I am looking at getting an S710 but have seen some reviews on the S730 which is rumoured to be released July 2007. Does anyone know if there are anything confirmed as of yet?
Cheers in advance.

I guess it is going to be released in July according to HTC, but then it always takes a while before it actually shows up in the stores. So my guess is that it will be available by september.
the main feature of 3G is to reduce battery life by 30%.
Its completely useless in the US and other countries as most folk won't notice the difference between EDGE and 3G (unless using the phone as a modem).
In the UK, for IM & Email you won't notice. I only browse in wifi hotspots anyhow.

Lol! so true
Had a tytn before, almost never enabled 3G other than for surfing since it drained the battery.

will the same thing(battery being less) apply to the S720 since that is 3G also but a CDMA phone? And will you be able to turn of the 3G on that phone?

but to the topic 30% less power with UMTS:
In germany there are 2 network providers (o2 and Eplus) (GSM 1800 Netzwork) that have no Edge. So you need UMTS, if you use your Smartphone
for Internet Dial in with laptop. For normal use like email Push or sometimes surfing with embedded internet on the S710 is GPRS the better way (power)
And O2 has a 5GB Flatrate for 25 Euros. and Eplus (base) unlimited for 25 Euros per month. One of the misstakes:
both have no true IP Adress, you´re behind of a switched network, perhaps that is not a problem for Email and Internet, but if you wnat to use that for remote dial in ;-)

So how come it was not charged for on either of my two Dec-jan bills ? and also no usage showing as "unbilled" for Jan-feb despite heavy usage ?
yep still no charges for data usage on O2 here too.
and they have the best looking versions of the HTC's

I heard somewhere that they're gradually phasing out the free usage on the GPRS, as there's so many accounts this makes total sense. I know Virgin had the same problem when upgrading the central server holding every user's voice and SMS mailboxes - they had to gradually phase out the old system and phase users onto the new system. I know this much because I have a friend who until the end of last month worked at the Virgin Mobile HQ in Wiltshire, so if Virgin needed to do it like that - and they're one of the smallest of the UK telcos - it's only logical that O2 would need to follow the same route.
I've never had free GPRS on my account - I signed up late September last year, and I've always (due to their cockup) only had 100kb of GPRS - I was put on the standard O2 200 instead of the Online 200, but it's always been tallied against my tarriff whenever I've used it.
This said, is there another superduper secret way of getting free GPRS which I've totally missed? I did scour this forum when I first signed up after reading about the free O2 GPRS, but the only stuff I found seemed to be followed up by "this isn't working anymore".

T-Mobile - because for just £13 per month I get 100minutes of calls and 40MB of data....you can't beat prices like that (except maybe Orange - get a PAYG sim and use the £1 unlimited GPRS all day option on days that you need it - in theory a maximum of £31 per month for unlimited GPRS)
Is the 40mb a shared quota which you can divvy up between MMS and GPRS, or is it solely GPRS traffic?
Is the free GPRS on o2 online or o2 offline?

I had free GPRS all of 2005 on my O2 Online 50 contract - no idea if it's now being charged for though as that contract ended 14th Jan.
I've been with O2 for over a year and have never been charged for GPRS.
Having said that, I don't use it that much.
I read on this forum (over a year ago) that O2 doesn't usually charge for GPRS so you can use gigabytes over months and then get a humongous (big) bill one month for all your unbilled usage so far.
I don't know if this is true.
This is the only thing that stops me from listening to internet radio all day on my PDA (except the batery life, of course).

Cheeky gets love charging me for all they can - I sent a message to a mate in Cyprus and they charged me 16-odd pence. When I said, how come that's not coming out of my free SMS units, they said "oh... It costs extra". I said "TAKE INTERNATIONAL SMSES OFF MY SMS CREDITS!" and they said "no."
So, I can't text my friend in Cyprus any more. Which sucks, because I used to text him loads. That said, the tariff-inclusive 0870 numbers means I can use one of those international relays to ring him, but there's a big lag between me speaking and him hearing it (about half a second? It makes conversations interesting).
Have you considered getting ITS to call him?
Would only be 17p a min...
http://www.o2.co.uk/personal/abroad/prices/callingfromuk/0,,132,00.html
ITS came free as a bolt-on on my account. I used it when I was in Germany last October, very handy.
However, I'm not willing - or prepared - to pay extra ON TOP of my tariff, where I'm already paying for calls and text messages. Frankly I think it's a huge con, I understand why the mobile companies do it because the international gateways have their own charges which the phone companies have to absorb somehow, but I don't think they're clear about it in the slightest. 200 free minutes and x free text messages kinda implies that wherever you send them to, they'll apply right?
first forgive me if allready posted ( have done a search but found nothing )
there been much disscusion at other forums, started 1st april, check out, http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=plans_webnwalk
its either combined with a new tarrif or available as a £7.50 to an exsisting tarrif.
suddenly my wizard becomes more useable with such a bargin price!
GREAT!!
Thanks for that man, i just called T-Mobile up and asked them about it and yes its true! for only £7.50 i can go online all day on gprs/umts for no extra charge! i've just cancelled my dumb gprs allowance i used to have (£5 for 6MB) It works on any Flext or relax price plan so anyone who is thinking of it....go for it!!
Standard charge for T-Mobile is: 1MB=£7.50........... ouch now thats bad!
don't even think of going online without the web n walk upgrade!
I've got it too, only just got my Wizard and was excited about having Wi-Fi access to the net, but this pretty much makes Wi'Fi redundant for me!
great, and even better is ,
if you get the new contract with them now, not even you got 25% off for traiff, and also the unlimited GPRS..
so, you only pay for 5.63 pounds for unlimited GPRS..
What if I bought a contract with the 25% off thena dded the GPRS? Willth ey give me it at 25% off do ya reckon?
I only bought my Vario from T-Mobile a couple of weeks ago, and now they introduce this! I want my 25% off GPRS
Hopefully other operators will start to follow suit.
I'd pay £10 a month for GPRS/3G access on O2...
just to add around the 19th april there adding a faster pro version £9.99 per month 2 gb limit, can be used on laptops, 3g etc

some one correct me if im wrong,
but 2g is up to 56kbps
then there 2.5g which a normal 2g phone can handle , thats 384kbps
and then 3g thats 2Gbps
It's quite simple...
For £7.99 (Web'n'Walk) you get unlimited data, but with a fair use policy that prohibits services such as VOIP, filesharing and streaming. It also does not permit you to use your phone as a modem for your PC/laptop. I *believe* that UMTS on this service is capped at 128Kbps.
For £9.99 (Web'n'Walk Pro) you get data limited to 2Gb/month, but with no limitations on how you use that data (i.e. you're allowed streaming, VOIP, filesharing, and permittted to connect your phone to your laptop/PC). I *believe* the speed cap is lifted, allowing full 384kbps UMTS service.
Just revising this... I now believe that regular Web'n'Walk offers speeds up to 384kbps, while Web'n'Walk PRO will potentially offer access to the UMTS-HSDPA standard which T-Mobile are planning to roll out across their network, with potential speeds up to 1.8Mbps (which fits nicely with their "upto 5x faster" statement).

wifi through AP allowed too in UK?
Hi there,
In the Netherlands TMO claims you can use Web'nWalk for their wifi AP's too. No use on my magician , but is it allowed in the UK too? & with that you'll never be far from a proper internet connection .
M
Btw I'm not exactly a fair user, always >40MB & in january I topped >420MB & never heard anything
changing tarifs
For anyone already with Tmobile but withot the webnwalk tarif - email customer services (free) via the tmobile website and they will switch it for you.
I realised I was paying too much and asked for some info. A really nice lady emailed me all the avaiable tarifs and I changed to a flext tarif webnwalk.
I have gained 20 minutes talk time and unlimitedish GPRS and cut my bill in the process.
I hope other operators do NOT copy T-Mobile..... this is just a marketing scam as far as I am concerned. Don't get me wrong, the price is amazing, but there is a BIG but:
Not only are you limited to the 2GB Usage (which is actually not all that bad), you can not use VoIP (to get free UK phone calls: www.sipdiscount.com using SJphone), you can not even use MSN Messenger, Yahoo, Gtalk, or AIM!!! (no Agile Messenger)!!! OMG
'Use of Voice over Internet Protocol and Messaging over Internet Protocol is prohibited by T-Mobile. If use of either or both of these services is detected T-Mobile may terminate all contracts with the customer and disconnect any SIM cards and/or web ‘n’ walk cards from the T-Mobile network.'
There are plans to lift the IM limitation at the end of the year. We want all ports unblocked!!!
By the way, your DSL or Cable connection is now obsolete due to T-Mobile's innovation: 20Mb Wireless!! Awesome. Can't wait

I got my Orbit 2 last week for valentines day and am loving it! The only problem I have so far is that I cannot connect to HSDPA. I am on O2 UK and in an area where I think there should be coverage (Newcastle/Gateshead area). I have it enabled on the phone yet 90% of the time I get 3G and the rest I get Edge! I got a new sim with the phone so it *should* be compatible....
Does anyone know if this is a problem with the handset? Or is this area not yet covered?
Thanks

afaik HSDPA is only available to business customers dude I personally left O2 last year due to the REDICULOUS prices they charge for data. Tmobile webnwalk has HSDPA available to everyone and the bill works out a damn site cheaper.
Check out 3 instead. I swapped from 02 and never looked back
£20 a month for
600 Texts
75 any network minutes
1 gig a month on HSDPA speeds!!!
I have just switched to O2 so leaving them is not an option! Mind you the tarrif aint bad! 600 cross network minutes, 500 texts and unlimited we browsing for £35 pm. Coupled with that, the Orbit2 only cost £49.99 which is pretty good.
mrvanx, I am on a business tarrif so that shouldnt be what is limiting me as far as I know...
Strange - I'm on Online 30 with unlimited txts & internet with my yearly discount) for £20 pm and I get HSDPA no problem...
u need to check coverage - for example - Glasgow is no tcovered at all. Shame
I Don't get HSDPA in Stockton/Middlesbrough, but I was in Luton over the weekend and saw the H symbol a few times.
I'm on the 600 minutes, 1000 texts, and unlimited web bolt-on, and insurance for £42:50. Still deciding whether to keep the handset (Orbit 2) or wait for something with better drivers.
I havn't cancelled my contract with Orange yet, where I get 800 minutes, 400 texts, unlimited data, and Care (insurance) for £52ish.
Decisions decisions.
I managed to find a coverage map for HSDPA (http://www.webmap.o2.co.uk/map.asp) and it looks like there is very little coverage for o2 at the moment. Only major cities South of Leeds have coverage...
I only got a H on my phone when I was in Bristol Temple meads. Anywhere else the post I got was a 3G sign, mostly G tho
Acroding to the HSDPA map, the middle of no where in wales (Search:NP7 0EX) and it's HSDPA, yet somewhere like plymouth is not, how odd
I believe it is just coverage, I'm on O2 and I live and work around Docklands in London and almost permanently have a H displayed.
I've noticed I often get a H too, although more commonly I get an "E"? What's this mean?

It means Edge.
With regards to the 'Middle of nowhere' getting HSDPA you never know that might be where O2 did thier trial for it?? But its more likely they did the trial on the IOM since they hold the contract for telecoms dont they??
Im quite staggered how little HSDPA coverage they have since Tmobile seem to have it nearly everywhere where there is 3G??
H in most of Brighton but on Vodafone
Before I realised the RSS thing had sucked 80mb from my data plan oops .
have to be careful now.

Nope, middle of nowhere was not the trial, only seems to have gone HSDPA in the last month or so, as it wasn't HSDPA when I was there on my phone.
I get HSDPA in Bath with O2, works a treat.
Strangely enough HSDPA appeared across the south west just after the outage on boxing day (or was it the 27th? can't remember exactly).
Alas, where I live I don't even get Edge. Which is why the Wifi is so useful. If I want to download anything big, I just do it on Wifi.
Watford
I pick it up when working in Watford so would guess it's a coverage issue..
I think its a coverage problem. I'm in london (north, east, and south east usually) and get an almost permanent H symbol.
The only problem for me is that the speed is effectively the same as 3G, in london anyway.
I've disabled HSDPA to test this and get 121-128Kbps for both 3G and HSDPA.
(try http://text.dslreports.com/mspeed or http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1 to test for yourself)
O2 customer support reckons that the number of users in London is overwhelming and this reduces the speed.
Pretty crappy if you ask me....
My friends assure me that data speeds on O2 increase significantly when you get outside london, but I've not had the chance to leave the big smoke since getting my Orbit2.
This is (probably) a stupid question.
I have the Polaris, and live in Fulham, work in the city - yet I only ever get GPRS or Edge... my phone didn't ship with a new sim card, is it possible that I need a new one for 3G or HSDPA?
A.

It SAYS voice and data and there are already TONS of Tri-Band UMTS/3G smartphones available worldwide, so I wonder why people make such a big fuss out of it.
I think it's just that there was only ATT that provided 3G in the US? But now Tmobile coming in and many have been waiting for a long time now. I think you need a quadband UTMS phone or the one with the Tmobile band which I think is 1700 and not many have that yet?

If the 1700 MHz frequency is correct, there will be at least 4(!) phones with the 3G support for this band when the service starts tomorrow.
Or to say it in a better way: FOUR phones will be available starting tomorrow.

Hi guys.
Dont know if this is the right section but this is driving me mental so I had to ask somewhere, lol.
On the morning of Wed 28 October I noticed that on my Htc HD I was only getting 3g instead of my usual HSDPA. I initially thought it may just be some sort of glitch locally, (berks area).
Later on that day I went off to Spain for a week where I had no problems getting HSDPA while roaming.
I got back last Thursday and have the same problem. The "H" will appear, but only for few seconds and then go back to 3g.
Was wondering if anyone is having the same problems with orange?
Thanks
Just to update, have now tried the sim in a htc diamond and a samsung and they both give me 3g not hsdpa, I know for a fact my old diamond use to give me "H" all the time at home so there must definitly be a problem with the signal I think.
Anyone else notice anything?
i dont think any of the networks enable true HSDPA (i.e 7.2Mbps) in the UK anyway!
i dont think i would worry about it!
the fact that my o2 ignito says 'H' but the iphone reception indicator sayss '3G' doesnt meant i get a different d/l speed than the iphone

3G and H d/l differences might be true in theory but netwok limitations by the carriers would be the greatest limiting factor
well here is a strange one, just done two speed tests. While doing them the "H" came up and gave results of 1196 and 1346. This sounds right I suppose.

Yes, it seems 3UK have changed things too.
Up until a few weeks ago my device had a constant HSDPA connection - now it's 3G when idle, only changing to H when actually pulling data across, then straight back to 3G. This has resulted in a much higher latency delay when browsing!
See my thread here for my original post on 3Gforums.
