot of corporate Exchange servers will be setup to also host 'webmail'.. if you just open an https://... connection to the Exchange server name then it might give you a login prompt. It would pay to check whether you still have full access to emails via this method in addition to your phone.
Before blaming the phone / ROM, you should make sure that the Exchange server still has the actual emails on it. If they're gone from the Exchange server, then they would also disappear from the phone.
Did you clear caches or anything similar just prior to the disappearance? One other possibility is that some email corruption has caused the email app to just no longer be able to recover the locally stored emails. Try using an app like Titanium Backup to remove the app data for the emails and reloading things.. if this sorts out the issue it would narrow things down.
